IF you ever do get into Citrus I would recommend sticking to the manga since the anime for whatever reason ramps up a lot of the mangas more uncomfortable moments or adds unnecessary ones.

Alright, since I’ve received multiple asks about who I ship Sasuke with (or if I have a problem with specific ships), I’ll reiterate my posture regarding shipping culture:

I think it’s very poor, borderline shortsighted, to focus so incredibly much on the possibility of a character –that never specified being sexually interested in anyone, having a romantic partner. Besides the fact that Sasuke is a very traumatized man, a survivor of state-sanctioned genocide which affects his libido to the point of it being non-existent, the entirety of his characterization revolves around him seeking justice for his family. No. It’s not about his bond with Naruto, it’s not about his apparent sexual tension with Karin, nor is it about his crush (the fuck?) on Sakura. 

It’s Naruto the one whose characterization revolves around his bond with Sasuke, it’s Karin the one whose characterization revolves around her sexual desire for Sasuke, and it’s Sakura the one whose characterization revolves around her crush on Sasuke –Sasuke’s entire arc differs completely from theirs, as his entire goal, through the entire series, is about seeking justice for his family. 

What happens once Sasuke realizes he won’t be able to kill Itachi if he stays in Konoha? He leaves because he chooses his goal as an Avenger before his connection with Team 7 (yes, Itachi’s presence also reminded him of the imminent threat of having bonds that Itachi could easily destroy, but he doesn’t leave to protect T7, but to seek power to kill his brother). What happens once Sasuke kills Itachi? He learns about the truth behind the UCM, and decides to barge into the Kage Summit to kill Danzo and not return to Konoha. What happens once he kills Danzö? He still decides not to return and plans to bring the entire system down. I mean, where is his “bond with Naruto” in all this? Where is his “sexual tension” with Karin in all of this? Where is Sakura’s relevance in all of this? At no single moment does he focus on these bonds, often questioning the reason why these people are so adamant about pursuing him. Am I saying that they don’t matter at all to him? No, and you know that’s not the point of the post unless you’re looking for a reason to get upset in which case, I cannot help you. What I’m saying is that they’re not relevant to his main goal or characterization, as that power rests upon Itachi’s shoulders. Each character here mentioned has either more or less importance throughout his journey, but none of them are detrimental to his objective and none of them are important enough for him throughout the manga to deviate from his ambition (he even tried to kill each one of them when he deemed them a liability or they threatened the continuation of his mission).

Who do I ship Sasuke with? Nobody, I don’t enjoy a single pairing that is attributed to him, and I wish the fandom would realize that the entire plot revolves around the actions and consequences of a fascist regime, and not about who wanted to secretly or not so secretly fuck who, or who deserve his dick and who doesn’t. Yes, I’m being blunt, and some of you will think I’m exaggerating, but if you don’t see me talking about ships as often as you see me speaking about feminism or politics inside the Naruto manga, well, what a shocker, there’s a reason for it.

And to prevent people from putting words in my mouth, let me say this: I’m not saying you can’t enjoy a ship –go crazy if that’s what you want, do art, fanfics, and whatever rocks your boat, I won’t go after you trust me, but oh my god how come some of you would give a “potential romantic couple” so much more relevance than the actual plot?! Sasuke plainly and continuously reminds the characters and the readers what his true goal is and what he wants, and still, some of you will force a deep reading of a bubble of speech detached from his overall characterization to prove that he was smitten with x,y,z all along!

oh my god someone asked me about sasuke's characterization. holy shit my time has come. i hope you don't regret this because i'm about to be very annoying

it's such a broad question i didn't rly know where to start so i think i'm going to go through some popular misconceptions people have on various aspects of his character uhhhh

loyalty: not to be all 'sasuke never did anything wrong' but he didn't really do anything wrong. leaving the village and his friends behind was out of a belief that in order to avenge his clan he had to be far more powerful than he was as part of team 7. he was manipulated by itachi (love him tho) and orochimaru who deliberately exploited him as a very young child. he was also given absolutely no support to counteract these influences. kakashi tried to give him a speech, but it was far too little too late

sasuke coped with the loss of his clan by telling himself that being alone made him strong, and being around people made him weak-- because if he had bonds, he would have something he was afraid of losing. and to go after itachi he would have to have nothing to lose. it's not that he didn't care about his friends: it's that he cared so much that he knew they would get in the way of his goal

it's worth remembering that goal was the only reason he had survived up until that point, as he says when facing itachi at the hotel. i have a headcanon that he would have become suicidal if he hadn't fixated so hard on this goal and lived for it, and think itachi also thought this which is why he insisted on getting sasuke to hate him and have something to live for

friendships: a lot of people say sasuke doesn't care about his friends, mostly because he has tried to kill them (specifically naruto and sakura, also karin and he left the rest of taka/hebi behind). again, he does care, to a painful extent. during the fight against gaara's ichibi form, he says 'i won't let anyone else close to me die'. from their very first mission in land of waves, he's extremely protective of team 7 despite convincing himself that caring about people again will be his downfall

although he's already depressed and traumatized by the time he joins team 7, he grows fond of them very quickly and protects them with his life. he also indulges in their shenanigans even though he usually acts like he's above them... but he's just a child too after all. same with taka/hebi: sasuke is supposedly colder than ever by this point, but he helps his teammates and builds a dynamic with them despite always keeping them at arms length

yeah basically people mistake sasuke's quiet exterior and snarky comments for him not caring and use his darkest moments as proof of that. but he's just very introverted, naturally sarcastic and afraid of connecting with people due to his trauma and when he does snap it's because of how much he cares, not because he's a crazy violent murderer

morality: for the vast majority of the show, sasuke is vehemently against killing anyone and even ensures that no taka/hebi members kill either. kage summit arc sasuke is at his very lowest point: konoha had led him to kill the only family he had left after killing an entire clan and traumatizing him for life. it makes sense for him to have a breaking point

it's also worth remembering that here everyone (except naruto) had given up on him and were aiming to kill him. i'm not going to go as far as to say that sasuke fought out of self-defense, but it is clear that he was fighting not in his right mind

sasuke was right to kill danzo, who orchestrated the genocide of all of his people and allowed him to kill his brother who was also a victim of that system. he was also right to want to kill the elders who were similarly responsible. the only goal of his i don't agree with is wanting to destroy konoha which he states at final valley but i'm honestly not even sure how much his heart was in this. i think he just wanted naruto to fight him but that's a topic for another post

basically sasuke did nothing wrong umm anyways on to lighter (?) topics

personality: there's a common trend in this fandom that sasuke's quiet and tough exterior is entirely an act and that he's secretly very soft. i do agree that he's silly (dumb sense of humor similar to naruto's in a lot of ways) and obviously very caring, but i also think that he's genuinely very pragmatic, calculated, and introverted. i think that in a relationship though he would have moments of vulnerability, he still wouldn't be a desperate or submissive type. he shows affection by doing concrete things for other people and helping them even when not asked

his cold demeanor is partially a defense mechanism since he doesn't trust people after the massacre. but it's also because he doesn't place value in pleasantries or hierarchy, and (lovingly) has supbar social skills.

emotional intelligence: sasuke is more emotionally intelligent than people think he is. i think it's easy to see this from the few monologues we get from him, where he's very aware of his own emotions. i think his main issue is putting things into words and communicating his feelings, not that he doesn't understand them

bonus - sexuality: vaguely related to the last point??? but mostly silly, i think because of this emotional intelligence sasuke figured out he was gay pretty early. i mean... he never shows even feigned interest in any women, and no straight person dresses like that COME ON. i think he felt some guilt due to being the last uchiha with a duty to revive the bloodline, but that he also didn't imagine himself living long enough to have a relationship so it didn't really concern him

tldr sasuke is an extremely caring character who loves deeply and desires justice for those people. he's very mentally ill, mainly as a result of a government-sanctioned genocide against his people and being given absolutely no resources to cope with that. he's also incredibly gay. and i love him so mmuch god please put me down before i write anymore

As one of the main character’s there is understandably a lot to love, but bear with me i swear the list won’t be that long.

Killing Danzo. Pretty simple and straight forward, i love when Sasuke faced off against the person who manipulated his brother into murdering their clan and got some sweet sweet revenge. Seeing Danzo destroyed without any sort of real struggle on Sasuke’s part was delightful. Danzo was so weak on his own he had to steal Sharingan to have any confidence in his strength and Sasuke destroyed him easily. It was beautiful.

The look he gave Kakashi when his dumb Sensei swooped in to save them after ‘dying’ and made it look like it was the easiest thing ever. Annoyed Sasuke is life. Look at that face and tell me it’s not hilarious. He has known Kakashi for less than a year and he’s so done with him already XD.

Saving Karin. This dude had no reason to go out of his way to save Karin, but he did because deep down trauma and all Sasuke is a good dude. Ya he got lost and almost caused her death, but gdi this moment when they’re pre-teens was too good to skip because of what happens in the future.

Killing Orochimaru. King shit. Should have killed them again.

(Movie only) when he got that actress’ autograph for Naruto and chose the absolute WORST picture for it. Once again, King shit. Go Sasuke go that was delightful.

Pointing out that he has no reason to love Sakura. Look, listen listen. I’m not shitting on the ship or anyone Sasuke was talking to at the moment, but being honest with himself is an absolute win for me. I personally believe him and Kakashi had good point’s and good reason’s for why they believe what they did, and i support Sasuke for knowing he can’t make new bonds and just love someone without a reason. He has lost so much and he can’t open his heart in hope of healing the way Kakashi does and that is valid.

Copying Lee’s primary Lotus and calling it by his own created name. Just, delightful. Perfection. Great way to annoy tf out of Lee and amazing to see.

Showing up at the foot of a cliff expecting Kakashi to drop his own training to start training him because he’s ready to go. His determination to get stronger is always admirable.

Threatening to chuck Kakashi’s book, and then Kakashi himself, into the river. My boy he’s awkward but he’s trying to help i swear XD still, i get it. I’d probably do the same XD

Petting his eagle summon while Hashirama is trying to talk to him about facing Madara. I love that he clearly gives zero shits what any of the Hokage’s say (especially Hiruzen) and that he shows it in the way he just… largely ignores them.

Jumping in front of Naruto to take Haku’s attack even though dying means he can’t avenge his clan. Sasuke has had so little to hold onto since his clan’s death but he has bonded with Naruto in such a short time and made him such an important part of his life even when you can tell he doesn’t want to. It’s so sweet and sad at the same time.

The fact that out of all Kakashi’s students he actually took the lesson of teamwork the best! Sasuke doesn’t like Kakashi and he has his reason’s for that, but at the end of the day he understood the assignment Kakashi gave to his students. Sasuke didn’t have to make a whole new team to chase after Itachi, Join the Akatsuki, and kill Danzo with, but he understood that even with his improvements it would be better to have a team around him and he knew just who to pick. The most forgotten of Orochimaru’s experiments. A+ for understanding the assignment and kicking its ass (even if he did fail it a little down the line he STILL did better than Naruto ‘do it all myself’ Uzumaki and Sakura ‘drug my teammates’ Haruno.

Hi! Did Sasuke awakened any new power for Karin? Some sk shippers claim that due to Karin his sharingan evolved and therefore Karin is on the same level of importance for Sasuke as Itachi and Naruto

Sasuke evolved the power of Amaterasu when fighting with Killer Bee, because he was reminded of team seven. All the other three members of Taka put their own life in mortal danger to protect the other team members and especially Sasuke.

So he is emotionally affected and his Mangekyou Sharingan releases Amaterasu.

Karin rescues small Juugo and an injured Sasuke as Killer Bee is thrashing about. He is about to hit Karin, so Sasuke cuts off his tentacle with his chidori spear but the body of a burning Killer Bee strikes Karin anyway and Karin's body catches on Amaterasu as well.

So Sasuke, from pure instinct, tries to extinguish Amaterasu. And succeeds. It is a new power as Sasuke himself considers it.

Regardless, it's different from all the other times he evolved his sharingan. Every single time he evolved a new eye power, he was affected by extreme emotions. That's just the nature of evolving sharingan.

Twice he was affected because of Naruto. Once because of the trauma of the massacre and once when he came to know the truth about Itachi.

In case of Karin, he instinctively tries to extinguish Amaterasu flames and is able to do it. The difference between all the other times he evolves sharingan and here is that all the other times, the sharingan evolved without his actively trying to. His overwrought emotions brought it about on its own. In Karin's case, he actually actively tried to extinguish Amaterasu. And it pans out logically that if you have MS, and evolve the power of Amaterasu, you would be able to extinguish it too. Like we saw in Itachi's case. The ability to extinguish Amaterasu is a feature of the power of Amaterasu itself.

Anyway, the POINT is - Let's not get carried away with one moment of supposed 'evidence' unless it is supported consistently in the narrative. Because it would be the same as saying Naruto went kyuubi mode for Hinata which means he loves her and she has the same importance for him as Sasuke. It is called selective reading. Just like Naruto didn't really pay attention to Hinata any other time apart from when she was getting shiners in wholesale, Sasuke's interaction with Karin is limited to his interaction with Taka as a team. Not outside of it.

Sasuke has a deeply complex relationship with Itachi and Naruto for the entire duration of the manga. And between them, Naruto actually cares for him in a way Itachi couldn't even dream of. Itachi serves to hurt Sasuke where Naruto serves to heal him. Nonetheless, Sasuke's character is deeply influenced by Itachi. How can Karin even begin to compare with that? How does she actually 'influence' Sasuke? Honestly, it's ridiculous to even consider it. She is just a mere episode in Sasuke's life, where Naruto was his reason to die and then live. Itachi was his goal to reach, then kill and then avenge. Both Naruto and Itachi are responsible for providing major turning points in Sasuke's character arc.

Where exactly does Karin figure in it? Lol.

Sasuke consistently tells her to keep away, not get too close, he gets uncomfortable, just like he treats Sakura in part one. Yes, he cares for his team, not specifically Karin. He also blithely attempts to murder her when she is used as a bait by Danzo. Mission over, team over. His relationship with Taka is basically transactional. You think he would ever do that with Naruto? No. When he isn't protecting Naruto with all his skills AND his body, he is aggressively monopolizing the right to kill Naruto too, his own way, with just him, no third person factored in. Naruto is his to protect and his to kill. They are both pretty territorial of each other like that. It's kinda darkly romantic. And a little insane. But hey, love isn't rational.

Well, SS, NH, SK, NrSk, all of them like to pick and choose moments. As long as they have that, the rest can go to hell. Lol. Well, that is not how character dynamics are judged.

Not very hard to understand sns. At the base they are sakura haters, and want to be with sasuke. Sakura is obviously not an option because she is less powerful than sasuke, so they aren't equal or whatever, hence, she isn't the one they can use. That leaves Naruto since karin can be eliminated by the same logic. Naruto is very, very bad for sasuke. But according to sns, he stands up to him, fights him, and even turns out to be stronger. Hence, perfect for self-insert shipping since they're dynamic fits there easy. Easy to make tropes, situations, etc about sasuke and Naruto, but all these ppl don't understand sasuke one bit, but just like Naruto , they want to own him. I do ship ss, but I have read a lot of top sns during my early Naruto days and comparing it to sns fiction now, it hasn't changed one bit. Most of them are about how sasuke's redemption journey is not at all important, how sasuke's feelings aren't important, he's just a toy for Naruto to get in the end. No travelling for them obviously, since Naruto is a complete nationalist and no one even dares to try and make him hate konoha or realise sasuke's desire for revenge. Little to no hate for hinata, she's used to make sasuke jealous, sakura bashing almost always, sometimes even bashing Sai for no reason at all, hating on team taka/team 7 depending on their interpretation. I've also observed that the threat to their ship is mostly sakura, but never hinata. Hinata is never the problem because they are all self inserting as Naruto, he can have as many people in love with him as they want, but god forbid sasuke may have ambiguous feelings for sakura or they may even have dated in the past. Although hinata is also not treated very kindly as well, she is just used to make sasuke jealous, or for Naruto to reject, and then simply fade into the background. Sometimes she is also bashed, but it's mostly sakura in sns fics. It's funny and sad that no one really understands sasuke, majority of sns, ss , and God the sk and sasuhina shippers , who are the weirdest bunch of them all XD

All of them in general want sasuke to repent for his revenge , for leaving so and so behind, but it's never about them understanding why and how hard it was for him to do so. Sasuke has just become this object to achieve, as if his perspective isn't important at all. Kishimoto has done a lot of things wrong in Naruto , but making sasuke this complex and unreachable for 90% of the series has mostly started these fan wars. Sns love to call sakura obsessed with sasuke for no reason or shallow reasons , but they can't see that Naruto was just as obsessed, and if they can, they can't see just how obsessed they are with sasuke, for no good reason other than the fact that he would look good with their self insert.

This is the problem with maximum pro sasuke ppl on Tumblr as well as outside, they all turn out to be sns , which just makes their entire page a lie, if you are pro sasuke , hate konoha, but turn around and ship sasuke with the number 1 nationalist Naruto, you really do have some issues lol.

I've been in the fandom for a while now, and despite all the losses sns have had to face, they still are trying to find material in boruto to support their self insert ships, and go hysterical when they are beaten by canon ships, most ss because nh has been dry for content lately, it's very fun to watch them try to cancel entire companies like viz, whose translations they often use to discredit sakura at every turn. It's sakura they are the most scared of, both the people in their otp loved her in their lives, hence she must be eliminated at all times. People are this defensive only when they start thinking that they are one half of their otp.

They're so many examples of this on Tumblr where a pro sasuke who is anti ss turns out to be sns, when the sasuke they all adore, the one in shippuden, had no interest in anyone but his desire to avenge the uchiha.

Same problem with sakura x others, to try and diminish sasuke's value in her life is the dumbest shit I have ever seen and makes me instantly abandon a story. Even if she falls out of love, don't make it seem like it was just a crush or sasuke abhors her. There are stories in which sasuke is downright cruel to her even after his redemption, just to villainize him. It's awful to see how little people understand sasuke, and just use him however for the sake of their self insert. It's making me hate fanfiction again, I definitely agree with you, sasuke is mostly character assassinated in these stories, and it's hard to find stuff where his perspective is properly considered, especially in the sns side of the fandom.

What do you think Sasuke was going to say after "Naruto, I..."?? It really bothers me that Kishi left it unsaid.

Sasuke doesn't express himself much but whenever he is near Naruto, all of his emotions seem to pour out. Even if he couldn't complete what he started saying...his eyes tried to convey it to him, before leaving him.

Both of the panels you've attached here, just made me go, "Woah!!!! Wait a sec, what's going on??!!!!" for the first time in the series!!!! And Kishimoto intentionally left it ambiguous to convey the readers that the bond between them is not usual!!!

There are endless possibilities of what Sasuke might’ve wanted to say. But we can just speculate what Sasuke wanted to tell him based on the shared experiences and feelings.

The word Sasuke said in that scene was,

ナルト... オレは...

Naruto ... Ore wa...

Naruto ... I...

Sasuke could easily say, ‘I am Sorry’ here... Because he fought and hurt Naruto Physically and Mentally. And I’ve never seen Sasuke apologizing to any one in Part 1. Probably, with no one around, he could definitely ask an emotional ‘Sorry’ here, atleast to Naruto. 

But

The word ‘Sorry’ never starts with ‘Ore Wa’ in Japanese. Most used terms for Sorry is ‘Gomen’, ‘Sumanagata’ (This is the word Sasuke used as an apology towards Sakura and Karin)... Sometimes people use ‘Warui’ or ‘Yuruse’ (The word Itachi used towards Sasuke).

Added to that, even in Chapter 698 & 699, Sasuke never apologized to Naruto, Well, he never needed to nor Naruto would expect him to because his tears are enough... No need for words. 

Logically, that’s not a super secret word to interrupt halfway. If Sasuke said ‘Thank You’ to Sakura before knocking her out, then he could’ve easily said ‘Sorry’  to Naruto as well.

So, The word ‘Naruto ... I am Sorry’ can be easily eliminated. 

Next possibility is, ‘Naruto... I am an Avenger.’ and add something along with it. Because, We have seen Sasuke uttered this line to Sakura alone, twice in this series. Even in one of the Filler Episode, Sasuke completed that line with “Ore wa fukushuusha da” standing before Naruto. Meaning, “I’m an Avenger”. So, we can totally take this line as something Sasuke wanted to say to Naruto. In a sense, “Naruto... I am Avenger. I cannot obtain power here...”

But

Sasuke has already said, “Does staying with my comrades made me any stronger? I am going to Orochimaru”.... “If that’s the case, I will break that Bond”. Compared to these words, “I am an Avenger” feels silly, childish and too funny. This is the line Sasuke could've easily told Naruto at any point of the time during the Battle. He really didn't have to wait till the end.

And with the way Sasuke paused in the middle panel, It feels like he was going to say something very personal.

So, The line ‘Naruto... I am an Avenger’ can also be eliminated.

Another possibility I could think of is, ‘Naruto... I could never kill you’... This is another way to admit his true feelings he had about Naruto throughout the battle. Because, Sasuke’s real motivations were unknown until that point. Everyone would have thought Sasuke truly wanted to kill Naruto by treading towards that dark path. And this was the same in the Orochimaru Lair, Under the Bridge promise where Sasuke said “Fine then, I’ll Kill you First” and the second VoTE battle.

Even though Sasuke could gather some strong mental resolve to kill Naruto, his body and heart will never let him do that. And earlier in the VoTE1 battle, Naruto felt utterly betrayed when he realized that Sasuke was truly trying to kill him. 

‘Naruto... I could never kill you’... can be taken as a way of making up for that betrayal. Or like a small-confession which explains his POV. Imagine if only Sasuke said this line at that time, we all would’ve assumed that, ‘Sasuke was acting like a Tsundere to make Naruto hate him.’... Also, that line would’ve reduced the suspense and emotional impact we got from Chapter 698. Because only after Chapter 698, we get the perspective that Sasuke could never able to kill Naruto because of that dramatic Confession.

And that’s why Kishi might have made that abrupt pause at ‘Naruto... I’. And much later Kishi made Sasuke to say to himself, ‘I will not abide by your words... I will obtain power in my own way’... By making Sasuke say this, Kishi made the readers believe that Sasuke didn’t kill Naruto because he didn’t want to follow Itachi’s footsteps. If only he completed that line, we would have found out that Not following Itachi’s footsteps is an after thought and a mere excuse when in reality he could never able to. 

So, The line ‘Naruto... I could never kill you’ is a good possibility.

Next one I could think of is, ‘Naruto... I don’t want to leave you alone’. The word 'Loneliness' is something that brought both Naruto and Sasuke to notice each other. Even in Chapter 698, Naruto said, ‘I can’t just leave you alone’. Which was exactly how Sasuke felt about Naruto all along during his Genin Days. 

He went out of his way to look for Naruto during Tree Climbing Training and stayed with him. Because Sasuke doesn’t want to leave him alone. When Sasuke heard that Itachi came to the village and was looking for Naruto, he desperately searched for Naruto everywhere to make sure Itachi doesn’t catch him first.

And when Sasuke left Naruto alone in the VoTE1, we could definitely see Sasuke was under so much pain. Which means 'Departing from Naruto’ was the last thing he ever wanted to do but still he did it. He is doing something he never wanted to do and probably Sasuke wanted to confess that before leaving Naruto. 

So, There is a great chance that Sasuke wanted to say ‘Naruto... I don’t want to leave you alone’.

Next, my Favourite one is, ‘Naruto... I always wanted to be with you’. This is something both Naruto and Sasuke wanted from their childhood ever since they noticed and acknowledged each other's existence.

Naruto stopped himself from approaching Sasuke because he felt Inferior. Sasuke stopped because he thought it was a weakness. But both, truly, deep down... they liked each other’s presence. Which was very evident from how Sasuke can make different ‘funny faces’ when he was with Naruto during his Genin Days.

When life is going terribly haunting and then someone makes you feel relieved... Then you like to be around that person. It’s very natural. And Sasuke always felt the presence of his Family when he was with Naruto. 

And this line 'I always wated to be with you' is something very child-like and filled with innocence but conveys certain ‘attraction’ and love which can’t be defined with proper words. And with the way Sasuke’s face hovering over Naruto’s face with a painful expression, it may also be considered a symbolic representation of ‘I want to be with you....for one final time’.

And that’s why I feel Sasuke saying ‘Naruto... I always wanted to be with you’ is my favourite and has a high possibility.

And the final possibility is the very obvious one, that is, ‘Naruto... I love you’.... For this, there’s no need for any explanation. This is a common Interrupted confession trope which I have seen in many movies and TV series. Normally, this trope is employed whenever a character was about to confess their love and due to some external factor, it usually gets interrupted.

Just like how Robin wanted to confess her love for Barney in 'How I met your Mother' in Season 7 Episode 1.

I've seen this very similar scene in another popular movie... Spiderman : Far from home.

ROFL... Peter totally wanted to say "M.J... I Love You" but was interrupted by Mary Jane herself.

And especially after seeing Chapter 698 confession, we knew that Sasuke always liked Naruto and that’s why he did many surprising things for him in Part 1 even though they hadn’t become friends. 

Why would a person like Sasuke, who prioritizes his goals, must abandon them for a person who has not even become acquainted with??? When Sasuke gave his life for Naruto, they both were just some unknown entities. We just saw them getting to know each other when they were doing the Tree Climbing Training. And that’s all. 

Or if we go before that,

They weren’t even friends and yet Sasuke just offered his lunch knowing the consequences of losing his Ninja Career. Why take risk for an unknown teammate???

Because there’s something he liked about Naruto back when they were 8 and felt relieved. And after that when they were put together in the same team, Sasuke just couldn’t act like he hates Naruto. So, he started to open up by initiating with Friendly Gestures like this!!! 

And all these ‘risk-taking’ moments with no valid foundation of Friendship (apart from that time they smiled at each other when they were 8), screams ‘certain’ attraction which Sasuke himself didn’t know what it was in the beginning of Part 1. 

But probably after this moment,

Sasuke might have realized he has certain feelings for Naruto. 

And whatever he thought about Naruto in this above panel before his 'supposed' death, he might have wanted to put into a single line and say, ‘Naruto...I Like/Love you' in VoTE1... Just like how Sasuke couldn’t confess Chapter 698 confession out loud to Naruto, he could never say 'I Love you' out loud looking at Naruto’s face. Ever. At least while Naruto was knocked out, Sasuke could be totally honest with himself & Naruto and say those words before leaving him.

Oh, By the Way.... Sasuke already said something opposite to how he really felt before.

“I used to hate you, you know”

And probably this time, Sasuke wanted to say the truth before leaving Naruto by saying, “Naruto, I.... like/love you”.

So, Sasuke saying ‘Naruto... I Love You’ is very possible as a way of being honest with himself for one final time. And with the way Sasuke looked at Naruto, he probably could’ve completed with this specific sentence off-screen. Because it’s not something that can be said out loud.

So, Yeah!!! These are the only possibilities I could imagine. Because Anything other than these lines, could’ve been easily completed or said directly. Since, the nature of their feelings are unusual, Kishi intentionally let it interrupted by Rain and left it incomplete.

Hence, we can eliminate ‘I am Sorry’ and ‘I am an Avenger’ from the possibilities.

But ‘Naruto... I could never kill you’ and ‘Naruto... I don’t want to leave you alone’ has a very good possibilities which somehow mirrors Sasuke’s inner feelings blatantly.

However, my clear favourite from the above is, “Naruto... I always wanted to be with you” because this sentence is very innocent and haunting at the same time. And my next favourite is the obvious one, that is, “Naruto... I Love You”. Because Why not??? Sasuke really loved Naruto unconditionally.

Toxic Simping Vs One Sided Love : Naruto Anime

Naruto has a crush on Sakura: 

This is usually seen as Naruto’s pure love being ignored by Sakura despite multiple attempts. As a result of which Sakura is usually Hated by the fandom. ‘But here’s the thing. A Girl is NOT a trophy or an object that you can win just because how passionately you are trying to achive it. She’s a human being and her personal preference matters. 

And this is where this trope becomes toxic simping. As the other person, who has not done anything other than your reject your advances, Is framed as the bad person. Sakura is always blamed for this. Imagine if it was some other character doing the same with Hinata, everyone would have called him a creep.

But since Sakura hate is a cool and trending topic, everyone wants to join in.

Obito has a crush on Rin:

Same thing about Obito , who has a crush on rin but Rin in fact likes Kakashi. And now Obito blames Kakashi for his broken heart. Even some fans treat Rin as a Joke ( although not as much as Sakura, since Rin died), simply bcoz she rejected our good boy Obito.

Sakura, Karin and all other girls Having crush on Sasuke:

Don’t get me wrong, its not just an issue when a boy is constantly following a girl. Its an issue even when the genders are reversed.

One of the main reason fans hate on Sasuke is how he ignores all the girls that really like him. But is he really obliged to say yes to everyone?

Again a person is not a trophy that u can compete for. 

Lets consider Sasuke’s case. This is a kid who lost his parents, neighbours, relatives, his entire fucking clan in one night. And he saw it happen. Not just once. No no no. He saw it happen on rewind loop again and again. And the person who killed his parents and clan was none other than his beloved elder brother. So now his sole purpose in life is to Avenge and restore his Clan by killing his Elder brother.

And for that he has to focus only on getting stronger and nothing else. Can you blame him for taking his training seriously?? Nope. Since his task is ... Killing Itachi fxking Uchiha. Like how do u even think about Killing someone like that??

He knows he has no life, and that;s more reason he doesn;t want to involve anyone in his life. He even mentions that to Sakura multiple times in early episodes before leaving konoha.

One-Sided Love of Rock Lee:

Now, why this is different that Naruto and Obito’s Simping? 

Its bcoz unlike Naruto who constantly tries to bother Sakura, Rock lee is more gentle. He wants to show sakura his love but also doesnt constantly bother her. And after realising that Saku loves Sasuk, He stops bothering Sakura, which i find is a very mature thing to do. And also very underrated. Just like many other things in the series, this aspect of Rock lee is also ignored and fans simply talk abt how uch naruto/obito loved their crushes.

ALSO...

I know the intentions of a person passionately loving someone even when they are rejected is usually meant to be reflecting a true love. But at times, the other person gets a bad reputaion for being to rude, which is not at all the case. Its definetly not the intention of Kishimoto but thats what it ends up representing for most fans. Lazy writing or people judging the writing from their own narrow minded perspective?

P.S. I ship Sasusaku, Naruhina , my objection is to how its presented.

Rambling, Unorganized Naruto Band AU

Minato is a former teen idol turned manager for a band composed of Rin, Obito, and Kakashi. They’re on their way to the top when Obito is injured in a stage accident that ultimately ends his music career. Rin leaves the music industry as a result and starts working in sea turtle conservation. (Obito resurfaces years later as an EDM musician with a mask under the pseudonym Tobi.)

Kakashi dicks around as a solo artist for a few years and eventually starts managing an up and coming band composed of Sakura, Sasuke, and Naruto.

Sasuke’s older brother, Itachi, was a rising star. Under pressure from his manager, Danzo, he teamed up with a band called the Akatsuki to toughen up his image. The Akatsuki were a rock band with a reputation for partying hard. While Itachi does gain new fans, he falls into the world of drugs and eventually OD’s.

Sasuke is determined to avenge the Uchiha name, so he has to make it to the top. Unfortunately, his band mates aren’t as dedicated. He’s eventually lured away by producer, Orochimaru, who promises to make Sasuke famous, and goes solo. (Sasuke plays all his own instruments in the recording studio, but team taka are his touring band.)

Sasuke and Taka eventually part ways with Orochimaru to start their own indie label.

Sasuke is replaced in Team 7 by alternative musician Sai. His older brother, Tenzou, is a bit overprotective because Sai is autistic, so he sticks around to ensure his little brother isn’t taken advantage of. That, and he has a crush on Kakashi.

Unless otherwise stated: nations are record companies, Hokage are presidents/ceos, Summons are mascots, teams are bands, and Sensai are managers.

Team ebisu: Konohamaru, moegi, and udon are high school students in ebisu’s music class. Konohamaru is Naruto’s biggest fan and next door neighbor.

Sand siblings: Theyre a death core band, or some kind of metal. Gaara on lead guitar and vocals, Temari on drums, Kankuro on bass. Kankuro and Temari also do cool special effects for their music videos. Shukaku is a creature mascot they made up for their band of the same name.

Team 7. Sakura plays drums and does backing vocals. Sasuke plays bass and lead vocals. Naruto plays lead guitar and refuses to be resigned to backing vocals. Sasuke has the best voice and is the most musically gifted, but Naruto has passion. Sakura is the only person holding this mess together. Sai joins them later and becomes their main lyric writer. Kuruma is their mascot. Naruto constantly tweets picks of his pet toads. Kakashi literally has 8 dogs. Menma is an artistic persona Naruto assumed in a set of music videos.

Team 8. Kiba and Hinata both do vocals. Shino is heavily influenced by classic Linkin Park. Kiba plays drums. Hinata plays keytar. Shino plays bass. Akamaru is Kiba’s dog and the official band mascot. Kurenai does all their album artwork.

Team Gai. Tenten plays drums. She’s heavily influenced by all girl rock bands. Neji sings and plays piano. He is classically trained. Lee plays the drums and posts behind the scenes videos of everything and it’s almost always just videos of Neji doing normal things and then getting mad about being recorded. Gai is a very active manager.

Team 10. This band has RANGE to rival Fergie. Ino is the top female artist of the year. She sings and plays lead guitar. Choji plays drums. Shikamaru plays bass and gripes about practice. Asuma tells them not to do drugs - He does not practice what he preaches. I have a very vivid image in my head of Ino covering Jet’s “Are You Gonna Be My Girl?”

All four teams have toured together pretty regularly.

Team Taka. Suigetsu plays lead guitar. Juugo plays bass. Karin plays drums. Sasuke plays any other instrument needed and sings.

The Sannin. They rose to fame quickly but split soon after due to artistic differences. Orochimaru became the next mcr. Tsunade started her own record company. Jiraiya writes bad romance novels for a living.

Team Minato. Kakashi sings lead vocals and plays bass. Rin plays lead guitar and sings backing vocals. Obito plays drums. (Maybe switch Rin and obito’s instruments?)

The akasuki. Nagato is the head of their indie record label before they’re bought by madara’s company. Yahiko is nagato’s assistant. Itachi records with them but he’s not an official member of the band. They tour together a lot. Same with Tobi . Orochimaru was a guest artist on one album. Konan plays keytar and sings lead vocals. Deidara and Zetsu are roadies and head the special effects crew. Kakuzu plays drums. Hidan plays lead guitar. Sasori plays violin. Kisame plays bass guitar.

Idk how the fourth shinobi war fits into this, but I imagine there’s some kind of revolution in the music industry? Or maybe Madara advocates for vocaloids and auto tune over real musicians cause if he’s not the top artist, nobody can be! And Tobi, as a DJ and EDM artist can totally get behind that because it doesn’t affect his job security.

The founders are some sort of musical pioneers? Maybe like the Beatles? Tobirama is @k1dekismadaratemple’s swag tobirama. They eventually break up because Madara and tobirama won’t stop fighting. Hashimada also complicated things.

Kaguya is obviously some sort of musical pioneer, too. Maybe Elvis-like? Ooh! Or she invents auto tune! Or just makes it popular. Or maybe she’s a vocaloid!

Neji and Hinata’s dads were in a band together. When they broke up, Hinata’s dad got the rights to all of their music,

Taka’s members’ bond with Sasuke. (For Taka team’s stans, this one’s for you.)

I don't think there's any point in introducing the Taka team again.

But as today's point is to prove the link as a point of complementarity with Sasuke. I'm going to take a look at the personal lives of each of them. 

Ps: sorry for the typos, english is not my mother tongue.

SUIGETSU:

We are going to start with Suigetsu, like Sasuke, Suigetsu had a big brother, pretty strong and skilled because Mangetsu was the only one of the 7 swordsmen of the mist to master the 7 swords of Kiri. Suigetsu's dream was to become as strong as his big brother to enter the 7 swordsmen assassins club, whom he admired a lot, but Mangetsu died rather prematurely while protecting his little brother Suigetsu. Suigetsu trained hard to barely match half of his big brother's sword skills. He also comes from a known clan from the village of Kiri, the clan Hozūki, and owns a Kekkei Genkai, which allows him to liquefy his body from flesh to water. Pretty handy for a swordsman, isn't it?  No blade can pierce his body. That's also why Orochimaru was interested in him and kept him prisoner in his laboratories for so many years. Doesn't that remind you of Sasuke? The story of the big brother to be surpassed in abilities, even though he was so admired by the little one? Sasuke had to kill Itachi because he had to avenge his clan, Suigetsu had to become much better than Mangetsu because he promised him before Mangetsu died, that he would take back the title of "Kijin no Sairai" - "the second coming of the demon" (as far as my translation is concerned), so he got it into his head to collect all the swords from Kiri village, in order to take back his brother's inheritance. It's rather cute when you think about it. Suigetsu, in spite of appearances, is not a deeply evil person even if he spent most of his life training to become an assassin. Of all the times he made fun of Karin for her feelings towards Sasuke and Karin hit him, he never twisted back once. Suigetsu doesn't have a family anymore, like Sasuke, he's the last survivor of his clan. Moreover, I wanted to add that Suigetsu, sometimes appears like a coward but is actually very competent, and he is certainly a better swordsman than Sasuke. At the same age, (at 16 years old) Suigetsu had already done 2 - D rank missions, 33 - C rank missions - 40 - B rank missions, 13 - A rank missions and finally 4 - S rank missions originally reserved for jônin, can he be considered as such?

KARIN:

What do we know about Karin?

At first, not much is said, except that she is a very competent sensory ninja, that Sasuke, with Suigetsu came personally to look for. He chose her, among many other competent ninjas. He acknowledged her as the best in her field. That's a canon fact. 

Another true thing, Sasuke, who came personally to pick her up, confessed that he needed her to reach his goal.

"I need you, Karin", really happened. 

He wasn't forced to do it, on the contrary, Suigetsu, who wasn't a big fan of Karin, spent his time dissuading Sasuke from going to pick her up and take her on the team, but Sasuke insisted.

They saved each other's lives several times. Karin healed him with her "Heal Bite" and he during their fight against Killer Bee, awakened a new power from his Mangekyō Sharingan: Kagutsuchi. He was able to extinguish the flames of the Amaterasu that had touched Karin. His face, scared of losing his teammate, proves how much Sasuke cares about his Taka teammates but especially about Karin. After I will not go on betting that he cares about her, romantically or just friendly because that's not the point and nothing in the manga proves that he did it romantically or kindly, I just want to emphasize this point: he was willing to die, and put Juugo's and Suigetsu's lives in danger in order to save Karin.

We learn a little more about Karin, during the Edotensei scene with Itachi and Sasuke against Kabuto. Kabuto then talks about Taka team members and reveals to Sasuke that Karin is indeed part of the Uzumaki clan, like Naruto, and that's why she has a huge chakra cluster. She regenerates quickly her own wounds but she can help others to regenerate and heal themselves by sharing her chakra, by biting her because it's the fastest way: in fact, the injured person drinks Karin's chakra and regenerates herself/himself in a few moments.

Besides the fact that Karin was used by Sasuke to locate Itachi through her powerful chakra and to warn him of his possible enemies, and of course to heal him in case he would be seriously wounded, she is not an exceptional ninja in combat, she must even very often be saved either by Sasuke or by Suigetsu. Sasuke knew that very well. He was never shocked that Karin might be a weight for them in their adventures. He chose her by himself, nobody forced Karin to be there and decided to protect her.

The scene where Sasuke "sacrifices" Karin to kill Danzō is totally a scene to be taken with extenuating circumstances. Sasuke finally being in front of the person who ruined his life, who ordered the massacre of the Uchiha clan, he couldn't do otherwise, he was forced by all means to kill him. Karin being in his field of action because she wanted to help him, was also pierced by Sasuke's chidori blade. Don't forget though, that he didn't really sacrifice her because she didn't die, since he didn't aim at Karin's vital points.

I still want to thank Sakura for helping Karin with her medical ninjutsu, she is still part of Karin's healing process, without Sakura's intervention, she might have had a hard time healing this time.

I also wanted to point out, on the scene following Karin's famous "sacrifice":

Karin thus finds herself on the ground, dying slowly, Obito then proposes to Sasuke to finish her off, properly because she knows too much about their plan. Sasuke doesn't even take the time to answer him. During this scene, Sasuke takes an exceptional time to load his chidori, giving Team 7 time to arrive on the scene, another proof that deep down he really didn't want to kill her. It is finally on Sakura that Sasuke decides to use his chidori, and not on Karin. Karin then dissuades him... but Sakura is really not far from being killed this time by Sasuke.

This scene is powerful, but it shows the total disinterest of Team 7 in the eyes of Sasuke, at least the disinterest he has in Sakura's life. Sakura being a burden, and considering her as the enemy, had to be eliminated as soon as possible. He was also never afraid to confront Kakashi. The only one for which he has doubts, a certain apprehension that he tries indirectly to hide, remains definitely for Naruto, but again, he does not hesitate to threaten him if Naruto still chases after him.

To finish with Karin, she is part of the Uzumaki clan, one of the oldest clans in the Shinobi world, and derived from the Senju clan, there are not many members of the clan left, at least to our knowledge except Karin, Naruto and Nagato. At the end of the war, only Karin and Naruto remain. She shares this fact with Sasuke. She also had lost her entire family during the previous war, her mother was used for medical purposes, literally having her chakra sucked until her death. She became an orphan at a very young age, left to live on her own, abused by others until she met Orochimaru. She has no one left.When she meets Sasuke, she falls in love with him for his beauty, he is pretty handsome, but as a sensory ninja, she found that he has a beautiful and attractive chakra, she realized right away that Sasuke is not as bad as he pretends to be. She took a close interest in him, and I think the interest was mutual.

JŪGO:

Jūgo, is certainly the only member where we are poorly with information about him.

Jūgo is a deeply kind and loving boy but is possessed by a heavy weight that overwhelms him: the cursed seal. He is the first holder of the cursed seal, it is with his DNA that Orochimaru started his experiments. The poor man, being unable to control his murderous impulses, preferred to die rather than to leave his cell when Sasuke, Suigetsu and Karin came to get him. Sasuke promised to hold him, Jūgo, usually not confident, agrees to come with them because Kimimaro had acknowledged Sasuke. Jūgo, in addition to his incredible physical strength when possessed by the cursed seal, is able to communicate with the birds. Sasuke uses Jūgo through this ability so that his birds can locate the Akatsukis' hideout and that he can create a map from the information transmitted by these birds. Also, Jūgo is an orphan, and since Kimimaro died, he was literally alone in the world. He has no known family, and his affiliation to a particular clan is unknown. Another peculiarity that Sasuke shares with his teammates.

I consider Jūgo as Sasuke/Suigetsu/Karin’s big brother. He took care of them. There also is a scene where he puts Sasuke in his futon after having treated him and bandaged him, because Sasuke had fallen asleep sitting, from exhaustion.

This boy is soooooo cute and gentle. His bipolar side contrasts enormously. His murderous personality with his soft and wise side.

                 Well, Sasuke's plan was perfect and well thought out.

 To answer the question I was asked, "What do they do as Team Taka, besides help Sasuke enter into darkness?"

I, for one, don't hold Team Taka members responsible for Sasuke's entry into the darkness. Far from it. Sasuke was motivated by his hatred for killing Itachi, and after the final battle with his brother, motivated by revenge for those who led to his downfall. Don't get me wrong, I always feel that when it comes to Sasuke, the people who interact with him are responsible for his actions. No, Sasuke most certainly suffers from PTSD, living in unresolved grief since the death of his family, in hatred and constant pain, doesn't need anyone to think for him. He's an intelligent boy, he knows his purpose, he knows he would sacrifice himself to restore honor to those he has lost. His goal was just that. I sincerely think that deep down Sasuke wanted to change the Shinobi world, build new foundations, and achieve peace, so that what he experienced would never happen again, but it was a kind of pipe dream because he really thought he would die in his next confrontation with Naruto. He expected no less.

It really pisses me off that people think that Sasuke is acting according to the actions of others. I don't remember hearing Suigetsu, Karin or Jugo suggest a plan of action to kill someone or do something. He was the leader of this team. The others were acting on his behalf and not the other way around. He was the one who came to find them, he was the one who surrounded himself with these shinobis to help him achieve his goal. You let yourself be influenced by Naruto “talk no jutsu” in Gaiden who dares to tell the Taka team to mind their own business when he himself spent years to mind Sasuke's business, without even understanding the reason for his actions.

Gaiden makes the Taka team look like the villains who helped Sasuke carry out the actions of his hatred, but look closer, they did nothing so exceptional except help him find Itachi and obey Akatsuki's orders to attack Killer B.

It even seems to me that the Taka team were, in the end, the only ones who listened sincerely to Sasuke, to meet his expectations, to try to understand him. 

A non-canon fact unfortunately, in a novel about Sasuke, after Itachi's death, Sasuke makes a kind of pilgrimage to learn more about his brother, during his Akatsuki period, and then meets two brothers, who were preparing drops for Itachi's eyes, and they make him think about him and Itachi when they were kids. ... I'm going to skip over the real story of this novel, although it's very well written for a non-canon novel, and we find Sasuke on his scene, by the sea, where he desperately lets go of all his pain in a torrent of tears, and decides to rename Hebi team into Taka team.

Karin, Suigetsu and Jugo were present during one of the worst moments of Sasuke's life: Itachi's death and thus the mourning of his older brother.

In spite of Itachi's terrible actions and choices to raise Sasuke's power, Sasuke still considers him as his beloved older brother who sacrificed himself for a village that never gave them the chance to live, properly...

Again, as I already said in another post, I truly think that all the people close to Sasuke tried to control his choices and his life, without asking his opinion.

Itachi made it clear that he tried to trace Sasuke's life from his childhood to what he became and finally disappointed to have failed... but what the hell did he expect?

Naruto, who absolutely wants Sasuke to go back to Konoha, but why? He knew very well that the people in Konoha would bully him for his actions, when he was already bullied enough to be an Uchiha in Konoha. So Naruto claims to know what's best for Sasuke. What?!

Sakura... is Sakura.

Kakashi and Jiraya tried to dissuade Sakura and Naruto from desperately pursuing a guy who clearly wanted to get the hell out of this village: Sasuke is not worth it.

Decidedly, Sasuke doesn't get much grace from people. Between those who think he's a sulky, who always makes moods because he has some problems in his life and those who judge him without knowing a second of his existence and his journey, he's really badly surrounded.

The Taka team is the only one that hasn't gone into the details and is following Sasuke, even before he decides to explain to them the reasons for this gathering.

I like their complicity. I like their dynamics. They help each other.

Team Taka is the one that Sasuke chose on his own, Team 7 is the one that was imposed on him. Don't forget that.

Markings Chapter 4

Sakura did not see her friends much for the next week. There were supplies to pack, reports to write, communications to send, and travel arrangements to be made. She worked late and ate with the other medics.

But after the sky darkened and the camp grew quiet, she slipped into Sasuke’s tent. He was always waiting for her. In the mornings she left before he awakened to tackle the day’s work.

In Sasuke’s bed, Sakura thought about all the impossible twists her life had taken. She was a commoner and she had ripped the horn from a deity’s head. She was a girl with pink hair and she could move mountains and heal armies. She had wished for Sasuke to come back and now he was in her arms. Sakura was a force of gravity. When the impossible approached her, it bent into the shape she wanted.

Sakura had told Sasuke the truth. All she wanted for him was to find peace, whatever that looked like.

But she would not mind, at all, if he chose to stay.

Around the fire, Taka finally breached the topic of what came next.

“What do you think, Sasuke?” Suigetsu asked. “More fancy robes in our future?”

Sasuke scuffed up the dirt with his shoe. “I was thinking of traveling. Alone.”

In place of anger or resentment, his teammates wore sympathetic expressions.

Karin pointed out the obvious. “If that’s what you really wanted, then why haven’t you already left?”

The members of Taka already knew the answer to this question.

Sasuke closed his eyes, because part of the answer sat before him. The other part, he held close each night.

Later, Sasuke awoke in the early morning. Sakura lay nestled against his chest. She had not yet left. He fought sleep. When he woke up again, she was gone.

It was the last night. They finished another quiet dinner. When they were done, Karin spoke again.

“I don’t want to tell you how to feel, Sasuke. But you’re not alone anymore. You haven’t been for a while. Maybe instead of punishing yourself, you should think about what makes you happy. Who makes you happy. What do you want?”

Sasuke stared at the names etched into their table.

For so long, all Sasuke had wanted was his revenge. He had not given himself the luxury to desire anything else. There was no time, no space. He needed to kill his brother and avenge his clan. Then destroy Konoha to avenge his brother. Then fight alongside Konoha to honor his brother.

And now that was done. The voice inside him calling for vengeance was silent. The burning flame of Sasuke’s purpose had fizzled out.

Sasuke was the night sky, the stars unveiled in this absence of light. He could now see what he wanted.

He peered at his teammates. “Do you still want to follow me?”

Suigetsu smiled a sharp grin and Jugo blinked his serious eyes.

“We're a team,” Karin spoke for them all. “We go where you go.”

“I need to talk to Sakura,” Sasuke said.

Sakura didn’t come that night.

Sasuke sat outside and stared up at the sky. A raven winked down at him. He wondered why he couldn’t see it before.

The next day, Sakura was nowhere to be found.

New faces flooded the camp, fresh blood to assist in collapsing tents, folding tarps, and hauling crates of medical supplies. The infirmary tent, the tall beacon of the camp, did not exist anymore. The scenery that had become so familiar to Sasuke vanished around him. As he searched for Sakura, in his mind’s eye, Sasuke saw a vision of the camp from only hours ago, intact and quiet in the early light.

His feet led him to the jumble of medic tents. The afternoon sun illuminated the side of Sakura’s tent and her driftwood sentinel. Still, he rushed to the entrance, fighting the dread curdling in his stomach.

Her name sprang unbidden from his lips. “Sakura—”

A wooden comb ensnared with pink hairs lay upon her tousled blankets. A forgotten cup of tea rested on her dresser. Of course, there were Jugo’s gifts: an acorn, a feather, a bird’s nest.

For a while, in her quiet and empty tent, he stood and breathed.

“Sasuke?” a voice called.

A beam of light hit the floor by Sasuke’s feet. Sakura stood in the entryway.

Sasuke did not bother to rearrange his features. He said, “I thought you were gone.”

As he searched for her, a sunken, quiet part of his brain had whispered rationality. She would not leave without saying goodbye.

The rest of him had screamed, She left you without saying goodbye.

Sakura’s brows knit together. “I’m so sorry. I’m here.”

She threaded her fingers with his and kissed his forehead.

Sasuke almost never knew what he needed, and Sakura almost always did. She touched him when he needed a comforting touch. She pushed him to apologize when he needed to be held accountable for his actions. She kissed him when he needed her to kiss him.

Sasuke said, “If you ask me, I’ll come home.”

Her voice was a soft breeze rustling through leaves. “Sasuke, please come home.”

She asked him to come home, when he needed to come home.

Sakura put up Sasuke in her Konoha apartment while he searched for a new place to live. But weeks passed, and he never left.

Each weekend, they visited Sasuke’s family estate in the Uchiha compound. They opened the windows, swept up the dust, and fed the cats. They gathered outside with friends around a worn wooden table.

On two separate occasions, they carved more names onto its surface. Within weeks of returning to Konoha, they added Naruto’s name. Naruto’s beaming smile echoed Suigetsu’s sharp grin. His gentle strength matched Jugo’s. His Uzumaki lineage and candid humor resonated with Karin’s. The distant orbits of Taka and Team Seven grew closer until they were the same.

Years later, Sakura etched into the wood the name Uchiha Sarada, and Sasuke could not dry his wet face because he was holding their newborn daughter.

All Sasuke’s wishes were granted. They were the stars Sakura pointed at in the night sky, the constellations she invented, the markings she made.
