It's Manuscript Monday, and today we're exploring how to pick the right platform for publishing your book. Let’s break down IngramSpark, Amazon's KDP, and Kobo.
Amazon's KDP offers incredible reach and exclusive promotions like free eBook days and Kindle Countdown Deals. The catch? You must stay exclusive to Amazon for eBooks during these promotions.
IngramSpark is perfect for getting your book into physical stores, offering great print quality and wide distribution. But, it comes with higher setup costs and a steeper learning curve.
Kobo excels in international markets, especially Canada, and doesn't require exclusivity. However, it has a smaller audience compared to Amazon.
Thinking of using an aggregator? They distribute to multiple platforms for convenience, though they take a slice of your sales.
Choose based on where your audience is, the book type, and your preferred involvement level. Each platform has its perks! Personally, my favorite platform is KDP, but what's yours and why?
Got questions or tips about self-publishing? Drop them below! Let’s help each other out. Happy writing!

Living in North America, even when you aren’t celebrating Christmas, it feels like you're celebrating Christmas.
Promptly on November 1st, the red, white and green festivities begin and their brilliant hues are inescapable. There are elves on shelves and an inflatable Frosty on roofs. And Santa! He really is always watching you as he’s plastered on every surface. He sees you when you’re sleeping because he’s on the half-eaten chocolate wrapper on your dresser. He knows when you’re awake because he’s also on your cereal box, milk carton, and morning coffee sleeve.
Around this time of year, there is a spike in cases of FOMO within first and second-generation immigrants whose holiday rosters do not include Christmas. For over fifty days, they are stuck between a rock and a jolly place because Christmas can be… tempting. The twinkling lights are alluring, the merry melodies are mesmerizing, the promise of gifts is promising, and so the fear of missing out can be all-consuming. It all starts on an ordinary November morning when suddenly, "the holiday spirit" infuses everything the light touches. Every mode and medium has a Yuletide tinge, and every sector of life has a little trimming. For two months, these FOMO-ridden individuals trapeze through jagged tinsel and paper-cut sharp wrapping paper, trying to maneuver in the aftermath of Big Hallmark’s joyous rampage.
In schools, children sing carols in winter pageants, some only mouthing the words to Silent Night or hesitantly rockin’ around a Christmas tree.
There's no argument that these activities can spark joy, and that's precisely the problem. Celebrating, the very act of it, is fun. Whether it’s Halloween, a wedding, an achievement, however minimal, or even a dog’s birthday, people find reasons to come together and celebrate. But in this case, Christmas is not theirs to celebrate. Some people have a little voice in their heads that nettles them each time they put on reindeer ears or take part in Secret Santa. Depending on the individual, it could be their conscience screaming, “What would my parents say?”
In the winter whirlwind of hope, excitement, and merriment, it’s almost impossible to not want to be a part of it all, even subconsciously. It’s difficult to deny that Christmas is fun.
Especially since celebrating non-Christian holidays in the West can be challenging.
There are no signature drinks or holiday hours. There are no lights and most definitely no statutory days off. Christmas is fun because of the sheer scale. The stakes are high with countdowns, giveaways, and so many parties.
Christmas isn’t just a day you celebrate, it’s a season. It’s a pallette and a theme. It’s a genre of music and film. It’s a category of dessert, dinner, and beverage.
That said, it’s difficult to compete with all the fanfare that happens each year in December. Parents are often compelled to go above and beyond to get their kids excited about their own celebrations. Usually with the help of old reliable Mr. Chuck E. Cheese and even older — and therefore more reliable — Mr. Wad of Cash. Worse yet, when one has to justify their need for a day off to a manager who is apparently fascinated by their religion, people can’t help but pray for patience, or better yet, a miracle.
A miracle in which there is no rock by the jolly place. What if a certain non-Christian American demographic could celebrate their holiday at the same time as everyone else? What if they could ride on the Christmas coattails of vacation days, holiday parties, and sales? What if a certain non-Christian religious holiday coincided with Christmas and millions more could wholeheartedly celebrate together with the masses? What if, for example, Eid al-Adha fell on December 24th?
Wouldn’t that be a miracle?

Everything I know about Kindle/eBooks
Some of you are great writers and have no desire to become professional writers. That's fine. This post is for individuals wanting to start with Kindle or eBooks. I have a few short stories published on Kindle (KDP). Any inaccurate information will be corrected ASAP.
Tumblr media
Rights: You own all rights to your book. Amazon only has the right to sell your eBook which you can revoke at any time.
Pricing: You set the price BUT Amazon can adjust it for promotions or if they find your book priced lower elsewhere.
Royalties/Payouts: This is a little complicated. Depending on criteria, you can get 35% or 70% of the book's sale price. You get paid 60 days after the end of the month when the sale was made. Person buys book on Aug 2nd, Oct 31st is when it'll be paid out. For 70%, you must allow your book to be lent to others, sold in countries where the 70% is offered, and priced between 2.99-9.99 including on other platforms.
Exclusive, Amazon-Only Distribution: You'll be enrolled in the Kindle Unlimited which pays based on pages read ($0.10 a page), allows full royalty payout even with Kindle Countdown Deals or free book promotions. You can only sell it here, not on a personal website or another platform. Amazon has full rights to your eBook with this option but ONLY your eBook, no other medium.
Non-Exclusive: You can sell your eBook on other platforms. Pricing control is better, broader audience reach. You will not get the $0.10 a page or full royalty payout when deals/discounts happen.
Choosing between Exclusive/Non-exclusive: You can switch between the two. If you go from Exclusive to Non-Exclusive, there's a 90-day waiting period before you can post it on other platforms. Non-Exclusive to Exclusive has no waiting period but you must remove your eBook from other sites. You do not have to remove physical books, audiobooks, or other adaptations.
Tumblr media
You can use mobi, epub, or docx. Kindle also has a tool for checking to see how your book will look on a device.
Tumblr media
Second thing I want to talk about is Kindle Vella. It is Amazon's episodic release system. I'm only listing the differences between this and KDP (Kindle).
Rights: Amazon has exclusive rights to distribute it episodically, meaning you can't publish it elsewhere while its on Vella. You can publish the finished story as an eBook however.
Pricing: Vella's readers purchase tokens to unlock episodes and that price is entirely controlled by Amazon.
Royalties/Payouts: Vella's payouts are 50% of the cost of the tokens spent by readers. 60 day payout from purchase date.
Exclusive: Vella requires 100% exclusivity to use. There doesn't seem to be a way to revoke this until the story is finished or deleted.
Non-Exclusive: There is no non-exclusive option for Vella.
Tumblr media
Personally, I think exclusive KDP is the route to go for starting writings. It gives you more exposure and if anyone does read, you still get a little bit of money. After 90 days, you can re-assess and consider other options.

As the holiday season approaches, I gotta know-
Where can we purchase your books? Are they still on sale?
Yes! 8D They both are! I mean, they're for sale currently, and they'll be going on sale very soon. At least the Kindle versions. I'm so glad to hear you're interested!
Here's links to both books!
A Fool's Endeavor:
You may notice, but I got a new cover done for A Fool's Endeavor! ^_^ I know it seems a little too late to update it, but I just wanted to do it because I wasn't super happy with the Amazon Cover Creator cover. Here's the new cover:
Tumblr media
A Fool's Golden Cage:
Beloved sequel, not much more description is needed. XD Here's its cover for comparison.
Tumblr media
Now I HAVE been working on the next sequel. the third book, A Lost Fool's Paradise. It was just slowed down once I began doing the whole Youtube thing- but it is going well! Too early to feel comfortable showing anything as it might be, at the least, another year off.
Though I can confirm that Princess Vivianne and Alchemist Coffcord get larger roles. ;)
Now, on Black Friday, November 24th, both books- A Fool's Endeavor and A Fool's Golden Cage- will be on a Countdown deal. An Amazon countdown deal is where they start out at .99 cents and over the next couple of days return to their original prices.
The deal will be going on between the 24th and 30th, BUT on the 24th both books will be a dollar each! 8D
...And yes, I might have spontaneously decided to do this because of the interest in the books. XD But I hope you get to read them! Jester Lure is my baby both figuratively and (kinda) literally, and I like showing him off to whoever's around. 🃏

Today marks 7 years since the release of my first book! Woohoo! So, for the fun of it, I tried my hand at making a 'book trailer' for it in Canva. Also, the ebook will be on a Kindle Countdown sale on Amazon starting today (Sept. 13th) and slowly making its way back to full price on Sept. 20th. Link above.

About the Heirs of Tenebris trilogy:
For fans of character driven stories set in new fantastical worlds with a rich and mysterious history, original mythos, extraordinary characters, and magical adventures, readers travel through the heart of the Shadow Forest in book one, Fire & Flight, as seventeen-year-old Nyla and nineteen-year-old Xander each hope to find the legendary Fortune Falls—a mystical waterfall said to grant your deepest desires. But as their journey brings them into each other's confidences Nyla and Xander quickly realize that Nyla's newfound magical abilities and the answers she seeks extend much deeper than her own past. Embroiled in an ancient war for Tenebris's sovereignty, Nyla and Xander must reveal the truths hidden in the legends of the Shadow Forest before the centuries-old evil can destroy their homeland.
As they continue to unravel the mysteries surrounding them in book two, Embers of Eternity, Nyla and Xander are forced to face the deepest parts of themselves, leading to new discoveries they may not be prepared to face. Forced to trust outside forces and new allies, Nyla, Xander, and Shamira confront their pasts in order to mount a defense for not just their futures, but to protect the future of magic and all of Tenebris.
The trilogy's stunning conclusion, Winds of War, sees the past of 647 years ago collide with the present in a fierce battle for Tenebris's sovereignty and the sanctity of all of magic. Will Nyla and the forces assembled to assist her be able to defeat the legendary evil sorceress immortalized in the myths of the Shadow Forest? Or will Tenebris fall in the wake of the sorceress's wrath?

So, I published a Cinderella / Pride and Prejudice mashup last week. And it's already my fifth-highest grossing book, as it just passed the royalty total for the book I published ten years ago...
So, um, if anyone else wants to help me see how many more of my back titles it can outsell by the end of the month, that would be fun. The title is Crown and Cinder, and it is the second book of a series of Austen / Fairy tale mashups. (By the end of next year, I do plan to have all six of Austen's novels retold, and I have a fairy tale picked out for every one of them). It's pseudo-medieval worldbuilding with elemental magic, and I think they're pretty fun.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And if you'd like to check out some other fun Cinderella retellings, I just published Cindy Ellen, a short and sweet western-esque retelling by my mother, and my friend Sarah Pennington released Mask of Scarlet, which is a mystery set in a Jazz-era world with fae. It's delicious and I highly recommend the whole series. Bastian is the Best, and you all need to fall in love with him as much as I have.

Can y'all do a thing for me? Crown & Cinder, my Cinderella / Pride & Prejudice mashup, is currently 99 cents on kindle, and will be so for about a week. It's a countdown sale, meaning that I'm making the full 70% royalty.
I'd like to try to get 1,000 sales while it's a dollar. I'm currently sitting at one. So if the concept sounds intriguing to you (and it's a VERY fun story - Lizzy has fire magic!), please consider buying it - and sharing this post to spread the word. a thousand sales is a lofty goal, but I think if I can hit the algorithm right, it'll be possible. So, pretty please, go check it out.
(And, cough, book 1 will be 99 cents next week, but I dropped this one this week 'cause of scheduling issues. So keep an eye out for that.)

"He's only mean to you because he likes you."
Like many girls, I was told this by my mother, but it was always with the caveat: "And he lacks the emotional maturity to properly handle the attraction." And I think that's an important caveat that most girls need to hear - you can take the complement, you can let it boost your self-esteem, but move on. He's just an immature boy who isn't worth your time.
And, honestly, it can work both ways. Girls can be just as mean when they don't want to admit attraction.

"What your characters say is their motivation isn't in line with their character and actions."
Yup, it's called narrative dissonance. Homegirl ain't being honest enough with herself to admit what's actually driving her. Maybe she'll figure out over the course of the book, maybe we won't. Who knows. I love pitting show and tell against each other and seeing who comes out on top.

My #1 post of 2022
The secret of creating good art isn't talent, it's patience.
I'm an author, my sister draws and paints, but we both dabble in the other's wheelhouse.
And, one day, I had just hastily thrown together my cartoonish attempt at a fairy (Not terrible, but I've just accepted that my art style is on the cartoon side of things), and my sister starts telling me all the tricks and stuff that improves proportions and style ... and I just look at her and go, "I don't have the patience for that."
And she just pulls back, blinking. "But you sit there, hours upon hours, stringing words together for your books. Don't tell me you don't have patience."
"I do have patience for writing. Every word I write is visible progress, and I've moved forward in the story. But art is static. And I don't have the patience that allows me to pour hours and hours into something static. You, however, focus on that one image and chip away at until you have it."
My other main craft is knit and crochet. My sister sews. And I realize that this holds true. My patience is linear. I'll spend weeks and years on a project, just so long as each word or stich is a visible step forward. My sister's patience is more abstract. She will polish the details on a image until it's perfect, constructing elements until it fits her vision - but she won't give it the time I will. She wants to get things done and have them be over.
And neither one is wrong. Neither is unreasonable. But if you have an art you want to pursue, you have to give it patience. The patience to do the craft, and the patience to learn how to do it well.
And yes, some of us have a bit of talent that means we need a little less patience ... but that talent is just a head start. We still have to run the rest of the race.
