Noonday Sun – Lunar Maria (2024)
Tumblr media
Yari looks at Noonday Sun, a recent album from Florianópolis, Brazil based instrumental electronic/trip hop/alternative/chillwave/drum n bass project Noonday Sun, released 3 September 2024.
An alien-looking figure on the album art and a HG Wells quote in their bio tells me everything I need to know – that this is going to be spacey synth that’s in some ways reminiscent of the early days of Giorgio Moroder releases, and Alan Parsons voyages. Although, with the trip hop-like beats on some tracks, or the apparent synthwave influences in tracks like Mare Ingenii, this is still a very modern release.

Akae Beka – Living Testament (2024)
Tumblr media
Yari looks at Living Testament, the final album recorded by Saint Croix, Virgin Islands based reggae legend Akae Beka, released February 17th on Go A Chant Productions, I-Roots Records and Trinity Farms Music.
One thing that’s always great about reggae made by an old school rasta legend like this is that there’s almost always one hell of an uplifting vibe. You know that after listening to Living Testament you’re going to come away feeling better about the world, even with all its problems. Akae Beka is here to guide you through some of the dread that can sometimes feel all-encompassing, but he’ll take you by the hand and help you get through it in the most chilled out, uplifting way possible.

Nxxses – Antimatter (2024)
Yari looks at Antimatter, the new EP from Southern trap metal/hip hop artist Nxxses, released October 26th.
You can tell that Nxxses has his influences in experimental metal and black metal, but of course, this is still hip hop. And while it’s dark and gloomy, it’s also intense, and being Nxxses there’s an omnipresent sort of aggression here. But it’s taken up to another level, and with bars about blowing people’s heads off and dragging ‘em kicking and screaming, there’s a horrorcore intensity here.

Ancient Astronauts – Cypher Kabaka (2024)
Tumblr media
Yari looks at Cypher Kabaka, the collaborative album between German hip hop group Ancient Astronauts and Ugandan artist collective BA Cypher Kabaka, released June 27th, 2024, on Switchstance Recordings.
This latest release by Ancient Astronauts, a hip hop group from Germany, is a collab with BA Cypher Kabaka, a diverse collective of MCs, graffiti artists, DJs and breakdancers representing a variety of indigenous cultures of Uganda. The mic skills on display here are excellent, and across the album each MC brings something a little different to the table. Ancient Astronauts have knocked it out of the park with this album, and I know I’ll be continuing to listen to this one well into the future. Writing a 20 minute song is an audacious undertaking, and using said song to open your newest album is a bold move, but one that works out perfectly for the newest Bog Wizard album, Journey Through The Dying Lands. Keep reading to find out why.

Deceased – Children of the Morgue (2024)
Tumblr media
Our final republication from Dovendyr - Heavy Metal Historian looks at Children of the Morgue, the new album from Virginian thrash death veterans Deceased, released August 30th on HELLS HEADBANGERS.
What do you get when you blend death metal with thrash metal, and add some Iron Maiden-esque storytelling? You get Arlington, VA’s Deceased. Deceased crafted their style of death metal and have further refined it with many great releases over damn near 40 years in underground music. For my final review, I look at Deceased’s latest full-length release, “Children of the Morgue” – their first since the release of “Ghostly White” seven years ago! (Just a heads up, this is quite a long review!)
