"I want you to keep away from her."
Azriel held back a sigh.
He should have expected something like this probably... but it was still pissing him off.
Azriel kept his expression carefully neutral as he met Rhys' gaze. "Why?" he asked simply, his voice giving nothing away.
Rhys scowled, crossing his arms. "Because I say so," he said firmly. "I don't want you anywhere near her."
Azriel held back a snort. "Out of pure interest," he drawled. "Why exactly are you suddenly this interested in what female I pursue?"
Rhys clenched his jaw, his irritation mounting at Azriel's questioning. "I'm not interested in the specifics," he said gruffly. "I just don't want you anywhere near her, that's all'."
"You don't want me near Elain and you don't want me near Cate," Azriel said drily. “Anybody else?”
Rhys bristled at Azriel's words, his eyes narrowing. "This isn't about Elain," he said hotly. "This is about Cate. And I don't want you anywhere near Cate, understood?"
Azriel raised an eyebrow, his own irritation rising. "And why, pray tell, do you get to dictate who I spend my time with?" he asked, his voice deceptively casual.
Rhys bristled at Azriel's tone, his irritation growing.
"Because I'm the High Lord, and this is my court," he said, his voice taking on a cold, authoritative tone. "And I don't want you involved with her."
Azriel rolled his eyes, his patience wearing thin. "And what's your reason for that?" he asked, his voice dripping with sarcasm. "Afraid she'll give me cooties?"
Rhys visibly bristled, his irritation clear in his eyes.
"Damnit, Azriel, you know it's not about that," he snapped "She's not right for you. She's too powerful, too unpredictable. She'll only cause trouble and chaos."
Azriel let out a scoff, his own irritation rising. "And who are you to say who's right for me?" he shot back. "You don't know a thing about her, or about my own feelings."
Didn't know how sometimes Cate was the only one who understood him...who didn't judge him...who said nothing and just listened.
"I know enough to say she's trouble," Rhys said firmly. "And that's all I need to know. She doesn't belong here, and she doesn't belong with you."
"Speak for yourself," Azriel answered calmly. "I know her. She knows me. I trust her."
He did know her. He knew her better than anybody else in his life. He trusted her with his life and he trusted her to act in the best interest of Prythian.
Rhys's eyes widened, his anger replaced by surprise and disbelief. "You...you trust her?" he asked, his voice filled with incredulity. "After everything I've said, after everything I've warned you about, you still trust her? You know some of the things that she has done!"
Azriel didn't flinch.
"She isn't the only person with blood on her hands," he responded evenly.
She really wasn’t. He had done worse than her. At least Cate had always acted on behalf of Fate and the vision that came to her. She did what needed to be done to make the best vision come to life.
He had just slaughtered people on the orders of Rhys’ father.
Rhys bristled at Azriel's response, his face tightening with anger. "That's entirely different, and you know it," he snapped. "We may have blood on our hands, but we do what we do for the betterment of this court, of the Night Court. We have a responsibility to protect our people and our land. You cannot compare us to her."
"Can't we?" Azriel asked. As far as he cared…they were much more similar than Rhys would like. "She has her reasons, Rhys, if you believe it or not."
"She could have killed Amarantha and she didn't!" Rhys bit out.
Oh.
Azriel should have realised that that was going to be the sticking point.
He knew where Cate had spent these 50 years. Keeping an eye on Hybern. He had thought she was dead. Had thought that maybe Cate had been Amarantha’s first political murder…but Cate had always been smart enough to know when to go underground. When to hide herself away so well that it was impossible to find her, even for him.
Only after the last battle with Hybern had been fought…only then, her information trickle to him. She had been fighting her own, one-woman mission, keeping the human lands as safe as she could.
And she had also told him what exactly would have happened if she had interfered more obviously. If she hadn’t hidden herself away in the shadows, made sure that nobody knew that she was a piece on the chessboard as well.
“She had her reason,” Azriel said quietly.
"Why didn't she?" Rhys shot back, his anger flaring. "She had the power to do it. She has the capability. But instead, she chose to stand by and watch us suffer. She chose to let us endure fifty years of torture and horrors."
Azriel's expression darkened. "There are things you don't know, Rhys," he said quietly. "Things that no one knows, things that she hasn't told anyone."
He knew what he asked her about…but there were some things where Cate just turned silent...just stared emptily in front of her with these green eyes an ocean of pain and suffering…and he left it at that. It was better that way.
There were things that Cate didn't even tell him...that she never would utter to a single soul.
Rhys clenched his jaw, his irritation and frustration mounting even more at Azriel's words. "And what exactly would those 'things' be that she hasn't told anyone?" he asked, his voice dripping with sarcasm.
He could feel the adamantium ripped claws against the shield of his mind, could feel the deep gouges Rhys left and he held his own, clenching his teeth.
Rhys let out a growl of frustration, Azriel's mental shields holding firm against the onslaught of Rhys.
"Damnit, Azriel," he bit out. "I'm trying to protect you, can't you see that?"
"All I am seeing is that you keep trying to control me," Azriel bit out.
"Control you?" Rhys repeated incredulously. "You think that's what this is about? You think I'm just controlling you because I feel like it?"
Azriel shot him a dark glance. "What else do you call trying to dictate who I do and don't spend my time with, hm?"
First Elain, now Cate. Azriel was done.
What he did with Cat had no political ramifications for Rhys whatsoever…unless one counted easier access to certain kinds of information.
"I'm trying to look out for you, you stubborn, infuriating, idiot," Rhys gritted out. "I'm trying to keep you safe, to keep you from getting hurt. From getting burned."
Azriel let out a scoff, his irritation mounting. "And do you really think I'm so weak and helpless that I need you to 'keep' me safe?" he shot back. "| can take care of myself, Rhys. I don't need you hovering over me like a mother hen."
"You are the spymaster of this court! And you are colluding with her!"
"Colluding?" Azriel repeated, his tone flat. "We're not planning a coup if that's what you're implying. Actually, if you truly think that I would do something like that...then I think I have no place in this court anymore."
Rhys froze at Azriel's words, his irritation replaced by surprise and a hint of guilt. "Don't say that," he said, his voice quieter now. "That's not what I meant, and you know it."
"Do I?" Azriel asked him flatly.
If Rhys truly thought that he and Cate were planning to topple his throat, then Azriel should not be trusted at all.
Rhys let out a huff, running a hand through his hair.
"Damnit, Azriel," he muttered. "You know me better than that. You know that I would never doubt your loyalty."
"Az..." Cassian piped up.
Azriel's gaze turned to Cassian, who had been watching the exchange silently from the sidelines. "What?" he bit out. "Want to call Cate a whore? Again? Or would you like to go back to implying that she is using me? Again? Do you truly take me for stupid enough that I wouldn't have noticed?"
Cassian tensed at Azriel's sharp words, his own irritation mounting at being called out so directly. "I'm not calling her a whore," he muttered defensively. "I just think you're being reckless, that's all."
"The one thing Cate did was to help Nesta," Azriel said, his voice even. "I know you didn't like it, but it clearly worked. Nesta made that choice, Cassian. And Nesta had every right to make this fucking choice too."
Cassian clenched his jaw, stung by Azriel's words. "I get that," he bit out. "And thanks to her, I now got a mate that's so fucking furious with me that she doesn't even talk to me anymore."
"I hate to be the one to tell you, but that Nesta is angry at you, has nothing to do with Cate," Azriel snapped. "She's angry because you think you have a right to decide what she does with her own body. We have some people who think they can decide what happens to a female's body in this court. Do you truly wish to put yourself on the same level as them?" Azriel said lowly.
Cassian froze, his expression darkening at the implications of Azriel's words. "I'm not like that," he said tightly, his own anger mounting. "You know damn well I'm not like that."
"Prove it," Azriel bit out. "Cate only cast a Dreamcatcher Spell. She has cast the same on me, numerous times. The only thing it does is to blunt the emotional impact of the nightmares. Nothing else. She did that as a favour to me, Cassian."
Cassian scowled. "So she's your personal magic spell caster now?" he asked, his voice cold. "She's just there to help you get a good night's sleep?"
Azriel's nostrils flared at Cassian's barbed words. "She's my friend, not just some 'spell caster'," he said, his voice tight with anger. "And maybe if you actually bothered to talk to her yourself instead of just listening to rumours, you would see that too."
Cassian shot him a dark glance, his expression closed off.
"I'm not interested in getting to know her," he said coldly.
Azriel let out a scoff, his own anger mounting even more. "Of course, you aren't," he said, his voice dripping with sarcasm. "It's easier to judge someone without knowing them, isn't it?"
Rhys stepped in, his voice cutting through the tension in the air. "Alright, that's enough," he said firmly. "This arguing is getting us nowhere. We need to figure out a way forward, not keep sniping at each other like children."
Azriel clenched his jaw, his own irritation still simmering beneath the surface.
Cassian grumbled to himself but finally nodded. "Fine," he muttered. "What do you suggest, then?"
Rhys let out a sigh, running a hand through his hair. "Well, for starters, Azriel, maybe you could stop spending so much time with her," he suggested.
Azriel couldn't help but bark out a laugh. "No," he said drily. "I really don't care if you like it or not, Rhys, but Cate's presence in my life is not something that we are going to argue about. Either you accept it or you don't. If you don't, you'll get to find yourself a new spymaster."
Rhys froze at Azriel's words, his eyes widening in surprise.
"Are you...are you actually threatening to quit over this?" he asked, a hint of incredulity in his voice.
"It's not a threat," Azriel said quietly. "I am telling you that my relationship with Cate is not up for debate. I am telling you that her presence in my life is non-negotiable. She's important to me, Rhysand."
Maybe the most important of them all.
She understood him. Nobody else understood him. She wasn’t scared of him. Everybody was always scared of him. She didn’t once flinch away from the things he had done, because she had done the same or worse. It was so…easy to be with her.
He didn’t need to pull on a mask and behave like a normal person, because she wasn’t normal either. She would never judge him for some of the horrific dark thoughts that ran around in his head. She had the same.
Rhys clenched his jaw, trying to rein in his anger. "You'd really throw away centuries of loyalty and friendship for her?" Rhys asked tightly.
"If you don't trust me anymore to do my job, then there is nothing to throw away," Azriel said quietly. "You already stopped treating me like your brother by Winter Solstice, Rhysand. I did what you asked. I kept away from Elain. I only tried to help Nesta, but you don't like my methods, so clearly I must be out to destroy my brother's mating bond. Gods, do you even hear yourself?! Cate has done nothing to you, or to Nesta or to Elain. She offered her help, even when she was treated utterly reprehensible by you,” he spat out.
Rhys bristled at the accusation, his irritation mounting. "I never said I didn't trust you, Azriel," he gritted out. "I just don't trust her"
Azriel let out a scoff, his own annoyance sharpening.
"Why?" he asked, his voice sharp as a knife. "Why is it that you're so desperate to find fault in her that you're questioning my judgement and my own ability to be discerning?"
Rhys clenched his jaw, his irritation warring with a hint of guilt. "I just... just think you're not seeing her clearly," he said, his voice tight. "She's clouding your mind, making you see her in a more... favourable light."
Azriel rolled his eyes, his irritation mounting again. "I'm not some damn swooning schoolboy, Rhys," he said firmly. "I'm not some naive idiot that falls for every pretty face. And you should know me better than to assume that I would let her manipulate me in such a way."
Without a word, he lifted the shirt he wore, lifting the glamour that kept the bargain mark from sight.
Rhys's eyes widened at the sight of the mark on Azriel's shoulder. "You...you made a bargain with her?" he said, disbelief and concern colouring his voice. It was a circle with a star that…not any bigger than a gold coin.
"The very first time I met her," Azriel bit out. "To tell each other the truth, regardless of anything else."
Centuries ago...the first time he came across his witch...he had been a spy working for Rhys' father. He had been ready to snatch the mantle of spymaster for himself...until Cate had been quicker.
His competition had turned into dust...and he met Hecate The Undying.
They had a bargain. Even still to this day. To tell each other the truth.
Hers wrapped over her shoulder blade...his around his ribs.
Rhys's brow furrowed in confusion and consternation.
"Why?" he asked, his voice tight. "Why would you make such a bargain, with a stranger no less?"
Azriel gritted his teeth, his irritation mounting. He had never enjoyed talking about this particular subject. "She saved my life," he said quietly. "And it was the only way to make sure that we could trust each other."
Cassian's eyes widened in surprise. "What do you mean, she saved your life?" he asked, his voice betraying his own shock.
Azriel clenched his jaw, his irritation still there, but now a hint of vulnerability as well. "There was a...an incident, long ago," he said quietly. "Before I became spymaster...there was...more than one option for the next holder of that title. Some decided to team up. Take me out of the running. And she...she saved me from certain death. She offered me the bargain as a way to...repay the debt."
Rhys gaped at Azriel's words, shock and surprise registering on his face. Cassian was similarly taken aback, clearly having not expected this revelation. "You never told us," Rhys finally managed to say
Azriel let out a scoff, a hint of bitterness entering his voice. "Would you have believed me, if I did?" he asked, his gaze fixed on Rhys's face.
Rhys had the decency to look guilty at that, his jaw clenching as he tried to find an answer. But before he could say anything, Cassian spoke up. "Azriel, you know we would have listened to you, right?" he asked, his voice tight with suppressed emotion.
Azriel let out a huff, his irritation and defensiveness faltering momentarily in the face of Cassian's genuine concern. "..." he started, but then trailed off, shaking his head. "It doesn't matter," he said quietly, his voice guarded.
"It does matter," Cassian urged, taking a step forward. "You're my brother, Azriel. We have fought together, bled together. We have shared everything. Why would you think we wouldn't believe you about something this important?"
"Because you don't believe me right now," Azriel spat out.
Cassian reeled back, stung by Azriel's response. "That's not...that's not true," he protested, even as the guilt settled in the pit of his stomach.
Azriel let out a scoff. "Is it? You don't believe me when I say that she's trustworthy. You think she's manipulating me, that she's somehow got me under her spell. We've met 500 years ago. If she had me under her spell it would not be a new thing," he said flippantly. "She came to Velaris on my request. Because I knew that we could use all the help we could get with Koschei and with Elain."
Cassian's eyebrows shot up at Azriel's admission. "Wait, she's here because...you asked her to come?" he asked, surprise and a hint of disbelief colouring his voice.
Azriel let out a scoff, his irritation flaring again. "Yes, Cassian, she's here because I asked her to come," he bit out. "Can you believe that? Incredible that this selfish monster comes just because I say please, right?! That she is willing to help, even when she gets nothing out of it."
There was a hint of bitter sarcasm in his voice that sent a pang through Rhys' chest. "Azriel, that's not..." he started, but trailed off, unsure what to say.
"I don't want to hear it," Azriel said sharply. "Keep out of my private life. Both of you. You can trust me to act in the best interest of this court. But you will not get me to give up Cate. I'll be by her side until she decides she doesn't want me to be."
Rhys and Cassian both froze at Azriel's firm declaration, both taken aback by the fierce protectiveness in his voice.
There was a tense silence in which neither one of them dared to speak.
"General, High Lord," Azriel drawled before he turned on.his heel and walked out.
For a moment, neither one of them spoke. They just stood there, quietly watching as Azriel stormed off, the door clicking shut behind him.
Finally, Rhys let out a heavy sigh. "Well, that could have gone better."
Azriel though... Azriel went home.
Azriel stalked through the streets, his expression thunderous. He was furious with Rhys and Cassian for questioning his judgement, and for not trusting him. But he was also feeling a growing sense of agitation and anxiety over the whole situation.
As he finally approached his house, he paused momentarily, taking a deep breath to try and quell the mix of emotions swirling within him.
Not to a place. No place had ever been home for him. But to a person. A person that he knew he could trust with his life.
They had never put a label on what exactly their relationship was.
Had never bothered with it. They had always just been...them. They came together and then they went apart again, sometimes for weeks, sometimes decades...but every time they came back together it was like no time had passed at all.
But he knew what it was. Knew what it was to meet his other half...his perfect, match, his equal. And he didn't care what anybody else thought about it any longer. He was done trying to hide, done trying to behave in a way that was more socially acceptable. He wanted his witch.
He wanted Cate.
He wanted her warm laughter, her sharp wit. He wanted her soft body to bury his face as he breathed her in. He wanted those big, green eyes of hers to look at him with affection, not suspicion.
He wanted her in a way he had never wanted anything or anyone before in his existence. And he would be damned if he let anyone come between them.
He finally arrived at Cate's townhouse, his heart thudding in his chest. He didn't hesitate for a moment, not even bothering to knock as he pushed down the handle to the door and stepped into the house.
Azriel gave the jaguar a nod in greeting, his expression softening slightly as he glanced down at the jaguar. "Hey, you," he said quietly. "Where's Cate?"
Belladonna was her familiar, bound to her through an ancient magical ritual. She served as a companion, as a focus for Cate’s magic, as protector…She was a part of Cate just like his shadows were for him.
He didn’t need an actual thought until his shadows went to swarm to her, always having liked the big cat that playfully swiped at them, claws carefully withdrawn, before she looked at Azriel and then in the direction of the bedroom.
Azriel let out a soft breath as he saw the direction of the jaguar's glance. He took that as a cue to head to the bedroom, his heart beating faster with every step he took.
Azriel let out a soft breath as he saw her spread out on the bed, asleep. He moved forward quietly, his gaze trailing over her face, over her unruly red hair, her freckled arms and slender legs. She was so beautiful, so vulnerable without her usual sharp edge.
He could see the signs of exhaustion on her face, the dark circles under her eyes, the slight frown on her forehead. She was tired, no doubt from the day's events. He felt a pang in his chest, an overwhelming urge to protect her, to take care of her in that moment.
The High Lord went to see her this morning, his shadows whispered. Her magic forced him out of the house.
Azriel grunted, his eyes narrowing as the shadows informed him of Rhys' visit to Cate's house. That meddling bastard, he grumbled, a hint of irritation in his voice. He should've left her alone.
It must have gotten bad if Cate had forced Rhys out of her house.
He didn't hesitate as he undressed. Regardless of Cassian's worry for his manhood, Azriel had never worried about that once.
As he got into the bed behind her, he pulled her close to him, savouring the feeling of her body against his. Azriel tucked his head into the crook of her neck, breathing in the scent of her hair. He wrapped his arm around her, holding her tightly against him like a lifeline.
For a moment, he just lay there, holding her close, taking comfort in the sound of her slow, steady breathing. But then he couldn't help it, his hand began to wander. It started at her waist, tracing lightly over the curves of her body.
He moved up, his fingers tracing over the delicate skin of her hip, her ribs, the valley between her breasts. He heard her breath hitch as he touched her, her body stirring in response to his touch. He felt her press back against him, her body seeking out the comfort of his touch. He pressed his lips to the nape of her neck, his mouth moving lightly over the sensitive skin.
Cate let out a soft sigh, her body responding to him, arching slightly in his arms. He couldn't resist, his hand wandering lower, tracing the line of her hipbone, the softness of her stomach. He felt her shiver as he touched her, her fingers twitching in the sheets.
He didn't stop, his hand continuing its journey down, down to the apex of her thighs. He pressed his fingers gently against her flesh, feeling the heat…the wetness that already coated his fingers. Between one breath and the next, her eyes opened slowly, a soft gasp escaping her lips. She turned her head slightly, her gaze lazily meeting his. "Azriel," she breathed, her voice ragged with sleep and desire.
Azriel moved quickly, his lips capturing hers in a searing kiss. He poured all his desperation, his need for her, into the kiss, his hand still tracing over the soft skin of her thighs.
If Cate was caught off guard by his forwardness, but she quickly recovered and pressed herself against him, responding to his kiss with a soft mewl.
Her tongue met his, dancing against it, and he could taste the familiar hint of apples and spice in her mouth. It sent a shiver down his spine, sparking a blaze of desire within him.
Her. Nothing, nobody had ever been able to compare.
Azriel ran one of his hands down her side, her curves a familiar and comforting sensation. He deepened the kiss, claiming more, pushing her harder into the wall, pressing his body against hers.
The desire, the fierce need to touch, taste, and feel all of her, was mounting rapidly, taking over his senses.
He broke the kiss momentarily, panting as he took her in.
Cate's hair was even more tousled, her lips red and wet. Her eyes had darkened to an almost black hue, the want in them so clear that it made his very blood sing.
He leaned back in, his lips trailing down her neck, nipping and sucking at the soft skin. He could feel her body responding to his touch, the way she pressed herself into him, arching into him in silent invitation.
Her scent, her taste, the feel of her...the noises she made...all of it drove him crazy, made him want more, more...more of her. Azriel pressed himself against her, his body desperate for connection, for the feel of her skin against his.
He couldn't get enough of her, couldn't stop himself from touching her, from tasting her, from making her moan and writhe under his touch.
Azriel moved down, his lips and tongue trailing over her collarbone, her throat, and the top of her chest.
Azriel was drowning in her, his senses overrun by everything that was this glorious, maddening female. He could feel his hands shaking with the need to touch her, to hold her and never let go.
He needed her, needed to make her his, to claim her completely. His hands roamed over her body, caressing, teasing, marking her skin with his touch, marking her as his and only his.
A bite here, a kiss there, adding to the patchwork of bruises and hickeys he had already left. Cate was his.
His fingers traced over her skin, trailing over the marks he had left behind. It was satisfying in a primal way, to see the evidence of his possession of her body. His. She was his.
"Say it," he whispered hoarsely, his voice a rough, needy growl. "Say you're mine."
His hands continued their assault, his fingers trailing over her hips, her stomach, up to her thighs.
He wanted, no, needed to hear the words from her lips, needed her to confirm what he already knew in his heart to be true. And judging by the way she arched into his touch, the way her eyes darkened further at his demand, she wanted it just as badly as he did.
"Cate," he said again, his voice even rougher than before. "Say it. Say you're mine."
He punctuated his demand with a bite to her shoulder, sharp and possessive.
His hands roamed over her body again, more insistent, more desperate. He knew he was being greedy, that he was pushing the boundaries, but he didn't care. He needed her to say those words. He needed her to claim him as much as he was claiming her.
Her breath hitched, her body arching again. He could feel the heat emanating from her, the desire burning in her veins just as strongly as it burned in his.
"I'm...I'm yours," Cate gasped out, her voice ragged with need.
He rewarded her with his cock thrusting inside her, a cry coming from her, just as he bit down again.
She hadn’t truly been ready for him, but neither of them had ever shied away from a bite of pain. Besides, he trusted her to use her safeword if she needed it. And she would. They may played rough, but they had done this often enough to know each other’s boundaries very well.
And like this, her body quivering around him, her cunt struggling to stretch around him, her body tightly pressed against him…for once she was utterly at his mercy.
His body thrummed with a primal satisfaction, as he began to move, his body rocking against hers. His grip on her hips was bruising, the need to lose himself in her overwhelming. His lips found her neck again, kissing and sucking the sensitive skin, drawing out soft gasps from her. The sound of their breathing and the soft wet slapping of skin mingled with the occasional thump against the wall, the only sound in the otherwise silent room. He lost himself in the feeling of her, the way she moved and writhed against him. The desire, the passion, the desperate need to be closer, more was almost a living thing, driving him to move faster, harder, claiming her and being claimed.
He was consumed by her, by the sensations coursing through his body, by the sheer need to be as close to her as physically possible.
Azriel could feel himself approaching the edge
Her body was shuddering, clenching around him, the soft gasps and mewls becoming whimpers as she too felt the tension building. He could feel her nails biting into his skin, the sting of it feeding him, pushing him further on.
His movements became faster, more frantic. He was close, so close, but he wanted her to go over the edge with him. He nipped at her neck, the sound of her gasps and moans spurring him on. His grip tightened on her hips, his fingers digging into her flesh, desperate to hold on.
"Mine," he repeated, more to himself than to her. "Mine," he said again, the word a low growl.
He repeated the word again and again, like a mantra, a desperate claim. As he felt her body shuddering against his, the sounds of her climax mingling with his own, he said it again, for good measure, his mouth against the shell of her ear. "Mine," he said again, his voice ragged and raw. "You're mine."
And as Azriel let his body surrender to the climax, the sensation overwhelming and all-consuming, he repeated it once more, his eyes closed, his forehead resting against hers.
"You're mine."
As they both came down, he didn't let go of her. He kept her close, his arms wrapped around her like a lifeline.
"I love you," he murmured in her ear, his voice hoarse but firm. He had never said the words aloud, but now it felt like a dam had burst, a truth that had been there all along finally spilling out into the open.
"I love you," he repeated, his eyes still shut, his face nuzzling against her neck. He could feel her heartbeat against his chest, the rapid thump slowly returning to a more normal pace.
He wasn't even sure why he'd kept the words from her for so long. Fear, maybe, of scaring her off. Or maybe because he was just so used to keeping his emotions tightly leashed.
Maybe because he knew that she thought that every other person would just keep leaving her.
He knew her well enough to be aware of her trust issues. He knew that she had walls built up, as high as the damn sky. He knew that she was terrified of putting her heart on the line and getting it broken.
It was buried deep, hidden behind her prickly exterior, her sharp tongue, and her fiercely independent spirit. But once you broke through all of that, once you earned her trust and got through those walls of hers, her love was fierce, unwavering, and loyal to a fault.
He took her face in his hands, tilting it up so he could look at her. "Say it," he demanded again, the need to hear her say the words overwhelming. "Please," he added softly, the desperate plea in his voice clear.
He searched her face, his eyes locking with hers, pleading and desperate. He needed to hear those three little words from her more than he needed air to breathe. He cupped her face in his hands, tilting her head up so he could look directly into her eyes.
Her eyes met his, the green depths holding a mixture of love, amusement, and tenderness. She let out a soft huff, gently cupping his face in her hands. "Of course, I love you, you sap," she said, her voice warm and affectionate.
The words washed over him like a balm, soothing and healing, chasing away the doubts that had lingered in his mind. He let out a shaky breath, his eyes still locked with hers. "You love me?" he asked, his voice a hoarse whisper as if he still couldn't quite believe it.
He felt a rush of emotion, a combination of joy, relief, and disbelief. He pulled her closer, burying his head in the crook of her neck once again. "Again," he whispered. "Say it again.
Her laughter vibrated through her body, the sound like music to his ears. "I love you," she repeated, the words firm and steady. "I love you, you insufferable, overprotective bat."
He chuckled, the sound muffled against her skin. Her words felt like a balm to his soul, soothing away the last remnants of uncertainty.
"Insufferably overprotective, huh?" he asked, his lips curving into a soft smile against her neck.
She huffed again, the sound amused and affectionate. "You're a 500-year-old warrior with severe control issues," she pointed out. "What else am I supposed to call you?"
He hummed, the sound an imitation of agreement. "Severe control issues," he repeated, lifting his head to look at her again. He brushed a loose strand of hair off her face, tucking it behind her ear. "Is that really how you see me?"
"Yes," she replied without missing a beat. "You are insufferable. You are possessive and territorial, and sometimes I just want to strangle you." A note of laughter crept into her voice.
"Strangle me, huh?" he retorted, lifting his head slightly.
She laughed again, her hands coming up to thread through his hair. "You're lucky I love you," she teased.
"I think I'm the luckiest male alive," he replied, leaning in to press a kiss to her neck.
"Some people will vehemently disagree with you there," Cate said, her voice quiet.
He chuckled his lips still against her skin. "Let them," he murmured. "I'm not here to please everyone, only you."
She hummed, her nails scratching lightly at his scalp. "You're too sappy for your own good," she scolded softly. "I never want to come between you and your family," Cate said quietly.
He lifted his head, his expression turning serious. "You never will," he said firmly, his voice carrying an undercurrent of steel. "You're mine, and I won't let anyone or anything get between us."
She rolled her eyes, but he cupped her cheek. "I am serious. They are not going to like this," she warned him. "They didn't even like it when we were just...having fun."
He stroked her cheek gently with his thumb. "That's their problem," he said, his voice firm. "I don't care what they think. I care about you. And I will fight tooth and nail for us if I have to."
"You're incredible," she murmured, her eyes soft. "And I swear to the Mother, if you get yourself killed out of some misplaced sense of protectiveness, I will resurrect you and kill you myself."
He couldn't help but laugh at that.
He chuckled. "That's fair," he conceded, his thumb still tracing gentle circles on her cheek. "But I don't care what anybody thinks. Let them have their opinions. I don't care what they think. All that matters is that I have you."
She let out a shaky laugh, relief and affection warring in her eyes. "You're insane," she told him, though her voice was filled with affection. "You know that, right?"
"Only when it comes to you," he assured her, his hand moving to cup her chin. "You drive me mad, in the best possible way."

The Witching Hour - Chapter 2 - Cassian
Summary:
5 Times members of the Inner Circle get absolutely terrified by Azriel's...whatever she is, and 1 (of many) times Azriel thinks that his witch was the best thing that ever happened to him.
Warnings:

Nesta's nightmares subsided.
Cassian wasn't sure why...wasn't sure what had been the cause, because it was like they disappeared utterly and completely in the blink of an eye.
Cassian, who had seen the toll that the nightmares had taken on Nesta, was both relieved and confused.
The nightmares, which had tormented her for so long, had vanished. And that puzzled him. He couldn't help but wonder what could have caused such a sudden and complete cessation.
He thought back to the days before the nightmares had stopped, trying to recall any changes or events that might have caused such an abrupt change…he came up empty. The days before had been fairly routine, nothing out of the ordinary, nothing that could have…
And then suddenly...they were gone. He was glad about it of course.
And as he drew the tips of his fingers down his mate's bare back...he was glad for her.
He traced the line of her spine, feeling the smoothness of her skin under his fingertips. Her back was bare, her hair spilling over her shoulders in a tangled mess from where he'd buried his hands into it earlier.
She was relaxed, her body loose and pliant, and the stress and tension that was usually present in her slowly bled away with each gentle caress.
"The nightmares...have lessened, haven't they?" He asked lightly.
She hummed in assent, her eyes closed as she relished the feeling of his hands on her body.
"Mmm," she murmured sleepily. "They have. I haven't had one in a few weeks now."
He continued to trace his fingers along her spine, feeling the subtle shift of her muscles as she breathed.
"That's good, sweetheart," he whispered pressing a kiss against her neck.
She let out a soft sigh of contentment as he kissed her neck, arching into his touch slightly."It is," she agreed quietly, her voice a sleepy murmur. "I feel...rested. More so than I have in months. I just hope the spell keeps working."
He froze his lips against the elegant column of her neck.
The spell? What spell?!
Cassian pulled back slightly, his hand still resting on her back, his mind churning.
Spell...did she say spell?
He couldn't remember Nesta mentioning a spell. Or anyone, for that matter. And yet...
"What spell?" he asked, his voice rough as he tried to control the hint of alarm that crept into it.
"The spell that's helping me with the nightmares," Nesta mumbled, her voice still sleepy and content. He stared at her, his heart clenching as the words sank in.
She had a spell? But…how? When? And why hadn't she told him?
"Nesta," he said, his voice tense as he tried to keep his concern in check. She hummed in response, her eyes still closed. He took a deep breath, steadying himself.
"When…did you cast a spell to help with the nightmares?" Cassian asked, forcing his voice to remain level.
"Oh," she mumbled, her eyelids fluttering open slightly as she processed his question.
"A few weeks ago," she said, her voice gaining a bit more clarity.
He felt a sinking feeling in his stomach as she spoke. A few weeks ago? Why hadn't she told him? Or any of the others for that matter?
"A few weeks..." he repeated slowly, his mind whirling.
"Yes," she said, her eyes now fully open, though her voice still held a hint of sleepy tiredness.
He swallowed, trying to keep his worry in check.
"And...who cast it?" he asked, trying to keep his voice casual.
"Azriel found me after a nightmare," Nesta said quietly. Azriel couldn't have cast a spell like that, that made no sense.
Cassian felt a new wave of confusion mixed with worry. If it hadn't been Azriel, then who had helped Nesta? And how did it have anything to do with the spells?
He took a deep breath, trying to keep his alarm in check as he continued to speak.
"Who," he began, his voice measured, "cast the spell then?"
Nesta's expression softened slightly, a hint of apology in her eyes as she looked at him.
"Azriel..Azriel brought me to see a friend of his. She's a witch"
There was only one witch Azriel was friendly with.
"Nesta, please tell me you didn't let Hecate cast a spell at you," he pleaded with his mate. He saw the way her shoulders tensed slightly at his words, her eyes shifting away from his gaze.
"Azriel said she could help," she said, a hint of defensiveness in her voice. "And it worked. I haven't had a nightmare since I went to see her. And Azriel calls her Cate," she added.
He felt a wave of disbelief crashing over him. Cate.
Azriel had taken his mate to see Cate.
The mere thought of it sent a chill down his spine.
"I am going to kill Az," he growled. He hadn't even known that Cate was still around. The last time he had heard about her had been a century ago.
But clearly, she had survived the war against Hybern with nary a scratch. Somehow it didn’t surprise him at all. Cate seemed to thrive where chaos was concerned.
Nesta rolled her eyes at his comment. "You most certainly are not," she said with a huff.
Cassian stared at her, torn between fear and irritation.
"And why not?!" he exclaimed, his hands tightening on her hips. "He let you go see Cate. Cauldron knows what kind of spell she laid on you."
"It was just to help with the nightmares," Nesta protested, shifting in his grip.
He held her tighter, not ready to let her go just yet. "And you just believed that? Azriel told you it was just for the nightmares, and you took his word?" Cassian questioned,  the tension in his body ratcheting higher.
"I trust Azriel," she snapped. "It's a dreamcatcher spell. Something Care has cast on Azriel multiple times. You think Azriel would have let anything happen to me?!"
"It's Cate!" he retorted, his grip on her tightening even more.
How could she not see how dangerous this was? How could she trust Azriel's word so completely?
"Azriel's judgment when it comes to her is...compromised," he ground out, his voice tight with worry and irritation.
"Compromised?" she repeated, her eyebrows shooting up.
He scowled at her, his fear and frustration mounting.
"Yes, compromised," he snapped. "They have...history, and Azriel has...certain blind spots when it comes to her."
"They're friends," she said firmly, her eyes flashing with a familiar stubborn gleam.
He gritted his teeth in frustration. She was completely missing the point.
"That's putting it mildly," he retorted. "They're...they're... together, in a sense. Azriel would let her do damn near anything to him."
She rolled her eyes at his words. She didn't believe him. Didn't believe that Cate was a threat.
He let out a frustrated huff, pulling her closer to him, trying to get her to understand.
"Nesta," he said urgently, holding her gaze. "Cate is...she's dangerous. She has a reputation, and has for centuries. The spells she casts, the favours she asks for..."
"The only favour she asked for was from Azriel," Nesta snapped. "She did nothing but help me. And flirt outrageously with Az. Is this about her stabbing you? Are you holding a grudge?" She asked with a roll of her eyes.
He winced at her question. The memory of being stabbed by Cate was still a sore spot for him.
"Yes, it may have something to do with her stabbing me!" he exclaimed. "She is a dangerous witch, Nesta. She should not be trifled with. You went to her, let her cast a spell on you, and now you're….you're fine with it?"
"I am fine with it," she said firmly, her chin lifting in defiance.
His frustration grew even more at her stubborn stance. She didn't seem to be grasping the gravity of the situation.
"You're fine with it now," Cassian hissed through gritted teeth. "What about later? What if that spell has lingering effects, or if Cate decides she wants something from you in return? Did that ever cross your mind?"
"If it does, I'll deal with it," she said with a dismissive wave of her hand
He wanted to shake Nesta, to make her understand.
"You will deal with it?" he repeated, his voice rising in anger. "How exactly will you deal with it, Nesta? What if the spell backfires, or she wants something that you can't give? She is a powerful witch. You shouldn't have even gone near her in the first place!"
Nesta opened her mouth to argue, but he cut her off, his voice low and intense.
"No, don't even try to defend it," he said, his eyes blazing with anger. "You let Azriel take you to see Cate. You let her cast a spell on you. And you didn't even tell any of us about it until now."
He paused, taking in a deep, frustrated breath.
"Do you have any idea how worried I've been? How worried we all have been about your nightmares?"
"I was fine!" she protested, her eyes flashing with annoyance.
He gritted his teeth, his hold on her hips tightening.
"No, you weren't fine," he snapped back. "You were having nightmares that were tormenting you. I heard you in your sleep. I saw how tired and drained you were during the day. You were not fine."
Her expression softened slightly at his words, some of the defiance leaving her eyes. "I'm fine now," she said weakly, her voice losing some of its conviction.
He let out a scoff, his grip on her still firm.
"Now that you've let Cate cast a spell on you, you're fine," he said, his voice dripping with sarcasm. "That doesn't mean it will always be that way. Spells can have consequences. Side effects. Did you even ask her about that?"
"Nesta," he said, his voice softer but still tinged with irritation. "You should have told us. You should have told me. We could have figured something out together. We could have found a solution that didn't involve going to that witch."
"She said the only consequence would be a headache."
Cassian clenched his jaw at her words. A headache. That's it.
"A headache," he repeated, his voice flat. "And you believed her?!"
"Why wouldn't I?" she snapped, her eyes glittering in annoyance. "She helped me. She cast a spell and now I'm not having nightmares anymore. Why would she lie about it?"
He let out a frustrated huff, shaking his head.
"Because that's what Cate does," he said, his voice taut. That’s what she had always done. Cate manipulated everybody around her to her liking. "She lies. She manipulates. She twists favours and spells to her liking. You can't trust her, Nesta."
"Well, I did, and it worked," she retorted.
His anger flared at her words. How could she be so blind to the danger she had put herself in?
"It worked, for now," he shot back. "What about later? What if she decides she wants something from you? What if the spell has consequences down the line?"
"I'll deal with it," Nesta repeated.
He felt his patience reach its breaking point.
"You keep saying that!" he exclaimed, his voice rising. "You'll deal with it. You'll figure it out. But you can't. Not with Cate. She's playing games, and you're playing right into her hands."
"So you think Azriel would risk me like that?" Nesta asked icily. "You think your brother would do that? Maybe you should trust his judgment!"
Her question struck a nerve, and he felt his irritation spike even higher.
"Trust his judgement?!" he exclaimed, his control slipping further. "When it comes to Cate, his judgement is more than a bit impaired."
"He's smart, Cassian," she shot back, her stubbornness showing. "He wouldn't let her do anything to hurt me."
He bit back a scoff, his anger continuing to grow.
"You're underestimating how blind he can be when it comes to her," he said through clenched teeth. "He was practically obsessed with her hundreds of years ago. I wouldn't be surprised if he still is."
He was going to fucking kill Azriel. Probably after he killed Cate.
He forced himself to take a deep breath, as he got out of bed.
He was seething, his anger and fear swirling together into a roiling mass inside him. Azriek...he'd deal with her too.
But first, he needed to find Cate and give her a piece of his mind.
"Cassian, where are you going?" Nesta asked, watching him as he moved off the bed.
"I'm going to find Cate," he said through clenched teeth, his voice hard as steel.
Nesta's eyes widened, surprise flashing in her expression.
"You're...what?" she asked, her voice tinged with alarm.
He stomped from that room. He was going witch hunting.
He was seething with anger as he stormed out of the room, a mixture of worry and fury driving him forward.
Cassian stalked through the house, his steps heavy and purposeful, his mind focused on one thing - finding Cate.
She still had the same apartment she had centuries ago. He stood in front of her apartment, his anger still seething within him.
The wards that surrounded the place felt all too familiar, and just as deadly as they had been centuries ago. But he wouldn't let them stop him, not when he was this riled up.
Cassian slammed his fist against the door, the force of his blow reverberating through the solid wood.
He waited, his patience already at its limit.
After a few moments, he heard footsteps approaching the other side of the door, followed by the sound of several locks being released one after the other.
Finally, with a creak, the door slowly opened to reveal Cate.
There she was, standing in the doorway, looking at him with a mix of surprise and annoyance. Her green eyes sparkled in the dim light of the hallway, and her full lips curled into a smirk.
"Well, well," she drawled, her voice as sharp as a blade. "If it isn't Cassian. I should have known you would show up eventually." His anger flared at her mocking tone, and he had to bite back a string of curses.
"You knew I would come," Cassian said through clenched teeth, his eyes locked on her. "You knew, and you still did it anyway."
She leaned against the doorframe, the smirk still on her face.
"I had a feeling you'd eventually figure it out," Cate said with a shrug. "And here you are. Ready to yell at me, I assume?"
"Yeah, I'm ready to yell at you," he replied curtly, his voice a low growl. "You put a spell on my mate. You let her believe it was just for nightmares, but I know better. You're up to something, and I want answers."
She raised an eyebrow at his words, her expression unimpressed.
"Always so quick to assumptions, Cassian," Cate said coolly. "You always were one to jump to conclusions. You don't know as much as you think you do."
His blood boiled at her careless attitude, and he took a step forward, his muscles tense.
"Is that so? Then why don't you enlighten me?" Cassian said, his voice laced with anger. "Why don't you tell me why I shouldn't strangle you right here, right now?"
Cate chuckled at his words, her smirk widening.
"You're welcome to try, General," she purred, her chin lifting in a challenging manner. "But you and I both know it won't end well for you."
He clenched his fists at his sides, the urge to strangle her almost overwhelming. But he knew she was right. She was a powerful witch, and he was well aware of the fact that he couldn't match her magic. By the time he had drawn his sword, she could have already turned him into a slug.
"You're enjoying this," he gritted out, his jaw tight. "You're loving every moment of this."
"Of course I am," Cate admitted with a shrug. "Your temper has always been a source of great amusement to me. I do love seeing you all riled up, ready to go charging into danger. Such a predictable male."
Her words cut through him like a knife, and he had to take a deep breath to avoid letting his anger get the better of him.
"You're enjoying playing games with people's lives," Cassian shot back, unable to keep the anger out of his voice. "You knew what you were doing when you cast that spell on my mate. And you still did it anyway."
"I did her a favour," she said drily. "Every action has its consequences, General. You should know that better than most. What did you think were the consequences of imprisoning your mate in the House of Wind? Of making her Rhysand's little soldier?"
Her words hit him like a blow, and he felt the air get caught in his throat.
"Don't you dare bring that up," he warned, his voice almost a whisper. "Don't you dare act like you know what happened between me and my mate. You have no idea-"
She interrupted him with a scoff, her smirk growing even wider.
"Oh, I have plenty of ideas," she said, her voice dripping with fake sweetness. "I can see it in your eyes, General.
The guilt, the regret. The knowledge that you made more than a few mistakes.
"Your mate is the one paying the prize for your actions. All I did was help her. I took the weight of the nightmares from her. That's all I did."
"You took the weight of the nightmares from her, but what else did you take in the process?" he shot back, his voice rising in anger. "What other consequences did you leave unmentioned? What other costs is she going to have to pay down the line?"
Cate rolled her eyes at his questions, her smirk still in place.
"Oh, spare me the dramatics, General," Cate drawled. "You act like I made her a sacrifice to the Cauldron or something. It was a simple dreamcatcher spell, nothing more."
His anger flared again at her flippant attitude, and he had to clench his jaw to keep himself from exploding.
"A dreamcatcher spell?" Cassian repeated, his voice dripping with disdain. "Is that all it is? Just a simple little spell, huh?"
"Indeed it is," Cate confirmed with a shrug. "No lasting consequences, I assure you. The nightmares are gone, and your mate should get a peaceful rest for a good while."
His hands itched to strangle her, the casual way she spoke about his mate's mental well-being driving him insane.
"And that's it?" he asked, his voice tight. "There's no price to pay for this 'simple little spell'? No cost?"
"No price you pay at any rate," Cate said, a grin on her face.
His eyes narrowed with suspicion at her words.
"What does that mean?" Cassian growled, taking another step closer to her.
Her smile widened, the gleam in her eyes almost predatory.
"Oh, General, you're so easy to read," she taunted, her voice low. "You always were. You wear your emotions on your sleeve like a damn fool."He bristled at her words, his hands clenching into fists.
"Cut to the point," Cassian grit out. "What do you mean there's no price we have to pay?"
"Exactly that," she repeated.
He let out a frustrated huff, his patience wearing thin.
"Don't play coy with me," Cassian snarled. "What is the catch? There's always a catch with you."
Her smirk turned even more arrogant, her tone still dripping with mockery.
"Is it so hard to believe that I would do something selflessly? Out of the goodness of my heart? You always think I have some ulterior motive. It's quite insulting, really."
He sneered at Cate’s words, his anger making him fearless.
"You? Selfless?" he shot back, his voice heavy with sarcasm. "Yeah, right. You've never done anything that didn't benefit yourself in some way. Never."
She let out a scoff, her eyes narrowing in annoyance.
"You have such a low opinion of me, don't you?" Cate said, her voice cool. "It's almost endearing, how you don't trust me at all. Not that I'm surprised, of course. You've never believed in my good intentions -"
He cut her off with an angry scoff. "Good intentions?" he repeated, his voice rising in volume. Her only intentions seemed to cause Chaos. He had lost count of how many different things she had her grubby little hands throughout the centuries…how often she had decided to twist fate around her little finger.
"You expect me to believe that you had good intentions when you cast a spell on my mate without my permission? That you were being selfless and not scheming something?"
She rolled her eyes again, clearly becoming more irritated.
"You have no idea how much I helped your mate," she said with a huff. "That girl was tired and drained to the bone. She could barely function. I did you both a favour by taking away her nightmares. That's all there is to it, General. Besides, she doesn't need your permission."
He clenched his jaw, his anger turning almost painful.
"You had no right," he bit out, his voice taut with fury. "No right to touch her, to cast a spell on her, without my knowing. She's my mate, not yours. I was supposed to protect her, and you interfered with that."
Cassian wasn't sure what possessed him. It was fundamentally stupid, to attack her in her own apartment, where the wards listened to her. And still, he reached to throttle her.
He lunged for her, propelled by his anger and frustration.
But just as his hands were about to close around her throat, a blast of magic hit him square in the chest, sending him flying back.
Cassian hit the wall with a thud, the air getting knocked out of his lungs. He cursed, pain coursing through him as he slumped down to the ground.
"Do. Not. Put. Your. Hands. On. Me." Cate hissed.
"What exactly is going on here?" Came the icy voice of his brother. Bare chested, barefoot...clearly coming from bed That godforsaken jaguar at his side.
Cate had stabbed him and that stupid jaguar had taken a bite out of him. He had forgotten neither.
Cassian looked up to see Azriel standing in the doorway, the shadowsinger's eyes fixed on him with a hint of irritation.
The jaguar at his side growled low in its throat, its eyes gleaming in the darkness.
"Azriel," he grunted as he pulled himself up, his body still aching from the blast of magic. "What are you doing here?"
"I could ask you the same question," he responded, his voice harsh.
"I'm here to deal with this scheming witch," he bit out, his anger still burning within him as he gestured towards Cate. Azriel glanced at the witch in question, his lips pressing into a thin line.
"That scheming witch has a name," Cate shot back. "You are supposed to sleep, Azriel," she said quietly, but Azriel just shrugged, still glaring at Cassian.
"What exactly is your problem?" Azriel asked him.
"My problem?" Cassian repeated, his voice still charged with anger. "My problem is that this meddling witch decided to mess with my mate without my knowledge."
"I was helping her," Cate cut in, her voice sharp. "More than you have in months."
He turned to glare at her, his anger once more reaching boiling point.
"I don't want your help," he spat. "You had no right to cast that spell on her. No right!"
"I had every right," Cate shot back, her own anger flaring. "That girl was a mess, and you were blind to it! You were ignoring her struggles, letting her suffer in silence. Someone had to step in."
"I was handling it!" he argued, his voice rising. "My mate is my responsibility, not yours. I was the one who was supposed to protect and care for her, not you!"
"And that worked so well, didn't it?" Cate said, her voice like a whip. "She was drowning under the weight of her nightmares, and you were doing nothing to help her. You call that protecting her?"
"Cate helped Nesta as a Favour to me," Azriel said evenly.
He spun to frown at his brother.
"A favour? What kind of favour?" he asked, suspicion in his voice.
Azriel walked closer to them, his footsteps almost silent. He looked exhausted, the muscles in his bare chest still tense. The jaguar followed him, its tail sweeping the ground.
"A favour," Azriel repeated, his tone flat. "I asked her to help Nesta."
"You what?" he asked, shock and anger warring in his gut. "You asked her to help my mate? Without telling me?"
Azriel let out an exasperated huff, his eyes narrowed. "Yes, I asked her. And I didn't tell you because I knew you'd overreact. And lo and behold, here you are, overreacting."
He felt his fury rise at Azriel's nonchalant reply.
"Overreacting?" he spluttered, his voice rising in disbelief. "You're calling this overreacting? You asked this scheming witch to mess with my mate, and you think I'm overreacting?"
"I didn't ask her to 'mess' with your mate," Azriel said impatiently, his own irritation evident in his voice. "I asked her to help, plain and simple. It's not like I didn't have a reason, Cassian. Nesta needed help, and you were clearly not providing it."
Cassian clenched his fists, his anger flaring even higher. "And you thought Cate was the right person to help her? You know how she operates. You know how she is. You trusted her to help my mate?"
Azriel raised an eyebrow. "Yes, I do know how she is. Which is why I trust her."
He let out a bark of incredulous laughter at that response.
"You trust her?" he repeated, his voice dripping with disbelief. "You actually trust her? After everything she's done? After everything she's messed with over the centuries, you trust her?"
And Cate had done a lot. Not many people had her kind reputation...the kind born out of fear and respect... Hecate The Undying. She was a ghost story. And she had meddled in politics over centuries and had changed the history of Prythian more than once.
His eyes flicked to Cate, who was watching the argument with an amused expression on her face. She gave him a sly smile, aware of his inner turmoil.
"You're out of your mind," he told Azriel, his voice tight. "How can you possibly trust her? She's a master of manipulation and deception. She thrives on chaos and disaster."
"Aww," Cate cooed. "It's so cute that you think you know me."
He turned to glare at her, his jaw clenching.
"I know enough," Cassian bit out, his voice harsh. "I know enough to be wary of you. You're dangerous, Cate. You're untrustworthy. You're a scheming, conniving whore -"
"Enough," Azriel bit out.
"And you -" Cassian rounded on Azriel. He spun to face his brother, his anger boiling over.
"You," he snapped. "How could you do this? How could you betray me like this? Asking Cate to help my mate without telling me. Behind my back. You KNEW how I felt about her, and you still went ahead and did it!"
"How much of an idiot can you be, Azriel? I hope to gods, her cunt is worth it," he sneered. "Don't come crying to me when cuts off your manhood for waking up on the wrong side of the bed."
Azriel's expression darkened, his eyes narrowing.
"Watch your mouth, Cassian," he said, his voice low and dangerous. "You don't know anything about my relationship with Cate, so don't presume to make assumptions. And as to my manhood, I'll have you know that she's far too fond of it to take it away from me."
He felt his own anger spike at Azriel's dismissive tone.
"Fond of it, huh?" he retorted, his voice sharp. "Fond enough to keep you in line, clearly. Gods, you're so blind, brother. You think she really cares about you? About anyone? She's using you, can't you see that?"
"She doesn't care about anyone but herself," he continued, his voice growing more impassioned. "And the second she gets bored with you, she'll toss you aside like a toy she no longer has any use for. You're just another gullible male, fooled by her charm and wits."
Bright green sparks of magic hit him, at that moment. Cassian could nearly taste her magic. Cate was cast in an eery glow.
He stumbled back a few steps, the magic from the woman hitting him like a blow. The room seemed to grow darker, all his senses tingling. It was a potent, overwhelming magic - ancient and primal, like thunder and storms.
"Enough, Cate," he heard Azriel say softly, but Cate's eyes were fixed on him, a strange intensity in her gaze.
"Out." One word, laden with power. "And do not come back."
The power in her voice sent a shiver down his spine. Cassian found himself backing away, the anger draining from him and being replaced with a sense of utter fear. It was an unfamiliar feeling, to be so utterly powerless in the face of a woman's anger.
"Cate..." he began, but the look in her eyes silenced him instantly. He turned to face his brother, but Azriel refused to meet his gaze.
Azriel was watching the witch, and the look on his face was...reverent. Awed.
"Go calm down, Cassian. it's only a dreamcatcher spell. Nothing else. I vow on that for my life."

- Chapter 9 Here -
——————————
18+ Only
——————————
You stood in the middle of the coven, your mind going a mile a minute trying to figure out how you were going to get Bob out of this situation you’d caused.
You could try to unbind him using a charm and then make a run for it, but the charm would take at least 5 seconds, and the door was at least 20 feet away. You doubted that none of the 13 witches surrounding you would notice and stop you, but even if somehow you did manage to mumble the charm under your breath and no one noticed the ropes falling from Bobs limbs, you were sure they’d at least block you from your exit.
No, plan 1 was a no go.
You thought about how you could fight each and every one of them individually, about how you’d fight tooth and nail for Bob, but you knew you were no match for your aunts power.
Plan 2 wasn’t really a plan at all.
You considered that your only option may be talking your way out of the situation, pleading with Gillian’s soft side, the side that helped raise you and spent so many Christmas’s by your side. You knew she hated you in this moment, hated you for jeopardising others for your own selfish need. Hated you for going against what she and the others had fought so hard to stave off, but at the end of the day it was still sacrifice, it was still murder.
“Gilly, please. I know you hate me right now, but I’m begging you to take me and let Bob go. I’ve learnt my lesson, I’m sorry, you don’t need us both.” You began to plead with her.
“No, Bree.” Bob whimpered, a look of pain and horror etched across his face. “Don’t you do this to me!”
You bit back a sob and tore your eyes away from Bob, squaring up to Gillian.
“Take me, let him go, I’m begging you. Make it as slow, and painful as you need to, I will suffer for what I have done, please just let Bob go.”
Gillian’s eyes glinted, and you realised there was no love left for you.
Gillian was a shallow, heartless woman for the most part, but the little love she did once have for you was long gone.
You finally understood what you needed to do to save Bob.
“If you let Bob go, and take me, torture me, it’ll hurt both of us. He’ll have to live with that for the rest of his life and that will be so much worse than if we both die.” You plead as you glanced at Bob, and the look of horror on Bobs face was too much to bear, so you turned away.
Gillian pretended to think about it for a moment, pursing her lips as she looked between you and Bob.
“Hmmm… no, I don’t think so darling. Unfortunately the beetle’s already spoken, shhh… listen? It’s ticking, it’s time.” She chuckled.
And she was right, you had to strain to hear it, but it was there, ticking and clicking menacingly under the floorboards of the warehouse.
“No! I’m willingly sacrificing myself, so it can’t hurt him! That’s not how it works!” You screamed, suddenly frustrated as you lunged towards Bob and began to manually untie him.
No one stopped you as they watched you struggle with the tight knots around Bobs hands.
“Bree…” Bob sighed, defeated. You ignored him as you worked frantically to get him out of his binds.
“Bree.” He said more sternly this time. “Bree, stop!”
You looked up into his striking eyes, your hands slowing to a stop.
“Bree, it was your mom all along.”
“What… what do you mean?”
“Your mom, she was the one who called you here, she came to find you to plant it in your head that I ran off, that I was in danger. It wasn’t true, Bree. She came by the cabin while you slept, said not to wake you, that she wanted to check in. Next thing I knew I was waking up in the dark… in here.”
“That means nothing, she would never-“
Suddenly a soft laugh, almost disturbingly calm, came from the back of the group. The witches parted and your mom walked to the centre with a soft grin plastered across her beautiful features. Behind her your older sisters followed.
“I’m sorry darling, I really did try not to get involved in your love life, but… when the stars align, we simply must.” Her grin began to make you shiver, there was something unnatural behind it. Gillian shrunk behind her, and you suddenly realised it was all a front. She was merely a showman.
“What do you mean?” You breathed out as you stood, facing them.
You mother moved forward slowly, stroked your cheek and then spun quickly to admire your two older sisters, Kylie and Antonia.
“Your sisters, they have made me so proud.” She explained, “They’ve both found their true loves, men who make them happy. Men who would do simply anything for them, just like you and your little Bobby here. But the problem is, honey, as you well know, Mr Deathwatch is always ready to pounce.”
You held your breath as you listened and your mother paced. A terrible, cold feeling washed over you.
Your mother continued, “So imagine my surprise when your aunt and I were doing our yearly ritual to find the next star crossed bastard who was lucky enough to be sacrificed for the good of our kind, when the bones fell on your name, and the parchment burst into flames. I was horrified of course, at first. My own daughter, I couldn’t imagine it, and I so hoped Bob would jump to take your place, but when you somehow outsmarted Gilly under the pier that day, it got me thinking, why had the parchment burst into flames in the first place? It was normal.”
You were genuinely lost now, standing confused and in a half protective stance in front of Bob, ready to defend him at any moment.
“So we went home and I channeled our ancestors, tried to get them to help me, and… I was just about to call it a night when our great ancestor Maria decided to speak up. And you know what she said?” Your mom chucked, her eyes suddenly dark. “She said you were the one they prophesied about, and with you, the entire curse could be broken. You hold the power, my darling, you are so much more powerful than you even know.”
You scoffed, you couldn’t believe any of this was unfolding, “Okay, I already told you, I’ll take Bobs place. There you have it, a willing sacrifice, you can let him go now.” You were angry, furious that your own mother would do this to you, for the sake of your sisters’ happiness.
Your mom shook her head slowly, bringing her fingers up to her lips to press down a smile.
“No, darling, you don’t understand, do you? Poor, young thing. We need both of you for this to work, as well as another very important piece of the puzzle, I’m sure you know who’s followed you here, don’t you?” She gestured her hand at the door almost theatrically, and a second later, the green door burst open.
You clasped your hand over your mouth as the silhouette of those oh so familiar curls stood in the doorway, his large frame towering and clueless.
“Bree! You had me worried sick, I-“ Bradley stopped in his tracks as his eyes adjusted and the women surrounding you in the dimly lit room came into view.
“Bradley, no, you need to go! Now!” Your body went ice cold as you screamed for him to go and you realised what was happening.
It was too late, the door slammed shut behind him as he looked around, surprised.
“Bree, you called me here, what’s going on?” Bradley said as he rested his hand on the gun in his holster.
“No! I didn’t, Bradley, please you need to go!”
Bradley crossed the space between you and wrapped a strong arm around your waist, his large hand resting on the small of your back.
“Bree, what’s happening here?” He breathed down at you, concerned by the unusual gathering.
You shook your head and tears sprung to your eyes, you were so close to him you could feel his breath on your face and you could see the confusion in his eyes. “Bradley I’m so sorry…”
A force suddenly yanked you back ten feet so that you were out of reach of one another, and your mother walked up to him and smiled, “Hello Bradley, nice to see you again.”
Bradley’s face twisted into an expression of confusion and horror, and his jaw clenched and ticked as he realised he couldn’t move, your mothers deceptively soft touch freezing him to his spot as his eyes met yours.
“I’m glad you could make it, you really are an incredibly big part of our puzzle. Without you…” she chuckled, “well, we wouldn’t be able to do it.” Her face had now changed, and the woman you had spent your life trusting and loving was no longer your mother, but rather a shallow, hollow version, devoid of the love she once so openly poured out. You wondered now if it was all an act and this was the real her.
“Mom…” you whimpered, “You can’t do this. One person is enough!”
Your mom shook her head with a smirk, “Not this time. You’re the only witch in the history of our bloodline to have two true soulmates. Sure, some had multiple lovers, but never true, untainted love completely equally for two people. If you all die, none of us will ever be cursed again.”
Your lip began to tremble, you had tried so hard to suppress your feelings for Bradley, you kept telling yourself it was a crush and Bob was the one, but in all honesty your heart was crushed by the immense weight of your feelings for both men.
Now all you felt was the awful weight of guilt, having brought them both into this nightmare.
“Bree… I don’t understand.” Bradley forced out through a clenched jaw. “Do… you love me?”
You wanted to cry, to shake him and ask “that’s the part you’re focusing on??” But all you could do was nod as you looked into his beautiful brown eyes, which sparkled at your affirmation.

“I love you too.” He breathed, still struggling in place to get to you.
Bob flinched behind you, and you suddenly were overwhelmed by the guilt of it all.
Your eyes darted between the two men as your mind raced and you tried to figure out how to get out of this mess.
The problem was, you were surrounded completely, and it now wasn’t just one person you needed to protect, but two.
You realised now that your mothers love for your sisters was stronger than her love for you, and that you needed to do whatever it to took to save the men you loved, even if that meant hurting your family.
“If you lay a finger on either of them, I swear to god you will regret it.” You gritted out, anger bubbling up to the surface. Heat pooling at the tips of your fingers.
Gillian rounded into view with a smirk on her face, cocky as ever as he stood beside your mother, “Poor thing, you never stood a chance really. I mean don’t get me wrong, we do love you dear, but this is for the greater good of our kind.”
Your mother nodded, “Wouldn’t you want nothing more than to protect your family, Bree?”
You scoffed, “What, the family that would rather I die than their husbands? Why would I sacrifice my life and the men I love for that? If you let them go, I promise you I won’t resist.” You pleaded again, hoping their love for you would help them see clearly.
You mother looked at the ground and sighed, and you hoped for a moment that your pleading had worked.
“Mom?” You said softly, appealing to her motherly instinct.
Your mother looked up at you slowly, a soft smile and gentle eyes, the way she always looked at you when you were a child.
You held your breath as the seconds passed, the heat in your fingers slowly ebbing away as you felt that you may have gotten through to her.
Then, seemingly with the flick of a switch, her face turned stone cold. “No.”
Your mother flicked her wrist, and suddenly Bradley went limp and the light seemingly disappeared from his eyes.
You screamed, you screamed so loud you couldn’t even hear it anymore, and the heat in your fingers turned into white hot power that engulfed the room and everyone in it. It all happened so quickly, and you weren’t even sure if Bradley’s knees hit the ground before the dark room was fully illuminated.
You screamed as you dropped to your knees and shook, blinded by the bright light you emitted and filled to the brim with anger and hatred.
You could feel Bradley disappear, you felt it like part of your soul had been torn out of you like a page from a book, sharp and jagged.
You felt incomplete, and you screamed.
After what felt like hours, the light began to dim and your screams turned to sobbing.
You eventually opened your eyes, your fists clenched against the cold hard ground, and you were alone in the room with Bob, and Bradley’s cold body.
Bob blinking as his eyes readjusted, “Bree, baby untie me, please.” He instructed, voice strong and determined.
You stood on wobbly legs and sniffled as you stumbled toward him, your eyes landing on Bradleys body and making you want to scream again.
You dropped to your knees at Bob’s side as you removed his constraints.
The second Bob’s hands were freed, he held you.
You’d expected him to run, or to be furious at you for loving another man as well as him, or for pulling him into this mess, but there was none of that. No animosity, no resentment, just pure love and worry.
He held you on his lap for a long time as you wept, stroking your hair and kissing your wet face as he rocked you back and forth.
“I’m sorry.” You sniffled. “For everything, I’m so sorry.”
Bob didn’t say anything for a while, but eventually he sighed and shook his head, “Bree I don’t pretend to understand your world, but I do understand that you can’t help who you’re destined for, and who you love. I know you didn’t mean for any of this, it’s fate, just like how you and I came together…Can you just answer me one thing?”
You looked up at Bob with watery eyes and nodded.
“Do you still love me… the same as you did before all this?”
You let out a fresh sob and nodded, “Of course, you idiot. My love for you didn’t change because of Bradley, you were always the one.”
———————————
You had no idea where the coven went when you exploded, but you knew despite the fear of them returning, you had to take some time to say goodbye to Bradley.
You sat with his body for long time, and Bob said nothing while you kissed Bradley’s cold forehead, or when you confessed to him that you really did love him all along, even though you knew he could no longer hear you.
You set the warehouse alight along with Bradley’s body, and you watched in pain as it burnt to the ground.
By the time police and firefighters had arrived, you and Bob were long gone.
You drove Bradley’s truck south and dumped it 4 miles out of a small town you’d stopped at overnight, before getting on a bus to god knows where.
You had no idea what the future held, no idea where you were going, and no idea where your mother was or if they were even still alive.
All you knew was you had Bob to protect and you would very clearly do everything in your power to do so.

“Your sanctimoniousness tires me. Science has always been the key. Witches were nothing but scientists, always. Black magic was striving to be science. Mary Shelley saw the future.”
