Queen Mary's Chain-Link Bracelets

Two flexible bracelets, the rectangle pave-set chain links with channel-set baguettes, one bracelet with three buckle shaped panels, each mounted with a brilliant in rub-over setting, the other of very similar design, set with two brilliant collets and a central brooch element (originally detachable), mounted with a large brilliant; with snap fastening to join together as a collar.

The first bracelet (with three brilliants), of subdued modernist design, was purchased by Queen Mary in 1932, and was something of a departure in the Queen's otherwise fairly traditional choice of jewellery.

The second bracelet was made to match in 1935, and can link with the first to form a collar necklace. The second bracelet was also designed to take a detachable brooch, made in 1934 and set with a 9 3/4 carat brilliant from the Premier Mine in South Africa.

The stone, cut in 1933, was presented to Queen Mary by the Diamond industry of South Africa at the opening of the South Africa House in the same year.

The brooch and bracelets were bequeathed by Queen Mary to the late Queen Elizabeth, who only wore them as bracelets.

When a ceremonial monarch who largely didn't do anything died, tumblr cheered about it because she symbolised colonialism and imperialism. Not because of anything she personally did, but because of her *symbolism*.

When someone dies who personally presided over mass executions of political dissidents, oversaw as a political leader massive repression of women, religious minorities and ethnic minorities and helped organise genocide and civil war throughout the Middle East, only Iranian and Jewish tumblrs are saying anything.
