Vincent Price’s name has popped up many times as I’ve researched candidates for the GayIcons blog. And although his mannerism became more effeminate as he grew older, I never found a specific reference to him being gay.

That is, until came across an article by Price’s daughter, Victoria, who is a lesbian. She discussed her father’s inclusion in Scotty Bower’s “expose” of Hollywood homosexuals (he’s that Gas Station pimp). In it, Bower claimed that on Price’s wedding night to Coral Brown, third wife, in 1974, Price was busy having sex with a man in one room while she was having sex with a woman in another.

Victoria objected to some factual errors but also because both Price and Brown were devote Catholics and it would have been unlikely they would have behaved that way on the wedding night. But more importantly she objected to her father being labeled as “gay”.

“My dad may have had sex with men, but no one had any clue what that meant. Without knowing that, how could anyone call my dad anything? Gay... is not just about who you sleep with or even who you love — it’s what love and sex and partnership and commitment come together to mean in your life.”

She added:

“I didn’t know whether my dad was gay or bisexual, what I did know was that he was the most loving and open-hearted and accepting father to me, when I came out to him in the 1980s.”

My personal favorite of Vincent Price roles are:

Shelby Carpenter - the gigolo in the terrific noir “Laura” (1944)

Egghead - the Eggcelent villain in seven episodes of Batman (1966-1967)

Anton Phibes - the diabolical serial killer in “The Abominable Dr. Phibes” (1972) and its sequel the following year

Edward Lionheart - the Shakespeare inspired murderer in “Theater of Blood” (1973)
