This is my headcanon about Evanora Harkness and her relationship with Agatha. I don’t think Evanora started out thinking she would hate her own daughter. I bet she thought she would love her daughter. Another witch for her coven, after sailing from the old world to this new world.

In the end, I think what ended up happening is Evanora projected her guilt and shame onto Agatha.

My theory is Evanora was a respected witch, who her community loved and looked up to. She has an idea in her head about who she was as a person. Kind, compassionate, spiritual. A benevolent witch. A pillar of her community.

And then she gives birth to Agatha, and she pinned her hopes on Agatha except when she gives birth and she is presented to her daughter… Evanora felt nothing for Agatha.

It could be part of Evanora’s post-partum depression but she doesn’t know that’s what it is. All she knows is she can’t bear being around baby Agatha, even as people assure her she will eventually feel her motherly instincts. This makes Evanora feel guilty, and ashamed, and as her post-partum depression goes on untreated the guilt and shame turns to blame— Why didn’t she love her own daughter? There must be something wrong with Agatha. There has to be. This pendulum then swings wildly back to guilt and shame.

Evanora see-saws between this feeling and the blame gets stronger as it appears Agatha might not have manifest magic powers, and it grows to anger and shame because she is the leader of their coven and she has a daughter that is not talented with magic.

Yes, she’s studious and she does well with ritual, analog magic but not Magick.

Blame and anger replaces shame and guilt in multiples and at first, Evanora *tries* not to let it show but it’s like a self-sustaining cycle that grows and grows when Agatha, in response to this see-saw of hot and cold emotions, develops some (as Kathryn Hahn calls them) terrible defense mechanisms to protect herself.

Agatha’s attitude and revelation that she studied dark magic, and breaking the laws of the coven, and possibly getting revealed as a siphon ends up validating Evanora’s worst thoughts about Agatha.

The shame is replaced by relief and validation that she, Evanora, is a good person, it’s just that her daughter that is broken and bad.

Rio would listen to all this self-righteous venting impassively wearing her skull face would probably say, ‘Not Cool Motive, and you still tried to kill your own daughter.’

A series that needs more love and acknowledgment is the Lord of Rathe series by Amo Jones and Meagan Brandy. This series had me hooked and I can't wait to read the rest...I love this series because I am dark and love the villains--reminded me of a Sabrina and Nicholas scratch relationship. This is a story that takes place in the underworld and involves Satan, so if you are not into that or even smut, this is not for you. I wish this was popular because I freaking want to write the character London so bad.
