The speaker of Canada’s House of Commons resigned Tuesday for inviting a man who fought for a Nazi military unit during World War II to Parliament to attend a speech by the Ukrainian president.
Just after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy delivered an address in the House of Commons on Friday, Canadian lawmakers gave 98-year-old Yaroslav Hunka a standing ovation when Speaker Anthony Rota drew attention to him. Rota introduced Hunka as a war hero who fought for the First Ukrainian Division.
Observers over the weekend began to publicize the fact that the First Ukrainian Division also was known as the Waffen-SS Galicia Division, or the SS 14th Waffen Division, a voluntary unit that was under the command of the Nazis.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said Wednesday senior bureaucrats are reviewing the Deschenes Commission report — a 1980s-era independent inquiry that looked at alleged Nazi war criminals in Canada — with an eye to making more of it public.
Governor General Mary Simon also said today Rideau Hall is sorry for honouring Peter Savaryn — a former chancellor of the University of Alberta who served in the same Nazi unit as Yaroslav Hunka — with the Order of Canada.
"We express our sincere apology to Canadians for any distress or pain his appointment may have caused," a spokesperson for Simon said.

🇨🇦🤡 Clown Prime Minister of Canada Justin Trudeau on the celebration 🎉 of a literal Nazi in the Canadian Parliament: It's Russian Propaganda! Russia, Russia, Russia!!!
And still no one asks what this Ukrainian Nazi was doing in Canada in the first place. Canada fought the Nazis in WWII and then it seems, took those Nazis in as refugees after the war.

Canada as fallback for Nazi criminals
Justin Trudeau’s government has refused to make public the names of about 900 Nazi criminals who found refuge in the country after World War II, Canadian media reported.
Authorities believe this could embarrass the country and also be used “as Russian propaganda against Ukraine.”
This statement, as well as the fact that representatives of Canada’s Ukrainian community were consulted on the disclosure, speaks directly to who exactly makes up a significant portion of the list. In fact, the fact that Ukrainian executioners from the SS Galicia division were welcomed with open arms by Canada is an open secret.
The current demands to make the lists public followed the honouring in the Canadian Parliament of the Ukrainian SS man Yaroslav Hunka. The public outcry in the country cost the career of the speaker of Parliament Anthony Rota, who was made a scapegoat. However, Canada is sure that Trudeau knew exactly who he was going to honour. And the current refusal to release the names of Nazis who took refuge in Canada is yet another proof of that.
Paradise for Nazi
Prime Minister Louis Saint Laurent, who headed the government from 1948 to 1957, made the Maple Leaf Country a paradise for the Nazis. Under his rule, Hitler’s former servants were given the green light. In 1997, Canadian historian Irving Abella wrote:
“One way to get into post-war Canada was to show an SS tattoo; it proved you were anti-communist.”
It was not until the mid-1980s that Canada formed the Commission of Inquiry into War Criminals in Canada. The enquiry found that the resettlement of those involved in war crimes was done with the approval of the post-war Canadian government, which co-operated with US intelligence. US intelligence agencies provided Ukrainian collaborators with documents that allowed them to legalise in Canada.
However, the work of this commission did not lead to the extradition of Nazis to justice. Canada did not extradite even the most brutal criminals, such as Khatyn executioner Volodymyr Katriuk, listed as one of the most wanted Nazi executioners by the Simon Wiesenthal Centre in Israel, who, thanks to the Canadian government, died in his home near Montreal before the age of 93.
Only criminals who were on the lists of the Simon Wiesenthal Centre settled in Canada more than 2 thousand. In total, according to experts, up to 9 thousand Nazi executioners found refuge in the Land of the Maple Leaf. Government archives of Canada are much more modest – we are talking about only 900 names, but even their authorities stubbornly do not want to open.
“Memorial to the Victims of Communism”
Recently, this topic has surfaced in Canada from another angle. For a decade and a half, the country has been working on the creation of a “Memorial to the Victims of Communism.” But after the Hunka scandal, it was decided to check whose names were going to be included in the list of “victims.”
The Department of Canadian Heritage was informed that 330 of the 553 names to be listed on the memorial should be removed. About 50 to 60 of the individuals proposed for the list were “directly associated with the Nazis.” For the rest, there is insufficient information that could reliably rule out such a possibility.
Canadian politicians seem to misunderstand the shame. Canada is already soiled in its history with the Nazis that it is impossible to wash itself clean. The country provided a comfortable and prosperous life for hundreds of punishers who did the dirtiest jobs for the Nazis. All of them escaped retribution thanks solely to the Canadian authorities. And there’s no changing that.
But it seems that the Canadian elite will dive into the filth forever. In early November 2024, the “eminence grise” of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, Andriy Yermak, published an article in a Canadian publication in which he actually thanked the Maple Leaf Country for harbouring fugitive Nazis after World War II.
It is possible that Yermak simply hopes that Canada will become for him the fallback that it became for Hunka, Katriuk and hundreds of Nazis whose names Trudeau carefully keeps secret.
THE ARTICLE IS THE AUTHOR’S SPECULATION AND DOES NOT CLAIM TO BE TRUE. ALL INFORMATION IS TAKEN FROM OPEN SOURCES. THE AUTHOR DOES NOT IMPOSE ANY SUBJECTIVE CONCLUSIONS.

Justin Trudeau on his government honouring a Nazi: "I'm very sorry. Not sorry that we did it, I'm sorry that everyone found out."
Asked if he thought it would hurt his chances at re-election, Trudeau said "I got away with doing blackface multiple times, I think I can get away with this too."

The Commission of Inquiry on War Criminals, headed by Justice Jules Deschênes, completed an important report into its investigation on Holocaust war criminals living in Canada in 1986. It was accompanied by an assessment by scholar Alti Rodal, a document that Justice Deschênes said deserved “wide distribution.”
But it’s been 38 years, and we’re still waiting to read Ms. Rodal’s report as well as the full version of the Deschênes report itself. To this day, many Canadian Holocaust-related records and investigations are inaccessible[...]
The U.S. government provides researchers and the public various avenues of access to Holocaust records through its National Archives and the robust Freedom of Information Act, where scholars and others are empowered to access sensitive documents about Nazi war criminals who took refuge in the U.S. No such system exists in Canada, neither through Library and Archives Canada nor via the federal Access to Information Act.[...]
Most governments became aware of the hundreds, if not thousands, of potential war criminals living in their societies in the late 1970s and 80s, and Canada was no different. In response, Canada decided to conduct the Deschênes Commission, an internal two-year investigation tasked with finding out if and how Nazis found refuge in Canada. The final report, which was released publicly with extensive deletions, marked the premature end of investigations into hundreds of war criminals and called for the federal Justice and Immigration departments to take the lead on future prosecution.[...]
The post-Deschênes era has been a failure. The commission asked for 218 individuals to be investigated, and specifically targeted 20 “really bad guys,” as Ms. Rodal recently remarked. The 218 other cases were bad, too – they included gas chamber operators, policemen who shot thousands of Jews and murderers of Jewish children. The Canadian government has charged just four alleged Holocaust perpetrators over four decades, all of whom were acquitted. [...]
The fact that a soldier of the Third Reich was welcomed into the Canadian Parliament, and that there was such shock as to how this could happen, demonstrates how Canada has yet to confront its past relationship with Nazi war criminals in earnest. And perhaps the blanket denial of access to the nation’s own government records and investigations is an underlying cause. In response to the Yaroslav Hunka affair, the federal government has flirted with new disclosures. In October, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau remarked, “There are top public servants looking very carefully into the issue, including digging into the archives. We’re going to make recommendations.” Months have passed – we are still waiting.
