My thoughts on the news about The Long Walk's film adaption
I have very little faith that The Long Walk will be a good adaption but maybe I'll be wrong! I can dream, and I've been wrong before. Here are my thoughts on the casting announcements and set pictures.
Cooper Hoffman and David Jonsson are the leads, according to Deadline, which means they're presumably Garraty and McVries. Jonsson seems like a good actor but an awful fit for either character, and with Hoffman (presumably Garraty) it comes down to how good an actor he is, I guess, because I can see it working if I squint but I haven't seen anything from Hoffman to suggest he can do Garraty. And I reaaaaally doubt he could do McVries. McVries has a bite to him.
Joshua Odjick is Native American so he's presumably Joe or Mike (not to say that a different character couldn't theoretically be Native American in the adaption, but it's key to Joe and Mike that none of the other Walkers understand their culture at all, and only Baker defends their parents). It's odd that either of those two would have a prominent enough role to be cast already, so I wonder if either one of their roles is beefed up, or if Mike and Scramm will be a composite character and Joe won't feature at all. Alternatively, Odjick isn't playing a Native American character (or he is but Mike and Joe are adapted out), in which case I'd guess Parker.
Roman Griffin Davis is someone I've only ever seen in Jojo Rabbit so I don't know how much range he has. I think he'd fit best as Barkovitch but I wouldn't be surprised if he's been cast as Baker or Olson.
Charlie Plummer is Stebbins. I say this almost entirely because he's a long-haired blonde. If McVries is black then book descriptions (and characterizations, let's be honest, you can't make McVries a black kid in the 70s and keep his character the same) are thrown out the door already, but google Charlie Plummer and tell me he's not been cast as Stebbins. Also, take a look at this.
Ben Wang is Asian American and there are no explicitly Asian American characters, so we've gotta guess this one purely on Vibes (Olson and Barkovitch could both be canonically Asian American, but Barkovitch is openly racist, so). From Wang's YouTube channel and some clips of Chinese Born American I found, he's a nice and playful guy (hmu Ben let's get a lemonade, also tell me who you're playing), so I'd assume Baker or Olson or Abraham because they fit that the closest, I guess? But this is unfortunately a flawed way of guessing because actors playing lunatics are sometimes normal people in real life, walking among us, going almost undetected.
Tut Nyuot's a young, sweet-looking kid. I'd assume Percy? Again, weird to cast Percy already because he doesn't even have any lines in the book, but I can't imagine Nyuout playing a character who's supposed to be the same age as Charlie Plummer's character. Maybe he's unexpectedly good at playing deranged assholes like Barkovitch? We'll see.
For Garrett Wareing I'd say Olson, looking through clips and interviews.
Jordan Gonzalez gives me no strong impression. Sorry, Jordan. Feel free to give me a stronger one over lemonade (and tell me who you're playing). If I'm held at gunpoint then I'll say Abraham.
Mark Hamill is presumably playing the Major. He's absolutely not who I would have picked because he overflows with character and I always pictured the Major as a stoic, empty Big Brother type figure, whose moments of charisma and friendliness were obviously just an act. And I guess Hamill could play that, but I think the Major will more likely have a lot more personality and vim and vigor in the movie, if Hamill was cast - he's easily the biggest draw in the cast. Not necessarily a bad way to portray the Major, but easier to mess up. We'll wait and see.
Judy Greer as presumably Mrs. Garraty will presumably be fine.
Set photos look promising, aesthetically. No half-track, though. And there's a tank. Why is there a tank?
There's a Deadline article suggesting that there are only 50 kids and the pace limit is 3mph. But there's also an article suggesting it's still 100 kids so it might be a mistake? If it's 50 kids then that's presumably done for practicality but it's a bad change, the number will either get too low too fast or it'll drop too slowly (and also no 47 and 61 which would be weird but that's not significant). 3mph isn't necessarily bad, it's more feasible, but it does mean the "first into Massachusetts in seventeen years" can't happen. Maybe they'll make New Hampshire the record instead.
i want lemonade
Reblog with your thoughts! We've got news, people, and I'm sure someone somewhere is more excited about that than I am. Let's get some discussion going on in here.

Wilbur Ware: The Bass Virtuoso Who Defined a Jazz Era
Introduction: Wilbur Ware was one of the most remarkable jazz bassists of his time. Though often understated in the history of jazz, his contributions to the genre have left a lasting impact on generations of musicians and listeners. Known for his unconventional playing style, rhythmic innovations, and the deep, resonant sound he coaxed from his instrument, Ware was a true original who left his…

Eroticism and Early Britpunk Fashion
Recently I read an interesting post about rockstars, a once ubiquitous sub-category of celebrity that's currently fallen to the cultural wayside, and how eroticism is often an integral component of their public images.
And that got me thinking about early (as in 1976-1978) Britpunk's relationship to eroticism and sex. So here's a silly, rather disorganized write up I did on how sexual Britpunk fashion is and why I think that appealed to certain people.
Unlike many youth subcultures, Britpunk- which, for those who don't know, is the British version of the punk subculture- tended towards asexual puritanism. Both as a reaction to the free love movement of the hippies that Britpunk characterized itself as being inherently in opposition to in both behavior and values, and as an extension of the theory put forward by Greil Marcus about punks being the spiritual successors to medieval heretics who considered the material world to be wholly corrupt- including and especially carnal pleasures such as sex.
Viv Albertine notes in her autobiography that in Britpunk culture sex was treated as a commodity, no emotional attachment needed. Johnny Rotten, the main figurehead of the punk movement at the time, once famously called sex 'five minutes of squelching sounds' and his deep disgust for anything sexual did a lot to shape the subculture's negative perception of sex. There are barely any Britpunk songs from the era that portray romance as something positive and even less that discuss sex in any way at all.
So isn't it a bit odd that Britpunk fashion is so sexual? Because it is very sexual.
A lot of original Britpunk fashion is appropriated fetish gear. Bondage suits, leather, collars, and latex. SEX/Seditionaries, Malcolm McLaren and Vivienne Westwood's boutique that basically single-handedly created the iconic look of early Britpunk, carried all of this along with t-shirts with sexual images- such as a pair of women's breasts or the word 'perv' spelled out in chicken bones- or actual porn on them- such as drawings of cowboys touching tips or Snow White having a gang bang with the Seven Dwarfs. The London Leatherman, who got his start in the gay leather scene, made leather clothes and accessories for bands like the Sex Pistols and The Clash and The Slits while allowing McLaren and Westwood to sell his wares in their store. Ripped clothes that showed off the chest and chains as an accessory were also common. Because of this the average punker in London was decked out in clothes that wouldn't look out of place in a sex club.
Let's take a look at some examples.
(Johnny Rotten of the Sex Pistols wearing a handcuff around his wrist and a t-shirt with a drawing of gay cowboys that resembles Tom of Finland's work on it.)
(Paul Simonon of The Clash wearing a shirt that says 'everyone's a prostitute' and has two scantily clad women on it.)
(Siouxsie Sioux wearing a t-shirt with a pair of women's breasts on it.)
(Soo Catwoman wearing a spiked collar with a chain around her neck.)
(Various members of the Bromley Contingent, including actual dominatrix Linda, wearing various erotic clothing items such as a see through dress, collars, and leather shorts.)
(Jordan and Vivienne Westwood wearing full bondage suits.)
(Sid Vicious of the Sex Pistols wearing a ripped version of the gay cowboys shirt that intentionally exposes his naval and nipple.)
(Adam Ant wearing a leather t-shirt.)
(Paul Simonon of The Clash wearing a leather jacket, leather trousers, and a spiked leather wristband while exposing his bare chest.)
(Alan Jones wearing a shirt that says 'perv' on it and Chrissie Hynde wearing a latex or leather top while another woman wears a latex or leather dress.)
So if Britpunk was so anti-sex, why play with such erotic imagery?
For Vivienne Westwood and Malcolm McLaren, fashion was and art form that was all about bringing the taboos of the repressed British culture out from the shadows, including and especially the aesthetics of sex. They wanted to shock people out of their complacency and liberate young people. What better way to do that then to turn something as incredibly taboo as fetishes primarily associated with gay men (latex, leather, and bondage) into the hot new couture? But neither Westwood nor McLaren were actually interested in sex (especially not with each other despite having a child together) and were content to simply explore it in an artistic and emotionally distant way. Their clothes are sexual but they aren't sexy. The eroticism exists primarily to make a point, not to tantalize.
Westwood about SEX/Seditionaries' clothes: "We’re here to convert, liberate and educate. We want to inspire people to have the confidence to live out their fantasies and change. What we’re really making is a political statement with our shop by attempting to attack the system."
But why wear these clothes? Obviously teenagers and young adults love the idea of doing (and wearing) taboo things that piss off their parents and other boring old farts. Obviously fans of the Sex Pistols, The Clash, and other punk bands wanted to dress like their idols and set themselves apart from the average citizen. But why else did punkers- in particular young female punkers- latch on so heavily to such risque fashion?
Well, to steal one of the few good lines from Danny Boyle's Pistol, when you dress like that you get a lot of funny looks but no wolf whistles.
If you've spent enough time online, you may be familiar with the concept of danger hair. If not, it basically means that if a young woman has brightly colored dyed hair then she's crazy and you shouldn't bother hitting on her. Kind of like how a poison dart frog is brightly colored to let birds know that it's deathly poisonous and they shouldn't bother eating it. Obviously this phrase is misogynistic but it does have a kernel of truth to it. Throughout history certain women have chosen to dress in ways that are intentionally unappealing to the majority of men in order to ward off unwanted advances.
Britpunk fashion on women was, despite how sexual it was, deeply unappealing to men. Legs McNeil, co-founder of PUNK magazine, talked extensively about how vile he found punk girls who dressed in the Britpunk style, how sexually unappealing they were to him. Little did he know, that's why those girls were dressing like that in the first place.
Back in the 1970s, the Britpunk style was beyond shocking to the majority of people. If you were a teenage girl or young woman who didn't want anyone to catcall you or make random passes at you while you were out on the town, decking yourself out in the latest clothes from SEX was a great way to get most men off your back. Instead of danger hair, it was danger clothes. Just because you were dressed in a sexual way didn't mean you were dressed sexy- at least in the opinion of the average man at the time.
Unfortunately though you'd just be trading in one form of violence for another as it was common for members of other youth subcultures to brutally attack punks who wandered the streets alone.
These days though everyone wants a punk girlfriend. Too bad they won't be getting one!

TODAY'S FROZEN MOMENT - Today marks the 65th Anniversary of this phenomenal photo - August 12th, 1958 - this now-famous photo was taken… later to be given the title "A Great Day in Harlem" when it was published in Esquire magazine. Art Kane, an art director for the magazine, was finally allowed to do a photo assignment... A jazz lover, Kane said he wanted to assemble the best in jazz for a shot, at 10 in the morning... Most people laughed at him...but...somehow he pulled this off; they showed up...as requested, to 17 East 126th Street...astonishing really... Subsequently, a documentary about the photo added to the magic... as did the allowance of the neighbors, the kids in the front and the folks in the windows… just so special… See below for a list of who's who... of the 57 musicians here, only 2 remain: Sonny Rollins and Benny Golson... but the shot, like all of the music, is eternal…

Crossed Paths (Pt.2)
Farleigh Start x black!fem!oc
Author’s note: I’m on a role tonight. This is gonna be a friends-to-lover kind of story. I guess Farleigh's personality is kind of a head cannon, but we know he is a dick head and he still is, but not to Jordan. Just cute, playful banter. I can't wait to keep writing more.
Part 1 Part 2 Part 3 Part 4
1133 words
Crossed Paths
Does the fit give rich, posh English major whose school is paid for by daddy’s money? Jordan thinks to herself as she’s admiring herself in the mirror. She woke up extra early today to make sure everything looked good. Jordan took the time to do her makeup and even set out an outfit the night before. The weather will be pretty chilly, but “A hoe never gets cold,” as her mother would say, so Jordan decided to wear a skirt today. She looks down at her watch. Only 8:30. I still have time to grab something quick to eat and drink. She grabs her school bag and keys and exits the door.
Jordan comes across a quaint cafe and decides to go inside. She notices there’s a line, so she decides to wait. As she takes a look at the menu, she feels a presence standing behind her. She turns around to see Farleigh standing in line as well.
“Look who’s trying to fit into the Oxford aesthetic,” Farleigh remarks with a sly grin.
Jordan looks down at her outfit, “I- Well,” Farleigh laughs, “I’m just messing with you. Your outfit is cute,” he turns to look at the menu, “What are you getting?”
Jordan laughs, “I think it’s only customary to try the tea that the British lose their minds over. And a scone as well.”
The line continues to move until she and Farleigh are at the counter.
“Hi, can I get-” Jordan starts, “Can we get two teas with milk and a vanilla scone?” Farleigh continues. Jordan stares at Fareligh in disbelief, “So you’re paying?” She asks. “Of course, it’s the gentlemanly thing to do,” he responds.
Oh, so he got money?
“I suppose so.” Jordan smiles.
xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
Farleigh and Jordan walk out of the cafe towards campus.
“How does it taste, Jordy?”
“Oh, so it’s Jordy now,” Jordan laughs softly, “and it tastes fine, nothing like sweet tea, though, which is ten times better. The scone is delicious, though.”
“I never asked, but what are you studying?” Farleigh asks. “I’m actually studying English,” Jordan responds. “No way! Me too. What's your first class today?” Farleigh persists. “I’m gonna be honest. I only know the professor and room number. It’s Professor Ware, if I’m not mistaken-”
“I have Professor Ware, too,” Farleigh continues
“In room 220?” Jordan questions.
“Yeah,” Farleigh confirms. “Oh, thank god. I thought I was gonna be alone,” Jordan says. She felt like a weight had been lifted off her shoulders. “You’re never gonna be alone. You got me, Felix, and Venetia,” Farleigh checks his watch, “Oh shit, we’re gonna be late. We gotta walk faster.” He teasingly walks ahead of Jordan.
“Wait for me. I got short legs!” Jordan rushes after him, laughing. As they pick up the pace, the laughter continues. Maybe Oxford won’t be so bad.
xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
They finally make it to the room. Is this the professor’s office? Before Jordan even had a chance to question it, Farleigh grabbed her wrist and rushed them into the room. Jordan hurriedly sits in one of the chairs while Farleigh throws himself on an armchair.
“I’m so sorry. Sorry, I’m late. Sorry, I’m late. We got completely lost.” Farleigh hurriedly explains.
“Yes, so sorry, Professor.” Jordan apologies as well.
“Hi, nice to meet you,” Fareligh says to the other boy in the room. I did not notice him at all. Farleigh turns back to Professor Ware, “I’m sorry.”
“You’re Farleigh Start and Jordan Williams, I take it?” The professor asks, “Nice of you to join us, finally.” The professor focuses on Farleigh, “You’re not a relation of Frederica Start by any chance?”
Farleigh nods, “Yeah, she’s my mother.” The professor breaks out into a grin, almost like he’s reminiscing.
“I knew her when I was your age. We were both here! When she was still Frederica Catton. Before she went to America. Farleigh, in a mocking tone, exclaims, “No way! Oh, my god. I’ll tell her. She’s going to be thrilled I’m being tutored by one of her friends!”
Ware shrinks down, “Oh no, Not really friends. More of an admirer…from afar. We didn’t even speak. No need to mention me.”
Jordan snorts and quickly tries to hide it. Farleigh smiles charmingly and looks at the professor, “Shall we start?”
xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
Jordan is staring absently out the window as the boy she now knows is Oliver is reading his essay. He said ‘thus’ like 8 times already.
“And thus the shape of the verse can be said, like Browing’s ‘Last Duchess,’ to look as it were alive.”
Finally, he’s done.
There’s an uncomfortable silence as they wait for the professor to respond. Ware finally shifts his gaze to the group, “ Okay, yeah. That was very good. A lot of food for thought there. Intriguing.”
Farleigh chuckles, “Thus.” Jordan quickly glances at him. So he noticed it, too.
Oliver sharply asks, “Hmm?”
“Sorry, just ‘thus’. It’s just a funny word.” The air feels thicker in the room.
“Why,” Oliver asks.
“I don't know. I don't think we really use it that much in real life, do we? It’s kind of verbose,” Farleigh looks Oliver in the eyes mischievously, “don't you think?”
“No. Not really,” Oliver quips
Jordan interrupts bluntly, “You used it eight times.”
Oliver visibly reddens, “No, I didn’t.”
Farleigh and Oliver continue to debate while Jordan’s mind continues to wander. In the next session, I’ll have to bring my own essay. She finally comes to when she hears Oliver sarcastically remark, “Look forward to hearing your essay!”
xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
“I didn’t know that we had to bring our own essay. This is so embarrassing,” Jordan complains as she and Farleigh walk back to her apartment. “It’s not a big deal; the professor said it was fine anyway, seeing as you’re an exchange student. Just bring it next time.” Farleig explains calmly.
“I guess you’re right,” Jordan pauses, “That Oliver guy is kind of odd, yeah?”
“Yeah, and annoying as shit,” Farleigh confirms while rolling his eyes. “Anyways, are you doing anything later, at like 5 o’clock?” Farleigh asks.
“No, I’m not actually. Why, you just can’t get enough of me?” Jordan quips.
Farleigh raises an eyebrow, smirking slightly, “Um, don't get ahead of yourself, but Felix and Venetia wanted to know if you wanted to join us at the bar.”
“Don’t act like you don’t like me, and yes, I do want to join y’all at the bar. Come get me at 5, okay?” Jordan replies as they stop in front of her door, “Thanks for walking back with me, I’ll see you in three hours?” Jordan walks in and turns around to wave at Farleigh. He waits until he can’t see her anymore before walking away, letting out an audible groan. She’s got me.

"In the late 6th century, a new monotheistic religion called Islam was founded by its prophet Muhammad, whose followers became known as Muslims. Muhammad united the tribes of Arabia into a religious polity, a caliphate, whose domains he and his successors extended into a vast empire through holy war (jihad).[296][ci] They conquered Palestine in 636 to 640.[247][cii][ciii]
Society in the caliphate formed a pyramid with five layers.[297] Arabs were at the top, followed by converts to Islam (mawali) (this distinction disappeared after the Abbasids seized power).[297] Below them stood dhimmis, followed by non-Muslim free men and slaves at the bottom.[297] The dhimmi (meaning "protected person") were Christians, Jews, and Samaritans, who the Muslims designated as "peoples of the Book" (ahl al-kitab), meaning that they, like the Muslims, based their worship on a book God had given to them, which, in its essence, was identical to the Koran.[298] Unlike the previous rulers, the Muslims allowed them to practice their religions in peace. However, non-Muslim men had to pay a special tax (jizya) and they had to be submissive to Muslims.[298][civ] Dress regulations were imposed on non-Muslims, but it is uncertain whether they were ever enforced in Palestine.[299][cv] Muslim men were permitted to marry non-Muslim women even if the latter choose to remain in their faith. Muslim women, however, could not marry non-Muslim men, unless they first converted to Islam.[300][cvi] The Muslims also lifted the Romans' centuries-long ban on Jews in Jerusalem.[301]
The Muslims organized the territory of the Byzantine Dioceses Orientes (Syria) into five military districts, or provinces (jund, pl. ajnad).[302][cvii][cviii] The territory of Palaestina Prima and Palaestina Tertia became Jund Filastin and stretched from Aqaba in the south to the lower Galilee in the north and from Arish in the west to Jericho in the east.[303][cix] The Tulunids later expanded the borders of the province eastwards and southwards to include regions in modern-day southern Jordan and north-western Saudi Arabia.[304][cx] The newly founded city Ramla became Jund Filastin's administrative capital and most important city.[305] Jund al-Urdunn corresponded with Palaestina Secunda, covering most of the Galilee, the western part of Peraea in Transjordan, and the coastal cities Acre and Sur (Tyre).[306] Tabariyyah (Tiberias) replaced Scythopolis as the province's capital.[307]
Throughout the period, Palestine was a sort of gold mine for the caliphate and among its most prosperous and fertile provinces.[308] Palestine's wealth derived from its strategic location as a hub for international trade, the influx of pilgrims, its excellent agricultural produce, and from a number of local crafts.[309] Products manufactured or traded in Palestine included building materials from marble and white-stone quarries, spices, soaps, olive oil, sugar, indigo, Dead Sea salts, and silk.[310] Palestinian Jews were expert glassmakers whose wares became known as "Jewish glass" in Europe.[311] Palestine was also known for its book production and scribal work.[312]
The Muslims invested much effort in developing a fleet and in restoring seaports, creating shipyards, fortifying coastal cities, and in establishing naval bases in Palestine.[313] Acre became their chief naval base from which a fleet set out to conquer Cyprus in 647.[314] Jaffa came to replace Caesarea as Palestine's main port due to its proximity with Ramla.[315]
Though Palestine was now under Muslim control, the Christian world's affection for the Holy Land continued to grow. Christian kings made generous donations to Jerusalem's holy sites,[cxi] and helped facilitate the ever increasing pilgrimage traffic.[317][cxii] Pilgrims ventured for the adventure, but also to expiate sin.[319][cxiii] Many pilgrims were attacked by highwaymen which would later be cited by the Crusaders as a reason to "liberate" Jerusalem from the Muslims.[320]"

MAG 187 Relisten
Activity on my first listen: taking a bath.
Lol, that elevator music xD
HELEN: "So, where’s the old ball and chain?" Fucking Helen... Always talking about others in a degrading way... Also typical narcissistic behavior, pushing others down in order to feel like they’re better.
JON: "You hoped that by nudging us past his domain, Martin would still be there when I arrived… so I would have to pass through on my own. Apparently, you were right." HELEN: "I thought you said you weren’t going to look inside people’s heads?" JON: "I thought you said you weren’t people." HELEN: "Touché." JON: "Well, for what it’s worth, I have tried not to look inside you." By now Jon has seen enough of the Distortion's behavior as Helen, it has become easy to predict what she's up to.
HELEN: "… He’s still so new to all of this, caught up in ideas of justice and ‘solving’ things. Sure, he can wave away the theoretical idea of people suffering…" JON: "But if he sees it up close, he might try to get his boyfriend to smite you?" I feel like Jon likes the sound of that. His boyfriend.
JON: "I’m trying to ‘know’ if there’s another route I can take." HELEN: "And?" JON: "Turns out there is, actually. But it is rather full of spiders." Coincident? I think not!!! The Web wants Jon to pass on the Fears.
HELEN: "The tape recorder feels more, um… awake." Hmmm, I wonder in what sense... The tape recorders have already been very actively clicking themselves on (or appearing at all) in S4. Is it just because the Web is now in this world instead of lurking at the edges?
HELEN: "Even though I saved you from Michael." The Distortion saved itself from Michael. Suddenly putting itself clearly on the side of "I am not your friend" is not what the Distortion is about. Besides, if it had killed Jon, the "Wonderland" of an Eyepocalyse, which is oh so loved by the Distortion, would have been delayed.
JON: "I liked Helen." HELEN: "I am Helen." JON: "The real one." It is consistent for his character, but I find it funny that Jon seems to bond with people rather quickly. He knew Helen for 20 minutes. He knew Jordan for 20 minutes.
JON: "True. But as you’ll recall, I was pretty paranoid myself at that point." HELEN: "So what? You saw yourself in her? A sad reflection? A possible future?" Hmmm, maybe it's the same with Jordan. He bonded with him over his experience with the Corruption.
HELEN: "Oh, Jon! This existence can be wonderful, if you just let it." JON: [Sadly] "I know." :( He could just give up. Resign himself to his role as Archivist... Reminds me of working in retail, for example. Other people get sent to ware house duty because they're too rude be around customers. While I have to do the dirty work with customers because I care too much about not being an asshole. Or like working in a team with the same pool of work load. Others put their feet up, after all the work gets done by the others. But I don't want to be someone like that. I don't think I could be someone like that...
JON: "I see. How long have you been working with Elias?" HELEN: "I’m not." JON: [Faux-shocked] "Helen! Is that… a lie?" HELEN: "No! No, it’s not. I don’t know him. I’ve never even – Look, I’m happy here, all right?" Changing the subject, hehe... We know, that it was Elias who sent og!Helen to the Institute. Did he also suggest that Helen will probably be confused after her statement so there’s high chances of her finally walking through his door? Was it also Elias who sent Michael to Sasha, so they could find out to use CO2 extinguishers against Prentiss?
HELEN: "You are so difficult to like sometimes. I’ve been nothing but nice to you." JON: "Maybe that’s why I never trusted you." Ohhh, yes, I've talking about this in another post already. I'm super wary of people who are immediately over-the-top nice to me. That's very often a facade which hides a very ugly personality. (Also, that was a lie again. Helen threatened him in MAG 157, so not very nice. But very typical for that personality again. Stating untrue things in a beneficial and factual way, suggesting you should believe it.)
(STATEMENT) "Well, not a dead end. It’s a door that says ‘Honeymoon Suite’." HELEN: [Saucy] "Currently unoccupied…" (STATEMENT) "I turn to retrace my steps. I must have taken a wrong urn." HELEN: "Just in case you and Martin were looking for a room." Pfff, Helen is so pushy and nosy regarding things which are absolutely none of her business.
"How long… How long has Alex been alone now? " Ha! Another character called Alex!
The sound of laughter during the statement. So mean...
"She’d love nothing more than to help me, although she does hate to see me check out, it’s always so hard on her when guests leave." Making you feel bad for a totally normal thing...
VICTIM: "I don’t know how long I’ve been here." JON: "Look. I’m so sorry –" VICTIM: "You’ve got to help me!" JON: [Angrily] "Don’t touch me!" It's a stressful situation, but you're always allowed to set boundaries. No one gets to touch you when you don't want to. Again, it's just a shitty situation all over like so many others in TMA. Also, especially understandable that it’s Jon who doesn’t want to be touched... So many have hurt him..
HELEN: "Oopsie. Not so easy, is it? Keeping up your humanity?" Oh yeah, and then making you feel bad for setting boundaries...
JON: "You’re dangerous because for all the torture and cruelty, you still somehow got us to think you’re our friend." Mentioned it in MAG 183 (I think?) already that I'm not sure, what's more dangerous. More straight up hostile Helen. Or fun Helen. The one that makes you laugh about all her little manipulative comments. Schrödinger’s douchebag: Come on, don't be like that, it was just a joke!
JON: "No, you are the question of “What lurks behind a smile?” Is a friendship true, or is it reaching out with hands that cut you?" Being wary of the people who are over-the-top friendly... JON: "And when one face finally stopped smiling, you just changed the face." Helen taking over from Michael.
HELEN: "Fine. So if that’s all true… why? Why would I do any of that? What’s my actual motive?" JON: "I don’t think you even have one. It’s just what you are." I have asked myself this question so many times. And I've come to the same conclusion. There is no grand motive behind that. Just doing it over and over again, torturing others, they like that. The feeling of being able to make a person so submissive, so obedient that they will do everything to stay your friend. It makes me sick... I have once asked one of my “Helens” if she knows that those things she did are horrible. She got all smug and said yes and that she likes it and is proud of it. Fucking hell..
JON: "I will end you." [SILENCE BUT FOR SOME CREAKING] JON: "What, nothing? No smirk? A laugh? I’ve got you rattled." HELEN: "I’m not scared of you." JON: "Helen… Was that… a lie?" Smug and badass Jon is back, yaaaaaaaaaay!
JON: "Urgh!" [A STRANGE SOUND RINGS OUT AS THE ARCHIVIST REAPPEARS IN THE WASTELAND] MARTIN: "Christ, Jon!" JON: [Groggy] "Oh, Martin! Good." MARTIN: "Wh– Wh-wh-what… What happened? Th-th-there was the hotel and then…" Hmmm, I like the headcanon that Martin saw (and heard) something in the sky shifting and and suddenly, like "the sky ate him" but in reverse, it spits out Jon and Martin catches him^^ The soundscaping suggests otherwise though. After "Christ Jon" and during "Oh, Martin! Good." there's rubble to be heard, like climbing over debris. And only after "What happened?" we hear fabric rustling. So sounds to me like Jon fell out of the sky in front of Martin, then gets up and they hug.
JON: "Do you? Want to mourn?" MARTIN: "… A bit, I guess. I-I mean, she was our friend. Sort of. A bit." It's okay to be upset losing a "friend" like this. After all, there most definitely were fun times too, if it was just awful, you probably wouldn't have become their friend, after all.

Next month is the annual exhibitor showcase Cinemacon where movie studios tout their wares for the very anxious theater owners.
It has already been announced that Sony is sitting this year out, so no info on VENOM 3: THE LAST DANCE, to be released October 25, 2024.
While I assume there will be some changes to the lineup, so far it is shaping up to be:
OPENING DAY: International Day features a screening of Universal 80s series remake THE FALL GUY starring Ryan Gosling, Emily Blunt, Hannah Waddingham and Aaron Taylor-Johnson (who has said in a recent interview that it is a small role) ; directed by David Leitch (BULLET TRAIN, DEADPOOL 2)
DAY ONE: WB pulls up with their presentation "The Big Picture". It will be the first Cinemacon for James Gunn in his position as Co-Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of DC Studios.
I expect a song and dance from Gunn about how awesome sauce the new DC film universe will be
I'll believe it when I see it.
Sure to tease SUPERMAN LEGACY which stars David Corenswet as the title character, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane and Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor.
JOKER: FOLIE A DEUX, BEETLEJUICE, BEETLEJUCE
MORE STUDIO OFFERINGS
Also, FURIOSA: A MAD MAX SAGA
, the supernatural horror film THE WATCHERS, directed and written by Ishana Night Shyamalan, daughter of M. Night
, M. Night Shymalan's TRAP starring Josh Hartnett, ALTO KNIGHTS with Robert DeNiro playing a dual role.
Certainly don't expect anything to hear about THE BATMAN sequel other than it won't shoot until 2025. There has been no reason provided, but some say there isn't even a script, others say it was because there were no soundstages available in London to shoot this year.
DAY TWO: ANGEL STUDIOS - The outfit behind SOUND OF FREEDOM.
I suspect they will tease SIGHT starring Greg Kinnear and BONHOEFFER (aka GOD'S SPY) about German theologian Dietrich Bonhoeffer, starring August Diehl, Flula Borg and Clarke Peters.
LIONSGATE: I suspect they will tease Guy Ritchie's THE MINISTRY OF UNGENTLEMANLY WARFARE starring a pick-a-mix of men for all tastes - Henry Cavill, Alan Ritchson, Alex Pettyfer, Henry Golding and Hero Fiennes Tiffins
; the action-thriller BOY KILLS WORLD fronted by Bill Skarsgård and costarring Sharlto Copley, Andrew Koji (who is working like mad), Famke Janssen and Isaiah Mustafa.
Surely, another Bill Skarsgård film THE CROW with fka Twigs
; THE STRANGERS: CHAPTER 1, which is the third film in the franchise - doing a bit of FAST AND THE FURIOUS mathing. It stars Madelaine Petsch, Froy Guittierez and Gabriel Basso
At long last the BALLERINA has pliete into the spotlight. This JOHN WICK spinoff stars Ana De Armas, with Anjelica Huston reprising her role from JOHN WICK 2. It's direct by Len Wiseman who directed the UNDERWORLD films starring his ex-wife Kate Beckinsale.
BORDERLANDS, an action-comedy based on the game, brought to the screen by Eli Roth. Starring Kevin Hart, Jamie Lee Curtis, Jack Black, Cate Blanchett, Haley Bennett and Édgar Ramírez, amongst others.
and WHITE BIRD, which is in the same universe as the excellent children geared film WONDER. It was due to come out in 2023 but was pushed back due to the actors strike.
UNIVERSAL / FOCUS FEATURES: I suspect teases for Dev Patel's directorial debut MONKEY MAN. The film was originally slated to go to Netflix but Jordan Peele, under his Monkey Paw shingle, bought it and took it to Universal so it could have a theatrical release. *Granted, Netflix does a theatrical release for most of their films in certain markets, but I get Peele's rationale.
Their Monsters Universe theatrical idea didn't work, but Universal has realized there is more than one way to skin a cat. They are creating a Universal Monsters themed area at their parks and their monster/horror film ABIGAIL is a re-imaging of DRACULA'S DAUGHTER. It stars Alisha Weir, Melissa Barrera and Dan Stevens and features Angus Cloud in one of his last roles.
THE FALL GUY most definitely will have a place. Same with THE BIKERIDERS (with Austin Butler, Tom Hardy, Jodie Comer, Norman Reedus, Mike Faist, etc.), which was a 20th Century (Disney owned) Film, and even though it was the first major film out the gate ahead of Oscars/Golden Globes' FYC season with a screening and Q&A held in L.A., the studio purposely stalled the engine and towed it off their schedule. It will now be distributed by Focus Features in the U.S., and Universal, internationally.
Other possible teases? DESPICABLE ME 4, TWISTERS, the standalone sequel to the 90s film TWISTERS
, horror film SPEAK NO EVIL starring James McAvoy and Mackenzie Davis
, WICKED: PART ONE and Sir Ridley Scott's GLADIATOR 2 with Paul Mescal and Pedro Pascal.
There will also be a surprise screening; studio unknown.
DAY THREE: PARAMOUNT: Expected: the mixed live-action and animated comedy IF starring Ryan Reynolds, written/directed and produced by John Krasinski.
A QUIET PLACE: DAY ONE, GLADIATOR 2 (though this is a co-production with Universal, so maybe Uni will tout it), SONIC THE HEDGEHOG 3, the unending production that is MISSION IMPOSSIBLE 8,
WALT DISNEY: Possible: THE FIRST OMEN, KINGDOM OF THE PLANET OF THE APES
, MOANA 2, INSIDE OUT 2, DEADPOOL 3, ALIEN: ROMULUS, CAPTAIN AMERICA: BRAVE NEW WORLD and SNOW WHITE.
CinemaCon always closes out with their awards (which always ties into an upcoming release. Funny how that works.
So far the honourees are:
Star of the Year - Lupita Nyong'o (A QUIET PLACE: DAY ONE)
Breakthrough Performer of the Year - Joseph Quinn (A QUIET PLACE: DAY ONE)
CinemaCon Vanguard Award - Amy Poehler (INSIDE OUT 2)
Director of the Year - Shawn Levy (DEADPOOL AND WOLVERINE)
