Bro, why am i just finding out that the Brad Marchand is actually a pretty good guy, and is one of the most outspoken LGBTQ allies in the NHL?

Okay so I know we all watch BL for the gay, but I wanna talk about ALLIES in Kieta Hatsukoi. Namely, Hashimoto, Akkun, and Tanaguchi-sensei. Because Aoki facing his own internalized homophobia is - to an extent - a major part of the show, and the people around him being accepting of who he loves really helps with that.

Starting with Hashimoto: never once does she think differently of Aoki for liking a guy, even when they both think they like the same one. She is only ever happy that she has a friend who understands how she feels, someone to talk to and confide in who will do the same for her. And I want to point out: this is NOT done in a tropey, gay-best-friend way. Her acceptance of him is immediate and unconditional, and the scene of him coming out to her really highlights why Aoki had a crush on her in the first place. Speaking of, when she finds out Aoki used to have a crush on her, there is none of the gross biphobic “but you can’t like both” rhetoric. Once again, she simply accepts who he is. Best girl of best girls.

Next, Akkun. Sure, he initially gets in the way of Aoki’s genuine confession because it had never occurred to him that Aoki might actually have feelings for Ida; but that always struck me as being about honesty and clearing up a misunderstanding, for him. When he finds out that he’s made a mistake and unintentionally hurt his friend, THAT is his main concern. He’s never shocked or even surprised by Aoki’s feelings, he’s just disappointed in himself. And once he gets over that, he becomes invested in getting them together. Possibly to fix his mistake, but more probably because he loves his friend and wants him to be happy.

I also want to point out how in Aoki’s coming out scene to both Hashimoto and Akkun, they both clearly and markedly notice his internalized homophobia; and reject it gently but with complete sincerity. Hashimoto’s, “I don’t think it’s weird at all,” and Akkun’s “then that ‘normal’ is wrong,” after Aoki implies that he, himself doesn’t see his attraction to Ida as normal. Both of them notice that he’s doing this, and they reassure him. Not in a way that’s super grand or over the top, but just by being honest with him. They’re small moments, but they matter to Aoki.

And when that homophobia becomes external, with Okano-sensei; Hashimoto and Akkun are still gentle and firm in their reassurance than his love for Ida is completely okay and natural. When he once again tries to put himself down, to understand Okano-sensei’s point of view (because Aoki is a kind person sometimes to a fault), they don’t let him. Hashimoto gets verbally angry, and although Akkun - in typical Akkun fashion - makes a joke, you can tell when Aoki is speaking that Akkun’s expression is pissed. (We also get one of my favorite Ida lines in the show here, “That’s a big deal!” but we’re talking about allies, not main ships.)

And lastly, Taniguchi-sensei. While his support isn’t the most overt, it is shown time and time again in the show that he’s aware and supportive of Aoki and Ida’s relationship, and tries to gently guide and help them where he can. Whether that’s distracting the class from the two of them in the second episode, or his conversation with Okano-sensei in episode 8, or his proud smile when Ida goes after Aoki in episode 10. And it is so, so important for Aoki to have an adult in his life that truly sees him, that pays attention to him; but that doesn’t treat him any differently at all. Taniguchi-sensei never even brings up the relationship between his students, he just quietly supports them from the background. No expectation of recognition, just a genuine desire for his students to be happy.

In BL media we so often focus on the main ships (because cute, and also representation matters), but part of that representation is that of allies, of people AROUND the main ships who support them and accept them. Kieta Hatsukoi does this better than any other BL I’ve seen. Maybe due to the sweet, kind, innocent nature of the show itself; but it’s still extremely refreshing to see it done so right.

Straight and cis people will say that they are allies, but you will NEVER measure up to my dentist.

Me: "Hey, is it ok if I can change my name on my info from [DEADNAME] to Aspen?"

Random woman that I wasn't even talking to in the chair next to me: "Honey, if that's the name you had at birth, [DEADNAME] is your only name."

My dentist, very slowly turning her rolley chair towards the woman: "Shush."

Me: *pissing myself laughing*
