Junichiro lay panting and sweating on the training ground floor, Atsushi’s panting mirroring his own as the tiger boy laid down next to him.

“Hey, Atsushi-san?” Junichiro swallowed thickly as he looked over at the boy, his body aching from gruelling training for their next mission.

“Hm?” Atsushi hummed as he took a sip of his water. Junichiro sat up, his eyes distant.

“when i die… can you write my name for me?” Atsushi looked at the boy with a startled expression, his worry painting panic in his sunset eyes.

“Tanizaki-san!! don’t talk like that man!” Atsushi lightly punched the ginger’s arm. Junichiro gave a solemn smile to the boy as he worried, but leaving it at that as they headed into the dorms to ready for the next mission.

“Tanizaki!! We need you in there!!” Kunikida called over their earpieces, it had only been a few minutes since the mission had started, but it was all hands on deck nonetheless.

“Yessir!!” Junichiro ran in without hesitation, activating Light Snow in a heartbeat, he gave an invisible look towards Atsushi as he ran past where he and his partner had been fighting.

Junichiro sent his snow variant towards his target, even with his variant sneaking to ‘attack’ the target he knew it would be spotted, Junichiro had been hiding with the edges of light snow to strike. “An ability user?~ Oh this will be fun~” a creaky voice rang out through the warehouse as junichiro stilled. he had only had eyes on his target. he felt like an idiot as he scanned for the voice.

Junichiro watched as his clone had been shot from high, a sniper then. how annoying. “Kunikida-San.” Junichiro spoke quietly, sending another varient from the walls of Light Snow.

“Junichiro? have you captured your target?” Junichiro eyed the rafters of the warehouse, looking for the glint of a scope.

“No sir. there’s a Sniper here… i don’t know where from, light snow may not be hiding me.” Junichiro cursed as a bullet nearly struck him as it hit his variant.

“Shit- Junichiro stay there, i’ll be there in a moment.” Junichiro gave an affirmative as he went after his target with a leap, easily knocking out the nearly caught unaware man. It was just then when he had felt a sharp pain in his thigh. Junichiro yelled in pain as he felt it. Activatimg light snow to the maximum output, successfully hiding himself from all angles.

“Kunikida-san, i’ve been shot, looks like it- fuck- Kunikida-san it hit my artery-“ junichiro backed himself into a better view of the entrance.

“Fuck! Yosano-sensei we need you in the warehouse asap!!” Junichiro heard Kunikida’s footsteps draw nearer he only hid them both from above. “Kid?! shit hey i’m here.”

Junichiro held onto kunikida tightly as the blonde man supported his head and held his hand, “Hey Kunikida-san…” Junichiro felt a strong headache come on as he breathed laboriously.

“Idiot! if there is a sniper in a building you leave the building! don’t go and capture the target!!” Kunikida’s voice betrayed him as his voice cracked, his face only painting worry and anxiety.

“but i- i did good right? i got ‘em… just like you taught me.” Junichiro smiled weakly as the pain flared, his face contorting and white knuckle grip tightening.

Kunikida’s face softened as he held Junichiro gently, silent tears rolling down his face. “Yeah… Yeah you did great Junichiro, I couldn’t have asked for a better student.” Junichiro felt his body go cold as the panic set in.

“Kunikida-san… I’m scared.” Junichiro held onto the detective with a dying grasp.

“Hey, Yosano-sensei is going to get here and patch you all up.” Junichiro and kunikida both knew that was a lie, she had been fighting her own target and had been all the way across the fight, she wouldn’t make it in time.

“i don’t wanna go Kunikida-san!! i want to be here with everyone still! someone has to pick up Atsushi-san’s broken pieces!” Junichiro started to cry as it became harder and harder to feel anything, his breathing uneaven, laboured and panicked.

Kunikida gently held Junichiro, his eyes sad. “I know Jun.. i know you’ll make it i promise- stay with me kiddo..”

“I’m cold..” Junichiro shuddered as his heartbeat started to fade, holding onto his mentor’s hands weakly.

It hit them both then, Junichiro wouldn’t make it, Yosano was still too far away. Kunikida held Junichiro tightly.

“Hey Kunikida-san…? Take care of everyone for me okay..?” Junichiro shivered as he started to lose consciousness.

“I promise.” Kunikida Doppo watched as Junichio Tanizaki took his last breath. Kunikida Doppo was unable to save another person. Kunikida Doppo was unable to save the boy he saw as a son.

Three weeks later Junichiro Tanizaki was buried. He was buried as ‘Juriyin Tanizaki.’ there was always an ‘X’ over Juriyin, and a prominent ‘Junichiro’ over it. And tiger fur.

Ah yes, Bungou Stray Dogs.

The wonderful anime filled with brilliant literary references, mystery, crime fighting/crime doing, and...

INCEST?!

I'm sure I'm not the only viewer who was a bit... off-put by these two, to say the least: Junichiro and Naomi Tanizaki, characters who clearly act like lovers despite introducing themselves as siblings.

But are they really?

As mentioned earlier, one of the things that I think makes BSD so great is how they are able to tie in references to the authors lives/works that the characters are based on.

The real Junichiro Tanizaki (author) wrote a novel called Naomi. In this story, a young woman is taken in by/travels with an older man named Joji, and (if I'm remembering correctly) they sometimes claim to be related despite the fact that they are married.

Now, the actual novel does kind of weird me out: Joji is a groomer and Naomi ends up completely dominating his life through fierce manipulation.

BUT in the context of BSD, it does make me feel better about the relationship between Junichiro and Naomi- because thankfully, they are likely not really siblings.

That Thing Is Me

a rant about Atsushi's character

"That thing is me," he says. If that's the case, then that implies he's always had control over Byakko, even if he wasn't aware of it, further exemplified by the fact that Byakko never killed anyone on her rampages and only stole livestock. However, this is also... concerning.

The first scene we see Byakko in full, she immediately tries to kill Dazai. In the second, she tries to kill Ryuu and almost seems to be strategizing- hiding in Junichirou's Light Snow with almost human intelligence, striking from behind and going for the throat. She was aiming to kill.

If Atsushi is Byakko, then what does it say about him as a person that he's so willing to hurt- and even kill- others? Even Atsushi the human has displayed severe lack of concrete morals- seeming inconvenienced by Dazai's suicidal ideations, showing Lucy sympathy, yes, but only in a situation he was in 100% control in- and then immediately threatening her with a fate worse than death should she not agree to his demands, his first response to being faced with a lack of food doing a 180 from 'I'm going to die' to 'I'm going to hurt someone so I don't die.'

Plus, the fact he was so willing to run from the ADA to 'protect' them- and himself by extension, given his assumption the Mafia would be unable to find him- with zero regard for their emotions is cause for further concern. Yes, he cares about people's well-being, but he doesn't seem to understand others' emotions very well.

Possibly even more concerning, he doesn't seem to feel guilt for any of it- after all, those people hurt him first, didn't they? They deserve it, he's only trying to survive in a dog-eat-dog world. All of it was necessary.

I don't think Atsushi is a bad person, absolutely not- he saved Kyouka, he's fighting Amenogozen as we speak, he does his best to keep the people around him safe, he fought off Shibusawa. But I do think he struggles with empathy. Sympathy, he shows in spades. But understanding what others are feeling and genuinely caring is where he struggles.

I feel like a decent chunk of what we see is him either trying not to lose the people that make him feel human, or mimicking the people around him. Byakko is him completely unmasked, Atsushi at his most raw, his most primal, letting himself finally be who he is on the inside and hurt the people that hurt him.

Because in the end, that's what he wants, no?

More Than You Know \\ soukoku

TW ⚠️: topics of depression and suicide. I don't really like writing that kind of stuff so there won't be too many details but these things are mentioned a bit.

-SUMMARY-

Chuuya and Osamu go to Kafka Academy together. Osamu is from a rich family, the Moris, who owns the Yokohama Port Corporation. Chuuya is a scholarship kid from the slums with anger issues. He thinks Osamu is annoying and pretentious and they fight a lot.

Then one day Osamu commits suicide.

Because Kuoyou is Mori's secretary, they attend the funeral where Chuuya receives a CD and a locked notebook, with a clue to the key only Chuuya would know, these objects appaently having been willed to him by Osamu.

After a month Chuuya realises he misses the other boy and that school isn't the same without him. Then as the month ends, he wakes up the week before Osamu commits suicide. Chuuya realises he has seven days to save the boy.

I put Ryuro Hirotsu, Yukichi Fukuzawa, and Ogai Mori in top places because of their age and wealth. They will talk about starting a family soon, maybe trying to be so obvious, like they would see a child no I’m not considering Elise here and have a baby fever, however if you show any kind of discomfort by it they are going stop and have a serious talk about it.

Doppo Kunikida and Sakunosuke Odasaku would totally want some children, in the future or sooner. They would totally wait for you to be ready for starting a family, asking multiple times and having frequently serious talk. While with Oda I can see him being more like “if it happens it happens”, Doppo would have any planned before hand.

Akiko Yosano and Kouyou Ozaki or mommys are going to be very happy to start a family! Maybe they will try a little to convince you to start one, but if you say that you aren’t ready or a simple “no” they will accept it without problems. I think Kyouko is going to be a little more pushy than Yosano thought.

Ranpo Edogawa and Osamu Dazai they are… Uhm… Not really that much interested. For now. It’s not something they ever thought about, like if you brought it up they are going to be surprised. I put them higher only because if you talk about it multiple times or got pregnant, they would probably take their responsibilities and start a family. They only need time.

Motojiro Kaiji and Ango Sagakuchi are very similar to Ranpo and Dazai actually. Neither of them really thought about having a family, but I don’t think they are against the idea of starting one. They simply need time since works come first, and it’s better to have a more normal life style for a child looking at you kaiji.

Chuuya Nakahara and Ichiyou Higuchi would be actually kind of scared and confused to start a family. They are both wealthy enough to take care of children, but they also know that it doesn’t come from a good place, especially for children. I put Higuchi lower simply cause she wonders if she is going to be a good mom, while Chuuya is going to get pretty used to the idea sooner.

Junichirou Tanizaki, Atsushi Nakajima, and Ryunosuke Akutagawa are the ones who only start thinking about family after a long while. I don’t think that the three of them would be ready to have such responsibilities on their shoulder, since they are very young, but I’ll say that Atsushi and Akutagawa are going to be the ones most against starting a family even if older while Junichirou will maybe open up to the idea.

Chapter One: Bloodthrist

Junichirou's Perspective:

My heart pounds violently in my chest, each beat staining my view an even deeper shade of red. This is what I’m meant to do, to save Naomi and the agency. I am afraid of course, of the potential retaliation, what this could mean for my sister in the aftermath, and of course, for the agency. But for the battle to end, this is our only option. In this fight someone will have to lose their life. This is necessary, I will do what is necessary, to save Naomi, and the agency. Let this life put an end to it all.

Just as I plunge the blade down there’s a flash of light and it’s cut in half before it reaches its target. There's a hand around my wrist that feels almost solid but not quite.

“Forgive me, child, if this man dies, the mafia will return to the form I detested so.” It’s a woman’s voice, and its presence fills the whole room, as if somehow amplified.

I turn.

The woman herself matches her voice, commanding cherry red eyes with a sharp gaze held directly on me. She fears nothing, certainly not me. How dare she? To end this war I will make her afraid of me, make everyone here afraid of me and I will end this man’s life and the war for good. I tighten my grip around what’s left of the knife and make myself disappear.

“Visible or not, your bloodthirst is clear to me. I hesitate to wound one of Kyouka’s colleagues but . . .” I swear I hear her sigh, and then there’s a whooshing sound, the room is filled with knives. They cut away the red, leaving only my heartbeat, can she hear it? The room fades in and out, returning to its normal colour with flashes of silver swishing through it. Only one blade but it moves so fast I won’t possibly make it out alive. And she knows it, I can tell.

“There’s no use hiding, Tanizaki-san. I can still hit you, and don’t bother with the window, unless Dazai’s suicide obession has rubbed off on you, that is.” She just stands by her boss’s bed, not bothering to ferret me out, like she knows she’s won.

I start to burn, heat building, out of anger this time, in my chest turning the room red again, but it’s useless. I can’t touch her. I’m useless in this fight now. I need to think.

“You’ll still be useful to us without all your fingers, and I think you would prefer I found you, not my Demon. Wouldn’t you agree?” She has a determined expression, it turns tired when I don’t respond, “I can feel your bloodthirst from here, this is surely getting boring for the both of us. Reveal yourself.”

I do, I don’t know why, but I do.

The anger dissipates into something else as she takes me by the scruff of my shirt neck like I’m some lost kitten and I wonder why she doesn’t restrain me more, but I guess with her gift she assumes I would be too afraid to run. She’s right. 

“Good. Now, let’s talk business.”
