King James II
Artist: Benedetto Gennari (Italian, 1633-1715)
Date: c. 1685
Medium: Oil on canvas
Collection: National Army Museum, London, United Kingdom
King James II
This painting identifies King James II (1633-1701) in his role as head of the Army. He wears a General Officer's State coat, and the lines of troops in the distance probably refer to the annual review of the Army which took place on Hounslow Heath, outside London.
James II's brief reign from 1685 to 1688 witnessed a considerable growth in the English Standing Army. As a Roman Catholic, James preferred his regiments to be officered wherever possible by fellow Catholics, whom he regarded as the most loyal. He also relied on a number of Protestant career-soldiers whom he believed would be loyal to the crown. However a key group of these men, including John Churchill (later Duke of Marlborough), became disaffected, objecting to the King's attempts to Catholicise the Army in defiance of the Test Act and his religious policy in general. Unfortunately for the King, they concluded that their interests would be better served by William Prince of Orange (1650-1702), the husband of James's Protestant daughter Princess Mary (1662-1694).
In 1688, William invaded England at the invitation of these officers, to prevent an alliance with his enemy, King Louis XIV of France, and to secure his wife's inheritance. William secured an almost bloodless victory in England through the defection of troops to his cause, though there was subsequently bitter fighting in Ireland and Scotland. Disgusted by this act of betrayal, James fled to France, where he lived in exile at St Germain. With this 'Glorious Revolution', William and Mary succeeded to the throne.

#OTD in 1689 – Siege of Derry began.
In 1685, the Roman Catholic James II came to the throne of England. His agent Richard Talbot, earl of Tyrconnell, started to dismiss Protestant officers from the army in Ireland, replacing them with Roman Catholics. For English Protestants, the last straw came when the birth of a son to his second wife meant that his Protestant daughter Mary would not succeed to the throne. In the summer of 1688,…

Random fact: in 1457 King James II. banned golf and football in Scotland, because he was worried men weren't practicing archery enough.

The Twelfth
Tumblr media
Source: The Guardian
Today is The Twelfth in Ulster and parts of Scotland when the Orange Order, which was founded in 1795, march through towns and cities to commemorate the victory of the Protestant William of Orange over the Catholic King James II at the Battle of Boyne in 1690. The victory ensured the success of the 1688 Glorious Revolution in the United Kingdom and the deposition of James. It also ensured the continuance of the Protestant ascendancy in Ulster and the domination of its Catholic minority which continued at least until the 1999 Good Friday Agreement. As a result, the Orange Order marches have been flashpoints for political tension and sectarian conflict each year.
A slightly more benign commemoration of the Boyne is the Sham Fight which takes place on or about the 12th at Scarva, near Portadown in County Down. Scarva was where William camped the night before the battle and each year after an Orange parade, the battle is re-staged as a fight between two horsemen, one decked out as William and the other as King James. William (known by Ulster Protestants as “King Billy”) of course wins every time.

The voice of our generation has fallen.
General, prepare your troops for a surface attack.
Now they will know why they are afraid of the dark. Now they will learn why they fear the night.
So you see, my son, there is a very fine line between love and nausea.
Everything the light touches…is our kingdom

This was originally meant to be a 100% goofy funny comic, but somehow it turned into angst halfway through. I still think it's funny that Minimus canonically learns the truth before Amber and James though.
(And thanks to @ograndebatata for helping me rewrite the script to be more fitting).
Comic Script: Roland: … So, now you know the truth about my first wish on the well. I'm sorry I didn't tell you before. If any of you has anything to say, please do. Roland: Okay… one at a time please. James: Does this mean I'm half-wishing well? If someone put a coin in my mouth could I grant their wishes? Roland: WHAT?! NO! Absolutely not! Sofia: I'm sorry dad. Minimus and I already knew, and I think he has told every horse in the kingdom by now. Roland: That's not… how did you…? Amber: Daddy… does that mean I could have killed Sofia when I turned her into a cat? Would she be dead because of me? Roland: No Amber. That wouldn't have happened. Don't worry, no one got hurt. Amber: But Sofia almost was! Roland: But she wasn't. She's alright. All of you are. I'm sorry I only told you now. but please remember we both love you all very much. And we'll all get through this together.

umm guys i'm new to the sofia the first fandom and i made an au
it's probably the most basic and unoriginal thing ever LMAO but hear me out guys hear me out
and if something about this is like not original because it's part of the canon series, please forgive me i'm only on the last episodes of season two HAHAHA
so basically queen miranda dies rescuing sofia from something idk
and king roland is like DEVASTATED and he ends up blaming sofia for miranda's death and starting to resent her and treat her very badly. amber and james try to defend sofia, but it only makes things worse for all of them, so sofia urges amber and james to stay safe. but roland's treatment towards sofia grows worse and worse, and sofia turns to the amulet for help, but she gets nothing.
that's where cedric comes in. cedric has always sort of seen sofia as a daughter figure (not consciously) and when he finds out about what roland is doing, he's furious. he takes sofia and runs with her, abandoning enchancia and everything in it, including his job as royal sorcerer. it's the hardest decision he ever made, but he knows that nobody else will be there for sofia. nobody else would dare disobey the king.
so sofia and cedric have run away, off to another kingdom. and sofia is, of course, very grateful that cedric rescued her. but as they're wandering, sofia discovers cedric's plans to steal her amulet. she's heartbroken and terrified. was this the real reason why cedric took her away? to try and steal her amulet and take over enchancia? sofia has no idea who to trust or what to believe. what she doesn't know is that cedric gave up on the amulet and doesn't want to rule the kingdom if it means that any harm comes to sofia. but he realizes that too late, and she discovers the secret too late. so now, cedric has no idea that sofia knows, and he thinks everything is great.
so ummm yeah!
