The iPhone X is the latest Apple flagship smartphone. With the iPhone X Apple has entered the realm of near bezel-less smartphones. The screen-to-body ratio on the iPhone X is one of the most impressive on the market. The camera on the iPhone X is also market leading and competitive with the Google Pixel 2 XL. Many users will be happy living with the iPhone X but I think the purchase is tough to justify. Given the emergence of truly high quality smartphone options retailing for half the price. Devices like the OnePlus 5T, Essential Phone, Razer Phone and even the heavily discounted Samsung Galaxy S8 offer better value for money. The iPhone X is not twice as good as any of those devices. Of course, this is my opinion… There is no perfect smartphone, just the best smartphone for you. The iPhone X will be great for some but I think most would be better served pocketing the extra $500 and grabbing something like the OnePlus 5T.

iPhone X : The future of smartphones?📱

Well, I won’t get those 2hrs back. That’s the two hours I spent watching Apple formally release what was already known. Actually, it was more like 90 mins, I nodded off during the Apple TV4K and iPhone 8 presentation. I’m old, I tend to nod off a lot. I think getting Paul O’Grady to do the presentation was a neat coup, though.

TLDR; Lots of amazing new stuff that sounds great but not a lot of use for me. It’s incrementally more useful in some areas (smaller device, bigger screen, nicer camera) but has negatives (facial unlock, no headphone port, costs a bag of sand). I suspect I am not alone.

Disclaimer: I am an Apple fanboy; I have a MacBook Pro, iPhone 6 Plus, a number of iPads, Apple TV, 5K iMac … the list goes on. I’ve spent tens of thousands of pounds with Apple since 2009, although not so much in the last 2 years.

My iPhone 6 Plus already runs the new iOS 11 and it’s ok for a 3 year old phone. Does what I need and most of what I want. So what do I get by spunking over £1,000 on the new iPhone X?

* A smaller phone: that would be nice, but all my various cases and car kit stuff will need to be bought again when it’s released. Still, that’s nice to have. * A larger physical screen: that’s nice too, but I do wonder how long it will be before all my apps usefully use the extra screen space. And if I have an issue with size now I’ll use my iPad mini, iPad Pro 9.7, iPad Pro 12.9 or even my 5k iMac, etc… * OLED HDR screen : hey, I’m a big fan of OLED, I have a 65” 4k OLED motherfucker in my lounge. It’s great for watching immersive films and Netflix 4k. But do I need it on my phone? Nope, maybe on a big iPad, though. * Wireless charging : my car key wirelessly charges so I have some experience of wireless. But it’s not a biggie, and on the move why would you want to carry an ashtray-sized pad when the tiny Lightning connector that I need to charge everything I have already happens to work just fine. * Nice camera stuff : that’s nice, too. But only a marginal improvement on what I have now. If I want good photos I’ll use my tiny Sony RX100, which is a million times better than iPhone X and it’s weird modes. Or I’ll dig out my proper Olympus OMD camera. * 4.3 billion transistors, an ISP and 6 cores: WTF, really? If someone can tell me why I need them please do so. Otherwise I couldn’t give a Stuff, frankly. * Waterproof : another big nice to have. Although, in 8 years of iphone ownership (3G, 4, 5, and 6 Plus) I’ve not had a water-related issue - or any issue really. * Facial recognition : double no really, I think Touch ID works better more often and doesn’t force you into doing a selfie to open the phone. * No headphone socket: I can’t see the benefit of getting rid of it, and it’s absence would reduce my audio/charging options. It’s the primary reason I stopped upgrading at my 2014 6 Plus * Animated emojis: Just no * Augmented Reality: This is a big one for me, but is it wise to buy into the first platform, at full price? I suspect if AR does find its killer app then it will be cross platform, and not just an Apple thing.

* One Thousand Pounds: it’s not a bad price really, if it lasts 18 months then it’s costs less than a quid a day. In fact, that’s a bargain. However, my 3 year old iPhone 6 Plus has cost me only 25p a day, even if it was worthlessly broken tomorrow. Is the huge uplift good value?

And one more thing … If I lost my phone now would I buy one? Hell maybe, but only because it’s the latest and greatest and looks hyper cool. Maybe I’ll wait another year, or until some AR killer app appears. Or I could chuck my phone down the stairs.

Time for my Horlicks, I suspect.
