Cooked up some movie & TV h/cs...cuz I can

Overall

before the timeline of the movie, the monsters had a TV on occasions. This was a rare treat which lasted until the TV set broke on its own and couldn't be repaired or got destroyed

the monsters' rec area was like the hand-me-downs central; anything the staff didn't want or need anymore went to the monsters, from those playing cards to radios to whatever. It usually came from the trash heap for Dr C's meals

the 2000s brought a little variety as a lot of people at the base made the transition to DVDs and threw out their VCR sets and cassette tapes

after the post-freedom upgrade, the base set up on-demand entertainment for the monsters

for every streaming site, every monster has their own accounts. Except for Link & Butterflysaurus (or B) who share accounts

they can all agree on sit-coms and comedies, believe it or not, some film noir or some off-the-wall random movie

depending on the sport, they all like watching a good game

Susan

down for most anything anyone wants to watch

likes period and mid-century romance/dramas like Downton Abbey, Bridgerton, Call The Midwife, Mad Men, and anything based off Jane Austen's books

was a Twilight fan back in her teens and now cringes at those memories of being on Team Edward

chic flicks: Legally Blonde, Pretty Woman, The Notebook, Mamma Mia!, Audrey Hepburn movies. Titanic and Moulin Rouge! are both fully capable of making her cry almost every time. This is a very good reason why she has her own streaming accounts

can make it through most horror movies but doesn't really enjoy them

roots for all sports teams from Cali

the only monster most willing to watch whatever BOB wants to watch

liked watching cooking shows and DIY tutorials when she was small. She'll still watch them sometimes inspite of the fact she can't easily cook or pull off most DIYs

the kids' page on streaming sites & YouTube Kids all the way!

has the kid's tendency to watch the same thing over and over again and never get sick of it

the other monsters can't watch adult films and shows with him. He'll ask questions like, what's going on during a bedroom scene or "What's a [enter any profanity of your choice here]?". He's also a parrot who will mindlessly repeat a single swear word he only heard once

sometimes you'll find him watching random stuff like a Malaysian talk show or a Julia Child cooking tutorial or some abstract silent film

you know those kids' shows that interact with the audience, like Mr. Rogers, Blues Clues, & Dora the Explorer? Yeah, he REALLY gets into them

had a kids tablet for about two weeks but then accidentally ate it. Monger hasn't had the heart to give him another one

Dr C

his pastimes include lab experiments, reading books and science papers, playing chess (via a computer versus the CPU/another player online because no one at the base wants to play), and other mentally/intellectually stimulating activities, so he'll watch something if he wants and/or needs a mental break

the other monsters tried getting him into Big Bang Theory. To everyone's surprise, he didn't care for it

has BritBox

when he's chilling, he'll watch vintage/vintage-style musical movies, particularly with good dance numbers like Singin' In The Rain. One of his heroes in dance is Gene Kelly; Fred Astaire & Ginger Rogers would've been on his list, but he hasn't had a skilled dance partner offhand since his college days

likes videos like Ted Talks and Infographics Show (YouTube). He may be the most brilliant man in the world but he knows there's always more to learn

his YouTube subscriptions include dance groups and science lecturers from around the world

doesn't care much for most sports but he'll gladly watch polo and a lot of the Olympics. Tried to pass the time by reading a book during a football game once, and Link said, "Doc, if you don't put that book down, I'll throw you and that thing in the trash!". Never again

was into superhero movies and TV series in the 2010s but jumped off the bandwagon when he thought they were being overdone. Though he still likes Guardians of the Galaxy, Deadpool, and anything with Wolverine

doesn't care much for romances or most cartoons either

if something scares him or makes him cry, he'll try to hide it

having lived much of his 70+-year life away from society, he probably had no idea what TV & cinema were, let alone knew they existed

The Cyberian (my OC, a Soviet Russian cyborg and past monster, at Area 5X 1981-85)

TV became a bit of a staple in the Soviet Russian home over time, so there was a handful of shows that she liked throughout her life

she liked going to the movies with her dad/grandparents as a kid and teenager, a special treat

didn't like anything based off books. "Just read the book." She said. "No pictures but they're a lot more interesting than THIS sad piece of work"

thought period pieces were boring. More than once she fell asleep watching them

grew up with black-and-white TV, so she was excited the first time she saw color TV

learned some of her English from what little TV the monsters had and learned a bit about the USA and the world outside the USSR

probably would've been the only monster to have been a big fan of Star Wars and/or Star Trek

When did _____ jump the shark?

Because I'm a masochist, I looked through release-order cutscene compilations on Youtube to remind myself of the exact point in which Kingdom Hearts characters jumped the shark.

Sora: KH-COM-KH2-Days-BBS-Coded-3D-0.2-KH3-MOM

The idea of Ventus' heart becoming a part of Sora's was not a bad one, but not only is it botched by having it set up at the start by Sora's newborn heart communicating with Ventus' heart and healing it by connecting with it, this event sets the stage for "Blank Points" and its depiction of Sora as this Messianic hero who is so pure hearted that he can heal everyone's hurt, nay, is obligated to heal their hurt. Yes, it was 3D that first botched his personality, but even before that it was hard to enjoy him on the same level as before because of this.

Riku: KH-COM-KH2-Days-BBS-Coded-3D-0.2-KH3-MOM

Once again, a chance meeting between Terra and Riku was a good idea, but the execution proved devastating for Riku's character, as the scene completely reframes his character as this wise-beyond-his-years kid with the noble dream of venturing to other worlds to find "the strength to protect the things that matter" (protect them from what!?) This will continue to inform Riku's character going forward, and it does not work because it is at complete odds with his character beforehand, the one we saw back in the first KH who was immature and his yearning for other words - sparked only by Kairi's arrival on Destiny Islands, btw - was fundamentally rooted in selfishness. It's an overidealization that just makes Riku a bore.

Kairi: KH-COM-KH2-Days-BBS-Coded-3D-0.2-KH3-MOM

While Kairi's encounter with Aqua was also botched, it actually wasn't bad enough to damage her like Sora and Riku's similar encounters with members of the Wayfinder Trio were. Oh, but don't worry - "Blank Points" more than made up for that with the damage it did to her. She's only on screen for less than a minute, but what happens in that time is devastating: she smiles vacantly as Sora repeats the bullshit from the King's letter as a reason he has to leave, and in response she gives him her lucky charm again and simply says "See you soon". Um, NO. That's not Kairi; not how she was depicted and set up in KH2 anyway! Kairi had a Keyblade, she merged with Namine, she insisted on not waiting behind anymore....she even said "from now on wherever one of us goes, the other follows!" But now Nomura just pretends it never happened and rewrites her whole character into a bland love interest who won't be proactive or developed any further. No more Destiny Trio, it's just the Sora/Riku duo now.

Donald Duck: KH-COM-KH2-Days-BBS-Coded-3D-0.2-KH3-MOM

Goofy: KH-COM-KH2-Days-BBS-Coded-3D-0.2-KH3-MOM

Coded's 6th chapter was the point that game took a hard downturn in quality, which was already mixed to start with, and one of its biggest casualties was Donald and Goofy. It's difficult to explain, but something about their role in the Datascape's Hollow Bastion alongside Data Sora while actively calling back to the original KH's Hollow Bastion level really pisses me off. The game acts like it's being profound, but all its really doing is disrespecting the memory of that level's unparalleled awesomeness and cheapening Donald and Goofy's friendship with Sora by having it be so easily transferrable to a data copy who the game nonetheless insists is his own individual. While I loved seeing Sora, Donald and Goofy reunite in KH3, them and their dynamic wasn't quite the same; nowhere near as strong.

Mickey Mouse: KH-COM-KH2-Days-BBS-Coded-3D-0.2-KH3-MOM

King Mickey always had a serious edge to him which made him a cool character, but he was also still Mickey. That balance of whimsy and seriousness is what made him so great. But starting in 3D, the Mickey-ness gets sucked out of him and he's now a bland, serious, short-statured hero who is more or less just Yen Sid's flunky. I think the moment best cementing it is his confrontation with Master Xehanort, a guy he never interacted or even heard about in BBS but now 3D is acting like they're old rivals and Mickey is kicking himself for not realizing that of course Master Xehanort was behind everything as part of some omnipotent master plan, because it was so obvious in retrospect! And he only just got worse from there (Re:Mind excluded), with Bret Iwan painfully struggling more and more with the material he's given.

Terra: KH2-BBS-Coded-3D-0.2-KH3

In 3D, there are two scenes not too far apart from each other. One is Riku facing Ansem and out of nowhere bringing up Terra and how he still remembers him as the reason he can wield the Keyblade, the reason he wanted to go to other worlds so badly (fuck Kairi, then) and the driving inspiration behind "obtaining strength to protect what matters". And the other is the big confrontation in Organization XIII's throne room, where Master Xehanort confirms that Terra is still under his control. Together, these two scenes paint a clear picture: Terra isn't really a character anymore. He's an accessory. He's something that matters to actual characters such as his friends and Riku and Xehanort, but otherwise he's got nothing going on for himself.

Ventus: Days-BBS-Coded-3D-0.2-KH3

Ventus was a pretty iffy character to begin with, but nothing was flat-out ruining him until Union Xross came along and said "Surprise! He's actually a Keyblade wielder from the ancient past!" And as far as the mainline games go, KH3 is the one that brought that garbage into things, so it gets the nod. Ven, go play with your Chirithy and never bother us again, OK?

Aqua: BBS-Coded-3D-0.2-KH3

Aqua was a cool character in BBS, but she didn't really have much depth or even an arc. 0.2 gave her those things, so now she's all set for greatness in KH3, right? Hahahaha, wrong! Aqua's whole shtick in KH3 is making badass declarations and then immediately getting bodied in the most humiliating ways possible. Even that depth and character arc she got in 0.2 is rendered meaningless. It's so bad that Willa Holland's already subpar vocal delivery plummets to new levels of lifelessness. So much respect for a female Keyblade Master!

Jiminy Cricket: KH-COM-KH2-Coded-3D-KH3

Jiminy discovers technology in Coded. As later seen in KH3, it was a huge mistake.

Pluto: KH-COM-KH2-BBS-Coded-3D-KH3

He's just there, doing nothing. Get used to it, 'cause that's his new normal!

Yen Sid: KH2-BBS-Coded-3D-0.2-KH3-MOM

In KH2, Yen Sid was just a guy giving exposition and useful items to Sora, Donald and Goofy at the beginning of their quest in Mickey's place as a favor to him since Mickey was his pupil. In BBS, we get to see Mickey being his pupil and it's said Yen Sid was once a Keyblade Master, which is a cool detail and fits in perfectly with why Sora got a second Keyblade at his tower in KH2. But starting with the secret ending of Coded, Yen Sid suddenly becomes the Big Good, the leader of the guardians of light whom Mickey actively reports to and obeys even when he isn't studying under him anymore. Worse still, he is awful at his job; foolish, arrogant and hypocritical in the most frustrating ways. He gets one cool moment in KH3, but it's not enough to redeem him, especially when MOM puts him right back in his old ways.

Maleficent: KH-COM-KH2-BBS-Coded-3D-KH3

Pete: KH2-Days-BBS-Coded-3D-KH3

The other duo that Coded's 6th chapter ruined! In just the previous chapter things had been looking fine! Pete was great, and Maleficent had an awesome entrance at the very end where she destroys Data Sora's Keyblade! But then Maleficent, following a painful joke about her not understanding the word Datascape, reveals this is part of a plan to take over Disney Castle because...she didn't get Organization XIII's castle as was implied she would in KH2, which makes her arc in that game feel pointless just like Kairi's. And then we see Pete infiltrated the actual Disney Castle, which should be impossible due to the Cornerstone of Light, which has apparently just been forgotten about. Then she and Pete initiate that awful recreation of Hollow Bastion's events, insultingly merging Riku and Kairi's roles in the process. Three strikes, they're out. And ever since their last scene added in the cutscene movie version, they've been on the same fruitless quest for the Book of Prophecies, which is doomed to failure since the new OC Big Bad is even more omnipotent than Master Xehanort!

Namine: COM-KH2-Days-BBS-Coded-3D-KH3

OK, so on it's own, Namine's showing in Days might not have ruined her. It would just be a frustrating bit of character regression in a messily written game. But this always soft-spoken, sad and guilty-feeling, head-down and hands-clasped depiction of Namine ended up directly allowing the Data Namine we see in Coded to happen, which in turn opened up the bullshit "Thank Namine" retcon that has hounded her ever since. The poor girl deserved better.

DiZ: COM-KH2-Days-BBS-3D-KH3-MOM

"Blank Points" shows that he didn't die in the explosion that clearly killed him in KH2. It just somehow warped him to the Realm of Darkness...which is treated as the Realm of Nothingness he was banished to before even when those are different things...and he now has a black coat for some reason....and he reveals to Aqua that he put data inside of Sora that can help him heal everyone even though that makes no sense for him to have done so....and he speaks of Sora at length as if they were personally acquainted even when they never spoke to each other once....and gaaaaah, it's so stupid! If he had just remained dead, he'd have stayed a strong character and Christopher Lee's passing wouldn't have affected anything (nor would Genzo Wakayama's should the series continue with the character).

Ansem: KH-COM-KH2-Days-Coded-3D-KH3-MOM

So, let me get this straight...Ansem regained all his Master Xehanort memories (which should include that Kingdom Hearts is light, so what the fuck?) and discarded his body to travel back in time despite writing that he was doing it for the sake of knowledge. He travels back to Young Xehanort on Destiny Islands and gives him the power to travel into the future, then just stays hidden on Destiny Islands for years until it's destroyed in KH, where he also afflicts a time-traveling future Sora with some kind of curse because it was "etched" that he do so. Then later after possessing Riku and going through the Final Keyhole, Young Xehanort shows up, extracts his heart and takes it into the future where it's put into a replica body, and from this body Ansem time travels into the future so that he can attend the gathering of the "true" Organization XIII. Then after returning to the replica body, KH3 happens and he's defeated and thus returns with no memories of the future to beyond the Final Keyhole to be defeated again, still somehow not knowing that Kingdom Hearts is light....and GAAAAAAH, it's so FUCKING stupid!!! Ansem was such a great villain the way he was, why ruin that!?

Xemnas: KH-COM-KH2-Days-3D-KH3-MOM

3D strikes again in ruining an awesome villain in service of a lamer one, this time saying that Xemnas wasn't trying to claim a heart for himself and power over all hearts by becoming the supreme existence; he and the other Nobodies had hearts all along and he just lied to the others that they didn't so that they would feel empty enough to be filled with copypastas of Master Xehanort's heart when they completed Kingdom Hearts. No more tragedy and depth; Xemnas is just a bad guy working on behalf of a worse guy just like Ansem. KH3 did an admirable salvage job by suggesting that Xemnas hated being a disposable pawn to someone else and had deep self-worth issues because of it and as a result was honestly trying to become the supreme existence through harnessing the Keyblade's power (unlike Ansem, whose betrayal plan was just about surviving Master Xehanort's reset of the universe alongside a girl he supposedly cared for in his own way), but it's still not as compelling as when him being a Nobody truly meant something and when he wasn't anyone's minion.

Xigbar / Braig: COM-KH2-Days-BBS-Coded-3D-KH3

"I'm already half-Xehanort! Except as if, I'm actually Luxu! I'm also Brain and Bragi in a certain way, both names which coincidentally sound like Braig! What's in the box, you ask? Wouldn't you like to know!" Sigh....a once interesting character, now just an irritating one.

Xaldin / Dilan: COM-KH2-Days-BBS-Coded-3D-KH3

Lexaeus / Elaeus: COM-KH2-Days-BBS-Coded-3D-KH3

In the newly added ending to Coded's cutscene movie version, we see Dilan and Eleaus sprawled out on the floor. They might has well have stayed that way, for what little they say and do afterward. In hindsight, it's honestly sort of a miracle Eleaus had some lines in 3D!

Vexen / Even: COM-KH2-Days-BBS-Coded-3D-KH3-MOM

Zexion / Ienzo: COM-KH2-Days-BBS-Coded-3D-KH3-MOM

I'm impressed that these two hung on for as long as they did! I guess only being major villains in COM, a game early into the series' run, before their major supporting hero role in KH3 helped with that, since their brief appearances in between never did enough to tarnish them. But unfortunately, their roles in KH3 were also very conclusive ones, so seeing them again, alongside their should-be-dead master, in MOM immediately afterwards sours me on them.

Saix / Isa: COM-KH2-Days-BBS-Coded-3D-KH3

Axel / Lea: COM-KH2-Days-BBS-Coded-3D-KH3

The decision to put young Isa and Lea in Radiant Garden in BBS in place of young Squall and Cloud was a horrible one which somewhat negatively impacted Saix and Axel in Days and absolutely negatively impacted them in all other games. For reference, in Days it is subtly implied Saix and Axel are in the Organization for the sake of a girl they knew in Radiant Garden (a vague idea that would later be fleshed out into something worse, like with Xion), which lessens both of them. Worse still is the bullshit redemptions they go through once restored from their KH2 deaths, which is especially bad for Axel. As Lea, everything that made Axel a great character is thrown into the garbage, turning him into an unfunny comic relief who is only part of the main cast and a Keyblade wielder because of his past popularity (something he obnoxiously lampshades in KH3), with his vices either swept under the rug or dishonestly reframed as virtues. It's sad. These two excellent villains make two lousy heroes.

Demyx: COM-KH2-Days-KH3

Luxord: COM-KH2-Days-3D-KH3

Marluxia: COM-KH2-Days-3D-KH3

Larxene: COM-KH2-Days-3D-KH3

Just like with Ventus, Union Xross bullshit popping up in KH3 ruins these characters. They're still entertaining if you just ignore it, but after all is said and done you just know that the series is going to continue on with it and it's not a pleasant prospect at all, especially for Luxord.

Roxas: COM-KH2-Days-BBS-Coded-3D-KH3

Like with Namine, the disappointing depiction of Roxas in Days would not have single-handedly ruined him. It's how it carried over into subsequent games that did the real damage, as for some reason the game and its depiction of Roxas really caught on in Japan and thus there was high fan demand for Roxas' tragedy to be reversed and for he and his friends to have a happy ending. That's why the next few games all included Roxas in his stupid black coat and referenced the pain of losing his stupid friends whom he stupidly eats ice cream with all the damn time, and culminated in his nonsensical resurrection in KH3 that Nomura has personally confessed was done out of fan pandering. Oh, but he wasn't alone on that....

Xion: Days-BBS-Coded-3D-KH3

And we're three-for-three with a character whom was problematic in Days but wouldn't have jumped the shark if that had been it for them; in this case the biggest character in that game. If the series had just stuck to how Xion's fate was described in Days, which was being as dead and gone as is humanly possible to be, then she'd still be looked upon as an effective tragic character. Instead, we just kept on seeing her in game after game against all logic, almost always with some sad look on her face to the point her tragedy became a comedy, culminating in her nonsensical resurrection for fan pandering alongside Roxas in KH3.

Master Xehanort: BBS-3D-KH3-MOM

No further comment. We all know this one.

Young Xehanort: BBS-Coded-3D-KH3

Yes, this character actually jumped the shark in his debut. Why? Because he fundamentally made no sense. Not only did him coming from Destiny Islands and wanting more than just his small world lazily rehash Riku from the original KH which in turn negatively affects both Terra and Riku's characters, but he also makes both Master Xehanort and Terra-Xehanort feel superfluous. Why not just have this character be the villain who ends up with amnesia and becomes Ansem's apprentice? Why have him at all if you're just going to age him up only to possess a younger character's body? And if you're going to do that, then why still include this character in the plot as a time-traveling minion of his older self!? And if you're going to do that, then why then give us an even younger version who got off Destiny Islands earlier only to pointlessly return and completely retcon all the other Xehanorts' fundamental motivations!?

Terra-Xehanort: KH2-BBS-3D-0.2-KH3-MOM

Same deal as with Terra and Ansem. 3D turned Terra-Xehanort into just an accessory; a minion to Master Xehanort even though that defeats the whole purpose of his existence.

Vanitas: BBS-3D-KH3

Vanitas came SO CLOSE to never jumping the shark. But then Re:Mind just had to throw in a new scene where he references the Union Xross bullshit retcon of him being an "ancient being of darkness" who wasn't born from Ventus' heart at all! Thanks, Nomura, I hate it.

Riku Replica / Dark Riku: COM-3D-KH3

Riku Replica was good as just a character in COM. The idea 3D foreshadowed of an evil version of him being a part of the "true" Organization XIII made a lot of sense, and I would have been fine with it. But KH3 wrecked it by also including the original version of the Riku Replica, even though he, much like DiZ and Xion, should have been irrevocably dead. And it was for no other purpose but a deus ex machina to grant Namine a body she didn't need! His evil counterpart on Xehanort's side ending up being a bland let-down didn't help matters.

Master Eraqus: BBS-KH3

Young Eraqus has way too big of a disconnect from Master Eraqus. How am I supposed to believe that this upbeat kid who is also a clever chessmaster (supposedly clever; he really just cheats) is the same person as the stern zealot whose idiotic blunders did much of the heavy lifting for Master Xehanort's evil plan in BBS? And how am I supposed to believe he and Xehanort had this super close bond when Xehanort so casually murdered him in BBS?

Hayner, Pence and Olette: COM-KH2-Days-KH3

.......................Never. They never jumped the shark at all. Who would have ever guessed: out of all characters in the series, it's these three mundane civilians who stayed consistent!

**ELEMENTAL SPOILERS AHEAD**

Okay so, I was reminded of this (thanks random clips on Youtube), and since I never made a post sharing my thoughts on ‘Elemental’ despite seeing it a week ago, I wanna give my thoughts on this particular moment now and see if anyone agrees/disagrees with me, cause I’m curious.

Alright, in the typical 2nd act Break-up Scene, I understand that Wade was looking out for Ember's happiness, but he basically called her a coward and for me, that crossed the line. It may have been done with good intentions, but it was also ignorant and arrogant.

The movie makes it very clear that it's not a matter of Ember simply following her father's wishes like it is in something like ‘Turning Red’ - it's Ember wanting to make sure her dad can retire so he doesn't WORK HIMSELF TO DEATH. I can't blame her for being hesitant about revealing the truth to him. Yes, that may count as her being ‘afraid’ as Wade says, but it’s a damn reasonable fear to have! Also, I’d like to point out that if she had taken over the shop, she still could have made her glasswork art on the side, so it's not like she would be completely giving up on her dream.

I get that yes, the truth ultimately was the right decision in this case - Bernie assumed Ember wanted the shop since that's what she always said/implied since she was a kid, and once he learned that she didn't want it, people in the community were able to take over the shop for Bernie so he could retire.

Essentially, everything worked out... but it was very much an idealized best case scenario/Hollywood happy ending, so Ember was still valid in thinking that her rejecting the shop and being selfish would inadvertently lead to her father's death/them eventually losing the shop again. I could also see Ember being reluctant about leaving in general since, again, outside of the shitty customers she seemed to enjoy being at the center of the community and being an assistant manager/delivery girl. It was just being in charge of EVERYTHING and all the stress that came from it that made it a nightmare.

But in THAT regard it’s like - geez, Wade, if you're that concerned about Ember getting burnt out (ha) and being miserable, maybe YOU should offer to help run the shop with her so she doesn't get overwhelmed by awful customers (which seemed to be her main issue, given that she enjoyed the shop itself). At the very least, he should have tried to help her find some sort of compromise instead of only pushing her towards the 'tell the truth and follow your dreams' path - a path that, as Ember said, not everyone is privileged or lucky enough to follow, while Wade seems to think it’s the only valid path.

I feel like Wade being willing to not just help her find happiness but also understand her duty and loyalty to her family would have been the TRUE sign that he was a good match for her. Instead it just feels like an ignorant person seeing the dynamics in a family from a different culture and calling that family 'abusive' because they don't understand said culture differences.

Given that I enjoyed the cultural and familial aspects of ‘Elemental’ much more than the romance plot, I feel like it could have been nice to have Wade - instead of declaring his love and following the rom-com tropes to a tee - find a way to be an actual supportive ally and have THAT be the true foundation of their love instead of it JUST being their ‘chemistry’ with each other.

Instead of him deciding to take a one-way ticket out of the city and being all sad, have him discover the cracks in Ember’s glass at the dam and have him still be there later on trying to still fix it for her when she comes across it herself. Show Wade actively caring about the fate of not just Ember but also all of Fire Town, fighting for their safety and wanting them all to be okay even after Ember rejects him. I feel like seeing that, plus him helping her save the blue flame, would truly allow Ember to return Wade’s feelings, as it would help her see that even if he doesn’t fully understand it, he still sees and accepts that Ember’s people and community are important to her, so he wants to help support and protect them too regardless of whether or not it earns him a date/relationship afterwards.

There was a lot of other things that could have been added in to further support this new climax - like, instead of Wade just introducing Ember to the wonders of Element City, Ember could be sharing Fire Land culture with him as well. I also feel like Wade needed to be more of a character in his own right and less of an overly-emotional manic pixie dream boy, as otherwise he just comes off as Jack from ‘Titanic’, complete with heroic sacrifice for his love interest. Except here it’s less ‘quirky guy wanting to save a rich girl from her abusive fam’ and more ‘quirky guy wants to date a girl he fell head-over-heels with and is putting her happiness above all else... buuut that unfortunately also includes putting it above the people his love interest cares about the most’, so it’s less charming.

The fact that we barely get to learn anything about Wade’s backstory with his dead dad combined with his only real goal in the film being ‘help Ember/date Ember/save Ember, etc.’, it just makes him feel sorta shallow and a bit of an after-thought compared to Ember and the rest of the Lumen family. At best, he’s an overly emotional romantic who just cares a lot (which can be a positive or negative thing depending on the circumstances) and at worst he’s an ignorant optimist whose empathy only somewhat works on an individual level (like with Ember, or with that one airball athlete he got the arena to cheer for). Either way, I feel like Wade is the main reason why I couldn’t fully get behind the romance in the end, no matter how sweet or cute some of the earlier moments of it might have been.

"I do not need this shit right now!" Riri snatched papers from the board. "I swear to God, I was doing so well! Goin' to class on time! I must be dumb as hell— real dumb to think the princess of Wakanda and a young Avenger gonna show up at my doorstep and then shit about to pop off!"

Cat looked at her freaking out remembering how Peter had reacted when Tony had gone to his apartment to recruit him. It was a different world then, smaller.

"I think that I'm actually gonna take my chances with this merman— because at least he never brought the FBI to my garage!"

"I like her," Cat sentenced.

"Hey! Namor sank an entire ship of CIA operatives because of your little machine," Okoye informed her. "So those popo out there, are the very least of your worries."

"Oh, man," Cat muttered. "Is it wrong that I kinda like that Namor guy too?"

"Remember who's making your suit, Copy," Shuri warned her, then spoke to Riri. "Listen, we need to work together to get out of here. General, they've got us surrounded, maybe we should just split up?"

Okoye laughed. "Out of the question. Does this vehicle work?"

Riri made a face. "No."

"She's lying."

"Hey!"

"I'm sorry, you're not the one that's paying me," Cat shrugged.

"Everything in this lab works," Shuri pointed at the next option. "Including this bike."

"Don't even think about it," Okoye warned her. "Besides, there are four of us."

"Three of y'all. I'm takin' this."

Cat looked up and she felt a strange mix of emotions at the sight.

"You built one..." she said in awe.

"Whoo! I knew it! Don't tell me that you built this in two months!"

Riri chuckled. "I spent years on this. On and off... you okay?"

The mutant blinked back the tears. "Yeah! Jeez, I don't know... sorry, give me a minute..."

"Man, is it that bad?" Riri said worryingly.

"No," Cat turned back to her. "No, I just... Tony... it's a good-looking suit."

"You met Tony Stark?"

"He raised her," Shuri said. "All the Avengers did. Excuse her if she gets emotional. Have you flown it yet?"

"That thing can fly?" Okoye asked skeptically.

"There's an entire youtube channel dedicated to sightings of me."

"Spider-man and I had one of those when we first started."

"Didn't Spider-man come way before you did?"

"Riri, don't get on my bad side."

The lights went off abruptly. Cat activated M.O.U.S.E.

"Come!" Shuri handed the young girl a com, and Cat linked hers to their signal. "So we can communicate—"

"Don't try to scurry off—"

Cat nudged Riri forward. "You better soldier on, kid."

"You sure you good with what you got?" The girl asked her.

"Those are just men," Cat drew out her claws. "I won't even need my knife."

"The tactical unit will breach the entrance in three, two..."

"It's so nice to be back!" Cat whispered giddily.

"One."

The doors burst open.

"FBI DON'T MOVE!"

Cat teleported out of sight and reappeared behind one of the agents. She heard Riri igniting her repulsors. "Stay where you are!" Copycat pushed the man toward Riri's line of vision and the girl shot with no hesitation.

"Go little girl!" The mutant cheered. Cat disarmed the next guy kicking him in the face. Shuri got out of the car and activated her A.I., which drove Okoye out of the workshop while the woman shouted at her to get her out. "You'll be in trouble for that!" Cat teased her.

"Shut up and hop in!" Shuri shouted.

"Yes, your highness!"

Cat elbowed a guy and stole his gun, then kicked him on the crotch and shot him four times, though she pointed at his bulletproof vest. Another person attacked her but Cat seized them by the jacket and lifted them in the air, tossing them to the other side and knocking down two other agents in the process.

"Cat, stop playing we need to go!"

Copycat teleported one more time and landed on the back of the bike, she wrapped her arms around Shuri. "Can I drive?"

"If you find a way to switch seats in the middle of a car chase!"

Cat laughed. "It's like you don't know me."

"Griot! Give me a visual!" Shuri used a small elevation on the road to gain speed and caused two police cars to crash.

"That was amazing!" She exclaimed.

"Next one's all for you," Shuri replied.

"I'm calling dibs on the armored car," she joked.

"Okoye we're on our way to you!" The princess announced.

"Who's with you?"

"The Heathen!" Cat said happily. "We're having fun!"

"That is not a good thing!"

"Police car ahead!" Copycat announced. Shuri had to drift to avoid crashing against the car, and as she did, Cat jumped and teleported, landing on the vehicle's roof. "Go ahead!"

Shuri drove away from the scene, Cat stabbed the roof of the car with her claws, and with her free hand, she copied Wanda's powers and ripped the hood of the vehicle leaving it bare and at her mercy.

"Now, I'm no mechanic," with the scarlet mist, she seized the car's battery and pulled it out at once. "But I think this will do!"

The car came to a halt, Cat teleported and landed in front of Shuri.

"Holy shit!" The girl twisted the hand grip.

"Scoot over!" The mutant demanded.

"That's cheating!" Shuri let go and wrapped her hands around Cat's waist.

"I never play fair!" She replied. "I'm a better driver than you anyway!"

"You don't even have a license!"

"Irrelevant!" A car caught up with them and Cat smiled at the driver. "Hi, Okoye!"

"I don't understand why this country lets you walk around freely."

"I'm just really good at escaping prison!"

"We need to find an extraction point," the woman reminded them.

"There's one across the river," Shuri let them know.

"Hey, yo'— they're cutting off the bridge!" Riri said through the coms.

"I can't teleport you two at the same time," Cat informed them. "What now?"

"Princess, there is a surveillance drone locked onto you."

"How high?"

"Thirty thousand feet."

"I'm not sure I can go that high," Cat said worryingly. "I never teleport in that direction."

"Hang on," Riri said. "I got it..."

The girl went up without waiting for a reply, and Cat's hands started to sweat. "You got this, kid!" She told her. "Be fast!"

Riri took down the drone, but she was now falling aimlessly. Cat tense, preparing for teleporting to aid her at any moment. "Shuri?" She said.

"Wait," the princess replied. "Riri, are you okay?"

Silence.

"Riri!" Both young women shouted.

"Yeah," she breathed heavily, her suit turned on again. "I'm good!"

Cat shouted a couple of swear words but she was in the best of moods. "Good job, kid!" Ahead there were several police cars, Cat prepared to leave her spot again. "These will take a while," she mumbled.

"No worries," Riri told her, "I got a special delivery for y'all in three, two, one!" The drone landed directly on top of the police cars, clearing out the way. "You'll recruit me now?" The girl said humorously.

"Riri, if I ever make a team of super teens, you'll be the first I'll call!" Cat laughed.

"Nice one Riri!" Shuri exclaimed.

Cat drove faster across the bridge, Riri flew ahead of them but then she came to a sudden halt. At first, Cat thought her suit had malfunctioned, but then she heard something rolling down Okoye's car.

"Shit!"

A water bomb lifted the two transportations from the ground, Cat was quick to turn in the air and seize Shuri, she used Wanda's powers to shield the both of them and landed on the ground roughly. She left the princess there and ripped out the door of Okoye's car, Cat carried her out of her seat, also teleporting her to where Shuri was.

"Stay here," she said to Okoye, Shuri seemed to be a little stunned. "I'm checking on Riri—" The girl's body started to get dragged across the pavement, something was pulling her towards the water with a rope. "Hey!" Copycat set her free with her claws, she turned the girl around and examined her face. "Mouse, vitals?"

"Stable. She passed out."

"What the hell was that?" Cat looked over the edge of the bridge, but she couldn't see anything.

"That must be the merman," Okoye said grimly.

This is fucking sad, man. I think a lot of Liams problems come from his childhood, situations, of course, involving his father. He was left at home a lot, which might be where the attachment issues come from.

I thinks he has a lot of undiagnosed issues, mentally. Mainly ADHD and Autism. I have Autism myself and I can relate to Liam a lot. I think he suffers socially and I can tell in a lot of his interviews he really struggles to keep up with the small talk and give long answers that sound smart. I believe Noel preyed on this and he would make fun of Liam not being smart or articulate enough.

* Some evidence of this can be seen in the book Paul Gallagher wrote in the 90s. Peggy tells the story of many children with a Neurodivergent child, Liam was very "naughty", "got up to trouble", "trouble focusing", "anger issues", etc. Liam was meant to be sent to a "special school" where he could do "more outside activities". Everyone, including, the school noticed Liams difference.

Sadly, everyone jumped on the bandwagon and now when everyone he says something he's taken the piss out of. If he's serious, he's laughed at. Etc etc.

Where Liam is more open with emotions and seems to have no control over them, Noel is definitely more subtle and with that bond as brothers knows where to hit Liam where it hurts.

Liam lashes out in his tweets, which, in retrospect, is a lot more healthy than dishing it out at their front door.

And don't get me started on Noel's victim complex — Apparently both Noel's children at targets of Liams rampent online "abuse". In fact, it appears Liam only ever mentioned Anais. He called her "fucking kid". Sara went out and showed her true colours, saying she hoped Liam would "drop dead" before her kids were old enough to use social media. With Liams many health issues, this obviously hurt Peggy. Liam saying "fucking kid" isn't really surprising. Liam uses swearing in his everyday vocab.

It all comes down to this; Liam adores Noel. Noel doesn't adore Liam the same amount. Liam wants Noels love and attention. Noel doesnt give it to him. Liam looked up to Noel. Noel looked down on Liam.

Noel was able to control Liam with Liams fear of him leaving the band, which was completely unfounded until the 2000s. Liams attatchment issues. Ughfhghthfjss.

Asahi: taking a whole bunch of those ‘what your fashion says about you’ quizzes until he eventually made one himself as well as a polyvore account

Oikawa: reading and writing doctor who fanfiction before eventually getting into sherlock and supernatural. yes, he shipped destiel. yes, the destiel canon thing on november ruined him

Iwaizumi: he was really into looking up random animal videos like ‘tarantula vs. scorpion fight’ and stuff like monster bug wars from animal planet and when oikawa made fun of his search history he figured out how to delete it

Hanamaki: vibing to the Phineas and Ferb songs playlist that he made on youtube (of course the aglet song is his favorite one)

Matsukawa: a true tumblr child and was there when this hellsite was first birthed. he remembers the tumblr wars between the fandom and the hipster blogs all too well

Ushijima: didn’t know what the internet was until tendou realized he didn’t have a skype so he made an account for him. until now, ushijima’s status still says ‘hi, wakatoshi here’

Tendou: watching a whole bunch of minecraft song parodies on youtube before eventually making them himself

Semi: either learning guitar through youtube videos or looking up ‘how to play lucky by jason mraz EASY VERSION | NO BAR CHORDS’

Shirabu: he used only Google+ as his social media and wondered why he wasn’t getting any friends

Goshiki: this kid was blessed to be twelve years old when the lego movie came out so he most definitely just used the internet to listen to ‘everything is awesome’ again and again

Kuroo: definitely a fandom kid, one of those from the six major book fandoms (hp, pjo, hg). used to run a fricking roleplay group on tumblr and his oc’s always have a Dark Backstory

Kenma: youguysaregonnacomeformebut--- SONIC THE HEDGEHOG FANFICTION OKAY BYE

Yaku: playing Pet Society on facebook. is it such a coincidence to see him so decked out and rich now when his pet had the same lifestyle? nO

Lev: playing those papa louie games (papa’s pizzeria, papa’s burgeria, etc) and trying to force the game to crash by serving customers 500 chicken wings

Bokuto: as soon as he got a skype account, he’d pretty much voice call anyone and everyone he saw had an ‘active’ status on but his friends didn’t have the heart to switch their status to ‘inactive’

Akaashi: was the king of making ‘which ___ character would be into you (for girls and gays only!!!)’ quizzes that are very detailed. he’d even make a whole character profile with a ‘how you met them’ at the end

Atsumu: used to secretly watch episodes of ‘boys over flowers’ and ‘meteor garden’ on the computer when he was alone at home. eventually got into girl’s generation and super junior

Osamu: a master at playing poptropica and even had a whole gig making poptropica walkthroughs for other people. sometimes he’d play club penguin and get himself kicked out for swearing just for fun

Suna: looking up ‘demons by imagine dragons with lyrics’ on youtube and just playing it on loop. his desktop wallpaper says ‘don’t get too close, it’s dark inside’

Kita: didn’t know what the internet was until suna and aran took pity on him and helped him create a facebook account. until now, his profile pic is still a picture of his jersey number and he has 99+ unchecked notifications

Sakusa: his cousin introduced him to sims. except, sakusa doesn’t play ‘for fun’ but to vicariously live the average salaryman life through his virtual character (he named him steve)

Hiya ^__^! I was in the middle of writing a thirst/emo ask when I saw your "medias/entertainment the LIs would be interested in." post, and I have some HCs & thoughts about Robin, Kylar & Eden:

Robin- They like MMO games, but since they financially can't afford subscription games, they stick to free MMOs like Neverwinter, Guild Wars 2, Old School Runescape (even though you have to pay to access the game's best content, lol, but w/e), etc. They enjoy listening to light-hearted podcasts where participants are chatting about the mundane. On youtube, they mostly follow cooking channels to find simple, affordable recipes to try out & share w/ PC. When it comes to social media, they're more of a lucker than an active user. I also kinda see them having a hard time grasping internet culture/memes. Uses let's-play videos as background noise when they're studying.

Kylar- they like movies such as Eyes Without a Face, Don't Look Now, Rosemary's Baby, V/H/S anthology, From Beyond, etc. Watches true-crimes docs & series. When it comes to video games, they're very big on any game that requires a shit-ton of reading, so their fav genres are mostly VNs, dating sims & text-based games. Sometimes they like to mess around w/ dungeon crawlers & FPS games. They listen to popular gothic rock bands like The Cure, Joy Division, Bauhaus, Siouxsie and the Banshees, etc. Def a veteran mod in some obscure anime forum. Their internet persona is diametrically opposite to their IRL personality. Has a blog where they journal their daily life & dump their writing & drawings. Literally pirates anything they could get their hand on. Occasionally surfs & posts in /lit/, /adv/, /x/, /ic/, and /r9k/.

Eden- If they ever used the internet, it's just to pirate books, read news & op-ed articles; they wouldn't care about anything else. Has a great collection of books that centres around political & economic theories. I don't think they have a specific favourite music artist, but when they were young, they might have listened to Alice in Chains, Rage Against the Machine, The Smashing Pumpkins, System of a Down, Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds, etc. Because of K*rk*t, now I'm legally obligated to assign any remotely grumpy character as a rom-com enjoyer whether it fits or not :v, so yeah, Eden's guilty pleasure is shitty rom-com movies, w/ The Notebook being one of their favorites. (But they're def not ashamed of reading & enjoying romance novels.)

I agree with a lot of this, anon.

Robin falls for Joe mama-style set ups everytime. Probably has played every Final Fantasy and has a few ideas for a TTRPG character they want to play as but never found a group to play with. Also, when it comes to YouTube Robin strikes me as someone who would have enjoyed Jenna Marbles (I miss her so bad).

Kylar seems like the type of person to have one of those Yandere blogs you see. Updates it with every look you give them, posts pictures of their shrine in their room (with you censored, they don't want anyone getting any ideas) and talks about how they can't wait for your future together. I also think Kylar is emo as hell and may have been a scene kid at one point - yes even listening to absolute trash like Simon Curtis. Which brings up a theory of mine - Kylar dyes their hair black. It's naturally something else. They could also enjoy films like The Boy, and openly roots for Brahms.

Eden strikes me as someone potentially leaning anarchist politically. Probably has Peter Kropotkin and such in their book stack. But also could lean into conspiracy theories a bit too much. It may just be because of the town, but Eden has a line where they say they'll never go to the hospital - if they're that injured then they'll die. And I don't blame them, knowing Harper, but it does make me think Eden could be an illuminati/lizard person believer. If Eden ever had electricity put in at the cabin I would bet they'd like How I Met Your Mother and other rom-com shows. Doesn't even flinch when you watch Bambi together and it reaches that scene, which is a little concerning.

sure do!

dot gets a “world’s best dad” mug as a joke gift from the gang on her birthday and she immediately gets into dad jokes. one of her fave is pronouncing kind like the kind in “goodkind” whenever she’s talking to Shelby, and to sneak it into the conversation as much as possible. it is quite literally sooooooo dumb.

Dot: it takes all kinds, thank you kindly, that is so kind of you, ect.

Shelby: get a hobby

Nora doesn’t stop counting days. she keeps track of them in a notebook and has a “days since the island” count that the girl’s periodically ask her about. but she also has a “days since I’ve last been kissed” and a “days since leah got out of rehab” and a “days since toni’s mom last used” and a “days since fatin played the cello” and a “days since Dot had a panic attack” and a “days since Rachel had a bad food day” and too many others to name. most of the ones the girls know about but sometimes in conversation they’ll offhandedly mention something and Nora will input a highly specific number that makes everyone realize how tight she’s keeping track of things

Rachel has perfect pitch. she doesn’t realize she does, doesn’t really care that she does, but Fatin finds out and starts demanding she help with the cello which is when they learn Rachel can sing. like, sing intensely amazingly. she doesn’t really care enough to pursue a music career but sometimes she’ll post a jam session with shelby or something on insta, and get tons of support. there’s a running gag that they should release an ep and while everyone in the eight is very musical and artistic, it’s all in entirely different ways. Fatin really is classically trained, Shelby is partial to country, Toni loves rap while Dot loves heavy metal. Martha and Rachel both love pop but have wildly different opinions regarding it and Nora listens to a ton of indie by artists no one has heard of before. once they tried to put a song together just for shits and giggles and it entirely collapsed within five minutes

Shelby and Toni don’t want to settle down and they don’t want to conform to capitalism and while the island sucked in every way it sucked they also don’t want to live as separated from nature as Shelby was forced to for most of her life. they end up buying a van and living out of their car, just driving around Texas. they visit the girls a lot, but they enjoy the freedom of not having to go anywhere or do anything but having the only responsibility be to themselves. Toni gets pretty into nature photography, which brings in some income, and Shelby starts learning other instruments just for fun: guitar, flute, violin, sort of whatever she happens to run into. she asks Fatin to teach her the cello and gets a flat and very understandable “no way in hell i’d rather get trapped on an island again�� in response

Martha starts a little animal rescue and falls in love with the the boy who runs the cafe across the street and it’s like a gross rom com. he’s stupid, though not a himbo bc he’s kinda mean at first, more of a womanizer than anything. it’s this frustrating enemies to lovers where Martha cannot stand him and his perfect abs and his passion for cooking and his attention to detail. whenever there’s a new development the entire gang has to hear about it individually on a phone call from her. his meanness comes from a place of insecurity, pushing her away so that he never has to put himself out there bc he doesn’t think he’s good enough bc he’s mean bc the insecurity (vicious cycle, you get it), and once he’s kinda forced to bc c’mon, it’s Martha, if any of us met her we’d all instantly fall in love, he transforms into a himbo, stupid pretty and also stupid. they adopt four dogs, six cats, three guinea pigs, a chinchilla, two hamsters, an aquarium filled with fish, five birds, and so on and so on. once Martha asked Toni to pet sit and Toni faked her death for seven weeks. they also end up having like a stupid amount of kids. like so many kids. it’s a zoo it really is. and they still have that animal rescue and cafe right across from one another. sometimes they’ll send their employees to pass notes to each other and when Rachel found out she stopped talking to Martha for nine days bc it was soooo gross.

Fatin’s approach to life is very very strange. she makes a decision and she goes for it. like once she decided she was gonna summit Mount Kilimanjaro, and she trained for it and did it and then was like “okay great never climbing a mountain again, i no longer care.” she got elected to congress and she stayed there for a single term, she got a doctorate in musical theory then gave up music, got a million subscribers on youtube then gave up social media, just running through things like she’s running through a bucket list. she learned to speak five languages, (one of those martha’s language, can’t remember the name of it, typing too quick to look it up) then stopped. successfully campaigned for an area to be named a natural park so it would stay protected and gave up activism. like, she just runs around on side quests doing shit. she got her boating license, her pilots license, a real estate license, a license to practice law, and a license to kill. sometimes one of the girls would come with her on her grand crusade (Dot climbed the mountain with her, Toni and Shelby learned the language with her, Rachel helped her in her music classes, Leah helped with the activism) but like sometimes she’d just be doing stuff on her own. and she was learning to be okay with that.

Leah starts collecting really old books. and it’s not really a big deal at first it’s just her at a garage sale or a used book store picking up a title that feels nice against her fingers or that she recognizes the author of, until suddenly it is a big deal. until she has people calling her asking her to pick up a box or else they’ll get thrown away. entirely on accident she becomes well versed in book preservation and restoration, building a library and releasing it to the public, keeping copies of books that went out of print ages ago with signatures by authors who’s hands have rotted away in their graves. it’s a lot of little work, a lot of careful focused work so her brain can’t run away from her, and a lot of isolated work too. some days she wakes up and realizes she hasn’t talked to the other girls for weeks and it’s tangible, the missing them. the books stack up higher and higher in her shelves. when she’s dead and gone someone will write a biography describing all of the incredible work she did for the preservation of history and writing. the island will be a footnote.
