Ive noticed an evolution from THH characters' designs to V3 to newer Kodaka games'
THH's cast looks warm and toned down and soft while the school setting is flashy and creepy
SDR2's cast is colorful, has thick lines and has a more cartoonish feel
V3 has eye catching designs but the cold light coloring and angular features make the vibe more unsettling and depressing (ive seen various fangames replicate this style)
Tribe Nine, Rain Code and Hundred Line definitely follow V3's artstyle prolly for Komatsuzaki's evolution through the years. His older artworks although already iconic and recognizable: dynamic lines, strong character presence, weird anatomy, clothes that look they havent been ironed since the 1800s and semirealistic coloring (Im not a digital artist but basically he sketches in b&w first), they looked like they had a constant sepiatone filter, maybe its the scans' quality. Nowadays he uses a clear blueish tint which makes the characters look like theyre in a constant sci fi setting and it shows in the upcoming game as well.
Not to mention Kodaka's characters are starting to get more and more twinkish through the years but i'm not complaining.

top 10 favorite danganronpa dev stories
in no particular order:
Hiro's hair is So Big that his sprites needed to be processed differently than everyone else's
Komatsuzaki: "By the way, his family name is Kuzuryuu because I got robbed on Kuzuryuu Park 3 times during my middle school days."
Kodaka getting in trouble for the Jibakuma reference in v3
the devs got tired of Leon (and Sayaka) quickly because they designed them first, so they also took them out first
Mikan was meant to be a zombie. like an actual zombie. and also her design was changed two weeks before release
Komatsuzaki regrets designing Mondo the way he did and found his hair so annoying to draw i can feel it in my soul across time and translation
Byakuya is the staff's "butt monkey"
Kodaka loving Rantaro's seiyuu so much that he regretted killing Rantaro off so early
the Miu dildo sprite that they could not use for ethical reasons
the cost of getting voice actors back for Tsumugi's cosplaying was high and Kodaka regrets not being able to include UDG (as do i)

TooKyo Games' "Limit x Despair" is finally unveiled as "The Hundred Line -Last Defense Academy-"
Once again, TooKyo Games came out swinging during a Nintendo Direct.
youtube
The moment this trailer starts up, you can immediately recognize Rui Komatsuzaki's character designs.
Tumblr media
Then the setup is described: 16 students are locked inside an academy alongside a weird living mascot character, fighting for their lives as their friends are forced to die right in front of them. Sounds familiar.
Tumblr media
Yup: Hard as it is to believe, it is already time for Kazutaka Kodaka's next game. The game once known as "Limit x Despair" or "Extreme x Despair" is here, and it's... a tactical RPG!
Tumblr media
...I can legitimately say that I did not expect that. But I am also definitely down for it!
The story seems to deal with the world (or at least the characters' hometown?) being invaded and attacked by some monsters that look like the "Spirit World" baddies from Magical Girl Spec-Ops. Our protagonist Takumi Sumino is forced to hole up and lock down in a school alongside 15 other students and... this thing.
Tumblr media
....and from there, they must fight to defend the school in the aforementioned battles.
Aside from the tactical top-down combat and visual novel sequences, you'll also explore the titular "Last Defense Academy" from a perspective similar to how your traversed the island in Danganronpa 2.
Tumblr media
Given that we're apparently dealing with a cast of characters that will be whittled down and lost as the narrative progresses, I think this is going to be tonally much closer to Danganronpa's storytelling style than Master Detective Archives: Rain Code was. What I mean is: Master Detective Archives (MDA) was basically the gameplay successor to Danganronpa, but The Hundred Line (THL?) looks more like it's the narrative successor to Danganronpa, if that makes any sense?
Suffice to say that I am once again extremely hyped/excited.

Analysis of Yuma's Design ①
Tumblr media
I don't know if this has already been discussed, but I think Yuma's hairstyle is similar to the earliest design ideas for Hajime (the protagonist of SDR2) and Shuichi (the protagonist of NDRV3).
Hajime had a bob cut in the earliest design. According to Rui Komatsuzaki's comment in the official art book (ダンガンロンパ1・2 Reload 超高校級の設定資料集 -再装填-), he suggested this because he wanted to create a bobbed protagonist. He also commented in the book, "I hope to realise a character design that is cool even with a bob cut (おかっぱでかっこいい、というキャラクターデザインは、いつか実現したいと思っています)", so I think that Yuma's bob hairstyle is based on Komatsuzaki's hope.
Shuichi's ahoge was thick and curly in the earliest design. This is very similar to Yuma's ahoge design. It seems that it was decided from the beginning that Shuichi would wear a hat when he first appeared, and several hat design ideas were included, one of which is very similar to Yuma's hat. (That's what I drew in my illustration.)
In fact, Komatsuzaki often diverts design ideas he had for different characters. For example, the hood design of Chiaki's cardigan (the character from SDR2) was diverted from the hood originally designed as Nagito's coat (personally, I don't think they're that similar, but Komatsuzaki himself said so in the art book). So I think these are not coincidences, but the result of him hoping to realise the ideas he could not realise in the past.
What I'm trying to say is that even though Danganronpa and RAIN CODE are completely different worlds, what the developers had in mind when making the Danganronpa series seems to be reflected in RAIN CODE, and the characters seem to be somewhat related in that way :)

These illustrations are exclusive pre-order bonuses for different Japanese vendors. Higher quality originals may never be made available to the public, but who knows.
Yomi and Martina's illustration is by far the highest quality out of the three.
(Some higher quality versions might be available, since Famitsu shared at least one of those, with their watermark.)

hey where did this come from 🤨
I FINALLY FINISHED IT. phew. here’s an mock-up info page for haru allegro, my rain code OC!
might get into talking about her dynamics with the rest of the NDA and such later, but for now have this
official description under cut in case it’s hard to read:
Haru Allegro
Japanese VA: Sora Amamiya English VA: Allanah Fitzgerald
One of the Master Detectives dispatched to Kanai Ward. Her Forte is Soundproofing.
Despite being certified as a Master Detective by the World Detective Organization, she is more often recognized for her work as a contract advisor or an arbitrator. She is a versatile thinker and uses any information she gathers to her advantage, but at times she may be a bit dense and hold certain preconceptions that cloud her judgement.
Forensic Forte: Soundproofing The ability to block sound in a wide variety of spaces, as long as it is within a short distance from her.
————
also here’s a transparent version of her splash ⬇️
Tumblr media
i also wrote my voice claims for her! for her japanese voice i was mostly imagining sora amamiya’s role as akame in akame ga kiru (though a bit stronger with her diction). for english, literally i just listened to fitzyVA / allanah fitzgerald’s voice demo and i knew her medium/lower voice was perfect

New key visual to go with the new teaser trailer for the Tribe Nine mobage.
Here we've got new looks for Enoki, Santaro and Saori as well as Kazuki, which makes me wonder if all the characters who appeared in the anime will be getting new looks...

Tribe Nine, anyone?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The anime for "Tribe Nine" came and went last year. The game is finally entering a closed beta this month, and an English release is confirmed for iOS, Android, and Steam.
And I admit that I haven't really been feeling all that interested since the initial reveals. I watched one episode of the anime, but I wasn't feeling it. I meant to keep going or go back to it, but as of this point? I haven't.
I'll still try the game, but at the end of the day, no matter how "extreme" or gang-war-based it is, it's still centered around baseball. And baseball doesn't exactly fill me with hype, I'm sorry to say. :P
However, this is still a Tookyo Games' joint, so obviously there are Danganronpa/Zero Escape alumni involved. That mean I'm still kind of interested—particularly in the game side of the project. I do love me some action RPGs, after all, which is the genre they're putting this title into. Kodaka is listed as being on the staff behind the game in some vague capacity, and Rui Komatsuzaki's character designs are recognizably on display.
youtube
But what about you all?
Did anyone out there watch the anime? And if so—what'd you think?
Are you at all excited about this game?
I just want to hear how people are feeling about this whole venture.

guys... i finally got around to learning how to make digital art to make my ocs... but it came at the cost of getting sucked back into my danganronpa phase from four years ago...
(but, as a bonus, my akudama drive obsession is as strong as ever!!)

While I was doing some errands, I listened to this video series (in which Kodaka talks with Shinichiro Obata, who was a former CAPCOM employee and is now the CEO of a game development company):
youtube
And I learned for the first time that Komatsuzaki had left Spike Chunsoft before Kodaka left the company and was trying to get a job at a toy company, and Kodaka suggested that he work with him to stop Komatsuzaki from leaving the game industry, and that's how he founded Tookyo Games. (Although other reasons were also mentioned in the video. You can hear the talk about the reason why he founded Tookyo Games in the video above from 7:58 and he mentioned Komatsuzaki from 8:53).
I was wondering why there were no comments from Komatsuzaki in the DRV3 art book, but it may be because he was no longer an employee of Spike Chunsoft during the development of DRV3...
