So, I actually listened to this song a while ago (thanks Youtube algorithm!) and meant to say something about it, but I legitimately forgot. But now I've remembered, mwaha! This song is called Be My Guest, and for the life of me I can't find out who the song artist is! (I think they might just not have a name?) So I'm linking this song at the end so y'all can find it and listen to it.
(EDIT: I think their name is Azari, whoops. I'm still linking the song tho.)
Also, I would like to add a disclaimer before I even start talking about this song, lol. I do not know any actual names to describe any of the instruments, so if it starts sounding like I'm talking about nonsense, that's why.
So. This song is so good but in a sneaky way! It doesn't come out with any loud instrumentals or emotional singing. It's quiet and soft and sneaky and I LOVE it so much! I love this song's vibe and everything! The music is really simple but eases into the background, and the vocals at first just follow the beat, which sets up a really sly, really calm sort of song that still is easy to jam to. Like you could close your eyes and just relax to this song. You'd end up dancing a little, of course, because the beats are just too immaculate and well-placed to avoid not snapping to them, but it fills the silence in a way that's fulfilling but quiet. There's something definitely there, but it doesn’t demand your full attention. You can do something else while letting this play in the background and take up the back of your thoughts. (Which was why I was going to play this while working when I'd remembered I hadn't wrritten about this song yet.)
Then it adds a lil jazziness to it with some more off-beat beats (that sound kinda like a maraca, actually)! And I love these beats! They're so good that I can almost taste them in my mouth and savor how good they are, mm! The jam levels surpass pure vibing and get me to tap my foot, it's so nice! Now the song's taken up a lil more conscious thought, just enough to realize hey, this is frickin good, but you're still just enjoying the musical silence that it has.
But it doesn’t stay that way! This song has the AUDACITY to pause, take away the new syncopated beats, and leave the end up of beat undefined and (lyrically) silent! And I UTTERLY. LOVE IT. When you're not expecting it, it's like you've been vibing ever harder as the song goes on and you expected to vibe more from the build, but then the music drops out from under you and gives a slower, more careful answer. Like someone is sneaking behind you (which fits with the lyrics)! And the suddenness plus how good the slow down is gives me shivers. I love this part! It blends into the background less, but it's so good and satisfying to vibe to! And there are random real-life sounds in there (like a car horn) that don't sound random or jarring at all! Everything sounds so smooth and well-produced and satisfying!
And then after that, the song goes back to vibing with a few more beats added and it's just... When I'm paying attention to the song, the vibing and fulfilling drop and return to vibing makes me want to cry happy tears, and when I'm not paying attention, it makes me want to wave my hands and tap the beat into anything I can find. Like it's so good that I have to let the music out somehow.
And the end! The end of the song is so slow and sly and MM so good! And the art is so beautiful, I had to say something about it! And the way this song blends the roboticness of the vocaloid's lyrics, the music, and the real-life sounds is just wonderful! This whole song just feels well-produced in a way that even someone with no experience producing music can tell! Like the song artist knows just when to push and pull back to make an awesome song!
This song is so good for working because it's so varied and interesting yet quiet and unobtrusive about it! And honestly, I love it so much that it immediately got put onto my Vocaloid playlist! I recommend it to literally anyone!!
Here's the link to the song:

Ok nobody cares but here’s my opinions on Puss in Boots: The Last Wish
the main villain is actually terrifying
the romance is actually really good
Perrito is literally so soft and amazing
the Goldilocks and the Three Bears found family was a little weird to follow, but very sweet
I love how “Big” Jack Horner was an evil rich big businessman who didn’t have a redemption arc (Dreamworks really said eat the rich, kids)
the animation was really cool and very satisfying
bangin soundtrack

Woah, I've appeared again! I've been summoned from the shadow realm to listen to Lollyland Tour by Madotspooki! And gosh, this song is just as spooky and deceiving as the last Madotspooki song I listened to.
First of all, this is a freakin good song. It starts off with a slow vibe and a bit of harpsichord (I think) but immediately throws that slowness away and jumps into a fast-paced lil jig with lyrics all dancing around the beat and bass like a heartbeat thumping in my ears. And ohmygod this is such a wonderful start to a song! I got interrupted like three times before I could finish listening to this song, and each time I rewound all the way to the beginning because I loved this part and wanted to hear it again. It's so jam-worthy, it's impressive! And it gets me bopping right at the beginning of the song! I love how the lyrics never just stick to the beat and just tiptoe around it like a good dance routine! It just draws me even more into the song!! But at the same time, even though the lyrics and stuff make the song seem all happy, if you listen to just the music behind everything, it sounds super ominous and worrying, like the standard music that would play in a video game once you reach a part where you're hiding from the bad guys. I didn’t even notice it at first but I love that lil bit so much after my first listen!
Also there's five vocaloids singing in this song! And they make harmonies!! With each other!!! I love it, I love it so much!
This whole first part of the song (before it gets obviously dark) is just. Marvelous. It's so boppy and jam-worthy and I love it. It gets me all dancing and vibing in my seat. This is the kind of song where even if you listen to it as part of a playlist in the background, as soon as it comes on, you've gotta pause in your work at least a couple of times just to dance a lil. Like that's not just a requirement, it's unavoidable. And it's beautiful.
And I love the hint of my gosh, wait, this isn't all sweet. Umm, that's worrying, oh no that pops up briefly. So fun!
But when the bottom drops out of the song (literally, the protagonist in the song falls into an abyss), the bass just starts screaming and it's wonderful! Just the unraveling of the constraints that the bass was under (from relatively sticking to the 4/4 count to just hitting whenever) is amazing to hear! But then the bass switches to another beat and the lyrics start up again, and it feels like the song is just dying. Like it's the desperate struggles of someone running around trying to escape their inevitable death. Which fits with the song, lol. But also when combined with the beginning of the song paints a picture of someone vibing and having fun before realizing they're in danger, trying not to die, and failing. It's such a fun thing to listen to musically!
Honestly, I'm getting the impression that a bunch of the Madotspooki songs I'll listen to are gonna just seem all happy and light-hearted and then stab me in the back with some spooky gore or gory implications or something, and I'm kinda here for it!
Also CAN I SAY! The lyrics "Brimestone flames, burning pains, exposed brains, no more" playing on the "Candy canes, sugar plains, party games, even more"?? So good!
And then the song breaks into harmonies, except one set of lyrics is talking in first person and one's talking in third person. (And I LOVE these harmonies!! It makes the song flow so much smoother and it's such a vibe!) And then it layers with the lyrics above and the bass gets louder and there's so much going on. But it's such a vibe. And then the lyric "I'm on cloud nine and it feels like I'm dreaming" repeats but it leads to something new and more sinister this time! (Which, I feel like is basically a summary of this whole song. Something nice repeated in a malicious context.)
Then, finally, everything slows down a bit. And when the girl sings, the demon buddy answers, which I love (and I love their voice!! So smooth and cool!) Then the song has a lil breakdown, which is also really nice for keeping the vibe while slowing things down a bit (cause everything was starting to get a bit too much for a moment there). And the song transitions to just some bells ringing before ending. I really like how the bells suddenly left silence in their wake since the song went from loud bass to just that. It doesn’t ease you out of the excitement from before and leaves you jittery and nervous, while the bells definitely signal that the poor girl's dead. Poor buddy.
But yeah, this song's really good! It's more of a song to listen to while doing something physical so you can dance to the beat and all. And gosh, now I'm kinda tired from listening to it over and over again, but it was fulfilling. I'm really glad I listened to it! Thanks @/viscaeriic for recommending this song to me, and I can definitely hear the Christmas vibe (if Christmas was deadly, lol). This is going onto my Vocaloid playlist for sure!

Exceptional X-Men #1 is out and it's very good
Exceptional X-Men #1, by Eve Ewing, Carmen Carnero, Nolan Woodard, and Joe Sabino
Tumblr media
So, I knew Exceptional X-Men was going to rock just based on the fact that it's a Kitty Pryde book set in Chicago. I love Kitty Pryde and I love it when Marvel does stuff outside New York, plus Chicago's one of my favorite cities. Also, I can't think of a single comic that isn't improved by having Emma Frost around to do whatever the hell she wants, so, yeah, already sold.
It ended up being better than I expected, though! It felt really personal and focused on Kitty, which was great. I love Ewing's characterization for her; she's different from her New Mutants or Excalibur era, but still feel like the same character, just now with the weight of her years of experience since then. I think the low stakes of this issue -- it's basically about her cancelling a date -- made for a unique break from what you expect from the genre.
(Also, glad to have it in writing that Kitty is bi, that's been "kinda/sorta" canon for basically the entirety of her existence.)
I really liked the rest of the cast this book introduces. I think Priti is brand new to this book, which is cool. The mutant Kitty meets, Trista, feels unique, her power is cool, and you get a nice sense of who she is from this first issue. I look forward to seeing more of her!
I also really love the art in this. I've never seen Carnero's work before, but I really like her style. I love how Kitty is drawn -- not a direct translation of Alan Davis's design, necessarily, but, again, clearly the same character. Also, she managed to do something which I'm VERY envious, which is capture the look of Chicago from every exterior and interior shot. There's something about the openness of the frames that is exactly how I picture Chicago.
There's not a lot of Emma Frost in this issue, but I assume she'll be around to recruit Kitty to a new, midwestern X-Men team soon, and based on what she says in this issue, that's a call Kitty's going to reject. I...doubt Emma takes that well XD
Also...

Kitty Pryde plays guitar?? This is distressing for me, personally.

☆ Mama's Lamp - American Mix
Locked Groove

☆ Shine On

☆ Caught High

Beats and Breaks from the Flower Patch by Kitty Craft (Pamela Valfer) is an endearingly sweet lofi/indie pop album released in 1998
the whimsical mix of trip hop drums and dainty twee vocals is perfectly encapsulated in the playful album cover - the tracklist feels like something that really came from the heart, with looping breaks and samples that are warmly reminiscent of childhood nostalgia
i dont think i can think of a better way to describe this album other than the title itself, as it truly sounds like beats and breaks from the flower patch
with love,

Have you seen Puss in Boots: the Last Wish? If so, what did you think of it? I feel you'd like it!
Yes!
I do love it!
Here’s my one beef.
I’m not a big fan of the…kitschiness that Dreamworks loves with some of their movies. In terms of character design, and writing. There’s something that goes on in the design department for characters in Shrek or in Megamind or even in Boss Baby that does not go on in The Croods or How to Train Your Dragon or Kung Fu Panda. Like, even the characters who are supposed to be “evil” or “stupid” are designed to be outright unappealing. And that’s not the necessarily a principle I think is great, even though it sounds like it makes sense on paper. You’ve got this:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Versus this:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I don’t know if I can accurately describe the difference. Let me try.
Titan looks like he’s got moisture on his upper lip. Jack Horner’s individual traits all maxed out to the extreme: hair, the teeth, the fat rolls—it’s all way too much. Same thing is going on with the sweatiness of the characters (even Link?) in Monsters vs. Aliens, the skin texture and individual eyebrow hairs on Farquaad, etc.
It’s too much. And it’s too much because someone in that studio thinks it’s funny to have ugly characters. And you know what, it is, but you can have “ugly” without evoking a “I don’t want to look at that” response in your audience. Drago Bludvist is ugly. He’s lopsided and scarred and looks like he got run over by a car. But you don’t look at him and feel like you’re looking at a middle school kid’s caricature with nose hairs drawn in, designed to make you hate it on sight.
You want your villains and your stupid characters to look villainous and stupid. But there’s only so much “middle school boy booger humor” you can put in character design before I start wanting to change the channel just because it’s not fun to look at anymore.
Didn’t mean to ramble about character design. My point was, Jack Horner kills the movie for me.
I get that they just wanted a plain-bad bad guy. Death is sick but he’s just doing his job. Puss is redeemed, Goldilocks is redeemed. They needed just a straight-up evil bad guy for the climax. But like…he’s gross. Not in a way that’s engaging or interesting to watch, or even fun to watch lose. He’s unappealing, he’s annoying, he’s over the top. You’re not excited to see him die because you don’t want to see him, doing anything, even if it’s dying.
And you know what…Perrito is the same way. They did not succeed with “cute-enough-to-be-ugly.” They did not succeed with “annoying enough to be funny because of how he interacts with the main characters.” He’s just ugly, and he’s just annoying. They needed him as a character. They needed a simpleminded-innocent-love-is-enough buddy for Puss to spend time with and learn from. But…gross. Disgusting bald dog with over-the-top “I’m just happy-go-lucky just beCAUSE! 😃” whiny voice did not have to be the choice.
Anyway.
I love that Puss starts out the movie with his sword and it’s a metaphor for how he has to be the Puss in Boots, the greatest of all time, the big hotshot, the fantastic hero. And then by the end he’s using that tiny blade. It’s just small. It’s borrowed. It’s not even his. That’s what he needed all along. To accept his one, small life, as long as it has love in it, instead of reaching for immortality and fame and being all-in-all to himself.
I love Death. Obviously. Very good character design, great acting, great scenes, perfect thing for Puss to be up against. They couldn’t have done better with him.
I don’t think Kitty Softpaws and Perrito needed to be in this movie. I think they really should’ve kicked Perrito out of the movie and shown that Kitty Softpaws was a former “Perrito type” character, maybe in her past and childhood, and the more they go on this journey to get the Wish together, the more she starts to soften back into that because she’s starting to go back to trusting Puss. Then he sees he’s having that affect on her, and likes it, and gets conflicted. More nuanced. Less annoying. More interesting. And that would make their little love story more endearing. He thinks they’re just playing each other as always, at first, but then realizes she’s actually trusting him, and he’s enjoying that, and the guilt mounts until she figures out he’s going to take the wish for himself—then they have their little confrontation where Death is after him and that’s why he wants it. My emotions would’ve been so much more invested. But because Kitty has to share screentime and a role in Puss’s character development with annoying bald dog, there’s not enough time for her to feel like a fully-fleshed-out-character.
I like Goldilocks and the three bears. They’re a great little side-plot. I think Goldy could’ve been given more time to develop into—again—a more nuanced character, but it worked anyway.
So in conclusion, I wish Dreamworks could work even harder and dig even deeper in some of their movies to make a more nuanced cast, for the sake of their stories. Spend less time on stupid jokes and meta-references and more on making their characters feel real. Puss in Boots was a good movie, it just doesn’t have that “it was beautiful and I’d watch it again” factor because of all the time-wasting and over-the-top character designs. I’d rather look up a few key scenes that were good, but rewatching it like I would Zootopia or How to Train Your Dragon? No.
