Documents I've been watching. . .

Documentaries are windows to the world through the eyes of those that live it. Here are some of the documentaries I've seen these past months that have impacted me.

Kid 90

Soleil Moon Frye made this documentary about her growing up in the 80s and 90s. It is a documentary that touched my heart because I grew up watching these people on screen. The journey they all went through in their teens, the friendships, the loved ones lost. . . It felt raw, honest, and real.

Val

I liked Val Kilmer and his work as an actor. He was very popular in the 90s, but then at some point, I stopped seeing him in movies. My brother told me to watch the documentary and so I did. Val Kilmer is a fighter and I really hope that he heals and is able to finish the work he started as an actor and writer. It was very enlightening to see his career from his point of view.

Bob Ross: Happy Accidents, Betrayal & Greed

I used to watch Bob Ross on TV painting those beautiful landscapes. His soothing voice, the joy he projected on the screen as he shared his talent with the world, was something else; but I never knew he was so famous among aspiring painters. This documentary takes us into his life and it was something else. To see his son, and some close friends tell his story . . . I must say that greed is one of the worst evils in human nature. He was a good man and a good father, but he just made business with really nasty people. Copyright was supposed to protect creators and it is cases like these, where creators and their families who are in the lose end that really makes me think that government needs to rethink who are they helping with this law and its amendments. Are they really helping creators or are they just helping the big companies that eat those artists and leave them with nothing, not eve their names.

Three Identical Strangers

I heard about this documentary at a Cultura Geek episode (this is a really cool group I follow in YouTube). Anyway, I heard about it and it intrigued me, so I watched it. And as I heard about their story, I kept thinking this must be one of the reasons why now - when you want to do an academic study of human beings - you have to submit so much documentation that evidences that permissions were given and that participants know what they are getting into. It is really amazing and sad.
