Reading the Books of Sayyid Qutb
Do you advise the youth to read Sayyid Quṭb's books, and what is your opinion on Shaykh Rabīʿs books about Sayyid Quṭb, especially since some warn against them? هل تنصح الشباب بقراءة كتب سيد قطب وما هو قولكم في كتب الشيخ ربيع في سيد قطب وخاصة أن البعض يحذر منها؟ Sayyid Quṭb is considered a literary figure. He lived in disbelief for eleven years, سيد قطب يعتبر أديباً من الأدباء مكث مع الالحاد إحدى عشرة سنة then Allah, the Sublime and Exalted, guided him. ثم هداه الله سبحانه وتعالى، هداه الله سبحانه وتعالى He did not sit with al-ʿulamāʾ (ie: the scholars); ولم يجالس العلماء؛ he relied on his own fikr (ie: thoughts). اعتمد على فكره، He is considered a literary figure among those whom the verse of Allah, the Almighty, applies: {And the poets - [only] the deviators follow them; Do you not see that they roam in every valley and that they say what they do not do? - Except those who believe, do righteous deeds, remember Allah often, and defend themselves after they were wronged. And those who have wronged are going to know to what [kind of] return they will be returned} (26:224-227). So I ask the questioner: Have you read the entire “Tafsīr Ibn Kathīr”? فأنا أسأل السائل: أأنت قرأت كله؟، Have you read the entire “Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī”? أأنت قرأت كله؟، Have you read the entire “Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim”? أأنت قرأت كله؟، Have you read the entire “Musnad Aḥmad”? أأنت قرأت كله؟، Have you read the entire “Sunan Abū Dāwūd”? أأنت قرأت كلها؟، Have you read the entire “Jāmīʿ at-Tirmiḏī”? أأنت قرأت كله؟، Have you read the entire “Sunan al-Nasāʿī”? أأنت قرأت كلها؟، Or is it (only) after Sayyid Quṭb (that you will read those)? أم بعد سيد قطب؟!، Some people have become extremists in takfīr (ie: declaring Muslims as unbelievers) just by reading Sayyid Quṭb's books because of his frequent mention of “al-Ṭaġūt” and “al-Ṭaġūt.” بعض الناس أصبح بسبب قراءته في كتب سيد قطب أصبح من جماعة التكفير!!، بسبب نهجه وإكثاره من (الطاغوت)، و(الطاغوت)، Yes, we say: al-Ṭaġūt; but many times, we do not mean that this (Ṭaġūt) is outside the religion of Islām. نعم إننا نقول: الطاغوت؛ ولكن في كثير من الأوقات لا نعني أنه خارج من دين الإسلام. Therefore, I do not recommend reading the books of Sayyid Quṭb, فأنا لا أنصح بقراءة كتب سيد قطب، nor the books of Muḥammad al-Ġazzālī, ولا بقراءة كتب محمدٍ الغزالي، nor the books of Muḥammad Quṭb, ولا بقراءة كتب محمد قطب، nor the books of Zaynab al-Ġazzālī. ولا بقراءة كتب زينب الغزالية، Brothers, read the books of the Sunnah; يا إخواننا اقرؤوا كتب السنة؛ the book “Kitāb al-Tawḥīd” on the names and attributes of Allah by Ibn Khuzaymah, كتاب في الأسماء والصفات لابن خزيمة، “al-Sunnah” by Ibn Abī ʿĀṣim, لابن أبي عاصم، “al-Sharīʿah” by al-Ājurrī, للآجري، “Sharḥ al-Sunnah” by al-Lālikāʿī, للالكائي، “al-Sunnah” by Muḥammad b. Naṣr al-Marwazī, لمحمد بن نصر المروزي، the book “al-Īmān” by al-Qāsim b. Sallam, كتاب للقاسم بن سلام، and so on from the kutub ʿulamāʾnā al-mutaqaddimīn (ie: books of our earlier scholars). وهكذا من كتب علماءنا المتقدمين Allah has preserved His religion: {Indeed, it is We who sent down the ḏikr (the Qurʾān) and indeed, We will be its guardian} (15:9). فالله قد حفظ دينه: " إِنَّا نَحْنُ نَزَّلْنَا الذِّكْر وَإِنَّا لَهُ لَحَافِظُونَ ". I do not declare Sayyid Quṭb an unbeliever; ولست أكفر سيد قطب؛ however, I say that his books should not be relied upon, ولكن أقول: إنه لا يعتمد عليه في كتبه، and may Allah reward our brother Rabīʿ b. Hādī, may Allah preserve him, who has advised and clarified the deviations and misguidances in the books of Sayyid Quṭb, and all praise is due to Allah. وجزى الله أخانا ربيع بن هادي حفظه الله تعالى خيراً فقد نصح وبين ما في كتب سيد قطب من الزيغ والضلال والحمد لله. Allah calls Himself Ar-Rahmaan— The Most Gracious, the intensely Merciful— on 55 occassions in the Quran and 133 times in the basmalah. Ar-Rahmaan is the One whose intense and perfect Mercy embraces the whole creation!
The Most Gracious, Most Lovingly Beneficent
Rahmaan comes from the root raa-haa-meem, which points to four main meanings. The first meaning is to have gentleness and to love, and the second is to have mercy. The third meaning is to show favour, and the fourth meaning is to have all that is required for beneficence.
This root appears 339 times in the Quran in nine derived forms. Examples of these forms are rahima (“bestows mercy”), al-arhaam (the wombs”) and rahmatan (“mercy”).
Linguistically, rahmaan shows intensity (thus the ending is –aan). For example ghadbaan means extremely angry. Ar-Rahmaan points out to the intensity, abundance, and vastness of the mercy (rahmah) of Allah ‘azza wajal, and the attribute of grace is inseperable from the Almighty.
Allah first mentioned His name – Allah – that is exclusively His and described this name by Ar-Rahmaan, which no one else is allowed to use, just as Allah said, Say (O Muhammad) invoke Allah or invoke Ar-Rahmaan, by whatever name you invoke Him (it is the same), for to Him belong the Best names. [Quran, 17:110] [Tafseer ibn Katheer]
Ar-Rahmaan Himself says: [This is] a revelation from the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful . . . [Quran, 41:2] That Day, no intercession will benefit except [that of] one to whom the Most Merciful has given permission and has accepted his word. [Quran, 20:109]
The mercy of Allah
Explaining the mercy of Allah, ar-Rahmaan, the Prophet salallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam said: Allah has divided mercy into 100 parts, and He retained with Him 99 parts, and sent down to earth one part. Through this one part creatures deal with one another with compassion, so much so that an animal lifts its hoof over its young lest it should hurt it. [Al-Bukharee] Be amazed at the fact that the other 99 parts are yet to come and they are with Allah Himself. You will not enter Jannah because of your deeds, but by the rahmah of Allah only.
The Prophet salallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam also said, When Allah created the creatures, He wrote in the Book, which is with Him over His Throne: Verily, My Mercy prevailed over My Wrath. [Al-Bukharee]
How can you live by this name?
1. Never despair.
No matter how many sins you commit, He can have mercy on you if you just turn to Ar-Rahmaan. Every mistake or sin is an opportunity and a sign that it’s time to get closer to Him! Whenever you commit a sin, call Him by this name to have mercy on you and remind yourself of one of the most optimistic ayaat in the Quran: Say, O My servants who have transgressed against themselves [by sinning], do not despair of the mercy of Allah. Indeed, Allah forgives all sins. Indeed, it is He who is the Forgiving, the Merciful. [Quran 39:53].
2.Be merciful to others.
Be merciful to not only the needy but also to your family if you want the mercy of Ar-Rahmaan! The Prophet salallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam said: Allah will not be merciful to those who are not merciful to the people. [Al-Bukharee] The Prophet salallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam gave a simple formula on how to deal with others: Whoever wishes to be delivered from the fire and enter the garden should die with faith in Allah and the Last Day and should treat the people as he wishes to be treated by them. [Muslim] So no matter how big or small, think how you would like to be treated in the same situation.
3.Keep family ties.
Be active in being in touch with your family: regularly visit, call, and exchange gifts, and never abandon your family. The Prophet salallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam said: . . The womb (rahm) is derived from the Merciful, so whoever keeps relations with his family then Allah will keep relations with him, and whoever abandons his family then Allah will abandon him. [At-Tirmidhee] Be the first to make up after an argument. The Prophet salallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam said: It is not permitted for a Muslim to forsake his brother for more than three (days); whoever does this and dies, he will enter Hell. [Abu Dawud]
4. Be good to your parents.
Daily ask Ar-Rahmaan to have mercy on your parents! Ar-Rahmaan instructs you: And your Lord has decreed that you not worship except Him, and to parents, good treatment. Whether one or both of them reach old age [while] with you, say not to them [so much as], “uff,” and do not repel them but speak to them a noble word. And lower to them the wing of humility out of mercy and say, “My Lord, have mercy upon them as they brought me up [when I was] small. [Quran, 17:23-24]
5. Recognize mercy and be grateful.
Reflect upon Allah’s mercy when you see all the blessings around you; food, water, oxygen. Only Ar-Rahmaan can make it rain and He made the rain sweet and not salty. When you love someone or are loved, know that this feeling was manifested by the mercy of Allah. Think about the mercy of Ar-Rahmaan in sending the Prophet Muhammad salallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam to you, and be intensely happy and grateful to have such a merciful Lord.
Note: We have to be careful if translating the names of Allah ‘azza wa jall into a different language. The name Ar-Rahmaan is most commonly translated as The Most Merciful, The Entirely Merciful, The Most Gracious.
O Allah, Ar-Rahmaan, we know that Your mercy is perfect. Let us never despair of Your mercy, guide us to be merciful to others, to maintain our family ties, and to seek Your pleasure. Enable us to reflect on Your mercy around us, adorn us with gratefulness, and enter us into Paradise by Your mercy, ameen!

…And get two witnesses out of your own men. And if there are not two men (available), then a man and two women, such as you agree for witnesses, so that if one of them (two women) errs, the other can remind her…”
[al-Baqarah 2:282 – interpretation of the meaning]
With regard to the phrase, “that if one of them (two women) errs”, Ibn Katheer said: “This means, the two women, if one of them forgets the testimony, then ‘the other can remind her’, i.e., she can remind her about the matter concerning which testimony is being given.” (Tafseer Ibn Katheer, part 1, p. 724)

Allah calls Himself Al-‘Afuww—The Pardoner, The Eliminator of Sins, The Effacer— on five occasions in the Quran. He is the One who can make any sin or mistake disappear. Al-‘Afuww not only forgives but can also remove wrong actions, errors, and faults, leaving no trace of them!
The One who eliminates sins, The Pardoner
‘Afuww comes from the root ‘ayn-faa-waw, which points to three main meanings. The first main meaning is to forgive and pardon and the second is to efface and remove. The third main meaning is to give willingly and  more than what is due.
This root appears 35 times in the Quran in four derived forms.  Examples of these forms are ‘afaa(forgave), al-‘afwa (the surplus, (to) forgiveness)  and wal ‘aafeena (those who pardon).
Linguistically, ‘afw refers to two concepts, one of which is to remove all traces. In the Arabic language it is sometimes used with wind referring to its blowing and removing of footprints etc. The other concept is to willingly give others without constraint. Al-‘Afuww is the One who removes and erases someone’s sins, mistakes, errors and faults and their traces and consequently becomes pleased with one. He is the One who then grants them blessings willingly without even being asked!
Al-‘Afuww Himself says: Indeed, Allah is ever Pardoning and Forgiving [Quran, 4:43]  . . . For those it is expected that Allah will pardon them, and Allah is ever Pardoning and Forgiving [Quran, 4:99] and .. If [instead] you show [some] good or conceal it or pardon an offense – indeed, Allah is ever Pardoning and Competent. [Quran, 4:149]
Difference between pardoning and forgiving
Of the five times, Allah’s name Al-‘Afuww is mentioned four times with His name Al-Ghafoor (The Forgiving) in the Quran.  Allah ‘azza wa jallmight forgive some people and pardon others. Forgiving means that Allah ‘azza wa jall conceals our sins and mistakes and we will not be punished for them on the Day of Judgement. However, they are still there in our book of deeds. When Allah pardons the sins of people, the sins are completely erased from their book of deeds; He will not even remind them of their sins, nor question them, simply because their sins have been removed. Pardon is greater than forgiveness!
Grave sins and pardon in the Quran
Allah’s pardon is mentioned in the Quran along with grave sins, such as Baani Israeel who worshipped the calf: Then We forgave you after that so perhaps you would be grateful. [Quran, 2:52] And those who turned away at the battle of Uhud: Then he turned you back from them [defeated] that He might test you. And He has already forgiven you, and Allah is the possessor of bounty for the believers. [Quran, 3:152] This is the beautiful pardon of Al-‘Afuww!

How can you live by this Name?
1.Pardon others.
The people who surpress anger and pardon others are the people of Paradise. Al-‘Afuww says: Who spend [in the cause of Allah] during ease and hardship and who restrain anger and who pardon the people – and Allah loves the doers of good [Quran, 3:134] Ibn Katheer mentions: They forgive those who treat them with injustice. Therefore, they do not hold any ill feelings about anyone in their hearts, and this is the most excellent conduct in this regard.
Fight against your ego and ask Al-‘Afuww to help you to not even leave a trace of bad feelings and resentment in your heart. If someone wrongs you, think about your own sins and those who you wronged. Strive to pardon others so that Allah ‘azza wa jall may pardon you!
2. Don’t remind others of their mistakes.
Al-‘Afuww is the One who pardons with no reproach. After overlooking other people’s mistakes or wrong actions towards you, try not to remind them of these bad deeds afterwards. Allah ‘azza wa jall is the One who pardons and never mentions your sins again!
3. Increase your love.
Imagine Allah ‘azza wa jall pardoned all your past sins; not a single sins would be recorded in your book of deeds. Reflect on how much you should love Al-‘Afuww! A beautiful opportunity is Laylatul Qadr, which comes once a year in Ramadhan. Value this crucial night, seek it with your best deeds, and remind yourself that night and every other night how beautiful the pardoning of Allah ‘azza wajal is!
4. Say this dua from your heart.
A beautiful dua with this name is the one the Prophet salallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam taught Aishah radiyallahu ‘anhaa, when she asked him: “O Messenger of Allah! If I find the Night of Al-Qadr what should I say?” He sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam replied, say:
O Allah! Verily You are the Oft-Pardoning, You love to pardon, so pardon me [Ahmad, At-Tirmidhee, An-Nasaa’i, Ibn Majah] Memorize this dua and beg Al-‘Afuww with is sincerely. Recognize your sins, be humble and then aim high, not only asking your Lord for forgiveness, but for Him to pardon each and every sin you committed!

O Allah, Al-‘Afuww, we know that You can erase all sins. Grant us the strength to pardon others and make us reflect on Your love and blessings upon us. Aid us to obey you and guide us in keep asking You sincerely to pardon all our sins, mistakes, neglect, errors and faults so we will not even be questioned about them on the Day of Judgement, ameen!

🌷The Importance of Lowering the Gaze🌷
by Asma bint Shameem
BOTH men and women are expected to be chaste and modest and avoid any kind of behavior that may invite temptation.
BOTH are instructed to look only at what is lawful for them to see and to guard their chastity.
Allaah commands the men first and then the women in the Qur’aan, to lower their gaze.
🍃Allaah says:
“Tell the believing men to lower their gaze and guard their chastity. That is purer for them. Indeed, Allaah is acquainted with what they do.
And tell the believing women to lower their gaze and guard their chastity and not display their beauty except what [must ordinarily] appear thereof; and to wrap part of their head covers over their chests and not display their beauty except to their husbands, their fathers, their husbands’ fathers, their sons, their husbands’ sons, their brothers or their brothers’ sons, or their sisters’ sons.”
al-Noor 24:31]
🍃Imaam Ibn Katheer said:
“This is a command from Allaah to His believing slaves to lower their gaze and refrain from looking at that which is forbidden to them.
So they should not look at anything except that which they are permitted to look at, and they should lower their gaze and refrain from looking at forbidden things.
If it so happens that a person’s gaze accidentally falls upon something forbidden, he should quickly avert his gaze.”
(Tafseer Ibn Katheer, 3/282)
🍃Jareer ibn ‘Abd-Allaah Radhi Allaahu anhu said:
“I asked the Messenger of Allaah Sal Allaahu Alayhi wa Sallam about a sudden glance, and he commanded me to avert my gaze.”
(Saheeh Muslim, 2159)
🍃Imaam al-Nawawi said:
“What is meant by a “sudden glance” is when a person’s glance unintentionally falls upon a non-mahram woman. There is no sin on him for the first glance, but he must avert his gaze immediately.
If he averts his gaze immediately there is no sin on him, but if he continues looking, then he will be a sinner, because of this hadeeth, for the Prophet Sal Allaahu Alayhi wa Sallam commanded him to avert his gaze, and Allaah says:
“Tell the believing men to lower their gaze (from looking at forbidden things)”
[al-Noor 24:30]
Men must lower their gaze and refrain from looking at them in all circumstances, unless that is for a valid shar’i reason, such as giving testimony, medical treatment, wanting to propose marriage, buying a slave woman, engaging in financial transactions such as buying and selling, etc. In all these cases it is permissible to look as much as is needed, and no more.”
(Sharh Muslim, 14/139)
🔺How to lower your gaze:
1️⃣ Know and believe with *certainty* that Allaah is watching us.
He sees us and is with us (by His knowledge) wherever we go.
*Nothing* escapes Him.
It is recorded in our book of deeds.
And we will have to answer to Allaah for each and every word and deed even if no one knew about it.
🍃Allaah says:
“Allaah knows the fraud of the eyes, and all that the hearts conceal”
[Ghaafir 40:19]
🍃And Allaah says:
“But verily, over you (are appointed angels in charge of mankind) to watch you,
Kiraaman (Honourable) Kaatibeen —writing down (your deeds),
They know all that you do”
[al-Infitaar 82:10-12]
2️⃣ Make duaa to Allaah and ASK him to help you lower the gaze and not look at anything that’s forbidden.
If you’re sincere in your duaa, He will definitely help you.
3️⃣ Know that your eyes are one of the biggest blessings of Allaah upon you.
And part of thanking Allaah for those blessings is to use these eyes and other faculties in His obedience and keep them away from all that’s forbidden.
🍃 Ibn al-Qayyim said:
“Gratitude should be:
in the heart, in submission and humility;
on the tongue, in praise and acknowledgement;
and in the physical faculties, by means of obedience and submission.”
(Madaarij al-Saalikeen (2/246)
4️⃣ Work hard in controlling your gaze and keep training yourself until you master it.
🍃 The Prophet ﷺ said:
“Whoever seeks to be chaste, Allaah will make him chaste, and whoever seeks to be independent of means, Allaah will make him independent of means, and whoever strives to be patient, Allaah will make him patient…”
(al-Bukhaari, 1400)
5️⃣ Don’t go to places where you know inappropriately dressed women will be present like the mall or the beach or weddings or other places unless it’s necessary.
🍃 The Prophet ﷺ said:
“Beware of sitting in the street.”
They said, “We have no alternative; that is where we sit and talk.”
He said, “If you insist on sitting there, then give the street its rights.”
They said, “What are the rights of the street?”
He said, “Lowering the gaze and refraining from causing offence…”
(al-Bukhaari 2333, Muslim 2121).
6️⃣ Keep yourself busy with good deeds, dhikr and ibaadaat. And pay special attention to the five daily prayers.
🍃 Allaah says:
“Verily, As‑Salaah (the prayer) prevents from Al‑Fahshaa’ (i.e. great sins of every kind, unlawful sexual intercourse) and Al‑Munkar (i.e. disbelief, polytheism, and every kind of evil wicked deed)”
[al-‘Ankaboot 29:45]
🍃 And Allaah said:
“… and My slave continues to draw close to Me with supererogatory (naafil) works so that I shall love him.
And when I love him, I am his hearing with which he hears, his seeing with which he sees, his hand with which he strikes and his foot with which he walks.
Were he to ask (something) of Me, I would surely give it to him, and were he to ask Me for refuge, I would surely grant him it.”
(al-Bukhaari, 6137
7️⃣ Keep good company.
Your righteous friends will help you to obey Allaah.
🍃 The Prophet sal Allaahu Alayhi wa sallam said:
“A man is upon the ways of his best friend, so let one of you look at whom he befriends.”
(Abu Dawood - hasan by al-Albaani)
And that’s why the Prophet sal Allaahu Alayhi wa sallam warned us from making friends with those that are not religious or righteous.
🍃 He Sal Allaahu Alaiyhi wa Sallam said:
“Do not keep company with anyone but a believer and do not let anyone eat your food but one who is pious.”
(al-Tirmidhi, 2395; Abu Dawood, 4832; hasan by al-Albaani in Saheeh al-Tirmidhi, 2519)
8️⃣ Get married and fast frequently.
🍃 The Prophet ﷺ said:
“Whoever can afford it, let him get married, for it is more effective in lowering the gaze and in guarding one’s chastity. And whoever cannot afford it, let him fast, for it will be a shield for him.”
(al-Bukhaari 1806, Muslim 1400).
And there are other ways.
And Allaah knows best
