sometimes it hurts me to remember that's s2 of s&b completely disregarded inej’s arc. because her biggest fear wasn’t that kaz and her couldn’t fall in love or touch - it was that she was afraid to become useless to him, afraid of what her parents would think of her, of what she though of herself, of what she wanted. and then they just wrote her off on somebody else’s ship when kaz was the one who bought that ship for her, the ship that she was captain off, that she used to hunt slavers so nobody would be hurt like she was hurt after kaz reunited her with her parents.

the ghafas are grounding inej for sneaking off at night to spend time with her boyfriend

wylan has a flute recital on the weekend that kaz pretends he won’t go to (no one is fooled)

nina and matthias go on dates to the ice cream shop, and matthias always lets nina eat most of his ice cream

the crows are safe, and instead of being criminals, they are simply a group of trouble-making, angsty teenagers. they are children who were allowed to be children. they get the childhoods they deserve.

There is a nebulous jordie lives au which lives entirely in my head in which jordie recovers from the plague while Kaz is still sick. He gets up to find them food and water only to return and discover Kaz is nowhere to be found. Still recovering from the fever, he searches the barrel for days before he finally sees Kaz wandering down the staves in a sort of fugue state, soaked to the bone with a haunted look in his eyes.

Kaz won’t tell him what happened, but jordie knows it’s bad because his baby brother flinches every time he touches him, and soon enough he’s started wearing gloves, even in the height of summer.

Soon, they discover kazs gift for cards, and it keeps them fed and clothed, if not much else. Kaz is angry at jordie for losing the money, refuses to let him make any decisions. Jordie is beholden to his angry traumatized little brother because he can’t deny that he failed them the first time around.

Kaz is offered a place in his pick of the gangs, but the only one willing to take both him and his tag along older brother is the dregs. Jordie dies a little bit inside when they join up, when they take the tattoo side by side, but he’s not sure they’ll survive another winter on the streets.

And the plot of SoC generally goes on from there. Jordie tags along on the ice court, he and Jesper test kazs patience at every turn, he’s constantly offering unsolicited annoying older brother advice about Inej.

This lends itself to a really interesting exploration of Kaz and jordies relationship, what holds brothers together in the face of incredible trauma, the skewed power dynamic of Kaz becoming the breadwinner for them both at the age of nine, etc etc. But mostly, this au is a vessel for the sailing of the ultimate crack ship, which is of course, jordie/alys Van Eck.

I think a really underrated quote from chapter 3 of Six of Crows is when Van Eck tells Kaz that he can’t help but wonder what “a boy of your intelligence might have amounted to under different circumstances” and Kaz replies “I’d just be stealing from a better class of sucker” because whilst at face value this is simply a suggestion of this is who he is and circumstance wouldn’t have changed that it’s also yet again an insult of Van Eck and a continuation of Kaz’s direct assault of Van Eck’s performative morality and the philosophical conversation they’ve been having about murder and trade - such as when Kaz states that 1 in 5 if Van Eck’s ships never return to port because they sink or fall prey to pirates so “let’s not speak of violence” or of Kaz openly claiming that they share the same cause for both being murderers: “profit”.

Shadow and Bone changing Inej's first kill is the only change I'll defend with my life because the symbolism of her first kill being from a balcony IN A CHURCH to save Kaz's life and Kaz looking at her like he's just found religion while reassuring her that it's okay and she just saved his life........

i love the sab show but one of the things that makes ne mad is Kaz judging Inej and Jesper for "Jes" when in the books, Kaz is one of the few characters to call him that. ("Don't tell me my business, Jes" in ch 3 of soc). if i remember correctly, it's really only him and Colm, and maybe Wylan. like it totally downplays their relationship and makes it seem like Kaz views Jesper as an employee instead of a close friend that he trusts and cares for.
