Już kiedyś pisałem, że miejscowe Koło Gospodyń Wiejskich (LOL) robi nam pod górę. Zawsze było monopolistą i wydawało im się, że wszystko jest dla nich. Kiedy pojawiliśmy się my, nagle wytoczyły nam wojnę. Czepiają się kurwy o wszystko. Postanowiliśmy odpowiedzieć.

Czego panie same nie robiły, a nam zarzucały że nie robimy, postanowiliśmy zrobić akcję sprzątania. Tak bez większej okazji. Bo jest po prostu syf. Zrobiliśmy ogłoszenia, powrzucaliśmy na dziesiątki grup i profili, żeby nikt nie mówił, że nie wiedział. - Przyszła jedna osoba. Jedna. - Miejscowa młodzież patologiczna rozjebała się na scence i oglądała. Czaicie? Chociaż by się usunęli. Nie. Wyjebali się przed TV i oglądają. Porobiliśmy zdjęcia na profil. Jest git. Półtorej godzinki i ogarnięte.

Potem było spotkanie z Sołtyską. - Przez dwa lata "oddawaliśmy" fundusz sołecki, żeby zrobić tą jebaną salę, ale żeby potem raz a dobrze zrobić boisko. I co? KGW nas wyruchało. Drugiego roku kasa miała iść na wyposażenie sali. Stoły, krzesła, gry, nagłośnienie... Nie. Znowu poszło na kuchnię. Wczoraj się dowiedzieliśmy, że w tym roku też chcą na kuchnię. I to jeszcze nie docelowo a doraźnie, bo jak powiedziały, na razie ma działać, a potem się kupi tak jak było w planach. Czyli rozpierdalanie hajsu. - Pan C. się wściekł, bo dalej wszystko jest po staremu. Dwa lata dostały i nadal nic. Teraz czas na nas i resztę wioski. Co to za świetlica wiejska, gdzie nic nie ma. Bo serio nie ma. Jest zamknięta kuchnia i kurwa nawet jednego stołu. - Piszemy projekt i idziemy go przegłosować, bo KGW przegięło pałę. Wyposażają te jebaną kuchnię jakby Master Chefa chciały prowadzić, a nikt z tego nie korzysta. Jak robiliśmy strefę kibica to sami przynosiliśmy rzeczy. Jak robiliśmy turniej tak samo. A to wszystko powinno być dostępne na świetlicy. No i znowu będzie starcie tytanów.

"After the school board in Newberg, Ore., banned displays of Pride flags, Black Lives Matter signage, and other supposedly “political” items, citizens have responded by erecting a large wooden Pride flag on a hill.

Erin and Jaybill McCarthy, who have a farm near Newberg High School, posted on social media about their plans for the flag. Many people responded by donating funds for materials, and volunteers from all over the state joined the couple Sunday to put the flag up, Portland TV station KGW reports.

On 17 by 30 feet of plywood, they painted a progress Pride flag, which incorporates not only the traditional rainbow colors of the flag but black and brown stripes for people of color and pale pink, light blue, and white for transgender people. It now sits on a hill within view of the high school football field."

A mother and her neighbors broke down a door to safely rescue her 7-year-old child, who was snatched from a playground in Oregon.

Cops arrested the kidnapper and said they were grateful for “the quick-actions and watchful eyes of the mother and neighbors.”

The incident took place Wednesday while the child was playing outside his apartment complex in Tigard. His mother was keeping an eye on him from inside the apartment. Cops said the mother saw the accused man, James Harman II, 56, grabbing her son from the playground, according to the Kansas City Star.

Neighbors also sensed something wrong when they saw the man with the child.

"I noticed that he was starting to lure the kid inside his apartment, and so I ran down and I was like screaming for another neighbor to get him," witness Amanda Terpening told KGW-TV. "And when we finally got to the back door it was just closing and the door locked."

Another witness, Ashley Scott, also recalled seeing the 7-year-old boy at the playground before looking again about 15 to 20 minutes later to find Harman walking with the child.

“We see him walking with the little boy down the hill, then he walks him back, then he comes in and takes him into his house,” Scott told KOIN 6.

Harman took the boy to his apartment and locked the door with both of them inside. The mother and neighbors followed the man and broke the door down, but Harman ran out the back door with the child. The abductor ultimately let the child free.

“He just kinda let him out and like let his hand go,” Scott told the outlet.

The mother hugged her boy and “was crying, and when she was crying and weeping you could hear him weeping when they finally met arms together,” Scott added.

“She would not let him go, she had him, she made sure she had her baby,” she went on to say.

Officers from the Tigard Police Department arrived at the scene and took Harman to the Washington County Jail. He was charged with first-degree kidnapping but may face additional charges.

Scott said she has been living next to Harman for close to a year and would even have conversations with him frequently. However, she recently noticed his behavior changing.

Investigators found evidence that led them to believe Harman abducted the boy with the intention of harming him.

"Times are changing. Times are not like before, when we can just let our kids be out to have fun," neighbor Pedro Fernandez told KGW-TV. "Unfortunately there’s people like him that we have to keep an eye on too."

The police department said in their statement: “We are also grateful for the quick-actions and watchful eyes of the mother and neighbors involved in this situation.”

As Joan Gould explains in her book “Spinning Straw Into Gold,” fairy tales operate within a “visual code.” Mythographer Marina Warner dubs it “a symbolic Esperanto.” Whatever you call it, fairy tales use a kind of symbolic shorthand that allows them to convey complex concepts in short, easy to digest metaphors. “The symbolism comes alive and communicates meaning,” Warner explains.

From story to story, the symbols are the same, allowing us to quickly understand the universal truth each fairy tale is meant to convey. In his book, “The Uses of Enchantment,” child psychologist Bruno Bettelheim explained that the fairy tale forest, for example, represents “the dark, hidden, near-impenetrable world of our unconscious.” Gould says that, in a fairy tale, “the good must be beautiful while the wicked are ugly,” not because beauty is prized above all else, but because outer beauty represents inner goodness.

In Disney’s “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs,” the prince does have permission to kiss Snow White. He just doesn’t get it in writing and signed in triplicate. When Snow White and her prince meet at the beginning of the film they fall in love. It’s love at first sight, true, but in the language of fairy tales, this symbolically tells us that they each have seen the other’s inner selves, as represented by their outer beauty.

If he hadn’t kissed her at the end, the prince would have condemned Snow White to the “sleeping death” forever because only “love’s first kiss” can wake her. The fact that his kiss does wake her up proves their love is true. Snow White’s prince is exactly the kind of man a mother should want for her daughter.

People like Tremaine and Dowd are misrepresenting fairy tales to our children. They are pulling them out of the symbolic and plonking them down in the real world — a place fairy tales (as the name suggests) never even pretended to inhabit.

In doing so, they are robbing a generation of children of the lessons these stories have taught us for centuries. When a little girl puts on a tiara and happily pulls her flouncy princess dress from her dress-up bin, she isn’t participating in a patriarchal structure that keeps women down — she’s cloaking herself in glory.

Portland Police Bureau Chief Chuck Lovell in a Dec. 16 video appealed to the public and insisted that the public needed to lock arms and "do everything we can together to break the cycle of violence."

"Gun violence has plagued our city at twice the rate of last year," he said. "On average, someone is shot in Portland roughly every two days."

"We've come together to mask up, to stay home to keep others safe. We have come together to do our best to stop the spread of a deadly disease," he continued. "Violence is also a disease that kills and our community is suffering the consequences."

"We cannot lose sight of the fact these are human beings who have died," Lovell added.

According to a report from KGW-TV, Portland Police Bureau Lieutenant Greg Pashley reported that there were at least 225 victims of gun violence in Portland in 2020 alone.

"The number of bullets that must have been flying around our neighborhoods, city streets, sidewalks — it's awful," Pashley said.

The bureau is now asking for a a community-wide effort and action to help put a stop to gun violence across the city after its gun violence reduction team was disbanded over the summer.

The team was dismantled after activists and gun control activists said that the bureau was guilty of racism in "stopping people of color disproportionately to others," the station reported.

Pashley later said that "[s]ocial services, government organizations, non-government organizations, church based [organizations]" are of utmost importance "so that people feel as if they have support and options other than to act out violently."

I grew up in China. At the time, adults had nothing else to read other than books written by Mao Zedong. A collection of Mao’s books was a typical wedding gift for the newlyweds. Naturally, there weren’t many choices for children’s books either. The few children’s books I read had no adorable characters, nor did any convey a sense of humor or wit. There wasn’t much color in the books either. Most of the drawings were black and white, just like our colorless, dull life under socialism. One story I still remember was “The Rooster Crows at Midnight.” It was about an evil landowner, Zhou, who was very cruel to laborers who worked for him. The story said the Chinese Communist Party liberated laborers and distributed land and livestock formerly owned by Zhou to these poor laborers. One night, children patrolling the village caught Zhou as he was trying to steal a chicken. I still remember the picture in the book that depicts the scene when Zhou got caught: he knelt on the floor, head dropped, back bent, and hands tied back; the children who surrounded him all pointed their shining spears at him, with an indignant look on their faces. The author of the book disclosed in an interview later that this book was based on a true story. In real life, Zhou confessed his crime in a struggle session and was beaten to death. That’s the story I remember from my childhood. I had many nightmares after reading it. The Chinese Communist Party even turned this story into a movie. The CCP wanted people to believe owning private property and having more wealth than other people is evil. This propaganda campaign was effective. Zhou, the demonized landowner, soon became synonymous with evil. In a totalitarian regime, children’s books aren’t meant to bring any joy or inspire a healthy imagination. Instead, their sole purpose is to instill the correct political ideology in young minds so we would be prepared to become devoted soldiers of Communism. Like everyone else, I despised Zhou, the evil landowner, until years later I learned that my great-grandfather had been a landowner also. My great-grandfather was always kind, generous, and hardworking. He earned his land inch by inch through sweat, tears, and even blood. The CCP took all his land and livestock away in the name of “land reform.” He had to endure many cruel struggle sessions, but miraculously, he survived. Learning the truth about my great-grandfather made me feel that the CCP had cheated me out of my childhood twice. Not only did I not have a normal childhood, but also I fell for the CCP’s lie that landowners like my great-grandfather were terrible people.

Some families pleaded with the new administration to honor the previous agreements, one couple writing that they were counting on the leave to deal with “unforeseen complications” during the birth of their child.

“[T]he remaining 9-10 weeks afforded to federal employees is critical to our family and livelihoods as we work to raise a strong, healthy boy under unique and unforeseen complications to our birth plan,” the married Department of Homeland Security officials wrote.

But their calls were disregarded by Biden’s transition team, which said the officials’ previously pledged benefits including payroll ended when former President Donald Trump departed the White House. Continuity between administrations is a long-established tradition in the interests of fairness and unity.

“We understand that a few Trump appointees, including a handful currently on parental leave, submitted last-minute requests to remain on government payroll,” one White House official said. “Because these requests were received so close to Inauguration Day… there was no way to implement an exception to the rule in a way that is fair to all outgoing appointees, including many who resigned as expected without making requests for extraordinary benefits.”

Instead of keeping their leave, “appointees have been advised that they have options including COBRA and the Affordable Care Act.”

The broadcasting part of Oregon Public Broadcasting 

On the hills west of Portland stand a few magnificent towers that we take for granted as silent witnesses. But they bring important things into our lives. Today a few members of the board of Oregon Public Broadcasting had the chance to tour the site that carries our TV and radio signals to half the population of Oregon.

The site is a joint venture of OPB and another local TV station, KGW but the 1,000 foot tower is festooned with FM and TV antennas from OPB, KGW, and dozens of other radio stations that are tenants sharing the facility and paying rent. From 100 watt radio stations to tens of thousands of watts of TV power.

The signals from the studios get up here a few different ways; fibre-optic, microwave, or internet connection, or some combination to provide backup. But once here, the high tech encoding and decoding and compression has to give way to amplification and the physics of getting tens of thousands of watts of radio frequency a fifth of a mile up the tower to be funneled and focused into our households.

The interior looks like a cross between a computer laboratory and a brewery; solid state and valve transmitters generating the power, and massive copper conduits, like super-sized coax cables to get that power up to the actual antennas.

The switches for this are Frankenstein movie manual; you have to physically throw a big switch to disconnect and reconnect a massive copper pipe to turn the antenna on or off, then the signals have to be combined by a daisy-chain of physics, and all these connections have to be filled with compressed air to keep water out. In one area a conduit had to be kinked a little to make sure that the 3 meter wavelength signals arrived at the combiner at the same time and in phase. Principles that Marconi would have been familiar with. 

There aren’t any moving parts to any of this stuff but the complexity of the technology, business relationships, government regulations, and changing consumer preferences for media and entertainment means that there will be huge changes to manage in OPB’s future.
