To Be The Master of the Key-An Analysis of Kingdom Hearts 3
Something very interesting happens at the beginning of Kingdom Hearts 3. After finishing the first world of the game, Mount Olympus, the game switches from Sora’s perspective to Riku’s in the Realm of Darkness. Here the player gets to play as Riku fighting against a heartless more powerful than any Sora has faced so far, The Demon Tower. A hideous cluster of Shadows in the shape of a tower that mindlessly devores anything that moves. This is no mere heartless, this is a demon straight from Hell. And yet Riku is on par with this living nightmare. By playing as Riku against the Demon Tower the Player is given something very special, they are able to experience with their own hand the power of Keyblade Master. Riku is far more powerful than Sora at the beginning of the game. Not only posing a higher level than Sora Riku has a full combo with multiple finishers, a 360 barrier style guard with a with a reprisal attacks, the highest level of magic spells, access to Grand Magic Za spells, a complete set of movement abilities, and a team attack with Micky that can be activated through the situation command meter. Everything Sora can do Riku does better and by making the player play as Riku they are able to not only experience that truth but experience first hand what Sora can become.
Though interesting enough, while Riku defeats the Demon Tower he not only fails in his main objective of saving Aqua but his own Keyblade is broken. Riku’s title and power as a Master wasn’t enough to get the job done. And it’s not as if Riku himself is lacking after all, even the player could feel just how much stronger Riku is than Sora. No, the point of Riku’s failing is to show the player that power is not enough to save the guardians of light and end this conflict. That it has to be someone like Sora, someone who defies all the traditions of what it means to be a keyblade wielder, to save the day
Later again After Sora has finished his final disney world, the game switches back to playing as Riku one last time, facing off against the combined forces of the Demon Tower and Anti-Aqua. But this time things feel different. Riku plays almost exactly the same as he did before, with the only thing missing being his team attack with Mickey, and yet he does not feel nearly as powerful as he did the first time. He feels almost restrictive. And that is because The Player has spent the last several hours playing as Sora, experiencing his ever growing abilities with their own two hands. From Flowmotion to Formchage to Shotlocks Sora has acquired one of the most varied and expansive move sets in the whole series. So going back to Riku feels almost like the player is being held back. And then the game switches back to Sora, confirming what the player already knows, That Sora has not just reached Riku’s level but surpassed him and the standard set for Keyblade Masters. In the boss fight against Anti-Aqua Sora feels so much freer than Riku. Not just using Formchange in a way unlike any other Keyblade Master but showing brand new abilities never seen before like Air Step, or even creating his own miracles through the Links and Attraction Flow. And it is thanks exactly to that one of kind power of miracles that Sora is able to Save Aqua and bring her back to the realm of light
The playable Riku sections in Kingdom Hearts 3 are a brilliant choice in gameplay design as they not only give the Player a first hand experience of what Sora will become by the end of the game but shows them how Sora can go even further beyond.

Maybe it’s cause I listen to a lot of apocalyptica. Maybe I should blame DDD, but I have this headcanon that Riku plays the Cello…
Don’t ask me give you evidence as to why.
I just, I dunno, I have this image of post CoM/ pre KH2 Riku relearning how to play an instrument he’s played since he was six whilst he’s wearing his blindfold. Just him, in the middle of a big empty room in the twilight town mansion, feeling out the notes and relying only on his ears and fingers to guide his muscles.
Perhaps he’d do it in the quiet moments when he has nothing to do but wait for DiZ to make some headway. Maybe Naminé sneaks into the room to watch him play, and he knows she’s there but he lets it be.
Maybe, after a while it’s his go to therapy when he feels like he’s going to scream or crawl out of his skin.
It’s something Ansem/Zehanort couldn’t do. Something that tied him to who he was. And in a way it became his focus.
Maybe Riku falls back on it while he’s searching for Sora after KH3. He’s so lost and worried and angry that he feels out of control, so he reaches for the blindfold -the one he shoved to the back of his draws and swore he’d never wear again- and wraps it around his eyes.
When he sits down to play, its like sinking into painless sleep after hours of agony. Just the low vibrations of the strings, as he plays out how he feels.
What comes out of the instrument is dark and a little bit broody, and afterwards he feels like an idiot for falling back on that melodramatic feeling to help him cope. But in the moment it helps him purge what he’s feeling so that he can continue the fight.
Maybe Kairi hears. Maybe Leon and the rest of the restoration committee hear it too.
Maybe it reverberates around the castle when he plays and let’s them all know that he needs support.
I dunno man, it’s such a melodramatic headcanon. It’s so emo, that I hate it, but also love it.
I just like the idea of it.

Thinking Of The Past -Riku-
masterlist | request | part 1
Prompt: Can you write a part two to “Taking you home (Riku)”?
Pairing: Riku / Reader
Summary:
Word Count: 642
Warnings: Mention/Talk of character death (MC)
A/N: I planed on writing a full part of Riku talking to reader and everything but it was already getting long on its own and i wanted to go ahead and post this. But after I’m done with requests I’ll write a part 3 for this if y’all want that!
Tumblr media
As the portal closed before him, Riku feel to his knees.
For so long as he wanted to see you again. Hear your laugh, see your smile and feel your radiant energy and warming energy once more.
Yet the only think he felt from your shell was cold and hostility. Your once welcoming self was threatening him alongside someone you both used to consider an enemy.
Slowly Riku rose from the ground. His keyblade de-materialized from his hand as his eyes gaze to where your nobody previously stood.
He could still visualize how your lips turned upward to a smile as he winced in pain from Roxas’ hit. Before the master could dwell on the event anymore, he stood up and turned to make his way back toward his gummiship.
Once Riku’s ship appeared within the Destiny Island sky, The pilot began to feel dread swell up within him. How exactly was he planning to tell them that not only did he fail in mission, but he left you slip away once again?
As the thrusters died down and the ship came to a shop Riku closed his eyes. He thought back to when he’d see your smiling face daily, hear your laugh constantly, and feeling your warm embrace whenever needed.
His reminiscence was disrupted by the once distance sound of his name being screamed. When his green eyes opened, he saw Kairi and Sora running towards him.
The older one took a long deep breath before stepping out of his ship. The other two stopped once they realized he was alone. Before they could ask what happened, Riku spoke. “I couldn’t defeat him. Roxas had a friend.”
Sora and Kairi glanced between each other before running off the list of known organization members. Each name caused Riku to shake his head ‘no’.
Before either could continue, Riku took a deep breath and spoke your name. Kairi and Sora’s eyes widened as their mouths hung open in shock. It felt like years since they last heard you’re name being said.
Silence fell over the group as they processed what Riku just said. They still remembered the day you died. Hearing the news was a gut punch to everyone.
Even back then they felt bad for not trying harder to search for you, proof at least. But now, all the negative emotions are returning - even more this time.
Riku couldn’t help but wonder if that was a major cause of your anger.
♡♡♡♡♡
As Riku sat across from Sora and Kairi, he couldn’t focus on the conversation they were having.
Instead his mind kept wandering back to earlier that week. Back to when he came across your nobody in search of Roxas, when he lost you again and failed his initial mission.
He kept wondering if he was correct. That you’re anger stemmed from the group not searching for you more.
After your disappearance, they searched days and days for you. Traveling to every world they could think off, calling all friends to help. Only for an enemy to tell them of your death.
When Xemnas first informed Sora of your demise, they couldn’t nor wouldn’t believe it. However as their search continued to fall, so did their hope the nobody was lying.
It wasn’t long after that the group stopped looking for you, sadly accepting that you were in fact dead.
Suddenly Riku jumped up from his seated position. Both Sora and Kairi glanced toward the older wielder with wide eyes and a shocked expression.
The master summoned his keyblade and stared at it for a new seconds before speaking
“I’m not going to sit here while they’re out there, especially with the Organization. I’m going to find them.”
As Riku turned toward the door he heard excited noises coming from the two behind him, followed by two sets of footsteps.
