SJMaasening Progress Report:

1) have been dismayed to have two people I love tell me that this second book is the best one,

2) also right after promising that I would read three of these damn books in payment for recommending Shades of Magic to my mother (I'll rec Uprooted and Spinning Silver if she and my sister insist on me reading the rest of the currently published ones), I saw that the third one is unfortunately the longest one,

3) I have finally made it to part three of this second book and am on chapter 52 out of 69. I have managed to turn off my brain a little. I do hit bumps in the road where I think "wait a minute, that doesn't make sense or line up with what has come before", but I take a breath and keep going. I can't say I'm having fun, but the time is passing!

45 books. 18,640 pages. 2022 brought so many adventures, laughs, tears, heartbreaks, fears and joyous moments. I fell in love with characters that ruined my life with their beauty and love. And I passionately hated others just as well.

Here are the books I read in June! After not reading a single book for two years I finally got back into it this year. I feel way behind when it comes to the current reads lol. But I started simple and spicy with the Dark Olympus series! I threw in The Orchardist only because I love the cover and it’s been on my shelf for three years, and I was actually pretty satisfied with the story. Then I finally started the ACOTAR series and fell in love with SJM. Stay tuned for my July Reads! 🥹

Even when I don’t like an artist’s works, I have respect for them for their discipline and dedication to the craft. But that’s hard to muster for SJM. I was told one of her favourites is Anne Bishop’s The Black Jewels series which could have been an influence for the vivid and unnecessary violence in her plots. I haven’t read those books and so I googled it.

One of the major character is Lucivar Yaslana who is Half-Hayllian/Half-Eyrien which sounds suspiciously close to Illyrian. And in fanart, he is depicted with (surprise surprise) bat like wings which are uncannily like the Illyrian wings, and mind you, the first book in this series came out in 1998.

Going through the plot in wiki, there are a lot of names or titles that are similar to the ones in ACOTAR. Prythian. High Priestess. Whore/Consort. Dark Court and First Circle. One of the books’ title is Dreams Made Flesh, and that instantly reminded me of the Made weapons and the phrases often associated with them but that could be nothing. Even the male lead Daemon has quite similar experiences as Rhysand.

Since I don't have much authority in this case to call out SJM or her books, here are some from people who have read both series.

I would love for the SJM fans who think she invented commonly used genre conventions to read the Black Jewels trilogy and tell me Cassian isn't a direct result of Lucivar existing (or Rhys and Daemon, for that matter).

By author Katee Robert although she said this in favour of authors reimagining tropes.

Black Jewels is explicitly dark fantasy and deals with and normalises strong themes such as abuse and sex slavery to name a few. It explains why abuse is romanticised in ACOTAR as well since SJM seems to have copied so much from these books. Given the initial drafts of the sequels were scraped off after TAR received much appreciation, there’s no excuse that this was only a fanfic that developed into an original series. Though the plot development and most characters like Tamlin are her own, some key plot points or motivations leading up to it might not be. Her books are applauded as original and unparalleled fantasy of this age by many young readers but the foundations of her world-building heavily imitates Bishop’s own.

A quick google search proves Maas is more popular than Bishop, so is ACOTAR over the Black Jewel series, and maybe it’s the reason why not many are talking about this. Drawing inspiration from real world and existing art or paying homage to one’s favourites is understandable and healthy but what SJM does seems dangerously like rip off.

Point of order: I'm a picky bitch. The amount of books I've read vs the books I'd actually put on a bookshelf are like.... maybe 20, taking into account most of them are part of a series. Tho tbf most of the 'good books' I want aren't on KU and I'm kinda fucking broke. Also yes, the early days of booktok got me back into reading after a 10+ year slump in case that wasn't about to become insanely obvious.

1) The last book I read:

Fake It Till You Make It by Flora Quincy. Been on the hunt for more omegaverse books, but this one was terrible >< DNF'd.

2) A book I recommend:

I don't know how not to sound like a basic bitch broken record, but for the love of god go read A Court of Thorns and Roses by Sarah J Maas. Just stop after book three in the series.

3) A book that I couldn’t put down:

Blood and Ash by Jennifer L Armentrout. Binged the first three books (that were out) in two days. Wish I could afford the rest.

4) A book I’ve read twice (or more):

Hi. Basic bitch again :) A Court of Mist and Fury by Sarah J Maas. You have no idea what this book meant to me the first time I read it and the strength it gave me to open my eyes and see that I was worth so much more.

5) A book on my TBR:

Currently there are about 28 of varying excitement to read (most of it is what I refer to as 'junk food'), but I've got an upcoming release in September for the fourth book in the Beasts of the Briar series by Elizabeth Helen called Broken By Daylight I'm looking forward to.

6) A book I’ve put down:

Exodus by Kate Stewart. I was prepared to put this series as one of my all time favorites with the way I felt falling in love with Sean and Dom, but after that... refused to read more. Genuinely devastated, still not over it. Haven't looked at rainy days the same ever since.

Also just because it still bothers me - House of Flame and Shadow by Sarah J Maas. What the fuck girl?! The first one was so good and I praise so much of your work! But it's like ever since ACOTAR book 4 came out you've just dropped the ball...

7) A book on my wish list:

Fourth Wing by Rebecca Yarros. Hopefully it's better than some of the other dragon books I've tried recently.

8) A favorite book from childhood:

The Sight by David Clement-Davies. It's a fantasy book that follows a pack of wolves and their daughter who has visions. Have tissues on hand.

Tbh, I am not anti-anybody (not even Anti-Rhys, even when all my Rhys -bashing stories could tell you another story lol.)

With a lot of Acotar characters I love the idea of them…and then hate like they are written. Like Mor for example is so underutilised in canon…we are 5 books into this series and we still don’t know what exactly her power of Truth is even supposed to be. Can she make things be true? Does she always speak the truth? What is it? I have no damn clue.

With Mor my problem is her treatment of Azriel over centuries. I am way more likely to give the Archeron sisters a pass than anybody from the IC because these people are literally 500 YEARS old. They should know better. And instead Mor just keeps treating Azriel abhorrently, uses his feelings for her against him and literally nobody says anything. They just let her do it? Like what?!
