so something that I feel like is often forgotten- even in kingdom hearts itself, when Aqua is pissed at Mickey in kh3 for making her endure 10 years- is that in the Realm of Darkness, the passage of time does not exist normally. I’m not entirely sure what that means, but it must be different from how the flow of most kh worlds work, so it isn’t just going at a different rate from other worlds, it’s something much more fucked up.
my headcanon is that Aqua’s jaunt in the darkness was not actually ten years long, physically. It was probably a pretty short period of time, which is why she didn’t appear to age at all; a short amount of time in the Realm of Darkness, and 10 years in the Realm of… other places. different worlds having different flows kinda breaks this actually, why are all the important kh original worlds passing the time exactly the same? that doesn’t seem right. personally I think Castle Oblivion and Twilight Town are both flowing differently from The World That Never Was but this is not the post for that.
ANYWAY the kicker is that while it might not have been physically a very short period of time, psychologically it was much longer, similar to… hey, The Jaunt by Stephen King. Though instead of being trapped in a blank void with only your own thoughts for a million years as an instant passes outside, the Realm of Darkness is a lot nicer, in a way. Your conscious mind is keeping up with the “physical” time, allowing you to fight and travel and think normally without it feeling like you’re stuck with your thoughts for a bajillion years, but your subconscious mind is absolutely going through it. I think? Ansem started losing his memories because of his big kingdom hearts laser but it’d be fun if it was because his unconscious mind was erasing things with mental time passage.
He (on his FIRST trip to the Realm of Darkness) and Aqua kept thoughts of people they knew in the forefront of their minds so the fucked up time stuff happening in the back wasn’t hitting as hard. But if you're mentally aging rapidly without realizing it you’re gonna get tired… if you’re stewing in hate for so long and that hate is maintained on its own in the back of your head for even longer through time magic you start to lose yourself in it while simultaneously acting remarkably sane… idk if any of this makes any sense at all

To Be The Master of the Key-An Analysis of Kingdom Hearts 3
Something very interesting happens at the beginning of Kingdom Hearts 3. After finishing the first world of the game, Mount Olympus, the game switches from Sora’s perspective to Riku’s in the Realm of Darkness. Here the player gets to play as Riku fighting against a heartless more powerful than any Sora has faced so far, The Demon Tower. A hideous cluster of Shadows in the shape of a tower that mindlessly devores anything that moves. This is no mere heartless, this is a demon straight from Hell. And yet Riku is on par with this living nightmare. By playing as Riku against the Demon Tower the Player is given something very special, they are able to experience with their own hand the power of Keyblade Master. Riku is far more powerful than Sora at the beginning of the game. Not only posing a higher level than Sora Riku has a full combo with multiple finishers, a 360 barrier style guard with a with a reprisal attacks, the highest level of magic spells, access to Grand Magic Za spells, a complete set of movement abilities, and a team attack with Micky that can be activated through the situation command meter. Everything Sora can do Riku does better and by making the player play as Riku they are able to not only experience that truth but experience first hand what Sora can become.
Though interesting enough, while Riku defeats the Demon Tower he not only fails in his main objective of saving Aqua but his own Keyblade is broken. Riku’s title and power as a Master wasn’t enough to get the job done. And it’s not as if Riku himself is lacking after all, even the player could feel just how much stronger Riku is than Sora. No, the point of Riku’s failing is to show the player that power is not enough to save the guardians of light and end this conflict. That it has to be someone like Sora, someone who defies all the traditions of what it means to be a keyblade wielder, to save the day
Later again After Sora has finished his final disney world, the game switches back to playing as Riku one last time, facing off against the combined forces of the Demon Tower and Anti-Aqua. But this time things feel different. Riku plays almost exactly the same as he did before, with the only thing missing being his team attack with Mickey, and yet he does not feel nearly as powerful as he did the first time. He feels almost restrictive. And that is because The Player has spent the last several hours playing as Sora, experiencing his ever growing abilities with their own two hands. From Flowmotion to Formchage to Shotlocks Sora has acquired one of the most varied and expansive move sets in the whole series. So going back to Riku feels almost like the player is being held back. And then the game switches back to Sora, confirming what the player already knows, That Sora has not just reached Riku’s level but surpassed him and the standard set for Keyblade Masters. In the boss fight against Anti-Aqua Sora feels so much freer than Riku. Not just using Formchange in a way unlike any other Keyblade Master but showing brand new abilities never seen before like Air Step, or even creating his own miracles through the Links and Attraction Flow. And it is thanks exactly to that one of kind power of miracles that Sora is able to Save Aqua and bring her back to the realm of light
The playable Riku sections in Kingdom Hearts 3 are a brilliant choice in gameplay design as they not only give the Player a first hand experience of what Sora will become by the end of the game but shows them how Sora can go even further beyond.

Devoured World Idea.
i kinda wished that during Aqua's journey through the Realm of Darkness, we could have seen more of the worlds that fell to the darkness thanks to the Heartless, like Beast's Castle, Prankster's Paradise, The Grid (in a World Within-type of situation), Symphony of Sorcery, La Cite de Cloches, Country of the Musketeers, Pride Lands or Land of the Dragons; and see how the Darkness manage to twist these worlds due to the corruption it has inside too.
Like for example, having the entire of Beast's Castle world being twisted like how the Shadow Stalker/Dark Thorn did to the Ballroom
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Like can someone imagine the same but not just the Ballroom, but the entire Castle AND the forest too?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Like the area would be like the Valley of the Dark, but much more frightening. Like the Dark Forest in Dwarf Woodlands, but much more organical and shadowy. Plus this would bring a new type of Pureblood Heartless based on the Wolves of the film too. It could even be like a parallel to what happened to Belle's world in Mirrorverse as well too:
Stellar Magic has transformed the Mirrorverse world of Beauty and the Beast into a place where the woods and wilderness are savage and dangerous, and where all manner of terrifying beasts claim the forests.
It would be like that, but theses beasts would be Purebleed Heartless themselves, in their hometurf too.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I feel that the Mirrorverse's desings of Gaston's pelt would make for good Wolf Heartless designs, since not only would they fit the Realm of Darkness aesthetic, but there can be much more dangerous like the dark hyde, only this time there won't be bosses, but just a wolfpack of Heartless too.
I feel that an area like that would be called: Castle of the Dark, or Where Beasts Dwell, or a name like that to fit with the Realm of Darkness's nature.

Some old drawings I made of Aqua, drawing her the way I had imagined her after 12 years of being stuck in the Realm of Darkness. Ngl., I didn't like how she didn't change at all during that "time".

KH Japanese Translations Part 3
Series where I discussed changes dialogue using correct translations that I found online
The first one is in the Realm of Darkness where Mickey and Riku are talking.
The scene in general confuses people because in the localization Riku makes a big reaction and says
WHAAAAAAAAAAAT
Tumblr media
In the localization Mickey just tells Riku, Aqua is like Sora. It actually was Aqua looks like Sora which still is kinda confusing because he doesn't look like her?
But it would explain the reaction.
Tumblr media
Mickey reassures him and then in this scene Riku says something,
"Okay, if you look like Sora, you'll feel safer."
However the English version does this, "Okay... Good. Then, I guess she's gonna be all right."
It completely takes away the fact he said Sora. Like why??
Why did you take that away?
Like is it because it's trying to hide something?
Tumblr media
Then later in KH3 when you are saving everyone from defeat,
Namine says this:
Kairi is holding it up. Hurry and go.
Surely the fates of defeat can be changed.
However the English one makes Namine say,
It's because she is holding you together. Go.
Maybe that'll be enough to tip the scale in the other direction.
And that's kinda.. yeahhh it's very false and trying to be more romantic than the original line.
Like okay maybe she is a little bit, but it is Riku too since Riku is the light and all part of that lore.
But I don't understand why the English one has to make everything Hetero.
Part 1 - Various Translations KH2
Part 2: Incorrect Romance relationship
Part 0.5: Chikai translation is about Soriku
