Ups & Downs, Mostly Downs.

I sold it all. At some point way back around late April, I just felt like I never wanted to set eyes on a piece of gear again and I sold just about everything I owned. There's an empty A-frame keyboard stand, an empty Apex 3-tier keyboard stand, a mostly vacant 7U rack with a Roland 1U line mixer in it that the aux doesn't work. A KPR-77 and a DDD-5 hiding under a pile of stuff in the corner. And the HS-80 I chop shopped. Everything else, gone. I dunno what did it. Depression. Lack of motivation. Changing mindset. Laziness. Honestly, I hadn't touched anything really, at least seriously, in an "I'mma produce something" kind of way for well over a year. Just half-heartedly poked at stuff then turned it off after letting out a great big sigh. So it went.

Eight months later, after the death of my father, and a lot more heavy mental baggage type stuff, I found myself itching to make music again. The iPad an KORG Gadget wasn't cutting it. Don't get me wrong, I played a live set in Osaka two years ago using just that and it went off. I wanted something a bit more, I dunno, substantial? And with more synthesis power? So I bought an MC-707. Haven't really done much but scratch the surface and noodle around but I'm impressed with the Zen-core or whatever they're calling it. Glad to see the D-50 DNA is still there (four partial synthesis engine) and the Zenology plugin editor makes sound design a shit ton easier. So we'll see where that goes. I also had the itch for a vocoder, so....

Couldn't leave well enough alone, had to change out the LEDs before I even tried it out to see if it worked or not. That green theme Roland is going with gags me... Looks better in red. If I have half a mind I may attack the MC-707 but I dunno. The LEDs were the super tiny ones, 0603 size if I remember right. SMALL AS FUCK!

Had to use 303 eh? Heh. That's the one under the Robot pad. Literally smaller than the graphite tip on a pencil by half. DO NOT SNEEZE. But I have a tool which I may have talked about that made removing these a helluva lot easier, el-cheapo made in china hot tweezers!

Got these for around $50 or something off AliExpress, I think. Sometimes the ends don't meet up, so you have to open and close them again. Definitely not made in Japan quality, but nowhere near the price either. Ah well. Today I meant to bring liquid solder in a syringe, which makes soldering the LEDs on super easy but noooo like a dumbass I forgot, so it was back to the old slow way... put solder on the pads, tin the LEDs (NOT EASY!), heat one pad, slide the LED on (using tweezers), then hit the other side. Time consuming but it worked. Hmph.

Anyway. It hasn't been an easy year at all. I've seen better times. I've had better years. Trying to bring 2023 to an end on a brighter note. Hope you guys out there are doing well.

こんばんは！ぽてまほ ことpotatomahawkです！

今回は｢憩いの極相林｣の紹介です

約2年前の曲になりますが、思い出の深い楽曲だったので、紹介させてください。

話が長くなりそうだって？

はい、全部語ります！

私は4年前からSoundCloud(Gadgetcloud)に楽曲を投稿していたのですが、それから2年後……

〝あれ？korg gadget2で作られた曲、もっと知りたくない？〟

と思い立ち、korggadget2のキーワードでSNSを検索します。すると、たくさんの素敵な人々が、楽曲を磨いていました。

まさに憧れです。10代の好奇心や行動力は侮れませんよ！

Twitterアカウントを作って、少なくとも当時アクティブだったkorggadget2ユーザーをほぼ｢全員｣調べました。

そこで、 くらんけ様が主催する、GadgetsSonicというものを発見したのです。

｢憩いの極相林 / climax forest｣

極相林を英訳したらclimax forestだったので、英語名に起用しました。

コンクリートジャングルでは、心が毎日すり減っていくと思います。そこで、最も自然のありの姿のままとされる雄大な｢極相林｣で癒されて欲しい……！そんな気持ちを込めた1曲です。

先程の癒しから一変、荒々しい曲です。制作時間が最もかかった楽曲で、korggadget2と私のポテンシャルをどれだけ発揮できるか、挑戦した楽曲です！

当時は8月だったこともあって、蒸し暑い日々が続いていました。頭の中だけでも冷やしていきたいな、と思い立ち、制作した次第です。

直訳は｢無邪気なそよ風｣！前の楽曲で癒されたり、冷やされたりした後は、心がはねるような曲で締めたかったんです！

Learning Music Log - Day 1:

I am someone that has never played an instrument, never been part of band, never even known how to start. For the past year I’ve been fascinated with Lo-Fi music, so I figured I’d try making some myself. Again, with no experience in anything myself, I figured I’d need some tools to make electronic music. An old friend of mine from high school had some songs signed and sold through Beatport, and I remember him using FL Studio at home. Just messing around with the tools was interesting to watch, but the interface and process always intimidated me.

Another artist I follow on my art blog, Artem Solop, is also big into making his own electronic music and beats. Although I do not know him personally, I have always liked his style. The unique thing about his method, is that he utilizes his Nintendo DS and Switch as instruments. Synths, Compressors, and Drum Machines have always intrigued me, but I could never tell one thing from the other, and here was this guy using them from his Nintendo consoles to make something sounds good. Cables routed from one system to another – how does he do it?

I figured I’d plunge in headfirst – well, as “headfirst” as I could while still adhering to baby steps…I know the hobby can be expensive if left unchecked.

I bought KORG Gadget for Nintendo Switch about 2 weeks ago to start this journey – an inexpensive grab through Amazon for just 30$. I have no idea what it is, but it’s what Artem seems to use in his videos. The tool is described as such:

-Robust music composition/production tools in a compact cartridge

-Simple to use and easy to understand; anyone can create music anywhere and everywhere

-16 different synthesizer and drum machine gadgets with additional DLC gadgets available

-Gadgets have retro-inspired tactile control knobs that you can turn by rotating the Joy-Con controllers

And to be honest, it did not disappoint. It was a great way to wrap my mind around the synths, tracks, and “scenes” as they are laid out in the simple to use interface. I was determined to begin this journey in a self-taught, but organized manner. I had googled a few things before starting anything:

1. Simple music theory – I had no idea that notes/scales determine how well something sounds. A lot of you may think that that’s obvious, but again, my music knowledge started in 4th grade with a mandatory recorder recital and ended with the 5 colors on the guitar hero guitar. At the most basic level, I learned that scales could be set (C Major, A minor, etc.) and most tools used to create music (a digital audio workstation, or DAW for short) had a setting to allow “helpers” that would highlight keys in any given scale. From there on, I figured out that experimenting and playing randomly sounded better if I followed the scale guidelines.

2. How different chords on a piano/keyboard evoke different emotions depending on what scale you’re in. Major chord happy. Minor chord sad.

3. After talking to my fiancé (a former band geek that played flute!) I also learned that the concept of “chords” did not apply to the flute, so I also realized how different instruments were from one another…

Aside from those few things, I didn’t really look into anything else before attempting to ‘craft’ a song on the Switch.

Immediately, I could tell that the different synth gadgets varied and specialized in different things. The Marseille gadget had some great piano, electric piano, and orchestral instrument presets; the Helsinki gadget was great at ambient/relaxing sounds; the London drum gadget was great at…well…drum sounds and beats! Each of the city inspired gadgets brought something unique to the table. The Switch’s controls were intuitive. Copying and pasting, moving notes, playing tracks vs. just playing scenes was something that I was able to pick up in around 30 minutes without even ‘sniffing’ the user guide. By messing around I actually learned more about notes, half beats, and chord progressions all on my own.

Before I knew it, I had crafted a song that was about 3 minutes long. Deep, ambient intro, catchy simple melody, and the typical ‘lo-fi’ drums set to 79 BPM. I was impressed at how good it sounded. I knew there were things I was messing up, or could probably do better, but I was still proud of it.

Hopping on to YouTube I found a TON of tutorials covering music theory, lo-fi beat making lessons, “dos and don’ts”, best plugins for DAWs and more. Before long, I invested in an AKAI Professional MPK Mini Play USB MIDI Keyboard controller (hastily, as it seems like the Arturia Minilab might have been a better grab? Lmk), got set up with a subscription to Melodics HQ to learn the basics of playing a keyboard, and installed FL Studio on my computer. After a week of using the Korg Gadget on Switch, I found that FL Studio had a bunch of the same principals in its interface, and I found myself digging in with minimal research into how to use the tool.

By purchasing the Korg Gadgets online, I was able to continue using the same tools I was already familiar with on the Switch inside of FL Studio’s more robust interface.

I was able to recreate the song I made on the Switch in FL Studio. This was a great way to familiarize myself with the tool in an almost step-by-step tutorial I had already made for myself.

After I had gotten a grip with using FL Studio at a basic level, I decided to try mirroring some Lo-fi beat YouTube tutorial videos. To my surprise, I found myself not really liking the final product, even after following the instructor’s guidelines. I don’t think I am a fan of “oh you NEED to do this and this for it to be a good song”. I do think that a basic understanding of music theory is key before even starting, but I don’t know how I feel about new and upcoming musicians following strict rules about how something should sound when it’s literally an art form used for expression and fun.

I was happier with the first song I made just messing around on my Switch than the song I made trying to emulate a Lo-fi beat guided by a professional producer on YouTube… and it got me thinking…I think Giorgio Moroder was right in that one Daft Punk song:

*SPOILERS* Marvel Movies! Avengers!

Iron Man (2008) - It was AWESOME! The fight at the end was really cool. Including when he built his Iron Man suit.

The Incredible Hulk (2008) - My favorite Avenger. It was cool seeing the fight scenes. The first one being Hulk vs the soldiers, and the second one where Hulk fights Abomination.

Iron Man 2 (2010) - Finally saw Rhodes in a suit “War Machine” I always like seeing the fight scene. For this, I would say War Machine and Iron Man fighting with Whiplash and the drones was my favorite. Second would be when War Machine was fighting with Iron Man during the party.

Thor (2011) - The last scene was pretty cool since Thor, without powers, got his powers back and defeated The Destroyer. Actually, the first scene of the fight was cool too. Thor and his friends along with Loki fighting with the Frost Giants.

Captain America: The First Avenger (2011) - The fight was cool. When I first watched it, I forgot how the ending went. Then I realize the ending was where he was frozen for 70 years. I guess he was like Aang from the Last Airbender.

The Avengers (2012) - Finally saw this movie! This one I like the fighting scenes. First one, Captain America and Iron Man fighting with Loki. Second, Thor fighting with Iron Man and then Captain America. Third, Hulk fighting with Thor since Bruce couldn’t control it. And lastly, my favorite scene of all, Avengers fighting with the Chitauris. Not sure if they were called that. My favorite scene that made me laugh was when Hulk grabbed Loki and smashed him and called him “puny god”.

Iron Man 3 (2013) - When I first saw this, I was like, “Dang, they destroyed his house. Where he had all his gadgets and technologies in there!” The end was really good. He replaced his arc reactor with a real heart. Luckily, he still becomes Iron Man later on. I was afraid he stopped being Iron Man when he destroyed the suits. Which by the way, the fight scene at the end was cool. All of the Iron Man suits, or J.A.R.V.I.S. fighting with Killian’s people.

Thor: The Dark World (2013) - I didn’t expect Thor’s mother to die, least Thor threw the hammer at Malekith. The fight at the end was pretty awesome. I thought Loki actually died, but the ending was pretty good. Where Loki (in Oden’s disguise) transforms back to himself. 

Captain America: The Winter Soldier (2014) - Didn’t expect Bucky to still be alive and having the same situation as Captain America did. Though this time he is the villain (sort of). I liked the fight between them. The cool part was when Captain America threw his shield at him, but Bucky caught it which surprised Captain. The ending was great. I was surprised to see Falcon since I didn’t know he had a suit too. Thought he was just a person that jogs along with Captain.

Guardians of the Galaxy (2014) - I guess Peter was part human. When I first saw this, I enjoyed the scene where Peter meets Rocket and Groot along with Gamora. The fight was cool. And then later they meet Drax. In the end, I thought Groot died, but found out they had to plant him. Now he is baby Groot! This movie was great!

Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015) - I didn’t expect Romanoff to love Hulk. I mean, I saw that earlier. I also didn’t know JARVIS died either. Well, technically he didn’t since he is Vision. It was cool to see the Avengers fight again! The sad part was when Hulk left leaving Romanoff sad. I kind of wished Quicksilver didn’t die. Another fight I liked was when Hulk was fighting with Iron Man with his HulkBuster suit. I thought Wanda was about to do the mind thing on Hawkeye but he sensed her coming. 

Ant-Man (2015) - Here, Luis made me laugh because the way he was telling the stories and how everyone’s voices was his voice! Also Ant-man fighting with Yellowjacket was pretty cool. The funny part was when they zap at each other or break something, but when you look at it, it looks as if nothing happened. Since they were fighting in bug sizes. Another fight I liked was Ant-man fighting with Falcon.

Captain America: Civil War (2016) - I was surprised to see Black Panther showing up in this. Bunch of the fights in this were awesome. Like Black Panther going after Bucky. And then Avengers fighting with Bucky after getting hypnotized. And then when all of the Avengers (excluding some) fighting each other. It was sad to see War Machine crash down though. Well, Captain America saves Bucky from Iron Man. The ending was pretty good.

Doctor Strange (2016) - The fighting was pretty cool. I didn’t expect the end to be Thor meeting him. Part of the scene from Thor: Ragnarok. This was pretty cool to watch. Doctor Strange fighting with Kaecilius along with the other two with him was pretty cool. I didn’t know his last name was actually Strange.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 (2017) - Drax always laughing at a lot of things. Rocket made me laugh too. I kind of liked Groot as a baby. I felt bad for Groot when he was in the core and he was almost squished. The ending was pretty sad since Yondu dies. I didn’t expect Sylvester Stallone to be in this movie. It was cool! I also didn’t expect Peter’s (Starlord) father to be the villain. In the end, Groot is a teenager :D

Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017) - It was actually pretty funny especially Ned. The fight was great and in the end, the new suit for Peter looked way cooler!

Thor: Ragnarok (2017) - Two things: I didn’t expect this too be REALLY funny! Two, I didn’t know Thor had a sister. My favorite part was the beginning, and also when Thor sees Hulk coming in and says, “YES!” because he knows him. I like how Hulk smashes Thor like he did with Loki and Loki gets up and say, “YES!” I also liked the way Korg talked too. Their team names was pretty funny when Thor said, “Revengers!” Also, when Hulk jumped out of the space ship expecting to transform to Hulk but instead crashes on the floor with the *thump* sound. Then he turns to Hulk and fights Hela’s giant dog! The ending was awesome. I kind of wished Hela didn’t stab Thor’s eye! 

Black Panther (2018) - Finally watched this film after hearing everyone saying “IT WAS AWESOME” or “WAKANDA FOREVER”. Boseman and Jordan both did awesome in their part. The fight was the best one of all! 

Avengers: Infinity War (2018) - Finally watched this film as well. I was sad at the end seeing some of the Avengers, or Marvel characters, disappear in ashes. Another sad part was seeing some dead like Loki, Gamora, Vision, and more. I didn’t expect Hulk to be beaten by Thanos, but it makes sense. I was wonder who Nick Fury tried to call, but the logo of it made me realize who it was. Can’t wait to see the other Marvel movies! Especially Avenger 4! I hope they all come back, which should happen since there will be sequels of some Marvel movies coming out.

Free upgrade for iOS. I’m hoping that the ms20 gadget is unlocked if you have the standalone...let’s hope too that midi out is true and also some other workflow improvements because without AU support I struggle with keeping interest in it. Good that Windows is coming though.

Man, MS-20 and Polysix coming to Gadget is gonna keep me up all night in anticipation, rofl. I may consider downloading it back to my iPad again.

That said, I'm thankful the upgrade will be free. Time to clear some space on my credit card for the IAPs.

Which is ridiculously cheap, considering the quality For me far away biggest issue with gadget is that sequencer, forced myself to finish whole track in it but it was terribly painful process .. Although after NS2 will get audiobus input, i'm ready to sample shit out of Gadget's synths )

I hope that the iMs20 and polysix apps automatically unlock the new gadgets in the same way imonopoly does. And hopefully work on iPhone as well as iPad.

Gadgetising ielectribe would be good too.

Having said that auv3 versions of the stand alone apps would be much better. I’d buy more Korg apps if they were auv3 rather than gadgets. I don’t want to buy any Korg gadget that can’t be used outside of Gadget.

But if we are already on v3.7.x why not Korg Gadget 4? Is the desktop version 1?

Maybe Once you’ve unlocked on iPad, Gadget should recognise them as purchased and you should then be able to do a “Restore Purchases” thing on the iPhone.

Gadget 2, V1.0 Yeah, the Desktop version is 1.x so that could explain it and at the same time sync the version numbers.

I do wonder when it will actually ship? I'll be without proper internet connection for about 3 weeks starting January 28th...
