Kamado Family Name Analysis

竈門: Kamado A rare but existing surname, the hearth (竈, kamado) is also an important gateway (門) through which disease can enter a home and make a family sick, so it therefore needed special attention in order to keep the family healthy. Likewise, it required care so as not to cause fire damage. However, it was likewise the source of sustenance for a house’s inhabitants, so the state of a hearth also reflects the state of the family. To say things are lively around a hearth is to say that a family is doing well, to say that the hearth is broken is to say that they’ve lost their fortune, and so on. You could also think of the fire itself sometimes being a cause for danger, something susceptible to evil influence, like how it might burn humans, so it took having a god of the health to protect against that too. These are reasons why the god of the hearth has been worshiped since ancient times, not only for protection from the dangers of fire, but also for prosperity.

As for the the personal names throughout the generations, follow me below...

Sengoku Period (often considered 1467–1568, though other dates are in use):

炭吉: Sumiyoshi Although you don’t typically see charcoal (炭, as sumi or tan) in a name, 吉 isn’t all that uncommon, whether as yoshi or kichi. It means “luck.” It’s worth stating right away that although making charcoal means working with fire for a few days at a time, it also means the longer-term work of forest management. A charcoal worker is nothing without plants. Notice the 山 (mountain, yama) that is also with 火 (fire, often hi or ka) in the 炭.

すやこ: Suyako Presented only in phonetic hiragana, we don’t have kanji to read into, but this is a pretty clever name. Because how -ko makes it sound like a typical girl’s name, similar to her descendants Nezuko and Hanako, the su also makes it feel similar to the rest of her family. Suya doesn’t really mean anything on its own, but suyasuya is an onomatopoeia for “sleeping soundly.”

すみれ: Sumire Another clever one presented only in phonetic hiragana. Sumi makes it sound like she inherited the charcoal family name, but sumire means “violet,” so this is a precursor to later Kamado family naming trends. (However, the flowers she gave Yoriichi were not violets, but Catharanthus roseus—as a fun tidbit, these are called nichinichisou, that is, “sun-sun-grass” (日々草).)

Meiji Period (1868–1912) & Taisho Period (1912–1926):

炭十郎: Tanjuurou (Whatever)+郎(rou) is pretty common in men’s names, since it’s basically like adding “son” to the end of boy’s name. Using numbers in men’s names (like the number 10 here, 十) used to be relatively common too.

葵枝: Kie Although 葵 (aoi or ki) is commonly translated as “hollyhock” (due to being conflated with tachiaoi), it is more accurately translated as “wild ginger,” but this is annoying because even though it has a similar scent, it is not actually related to ginger. Let’s just call this low-growing herb aoi, since it has a lot of religious connotations with ancient shrines and festivals—but this is also annoying, because there is a character named Aoi and her name is written phonetically and might be in reference to the color. So let’s use the Latin name for this genus, Asarum. 枝 (e) is “branch,” so Kie’s name is literally “a branch of Asarum.” But, if we want to go a step further, in older ways of transcribing Japanese, 葵 used to be written phonetically as a-fu-hi with a-fu meaning “to encounter (later on transcribed as au)” and hi being a word representing a god’s power, so it’s said that the a-fu-hi/aoi plant symbolizes coming upon incredible power. How ironic that Kie married into a family known for Hinokami Kagura.

炭治郎: Tanjirou We’ve covered 炭 and 郎, so why the 治? This is a pretty common way of adding the ji sound to a guy’s name (like Hakuji), but why this one instead of, say 次 or 二? This may be because Gotouge wanted to give his name both fire (火) and water (水)! You can see the fire in the charcoal kanji, but the three dots at the left side of 治 are the water radical, which often means the kanji might have some association with water. Although 治 literally means things more like “quell” or “reign” or even “heal,” it can also mean being in control of something like a river.

禰豆子: Nezuko First off, most OS systems do not express this first kanji correctly. The left radical would look more like ネ, with 爾 on the right. Alas, 禰 (ne) is a bit of a rare kanji in the first place, meaning “ancestral shrine.” This is kind of heartwarming what with how connected Nezuko is with her family, and how the checkerboard pattern the Kamado family uses also denotes a continuity of family. As for the 豆 (zu or dzu or mame), this is “bean.” Beans are deeply tied with warding off demons. This is especially seen in the Setsubun custom of throwing beans at demons to cast them off. But, more recently I stumbled upon the knowledge that the kurobe tree (Japanese arborvitae/Thuja standishii), a coniferous evergreen with flattened branchlets, is also called nezuko (in phonetic katakana, ネズコ).

竹雄: Takeo “Bamboo man,” with 雄 (o or yuu or other readings) being a pretty common thing to stick to the end of a man’s name. It’s a kanji with a sort of heroic ring to it if you're adding the masculine -o ending anyway). Fast-growing bamboo (竹, take) can be a problem if, say, you primarily focus on making charcoal out of oak, but bamboo charcoal has a lot of uses for keeping spaces around the home free from humidity and bugs. What’s more, bamboo itself is a bit of a heroic plant—it grows straight, stays strong through the winter, and can stand a lot of pressure and still flexibly bounce back. I've also heard of it being associated with happiness because there is a bamboo radical at the top of the kanji for "smile/laugh" (笑).

花子: Hanako “Flower Child.” The plants are a bit obvious in this one.

茂: Shigeru Another common manly name, “to flourish.” Like plants would flourish.

六太: Rokuta I have tried really, really hard to look for hidden meaning this one. He’s just “six” (六, roku) with another common way of ending a boy’s name, 太 (ta or tai, for grand, broad, magnificent, or fat). Tanjuurou and Kie weren’t feeling very creative by the time they got to this one. Couldn’t you guys at least have given him a plant reference? That would have really helped my meta out, thanks. But maybe not all is lost on this name! After all, remember how we might conflate 火 (fire/hi) with 日 (sun/hi) in Hinokami Kagura? Arguably, the sun is just as important for charcoal workers who manage the forest! 日 is not the only way of writing "sun." There is also 太陽 (taiyou)!

Heisei Period (1989–2019) & Reiwa Period (2019–current):

カナタ: Kanata KAMADO FAMILY, EXPLAIN. First off, nobody else born into the family has a name in katakana, and by the era Kanata is born, this would be pretty unusual for a boy. I can only assume this choice was made in order to make an obvious connection to his great-great-grandmother’s name, カナヲ (Kanao). That being said, did they simply forget to give their eldest son the traditional charcoal name? Or did they notice a plethora of girls throughout this series named “Sumi” and decided to avoid it? In that case, too bad they forgot all about the existence of Ubuyashiki Kanata! (Her name was written in phonetic hiragana, かなた.)

炭彦: Sumihiko Oh good, the Kamado family got their act together and remembered the kanji they were supposed to pass on. As for that -hiko, I’ve heard some Japanese fans try to read into how it was also used in one of Muzan’s fake names, 月彦 (Tsukihiko, as he went by in Asakusa when married to a woman named Rei), but 彦 (hiko) is also so common at the end of men’s names that I don’t see any merit in digging for connections. What we can dig into, though, is 和語 (wago), that is, native Japanese words that existed before the influence of Chinese and the writing system that went with it. Hiko meant “a boy endowed with a divine spirit” (the equivalent for a girl was hime, which you might recognize later became a word for “princess.”) And why stop there? This still brings us back to hi, the divine power that is sometimes just a divine power, sometimes is fire, and often is the sun.

Speaking of the sun, here’s a couple honorary Kamado descendants, because they have really good homage built into their names:

燈子: Touko Remember that 火 (hi) character for fire which you can also find in charcoal 炭? It’s fitting that fiery Nezuko’s great-granddaughter has it built into her name! The 燈 (lantern/tou) has all sorts of hopeful, positive connotations about keeping a light going in the darkness.

善照: Yoshiteru Another clever one! Yoshi is another reading of the zen kanji (善, virtue) used in Zenitsu's name, and 照 (usually read teru in names )also means to “to illuminate.” It’s got a hi too! This time it’s the 日 for sun! Oh! And those four dots at the bottom of 照? Kind of looks like a fire at the bottom of a hearth, doesn’t it? That’s because this is also another radical for 火/fire, it’s just been broken into four different strokes!! He’s got fire and sun!! So much hi! But let’s not forget, hi can also just be a general way of referring to divine power, right? That is essentially what lightning was always thought of—a very, very powerful divine power. And certainly one that illuminates things, doesn’t it? There’s no lightning directly pounded into this name, but the associations are easy to make.

Okay, now really just throwing one more in for fun:

青葉: Aoba This is truly just “green leaves.” Or is it? Actually, the history of different color names across different languages and periods of time is very interesting, and it’s lead to �� having multiple meanings. Blue and green didn’t always use to be separate ideas, so this kanji used to stand for both of them until 緑 (in Japanese, midori) came along. Nowadays in mainland Mandarin Chinese, you tend to use 绿 (lǜ) for green and 蓝 (lán) for blue, with 青 (qīng) reserved more for a blue/green shade or more generally with youth. In Japan, 緑 (midori) is used for both the color green and for the greenery of plants in general, and 青 (ao) is used for various shades of blue… typically. Sometimes it is still used for “green,” which is why traffic lights are “red, yellow, BLUE,” and sometimes, well, leaves are also called blue. Anyway, because the name is likely in homage to his great-grandmother and because he’s got the kanji to go with his, this is part of why I interpret Aoi’s phonetic katakana name (アオイ) as being in reference to the color (which is also used a lot in her character design) as opposed to the aforementioned plant. (More on Aoi, Kanao, Kanae, and Shinobu's names here.)

I have noticed that ppl ignore Nezuko's trauma and say it wasn't sad at all. Like, she saw her own family getting killed in front of her. And before that, her dad died, and as the older sister, she needed to take care of her siblings when Kie and Tanjiro were busy. She was 12. Like, you aren't supposed to act like a second mother at 12. She tried to protect Rokuta from Muzan, but failed and she felt her own brother die in her arms. She was badly injured, but not enough to die and she was suffering mentally and physically. She has a memory loss to deal with her trauma, and can't even play or just be herself like a teen of her age. No, she's supposed to risk her life, hide from the sun, and see her own family getting killed.

Like, can't y'all notice how traumatic it is ?? She was a kid. A kid feeling another kid dying in her arms.

Why Tanjiro and Nezuko >> Sun?

taking a page out of @demonslayerunhinged's book with an unhinged theory but this may actually be complete bs since I did very little background research :D

I was wondering a lot about how both Nezuko and Tanjiro were able to beat the sun easily in demon form (Tanjiro much quicker than Nezuko obviously but the point still stands), and I've seen the theories about Tanjiro just having really great stamina and stuff about his connection to sun breathing. However, I have a random idea.

I have no idea if Kie Kamado really did know the location of the blue spider lily, but if she did, what if she, HEAR ME OUT, fed them to Tanjiro and Nezuko? Since the blue spider lily is supposed to help demons survive in the sun, what if Tanjiro and Nezuko ingested a large enough amount that when they turned into demons, it came to their aid?

So, with a lil bit of background research, the official wiki says that Kie only showed the spider lilies to Tanjiro which obviously means Nezuko didn't have access to flowers. And since red spider lilies in real life are extremely poisonous, I'm imagining something similar to Shinobu injecting herself with wisteria poison happening to Tanjiro and Nezuko.

Now, if we throw all logic out the window, all I can picture is Kie making blue spider lily smoothies and making Tanjiro and Nezuko drink them because that would be hilarious. As for the reason? Since Tanjiro didn't know about demons with his family, Kie probably thought it was something nutritional. Or maybe Kie secretly knew about demons and did this as a precautionary measure (which wouldn't make sense since this helps demons). Who knows?

Or maybe Tanjiro and Nezuko are just built different. ✨💅

ok.. I have a theory

spoilers ahead‼️

So we all know how Nezuko and Tanjiro are immune to sunlight right? But why is that.. why havnt any of the demons before been able to do this..? Have they just been too scared to test it? Well I dunno if this has already been put out there before by someone else, but this is my theory.

So later on in the manga its revealed that Kie (the Kamado's mother) knew the location of the blue spider lilies. The blue spider lilies were the sole thing Muzan was looking for throughout his entire life as a demon. This was because they held the ability to let the demons walk in the sunlight. So Kie Kamada knew the location to these flowers, which ended up leading to her death by Muzan. My theory is that what if when Tanjiro and Nezuko were little, Kie would harvest the flowers and use them in recipes to eat? This would explain why they are able to withstand the sunlight since they have the blue spider lilies inside their blood now. When the Kamado house was attacked it was later revealed that Muzan's reasoning for this was not actually to just find food and have a quick kill, but rather to find the location of the blue spider lilies from Kie and turn the rest of the family into demons. Most of them died from being injected with too much of Muzan's blood, however Nezuko managed to survive. Muzan didn't realize she was alive until he found out she was living in the sun, so he never took any interest in the Kamado's until finding Tanjiro. Back to the spider lilies, in Nezuko's memory of her lullaby with her mother they were shown walking a path most likely on the mountain they live on. In her lullaby she talked about having strange features from eating different berries and plants. What if this was also a hint at the fact that they were walking to the place where the spider lilies grew in order to harvest and eat them? This theory may be a stretch, but if you think about it its not too far off. In the sunlight countdown arc when Muzan is near defeat, he says to Tanjiro -

Maybe Muzan didn't explicitly mention the spider lilies, but its still probable that he realized the connection between them and the Kamado's. Its very possible that they could have been consuming the blue spider lilies for a long time, even though a few generations.

This theory may be a bit of a stretch in assumptions, but Im sticking with it. Kie knew the location of the blue spider lilies, and both Nezuko and Tanjiro were able to withstand the sunlight. They lived high in the mountains in a secluded area, and they were often shown walking down paths when they were younger. Think about this theory when you read the manga again, it may seem strange but theres a lot of connections to it.

after reading the manga 5x and watching the anime at least 3x.. your brain starts to wonder and think of strange theories like these. What do you guys think? Is it really that far off..?

You had been living with Tanjiro Kamado and his family for a good month already and life was surprisingly good in there. While it did take a moment, you started to slowly heal and finally trust again thanks to the young boy and his lovely nurturing family.

As long as you stayed with them, you had a roof over your head and all the bread you could eat. The least you could do was to help around the bakery.

In the beginning, you were an absolute nightmare in the kitchen and… You still were, but at least you could handle the register very well and knew what kind of bread to recommend to customers since you ate the said delicious treats daily.

You were just done serving a customer with Tanjiro, who smiled at you, "I'm going to check how the cake is doing! Can you watch the register while I'm in the kitchen?"

"Of course, leave it to mighty me!" You nodded proudly and the young man smiled happily, "Thank you!" and just like that, he was gone.

You hummed as you watched after him, but that was when the bell by the door chimed, letting you know that you had a new customer.

"Welcome!" You chirped happily like a little bird as you turned to address the new customer, no, customers!

"Ah, there's someone new here?"

You blinked as you watched these two identical boys, brothers most likely step into the bakery. The only way you could tell them apart was that one was wearing a blue shirt and the other one was wearing a black one.

You smiled and were about to greet them when the one in a black shirt snorted, "Cosplaying in broad daylight? How bold."

You blinked as you registered his words and that smile of yours turned forced. You had been spending enough time on Earth to know what cosplaying was and while it might have been a compliment, these boys made it sound almost like an insult!

"Excuse-!" You were saying when the boys looked past you and smiled, "Tanjiro!"

"Muichiro and Yuichiro!" Tanjiro appeared from the backroom and smiled happily as he made his way to the twins. You watched the young men talk and share smiles with each other and you realized that they must have been Tanjiro's good friends.

"Oh, Muichiro and Yuichiro, this is my new friend and our part-time worker!" The young man smiled as he introduced you to the twins, "She actually comes from another planet!"

"Is that what she has been telling you?" Muichiro asked and Yuichiro smiled, "Is that what she believes in?"

"You little pieces-!" Your smile tightened and you bit your lip so you wouldn't lose your cool. Tanjiro laughed, "No no, she actually does! Look, her wings are the real deal and she can actually fly! I've seen it myself!"

"Yes, I'm the offspring of a mighty race from outer space!" You nodded, chin high up in pride, "There isn't another one like me on this miserable little planet!"

"We believe you." The twins nodded with those damn grins and you felt like you were being made fun of again!

"Your birthday cake should be done any time soon! I'm going to go and see!" Tanjiro smiled as he stepped around the counter and went to the backroom where the kitchen was.

As soon as he was gone, you and the twins were left alone and you turned to look at them, "So it's your birthday, huh?"

"Yes," They both nodded and shot right back at you, "So you can connect spots like that? Pretty impressive."

"Congratulations…! Though…" You smirked, "I didn't know seaweed could grow on knuckleheads also."

"I see nasty bitches come in every size and shape." Yuichiro shot back at you and Muichiro backed up his big brother, "But we knew that already."

"Cheeky little smartasses, huh?" You could almost feel a vein popping on your temple…!

Suddenly the door chimed and a woman stepped into the bakery.

"Ah, welc-!" You turned to greet the woman, but she cut you off, "Yeah yeah, where is the owner!?"

You blinked. Miss Kamado was currently baking the birthday cake in the kitchen, but you got a bad feeling from this woman so you just smiled politely, "Miss Kamado isn't available right now, but I'm here. What is it that you desire?"

"I want to complain!" The woman reached for her shoulder bag and slammed a plastic wrapper on the table before you, "This bread was dry as a desert and it obviously had nuts in it!"

"Oh, and-!"

"I could have died!" The woman shouted as she glared at you, "I demand compensation for all the suffering I've been exposed to!"

You frowned, "I'm sorry Ma'am, of course, but all our breads clearly state what's in them. May I see your receipt-?"

"And I'm telling you idiot that there were nuts in this!"

Okay, this lady was clearly a Karen that you had heard about. You frowned, not really sure how to handle this. If Karen kept shouting like she was doing she would finally alert Tanjiro and his mother and those pure loving people wouldn't be able to handle a Karen! She would eat them alive, so you were on your own!

…Or so you thought.

"Ma'am…" Muichiro grabbed the plastic wrapper and looked at it, "This isn't this bakery's product."

"W- wha-!?" The Karen stuttered angrily, "What, are you calling me a liar!?"

"Well…" The younger twin shrugged and his older brother grabbed the wrapper," This is clearly a supermarket bread. And it states with big letters that there might be traces of nuts in it."

"Can't you read?"

"I-!" The Karen scowled, "How should I have noticed that!?"

"Usually when you're allergic to something, the first thing you do is check the list of the ingredients." Muichiro hummed and his brother snorted, "Are you even allergic to nuts?"

"I could have been!" Karen shouted and Muichiro rolled his eyes, "So you're basically crying wolf?"

"W- What-!?"

"Oh, sorry, let us make it simple so even you lady can understand," Yuichiro smirked, "It means you are exaggerating over nothing."

"I-!" Karen turned to look at you, "Are you going to let your employees talk to me like that!?"

"Ma'am, they are paying customers." You shrugged but you couldn't help but smile smugly, "Unlike you."

"We certainly see some nut in here and it's not in the bread." The twins chuckled and the Karen turned red as a beet as she was humiliated.

"That's it! I'm leaving and never coming back here!" She screamed, quickly turning to leave the bakery.

"Don't let the door hit you on the way out!" You called after her and smiled, "Have a nice life!"

"Bite me!" She snapped and just like that, she was gone. You and the twins glanced at each other and the three of you couldn't help but laugh a little. That's when Tanjiro entered the room.

"I'm sorry, we were whipping cream so we couldn't hear anything!" The young man smiled as he looked around, looking confused to see only you and his friends there, "Did someone shout in here?"

"No one important." You and the twins said exactly the same time and Tanjiro smiled, "I'm happy to see you three get along! Cake should be done soon so please make yourselves comfortable and I'll call you when it's done!"

"Thank you, Tanjiro!" The boys smiled and you nodded as the Kamado returned to the backroom. Once he was gone again, you turned to look at the twins and nodded at them, "Thanks…"

"No worries," Muichiro nodded and so did Yuichiro, "You looked like a fish out of water."

"Yeah… One would think I'm used to shouting idiots and tyrants…" You sighed as you crossed your arms, "Living here has made me soft."

"That's the Kamado effect," The twins smiled, "So don't worry, you aren't the only one."

Speaking of Kamado, when you talk about them one appears!

"Cake is done!" Tanjiro cheered, "Come and get some!"

"Coming!" The twins called as they stepped around the counter and moved to enter the private section of the bakery.

You smiled a little as you watched them go, "Hey?"

"Hm?"

"I know we didn't start with a right foot." You looked away a little stubbornly, "So… Sorry about earlier, and happy birthday to you two."

"Thanks," They both nodded with small smiles as they entered the backroom and you hummed as you returned to the register… Then Tanjiro popped up with a huge smile, "Yuichiro and Muichiro asked if you would like to join us?"

"W-?" You blinked, stunned by the offer, "Really?"

"Yes!" The young man smiled so happily and you found yourself unable to say no to him, "Tch, okay, but I'm not singing any birthday songs…"

(💕) The Moms of KNY

Well, seeing as this IS a SHIP swap AU, and I am swapping the major canon ships(AKA both members were named in canon, and they were actually together), that means some of the moms have been switched with their husbands! So, how did their stories change?

Ruka Rengoku -> After saving Obanai(who is switched with Mitsuri) much earlier than in canon, Shinjurou fell ill. He kept going on missions pretty much until he died, leaving Ruka a widow with two young sons to raise and the Demon Slayers without a Flame Hashira. Ruka, however, took it in stride as best she could. She mourned her husband, comforted her boys, then got to work. It didn't take her long to become a Slayer, having begun training in secret when Shinjurou developed symptoms, and was the new Flame Hashira within three years. However , she always insisted she was only ensuring the position was filled until either Kyojurou and Senjurou were eligible to fill the spot. During her time in the Corps, she also trained her sons as best she could, and rescued a little girl from the same island Shinjurou had picked up Obanai on. After Kyojurou became eligible to fill the position of Flame Hashira, Ruka stepped down from the Corps.

Kie Kamado -> After Tanjirou and Nezuko disappeared, their loss took its toll on both Kamado parents. After all, it was their first son and first daughter that went missing. They could never replace any of their kids with new children, much less their eldest two. Both parents ran themselves ragged trying to keep themselves mentally and financially afloat, while also taking care of their remaining and future children. Kie fell ill during her last pregnancy; Rokuta. She could barely leave bed, leaving her husband to take over her chores. Were it not for Kanao and Zenitsu, who had become part of the family thanks to Tanjurou and Saburou, she didn't doubt Tanjurou would have worked himself into sickness as well. When the day came for her to deliver her sixth and final child, it was nigh impossible for Kie just to stay conscious. She knew she wasn't going to make it long past the birth. A part of her wondered whether she would see her eldest children again, on the other side. But another part of her desperately hoped they were still alive, and would find their way home someday. Kie passed away moments after her last son was brought into the world, and watched her family until they joined her in the afterlife.

Amane Ubuyashiki -> Amane, like the rest of her family line, was born with her fate decided because of Muzan Kibutsuji. She would die before she reached thirty years of age. Despite that, she led the Demon Slayers with grace and patience ever since she was four years old. Very few have seen anything other than a serene neutrality upon her face, even among the Hashira. Her often unwavering expression is considered unnerving by some, and awe-inspiring by others. She's often accompanied by her husband, Kagaya, or one of their five children, especially when the Curse took her sight. She is a woman of steel resolve, and is often considered a maternal or elder sister-like figure to the Slayers under her command. Despite her frail appearance, she is not to be underestimated. She more than makes up for her physical weakness with an excellent strategic mind, something she had ensured she developed upon becoming the Mistress of the Demon Slayer Corps. Some say that skill has been passed on to her children.
