....(born 1974) is an Australian artist, writer and film maker. He won an Academy Award for The Lost Thing, a 2011 animated film adaptation of a 2000 picture book he wrote and illustrated. Other books he has written and illustrated include The Red Tree and The Arrival.

Our Favorite Nonfiction of 2024

It's very nearly the last minute, and, just in the nick of time, we have our list of favorite nonfiction from 2024. I will admit that this area is not my strong suit, so my coworkers are doing the heavy lifting. These are for the readers who want to more deeply understand the world around us, the history behind us, and the future to come. Brave readers all.

If you're looking for a behind the scenes peek at the giants of the American writing scene, pick up one of Brad's favorites, A Chance Meeting. Brad says, "American Luminaries... they're just like us! They hang out, have coffee together and get into arguments. In Rachel Cohen's wonderful new book, we eavesdrop on artists and writers from Henry James to James Baldwin and witness the impact these men and women had on each other."

As for the editing and publishing side, Caitlin loved The Editor: How Publishing Legend Judith Jones Shaped Culture in America. "Judith Jones was the legendary editor at Knopf. She shaped the careers of Julia Child, Madhur Jaffrey, Anne Tyler and John Updike. Early in her career Jones saved The Diary of a Young Girl by Anne Frank from the slush pile. What a life!"

Speaking of Julia Child, many of us love to cook (as well as read) at Island Books, and Laurie highly recommends Seriously, So Good by Carissa Stanton. She says anyone can cook from it and the food is delicious, which is exactly how I like my cookbooks!

Laurie also found Ina Garten's memoir, Be Ready When the Luck Happens "full of humor and dishy storytelling. The Barefoot Contessa entertains as she weaves the story of her childhood meeting Jeffrey and becoming THE Ina Garten. You'll enjoy this from start to finish!"

As for Cindy, her favorite nonfiction was Doppelganger by Naomi Klein. She says, "In Doppelganger, Canadian author, activist and cultural analyst Naomi Klein tours the persistence of The Doppelganger in history and literature while reckoning with her personal doppelganger, Naomi Wolf, author of The Beauty Myth turned conspiracy theorist ("Other Naomi"), with whom she is chronically confused or interchanged with by the public, mainly online. Part memoir, part social critique, Klein touches upon on issues of self-identity, self-presentation, online identity, the rapid dissemination of bad information, news, fake news, and the simmering entry of AI into our online constructs among many other factors that over the last few decades have contributed to the accelerated political polarization and societal disparity we are experiencing today."

Back to the realm of what we can control, from the author of Four Thousand Weeks, Victor highly recommends Meditations for Mortals by Oliver Burkeman. "The perfect book for embracing and accepting your imperfections." Sounds like a good way to start out the new year!

Looking for a seafaring adventure to fill the void left by David Grann's The Wager? Brad says, look no further! "Hampton Sides brings Captain James Cook's final voyage to life in The Wide Wide Sea, while thoughtfully addressing the moral complexity of Cook's encounters with the indigenous populations of the Pacific Ocean."

If you'd like to explore a little closer to home, Nancy can't stop talking about Born of Fire and Rain. She says it's for the reader who is interested in the science and ecology of the Northwest. Plus it's beautifully written and illustrated. Come for the cover, stay for the words.

And for the micro-ecology of our own backyards, Backyard Bird Chronicles is perfect. Nancy says, "This is a great gift for anyone who likes to look out the window. Tan is showing us how to observe with no ulterior motive. Just the birds and beautiful drawings provide wonderful entertainment."

Caitlin loved There's Always This Year, saying it's "a book of fathers, sons, life, and, of course, basketball." And she picked Bluff, by Danez Smith, as a standout poetry collection from this year. She says she often read through individual poems multiple times, and calls it a "deeply thought-provoking look at civil action."

My own contribution is How to Winter, which I enjoyed so much that I wrote a whole blog about it. It's perfect for this time of year, but has tools that can help us shift our mindsets during any challenging times.

Lo que he escrito está inspirado en una canción que encuentro increíblemente bonita y tierna al mismo tiempo. No estoy seguro de cómo quedará el resultado final, pero espero de corazón que les guste.

"La vida es así, mi bien, la luz que te vio nacer se apagará para que puedan dormir en paz, para que puedan soñar, mi bien, que vuelves al sol."

Era una tarde tranquila en Rapa Nui, pero Maea no podía encontrar consuelo. La isla, que solía ser tan viva y colorida bajo la luz del sol, ahora parecía envuelta en una especie de manto gris, tan distante como el sol mismo. En sus manos temblorosas sostenía el cristal celeste, una reliquia que había sido heredada de sus ancestros. Ese cristal no era un simple objeto: en su interior resplandecían pequeños soles de diferentes colores, cada uno con un brillo único, como si fueran fragmentos del mismo cielo. Pero en un descuido, Maea lo dejó caer al suelo, y el cristal se rompió en pedazos, liberando esos soles de su prisión.

La visión de los pequeños fragmentos brillando en el suelo hizo que su corazón se retorciera. Algo dentro de ella, un peso profundo que no podía identificar, la hizo sollozar sin saber por qué. No había razón lógica, pero el dolor en su pecho era real, y cada lágrima que caía sentía como si estuviera llorando por algo que no comprendía.

No soportó más la tristeza que se acumulaba dentro de ella y, como un impulso natural, corrió a la casa de su madre. La cabaña estaba cálida y llena de ese aroma reconfortante de las hierbas que su madre siempre usaba para sanar el alma. Al entrar, vio a su madre sentada junto al fuego, sus ojos profundos como el océano, siempre tan sabios y serenos.

Maea, con el rostro mojado por las lágrimas, se acercó a su madre y se acurrucó en su regazo, buscando el consuelo que solo ella podía ofrecerle. Su madre, sin decir una palabra, la rodeó con sus brazos, sintiendo el dolor de su hija sin necesidad de preguntar. El amor de una madre siempre sabe cuando las palabras no son suficientes.

"Madre", dijo Maea entre sollozos, "¿por qué estamos tan lejos del sol? ¿Por qué todo se siente tan frío y lejano?"

Su madre la miró con una ternura que solo las madres pueden tener, y, sin prisa, acarició su cabello. Las palabras de la madre fueron suaves, pero impregnadas de sabiduría. "La vida, hija mía, es así. La luz que te vio nacer se apagará algún día, para que puedas descansar, para que puedas soñar. Cuando estemos lejos del sol, será porque necesitamos encontrar nuestro propio camino, nuestra propia paz. No tengas miedo, mi niña, porque en la oscuridad es donde el alma se fortalece y, al final, regresamos al sol."

Maea no entendía del todo, pero algo en las palabras de su madre le brindó un pequeño alivio. Sabía que su madre no hablaba solo de la luz del día, sino de algo más grande, algo que no podía ver con los ojos, pero que sentía en su corazón. Y eso era parte de la belleza del viaje.

Cuando Maea despertó, la luz del día ya comenzaba a entrar por la ventana. La isla seguía tranquila, pero en su corazón sentía que algo había cambiado. El sol que se levantaba no era solo una fuente de calor, sino un recordatorio de que todo lo que comienza tiene su final, y todo lo que termina tiene un regreso. La luz del sol no se apaga nunca, solo se transforma. Y Maea entendió que, aunque a veces sentimos que estamos lejos del sol, ese sol nunca nos abandona. Siempre está allí, esperándonos para regresarnos a su calor, a su luz.

La madre de Maea la miró en silencio, con una sonrisa nostálgica. "El sol siempre regresa, hija mía. Y cuando estés lista, volverás a él, como todos lo hacemos. Pero mientras tanto, siempre estaremos juntos en la luz."

Maea sonrió, aunque en sus ojos brillaba una tristeza suave. Sabía que la vida no siempre sería fácil, que a veces se sentiría alejada del sol, pero también sabía que su madre había sido su sol durante todo este tiempo. Y en ese amor, ella encontraría la paz, incluso cuando la oscuridad la rodeara.

La tarde continuó, y aunque el sol estaba lejos, Maea sintió en su corazón que nunca realmente lo estaba.

Another week, another book haul! These are the books we received between 9/17/24 and 9/23/24. Where did this week go? I feel like I misplaced it somehow.

On the bright side, we've got some stuff in here that I am incredibly excited for. For all of you polyamory lovers, we've been working hard to acquire and review as many books with polyam rep as possible. Out of this week's haul, Darker By Four by June CL Tan, Strange Grace by Tessa Gratton, and the SPECTR series by Jordan L. Hawk should all feature polyamorous relationships. Gabe read the first half of the SPECTR series a long time ago and is really looking forward to diving back into it. Nic also got Gabe The Twisted Ones by @tkingfisher because Gabe is feral about every single one of her books.

We got this lovely version of Dragon Falls (How to Tame a Husband) by Davis Lavender from the @rainbowcrate Cozy Fantasy box. I read it in two sittings and it was exactly the sweet gay romcom I needed as a pick me up after a hard week. Check out @ edgybutfemme on Storygraph for a full review of this funny dragon riding isekai romance. Also, the main character is demisexual & demiromantic, and I've never actually found a book with that rep before!

I'm going to start actually moving some of our written reviews for books from Storygraph (and video reviews from our TikTok, I've been a hot mess) over to Tumblr soon so stay tuned for that!
