how much should you eat? (the science)
understanding how much to eat and what types of foods to include in your diet is crucial for maintaining health and well-being. it’s all about balance, variety, and moderation. here’s a breakdown:
how much you should eat:
the amount of food you need depends on various factors, including age, gender, activity level, and overall health. the general guideline is to follow the daily caloric intake recommendations. on average:
women: approximately 1,800 to 2,400 calories per day.
men: approximately 2,200 to 3,000 calories per day.
these ranges can vary significantly based on individual needs. notice how it says approximately!! it's important to consult with a healthcare provider or a nutritionist for personalized advice, -or do your own (backed) research for your lifestyle, current weight/height and body type.
types of foods:
fruits and vegetables:
recommendation: aim for at least 5 servings per day.
why: they are rich in vitamins, minerals, and fiber, which are essential for overall health. fiber aids digestion and helps prevent constipation. antioxidants in fruits and vegetables can reduce the risk of chronic diseases.
whole grains:
recommendation: make at least half your grain intake whole grains.
why: whole grains like brown rice, oats, and whole wheat provide more nutrients than refined grains. they contain fiber, which helps regulate blood sugar levels and promotes digestive health. they also provide essential nutrients like b vitamins, iron, and magnesium.
protein:
recommendation: include lean protein in every meal.
why: protein is vital for building and repairing tissues, producing enzymes and hormones, and supporting immune function. sources include lean meats, poultry, fish, beans, lentils, tofu, nuts, and seeds.
dairy or dairy alternatives:
recommendation: aim for 3 servings per day.
why: dairy products and fortified alternatives provide calcium, vitamin d, and protein, essential for bone health. choose low-fat or fat-free options to reduce saturated fat intake.
fats:
recommendation: consume healthy fats in moderation.
why: healthy fats, such as those found in avocados, nuts, seeds, and olive oil, are important for brain health, hormone production, and absorption of fat-soluble vitamins. avoid trans fats and limit saturated fats.
the science behind it:
energy balance: the concept of energy balance is central to weight management. if you consume more calories than you burn, your body stores the excess energy as fat. if you consume fewer calories than you burn, you lose weight.
macronutrients: carbohydrates, proteins, and fats are the three macronutrients that provide energy (calories). each plays a different role in the body:
carbohydrates are the body’s primary source of energy. they should make up 45-65% of your daily calorie intake.
proteins are crucial for tissue repair and immune function. they should constitute 10-35% of your daily calories.
fats are essential for brain health and energy storage. they should account for 20-35% of your daily calories.
micronutrients: vitamins and minerals are micronutrients needed in smaller amounts but are vital for numerous bodily functions, including energy production, immune function, and bone health.
personalized approach:
everyone’s nutritional needs are different, and what works for one person might not work for another. it’s essential to consider your lifestyle, health conditions, culture, and personal preferences when planning your diet. consulting a healthcare provider or a registered dietitian can provide personalized guidance tailored to your specific needs.
remember, a balanced diet not only supports physical health but also enhances mental well-being, energy levels, and overall quality of life. happy eating!

🎀30 Day Glow Up Challenge🎀 - day fourteen
♡ Mindset : when I go out with my friends I detach from my phone for the day which is the best. While I made me way to Joe & The Juice I read a book called “Survival Of The Prettiest” it talks about beauty and the beauty industry. I love reading it definitely helps me pass the time when I’m commuting through out manhattan.
♡ Health : my friend and I have the same glow up goals and we love everything health and wellness and we discussed our goals and what we can do this summer together to help us reach our fitness goals. I live a 80/20 lifestyle so I try my best to not follow my usual meal plan when I’m going out with my friends or by myself. But I do extra walking and when you’re in manhattan you will walk alotttt. My friend and I walked so much purposely so we can get extra steps in. I hit over 10K steps.
♡ Self Care : I got a massage today at Chelsea Wellness it was soooo goodddd. I got the heated oil and hot stones treatment my body felt so relaxed after. While the lady massaged me I practiced my breathing that helps with cortisol and stimulates the Vega nerve I believe don’t quote me lol.
♡ Experience : I explored the city today which was so much fun especially doing it with my friend. Having a social life has definitely helped me through my glow up journey especially having friends on that same journey lol. I had Joe & The Juice I got the blueberry matcha chai latte so good a 8/10 and my friend gave me a piece of her Tunacado sandwich it was good 7/10. We went to Bubby’s Bakery after which was nice. The environment is very relaxed and homey. I got the Mac and cheese 9/10 so goodddd and I got the salmon bagel 6/10 it was good but the bagel was toooo hard. I couldn’t finish all my food so I brought left overs home for my siblings. Today was amazing 10/10 day.
Tell me how you’re doing babes I would love to know my inbox and requests are open<33333

I'm done being moderate, I'm done being the person i was when 2024 starts , it's embarrassing I know ... it's not for the show but ..still embarrassing to myself too that i haven't changed it's not that I haven't done challenging things ...in the whole 2024 but ... I'm that satisfied or maybe I'll never be ....but still ..i don't want 2025 to go the same.. i don't want to come out of 2025 and be thinking I could have done better , i could have been more than what I'm...no because this way ......one day i would be on my death bed ... And still be thinking I could have done that . that ....etc ...you know that drill . But the point is life is short , i know it's so talkative or the most boring line to say ..but it's what it is. There was a time when we were in 2020 and now suddenly it's 2025 where all those years in between go .... Have i done the most challenging thing I said to me to do.... Have I ???? I'm not criticizing myself... I'm being aware of what the hell has happened. In those all years and I'm still that person, but my Higher self , my own self , my inner critic know i could be more of what I'm..... And I'm done ... I have deleted all the social media apps which were distracting me in the smallest possible way ...my social media usage never exceeds 1.5 hrs ...but still . Not even the smallest possible distraction.... I know I would be bored... But boring means I'm getting better ..... So I'm going to start a challenge from today , it's sem break and I have 10 days left to my 2nd sem to start and I have them whole 2nd sem but still I'm going to start bygones bygones .... 2025 will tolerate the new me ....new version of my body , my personality, my future , my face , my body language, my speaking, my actions, my words , my behaviour, my confidence.
So hey , I'm the Ist year CSE major college student and I'm going to document my life with the people I never met but we are all going through the same phase , same challenges and we need each other on this journey to survive 2025 in the best possible way and I'm sure we are going to come out of 2025 with the shine on our face which we have never imagined to be there .

The last empress
Tumblr media
And here is Maria of Trebizond (c.1404-1439) the last crowned Byzantine empress and wife of the penultimate emperorJohn VIII Palaiologos (and one of my favorite empresses).
I based my drawing on Bertrandon de la Broquière's account:
"He then placed the coat over her shoulders and put one of the long, pointed hats of Greece which bears along the said top three golden feathers and which fitted her very well. She seemed to me as beautiful as before. (…) She wore make up, which was unnecessary because she was young and fair-skinned. In each ear she had a hanging earring, large and flat bearing several stones, mostly rubies."
Maria was an active woman who often went hunting with her husband or alone. She rode her horse astride, something that fascinated the foreign visitors. I can't know for sure how she hunted. I chose to give her a bow as an allusion to Pisanello's depiction of her husband. Since her life was marked by many difficult events, I chose to depict her in a happy moment.
Maria was John's third wife, but also the only one that he had personally chosen (his first marriages had been marriages in name only). Her relationship with her husband was by all accounts a happy one, marked by love and respect.
The Ecthesis Chronica tells us that John loved her "beyond measure" because of her beauty and wisdom. He also valued her advice. Due to the Empire's dire situation, John left for Italy in 1438 in the hope of concluding an ecclesiastical union with the Catholic Church and thus obtaining western military aid.
Maria and her mother-in-law Helena Dragaš  likely governed the capital in his absence. Maria didn't live to see her husband come back. She became ill, an event reportedly foretold by the appearance of a comet in the sky, and died on December 17, 1439.
John's entourage learned about her death during the return journey. They hid it to the emperor, fearing that his grief would delay their journey further. It was only when John returned to the capital that his mother told him the truth.
The emperor fell into a deep depression and was later buried in Maria's tomb after his death in 1448.
