Stark Spangled Rebirth
Chapter 2: Is This A Test?
Summary: Steve begins his life at Camp Lehigh, throwing himself into training alongside the other candidates for Operation Rebirth and is shocked when on his first day he comes face to face with someone he hadn’t been expecting to see again…
Warnings: Bad Language words. Some over the clothes making out (NSFW, 18+)
Pairing: Steve Rogers x OFC Katie Stark
A/N: I might have taken a few liberties here with the way things worked in the Army in the 40s but, let’s face it, no more than the MCU did! Any mistakes are my own. I’ll probably spot them once posted but, whatever!
This series is my contribution of sorts to the CATF 10 Year Anniversary Challenge.

Chapter 1
At Camp Lehigh the new recruits were met by their Sergeant, who escorted them to their quarters. There it was explained to them that as they were to form part of a programme run by the Strategic Science Reserve, a separate unit from the rest of the army training at the base, but more would become clear in an hour or so when they reported for exercise. They were then issued their standard uniform, which was awkward for Steve as even the smallest sizes felt like they drowned him but he shrugged it off reminding himself that he had finally done it. He was here, training to be a soldier.
He changed and then Sergeant Duffy appeared again, barking at them to fall in line and they followed him down to an exercise field at the rear of the barracks. Here they once more lined up, Steve taking his place in between teo men whose names he couldn’t remember and they stood, waiting.
“Recruits, attention!” A female voice called and Steve felt his mouth drop open, because he knew the owner of said voice. “Gentlemen, I’m Agent Stark, this is Agent Carter.” He turned to face Katie as she began walking down the line, dressed in a sharp army uniform with another woman at her side and a man behind them both who was clutching a box which contained clip files. As she reached Steve, Katie stopped and looked at him, giving him a bashful, almost apologetic smile as the other woman continued to walk.
And wait. Her surname was Stark? As in, Howard Stark? Was that her husband? Had he kissed a married woman? Fuck! Steve swallowed his worry down and averted his eyes as Katie passed down the line following Agent Carter, their eyes flicking to each man in turn.
“We supervise all operations for this division.” Agent Carter spoke in a strong British accent before she was interrupted.
“What’s with the accent, Queen Victoria?” A man further down the line stated rather obnoxiously, causing Agent Carter to stop. Katie drew up alongside her, and Steve watched as, Katie’s hands fell to her hips and she studied the man who’d spoken out of line. “Thought I was signing up for the U.S. Army!”
“What’s your name, soldier?” Agent Carter asked.
“Gilmore Hodge, your Majesty.”
At that the two women exchanged a glance and Agent Carter took a deep breath. “Step forward, Hodge.”
The man obliged, a smirk on his face as he looked around a little, no doubt to check everyone was watching.
“Put your right foot forward.” Agent Carter instructed.
“Mmm… we gonna wrestle? Cause I got a few moves I know you’ll like.” Hodge spoke, before puckering his lips up in a kissing gesture.
Then, there was a flurry of movement and in a flash Katie was behind him, jerking his arm up his back. She aimed a sharp kick to the back of his knee causing Hodge to stumble to the floor. She went with him, her knee planted firmly in the base of his spine, arm twisting even more and he gave out a yell, “Okay, okay I yield.”
Steve gave a little huff of laughter, as did the man to his right as Katie stood up, not a hair out of place and smoothed down her jacket and trousers as Hodge rose to his feet. No sooner had he done that Agent Carter punched him hard, straight in the face.
And Steve laughed a little more this time, hastily straightening his face when he noticed a man, a Colonel according to the pips on his shoulders, hopping out of jeep as he barked to the two agents.
“Agent Carter, Agent Stark.”
Both of them wheeled round, springing to attention, saluting.
“Colonel Phillips.”
“Sir.”
“I see you’re breaking in the candidates. That’s good!” He nodded to the two women before he looked down at Hodge “Get your ass up out of that dirt and stand in that line at attention 'til somebody comes and tells you what to do.”
“Yes, Sir.” Hodge scrambled to his feet and slotted back into the place he’d been stood previously, looking a little sheepish.
Steve watched as Colonel Phillips started to walk down the line, addressing the new army recruits. “General Patton has said that wars are fought with weapons but they are won by men. We are going to win this war because we have the best men…” He paused a little at that point as he looked at Steve. Steve kept his face straight, looking directly ahead. He knew full well what the Colonel was thinking, but he was here to prove him wrong. “And because they’re gonna get better. Much better. The Strategic Scientific Reserve is an Allied effort made up of the best minds in the free world. Our goal is to create the best army in history. But every army starts with one man. At the end of this week we will choose that man. He will be the first in a new breed of super-soldiers. And they, will personally escort Adolf Hitler to the gates of Hell.”
Super-Soldiers? The end of the week? That was five days away! Steve could hear a few murmurs down the line as some of the recruits began to exchange glances.
“Did I ask any of you to talk?” Phillips barked and silence fell once more. “The man we select will go through a procedure,” he continued, “an experimental procedure that, if successful, will significantly enhance his physical stature, amplifying all his qualities and abilities. This is not something we take lightly. It is for this reason that you will be assessed not just on your current physical abilities but your mental capacity and it won’t be easy. So if any of you are having second thoughts,” he once more paused at Steve who, as before, ignored him, “speak now or forever hold your peace.”
No one made a sound.
***** Whilst Steve didn’t have much time to think about Katie for the rest of the day as most of his energy was taken by keeping up with the afternoon’s exercise, he found himself with plenty of time to think about her over dinner. He kept himself to himself, taking a seat at the end of a large table in the mess hall, unable to prevent the sullen mood he found himself in.
He knew it was stupid, as he hardly knew the dame, but he felt betrayed, and if truth be told a little confused. Betrayed at the fact she’d kept her true identity and vocation from him, confused as to why she’d kissed him, especially if she was married and knew they’d end up working together. It confounded his original opinion that she’d done it out of some kind of obligation, a thank you if you will for him stepping in that day on the street. Not that he needed to step in, it was perfectly clear now she’d been able to handle herself.
He looked down at the tasteless bully beef and dumplings, before he sighed and continued to eat. Whilst he wasn’t particularly hungry he knew that he had to keep his strength up, especially if he wanted to have any chance to complete the training that was in store tomorrow. When he’d had his fill, he took the tray over to the clear down area and headed outside into the warm New Jersey evening.
It was still light, the birds in the trees singing their melodic evening chorus as Steve headed over the camp towards the sleeping barracks he and the other Project Rebirth candidates had been assigned to. He trudged down the dirt path, hands in his baggy uniform pockets when he heard Katie shouting to him. Taking a deep breath, he stopped, and turned to face her, saluting.
“Agent Stark.”
“Woah, at ease, we ain’t on parade now!” She shook her head.
“Yes Ma’am.” He dropped his arm but kept it firmly by his side, still standing to attention, focussing on a spot slightly behind her.
“What’s with the Ma’am?” She frowned but Steve ignored her question. Her frown deepened and she cocked her head to one side. “Wait, are you angry at me?” Steve’s eyes flicked to hers for a second and he swallowed looking away causing her to sigh. “Steve, I…”
“You lied to me.” He blurted out, his eyes returning to hers and she frowned.
“No, I just didn’t tell you my full story.” She shrugged, lamely.
“Where I come from that’s called lying.”
“Oh come on, Steve, it’s not like you actually asked what I did for a living!”
“I asked if ya worked for Howard Stark.” He folded his arms. “And you said you did.”
“Well, I do, sorta…”
“Oh, is that as well as sorta being married to him?”
“Married?” Katie’s eyes narrowed before they widened again and she grinned. “What, you think…oh my God Steve!” She let out a laugh.
“You know, I’ve had my fill of people laughing at me today.” He rolled his eyes and turned to leave, an angry flush spreading up his neck.
“Howie’s my brother!”
“Your brother?” He stopped dead.
“Yes, you know, same mom, same dad.”
Steve groaned, feeling like a total, total idiot and after a moment or two of cursing himself he turned back to face her, his face bashfully tinged red. “Why didn’t you tell me?”
“Tell you what?”
“That you were related? Or what it is that you actually do?”
“Because I didn’t know I was supposed to.” She looked at him. “Plus, I kinda liked not being Agent Katie Stark for a moment and just being, I dunno, some regular girl.”
Steve looked at her again before he glanced away, not quite sure what had come over him. He’d literally never had a conversation with a woman that lasted longer than a few minutes, if that, and here he was for the second time with her just rolling with it, and not just that, he was actually being a little rude. His ma would not be happy.
“I’m sorry.” He offered, his manner contrite. “That was rude. I guess, well, it was just a shock, that’s all.”
“Do you know how people usually react when I tell them what I actually do?” Katie sighed, shaking her head “Most guys run a mile.”
“Well, I’m not like most guys.” Steve instantly retorted, repeating the sentiment she had expressed to him mere days ago. She blinked a little, before she gave a huff of laughter and dropped her eyes to the floor.
“Touche, Rogers. Touche.”
“Can I ask you something?” Feeling emboldened Steve asked hastily, before he chickened out.
“Sure.” She nodded.
“Did you know? That I was gonna be here, I mean.”
“Not for certain.” Katie shook her head. “I had an idea when you told me it was a doctor from a Science Division that had recruited you but until I saw your name on the new-recruit roster this morning, I didn’t know for sure.”
“Right.” Steve nodded, licking his lips a little.
“Does it matter?” Katie frowned.
“Not especially.” He popped a shoulder. “Just kinda figured that if you knew you’d be seeing me each day, you wouldn’t have…you know…”
“Kissed you?”
“Yeah, that.” Steve felt the heat rise in his neck as he thought back to that moment. He ran his hand through his hair in a nervous fashion. “I mean I know you probably did it because you either felt kinda sorry for me or like you hadda thank me but this has gotta be awkward for you right? Seeing me every day as a reminder, but it’s not like I told anyone so-“
“Woah, woah, stop!” Katie shook her head, stepping towards him. “Steve, I don’t care who you told. I’m not embarrassed if that’s what you think.”
“You’re not?”
“No!” Katie looked at him like he was stupid. “And I didn’t kiss you because I felt sorry for you or because I felt I owed you, I kissed you because I wanted to.”
“You wanted to.” Steve looked at her, not quite sure if he believed her or not.
“Is that so hard to comprehend?”
“Frankly, yes!” He snorted. “I mean, look at ya. You’re…” he gestured with his hand towards her. “And I’m…”
“Well lucky for you I’m not a shallow bimbo then isn’t it?” She said, an air of annoyance in her tone. “I might be a Stark, and yes, I’m privileged which means I’m expected to act a certain way with a certain type of man from a certain type of background. Maybe I just wanna act how I wanna act, with who I choose. And your assumption right then? That’s exactly why I didn’t tell you.”
“Katie, I didn’t-” But even by the time he’d finished half his sentence, she’d turned on her heel and left “-mean it like that.” He finished a little lamely, watching her go. His hands dropped to his bony hips and he glanced at the floor, toeing the dirt slightly before he looked up and around.
He felt so out of place, the one thing he’d wanted to do and now he was here he felt as small and as insignificant as he had ever felt. And to top it off, he’d just upset probably the one person he could have relied upon for support. But it was more than that. He felt guilty, guilty that he’d upset her and made assumptions about her, when he actually in all fairness knew nothing about her. He’d judged a book by its cover, which was what he hated everyone doing to him. With a final groan he turned and headed back towards the sleeping quarters, to unpack the small chest of belongings he’d brought with him.
If today was anything to go by, it was going to be a long week.
***** Long was an understatement.
By Monday morning, Steve had done five different physical assault courses, various runs loaded with equipment, taken part in a number of logic puzzles, had a one on one interview with Colonel Phillips, completed written, arithmetic and geography tests and been subject to another medical examination. He was now on a fuck knows how many miles drill run, being barked at once more by Sergeant Duffy.
“Pick up the pace, ladies! Let’s go!”
Steve was running as fast as he could, but still lagged ten or fifteen yards behind the main formation of the group. His legs ached, his chest hurt but he was damned if he was giving up.
"Double time! Come on! Faster! Faster! Move! Move!” Sergeant Duffy instructed as they rounded the corner of the dirt path, drawing up behind a jeep which was parked by a flag pole surrounded by white rocks on the ground. “Squad, halt!”
Finally, Steve could catch his breath. He bent over, hands on his knees as he inhaled deeply, watching the group of men as they gathered around their leader.
“That flag means we’re only at the halfway point.”
Half way? Great…just great.
“First man to bring it to me gets a ride back with Agent Carter. Move, move!”
Steve pushed his helmet back up his head, remaining where he was simply watching as the entire unit all tried to climb the pole. It was a free for all, men pushing each other out of the way, elbows flying, fists flailing. Steve however scanned the pole up and down, his brain logically thinking it through. There had to be a way to get that flag down without having to climb the pole, otherwise how did they put it up there in the first place?
“If that’s all you got, this army’s in trouble!” Duffy snapped “Get up there, Hodge! Come on! Get up there!”
Hodge, who had made it a few feet further than everyone else slid down to the ground and Duffy stood back, his arms folded, smirking a little. “Nobody’s got that flag in seventeen years!” He shook his head “Now fall back into line! Come on, fall in!”
That signalled the end of the little pole exercise, but not for Steve. As everyone cleared away he walked towards it, glancing first at the bottom of the pole, then up to the top, squinting slightly against the sun. If he was right…
“Rogers! I said fall in!” Duffy barked, but Steve ignored him as he bent down and pulled the pin out at the bottom of the pole causing it to fall with a loud crash to the ground in a cloud of dust. He tossed the pin to the floor with a clang as everyone fell silent, watching as he removed the flag from the rope which held it to the pole. He handed it to Sergeant Duffy on his way past.
“Thank you, sir.” He said gently as he climbed into the back of the jeep. Agent Carter turned to face him from her seat in the front and he shot her a smile which she returned, an amused look spreading across her features.
Steve was damned glad of that ride home as, following lunch, they were subjected to another physical activity, this one a seemingly endless circuit training involving star jumps, push up, sit ups you name it.
“Faster, ladies!” Agent Carter barked, as they were all busy doing push ups “Come on. My grandmother has more life in her, God rest her soul. Move it!”
A few more sets and she barked at them to get up, which they obeyed, springing to their feet just as Agent Stark arrived with Colonel Phillips and Dr Erskine. The three of them were clearly mid some debate, Katie looked a little annoyed and turned to Phillips snapping at him, her face flashing with anger. Erskine put his hand on her shoulder and shook his head gently and she rolled her eyes, turning away and looking over towards the group of men. She locked eyes with Steve who watched her for a second, before Agent Carter’s voice hit his ears and he began the jumping jacks she had instructed them to partake in.
“Come on, girls.”
Steve had no idea how many he did, but he continued going, his arms and legs both spreading and then coming back together as he made jump after jump. He grit his teeth, powering through the burn he was feeling in his muscles, tossing his head out of the way slightly as his dog tags bounced off his chest after a particularly energetic leap, smacking him straight in the nose.
And then he heard it.
“GRENADE!”
All logic flew from Steve’s head and as the rest of the unit scattered he instinctively dived towards the explosive, covering it with his body, curling his knees into his chest in an attempt to minimise the impact to everyone round him.
“Get away!” He yelled, waving his arm as Agent Carter ran towards him, “get back!”
He remained curled in on himself, waiting and waiting but nothing happened. Eventually he looked up, to see everyone was slowly starting to go back to normal and he sat up, frowning a little, his mouth hanging slightly open.
“It was a dummy grenade. All clear. Back in formation.” Someone spoke as Steve glanced first at Agent Carter then over to Phillips and Erskine and finally Agent Stark. As his eyes met hers a smile crossed her face and a flash of something that looked suspiciously like pride filled her pretty features.
“Is this is a test?” He asked as he sat on the floor, completely bemused at what had just happened.
Katie tore her eyes from his to turn to Dr Erskine who was also smiling and they both simultaneously moved their attention to Colonel Phillips. He shot them both a withering look as he spoke before he turned to walk away. As he passed Katie he stopped, pointed to Steve who was now getting to his feet and she nodded, saluting.
Erskine beamed at Steve before he turned to follow Phillips away, once again patting Katie’s shoulder as he left. Steve dusted himself down and then simply watched as Katie walked over to Agent Carter, his eyes following her every move. She whispered something to the other woman who raised her eyebrows, a soft smile crossing her face. Both women then looked at him, before Peggy gave Katie a curt nod as she called the remaining soldiers back into line.
“Private Rogers,” Katie spoke, her eyes soft as she glanced at him, “with me.”
“Ma’am.” He scrambled after her, tripping over his feet slightly as he hurried to catch up with her, glancing back at the line of men who were now being addressed by Agent Carter before she dismissed them all.
“What…where are the rest of the guys goin’?” he began to ask and Katie turned to look at him as he fell into step besides her, to her left.
“They’re leaving.”
“Leaving?” Steve frowned.
“Yup.” Katie nodded as she led him across the training field and onto the gravel track. “They’ll be re-assigned to other units.”
“Other units?” Steve frowned, before her words finally registered “You mean…”
Katie stopped and turned to look at him, smiling as she brushed some of the dirt from his shoulder. “Congratulations. You’re gonna become our first Super Soldier.”
Steve blinked, swallowed and then shook his head. “Is this a joke?”
“No.” Katie shook her head. “I can assure you this is deadly serious.” She took a deep breath and turned to walk down the track to her right.
“Why me?” Steve blurted out as they rounded a row of military jeeps
Katie smiled at him “The fact you’re even asking that should tell you everything you need to know. But if you really want the detailed answer, you should ask Abe.”
“Who?”
“Dr Erskine.”
“Okay, I will, where is he?” Steve looked round almost as if he expected the Doctor to appear form behind the munitions store they were passing.
“I suspect on his way to Brooklyn to meet Howie at the lab.” Katie replied “He’ll be back later so you can talk to him then.”
“The lab’s in Brooklyn?” The surprise was evident in Steve’s voice as Katie led him to one of the large green dome like structures that housed the offices. “So that’s why you were there that day.”
Katie grinned. “Not just a pretty face, are ya?” She stood still, snapping to attention and saluted to the guard on the door who immediately saluted back.
“Agent Stark.” He greeted as he stepped to his right, opening the door for them both to step into. Steve followed behind her down a long corridor. They turned left at the end and Katie stopped outside a door to their right which held a name tag informing them that it was Colonel Phillips’ office. She gave a sharp rap, and then without waiting for an answer opened the door and stepped in, Steve following.
The Colonel looked up as they entered the room, placing the pen he’d been writing with down on his desk.
“Shut the door.” Phillips barked and Steve scrambled to do as he was told before he drew himself up tall and saluted his superior. “At ease, Rogers.”
“Sir.” Steve nodded and relaxed as much as he could. At that point there was another knock on the door and he turned to see Agent Carter step inside.
“Ma’am.” Steve nodded to Peggy who smiled at him.
“So, I’m assuming Agent Stark has given you the low down?” Phillips spoke and Steve turned back to him, giving a nod.
“Yes, sir.”
“Good, saves me a job.”
“When don’t I?” Katie quipped and Steve’s eyes widened at the fact she’d basically just sassed a superior officer. There was a moment’s pause before Phillips snorted.
“One of these days, Agent Stark, that mouth is gonna get you into trouble.”
“I look forward to it.”
Phillips shot her another look which she met with a smirk and he scoffed a little, turning his attention to Steve. “So, Rogers, Dr Erskine has chosen you as the candidate to become our first Super Soldier.”
“It’s an honor, Sir.”
“Do you have any questions?” Peggy looked at Steve.
Steve pondered for a second. Truth be told he had a lot of questions, but the biggest one, the why, that was going to have to wait for Dr Erskine himself. He took a deep breath and looked up at the Agent before his eyes flicked to Colonel Phillips, and back again.
“What does the procedure actually entail?”
“Agent Stark, you wanna take this?” Phillips looked at her and she nodded.
“You’ll be injected with Erskine’s formula.” Katie looked at Steve “This will cause immediate change to your cells, your DNA. Then to stimulate the change and growth, you’ll be subjected to an intense permeation of Vita-Rays, in a chamber that my brother and Erskine developed especially.”
“Is it safe?” Steve asked.
Katie took a deep breath and shrugged. “On the animal test subjects we’ve used, yeah but I’m not gonna lie to you Steve, other than a Nazi scientist named Johan Schmidt the serum hasn’t been tested on any human subject.”
“What happened to this Schmidt guy?” Steve asked and Katie looked at Phillips, then Peggy, and when she turned back to him he swallowed a little at the look of apprehension on her face.
“It didn’t go the way he planned, but that said the formula was incomplete. Erskine will be able to tell you more tomorrow.” She answered softly. Steve thought on her words for a moment, his eyes still locked onto hers as she licked her lips, offering him nothing but a shrug. “In simple terms, we don’t know if it’s gonna work or not. So you need to think carefully.”
“When is it gonna happen?”
“The procedure will take place tomorrow morning.” Agent Carter spoke. “So you have little over fourteen hours.”
“So despite what Agent Stark says,” Phillips spoke, shooting Katie a look which she met with an equally annoyed one of her own, “there’s little to no time for contemplation.”
“There’s fourteen hours…” Katie began to protest.
“Did I ask for your input?” Phillips snapped and she narrowed her eyes.
“No, you never do. Maybe if you did we-“
“If you want to remain part of this unit you’ll stop that sentence right there.” Phillips pointed at her. Katie’s mouth pressed into a thin line and she folded her arms, shaking her head as she looked away. Steve’s eyes turned back to Phillips who spoke. “If you want out, now is the time to speak up so we can find someone else. Are you in, Rogers? Because if you are, after this meeting and you leave this room, there’s no going back.”
“But I’ve only had like five days of basic training.” Steve frowned “Is that going to be enough?”
“We’re on a schedule.” Phillips shrugged, “It’s going to have to be.”
“Your basic training, or lack thereof, shouldn’t be a problem.” Peggy shook her head “Our intention is to continue to train you up fully so that you’re prepared to lead the others who we, well, who we convert.”
Steve took a deep breath and glanced once more at Katie, who was staring to her left, her jaw set. Was he in? He began to logically step through things in his head. Steve wasn’t an idiot, he knew full well that if he said no he’d be shipped off to another unit and likely sent home or shoved into some kind of non-combat role due to his current lack of physical abilities or strength. The serum might not work, but then what? He ended up deformed? Or dead? But if he was perfectly honest with himself, having had a taste of what it was like to do what he always wanted to, if the opportunity was taken away from him, he might as well be dead anyway.
It was a no brainer as far as he was concerned. He had to do this.
“I’m in.” Steve nodded, his voice loaded with conviction as he gave a firm nod.
To the side of him Katie took a deep breath, an action mimicked by Colonel Phillips, before the older man turned to Agent Carter who stepped to the side revealing a piece of paper on the desk.
“In that case then I need you to sign this.” Phillips said “It’s a form stating that you consent to the procedure. Just a formality that Stark is insisting on.”
“God forbid we do things properly.” Katie mumbled. Phillips shot her another withering glare before he waved a pen at Steve. Steve stepped forward, took the pen off him and glanced down at the form. His eyes scanned it and then, without further hesitation he scribbled his name on the space at the bottom.
“Congratulations Private Rogers.” Phillips nodded as Agent Carter moved to place the form in a filing cabinet at the back.
“So, now what do I do?” Steve asked.
“You can do what the hell you want, within reason.” Phillips shrugged “But you can’t leave base, can’t risk anything happening to you. Not now.”
“By the time you get back to your barracks, everyone else will have packed up and left so I suggest you make the most of the peace and quiet.” Agent Carter smiled. “Because you’re going to be pretty busy from Tomorrow onwards.”
Steve nodded to show he understood and then he was dismissed. Saluting to Phillips he turned to leave the room, followed by Katie who herself was leaving to see her brother.
“Is there anything in particular you’d like to eat tonight?” She asked him as they left the building. “And I don’t mean any of the shit they serve in the mess.”
Steve looked up. “I suppose some of Mrs Tromley’s home made preserve is out of the question?”
“Leave it with me.” She smiled and Steve looked at her for a second before he took a deep breath.
“Look, Agent- Katie, I err, wanted to apologise for my outburst the other night. I was rude and…”
“It’s okay, I don’t hold a grudge.” She paused and turned to face him. “Alright that’s a lie, I do. But only against people who deserve it.”
“And I don’t?” Steve asked with a slight smile and she shrugged.
“For now, no. Plenty of time for me to change my mind though.” And with that, just as she had done at the expo she turned and left him standing there, tossing him a wink over her shoulder as she walked away.
*****
Katie came through with the preserve, a small jar along with a crusty cob of bread was waiting in his bunk later that evening when he returned from the bathroom cabin. He ate sat on his bed, mulling everything over in his mind before he stood up and decided to go for a walk. He found a nice quiet spot hidden behind one of the munition sheds and sat to draw for a while, a particularly gnarled old tree the target of his attention. When the light diminished too much for him to see properly, he headed back and dropped his sketchbook into his rucksack before he settled down with a book open on his lap.
For the next few hours he tried to read but none of it was really sinking in. He had butterflies in his stomach, not nerves as such, but apprehension, definitely, at what he was letting himself in for. As he re-read the same sentence he’d been looking at for the last ten minutes, there was a knock at the door which made him jump slightly and he turned to look over his left shoulder as Dr Erskine stood in the doorway, a bottle and two glasses in his hand.
“May I?”
“Yeah.” Steve nodded, closing the book as Erskine walked over the floor, placing the glass on the trunk at the end of Steve’s bed.
“Can’t sleep?” Erskine asked as he moved towards the bed opposite Steve.
“I got the jitters, I guess.” Steve shrugged.
Erskine laughed “Me, too.”
“Can I ask you a question?” Steve dropped the book he had been reading down on the trunk next to the glass.
“Just one?” Erskine looked at Steve as he sat down facing him. Steve still had a lot of questions, but the one he wanted an answer to most was the one that flew out of his mouth.
“Why me?”
“I suppose that is the only question that matters.” Erskine said after a moment’s pause. He looked down at the bottle of schnapps he brought with him, turning the label so Steve could see it. “This is from Augsburg. My city. So many people forget that the first country that the Nazi’s invaded was their own.” He took a breath “You know, after the last war my people struggled. They felt weak. They felt small. And then Hitler comes along with the marching and the big show and the flags and the… and the… “ Erskine waved his hand as he took a deep breath, straightening his glasses “And he… he hears of me, my work and he finds me. And he says, ‘You’,” Erskine pointed to emphasise his point, “he says, ‘you will make us strong.’ Well, I am not interested.” Erskine shook his head as he placed the bottle on the floor between his feet, Steve’s eyes following his movements “So he sends the head of HYDRA, his research division. A brilliant scientist by the name of Johann Schmidt.”
That name Steve recognised from before, the one Katie told him about. He watched as Erskine continued talking, once more pushing his glasses up his nose. “Now, Schmidt is a member of the inner circle and he’s ambitious. He and Hitler share a passion for occult power and Teutonic myth. Hitler uses his fantasies to inspire his followers. But for Schmidt, it is not fantasy. For him, it is real. He has become convinced that there is a great power hidden in the Earth, left here by the Gods, waiting to be seized by a superior man. So when he hears about my formula and what it can do, he cannot resist.” Erskine paused as Steve looked at him, understanding immediately he was referring to Schmidt taking the formula. “Schmidt must become that superior man.”
Remembering what Katie had said, about it not going according to plan he looked at Erskine. “Did it make him stronger?”
“Yeah. But, there were other effects.” Erskine conceded, but didn’t elaborate further. “The serum was not ready. But more important, the man. The serum amplifies everything that is inside. So, good becomes great. Bad becomes worse.” He explained and Steve glanced down, taking all the information in “This is why you were chosen.”
At that Steve looked back up at him, his brow furrowing deeply as Erskine continued “Because a strong man, who has known power all his life, will lose respect for that power. But a weak man knows the value of strength, and knows compassion.”
“Thanks,” Steve said, frowning slightly, “I think.” He glanced at Erskine who smiled at him, and then waved in the direction of the two glasses on the trunk at the foot of the bed. As Steve took the glasses, pulling the top one out with his right hand, Erskine uncorked the schnapps and began to pour the liquid.
“Whatever happens tomorrow, you must promise me one thing.” Erskine said, corking the bottle one more and setting it down on the floor “That you will stay who you are.” Erskine took a glass off Steve and stared straight into his eyes, almost as if he was trying to drive the message home. “Not a perfect soldier, but a good-“ he pointed at Steve’s chest “- man.”
Steve took a deep breath, holding his glass up and he allowed that fleeting warmth of pride spread across his chest, just for a second, as he smiled. “To the little guys.”
“Ha ha!” Erskine agreed, chinking his glass against Steve’s but just as Steve was about to take a drink Erskine suddenly spluttered. “No! No! Wait! Wait! What I am doing?” He reached out, taking Steve’s glass off him “No! You have a procedure tomorrow. No fluids.”
Seriously?
Steve watched as Erskine poured the contents of Steve’s glass into his own and sighed a little, he’d been looking forward to that.
“All right. We’ll drink it after.” He shrugged.
“No! I don’t have procedure tomorrow.” Erskine gestured towards himself. “Drink it after? I drink it now.”
Steve gave a small smile as the doctor knocked back the clear liquid in the glass and was just about to speak to tease him a little about making sure he had a clear head for the morning, when there was another knock on the door. Steve’s head turned to look as Katie stepped inside the dorm, smiling.
“Sorry, I didn’t know you had company.” She looked at Erskine whose mouth curled up a little at one side in a knowing smirk.
“And that is my cue to leave.” He stood up. “I will see you in the morning, Steven.”
He squeezed Steve’s shoulder as he strode past, the bottle of schnapps in his hand as Katie moved to allow him through the doorway. He smiled once more before he shut the door behind him leaving the pair of them in the dim light of the bare sleeping room. Steve looked at Katie, inhaling deeply as even in the simple combat trousers and plain khaki t-shirt she was wearing she still looked effortlessly gorgeous. Her hair was pulled back off her face in a simple braid, and her skin was devoid of her usual make up, lips clear of their normal bright red paint. He realised with a slight swallow that this is what she’d look like at home, last thing at night and first thing in the morning…
He shifted a little on the side of his bed and watched as she walked over to take the spot Erskine had vacated.
“Are you supposed to be in here?” Steve finally spoke and she shrugged.
“Well, it probably wouldn’t be seen as appropriate if we were caught but…” She paused and gave a twitch of a smirk, “Steve, you’re gonna become a super soldier tomorrow, you can do what the hell you want!”
He inhaled a little sharply at her words as those inappropriate thoughts once more reared in his head and he felt his neck and cheeks grow warm.
“You’re adorable when you’re flustered.” She smiled.
“Thanks?” he shook his head before he glanced up at her. “So why are you here?”
“I wanted to see how you were.” She shrugged.
“Why?” he frowned.
“Why?” She looked at him, as if he’d just asked her the dumbest question on the planet. “Because I care about you Steve.”
“You care about me?” He repeated, the disbelief evident in his tone.
“Yeah.” She shrugged. “Of course I do.”
Steve watched her for a moment, and for the first time he caught a glimpse of something a little less composed under her normally cool and confident exterior. She was biting her lip, her teeth worrying at her plump bottom one as her right hand gently pulled at the knuckles of her left.
“You’re nervous.” He spoke suddenly and her eyes locked onto his, her throat bobbing as she swallowed. “What is it?”
“Nothing, just, well, this is a huge thing, Steve. A culmination of years of work from not just the SSR but Stark Industries, and Erskine.” She looked at him and shook her head, giving a little snort. “God I know that sounds pathetic compared to what you must be feeling.”
“Well, I’m a little twitchy, that’s fo’ sure, but I’m not scared scared, does that make sense?” He asked and she looked at him, a smile twisting on her lips.
“That’s because you’re ridiculously brave.”
“Or stupid.” He shrugged and she laughed, shaking her head.
“That’s one word I really wouldn’t use to describe you. I heard about the flag.”
“Yeah?” Steve chuckled a little and she grinned.
“Peggy said it was the best thing she’d ever seen. No one’s rendered Sergeant Duffy speechless before but he was pretty impressed that night at briefing.”
“It was just logic.” Steve flushed, rubbing at the back of his neck. “I’m pretty good at using my head. You haff’ to be when you’re as small and as weak as I am.”
“Don’t.” Katie shook her head.
“Don’t what?”
“Don’t say that. You’re not weak.”
At that Steve gave a snort. “Come on Doll, physically I’m a wreck. That’s one of the reasons Erskine picked me.” no sooner had he spoke, he realised what he’d said and his eyes widen at the involuntary use of the pet term but Katie merely laughed, arching her brow.
“Doll?”
“Sorry Ma’am.” He winced “Just slipped out.”
“I’m flattered.” She chuckled, before giving a sigh. “But back to what you just said, about why Erskine picked you. It isn’t just because you’re physically weak. It’s because that serum amplifies everything about you Steve…”
“Yeah, good becomes great, bad becomes worse.” Steve repeated the words Erskine had spoken to him not five minutes ago.
“Exactly.” Katie looked at him. “Erskine could have chosen any one of the guys that were in here with you, but he didn’t. He saw something in you, something that none of the others had.” She bit her lip and grinned as she leaned back slightly on the bed. “You’re a lion disguised as a lamb, Rogers.” “Oh, jeez!” He snorted shaking his head as she laughed. “Now you sound like Bucky, that’s the kinda nonsense that jerk would come out with.”
At that Katie wrinkled her nose. “In that case I take it back.”
“Thank you, now I feel great.” Steve retorted sarcastically and she laughed loudly, snorting as she did so. Her eyes widened and she clamped her hand over her mouth as Steve chuckled at her very un-lady like manner, his head falling forward as his own laughs rang out around the barracks. Eventually, Katie managed to stop, wiping her eyes and she shook her head.
“Sometimes I think it’s a blessing my parents are no longer around. My mom especially would be horrified if they could see how uncouth I act at times.”
“I dunno.” He shrugged. “If you were my daughter I’d be pretty proud of how you turned out.”
Katie smiled shyly at his compliment. “Thanks Stevie. I’m sure yours would feel the same.”
He didn’t ask how she knew his parents were both dead, it was fairly obvious she would have read his file. Instead he simply smiled and looked down at his hands “I like to think so. Although I’m pretty sure if my ma was still around and knew what I was doing tomorrow she’d have a coupla’ things to say about it. And a few slaps ready for the back ‘o ma head!”
“Tell me about it.” Katie chuckled, “If my dad could see me here, right now. Man, he’d be apoplectic. ‘The army is no place for a woman’!” She mimicked a deep voice before she shook her head. “Mind you, not like I’ve never heard it before.” She took a deep breath and looked at him. “You’ve never commented on it though.”
Steve blinked and then shook his head, shrugging. “That’s not how my ma brought me up. She was a single parent for all my life, anything a man could do in the house she did just as well. Besides, I know what it’s like to be told no because of what or who you are.”
“Ironically, who I am kinda got me through the door.” Katie shrugged, and when Steve looked at her pondering what she meant, she continued. “I was already working for the CIA when Howie told me that Colonel Phillips had approached him about working for the SSR. Naturally I wanted in but of course there were grumbles about it because I was a female. But my brother put his foot-down, said we came as a team, so they relented. Plus, Peggy, or Agent Thirteen was she was then, was already in deep cover working for Schmidt as a maid in his personal mansion.” She licked he lips and shrugged. “Colonel Phillips convinced the CIA to send me undercover as Peggy’s friend, a go-between if you will meaning there was less risk of her cover being blown.” She paused and glanced at him as Steve simply watched, rapt with attention. “Over the next few months we obtained details of Schmidt’s plan, what he was intending to do with Erskine’s serum and we knew we couldn’t possibly let the Nazi’s perfect it. Since we rescued Erskine, he and Howard have been working on finishing the formula, building the necessary equipment to ensure that it works. And Peggy and I were given our reward which was permission to serve in the allied army as SSR Agents.”
“Permission?” Steve deadpanned and Katie snorted.
“Yup.”
“Interesting reward.”
“I’d have taken whatever chance they gave to me.” She shrugged. “It’s all I ever wanted to do.”
Steve looked at her, the similarities in their stories were striking even despite their different backgrounds. But he still didn’t get it. She was beautiful, could have married well, just like most gals of her status, and his confusion must have shown as she cocked her head to one side and studied him for a moment before she spoke again.
“Don’t you think I was right to do so?”
“No, I mean, yes I do. I guess I’m just curious as to why you’d wanna join the army if you’re a beautiful dame.”
At that both her eyebrows raised and he cursed himself. He’d managed most of this conversation so far not to put his foot in his mouth and now, wham, kicked himself straight in the teeth. “Or a beautiful… a woman.” He floundered for words “An agent, not a dame! You are beautiful, but…”
“Why do you get so nervous when you speak to me?” Katie asked and Steve shook his head, giving a little huff as she called him out, groaning a little.
“Because up until the point I met you I think the longest conversation I ever had with a woman would have been with Mrs Barnes or Mrs Tomley.” he looked up at her, before he glanced back down at his hands. “Women aren’t exactly lining up to dance with a guy they might step on.”
“You must have danced?” Katie frowned, and she seemed genuinely surprised at what he was admitting.
“Well, asking a woman to dance always seems so terrifying.” Steve shrugged “And the past few years just didn’t seem to matter that much. Figured I’d wait.”
“For what?”
“The right partner.” He said, his eyes still focussed on his hands. He could feel Katie looking at him and eventually he raised his eyes to see her smiling softly at him.
“Well, I think all the girls in Brooklyn are dumbasses for not noticing you.” With her words she stood up and crossed to the bed he was sat on, taking a spot besides him. Steve swallowed, his entire body going rigid at the fact she was so close to him and she turned her face to look into his eyes. “You’re sweet”
He chuckled “You know I hear that a lot…you’re really sweet and all but…“
“Like I said,” she bumped her shoulder against his slightly, “dumbasses”
Steve looked at her before he felt his cheeks once more growing warm and he looked away, hastily, focussing on nothing in particular as her words echoed around his head. He didn’t know how to respond to praise, not in the sense in which she was giving it to him anyway.
“But seriously, why does me complimenting you make you so awkward, Steve?” She asked, and despite himself Steve’s head shot up to look at her once more, his mouth falling open at the fact that she’d unwittingly just read his mind.
He took a deep breath. “I guess I’m not used to it, that’s all.”
“I’m sorry if it makes you feel awkward.” She bit her bottom lip and looked down at her hands for a moment before she glanced back at him, her features soft, eyes alive in the dim light. “But I just, well, I like you Steve,” she whispered, “I mean, really like you.”
Steve felt his mouth go dry as her eyes flicked down to his lips, the same way they had at the Expo and he swallowed, the lump thick in his throat.
“I err, I…” He took a deep breath, the palms of his hands feeling clammy, those green emeralds sparkling as he looked at her, his mind willing him to summon the courage to say what he wanted to. And before he could chicken out, he blurted the words. “I like you too.”
Her cheeks flushed pink and she gently moved towards him, closing the already small distance between them as Steve reached up, with a shaky right hand, his actions completely instinctual. He gently cupped her cheek as his lips found hers and he kissed her, tentatively at first before soon the kiss was as deep as it had been at the Expo. His spare hand balled into a fist by his side as he was unsure exactly what to do with it until he felt Katie’s fingers gently work his away from his palm and she pulled his left arm towards her. Following her lead, he tentatively pressed his palm onto her hip as she shifted her weight slightly, wrapping her arms round his neck. She pulled him closer, the kiss growing deeper and Steve couldn’t help the soft little whimper that rolled in his throat.
As the involuntary noise filed the air between them he felt Katie’s lips smile against his and then, he was pitching forward as she fell slowly backwards, pulling him down with her as she sank onto the bunk. The movement came as surprise but he didn’t resist. With a shaky breath he paused for a moment, realising he had absolutely no idea what to do next other than run with it. So, after a second or so more deliberation, he went once more with his gut and crawled over her, resting his weight on his palms which he placed either side of her head before he dropped his face to hers and kissed her again. Her lips felt so soft against his, something he wasn’t sure he’d taken the time to appreciate before, or maybe it was all simply heightened by the fact he was lay over her, he had no idea. But what he did know was that when Katie placed both hands on his face, the pads of her finger tips cupping his jaw, it sent a jolt of electricity tingling all the way down his spine. She was the one to break away this time, breathing deeply as her head rest on his hard, army issued pillow, her eyes bouncing across both of his.
“You okay?” She asked and Steve nodded.
“Yeah, I err…” He swallowed and gave a little huff of shy laughter as he hung his head a little, peeking up a her shyly “I don’t know what I’m doing, or even if we should be doing it at all.”
“What do you mean if we should be doing it at all?”
“Well, we’re not…” He licked his lips “I mean, I should be taking you out, on a date or…well, at least doing things properly, not just…”
“Steve, we’re in the middle of a damned war.” Katie looked at him, cutting his protests off dead. “Every day could be your last, to hell with rules and being prim and proper.”
Steve had to concede she had a point, and as he looked into her eyes he could feel that last thread of his self-control starting to fray. Every inch of his body was on fire for her, he wanted nothing more than to kiss her stupid and feel her underneath him.
“Don’t over think it.” She muttered, her lips ghosting over his. “Just run with it.”
So he did. He kissed her hard, dropping to his elbows and pressing a little more of his weight on top of her, totally lost in her warmth and softness. He let out another soft sigh as he felt her shift underneath him and pulled away, turning his head so that his lips were inches from her neck as he recalled a part of a film he’d seen. He glanced up at her as she watched him, her pupils blown with a combination of lust and anticipation.
“Can I kiss you here?” He whispered softly.
“God, yes.” Katie sighed and he obliged, pressing his mouth to her neck. As he did so, his arms and hands moved downwards slowly, his fingers timidly resting on her hips as they gave a little jerk of their own accord, pushing up against him as she groaned slightly at the contact. Steve pulled back to stare at her again, her noise shocking him slightly, not sure what to do next but Katie wordlessly answered his silent question by tilting her hips up again, and this time it was him who moaned.
“Katie, I don’t want you to feel like you have to do this or do anything-”
“It’s okay,” she said, her voice low and slightly breathy as she looked at him, her eyes, locking onto his. She pushed her head upwards, mouth seeking his out as her hands slid under his t- shirt. He twitched under her touch as the sensation of her gently dragging her nails across his flat, soft stomach sent a spike of desire, like a red hot poker through his entire body. Katie grasped the bottom of his T-shirt and he hesitated, not sure if he really wanted her to see him topless, but she gave an impatient yank, taking the decision away from him and he held his arms up so she could remove it. Once he was free he glanced down to see Katie looking at his chest. He swallowed, as her eyes roved his various pox marks and scars and shivered as she let her hands wander, tracing a path down towards the top of his khaki pants. Her eyes met his and she sat up slightly pushing him back a little to allow herself enough room to reach down and pull her own T-shirt over her head.
Steve’s mouth was dry again as he glanced down at her chest, her hair falling around her shoulders, breasts spilling over the tops of the simple, black balcony cups of her bra and his groin twitched, the crotch of his pants now painfully tight.
“You’re beautiful…” he whispered gently, and then he kissed her again. Her fingers gently took his hands and she guided them onto her, sliding them up her rib cage to her chest and he froze as he found himself once more unsure of his next move. Swallowing hard against the lump that felt like it was obstructing his entire throat he began to gently squeeze and knead the soft flesh and black lace, before he stopped again to consider his next move.
“It’s okay,” she encouraged and with a nod, his hands slid into the cups, teasing her taught nipples with his thumbs, acting completely on instinct, listening and watching her as she groaned gently, arching her back, her reaction telling him he was doing something right as all the time his groin automatically bumped against hers. Katie buried her fingers in his hair, pulling hard, forcing his head back sharply and as she tugged he let out another low growl. When she let go he stared down at her to see her smirking, her pupils blown so wide there was hardly any green left.
“Don’t stop,” her hands moved down to grab at his lower back, pulling him back against her as she moved her knees, bending them so that his pelvis was flush with her, his cock hard through the thin fabric of his trousers. Taking her lead, Steve ground against her again, and again, and as he continued his movements, he became aware that the rhythm of his hips was becoming more frantic and their kisses were growing more desperate.
“More,” Katie moaned into his mouth, and with movements that were completely and utterly automatic he gave her what she wanted, moving his hips even faster, rubbing against her in ways that had her clutching at his back like her life depended on it. Steve had never felt anything like this in his life. It was so good, so right, in a way nothing had ever felt so right before. It should have been wrong, rutting up against someone fully clothed, but God, his head was a whirl of lust, desire, and he didn’t give a fuck about anything else at that moment other than her as she lay underneath him
As he pressed up against her, the tightening across his lower stomach that he’d only felt before when bringing himself off warned him he was fast approaching his release. He let out another groan as he felt his movements beginning to lose rhythm and he moved his lips to her neck, pressing a kiss to her skin. Katie moaned brokenly and his mouth continued pressing kisses to the spot on her neck which seemed to drive her wild. She tipped her head back as he gently nipped beneath her ear with his teeth and a few more sloppy grinds against her she was done, fingers wrapped around his hair, her, hips bucking upwards, almost violently. Her voice was broken as she gasped out “Stevie…”and it was the single most beautiful sound he’d ever heard in his life as it tumbled from her lips. Seeing and feeling her fall apart in his arms sent him over the edge right behind her in a pure surge of ecstasy, his head dropping to the crook of her shoulder and she gently ran her fingers through his hair.
There was no noise bar the sound of the crickets drifting in from the outside as they both lay, breathing deeply as they waited to regain control of their bodies, a light sheen of sweat beaded across Steve’s brow, wisps of his hair sticking to his skin. Finally mustering enough strength to move, he raised his head to look at her, to find her smiling as she pushed her head up, pressing a soft kiss to his lips.
“Wow,” she breathed and Steve let out a soft huff of laughter as he sat up to allow her the space to do the same, “you got game Soldier, I’ll give you that.”
Steve snorted and shook his head as he passed retrieved her t-shirt from the floor and passed it to her. “I’ve never done anything like that before.” He shrugged “I erm…”
“Let you into a secret.” She said gently, pulling her top over her head, flicking her hair back as she looked at him, her cheeks flushed with exertion. “Neither have I. Well, not to that extent anyway.”
“What?” Steve frowned “You’ve never…”
“You expecting me to be some kind of wild harlot or sumthin’ Stevie?” She teased as she stood up, Steve scrambling to his feet mimicking her.
“No I just, pretty girl like you, I thought…”
“What was it you said about waiting for the right partner?” She asked before she gently kissed him again. When she pulled away, her nose bumped his slightly and she pressed her forehead to his. “I best go. I don’t wanna but…” she glanced at the window and looked back at him. “I’ll see you tomorrow at the lab.”
“Sure.” Steve followed her a little before she stopped in the doorway and turned to smile at him once more.
“Whatever happens I want you to know that you’re already one of the bravest men I’ve ever met.” She took a deep breath. “You suddenly becoming all big and strong and…well, whatever, won’t change the fact that you already had the heart of a hero, certainly in my eyes anyway.”
And Steve could do nothing but smile as she left the room, closing the door behind her.

Paul Roberts: How he taught Harry Styles his gloom-busting Kindness moves
When the Harry Styles video for Treat People With Kindness was released it became an immediate hit. Its choreographer Paul Roberts had created dances for One Direction - though with 1D there was no Phoebe Waller-Bridge to consider. So how did Roberts combine the two stars' talents to create the energy-lift which people have been craving in the Covid gloom?
Styles' video for Treat People with Kindness came out on New Year's Day - though it was shot in London in February 2020.
Choreographer Roberts had worked often with Styles in the One Direction years. Roberts says the timing of the shoot, at the art deco Troxy in Stepney, east London, turned out to be fortuitous.
"We had a great time but we didn't know how lucky we were. Looking back it was about three weeks before the world started to burn. Maybe that's partly why people are loving it now - the video has such a carefree sense to it."
Roberts has had 20 years as one of the UK's most in-demand commercial choreographers. He created dances for the 2019 Spice World tour and has worked with everyone from Katy Perry to Sir Paul McCartney.
He devised work for the dance group BalletBoyz and, as well as stage work, he choreographed One Direction in videos such as Kiss You, Steal My Girl and Best Song Ever.
"So when Harry got in touch to say he wanted me for a new video it was a thrill. The only definite thing was it would be a song from the album Fine Line - but we didn't even know which song would be chosen."
With One Direction, Roberts spent six years working with a hugely successful boy band whose members insisted dance would never become a major part of the act.
'Waiting for 10 years'
Wasn't that a choreographer's nightmare?
"It was always really interesting working with One Direction. I knew very early on that there was a magic about them and I could see they had other skill-sets aside from being this very good-looking five-piece - and then four-piece - band.
"In personal moments you got to see them flourish. They'd mess around doing silly dance moves but I'd think, 'Actually if you wanted to dance really well you sure as hell could do it.'
"So when Harry contacted me and we spoke about doing a video with a lot of dance I was like, 'Well I've been waiting 10 years for this.'" Styles knew he wanted Phoebe Waller-Bridge to have an equal presence.
"I believe Harry went to see Phoebe in the West End when she had her success with Fleabag. They went out to dinner and got on really well. That's when Harry started to think how they could work together in some way."
Before shooting began there was a five-week rehearsal period - far more generous than most projects ever get. But a lot of the time Styles and Waller-Bridge weren't in the same room or indeed country.
"I was with Harry in a dance studio in London and we had all kinds of music to try out from modern alternative stuff to old school big band and Glenn Miller. We were exploring. Only on the third day did we begin to apply what we'd done specifically to the Treat People With Kindness track.
"Meanwhile Phoebe was in Canada working on the James Bond script. But fortunately I had a brilliant assistant on the project called Jared Hageman so Jared flew out to work with Phoebe. And eventually Harry needed to be in LA so I went there.
"He was amazingly devoted to the whole thing. He'd be shooting the Watermelon Sugar promo in Malibu and they'd wrap at 8pm but he'd get in a car and come to the studio and we'd rehearse moves until gone midnight."
Roberts says by then it was clear the choreography would at least nod to the Hollywood of an earlier age.
'Dance language'
"The directors Ben and Gabe Turner sent me a link to a black and white movie from 1943 called Stormy Weather. There is a justly famous sequence in it with the Nicholas Brothers, Fayard and Harold, called Jumpin' Jive.
"I think it's the greatest dance-sequence ever filmed and Gabe and Ben and Harry all wanted our video to have some of the same feel.
"I think in Harry's head he wanted to push himself to the absolute limit of what he was capable of. We were never talking about just an average soft-shoe shuffle.
"So the reality was that I and Jared would talk constantly and exchange material from thousands of miles part. And of course Phoebe and Harry would also pitch in ideas.
"We wanted to find a dance language that would take things as far as we could possibly go with Phoebe and Harry, without it becoming comedic.
"Actually my big worry was practical - that they'd both start out with massive energy but that as the weeks progressed you'd have these two incredibly busy people with no time for everything needed to make the project special. But neither would give up, not for a moment."
Nostalgia for better times
He says it was important the dancing had a contemporary edge as well. "Harry and Phoebe are modern artists and very intelligent. They're fashion forward-thinking.
"I find that once you've stopped giving artists their steps it's often quite nice to step back and just watch how they interpret the music. Sometimes little gems can be grabbed and put into the mix.
"It was discovered very early on that both Harry and Phoebe had huge potential. The delight came from their energy combined with the talent of the film-makers plus the extended period of time we had to rehearse.
"I work in a world where budgets have shrunk considerably so it was a big investment for managements and Harry's label."
Roberts remembers the two stars finally came together for little more than the last week of the project, including the shoot. But there was still time to bring in a ballet dancer to give guidance on "port de bras" - how to hold your shoulders or extend an arm gracefully.
"Harry and Phoebe are both decent and generous beings. So we all kept it fun, despite the blood, sweat and tears which had gone into the preparation.
"When finally we were together they could layer on little side-eyed glances or maybe some tiny movement of the face which the camera would pick up. Above all we wanted a sense of style [no pun intended] and panache."
He says the fact most of us feel a real lack of either style or panache in our lives has given Treat People With Kindness an impact as a video it might not otherwise have had.
"The whole thing has a nostalgia for a time where you could be in a club and socialise with friends with no social distancing. I think the chemistry Harry and Phoebe have together just oozes joy. And for most people joy is in short supply."

Packmates
So I've been needing to do some Flash Fiction stuff for my writing class recently and I've had this original idea in my head for a long while at this point. It was HEAVILY inspired by Lera Lynn's "Wolf Like Me" (thanks again Delta for showing me this album) and it's one of the few things I feel REAL proud putting out! So woe! Gay and depressed werewolves be upon ye!
“The Blood Moon draws near.”
“I’m ready.”
“You have said so often this night.”
“I’m aware.”
“Why do you repeat those words so?”
“Is ‘because you asked’ not the right choice?”
“There is a lack of conviction in your voice.”
“I’m tired, you know that by now.”
“But what is it you refer to?”
“I don’t know what you want me to say.”
“Is it the exhaustion that comes from a great hunt, one that seeps through your limbs and gives you aches that spare your quarter?”
“Yeah, I guess.”
“Or is it the dreariness of fog that clouds your mind, seeps your vitality drop by drop until naught an ounce of bloodlust remains?”
“That too, I suppose.”
“...Your conviction wavers.”
“Can it not be both?”
“Exhaustion, though inconvenient, is a natural calling deep within oneself. It is a hunter’s blessing in disguise, as one cannot pursue their prey if not at full strength. Dreariness is the fatigue of the soul, an infestation of hopelessness. Neither are permanent, though the latter plagues those inflicted with insidious thoughts.”
“You didn’t answer my question.”
“...no, I did not.”
“...”
“...Do you wish to rest before the hour comes?”
“Wouldn’t that be pointless? Considering ‘the gift’ and all that I’m going to get?”
“Perhaps, but have you not gone to great lengths to let me join in pointless activities with you over these long years?”
“.....well, can’t argue with that I guess.”
“Take reprieve in my fur, the wind bares its frost-bitten teeth this deep in the woods.”
“Oh yeah, I guess this’ll be the last chance we really get to do it like this huh?”
“Should you join us there shall be many chances. But yes, if you wish, this will be the last.”
“Yeah, thanks Katey.”
“...”
“...”
“...”
“...Do you remember what it’s like?”
“Hm?”
“Without fur, I mean. Do you remember what it feels like?”
“What thought led to this question?”
“I dunno, just…”
“...Echoes of memories come and pass, sensations of touch that are not there.”
“Do you miss it at all?”
“My memories have not faded, Jakie. Though they ebb and flow from my mind, they remain. I still remember it all.”
“Yeah, you’ve said that many times.”
“...I do remember that time long ago, when I did not bear this fur or wear these claws. I remember the cold that stung our skin, the scrapes and cuts that adorned our hairless hands.”
“Do you only remember the bad things? Or have those ebbed from your mind as well?”
“I recall them as well, Jackie. The feeling of grass pricking against our bare feet as we ran through these woods as one. The currents brushing against us as we fought the tides of the sea. I especially remember that day you had fallen into a gardener’s crop and had me accompany you in that mess you created.”
“Pfft, really now? That’s one of the things you still remember?”
“Though my mind has changed, my memories have not.”
“.....and?”
“While a part of me does reminisce of those days back home, this change of mine has given me new blessings. My claws assure me in the face of danger, my fur assures me in the face of nature. In my life, this is one of the few times I feel secure in myself.”
“Do you… feel better though? Happier? Will I feel...?”
“.........I cannot say.”
“...”
“...” “...”
“......my apologies. I have… ruined the mood, as I believe you phrase it.”
“No, no it’s okay… actually, now that I think about it, when did you first start getting so poetic?”
“Pardon me?”
“This whole... thing where you talk really fancy and in metaphors. I recognized you starting a while ago, but did you have to read through a dictionary? Or does transforming include suddenly becoming shakespearean?”
“I don’t believe that’s the right term, but yes, to my knowledge this happened gradually since I was given this gift.”
“So then, do you think when I transform tonight the same thing will happen to me? Like you bite me then I have all of medieval theater beamed into my head? Will I be The Shakespeare of Wolves?”
“It is likely, though I will not deny, it would be a shock. I have grown quite fond of the way you speak, compared to my packmates. It is akin to, say, witnessing a fish leap from a flowing stream.”
“You did that one on purpose, didn’t you?!”
“Perhaps I did, perhaps not~"
“Oooh you better watch out, when I join the pack I’m going to destroy you in the weekly poetry slams!”
“Heh, we do not have ‘slams of poetry’ where I will go. Most of our focus is turned to the hunt, though perhaps you could make a fine diplomat between packs.”
“Well, maybe I could bring poetry slams to the pack. We both could! You didn’t go to many but you still know what they’re like, what’s stopping us?”
“That would be… the moon. I do not believe recreation would become much of a priority to you once you shift tonight. Especially for you, considering the ritual.”
“Oh. Yeah, right.”
“...”
“.......”
“...........”
“...you can still leave Jakie.”
“You know I can’t.”
“And why is that?”
“You know why.”
“What of August, who had assisted us in Maplecrest? Or your bloodmate, here in Bloomfield?”
“It’s not me needing somewhere to go Kate. I know that they’d both welcome me back.”
“Then why do you persi-”
“I thought you said your memories were all still there.”
“...I have not forgotten our promise, Jakie.”
“Then you have your answer. I didn’t leave you back then, I’m not leaving you here.”
“...Jakie.”
“Don’t.”
“I am grateful for your assistance all these years, for your companionship. You have offered me comfort, companionship and assistance without question.”
“I said stop, Katie.”
“I shall always be grateful, however you must ask yourself whether or not you should continue to uphold these vows. If the Katie you loved--”
“What’s your problem?! I thought the whole thing with you is that you want to bite people, change people!”
“We do not offer this gift to all those we encounter. Only those who we find--”
“‘A spark of devotion,’ yeah I get it you’ve said that thousands of times already! So then why is it only with me you try to talk someone out of it?!”
“Beca-”
“And don’t say lack of conviction. I said I’ve wanted this for months now, that’s the whole reason we’re here!”
“...............”
“Well?!”
“I… ponder if you would believe me.”
“Spit it out.”
“...because I have always seen you as my packmate.”
“..............”
“...since my mind has changed, I have gained new desires. Whatever old ties I had have long been cut. Yet despite my change you’ve been by my side. My fur warms my body--you have warmed my soul, and that sensation shall never fade.”
“...you didn’t answer me.”
“......Should you accept my gift tonight you shall change eternally. Your conviction here lies with me, but should you accept our gift your soul will be tied to the hunt. I do not wish for you to change with your mind lingering on regrets of what could have been. I respect you as a packmate, Jakie. I wish for your choice to be true.”
“Don’t you get it? What I want is to be with you! You’re my friend, I’ve helped you all this time, I love you!”
“But through these years, have you been happy?”
“..........”
“You say this is your duty, it may be what you desire. But protecting me, has it made you happy? Can you look upon the fields of missed opportunities that have passed without a hint of longing?”
“............”
“I have never needed protection, you know as well as I. These past years of devotion, it has helped you survive. But what I yearn for is for you to live. Abandoning your own self… Do you believe you will be happy then?”
“...........”
“...........”
“.......god damn it. You never made things easy, did you?”
“I am who I am now, Jakie. I cannot give you more than that.”
“........I don’t want to leave you. I don’t even know if I can. I’ve spent so long helping you I don’t know if I… know anything else. What would I even do?”
“I… do not know. But I have seen your conviction these past years--you have several paths ahead of you. Whatever you may choose, I have faith in you. You shall always be my packmate.”
“.......yeah. Yeah…. Yeah.”
“..........”
“...............”
“...the Blood Moon has nearly reached its peak.”
“.......could we just sit together, just for a bit longer?”
“Of course.”
“....thank you.”
“.........”
“.........”
“.........”
“.........I love you, Katie.”
“I love you too, Jakie.”

Once again, huge thanks to my beta readers @southerngracela and @icanfeelastormbrewing
Any mistakes are my own. I’ll probably spot them once posted but, whatever!
SSR Masterlist // WIYPT Masterlist
At Camp Lehigh the new recruits were met by their Sergeant, who escorted them to their quarters. There it was explained to them that as they were part of the Strategic Science Reserve, this was a separate unit from the rest of the army training at the base, but more would become clear in an hour or so when they reported for exercise.
Here they once more lined up, Steve taking his place in between 2 men whose names he couldn’t remember and they stood, waiting.
“Recruits, attention!” A voice called and Steve felt his mouth drop open, because he knew the owner of said voice. “Gentlemen, I’m Agent Stark, this is Agent Carter.” He turned to face Katie as she began walking down the line, dressed in a sharp army uniform with another woman at her side and a man behind them both clutching a box which contained clip files. As she reached Steve, Katie stopped and looked at him, giving him a bashful, almost apologetic smile as the other woman continued to walk.
And wait. Her surname was Stark? As in, Howard Stark? Was that her husband? Had he kissed a married woman? Fuck… he swallowed his worry down and averted his eyes as Katie passed down the line following Agent Carter, their eyes flicking to each man in turn.
“We supervise all operations for this division.” Agent Carter spoke in a strong British accent before she was interrupted.
“What’s with the accent, Queen Victoria?” a man down the line stated rather obnoxiously, causing Agent Carter to stop.
Steve gave a little huff of laughter, as did the man to his right as Katie stood up, not a hair out of place and smoothed down her jacket and skirt as Hodge rose to his feet.
He will be the first in a new breed of super-soldiers…”
Super-Soldiers? The end of the week? That was…5 days away!
“And they, will personally escort Adolf Hitler to the gates of Hell.”
Steve could hear a few murmurs down the line as some of the recruits began to exchange glances.
“Did I ask any of you to talk?” Phillips barked and silence fell once more. “The man we select will go through a procedure.” He continued “An experimental procedure that, if successful, will significantly enhance his physical stature, amplifying all his qualities and abilities. This is not something we take lightly. It is for this reason that you will be assessed not just on your current physical abilities but your mental capacity and it won’t be easy. So if any of you are having second thoughts…” he once more paused at Steve who, as before, ignored him “Speak now or forever hold your peace.”
No one made a sound.
Whilst Steve didn’t have much time to think about Katie for the rest of the day as most of his energy was taken by keeping up with the afternoon’s exercise, he found himself with plenty of time to think about her over dinner.
He headed down the dirt path, hands in his baggy uniform pockets when he heard Katie shouting to him. Taking a deep breath, he stopped, and turned to face her, saluting.
“Agent Stark…”
“Woah, at ease, we ain’t on parade now!” she shook her head.
“Yes Ma’am” he dropped his arm but kept it firmly by his side, still standing to attention, focussing on a spot slightly behind her.”
“What’s with the Ma’am?” she frowned but Steve ignored her question. She frowned a little, cocking her head to one side “Are you angry at me?” Steve’s eyes flicked to hers for a second and he swallowed looking away causing her to sigh “Steve, look…”
“You lied to me.” He blurted out, his eyes returning to hers and she frowned.
“No, I just didn’t tell you my full story.” She shrugged, lamely.
“Where I come from that’s called lying.”
“Oh come on Steve, it’s not like you actually asked what I did for a living!”
“I asked if ya worked for Howard Stark.” He folded his arms “And you said you did.”
“Well, I do, sorta…”
“Oh, is that as well as sorta being married to him?”
“Married?” Katie’s eyes narrowed before they widened again and she grinned “What, you think…oh my God Steve!” she let out a laugh.
“Sorry, I didn’t know.” He spoke quietly. “Why didn’t you tell me?”
“Tell you what?”
“That you were related? Or what it is that you actually do.”
“Because I didn’t know I was supposed to.” she looked at him “Plus, I kinda liked not being Agent Katie Stark for a moment and just being, I dunno, some regular girl.”
Steve looked at her again before he glanced away, not quite sure what had come over him. He’d literally never had a conversation with a woman that lasted longer than a few minutes, if that, and here he was for the second time with her just rolling with it, and not just that, he was actually being a little rude. His ma would not be happy.
“I’m sorry.” He offered, his manner contrite “I guess it was just a shock, that’s all.”
Touche.”
“Can I ask you something?” feeling emboldened he asked his question hastily, before he chickened out.
“Not especially.” He popped a shoulder “Just kinda figured that if you knew you’d be seeing me each day, you wouldn’t have…you know…”
“Kissed you?”
“Yeah, that.” Steve felt the heat rise in his neck as he thought back to that moment. He ran his hand through his hair in a nervous fashion “I mean I know you probably did it because you either felt kinda sorry for me or like you hadda thank me but this has gotta be awkward for you right? Seeing me every day as a reminder, but it’s not like I told anyone so-“
“Woah, woah, stop!” Katie shook her head, stepping towards him “Steve, I don’t care who you told. I’m not embarrassed if that’s what you think.”
“You’re not?”
“No!” Katie looked at him like he was stupid “I didn’t kiss you because I felt sorry for you or because I felt I owed you, I kissed you because I wanted to.”
“You wanted to.” Steve looked at her, not quite sure if he believed her or not.
“Is that so hard to comprehend?”
“Frankly, yes!” he snorted “I mean, look at ya. You’re…” he gestured with his hand towards her “And I’m…”
“Well lucky for you I’m not a shallow bimbo then isn’t it?” She said, an air of annoyance in her tone. “I might be a Stark, and yes, I’m privileged but that means I’m expected to act a certain way with a certain type of man from a certain type of background.
God he felt so out of place, the one thing he’d wanted to do and now he was here he felt as small and as insignificant as he had ever felt.
Long was an understatement.
By Monday morning, Steve had done 5 different physical assault courses, various runs loaded with equipment, taken part in a number of logic puzzles, had a one on one interview with Colonel Phillips, completed written, arithmetic and geography tests and been subject to another medical examination. He was now on a fuck knows how many miles drill run, being barked at once more by Sergeant Duffy.
“Pick up the pace, ladies! Let’s go!” The drill Sergeant barked. Steve was running as fast as he could, but still lagged 10 or 15 yards behind the main formation of the group.
Finally Steve could catch his breath.
“Nobody’s got that flag in 17 years!” he shook his head “Now fall back into line!
Erskine put his hand on her shoulder and shook his head gently and she rolled her eyes, turning away and looking in his direction.
“Get away!” he yelled, waving his arm as Agent Carter ran towards him “Get back!”
He remained curled in on himself, waiting and waiting but nothing happened. Eventually he looked up, to see everyone was slowly starting to go back to normal and he sat up, frowning a little, his mouth hanging slightly open.
“It was a dummy grenade. All clear. Back in formation.” someone said as Steve glanced first at Agent Carter then over to Phillips and Erskine and finally Agent Stark.
Erskine beamed at Steve before he turned to follow Phillips away, patting Katie’s shoulder as he left.
“Private Rogers…” Katie spoke, her eyes soft as she glanced at him. “With me.”
“Congratulations Steve… you’re gonna become our first Super Soldier.”
Steve blinked, swallowed and then shook his head “Is this a joke?”
“No.” Katie shook her head “I can assure you this is deadly serious.” She took a deep breath and turned to walk down the track to her right.
“I suspect on his way to Brooklyn to meet Howie at the SSR lab.” Katie replied “He’ll be back later so you can talk to him then.”
“The lab’s in Brooklyn?” the surprise evident in Steve’s voice as Katie led him to one of the large green dome like structures that housed the offices “So that’s why you were there.”
Katie grinned “Not just a pretty face, are ya?” She stood still, snapping to attention and saluted to the guard on the door who immediately saluted back.
“Agent Stark” he greeted as he stepped to his right, opening the door for them both to step into.
“Shut the door.” Phillips barked and Steve scrambled to do as he was told before he drew himself up tall and saluted his superior “At ease Rogers.”
“One of these days Agent Stark, that mouth is gonna get you into trouble.”
“I look forward to it.” She replied.
Katie took a deep breath and shrugged “On the animal test subjects we’ve used, yeah but I’m not gonna lie to you Steve, other than a Nazi scientist named Johan Schmidt the serum hasn’t been tested on any human subject.”
Steve thought on her words for a moment, his eyes still locked onto hers as she licked her lips, offering him nothing but a shrug “In simple terms, we don’t know if it’s gonna work or not. So you need to think carefully.”
“When is it gonna happen?”
“The procedure will take place tomorrow morning.” Agent Carter spoke. “So you have little over 14 hours.”
“So despite what Agent Stark says…” Phillips spoke, shooting Katie a look which she met with an equally annoyed one of her own, “There’s no time for contemplation.”
“There’s 14 hours…” Katie began to protest.
Steve’s eyes turned back to Phillips who spoke “If you want out, now is the time to speak up so we can find someone else. Are you in, Rogers, because if you are, after this meeting and you leave this room, there’s no going back.”
“But I’ve only had like 5 days of basic training.” Steve frowned “Is that going to be enough?”
“We’re on a schedule.” Phillips shrugged, “It’s going to have to be.”
“Your basic training, or lack thereof, shouldn’t be a problem.” Peggy shook her head “Our intention is to continue to train you up fully so that you’re prepared to lead the others who we…convert.”
“You can do what the hell you want within reason.” Phillips shrugged “But you can’t leave base, can’t risk anything happening to you. Not now.”
“By the time you get back to your barracks, everyone else will have packed up and left so I suggest you make the most of the peace and quiet.” Agent Carter smiled “Because you’re going to be pretty busy from Tomorrow onwards.”
Steve nodded to show he understood and then he was dismissed. Saluting to Phillips he turned to leave the room, followed by Katie who herself was leaving to see her brother.
“Is there anything in particular you’d like to eat tonight?” she asked him as they left the building “And I don’t mean any of the shit they serve in the mess.”
Steve looked up “I suppose some of Mrs Tromley’s home made preserve is out of the question?”
“Leave it with me.” She smiled and Steve looked at her for a second before he took a deep breath.
“Look, Agent- Katie, I err, wanted to apologise for my outburst the other night. I was rude and…”
“It’s okay, I don’t hold a grudge.” She paused and turned to face him “Alright that’s a lie, I do.
Katie came through with the preserve, a small jar along with a crusty cob of bread was waiting in his bunk later that evening when he returned from the bathroom cabin. He ate sat on his bed, mulling everything over in his mind before he stood up and decided to go for a walk. He found a nice quiet spot hidden behind one of the munition sheds and sat to draw a while, a particularly gnarled old tree the target of his attention.
As he re-read the same sentence he’d been looking at for the last 10 minutes, there was a knock at the door which made him jump slightly and he turned to look over his left shoulder as Dr Erskine stood in the doorway, a bottle and two glasses in his hand.
And he says, ‘You’” Erskine pointed to emphasise his point “He says, ‘You will make us strong.’ Well, I am not interested.” Erskine shook his head as he placed the bottle on the floor between his feet, Steve’s eyes following his movements “So he sends the head of HYDRA, his research division.
“Thanks.” Steve said, frowning slightly “I think.” He glanced at Erskine who smiled at him, and then waved in the direction of the two glasses on the trunk at the foot of the bed.
Steve took a deep breath, holding his glass up and he allowed that fleeting warmth of pride spread across his chest, just for a second, as he smiled “To the little guys.”
“No! I don’t have procedure tomorrow.” Erskine gestured towards himself “Drink it after? I drink it now.”
Steve gave a small smile as the doctor knocked back the clear liquid in the glass and was just about to speak to tease him a little about making sure he had a clear head for the morning, when there was another knock on the door. Steve’s head turned to look as Katie stepped inside the dorm, smiling.
“Sorry, I didn’t know you had company.” She looked at Erskine whose mouth curled up a little at one side in a knowing smirk.
“And that is my cue to leave.” He stood up. “I will see you in the morning Steven.”
“Well, it probably wouldn’t be seen as appropriate if we were caught but…” She paused and gave a twitch of a smirk. “Steve, you’re gonna become a super soldier tomorrow, you can do what the hell you want!”
He inhaled a little sharply at her words as those inappropriate thoughts once more reared in his head and he felt his neck and cheeks grow warm.
“You’re adorable when you’re flustered.” She smiled.
“Thanks?” he shook his head before he glanced up at her “So why are you here?”
“Of course I do.” Steve watched her for a moment, and for the first time he caught a glimpse of something a little less composed under her normally cool and confident exterior. She was biting her lip, her teeth worrying at her plump bottom one as her right hand gently pulled at the knuckles of her left.
“You’re nervous.” He spoke suddenly and her eyes locked onto his, her throat bobbing as she swallowed. “What is it?”
“Nothing, just…well, this is a huge thing, Steve.
“It was just logic” Steve flushed, rubbing at the back of his neck.
“I’m flattered.” She chuckled, before giving a sigh “But back to what you just said, about why Erskine picked you.
He saw something in you, something that none of the others had.” She bit her lip and grinned as she leaned back slightly on the bed “You’re a lion disguised as a lamb, Rogers.” “Oh, jeez…” he snorted shaking his head as she laughed “Now you sound like Bucky, that’s the kinda nonsense that jerk would come out with.”
At that Katie wrinkled her nose “In that case I take it back.”
“I dunno.” He shrugged “If you were my daughter I’d be pretty proud of how you turned out.”
Katie smiled shyly at his compliment “Thanks Stevie.
‘The army is no place for a woman’” she mimicked a deep voice before she shook her head “Mind you, not like I’ve never heard it before.” She took a deep breath and looked at him “You’ve never commented on it though.”
Steve blinked and then shook his head, shrugging “That’s not how my ma brought me up. She was a single parent for all my life, anything a man could do in the house she did just as well. Besides, I know what it’s like to be told no because of what or who you are.”
“Ironically who I am kinda got me through the door.” She said, and when Steve looked at her pondering what she meant, she continued “I was already working for the CIA when Howie told me that Colonel Phillips had approached him about working for the SSR. Naturally I wanted in but of course there were grumbles about it because I was a female. But my brother put his foot-down, said we came as a team, so they relented. Plus, Peggy, or Agent 13 was she was then, was already in deep cover working for Schmidt as a maid in his personal mansion.” She licked he lips and shrugged “Colonel Phillips convinced the CIA to send me undercover as Peggy’s friend, a go-between if you will meaning there was less risk of her cover being blown.” She paused and glanced at him as Steve simply watched, rapt with attention.
“I’d have taken whatever chance they gave to me.” She shrugged “It’s all I ever wanted to do.”
Steve looked at her, the similarities in their stories were striking even despite their different backgrounds. But he still didn’t get it. She was beautiful, could have married well, just like most gals of her status…and his confusion must have shown as she cocked her head to one side and studied him for a moment before she spoke again.
He chuckled “You know I hear that a lot…you’re really sweet and all but…“
“Like I said…”she bumped her shoulder against his slightly, “Dumbasses”
Steve looked at her before he felt his cheeks once more growing warm and he looked away, hastily, focussing on nothing in particular as her words echoed around his head. He didn’t know how to respond to praise, not in the sense in which she was giving it to him anyway.
“But seriously, why does me complimenting you make you so awkward Steve?” she asked, and despite himself Steve’s head shot up to look at her once more, his mouth falling open at the fact that she’d unwittingly just read his mind.
He took a deep breath “I guess I’m not used to it, that’s all.”
“I’m sorry if it makes you feel awkward.” She bit her bottom lip and looked down at her hands for a moment before she glanced back at him, her features soft, eyes alive in the dim light. “But I just, well, I like you Steve.” she whispered, “I mean, really like you.”
The movement came as a not-entirely unwelcome surprise to Steve and he didn’t resist.
“Don’t over think it.” She muttered, her lips ghosting over his “Just run with it.”
“Doll, I don’t want you to feel like you have to do this or do anything-”
“It’s okay Steve,” she said, her voice low and slightly breathy as she looked at him, her eyes, locking onto his.
“It’s okay…” she encouraged and with a nod, his hands slid into the cups, teasing her taught nipples with his thumbs, acting completely on instinct, listening and watching her as she groaned gently, arching her back, her reaction telling him he was doing something right as all the time his groin automatically bumped against hers. Katie buried her fingers in his hair, pulling hard, forcing his head back sharply and as she tugged he let out another low growl. When she let go he stared down at her to see her smirking, her pupils blown so wide there was hardly any green left.
“Don’t stop…” her hands moved down to grab at his lower back, pulling him back against her as she moved her knees, bending them so that his pelvis was flush with her, his cock hard through the thin fabric of his trousers. Taking her lead, Steve ground against her again, and again, and as he continued his movements be became aware that the rhythm of his hips was becoming more frantic and their kisses were growing more desperate.
He let out another groan as he felt his movements beginning to lose rhythm and he moved his lips to her neck, pressing a kiss to her skin as he spoke into her ear. “Katie, I’m close.” He breathed out “You almost there? Tell me your close Doll, please?”
He needn’t have worried, at his words Katie moaned brokenly and nodded and his mouth fell to that spot on her neck which seemed to drive her wild.
“Wow…” she breathed and Steve let out a soft huff of laughter as he sat up to allow her the space to do the same. “You got game Soldier, I’ll give you that.”
“Neither have I.”
“I best go. I don’t wanna but…” she glanced at the window and looked back at him “I’ll see you tomorrow at the lab.”
“Sure.” Steve followed her a little before she stopped in the doorway and turned to smile at him once more.
“Whatever happens I want you to know that you’re already one of the bravest men I’ve ever met.” She took a deep breath “You suddenly becoming all big and strong and…well, whatever, won’t change the fact that you already had the heart of a hero, certainly in my eyes anyway.”
And Steve could do nothing but smile as she left the room, closing the door behind her.

Tough
Summary: With Sam called away on an extraction mission, Bucky fills in for him at the library with you, leading to a moment of bonding with one of the young patrons.
Features: Fluffy goodness; Bucky feeling insecure; Reader and Sam conspiring
Prompt: Face painting
Pairing: Sam Wilson/Bucky Barnes/Reader
Notes: Day 8 of the OTP challenge! Like I said yesterday, the fics all play off one another, so going out of order is a no no for me
Word Count: 1357
Thursdays were one of your favorite days. You’d go off compound to the local library and host an activity with the kids. Walking into the library with Bucky, you took a deep breath. The smell of old books hit you immediately. It was one of your favorite smells. It reminded you of childhood.
As you entered, Maeve waved to you, her greying hair pulled up in a tight bun with strands framing her face.
“Hello dear, everything is all ready for you,” she said with a smile. You were excited. Today’s activities included creating their own autumn trees with construction paper and some seasonal face painting. Bucky had accompanied you this week. Sam had been called away early that morning to assist on an extraction on a mission that had gone south. The agents weren’t in mortal peril, but they’d have an embarrassing story coming back. Sam had gone with Steve to retrieve the agents.
Usually, it was Sam who came with you to the library. It was a favorite thing of his to do, a break from all of the things that demanded his attention in the day to day. Bucky opted to stay behind, spending time with Alpine or doing yard work. But today, he had surprised you in asking if he could go in place of Sam.
“You good, Buck?” you asked, glancing at him. He wore his jacket and kept a glove on his metal hand. He was fidgeting slightly.
“I’m fine doll,” he said.
“Do you want to do the activity with them or do you want to read to them?” you asked him. He paused for a moment.
“I’d like to read,” he said, coming to a decision. You nodded at him. He helped you set up the crafts table as the children started to arrive. You saw the looks from some of the parents, but a well placed glare from you had them keeping their mouths shut. You introduced Bucky to the kids and took a seat to watch and listen to him tell a story about the autumn leaves.
You noticed one little girl whose attention was firmly on Bucky’s left arm. Though it was covered, she had an intense stare before glancing back at her own arm. You had an inkling of an idea of what was up. Katie had started coming to the library on Thursdays three months prior, not long after she was given an all clear from her doctors. She had lost her arm in an accident and had recently gotten a prosthetic. You knew from talking to her mother that she was still struggling some days.
When storytime ended, you and Bucky herded the children over to the tables where glue sticks were set out with construction paper and some pre-cut trees. You could see Bucky shifting in his jacket and fiddling with his glove. The library had the heat cranked up that day, to counter the chill that had set in outside.
“You know you can take off the jacket,” you murmured. He looked at you and shook his head.
“It’ll scare them,” he argued. You looked at him, raising an eyebrow.
“Buck. They’re six year olds. They’ll think it’s the coolest thing they’ve ever seen,” you replied. He gave you a look that said it all. He was uncertain, anxious, and above all uncomfortable. You backed off of the idea, squeezing his right hand before going to help one of the children. Out of the corner of your eye, you saw Katie make the decision to approach him.
“Mr. Bucky, can you help me?” the girl asked. Bucky seemed startled that any of them would ask him for help, but he nodded. She sat down beside him and he would hand her what she asked for, helping her cut out new shapes of leaves for her tree. She had chosen to go with some non-traditional autumn colors, something that put a smile on Bucky’s face.
“Mr. Bucky, why do you wear a glove on your hand? We’re inside, silly,” Katie said suddenly. Bucky froze. How did he make this child friendly? He cast a look your way but you were preoccupied at the moment with helping a younger child with the glue. He took a deep breath. He could do this.
“I have a prosthetic arm and don’t want to scare anyone,” he said once he settled on it. Katie’s eyes lit up. She knew it! Her older brother loved the Avengers and had told her there was one who lost an arm like her.
“That’s so cool! I do too! Wanna see?” she asked. Bucky had no time to respond before the girl was unzipping the hooded sweatshirt she wore and pulled it off to show the t-shirt beneath it. Bucky glanced at the arm. It wasn’t like his, no, but it was clearly advanced, likely one of Stark’s new line.
“Can I see yours?” she asked. He heard a gasp from who he assumed was Katie’s mother.
“Katherine Winifred,” the woman scolded. Bucky’s heart twinged at her middle name. His mother’s name was still one of those things that made him long for a time long since passed.
“It’s alright ma’am,” Bucky replied. He slowly took the glove and his jacket off, revealing his metal arm. Katie looked at it in awe.
“Wow,” she said. After that, Katie refused to leave his side, even for the face painting. Between the two of you, you were the one more skilled in the art of face painting than Bucky, but Katie insisted.
“I want a spider,” she said.
“A spider?” Bucky asked.
“A Black Widow. Like the Avenger! I wanna be like her when I grow up!” Katie exclaimed. Bucky chuckled. He made a note to tell Natasha about that later, about her little fan, as he set about painting the spider.
When all was said and done, the children all left with smiles upon their faces. You and Bucky on the other hand were left with cleanup. You hadn’t gotten a good look at him since you had broke for activities and you could barely contain your giggles when you did.
There, on Bucky’s cheek, was what looked to be an attempt at a spider. You couldn’t help the few giggles that escaped.
“What? I think it makes me look tough, don’t you?” Bucky asked, a smile on his face.
“Oh yes. The toughest. The bad guys will quiver before you pleading for mercy when they see you roll up with that,” you teased. Bucky pulled you into a quick kiss, before continuing the cleanup.
While he was preoccupied, you slid your phone out of your pocket, taking a few more discreet photos before sending them to Sam.
You: Operation Smiles was a success. He even felt comfortable enough to take off the jacket.
Sam: I told you he’d be fine. He just needed the opportunity to present itself.
You: When are you due back?
Sam: Don’t want to talk about it. Steve insisted he could handle this alone but...the rookies really did a number...their commanding officer is wasted. We should be back by mid-morning. Love you
You: Love you too
Across the room, Bucky took his own phone out, glancing at the lock screen before opening it. It was a photo of you, him, and Sam that Wanda had taken and sent to him. The three of you, asleep on that front porch swing toward the end of summer. Bucky opened up the text app and found Sam’s name.
Bucky: Today went well. Thanks for suggesting it to me. Maybe next week I’ll go with you both?
Sam: Sounds like a plan to me. You can come with us anytime
Bucky: I’ll hold you to it
Bucky: I love you
Sam: I love you too.
Sam: Should be back by mid-morning tomorrow. I expect cuddles. This is a mess and I’m done
Bucky: We’ll see about the cuddles. Our girl has big plans for tomorrow
Sam: Should I be scared?
Sam: Bucky?
Sam: I’m going to assume the answer to that is a yes. Goodnight, I love you

Many of you are literal bébés so you may not remember the time Taylor played herself and not understand why homegal needed The Squad and Kar.
The year was 2013. The setting was the Golden Globe ceremony. Tina Fey and Amy Poehler were hosting. They both had successful shows on networks at the time. Tina had been the first female Head Writer of SNL. They were powerful and iconic. Taylor was, at the time, 23 and famous for an ever changing string of boy toys whom she supposedly dragged in country songs. When presenting the award for Mr Golden Globe (a nepotistic thingie they give the child of celeb(s), the following exchange took place:
Fey: You know what Taylor Swift? You stay away from Michael J Fox’s son.
Poehler: Or go for it...
Fey: No, she needs some me-time to learn about herself.
It wasn’t a particularly rough joke tbh. But Taylor, petty kween that she is, took it personally and decided to offer a comeback. In a March 2013 interview with Vanity Fair, she said: “You know, Katie Couric is one of my favorite people, because she said to me she had heard a quote that she loved, that said, ‘There’s a special place in hell for women who don’t help other women.”
Now this was a BAD LOOK because Amy and Tina had both done far more to promote women than 23 year old Taylor. They’d both broken through actual barriers. And they were/are famous for THEIR FEMALE FRIENDSHIPS. So they came back, hard. Also, it sounded like she attributed a MADELINE ALBRIGHT QUOTE to KATIE COURIC. And sure it was 2013 so hating Katie wasn’t as important as it is now but it was still fucking.... bad to stan lol. The whole thing was a MESS.
Poehler responded by saying: “Aw, I feel bad if she was upset. I am a feminist and she is a young and talented girl. That being said, I do agree I am going to hell. But for other reasons. Mostly boring tax stuff.”
Fey then said: “If anyone was going to get mad at us, I thought it would be James Cameron. I did not see that one coming. It was a joke. It was a lighthearted joke. And it's a shame that she didn't take it in the crazy-aunt spirit in which it was intended.” (The Cameron joke was that Kathryn Bigelow knows about torture from being married to him lol).
The world fucking lost it and Taylor became a joke. EVERYONE MOCKED HER. Everyone sided with Tina and Amy. Tay was a ridiculous, petty, serial dating airhead.
And so a few months later, Tay debuted Kar and The Squad.
Tina didn’t let it go by the way, she’s been bringing this up for years lmao. We stan the pettiness as usual.
But yes, thanks for coming to my Ted Talk on how Tina Fey and Amy Poehler created The Squad and, inadvertently, Kaylor 😂

Drabble 102
New Clothes
Varian had always liked his blue shirt, but after wearing it throughout his imprisonment, there was something negative attached to it now. Quirin agreed that it was probably time for a change. They went to the tailor’s shop not long after Quirin had been freed. It still elated Varian to know that Rapunzel had kept her promise, that she still cared for him and his Dad and that Quirin was free again. Every little thing they did was another happy memory Varian could make, after he had long despaired he’d never be happy again. It was thrilling.
But it was also a little disconcerting, because Varian was a free man now too, but people still remembered his past deeds. There were more than a few whispers in Old Corona that the mad alchemist was back, pardoned by the Princess (somehow). What would he do? Was it safe to be around him? Most of the whispers weren’t too unkind, just wary. Varian suspected they’d be a lot worse if Quirin was sticking by his side, determined to catch up with his son after the long, painful year apart.
“So… you’re a year older. Do you… still like the Flynn Rider books?” Quirin asked, trying to make small talk.
Varian snorted. “It was a year Dad. I’d never change so much that I’d forget my favorite book series ever.” Varian replied.
“Good to know.” Quirin mentally filed that under ‘things that hadn’t changed.’
“Do you… think the tailor will mind working with me?” Varian bit his lip nervously. He’d known Dan the tailor all his life. But did Dan still think of him as Varian, the boy who accidentally made messes with his alchemy, or did he think of Varian as the vengeful revolutionary?
“Dan. Good to see you. My son is in need of new clothes.” Quirin said in greeting.
“Varian. Ah... I am not sure what we have in stock...” Dan fumbled for an excuse. Fortunately, he was ‘rescued’ by his apprentice.
“Varian!” Katie squealed. “It’s so good to see you!”
Varian smiled. Katie had always liked him, almost taking on a big sister role around him. At least her opinions hadn’t soured on him.
“Let’s get you fitted for something right away!” she pulled out her tape measure and began marking measurements. “23 inch waist, that’s a little small. You must have… been watching your diet in...” she couldn’t bring herself to say prison. “Perhaps a vest would look good on you, give you some padding. I’ve got a nice red one with buttons. We’ll only have to take it in a little.” Katie didn’t add that the vest had originally been ordered by a 13 yr old who’d changed his mind at the last minute. Varian had always been scrawny, but the 15 lbs he’d lost in prison definitely showed.
Still, Katie was all smiles, instructing Varian to take off his old clothes and slip into the new ones, blithely pinning Varian’s new vest, and adding sleeve garters to a shirt with long white sleeves. “You’ll want an apron too, and gloves. I know how you like to work on your projects.” Katie continued, happily. She was in her element, talking about clothes. It had been her dream to be a seamstress ever since she was a child, and Varian was glad to see her succeed.
“I’ve been working regularly with Dan for awhile now. When he retires-- which won’t be for a good long time mind you-- my name is going to be on the shop. Isn’t that exciting?” Katie babbled.
“Yeah. You deserve it. You’ve always been a hard worker.” Varian replied, relaxing now that he was on familiar ground. Dan had made himself scarce, and Varian tried telling himself that it was just business and Dan wasn’t purposely avoiding him, but the thought that he might lurked in the back of his mind.
“Thanks, Varian. Of course, there’s been some more changes in my life. You know Adam, right?” Katie said.
“The miller’s older son.” Varian replied.
“Right. He and I have been going steady for 8 months now.” Katie blushed a little.
“Congratulations.” Varian told her sincerely.
“Adam makes me so happy! We’re having lunch together, a little picnic, but maybe tomorrow you and I could talk some. They’ve rebuilt so many things since the rocks...” Katie faltered. “...caused some trouble. There’s parts of town you’d hardly recognize.” She noticed Varian tense up at that, and hastily backtracked. “But much of it is still the same! Dad’s sheep still graze in the pasture, and Pamela can still be found reading when she’s not at work and the baker still trades recipes with Attila...”
“Yeah. I’m sure a lot of it is like I remembered.” Varian replied. Old Corona was a small town, and for good or bad, it resisted change. Whatever differences there were between now and last year were mostly superficial. It was Varian who was different, Varian who had always stood out and not in a good way, back in town and back to being the subject of fear and distrust. If he’d been alone, he didn’t know if he could face it. But Quirin was back and Quirin had always been liked in town, even if there had been an undercurrent of pity for the hard-working widower with the troublesome child. But Varian wasn’t a child anymore, and he was determined not to be troublesome either. He’d work in the fields, he’d work in his lab, creating things that would help improve the quality of life, and perhaps in doing so he’d atone for all the bad things he’d done.
“There.” Katie finished pinning and adjusting his outfit. “You look like a new man, standing proud.” Next to her, Quirin nodded his approval.
“Thanks, Katie.” Varian said. Maybe in time he would feel proud, just as she said. In fact, with his Dad by his side, Ruddiger rubbing up against his ankles, and some friends he could count on, he was sure of it.
The End
Varian’s a brave kid, it can’t have been easy to reintegrate back into society after his jail time. When you see him in later episodes, it seems like he’s always working, trying to be helpful. I hope he took some time for self care too, even small things like shopping can do wonders.

let it unfold - chapter six
chapter six
day twenty two
“Okay, so what have you done the last few days?” Aaron asked. Mark and Katie listed everything since the pedal boating – from going to Lint Valley, visiting Greenville once more, exploring downtown Vancouver, watching a liveshow, and binging new television on Netflix.
John scrunched up his face, “I can’t tell if you’re doing a lot or staying in a lot.”
She rolled her eyes; “Honestly probably staying in a lot but my body feels like its doing a lot.” Mark’s eyes widened as he turned into his childish self, laughing at the innuendo – Aaron, John, Leila, and Sammy started laughing as well. “Not in that way!” The group still chuckled – Mark laughing, but having turned pink at the insinuation. Katie was even more flustered, trying to change the conversation; “so escape room tomorrow still?”
day twenty four
“So, whose this friend we were supposed to meet?” Katie’s friends asked once they finished their life updates, as they sat in the coffee shop and Katie just poked at the brownie on her plate. Her friends took trains all the way from their respective Canadian states – most of them Montreal or Toronto as they studied in different universities, like Ryerson.
She sighed, biting her lip, before releasing a deep exhale. “He won’t be coming anymore.” Her friends aren’t really well-versed in K-Pop, only knowing about BTS and the military style workouts so she wasn’t worried about them knowing about him. “His name is Mark and I’m kind of avoiding getting closer to him right now.”
Kathleen squinted her eyes, taking a sip of her hot chocolate. “What do you mean?”
“Okay, so you guys know not much about K-Pop right?” The five of them nodded.
“Just that they are highly monitored.” Patrick mumbled.
“Mark is a part of a KPop group and basically have been in K-Pop training life since he was…around middle school.” She explained, “Basically, while we were making mistakes and fucking around, he couldn’t afford to.” She always says that when explaining the K-Pop training process. “And Mark wanted to get away from it so we came here, and it’s now almost a month since we left and our mutual best friend just started messaging me yesterday about how Mark’s career is getting affected by our escape.”
Alex shrugged, “So? You’re already here, you can’t escape him.”
“This is his dream, bud.” She sighed, “I can’t take that away from him.”
“Aren’t K-Pop idols not allowed to date?” Kieran added, furrowing his eyebrows. Katie nodded slightly, her heart fluttering and her mind focused on trying to divert her emotions. “Do you have feelings for him Kate?”
Katie bit the side of her gum. “That’s a yes!” Kathleen teased. “Girl, legit, I’ve never heard you talk about someone with so much happiness. Like, of course, when you first became friends with your friends in Korea, but like…this is definitely a step-up from what’s his name… your ex?”
“Daniel!” Patrick basically-screamed, making onlookers to look at the group.
“Do you want to pull away because you don’t want to catch feelings that’ll endanger his work?” Alex asked. Oh yeah, she’s a psychology student – Katie reminded herself.
“Exactly!”
“That’s dumb.” Patrick commented outright, making Keith slap his shoulder.
“Bro,” Keith stopped him.
“No, Keith, it’s fine, I rather hear honesty.” Katie smiled, before looking down at her drink.
Keith sighed, “I don’t think it’s dumb.” He smiles, “It shows you care.”
day twenty-five
“I missed you yesterday.” Mark commented as he was cooking something in the kitchen, “You told me you’d be home late and I tried staying up for you.”
Katie bit her lip, “Oh yeah, my friends and I went to a local bar.” She shrugged, “I was glad I told you not to go,” She fake-chuckled, “you would’ve hated it.” That was a lie; while she was at the bar, she knew Mark would’ve loved it. People were shout-singing karaoke, dancing around the bar like there was no tomorrow, and alcohol was cheap.
“Well, Aaron and John asked me to hang out with them today.” Katie told them to ask him to hang out, so they’d be separated. It took a lot of convincing and plotting for them to accept that Katie wouldn’t come. “You should come.”
Katie smiled, spewing out the excuse the group created. “Boy’s night, my…” She was going to say love – an affection they started calling each other recently. “…bud.” She completed.
“Will you be bored?”
She shrugged again, “I made plans with Leila and Sammy.” That was the deal with Aaron and John; boys night and girls night. “What time will you get back by?”
“Maybe around midnight.” He shrugged; a weird tension in the air that neither of them can place. Mark can sense something is up; either Katie is hiding something or avoiding him, and Katie can tell he senses this. Unfortunately, she refuses to let him know. “I can pick you up from whatever you’re doing.”
“No, don’t worry about it.” She quickly interjected, “I’ll be home early so don’t worry about me.”
And that’s what happened. At midnight, Katie pretended to be asleep on the sofa bed and sneakily saw Mark arrive home. He saw the Tupperware of food Katie left out for him; his favorite dish that happened to be in the restaurant the girls and her went to. She saw the excitement on his face when he saw the pizza bagel bites she bought for him.
She didn’t expect for him to walk over to her ‘sleeping’ form and kissing her forehead. It took her all her power to avoid smiling like a fool at the action.
day twenty-seven
Katie left early in the morning with an excuse she created the day prior; went to a coffee shop, tutoring a student x I’ll see you later, she had written on a post it note.
When she came home that night – after hours of hopelessly wandering around and finding things to do to avoid Mark, she saw the devil himself curled up in the same spot she was the night prior – obviously having waited for her. He was wearing a gray hoodie, his glasses were still on, and his hair was a curly mess on the top of his head.
In place of the post it note was a box of the macaroons she mentioned she was craving from the Public Market.
She sighed; her heart beating crazy. She walked towards Mark to lift the spare blanket over him, but as soon as she turned away to walk to the den, a hand wrapped around her wrist.
“Did I do something wrong?” A sleepy-voice mumbled.
day twenty-eight
After the confrontation the night prior, Mark and Katie woke up at a certain time to do what Mark offered to do; teach her a dance that they could busk to, like she suggested the first week of being in Canada.
Katie felt guilty – felt guilty for feeling the way she did when Mark put his hand on her waist to help guide her hips, or how Mark eventually wrapped his arms around her whole body to help her move around like the dance required. She felt tingles at the skin contact; she felt her heart galloping.
Now, they’re by the fountain with their portable speakers and a crowd gathering around them.
They were both laughing; having fun, actually earning a bit of spare change as they danced to ‘What Is Love?’ by TWICE. But that was all over when…
“OH MY GOD THAT’S MARK LEE!”

Chapter 12 Part 1
Stark Spangled Banner Masterlist // Main Masterlist
“What are you wearing?“ Tony asked as Katie looked up from where she was sat with Natasha in the main area of the party room, the two of them watching re-runs of Friends on the large holo-screen.
She looked down, “What does it look like?”
“A hoody with a Captain America shield on it.”
“You’re clever…” Natasha quipped. Tony ignored her and continued talking to Katie.
“Did he give you that?”
Steve, who had at that moment walked into the room, sighed and crossed his arms.
“No I didn’t.”
“I’ve had it a while.” Katie shrugged, smiling up at Steve “Hey Soldier. All sorted?”
He nodded “Tony and I did a full sweep of the venue. Evans is keeping an eye on it now until we turn up. We’ll do a final check before we start.”
“Where’s Pepper?” Katie looked at Tony.
“Meeting us there.” Her brother answered, dropping onto the sofa. “Thought I’d get ready here and head down with you guys.”
Katie smiled and checked her watch, giving a start. “Oh, shit, Franco will be here soon to do our hair…then we need to get dressed before make up…Nat, we need to go.”
Natasha and Katie stood up, Katie giving Steve a quick peck on the lips as she passed him. “I’ll let you know when it’s safe to come up”
“Okay.” He nodded, watching the pair of them as they headed off to get ready.
“Safe?” Tony looked at Steve, and he gave a shrug.
“I’m assuming she means once they’re actually dressed…” His eyes flicked to the TV.
Tony pondered for a moment before he stood up. “Drink?”
“Sure, thanks Tony.” Steve nodded, his eyes turning to Clint as he walked into the room.
“Hey.” The Archer greeted them both, a huge grin plastered on his face.
“What are you looking so pleased at?” Tony asked him as he rounded the side of the bar.
“I am excited!” he smiled “To see this huge New Year’s celebration to End all New Year’s celebrations you’ve been talking so much about…”
“Well, you know I can throw a party.” Tony mused, grabbing a bottle of scotch and three glasses.
They were joined shortly by Bruce, and the four of them sat drinking for an hour, talking about anything and everything, before Tony looked at his watch and decided he too needed to get ready. Following suit, Steve decided to brave whatever chaos was going on in the apartment upstairs and as he walked into the living room he could hear chatter coming from the bedroom.
“Well, it kinda fits, but I fall out of the top a bit.” he heard his girl say. “I only wore it once. You can have it if you want.”
Steve approached the bedroom, to find the door open. He took one glance inside and once he had stopped staring at his girl, he felt his mouth drop open at the chaos the two women had created.
“What the hell?”
Katie and Nat both turned in unison to find Steve leaning on the doorframe, staring wide-eyed at the mess they had created.
“We got side-tracked…” Katie shrugged before turning back to the closet. “Nat decided her dress wasn’t flashy enough after seeing mine so we’re looking for alternatives.”
"Is that supposed to explain why it looks like the closet threw up all over our room?” Steve asked, arching an eyebrow.
Katie smiled as she kicked an errant heel out of the way and reached down to dig something out of the pile of clothes on the bed. “What do you think about this?” She asked, holding the shimmering navy mini-dress up.
“Do you actually own that?” Steve asked, “I’ve never seen it.”
Nat turned to him and raised a single eyebrow. "But you’d like to see it on her now, wouldn’t you?”
“I happen to like the one she’s wearing.” He said, and he meant it. The scarlet-red, number which she had agonised over buying clung in all the right places, but it was the thigh high split up the right side that was setting his blood pumping, as with every move she made he got a flash of her long, delectably toned leg along with a cheeky flash of that thigh tattoo. Her hair was falling in sleek waves around her shoulders expertly framing her pretty face.
“Oooh, now this I like.” Nat said, pulling out a black silk jumpsuit from the closet.
“Yeah that’s nice.” Katie nodded “I got that in London. Try it on.”
Nat turned and looked at Steve, jerking her head to the door. Instantly realising what she meant he held his hands up and hastily backed out of the room.
Once he was gone Natasha stripped off and shimmied into the jumpsuit, turning to look at Katie.
“Nice…” Katie nodded, and she meant it. Nat’s legs looked about a mile long, her waist was tiny, and the deep V neckline at the front flashed her boobs perfectly. “We just need…” Katie moved to her dresser and pulled out a roll of tit-tape, flashing it at Natasha. Once they’d adjusted the front, it looked perfect.
“Very nice.” Katie affirmed before shouting out into the hall. “Steve, come here.”
Steve re-appeared in the doorway, arms folded stoically over his chest, with a rather alarmed-looking Tony by his side.
“You weren’t kidding.” Tony muttered as he surveyed the mess.
Katie ignored him and looked at Steve. "Tell Nat how sexy she looks.”
“Katie!” Nat exclaimed, and for the first time in the history of knowing her, Katie was amused to see Nat’s cheeks burning red in embarrassment as Tony barked out a laugh.
“Yeah, I’m not gonna tell her that,” Steve sighed, rubbing at his temple in exasperation.
“I think you look very nice, Natasha.” Tony offered, smirking. “For a merciless assassin, that is.”
“Fuck off, Shell-Head.” She narrowed her eyes at him.
“Rude.” Tony sniffed. “Anyway, I came to tell you your make-up artist has arrived. I sent her to Nat’s.”
Steve let out a sigh of relief and Katie looked at him.
“Okay, we’re done here anyway,” Natasha shrugged. “Let’s go.”
"What? Wait,” Steve stammered, spinning around and following them to the living room. “You can’t just come over and trash the place and then leave.”
“Of course I can,” Nat shrugged. “Watch.”
He rolled his eyes. “I’m blocking you from this apartment.”
“Errr technically it’s my apartment.” Katie looked at him as Natasha left, following Tony, and he folded his arms. “Just shove it all on the floor, I’ll sort it later.”
“You’re a pain in my ass.” Steve grumbled and Katie grinned.
“But you love me. I’ll be back up once my make-up is done.”
He rolled his eyes again before he smiled softly “You look great already. That dress is gonna kill me you know?” Katie flushed slightly before she leaned up and gave him a soft kiss. “I can’t wait to see you a tux again.” “Yeah?”
“Yeah…but I’m gonna enjoy getting you out of it even more.”
******
“Katie looks nice.” Bruce commented.
"Nice,” Rhodey repeated “She looks unbelievable. Mind you I still remember her as an eighteen year old student with blue streaks in her hair…”
Steve smiled as he watched Katie from where he was propped up against the bar talking to Rhodey and Bruce. She was mingling alongside her brother, talking to a group of people from Stark Industries. He saw her throw her head back in a laugh that was ridiculously over the top yet somehow she managed to make it look perfectly natural. He knew his girl was a knock out. But when he had seen her earlier that evening when her and Natasha had been getting ready he had been lost for words. The dress she had agonised over hung to her every curve, skin bare at her back. Her hair was set in soft, thick waves which framed her face. Her lips were painted in a smiliar red to her dress and the thick, smoky shadow and eyeliner over her lids made her green eyes stand out even more. As he watched, the dark haired, slightly overweight man she was stood next to dropped a hand to the bottom of her back and she turned to smile at him, gently patting his shoulder before she glanced over as Steve, rolled her eyes and mouthed “help me.” He let out a chuckle “Scuse me fellas…” and he strode across the room.
“Ah, the man of the moment.” Tony greeted him, “We were just talking about you.” “Oh?” Steve smiled, dropping a kiss to Katie’s cheek. “All good I hope?”
He didn’t even have to shoot Mr Wandering Hands a glare, the man instantly moved away as Katie stepped gently towards Steve, his hand curling around her waist.
“Yeah.” Tony nodded “Sorry, Cap this is Jeremy Saul, Finance Director for Stark Industries. Jeremy was just asking where you were.” “I couldn’t believe for one second this gorgeous lady would be here on her own” Jeremy smiled offering his hand. Steve’s left hand gripped Katie’s hip a little tighter and she smirked into her champagne flute as he shook Jeremy’s hand with his right. “Good to meet you Captain Rogers.” “Jeremy is part of the board.” Katie said, levelling Steve with a look. A look that was blatantly telling him to be nothing but charming as Mr Wandering Hands could veto her proposal. So Steve was. He politely listened to the man, answered questions and nodded along until Wandering Hand’s attention was diverted elsewhere and he excused himself from their company, but only after dropping a lingering kiss to Katie’s cheek.
“Slimeball.” She muttered when he had gone “I swear to God Tony, it’s only a matter of time before someone files a sexual harassment case against him.” Tony snorted “Until he does something outta line he’s staying Kiddo. For one thing he’s good at his job, and for another I don’t fancy the rigmarole and bad press associated with a tribunal.”
“Mr Stark…” Happy called to him. Tony spun round to see the man tapping at his watch and gesturing to the stage.
“Better go before Happy has a heart attack, can’t have my speech being thirty seconds late.” Tony rolled his eyes and he span on his heels, striding over to Happy, placating the man who as making furious gestures with his hands.
Katie chuckled to herself and grabbed another 2 glasses of champagne off a waiter as he passed, dropping her empties onto the tray. She handed one to Steve who dropped a kiss to her head.
“I know I said it before but you really do look incredible.”He still couldn’t believe his luck at times. She beamed up at him.
“And you.” And she meant it. He looked good enough to eat in a well fitted black tux and slightly off-white dress shirt, along with the cufflinks she had given him the previous year. She had watched him before as he looked himself up and down in the mirror and now, looking him over as he stood by her, she felt her stomach flutter again. A wicked smirk crossed her face. “Can you leave the suit on later?”
He was about to quip back that he’d do whatever the hell she wanted if she left those heels on too, but there was suddenly loud music blaring out and the light on the stage all started moving around zooming in and zooming out.
Katie, upon hearing the music gave a loud scoff “Egotistical dick!” She snorted, unable to hide the laugh in her voice.
“I don’t…” Steve began but she shook her head.
“You won’t” she smirked “It’s by a band called Queen- One Vision. Listen to the lyrics and you’ll understand why he chose it!”
The introduction music finished and the screen sprang to life at the back of the stage showing Iron Man flying over the tower in New York, and as the first lines of the song sounded in Steve’s ear he let out a snort.
The video continued, various bits of footage of Tony in the Iron Man suit, in the office, then there were some of Pepper in the office, Katie, the Avengers…it was all very showy for want of a better word, but at the end of the music it abruptly stopped and Tony stepped onto the stage, right hand held up, thanking everyone for the applause that had broken out. Steve noticed that Katie wasn’t clapping, instead she was shaking her head and trying not to laugh.
To give Stark his dues, Steve could see the man knew how to work a crowd. Just like he had seen Howard do many, many years ago. He welcomed everyone, thanked them for coming and talked about the company achievements for the year, the declared turn over, the charity work and thanked everyone for their continued work making Stark Industries a huge success. Katie however had zoned out until she heard her name being mentioned, and Steve nudging her lightly with his elbow.
“Where are you Kiddo?” Tony repeated
Katie’s eyes grew wide “Oh fuck.” She muttered shrinking into Steve a little as the spotlight found them.
Tony beamed, looking at his sister as she was flushing bright red from being the centre of attention. “I’d like to boast for a few moments about my sister if I may. As you will know, Katie and I lost our parents when Katie was only seven years old and some wise guy deemed me responsible enough to become her legal guardian.” There were some chuckles “But I can’t have done too bad a job. She graduated with a first from Oxbridge and worked in England heading up our UK branch, and more recently left to serve if you will, as an analyst for an Intelligence Agency before resigning a few months back due to a difference of opinion with the boss.”
“That’s one way of putting it.” Steve muttered, causing Katie to smile a little.
“And, as of yesterday the Stark Industries board voted in favour of a proposal Katie brought to the-” “What?!” She spluttered loudly, glancing at Tony who was on the stage, laughs ringing around the room at her reaction
“Yes Kiddo, they voted in favour of your proposal, which means next year will see the launch of our latest venture, Stark Independent Publishers. This is a great opportunity for anyone in the business who would like a change in direction and we will be opening positions up internally before we advertise. Keep your eyes peeled.” Katie gulped, her eyes wide. They’d accepted her proposal. She was officially in business.
**** The party carried on through the night, and about fifteen minutes or so before midnight Katie, feeling the effects of various drinks grabbed Steve’s hand and pulled him onto the dance floor. A dance with his girl was something he’d never disagree to so Steve allowed himself to be steered into the throng of partygoers. He moved a little closer to her, slightly put off by all the people surrounding them. But as his arms found their way around her waist and hers snaked around his neck he felt himself relax as they began swaying to the music. The song finished and the music changed pace slightly, but their slow rocking motion remained the same and then Steve realised what the song was.
“Hey…” he grinned and she looked up at him with a small smile. “This is our song.”
“I asked them to play it.” she said, a little sheepishly, but this only made him pull her closer so that their foreheads were resting together before he rubbed his nose gently against hers as the music crashed over them. Steve adjusted his and her arms so they were in a proper dancing hold and they swayed to the song, just as they had done those months ago in her living room.
Tony was watching them out of the corner of his eye as he revolved Pepper around the dancefloor.
“Stop it.” Pepper said, laughing at him.
“What?” He turned his head to look at her.
“Watching them”
Tony smiled, not even trying to hide it anymore as he looked over at where his sister was dancing, her cheek was resting on Steve’s chest, top of her head tucked underneath his chin, as she laughed at something he said, tilting her head up to look at him and the smiling captain dropped a soft kiss to her lips.
“I’ve never seen her so happy, Pep.” Tony sighed fondly as he watched the pair of them dancing together.
“I reckon they’ll make great babies.” Pepper teased, causing Tony to choke on nothing and look at her.
“What…why would…is she?” Pepper let out a laugh and shook her head “Not that I know of but they’re in it for keeps. I can tell. He’ll have a ring on it by this time next year.” “Well, so might I.” Tony teased and Pepper looked at him, smirking.
“Yeah, don’t bank on that. I told you, we’re not ready for that yet.”
“Kiddo is fourteen years younger than me.” Tony pouted.
“And fourteen years more mature.” Pepper smirked as the song drew to an end.
“Miss Potts you are breaking my heart.” Tony muttered, dropping a kiss to her lips. She smiled and gently pulled away from him, patting his chest and heading to the bar.
The band finished that song and then there was a loud cheer as the large clock on the screen began to count down, Steve and Katie moved to one of the windows to get a look over the city. As the room erupted as the countdown finished, Steve turned to the woman in his arms and smiled at her gently.
“Happy New Year, Beautiful.” he said softly.
“Happy New Year, Handsome” She beamed, as his lips met hers.
*****
“You ok?” Steve asked Katie as she leaned against the wall of the elevator, letting out a huge sight.
“Yeah.” she said, “Just tired…that was…”
“Draining, I think is the word.” Steve’s hand reaching up to first undo his tie and then pop the top button of his collar undone. “I don’t know how your brother hosts those galas so often.”
“Well, Tony’s Tony.” Katie shrugged, “He’s a show off. I enjoyed it though. Been a while since we held a formal New Year’s party.”
“Yeah, it was kinda fun, and that was brilliant news about the publishers. I’m proud of you, ya know?” Steve chuckled and turned to his girlfriend. “And you looked beautiful tonight.”
Katie smiled and turned to look Steve over, and raised an eyebrow as she took in his now undone bow-tie, the snug white dress shirt, and his expertly tailored black suit which fit his physique perfectly. “You don’t look bad yourself, Soldier.” She grinned, her eyes meeting his and he gave her a smirk.
“I should hope so, the amount this suit cost.”
“Oh stop complaining” she said, “You’re dating a billionaire.”
“Oh, don’t I know it.” He looked at her, arching an eyebrow. “You have no idea how hard it was tryin’a figure out what to buy the woman who has everything for Christmas…”
Katie shook her head with a snort “I thought you did amazingly well, your Ma’s ring was a perfect gift. Plus socks are always a good bet.”
“Yeah, I’m not getting you any more so you can just mix them all up to make odd pairs.”
Katie let out a laugh as her arms slid up round Steve’s neck, “You know I only do that now to piss you off.”
“I’m well aware of this fact.” he looked at her, his hands gently resting on the small of her back. “It’s a good job I love you.”
She grinned as he leaned down and pressed a soft kiss to her lips but just as he was pulling away the elevator jolted slightly, and they were plunged into darkness. Steve steadied the pair of them, before the emergency lighting kicked in and he looked at her.
“JARVIS?” She called out.
“Apologies, Miss Stark.” the AI replied “We have a temporary power outage along the left side of the tower.”
“How?” Katie frowned “I didn’t think that was possible with the Arc reactor?”
“It isn’t.” JARVIS replied “This is down to a planned system shut-down. Mr Stark has been running some updates and as a result there has been a temporary outage on the…”
“Ok, Ok.” Katie grumbled, “Don’t need to know. How long till you fix it?”
“Mr Stark is currently aware that the pair of you are…”
“That’s not answering my question, you know what? Just patch him through.” Katie sighed, pinching the bridge of her nose as Steve gently rubbed at her back. He knew she didn’t particularly like confined spaces, and whilst the elevator wasn’t exactly small, she wouldn’t be happy at the fact they were stuck.
“Kiddo?”
“What the fuck Tony?” She blazed at him “A System update?”
“I forgot all about it!” Tony chuckled. “I thought I’d postponed…”
“You thought wrong.” Steve chipped in “We’re stuck.”
“Yeah, I know. Want me to send Clint through the air-vents for you?”
“I am NOT crawling through air-vents in a fucking Galliano gown!” Katie seethed “Get it sorted.”
“Update should be done in 20 minutes.” Tony replied. “Sit tight…”
“Twenty…twenty minutes? I swear to God, Tony, when I get out of here you are dead!”
“Yeah, yeah…” Tony replied, sounding bored “If you killed me every time you threatened to I’d never have made my 40th birthday…”
“You’re such an ass hole.”
“Errr, be nice or I’ll make it an hour.”
“Fuck you.” Katie snarled “JARVIS, I don’t want to hear from him again until this is fixed!”
“As you wish, Miss Stark.”
“Why is he such a dick?” She turned back to look at Steve, leaning against the wall of the elevator.
“He’s Tony.” Steve shrugged. “Hey, come on. It’s only 20 minutes. It’ll be ok.”
Katie took a deep breath before she let out a groan “My feet are killing me.”
“Take your shoes off then.”
Katie went to kick them off before she let out an exasperated noise. “Ankle straps…forgot…”
She went to bend down to undo them but Steve gently laid his hand on her arm.
“I’ll do it, Sweetheart.” He offered, dropping to his knees. He gently took her left foot, placed it on his thigh and undid the buckle on the gold leather that looped around her ankle. Once that was off he repeated the process with her right foot, and in doing so the slit on her dress revealed her leg to him once again and he couldn’t help but slide his eyes up her frame, over her tattoo which was peeking through the space in her dress and up to her face where her eyes locked onto his and he flashed her his best cheeky grin.
She arched an eyebrow at him, smirking “Down boy.”
Rising to his feet once her second shoe was removed, his hand traced up the outside of her bare leg through the slit in her dress, and continued underneath the soft material, before he stopped suddenly, hand on her hip and looked at her.
“You’re not wearing any panties.” His eyes were wide.
She shrugged “Would ruin the line of the dress.”
Steve let out a groan as he grabbed at her skin. “Seriously, you’ve had nothing on under there all night?”
“Nope.” she grinned at him.
“Doll.” His voice was a whine.
“What?” She looked at him, innocently “Not like anyone could see.”
“No, but it’s kind of a turn on.” he muttered, his hands moving so they were flat against the wall by her head.
“Yeah?” She asked, her eyes locking onto his.
“Yeah.” He mumbled, his lips nearing hers. “You know, we got 20 minutes.”
“Well, about fifteen now.”
“Good job I only need ten then isn’t it?” He smirked, his lips crashing onto hers. She kissed him back, hungrily as he pressed into her more, his hands creeping down to grab at her dress, hoisting the materiel upwards. His fingers softly caressing the outside of her thighs and his lips moved from hers to the pulse point of her neck and she gave a soft, sultry sigh. Steve couldn’t help but react to her noises and movements by pushing against her harshly, and the noise she made as his crotch rubbed up against her bare core was fucking sinful. His cock twitched but somewhere in his brain his logical mind crashed through.
“Fuck, are there cameras in here?”
“The power’s out, they won’t be working.” Katie mumbled, as her hands went to his belt buckle. “Shut up and stop thinking.”
With a clink she’d undone his belt and the top button of his flies, before she slid down the zip, pushing his suit pants down slightly over his hips. Her hand reached into his boxers and she grasped him in her hand and Steve let out a hiss.
“Buy a guy a drink first, Doll.” he mumbled, his lips returning to hers.
“I bought you plenty, not my fault it doesn’t have any affect coz of your stupid serum…”
“Stupid?” He grinned against her mouth before his lips and teeth skated over her jaw line to her neck “Not what you say after we’ve gone a few rounds.”
“Quit talking and fuck me, Steve.” She groaned, her head rolling back against the wall of the elevator. With a smirk Steve reached down, flipping the waistband of his boxers over before he grabbed the back of her thighs and lifted her easily off her feet. Her legs immediately wrapped around his waist, arms looped around his neck as he pressed her further against the wall using it to keep her supported as one hand gripped at her waist, the other flat against the cool metal behind her.
She rolled her hips, hard against him, causing Steve to let out a groan as his lips found hers again, hungrily kissing her while his hand skated from her hip over her bare stomach, reaching down to grab his cock before he lined himself up. With a swift drive forwards he pushed into her, a little forcefully, making her cry out sharply, one hand going to grip his bicep, the other against the wall to steady herself.
“Fuck…” she groaned as he pulled back, thrusting again, deeply as her head fell back with a bang against the wall. Steve reached round and unhooked the fastenings of her dress at the back causing it to fall forward, groaning as he found she was also bra-less.
“You’re a fucking minx.” He panted, his thrusts still deep and powerful as he gently circled a nipple with his tongue, teasing her with his mouth as she groaned, pushing down onto him further. She arched her back, the motion made him go deeper inside of her, drawling a loud moan from them both at the feeling.
“Stevie, you feel so good.” Katie moaned and he let out a groan of his own at her words, his thrusts still powerful, jolting her with every move he made. Her hands moved round to his back, clawing desperately at his shirt as her head fell forward and her teeth nipped at his ear drawing a deep rumbling growl from his throat. Her hands moved into his hair, where she pulled sharply back, jolting his lips from their current positioning on her chest so she could kiss him again, sloppily, messily.
He pushed up again, bottoming out once more and she cried out into his mouth and he gave a smirk as he looked at her, utterly wrapped up in the sensations she was feeling, and so was he. This woman was his absolute downfall.
“Fuck, Captain!”
Especially when she said that.
“Jesus, Doll.” his words were broken through his panting, and he watched as she gave another sultry growl, her head rolling back against the wall as her hands clamped onto his shoulders. Steve felt the tell-tale flutter of her clamping around him and he continued his fast, deep pace until she cried out, a loud scream before she dropped her head to his shoulder, moaning his name, again and again whilst he pounded through her orgasm chasing his own.
“Shit, Katie…I’m…fuck!” His words tumbled into her hair as his movements became desperate and he came with a force he wasn’t quite sure he’d felt before. His knees threatened to buckle but he managed to keep himself upright, pressing into her more as the pair of them struggled for breath. Katie watched him for a second, smiling to herself as those ridiculously long eyelashes fluttered against his flushed cheeks. Her fingers gently skated up his neck and into his hair as he pressed his forehead to hers, his eyes remaining closed as he regained his composure.
“You good?” He asked her softly as he opened his crystal blue eyes to look at her, and she gave him a grin, nodding. Gently he set her back on her feet where she re-arranged her dress, and he sorted his pants out, tucking his shirt back in. Grabbing his jacket he gently placed it over her shoulders as he could see she was a little cold now, before he looked at her and gently brushed the tendrils of hair that had fallen over her face back. His hand on her cheek, his lips gently caught hers in a soft, tender kiss, a stark contrast to the violent ones they had shared moments before.
“I love you.” He said softly, and he pulled her to him, nuzzling into her hair as he sighed.
“Love you too Soldier” She murmured, causing him to chuckle before the emergency lighting flickered and the main lights of the elevator flashed back on, causing them both to blink.
“We have movement Kiddo!” Tony’s voice rang round the elevator “Told you it wouldn’t be long…”
“It was long enough.” Katie replied back, winking at Steve who gave a snort of laughter as the elevator once more began to rise, before it stopped at their floor. Steve bent to retrieve Katie’s shoes, taking them both in his right hand as he offered her his left. Her fingers linked into his and he led them out of the elevator and into the apartment.
*****
“We all good J?” Tony asked, leaning back in his arm chair glancing at the screen which were projecting out of the coffee table in front of him. The levels seemed ok and everything was back online. He’d completely forgotten he’d scheduled that update and he hadn’t really been planning on dealing with it after he’d drunk so much. Still, even drunk he was a genius so…
“Yes, Sir. Systems are all back on line and Miss Stark and Captain Rogers are safely back in their apartment.”
Tony sighed. “I’ll be getting my ass kicked tomorrow for that.”
“I don’t doubt it sir.” JARVIS replied.
“Thanks J.” Tony smirked “Happy New Year buddy.””
“And to you Mr Stark. Seeing that it is, indeed, a New Year, would you permit me to give you some advice, Sir, to ensure it starts off in the best way possible?”
“Advice?” Tony frowned, before he shrugged, necking the scotch in his glass. “Sure, shoot.”
“May I suggest you delete the security footage from the Residential Elevator.” JARVIS spoke. “Miss Stark wrongly assumed that the power outage would cut the security systems. I’m not sure that the video of the twenty minutes they spent in the elevator should remain on file.”
Tony frowned for a moment, before he understood what JARVIS was implying and let out a low groan. “Gross.” he mumbled “Yeah, yeah, delete it, permanently. And then get someone in there to give the thing a deep clean.”
“Certainly Sir. Goodnight.”
“Night J.” He said, standing up. Tony stretched, looking down at the screens as they turned off before he gave a snort. “Happy New Year Kiddo.” he mumbled, before he headed into his bedroom to find Pepper.
****
The first slivers of the New Year daylight flitted across Steve’s face and he gave a soft hmmm of contentment, rolling over, pulling his girl closer. Nestling his face into her neck he allowed her warmth and softness to wash over him as Katie muttered something, her body soon relaxing again as she continued to sleep. Simply put, he couldn’t remember a time he had enjoyed the holiday period so much. He’d had good times as a kid, even though his Ma had never been able to afford much she had always made Christmas as special as she could, but this…this just felt good. More than good actually, it felt better than anything ever had before.
If Steve was honest he couldn’t ever imagine waking up next to anyone else. Not now, not ever. His Ma had always told him “When you know, Stevie, you know…” and he knew.
If this was how he spent every morning for the rest of his life, well Steve Rogers would die a happy man.
Last night had been their first proper public appearance as a couple at a formal event, there hadn’t been any others to attend really, and he knew there had been a few heads turning their way, but instead of the awkwardness he had expected to feel at all eyes being on him dancing with his girl, he’d hardly noticed. Everything had faded to black except the woman in his arms.
He placed a soft kiss to her shoulder as he continued to doze, feeling utterly relaxed. It was another hour or so before Katie stirred besides him, her legs stretching out, brushing against his and she shifted a little, before she tilted her head, brushing her nose against his.
“Morning, Handsome.” she whispered and he smiled, eyes closed, his lips pressing to hers in a soft, hardly there kiss.
“Morning, Beautiful.” he hummed as she turned in his arms, snuggling closer to him, her face pressing into her chest as his finger-tips brushed up and down her spine, before he gently caressed her neck and cheek. Then the the simple morning cuddles turned into something a little less innocent. Bruising kisses, teasing touches were shared as Steve gently rolled Katie over onto her back, his hands linking with hers as he pressed them into the pillow at the side of her head before sliding home. It was lazy, gentle, loving as he kissed every single part of her he could reach, thrusting up against that spot over and over before he felt the tell-tale signs, heard her breathing turn ragged, shallow as she gently encouraged him not to stop, declaring how good she made him feel, how much she loved him. With a soft cry of his name, that pet name, Stevie, she tumbled straight over the edge she’d been teetering on and with a quiet groan that rolled in his throat he followed, his hips stuttering before he gently fell forward, burying his face into her neck as her hands softly tangled in his hair.
An hour or so later, after a shower they were sat on the sofa eating breakfast when Katie heard her phone going off. Reaching for it she frowned and then smiled a little…before she smiled a lot.
“Stevie, look.” She said gently, handing him the phone. He took it from her and blinked a little before he too felt the grin spreading across his face as he looked at the photo. It was one taken of them the previous night as they had been dancing. His girl looked good, as always, but Steve felt his eyes drawn to his own face, the look of unadulterated love on his features was something he wasn’t overly shocked to see, but at the same time it surprised him a little. He had no idea he made himself that easy to read.
“Who took that?” he asked, his eyes flicking to Katie.
“Tony said the photographer did.” she smiled “He just emailed it to me along with the message, and I quote ‘Thought you might like to see this one. Pepper thinks its cute but the puppy love eyes Spangles is giving you make me wanna barf.’”
Steve snorted and rolled his eyes, although he couldn’t give less of a shit about Tony’s starkasm if he tried.
“They’re looking at ones to put on the Stark Industries website, they always publish a gallery you know for people to see and stuff.” Katie continued “Do you mind if they use it?”
“Why would I mind?” he asked, handing her the phone back.
“Well, I know you’re a private person…well, behind all the Star Spangled man bullshit that is.” she shrugged.
“It’s fine Doll.” he said, “On one condition.” “What’s that?”
“Can I get a copy?” he asked, “I’d kinda like one for my apartment.”
She grinned and placed her phone back down on the coffee table. “I already emailed Tony back asking for two.”
Steve chuckled and leaned over to place a kiss to her cheek. “I love you.”
“You too.” she smiled, turning her lips to catch his.

Timeless 2x11 Reaction: “The Miracle of Christmas Part 1 and 2″
And thus Timeless is officially over. How did the writers fair with the series finale aka The Timeless movie? Pretty freakin’ fantastic.
Let’s dig in...
It’s been several months between Timeless’ Season 2 finale and their series finale tonight, so the writers wisely include a “Previously on Timeless.” We flashback to all their adventures while Unhappy Future Lucy (who looks a little scary if I’m being honest) narrates. It helps because I seriously forgot her mother is dead. (They kill Susanna Thompson on every damn show!)
The beginning is a little jarring because storylines I expected to happen in a season or two are all happening RIGHT NOW. My brain needs time to downshift, but I eventually adjust.
First things first - dealing with the third point in the love triangle, Garcia Flynn. Timeless isn’t interested in drawing out the shipper war because Wyatt and Lucy are kind of a mess. They require some screen time so they are fixed in a realistic manner.
Scary Future Lucy gives Present Day Lucy and Wyatt her diary. Spoiler alert: Lucy hooks up with Flynn. Spoiler alert: They break up sometime down the road because she is really in love with Wyatt. They play out Lucy and Flynn’s entire relationship in under 3 minutes. I’m not joking when I say they breeze through three to four seasons worth of triangle.
I love Goran Visnjic, and while I adore Lucy and Wyatt, I was never opposed to Lucy and Flynn. I mean yeah he’s a murderer. That’s a real negative, but it’s friggin Goran Visnic. Have you seen this guy? He’s so hot. Where Dr. Luca goes so goes my nation.
Kidding aside, the writers convey the depth of Lucy and Flynn’s relationship with just a few lines, which is an impressive writing achievement. I love how Flynn is all “I can’t believe you date me because I tried to kill you a bunch of times.” HAHAHA. Classic. And true! Ah the joy of television romance. But it ain’t gonna be you Flynn, so mosey along big fella.
Jessica is not pregnant. UGH. I HATED THIS STORYLINE SO MUCH.
I appreciate the writers giving it a fast and hard death, but this is one of the ways I think Season 2 went wrong. Timeless is a show that defied the typical television tropes and that’s what made it so interesting in Season 1. However, I think their Season 2 renewal, and desire to snare more viewers, created a “throw everything, but the kitchen sink” mentality.
They used every romance trope they could think of in Season 2 to see what would stick. It was just... not good. I don’t blame Timeless anymore than I do any other show that does this (and it’s pretty much all of them). It was just disappointing to see the show move in this direction, when previously they’d been so good at avoiding those kinds of storylines.
Flynn sacrifices himself by going back to 2012 to kill Jessica, so Rufus never dies. REDEMPTION ARC BITCHES!!! YESSSS!!
Seriously, he is so bad ass. Flynn puts a couple bullets in Jessica (plus one extra to be sure) after a ninja knockdown fight. He knows the effects of traveling to his own timeline will kill him... or something. Whatever. It doesn’t matter. Then he watches 2012 Flynn with his beautiful and living family through a window before he dies.
Flynn leaves a goodbye letter for Lucy that pretty much says he loves her, but he knows she loves Wyatt and he wants her to be happy. So yes, GARCIA FLYNN sacrifices himself for Rufus, ensures Lucy and Wyatt find the happy ending they deserve even though he is in love with Lucy, helps stop Rittenhouse and save the world. I AM SO EMO ABOUT MY BOY RIGHT NOW!
As for Lucy and Wyatt, they tiptoe around each other for most of the two hours. Wyatt thinks she ends up with Flynn and Lucy doesn’t want to be second choice. They are the only two who remember the Jessica history. Dear God, can we all forget too? Everyone is pretty much, “Why aren’t y’all together because y’all were together before and it was perfection?” So meta.
Wyatt almost dies in an explosion while delivering a baby during the fall of North Korea. Yes, you read that correctly. WYATT LOGAN IS HERE TO SAVE NATIONS AND DELIVER BABIES!
Lucy realizes she almost lost Wyatt and they are wasting time worrying about the past.
This part of the finale feels really predictable to me. There’s no way they are killing off Wyatt, especially after Flynn dies. Lyatt is endgame, so the two characters dancing around it for so long feels like prolonging the inevitable.
“After that explosion I thought you were dead. And for a moment I saw my whole life without you and my world ended Wyatt.”
But damn though, what a speech Lucy gives him.
Honestly, it is slightly annoying she did most of the talking because Wyatt is the one who screwed up. At least he offers up a “I wanted to pick you Lucy, but I felt I owed Jessica because she was my baby mama” explanation. Of course, we all knew this.
Lucy accepts Wyatt’s “I am a big pine tree” explanation because facts. Things really get cooking with some Lyatt mistletoe kissing.

Ah, a time honored holiday trope I will never grow tired of. Then they have sex
BUT CUT AWAY TOO SOON! Boo NBC!
Rufus is alive, but doesn’t remember being dead. Jiya remembers Rufus being dead, but he doesn’t remember Jiya living in Chinatown for three years in the 1800s. I think.
Jiya is concerned she’s no longer the woman Rufus fell in love with (re: see three years of trauma). I argue Rufus fell in love with a bad ass and Jiya is still most certainly one. It is frustrating how quickly they had to go through her physical and emotional trauma from Chinatown. Ugh, this is some seriously important drama that could have been a multiple season deep dive. Stupid cancellation.
Rufus and Jiya realize they are still perfect for each other, because they are perfect for each other. They start a company together and become billionaires saving the world. Jiya’s hair color is extremely pretty in the final scenes too. I feel this is very important detail to include. I heart them.

Lucy and Wyatt discuss how they don’t want to become scary Lucy and Wyatt from the future and THEY DON’T BECAUSE OF FLYNN. They get married, Wyatt works for Agent Christopher on special projects, and Lucy is a tenured history professor who focuses on important historical women. BECAUSE THERE AIN’T NO TIME FOR THE MEN! That’s right fellas. Drink your tea and wait your turn.
Unfortunately, Lucy is not able to get her sister Amy back. She gives an poignant speech about grief and loss, which could be the show’s mission statement. This is how you write a series finale:
"Everybody loses someone they love. And no matter how badly they want to they can't get them back. In spite of that they find a way to go on. That's everyone's history."
What connects all of time is our humanity. We are born. We live. We love. We suffer grief, pain and loss. We find joy. We endure. This is the thread century after century. In the end, we aren’t so different after all.
THEN LUCY AND WYATT GET MARRIED

AND HAVE TWIN GIRLS NAMED FLYNN AND AMY.

ALERT!!!!!!!!!! MULTIPLES CONCEIVED! IT IS THE DREAM! EVERYTHING IS AMAZING!!!!
The final scene is 2023 Lucy, Wyatt and Rufus traveling to 2014 to tell Garcia Flynn about the time machine. Lucy tells Flynn he doesn’t lose his humanity even though he never gets his family back. He is the hero the team and the world needs in the end. It connects the beginning and end of Timeless so seamlessly. This was probably always going to be the bookend. I just wish we had a few more seasons in between it.
They hint at a future time machine being invented by a young girl Rufus took an interest in at the science fair. The morality of the time machine is debated between Agent Christopher and Connor. She wants to destroy it, but Connor argues they need to keep it so they can stop others from abusing its power. You can’t un-invent something. Someone sooner or later will create the same technology Connor and Rufus did. They have a responsibility to make sure time travel is not abused and another Rittenhouse does not rise. So, the time machine is kept, covered, guarded and waiting.
Do I think we’ll see a resurrected Timeless about this girl and her time machine? No. I don’t. This is the last stop on the Timeless train and, while it was a wonderful ride, it is over. Actors are released from contracts. Writers, producers, crew, etc have all moved on to other gigs. It’s a freaking miracle they even made the movie. (Apropos episode title).
Timeless approached the series finale the correct way, which is what’s important to me. They didn’t leave a bunch of loose ends. The world was saved and I saw all our beloved characters living their happy lives in peace. I need to know these characters are going to be okay, so I can say goodbye.
Thank you Timeless for the insightful way you approached history, your cast of wonderful characters, humor and unflinching honesty. I look forward to the streaming deal so I can rewatch again and again.

Stray Thoughts
The finale is one EPIC Lucy speech after another. My girl runs this show.
Nobody was dressed appropriately for a North Korea winter.
It looked like the mother threw her newborn into Wyatt’s arms as her son came running to her. LOL Nice catch, soldier.
"I've loved you since the Alamo." Girl is that ever right.
Don't mock. Saint Christopher is for REAL. He has helped me out of many jams.
Hahaha. Wyatt said m'am. That's how you know it's the end.

Is It Just Me Or Are We Soulmates? -13
y’all, y’all, we’re heading towards the finale
p1 - p2 - p3 - p4 - p5 - p6 - p7 - p8 - p9 - p10 - p11 - p12
wanna read it on ao3? here’s the link -> link
It was the next day and Lance was having flashbacks to their difficult time getting into Japan. Lance had spent the whole night crying in anger, causing him to sleep in accidentally, causing both him and Hunk to miss their shuttle to the airport. When trying to check out of the hotel, they were having an issue with the pricing, claiming that the pair had accumulated over one hundred US dollars in snacks and drinks. By this point Lance was too agitated to say anything so Hunk had to explain to the concierge that no, they didn’t take anything from the mini-fridge, and no, he wasn’t going to pay for it. Once Hunk finally got everything settled and they were checked out, they had missed the second shuttle for the airport, forcing them to wait another thirty minutes in the humid air.
The only fortunate thing that came out of the entire day was the fact that they didn’t miss their flight, even with all the mess that happened earlier in the day. Boarding the plane was the most exciting part of the entire process, as when they finally landed, they’d be home.
Sighing, Lance flopped down into his seat, resting his head against the window. Hunk smiled sympathetically, sitting down in the seat next to him. He’d hadn’t asked Lance about what happened yesterday, and as much as Hunk’s curiosity ate at him, he knew better than to poke at the sleep deprived boy. Instead, Hunk pulled out a bag of chips from his bag, offering it to Lance as some sort of peace offering. Lance looked at him skeptically, before smiling and taking the bag.
“You know I’m not mad at you, right?”
Hunk nodded his head, grinning. “I know. But I also know that you didn’t eat anything today.”
Lance snorted, quickly opening the bag and shoving some chips into his mouth. The two of them sat in silence for a couple of minutes before someone caught their attention.
“Hunk? Lance?”
Looking up, Lance’s eyes widened slightly, a smile on his face as he waved towards the familiar girl. He swallowed before speaking: “Hey Allura, you’re on this flight too?”
She nodded her head, taking her seat next to Hunk, who greeted her as well. “Yes. I’m glad I don’t have to sit next to complete strangers,”
Hunk raised an eyebrow at her. “I thought you lived in England?”
Allura nodded her head, her eyes sparkling slightly. “I do, but I’m surprising my soulmate.”
Hunk cooed at the girl, immediately going into a conversation with her about how much they adored their soulmates. Lance smiled at them, although he couldn’t help but feel a bitter pang in his chest. Of course, out of all people, he’d be the one who’s soulmate didn’t love him. As much as he wanted to pester Shiro, there was something in him that was holding him back.
Pulling him out of his thoughts, a familiar name came through. Lance looked over at Allura, who was currently gushing about her soulmate.
“I’m sorry, who’d you say your soulmate is?”
Allura smiled, a dreamy look on her face. “Her name is Katie, but she also goes by—“
“Pidge, that gremlin!” Lance exclaimed, looking over at Hunk.
She tilted her head slightly, her smile not wavering. “Yes, she told me about you two,”
Lance felt his cheeks heat up while Hunk let out a laugh. Allura went on to talk about how Pidge would tell her embarrassing stories, from Hunk crying at two in the morning about why snakes don’t have arms to hitting Lance in the face with a baseball.
“Okay first of all, I did nothing wrong. Secondly, it was her stupid robotics project,” Lance grumbled, crossing his arms.
Allura laughed, unable to hold it in any longer. Lance huffed out a breath of air, an evil smirk creeping onto his face.
“Well, has Pidge told you about the time she was so sleep deprived that she once walked into a wall and then tried to pick a fight with it?”
She snorted, shaking her head. Hunk smiled mischievously.
“This is gonna be a fun flight.”
------
Two days after the death of Sora, Shiro was steadily coughing up a stream of flower petals. Instead of just blue, the petals seemed to be coming in all sorts of hues, ranging from the deepest blue to the lightest pink. He felt as if he was being suffocated, sometimes he wouldn’t be able to breathe. Of course, he kept this away from Misaki, making sure that she wasn’t anywhere near him when the petals came up. If she saw traces of them, he’d just brush it off and say that he bought some flowers for her. Shiro honestly couldn’t tell what was worse: being suffocated by flower petals or lying to Misaki about it.
Shiro tried extremely hard to stop thinking about Lance, but with every flower that emerged from his lungs he couldn’t help it. Every coughing fit he had, every suffocating breath he took, brought him back to the guilt he tried so hard to forget. He knew that he would have to take care of this, or else he’d be breaking his promise to his brother and Misaki.
Feeling a tug on his hand, Shiro turned his head, a small smile forming on his lips when he saw Misaki’s pouting face.
“What’s up, Misa?”
“You said we’re going to grandma and grandpa’s house! We’re gonna be late!” She said, tugging his hand towards the front door of his apartment.
Shiro rolled his eyes, opting to scoop the little girl into his arms. “Alright, alright, we’re going,”
Misaki squealed in glee as Shiro carried her out. He laughed as she went to talk to her doll about how excited she was to see her grandparents.
Once they made it to his parents house, he let Misaki loose, allowing her to run around and stretch her legs. Shiro smiled at his parents, going to hug his mother. They quietly talked about Sora and what they were going to do for his funeral. Shiro held his mother tighter when he noticed her eyes filling with tears.
As he made conversation with his parents, he felt his lungs being filled up again, constricting his airway. He let out a tiny cough, which only led to a string of coughs, getting significantly worse each second. Feeling his parents eyes on him, Shiro politely excused himself, heading straight towards the bathroom.
Shiro barely made it in the bathroom when he felt the first petal escape his lips. Positioning himself in front of the toilet, he felt another coughing fit coming up. A significant amount of petals came out this time, creating a rainbow of sorts. Purple, red, and yellow petals were coming out of his mouth. His chest felt constricted, as if there were roots taking place right in his lungs. Shiro was too preoccupied with emptying his lungs that he didn’t hear the bathroom door opening. A gasp, however, notified him that his privacy had been breeched. Looking up from the toilet, he saw the horrified look on his father’s face, as if he’d just seen a ghost. Turning away, he wiped his mouth, noticing the blood that showed up on his hand. Shiro felt a hand on his back, rubbing soothing circles as he coughed another round of petals onto the floor, this time white with blue tips.
Once his coughing fit was over, he turned towards his father, who was struggling to keep a calm appearance. Before either of them could speak, Shiro’s mother entered the room, gasping at the scene in front of her. She ran out of the room, most likely to keep Misaki away, before returning. Both of his parents helped him stand, moving him to the dining room. When they finally reached it, Shiro felt his mother’s hand on top of his. Meeting her eyes, he noticed tears streaming down her face. He smiled sadly, wiping them away with his other hand.
“Hey, it’s not that bad,”
She looked at him, not seeming to appreciate his attempt at lightening the situation. Instead, she shook her head. “When did this happen?”
He looked down at his hands. “Two days ago,”
Shiro’s father looked at him, his facade wavering slightly. “When did you meet her?”
Shiro felt himself flinch at that question. He knew that he’d need to tell them about his sexuality, and now was a better time than any he supposed. “I met him last week, on one of my tours.”
He noticed the slight shift in demeanor in his parents, how they subtly looked at each other, then back at him. He also noticed how his mother’s jaw tightened slightly, her tears halting for a minute. Shiro felt tears of his own burn at the corners of his eyes. He didn’t even know that they had fallen until his mother quickly wiped them away with her thumb. Looking up at her, he saw a small smile, not the plastered one he was expecting to receive. She cupped his face with her hands, forcing him to look at her.
“The world is too cruel to you, Takashi,” She hiccuped slightly, more tears streaming down, “You deserve better than this.”
He smiled at her, before a broken sob came out of him. She held him close to her chest, petting his hair soothingly as he cried into her chest, reminiscent of when he was a little kid. Shiro felt his father’s hand on his back.
Once there were no more tears left to cry, Shiro’s father cleared his throat. “So, what’s your plan, Takashi?”
Shiro moved his head away from his mother, his shoulders slightly slumped. “I’ll get the flowers removed.”
He heard his mother gasp at that. “You know what’ll happen if you do that, you can’t—“
“I don’t have a choice mom, it’s not like I’m just looking out for myself anymore,” Shiro interrupted, looking over at Misaki, who was currently oblivious to their conversation.
His mother’s eyes drifted over to Misaki as well, before looking back at him. She sighed, touching his cheek gently. “You deserve so much better,”
Shiro smiled sadly, patting his mother’s shoulders. After a couple of seconds he stood up, saying that it was time for them to go. He walked over to Misaki, who was currently playing with her doll.
“Hey sweetie, it’s time to go,”
She squinted at him, pointing at his eyes. “Why’re your eyes red?”
He smiled, lying through his teeth: “I think I’m allergic to something here. Are you ready to go?”
Misaki nodded, taking Shiro’s hand. They waved goodbye to his parents, heading towards the door before his father called out to him.
“Takashi!”
He turned around, a confused look on his face. His father walked over to the kitchen counter, returning with a folded piece of paper in his hand. He gave it to Shiro, a sad expression crossing his features.
“The doctors found this in Sora’s room, it’s addressed to you,”
Shiro felt the air knocked out of him. He silently took the note, nodding his head. He waved goodbye again, then walked out of the door.
Once they were out he quickly opened the note. Scanning it, he noticed it said the same things that Sora had said to him before, to take care of his daughter and their parents. Continuing down, he looked down at the bottom of the note, feeling his breath taken away from him for a second time today.
“Overall, I want you to be happy. No matter who or what brings you happiness, you should never let go of it. You deserve to live the rest of your life in peace, more than anyone on this planet.”
Shiro thought back to Lance, and how happy the American boy made him. Feeling a small pit of determination, he looked back to his arm, where their last conversation took place.
He needed to make things right.

Chapter 19
Why?
Why was it so hard to tell her?
It should have been so simple! It was only one sentence: “I am Keith.” That was it. Easy.
Keithir growled into his pillow, his ears pinned back as he took a moment to vent his frustration. He really wanted to tell her as they sat there at the overlook on Olkarion, but every time he tried, he couldn't get the words out. Either she beat him to talking by offering him a piece of dessert or one of the local wildlife would make a noise to distract him.
(Okay, so that was a poor excuse. He knew that. He didn't need Thace to tell him that no less than five times since they arrived back at the Castle of Lions.)
At least he managed to surprise her with one final gift – the book on Galran technology he ordered just for her. The beaming smile on her face was well worth the effort he put in to get a copy printed and bound for her, which was rarely done as digital versions were considered easier to deliver and took up less space. Personally, he thought it was nice to have a few physical copies around.
Other than his inability to tell her the truth about his alias, their date to Olkarion had been fantastic. The food was delicious and conversation flowed as they sat and looked out over the forested valley. It was more perfect than he'd dreamed.
Everything about his future had shifted over the course of the last two months, which he had expected when he agreed to Katie's proposal, and yet...
Keithir rolled over onto his side, contemplating his unexpected friendship with the Green Paladin. A friendship which was steadily growing towards something more.
He slowly exhaled.
That was the reason it was so hard.
He liked her.
A lot.
For more reasons than he could accurately put into words.
And it terrified him, liking someone that much. If he went about things the wrong way, telling the truth about “Keith” could ruin the balance they'd established. It could bring down their whole friendship!
That was why he needed the right moment. It was why he didn't march down and knock on her door to tell her the truth.
I don't want to mess this up. The desperate thought seized him, derailing the rest of his thought process. But what if I'm already too late?
“Pidge, you look beautiful!” Allura gushed as Pidge stepped out of the fitting room.
“You said the same thing about the last fine,” Pidge said, twisting to check out her reflection in the mirrors around her. Just like the last five, the dress flowed over her body and down to the floor. The silk-like material was light and the skirt shifted with every movement, while the bodice pressed firm against her, accentuating her slight curves.
Nilani eagerly moved forward to help her arrange the skirt, tutting over the length and altogether simplistic design. “It needs something else. More layers? No, no, that would be too much. Perhaps beading? A lace overlay?” The half-Altean rambled on to her herself, paying no mind to Pidge's put-out expression at the thought of trying on more.
When Nilani invited her down to try on “a couple” of gowns, she'd expected three or four, not the twenty-seven waiting for her once she arrived. And that was after Allura and Lance had to step in to curb Nilani's desire to put her into more elaborate gowns, reminding her that Pidge had requested a simple, more modest style.
Allura cleared her throat. “How do you like it, Pidge?”
“Uh, well...” Pidge tried to focus on her reflection and ignore the way Nilani hovered nearby. It was pretty enough, with wide straps over her shoulders and a scooped neckline that was almost too low for her comfort.
“A no, then,” Allura said, recognizing the uncomfortable pause for what it was. She strode over to the rack of gowns as Pidge stammered out excuses, not wanting it to seem like she hated all of the hard work Nilani was doing to accommodate her.
Nilani herself watched the princess with curiosity in her gaze as Allura went through the rack until she found one that met her approval. She carried it over to Pidge and pushed her back into the dressing room, going right along with her to help unlace the back of the one she had on.
“Sometimes you have to be a little more forceful about these things,” Allura advised in undertone. “Nilani is a brilliant seamstress, but sometimes she gets so caught up in what she's doing and how she can make it even better. Don't forget, this is all about what you want. If you look at it and you don't like it or if you'll feel uncomfortable wearing it, you won't offend her by telling the truth.” She stepped back when the dress was loosened enough for Pidge to slip out of it. “Now tell me, what do you think of this one?”
For a moment, Pidge thought Allura was testing her and she almost turned it away without really looking at it, but the lace turtleneck caught her attention and the more she looked at it, the more she found herself liking it. “I'll try it on.”
Allura beamed.
Daibazaal.
The home world of the Galra.
Pidge was a bundle of nerves as Keithir helped her down from the shuttle and she set foot on Daibazaal for the very first time. There were only a few guards there to meet the pair of them and Shiro, who Keithir picked as their chaperon for the trip. She'd already been told it would be a low-key affair, with few actually knowing the date and time of their visit, so the lack of crowd was an expected thing and helped a little to calm her. At least she wouldn't have a big audience if she messed up.
She held onto Keithir's hand, letting him take the lead while she looked around, mesmerized by the massive, gleaming buildings and the unusual reddish sky. Architecture wasn't really her thing, but that didn't make it any less fascinating to see the stark differences between the more sleek and bright Altean buildings and the sharper edges the Galra were prone to.
They quickly moved into the citadel, escorted by a handful of guards. Keithir was quiet at her side. Actually, he'd been quiet for most of their journey, lost to his thoughts and unusually inattentive.
What if he's changed his mind?
It wasn't the first time that thought crept in to poison her good mood. And just like with the others, Pidge pushed it away. If Keithir had changed his mind, he would tell her. Or she hoped he would. They only had two weeks and three days left until the end of their courtship and then they would make an official announcement of their engagement.
Pidge became hyper aware of how warm Keithir's hand was around her own.
Two more weeks.
She swallowed, glancing up at his face, wondering if he'd realized the same.
Their courtship was coming to an end, bringing their marriage into full focus. She wracked her mind, trying to remember what, if anything, she'd read about Galra engagements. Was there a proposal involved? How was it done? And what about the engagement period? Were there rules or steps to follow for those three months as well, or were they going to be too busy with wedding planning to worry about that? What about--
Keithir gently squeezed her hand. “Is everything okay, Katie?”
“Oh, um, yeah,” Pidge lied unconvincingly. “Sorry, I was just thinking about something. Where are we going first?”
“It's not anything interesting, but I thought I'd show you and Shiro where you'll be staying while we're here. You'll share connected rooms. I hope that's alright,” Keithir said, raising his voice enough for Shiro to hear as well.
“That sounds perfect. What better way for me to keep an eye on Pidge?” Shiro said teasingly.
Pidge rolled her eyes. “Ha ha.”
Shiro took her sarcasm in stride. “Well, that is my job as your chaperon.”
Keithir looked amused by their banter. He waited until he was sure they were done before telling them the rest of his plans for the evening. “Mother and father ave invited us to join them for dinner. After that, I thought I'd show you around the citadel, if you'd like.”
The spark of anxiety that came up every time Pidge thought about talking to Emperor Zarkon fizzled out with the knowledge that Keithir wanted to give her a tour.
But what if--
Pidge violently beat back her dark thoughts as she squeezed Keithir's hand and smiled up at him. “That sounds great.”
He was going to be in so much trouble if Thace found out what he was doing, but he just wanted a quick moment alone with Katie. They were safe at the citadel; not even Lotor would dare try anything right under Zarkon's nose. (Not that he had to worry about that, as he'd been assured Lotor was off-planet.)
Dinner went smoothly thanks to Shiro, who struck up a quiet conversation with Zarkon regarding security at the wedding. Katie seemed much more relaxed without the Emperor's attention on her and it was a relief to see that she was comfortable talking to the Empress when asked about her current projects. All of that gave him the confidence to do what he'd been meaning to do for weeks.
He couldn't keep waiting for the perfect moment to present itself, so he'd have to create one himself.
There was a balcony he loved to relax at. Well, it was more of a retired crosswalk for the guards, which overlooked a stretch of the inner-city to the east. The view was a spectacular one and the wind was rarely harsh.
“Wow,” Katie breathed as she leaned against the rail, gazing out over the capital city.
As much as he wanted to, Keithir didn't allow himself the pleasure of standing back to watch her for long. He walked up next to her, close enough that they were almost touching. “I've always come up here when I wanted to be alone to think. Something about it helps me clear my head. Makes it easier to talk about things.”
His heart was pounding in his chest as he turned to meet her eyes. “Katie, there's something I need to tell you.”
“Is something wrong?” she asked, looking almost afraid to hear the answer.
Keithir shook his head. “No! No, nothing's wrong. I just...” He paused to take a breath. “I'm--”
“Well now, isn't this a pleasant surprise.”
The sound of that voice, thick like too-sweet honey, had Keithir instinctively moving in front of Katie, shielding her from view. He narrowed his eyes as his brother joined them on the balcony. Behind him was his personal servant, who stood back with his head bowed.
“What do you want, Lotor?” Keithir demanded.
Lotor made a show of acting shocked. “Why, I merely saw my dear little brother and his bride-to-be out here all alone and came to say 'hello'. Is that such a crime to you?”
Everything about him was cold and controlled, his voice ringing with a falsely pleasant tone that set Keithir's nerves on edge. Whatever his brother was there for, it certainly wasn't to say “hello”.
“Well now you have. You can go now.” Keithir didn't care if he was being rude. He wanted Lotor as far away from Katie as possible, as soon as possible.
Lotor tutted softly, whether from the demand or something else. “And leave the two of you alone? As your older brother, it is my duty to escort you back to your chaperon. After all, it would be most unfortunate if anything were to happen to you while you're out here all alone.”
Behind him, Katie inhaled sharply at the unspoken threat.
“We can find our own way back,” Keithir said, maintaining eye contact for another few seconds.
Show no fear.
And then, calmly and dismissively, Keithir turned and ushered Katie away from the balcony, wanting nothing more than to get her back to Shiro and off of Daibazaal. His parents would understand his reasons for cutting their trip short.
He needed to talk to Kolivan. Everything about what just happened felt weird to him.
And since when did Lotor have his personal servant follow him around the citadel?
“Keithir?”
A gentle touch to his arm had him slowing down so Katie wasn't running to keep up with him. “Sorry,” he apologized. “I didn't think – He's not supposed to be here. I don't know how he found out we were visiting.”
“It is weird,” Katie agreed, easily keeping pace with him as they descended a flight of stairs. “Shiro needs to hear about this.”
“You can tell him on your way back to Altea.”
“You're coming with us, right?”
Keithir didn't hesitate for a second. “Of course I am.”
I'm not letting you out of my sight.
On impulse, he reached for her hand, threading their fingers together. Katie looked startled by the action, but didn't pull away. Instead, she moved a little closer. And despite everything, a tiny burst of affection settled in Keithir's heart, soothing him.
Whatever Lotor was planning, they'd get through it. Together.

This is very long because the podcasts are getting long, and I don’t want to skimp on the detail but I also don’t want to overwhelm anyone with too much text. Therefore, I will open with bulleted highlights and include a more detailed narrative under the read-more.
Highlights:
Shelby Rabara thinks Peridot letting Steven and Amethyst help her in the episode “Back to the Kindergarten” was a real turning point for her as an expression of trust.
Amber Cragg thinks Peridot is a fantastic “icebreaker” character who is functioning these days as a Crystal Gems mascot.
Peridot’s free time on the weekends, according to Amber, would probably be occupied playing video games like Farmville and trying to make vlogs but failing to edit properly. Shelby thinks she does random art installations.
Peridot’s “clod” catch phrases originated with Ian Jones-Quartey doing an alien impression in the writers’ room, combined with an interpretation of science bros being condescending about concepts like evolution when they could have easily been more gentle and welcoming.
“Marble Madness” combined story elements of discovering the Gems’ pasts with the Gems themselves learning something new about the present.
Rebecca feels that Peridot’s evolution from being a Homeworld flunky to discovering what happens when the system does NOT work for someone is a very important aspect of her character.
Peridot truly believed Homeworld’s philosophy was good for everyone and was not shy about being cruel to those who defied it; Rebecca related this to her experience being a Jewish kid getting shamed for her assumed beliefs by people who honestly thought they were doing her a favor.
Do Gems emerge from the ground with their indoctrination to Homeworld already embedded, or is it taught to them through propaganda? Some of both.
Shelby Rabara, in character as Peridot, suggests the Crystal Temps’ next adventure should involve baking an ube roll with Lars; that she’d like to learn eating so she can make noises; that she’d like to make vinyl pants that can have music embedded in them; and that dogs are the Best Earth Animal.
The detailed summary, including Shelby and Amber discussing Peridot's evolution, Rebecca and Ian discussing Peridot’s origin, and fan questions answered in character . . .
Read it all below!
McKenzie opens by asking storyboard artist Amber Cragg and Peridot's voice actor Shelby Rabara to discuss the episodes "Raising the Barn" and "Back to the Kindergarten." Shelby feels very in suspense when she watches new episodes because it's been so long between when she recorded and when she gets to see it. She loves when Peridot is so depressed lying in the bathroom, with that awful face Paul Villeco drew on her, and how she wants to bring her music to the kindergarten.
Shelby points out that Peridot lets her friends Amethyst and Steven cheer her up, and says it's an act of trust, which is a bit of a turning point for her. Even though Peridot ends up having an outburst and unloading, it's important to know that hope can sometimes come in the form of other people inspiring it in you.
Amber thinks an important aspect is Peridot's energy; she has a ton of it, and she can end up investing it in the wrong place. She was so careful with Lapis that she never wanted to say anything to rock the boat, and Lapis didn't talk back much, so neither really communicated, and it became a disaster of misunderstanding. But sometimes even if you invest energy into what ends up being a wasted effort, it's okay. You have to know when to move on. Amber mentions loving the scene that Katie drew looking at the sunflowers and riding in the train.
McKenzie clarifies that sometimes the issue is it being the wrong person you invest your time and effort into, and sometimes it's the wrong time. You can't fixate too much on ONE thing that has to be perfect or it's all over, or you could end up with nothing. She brings up Peridot's changing love for the Earth and its inhabitants, and asks what they think about that. Shelby thinks Peridot's love has developed partly because of how others there have treated her. Peridot's no longer just a "space Dorito"; she has empathy now. Amber says the Crystal Gems helped her find her roots, and now whether she likes it or not, Earth is home.
McKenzie leads into discussing Peridot's relationships and sense of self. Does Peridot put Amethyst down as defective as a way of increasing her own sense of self-worth? Amber says Peridot first noticed how all the Gems on Earth ignore the rules she's lived her life by forever, and how she's incensed by this at first, only to find she can develop her own personality through ignoring what she was told to be as well. Shelby runs through some interpretations of Peridot's perceptions of the other Gems, seeing Pearl as beneath her, Amethyst as cool despite her flaws, and Garnet as requiring compartmentalization. Shelby brings up Peridot's willingness to let the others show her who they are, and highlights the scene with Peridot being willing to try dancing with Garnet. (Her interpretation is that Peridot's response is to feel dirty and resolve never to try again.)
Still, the Crystal Gems being full of surprises parallels her experience with Earth itself. Peridot herself got to be a complete ham, take herself in whatever direction she wanted and be encouraged by the others. No one will ever stifle her attempts to grow. We can take the message home that we can change even if we're past childhood or adolescence; we can reinvent ourselves and still access support.
McKenzie asks what the other Gems may have learned from Peridot, and Amber says they may have been inspired to see someone new coming into the fold as someone who needed their guidance and help. Amber thinks Peridot almost functions as a mascot--as a source of energy and morale. Everyone loves her, and she's a great "icebreaker" character, inspiring the others to be less blocked in and cautious.
And for her last question to them, McKenzie brings up how Lamar and Rebecca suggested Garnet and Greg play tennis on the weekends; in that light, what do Amber and Shelby think Peridot does? Amber thinks she argues with people on the Internet and is a pro gamer on Farmville (handle: ClodFarmer3000). She probably also tries to make vlogs but can't edit. Maybe she's taking a class in Adobe After Effects. Shelby thinks she does random art installations. Maybe blending in with a tree, not blinking. Or trying to be a mannequin in a clothing store. Or eating french fries and messing with people using her metal powers. She wouldn't let anyone in during her art creation process.
Ian and Rebecca talk origins and concepts:
Peridot was conceived pretty early on. Ian used to bust out with an alien impression in the writers' room, with generic not-understanding-humans statements, and he really wanted to put a similar alien in the show.
The origin of Peridot's favorite word "clod" began with Rebecca and Ian watching the Cosmos remake, which sort of makes you fall in love with science--but then there's another side of it, with people who get mad at religion and are angry with those who don't understand evolution. Ian would do a voice of a "frustrated liberal": "But the Earth was created in seven days!" "No it wasn't, you CLOD." "Evolution is real, CLOD!" They point out that evolution is such a beautiful concept, but some of its proponents want to win you to their side by being mean about it. They believe more in being gentle.
They connected this with Peridot eventually, first starting with Elle Michalka wanting to include a Gem named Peridot combined with Rebecca's inkling that she wanted to handle Steven getting cyberbullied on the show. That didn't exactly come to fruition, but the idea of the person doing it--harassing someone and threatening someone from far away--became Peridot. This worked well with their desire to include discovery of the Gems' pasts and mix that with them learning something new about the present. Rebecca loved the episode "Marble Madness" because they'd written everything referenced in that episode to all be tied in together, dependent on information that had been revealed carefully in previous episodes.
Rebecca enjoyed bringing Peridot in as an example of a Gem who really toes the line and buys Homeworld propaganda; she relates it to her experience growing up Jewish and having other kids tell her they know she's categorically wrong about all of reality based on what box they believed she belonged in. The kids were never shy about telling her what punishment awaited people who don't pick the right religion, and honestly believed they're helping her out by saying these things; Peridot is similar, having never met a Gem for whom the order of the Diamonds was not beneficial, and she is not worried about whether the Crystal Gems' feelings will be hurt if she says so.
Rebecca says Peridot may seem conceited, but she isn't; she knows she's a grunt, a maintenance worker, and is only proud because she knows her place. She believes the others she's meeting are just as not-special as she is, but then she comes to find out there are Gems who were failed by the system, and that changes her outlook. Always before, she thought the Homeworld philosophy really was the best for everyone, but when she finds out it isn't, she also realizes she herself is outside the system. You have to change your thinking when you learn the way things are is bad for some people.
McKenzie then asks about Gem indoctrination; do they pop out of the ground with these beliefs intact, or is it drilled into them? Ian acknowledges this is a big question about the nature of Gems, and they agree it's some of both. Peridot, as a maintenance worker, didn't think about questioning the system because she was just too busy working within it, going to a bunch of different places and learning about them, and also unknowingly absorbing revised history created to edit out what made Homeworld look unsuccessful or imperfect.
Peridot answers questions:
Peridot perks up at the mention of questions sent through Twitter and demonstrates recognition of the medium, and claims she has only taken over the CN Twitter when she's had PERMISSION.
McKenzie: I've heard rumors that you forcibly took over Cartoon Network's social media channels?
Peridot: I wouldn't call it forcibly. I basically did it because I felt like it, but who needs permission these days? I'm Peridot, hello.
McKenzie: That's fair. You are the #1 cartoon character according to that post.
Peridot: Did you see Shelby Rabara congratulated me? I got to talk to SHELBY RABARA. Oh my god. I don't think she knew that I self-proclaimed that I was the #1 cartoon character.
McKenzie: Would you ever consider leading another adventure as the Crystal Temps?
Peridot: I love being the Crystal Temps. I mean, everybody knows that I am The Garnet, the best one. I'm not as good as THE Garnet, but I think Lapis and Connie and myself, I think we would be really really great at baking cakes, specifically ube cakes with Lars.
McKenzie: Interesting! So would Pumpkin accompany you on that one, or would Lars take the place of Pearl?
Peridot: Oh no, Pumpkin definitely would be by my side, who's gonna lick up the extra ube cake when it--I don't wash floors, that's what Pearls do.
McKenzie: Speaking of food, if you could eat anything, what would you want to try first? Cookie Cats, Fry Bits, or something else?
Peridot: I would definitely try fry bits, because there's something about the oil bubbling really violently that makes it really really neat to watch. And apparently when I watch Steven eat the fry bits, he makes this loud noise, so I'm interested in how many loud noises I can make all at the same time.
McKenzie: What is objectively the best Earth pet? There's dogs, cats, hamsters, are you familiar with those?
Peridot: What is the difference between a hamster and--cats?
McKenzie: Cats are larger and they would probably eat a hamster.
Peridot: Oh my god, they eat a hamster? Cats eat hamsters?
McKenzie: They eat mice, which are related to hamsters I'm pretty sure.
Peridot: I ate a Cookie Cat. Was I eating a real cat?
McKenzie: That is a separate thing.
Peridot: Are dogs loyal?
McKenzie: They are. That is their main feature.
Peridot: Okay. Well, Pumpkin is super loyal to me, so if Pumpkin's anything like an Earth dog, I would have to say my final answer would be the best Earth pet is a dog, if it's remotely anywhere near Pumpkin.
McKenzie: What is a piece of Earth fashion that you've always wanted to try on?
Peridot: Is there something called vinyl on Earth? I would like to try on some vinyl pants. Very shiny. I don't know if they're easy to walk in, but something about the vinyl, the scratchy sound it makes. Don't Earth people put music on vinyl? Or am I getting that mixed up with the round thing?
McKenzie: Yeah, they're both called vinyl. They're not on the pants. There's no music in the pants.
Peridot: There should be music in the pants.
McKenzie: Maybe that should be the next step.
Peridot: Is that something that I can contribute to Earth? Making vinyl music pants that can play music while you walk?
McKenzie: I think that that's definitely something you should look into.
Peridot: Peridot, Peridot, Peridot, Peridot is going to own vinyl music pants!
McKenzie: I look forward to getting a pair.
Peridot: Me too. Me too. Me too McKenzie.
McKenzie: What is your favorite part about being a farmer?
Peridot: It is just so amazing to have my hands in the dirt. I love the smell of dirt, I love those white little rock thingies that supposedly help with water drainage. I really enjoy that something like soil has striations in it, just like rock. You have to put the bottom layer with rocks and you have to put some mulch on top, and then on top of that more dirt, and more rocks on top. So there is definitely a way to create soil that has good drainage, has all the yummy stuff for all these flowers and fruits and vegetables to grow in. So I really do believe being a farmer is something that is just ingrained in me.
McKenzie: You take it seriously.
Peridot: I take it very seriously. I am mulching every other day McKenzie. I am getting bags of mulch. Pumpkin likes to eat the mulch, and that's a problem.
McKenzie: If you had a podcast, what would you make yours about?
Peridot: This is a great question. I'm gonna need a moment. Now, what we're doing right now, a podcast, where people listen to us in our podcast, would I be able to have guests come on my podcast?
McKenzie: You can have guests on the podcast.
Peridot: I watched an episode of Mr. Rogers one time. Steven was watching it, so I got to watch it as well. And other than Camp Pining Hearts, that's still my number one show. Mr. Rogers has all these people come on the show and talk about how they make things, like mozzarella cheese. One time this man came on the show and showed how they made mozzarella cheese, and stretched it with their hands and put it in the water after molding it into little balls. I would really like to have maybe the inventor of yellow Post-It sticky pads. I would just wanna know people's thought processes? Like, what makes that glue on the top of the Post-It note? How does a microphone work? Who invented the button? I don't have any buttons on my clothes, obviously, but Steven one time wore a polo shirt with a button. And I was fixated with this little tiny round thing with four holes. I would like to know who made that button. Who are the great minds behind Earthling things?
McKenzie: Buttons have probably been around for a while. I don't know that the person who made buttons is still with us, if you know what I'm getting at.
Peridot: Oh that's a shame.
McKenzie: But I think that the mozzarella cheese thing sounds great!
Peridot: Where do people go?
McKenzie: Um....
Peridot: Is that for the next podcast?
McKenzie: Yeah we'll talk about that next time.
Peridot: Okay.
An episode about Pearl is next week!

Ace Attorney Investigations: Fanfic: Before We Depart...
So, I’m starting the new year with a fic that I had been working on for some time. Honestly though, I just got back into this fandom again after playing AAI2. And after playing Case 3, I just had to write this down.
So here it is! I hope you like it!
Fair Warning: This fic contains spoilers from AAI2, most specifically in case 3
I’d like to give a special thanks to Yobin from Discord for helping with the proofreading for this fic. Thank you so much!
It is also on my AO3 and FF.net
Summary: “I guess now I definitely have more reason to fight for you, and finish cleaning up this mess...”
“Am I right, Katie-pie?”
'Kate, would you have me as your attorney? I’m not quite the same useless kid I was 18 years ago. I won’t let them find you guilty.’
Katherine Hall bowed to everyone as she was then handcuffed and lead out of the building by Detective Gumshoe.
But before they could leave, there was something she had to get off her chest.
“Monsieur Detective…” she spoke up getting his attention. “If you don't mind, I had forgotten to say one last thing to Monsieur Shields.”
Gumshoe looked at her and tilted his head, “Huh? I thought you were done, pal”
“I promise that it won't be long.” she assured him, “You can still accompany me if you'd like. Please, Monsieur…”
The detective then scratched the back of his head as he realized that he couldn't win against her pleas, “Sure, pal. But it better be quick okay?”
“Thank you so much, Monsieur Detective!” She bowed to him in gratitude.
“All right then, pal”
Kate and Gumshoe went back inside the Art Gallery as everyone else was making small talk to ease the tension that was forming around Edgeworth and Judge Courtney as they talk about the P.I.C.
“Huh?” Ray was the first to notice, “What’s wrong Kate? Did something happen?”
“Monsieur Shields!” Kate then quickly came up in front of the attorney, “Monsieur Shields… There is one more thing I had forgotten to say to you.”
Then everyone else at the patio, turned to see what was going on.
“Oh? What is it Katie-pie?” Ray shrugged as the curator looked up to the attorney.
Kate lowered her head trying to hide her reddening face from him. “Well you see…” She spoke up then stopped. “You see, I…”
She then looked up to see the man in front of her. She remembered the first time they met. When he and his mentor were investigating about Mr. Master’s case, otherwise known now as the infamous IS-7 Incident. But that was 18 years ago. Eighteen years of hard work and a single goal in mind. Eighteen years of them doing their damnedest to save him. Eighteen years of working together, visiting together, reminiscing together…
And here, today, it finally ended.
Now that she’s finally been arrested for her own crimes.
But after that… what would be next?
She’d never considered that, at least until now.
She stared at Ray for a second, feeling her heart skip a beat. She smiled and leaned closer to him. “Thank you Monsieur Shields…” She began again, “I….” She felt her voice hitch, blocking her from saying what she truly needed to.
She quickly took a step back, pondering on what she should do now.
“Kate?” Ray dropped his usual act, his face slightly turning pink, but was worried about what she just did, “Are you alright?”
“Yes!” She spoke up (way too quickly) to hide her shyness, “Yes… Monsieur Shields…”
She then resigned in a sigh to herself, as she realized what the situation was now.
Then for the final time, she looked up to the attorney once again, and smiled.
She leaned up closer to him, “Thank you…”
And gave him a light kiss on the cheek.
The gesture had the attorney frozen in place; his mind went blank as he tried to comprehend what just happened to him. As Ray realized what has just transpired in the past few seconds, his face quickly turned to a deep shade of red that would even put Edgeworth’s outfits to shame. He then touched his cheek that was just kissed.
Meanwhile, Kay cheered out, “Way to go Mr. Shields!”
Gumshoe was quite shocked to see this, “Hey! Lucky you, pal!”
And Laurice--Larry yelled out in grief, “Aww man! Even Katie’s got this guy! What about me?!”
Then Edgeworth shot a glare at his friend wordlessly said that he never stood a chance in the first place. But truly even the prosecutor found this scene a little surprising.
Delicia giggled at the sight, “Yessie! I knew there was something up between you two!”
Judge Courtney also chuckled in amusement, “Oh my…”
Sebastian then finally spoke up, leaning against Courtney to ask, “So, uhh… what exactly is going on?”
“K-Kate!” Ray mumbled as everyone’s comments in the background fell into deaf ears.
The curator then stood back and gave him another smile to him as she herself, started to blush heavily,
“Monsieur Shields… I mean, Ray…
Thank you for everything. At least take that gesture as a token of my appreciation for all those years…” She turned around and walked towards the Detective, who was still in shock. “Thank you for your help Monsieur Detective, I shall follow you now.”
“Uhh…” At the sound of her voice, Gumshoe snapped out of his daze, and was beginning to feel a little guilty for doing this...
“Yeah sure, pal…”
“Kate! Wait!” Ray shouted before his brain could even process what he had done, “I…”
Kate turned to face the attorney, as she wondered why he would stop her now.
“I…” Ray thought of what to say. He had so much to say… But to him, it didn't seem appropriate.
For eighteen years he had loathed himself and his abilities as a lawyer. He had lost count of how many times he’d wanted to give up. But for all of those times, he’d had just as many where he’d managed to pick himself up and move on. He knew that he wasn’t alone in this battle. After all, they’d spent eighteen years working hard to get this far.
Was this the end?
“I guess…” Ray sighed; he finally knew what he needed to say. “I guess now I definitely have more reason to fight for you, and finish cleaning up this mess...” he held on to his beloved hat, “Am I right, Katie-pie?”
Katherine was shocked to hear those words from him. She was already touched that he immediately wanted to defend her in court, but to then see the determination within him, and the desire to create happy ending for all of them...
“Yes, of course!” She nodded tearfully at him. “I shall see you soon… Ray.”
Ray could only tip his hat at her as she was taken away.
“Finish cleaning up what mess?” Kay questioned.
The ace attorney shrugged, “It’s something we kinda forgot about from 18 years ago. Don’t you worry about it, okay, Kay?” And with that, he was back to his usual self, as if nothing had ever happened.
A few years later….
Raymond Shields stood and waited, nervously. He paced back and forth, stared at the wall, at the table, and even at the guard until said guard tripped over himself.
“Raymond…” Jeff Master tried to assure him, “It is going to be alright. It took a while for me to be released too, after all.”
Ray sighed, “You’re right but… it's not just that that I’m worried about…”
“Worried?” The chef questioned. “What do you mean by worried?”
“It’s nothing…” He tried to brush it off, hoping the chef wouldn’t notice, “It’s just something… we have to finish…”
“I see…”
Then after what felt like eternity for the attorney, Detective Gumshoe came to them, “Well, here she is, pal!”
And behind the large man was Katherine Hall, finally released from prison, having finished her short sentence.
“Kate!” Ray rushed towards her and held her delicate hands, “Oh, Kate…”
“Ray!” Kate beamed at him, relieved that the wait was finally over. “Kate, I…” he then lifted her hand and kissed it, “Shall we finish this, then Kate?” He slid his hand to his pocket to grab something, “Will you---?”
Before he could even finish his sentence, Kate swiftly leaned forward to kiss him, only not on the cheek this time, but on the lips. It only took a quick second for Ray to register everything this time and then released whatever he had on his pocket to cup her face as he pulled her closer and deepened the kiss.
Jeffrey Master was shocked by this sudden scene. While he knew that the two had deep feelings for each other, to see it unfold in front of him was a completely different experience. Nevertheless, he was overjoyed to see that they found happiness with each other.
Detective Gumshoe could just cry from seeing this. No, he is actually crying right now. Ever since he took her away to be arrested, he’d been hoping for a day like this come.
Even the guards started tearing up from the scene.
As they broke away to breathe, the two stared into each other’s eyes as Kate gave him a proper answer, “Yes… of course I do!” “You read my mind…”
They then reconvened their kiss, as they finally finished what they started all those years ago.
