It’s already been suggested by others that what was lost was Master Ava, and what was found was the Black Box. Revisiting some of the cutscenes that relate to the Box, Maleficent implies that it doesn’t even exist until this moment at the crossroads. This left me wondering what triggered it to reappear, considering that Xigbar sent Luxord to look for it before the war took place.

This other scene seems to imply that, in spite of Luxord’s assumption, Xigbar was probably also the one who sent Maleficent and Pete looking for it too:

It’s worth noting that Maleficent and Pete are under the impression that the box contains the Book of Prophecies. Potentially a manipulation by Xigbar to incentivize them, but I do think there’s a connection between it all.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Maleficent draws a connection between the data world of Khux, and the datascape of Recoded—both contain the data for all the worlds, albeit at different points in time. I don’t necessarily think the Box contains a physical copy of the book, but rather: as Jiminy’s journal is to the re:coded datascape, the Book of Prophecies is to the Box. The Book is the hard copy, the Box contains the data version.

This matches up with the irl meanings for a Black Box too:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The input being the book, the output being the data. The inside is a mystery. It’s a system that serves as a backup… probably in the case of the worlds being purged? If that’s the case, the Keyblade War (or more specifically, the summoning of KH) being what triggered the Box’s reappearance does make sense, because the world was almost purged. It was probably sent to Quadratum / outside the realm of existence to survive the purge, hence why it “did not exist”. Maybe it would then be returned after the war, in case it was needed to rebuild the world. This doesn’t really explain why Xigbar had apparently lost track of it though, or why he thought it was still in the Realm of Light.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
(There are also four Darknesses trapped within the Khux data world, which means they likely would have survived any sort of universal reset… )
Assuming I’m right, I wonder what could’ve happened so that the Box ended up in Unreality? Is that also why the Heartless/darkness are present in Quadratum in kh4? It’s probably a question for Missing-Link to answer, as well as why the Lost Masters might have been there too:

Lastly, jumping back to analyzing the epilogue, No Name is also found in this scene, and we see it fall into the ground (just like what happened for the fallen Keyblade wielders in KHUX—which is what formed the crossroads to begin with.) There isn’t as much to say here, but I will at least argue that Xehanort’s death is also a ‘loss’ that resulted in something being gained.

Had an idea for a crossover.
Arle, along with her constant companion Carbuncle and their friend Amitie, have once again gotten wrapped up in one of the Dark Prince Satan’s schemes to convince her to marry him (something involving messing with the weather around Primp Town to create a winter wonderland, which may or may not have been inspired by a song he heard in Suzuran). And, as usual, it all comes down to a Puyo Puyo Battle between the traveling mage and her wannabe fiance. She wins, also as usual, and makes Satan undo his spell, and she and her friends leave his latest gaudy castle victorious.
As they’re walking back to town, Amitie comments on how this was the first time she’s seen it snow in Primp, since their world doesn’t really have seasons like Ringo’s or Arle’s (and even if it did they're pretty near their planet's equator). This leads to a conversation about Arle’s home, the World of Sorcery, which she and her friends still haven’t managed to return to, even after almost a year and a half. Even Satan, who’s powerful enough to travel freely between worlds, can’t seem to figure out where it is.
While Amitie tries to reassure her that they’ll figure something out someday, a mysterious cloaked figure on the side of the road interrupts, seeming to have appeared out of nowhere, making cryptic statements about how their world has been connected and not bothering to clarify how or to what.
The girls try to question him, only to be ignored, and an ill wind begins to blow. The sky begins to go dark despite it being midday, and they run towards town in hopes of gathering their friends to work out what’s going on and hopefully put a stop to it. The cloaked figure, forgotten in the chaos, vanishes into the darkness.
As the girls run, they find their way blocked by strange shadowy creatures with eerie yellow eyes, though they’re thankfully no match for their magic so it doesn’t slow them down too much. Unfortunately, for every one they defeat at least a dozen more take its place, and they’re eventually overwhelmed and dragged apart, Carbuncle ending up with Amitie instead of Arle in the confusion.
Arle, desperate to reunite with her friends, eventually manages to fight her way out of the horde, finding herself in a ruined Primp Town Square, where everything, even the very ground, is being torn apart by the creatures and a decidedly unnatural dark storm. She continues to fight, but as the world crumbles around her, she knows that this is a battle she can’t win, and eventually she finds herself tumbling down into the abyss…
…and when she next opens her eyes, it’s to an unfamiliar alleyway and a starry night sky.
Yeah long story short, Maleficent and her Counsil of Idiots mistook Amitie for a Princess of Heart because Secret Reincarnation of Literal Sun Goddess, and now all the Puyo characters are scattered across the Worlds and Arle's gonna be teaming up with a lost kid holding a giant key, an angry sailor-turned-wizard with the worst luck in the universe, a clumsy low int./high wiz. knight and a cricket with a magic therapy license to find her weird rabbit thing and two other lost kids and save the universe for the 80th time.
Also Shezo's stuck in the Realm of Darkness with a very lost semi-amnesiac Keyblade Master, a holographic emo girl whose dad is an egg or something, and his very hungry cursed sword that won't shut up about how they're in a world literally made of its favorite food.
Welcome to Kingdom Hearts: Puyo Mix motherfuckers.

Runaway City AU talk ahead:
Sometimes when experiencing media of all kinds I end up thinking about crossover scenarios CONSTANTLY. The worst of it is when I think about how my own ocs would interact with the world or how characters would interact with those ocs. But enough about original characters, I'm here to share some thoughts I had about the gummi crew!
So for anyone that follows my main blog or knows me personally, you'll know I've been thinking about "Tales Of Symphonia: Dawn Of The New World" again! Obviously I have thought about KH crossovers before and several years ago I tried drawing Emil and Roxas together, however I haven't shared that one because I'm not so proud of how it turned out. When it comes to the Runaway City AU (as I'm tentatively calling it) I keep thinking about what worlds Roxas and co could visit for both thematic narrative purposes and for moving them along on their journeys, be it personal character growth or a step towards finding Sora! Unfortunately, I have a very obvious type when it comes to characters I like, and Emil has a very similar story to what Roxas is going through in this au...
Anyway I want to share a late game idea I had with Emil before I forget, but I can't exactly draw anything for it yet as I haven't shared enough context behind it! Spoilers ahead:
Anyone aware of Dawn would probably know about Ratatosk's Ain Soph Aur, and may or may not know you can use it in regular combat upon using Devil's Hellfire. Well, the idea is that Roxas would've met them on a first visit late enough in Emil's journey to be able to see this for himself, but early enough that the whole truth behind Ratatosk hasn't been revealed yet. After finding Sora, I had the idea that Roxas doesn't immediately remerge with him and instead Sora joins the crew as they try to find a way to allow both Sora and Roxas to live as themselves, hence the heartless Sora designs I'd shared! But, this leaves a chance for Sora to tag along on a second visit >:3
On the second visit, enough time would have passed for Emil to learn the truth about who and what he is, and subsequently seal his other half away in his heart. Emil is dealing with a lot, but so are Sora and Roxas, so they talk and confide in each other and try to give support and condolences. In the base game, Emil cannot use Ain Soph Aur after Ratatosk is sealed away, but he still has Ratatosk's power as he is a part of him. This probably comes up in conversation with Roxas even!
Now for the fun part!
If they'd been talking things through in room at an inn for example, then someone would have to come by to tell Sora an Roxas it's time to go. Danny is the one to fetch them, but while he's there he shows great respect and honor towards Tenebrae who immediately comments upon Danny's formality.
"Of course I'd respect you! Your job is one of the most important of them all. After all, it's only in darkness that stars shine the brightest!"
Now that may not be as nice to Tenebrae as poor Phantom had expected, but it does stick in the minds of Emil, Sora, and Roxas! While Sora is reminded of Riku by the statement, Roxas begins to think deeper. Sora is seen as a beacon of hope to the people that sent him on this quest in the first place, and yet he's so full of darkness that he becomes a shadow when he's feeling too emotional and high-strung. But even Roxas can see just how brilliantly he shines, while Roxas himself has no light or dark or his own. This would be a catalyst to Roxas deciding once and for all that he'll save Sora, even if it means sacrificing himself. Sora wouldn't like that; why would someone so set on living suddenly decide to sacrifice himself, and for HIM specifically? Roxas goes to bed, but Sora leaves the ship to make sure he has no chance of recombining in his sleep, and so he goes to Emil to talk!
Emil has taken the experience to think about his own plans, and from talking to Sora and Roxas he recognizes that there may be another way to go about things. Emil is Emil, but he is also Ratatosk, and while Emil doesn't want to let Ratatosk end all life in Aselia, he may not have to give Ratatosk the chance at all! I don't remember the exact conversation I had imagined, but Sora also comes away with the reassurance that Roxas wants to help him and he should respect his decision and accept the gift he's being given. And since Emil/Ratatosk is a summon spirit, he tells Sora to call him if he ever needs help, granting Sora yet another summon.
This is all to lead up to Emil relearning Ain Soph Aur and making it his own: Sora summons Emil into battle for the first time later to find Emil prepares an attack with "Darkness Empowers, Ain Soph Aur!" Sora is a bit confused about the first part, but internally Roxas is filled with glee and pride for Emil being able to accept himself and his power as his own!
