i used to worry about it. i thought i'd get hate for writing rpf or for writing controversial tropes like dubcon. but i havent at all so far, the response to my work has been overwhelmingly positive from both my friends and the fandom at large. so no i dont really worry about it anymore...tho sometimes i wonder 'will ppl even like this?' when im writing smth that appeals to my hyper specific tastes

not all ships are For wanting them to be in a happy healthy relationship together. sometimes shipping two characters means you want them to be erotically obsessed with each other and become entwined in a mutually toxic love affair for a few months and then horrifically break each other's hearts and never speak again. sometimes you want them to be codependent best friends with enough repression to explode a submarine who only make out/have sex when they're at their worst. sometimes you want them to pine after each other for years, never say anything, and then die. sometimes you want them to kill each other. this, too, is shipping

i want to talk more about mm/jr here bc thats why i made this blog in the first place sooooo lets talk about them

the hardest thing about writing mm/jr is figuring out how mean is too mean for them to be to each other. bc there is def a too far even tho theyre awful ppl who say awful things. after all these are real ppl and i dont want to misrepresent them. as much as i do think that johnny has some unconscious antisemitic bias against malcolm due to being raised catholic (and just being a gentile in general lol) all of the evidence i have and the personal testimony given to me by certain ppl points to johnny being pretty respectful towards jewish ppl and not tolerating antisemitism from other gentiles. so i never want to write a fic that doesnt take that into account. it'd be unfair to johnny

buuuuut...johnny also loves saying nasty things to piss ppl off/hurt ppls feelings on purpose and since malcolm so easily shrugs off insults i def think johnny would try to make things a bit more personal in an effort to get under his skin. very john lennon and brian epstein type of thing. i think theres moments when he goes too far bc he wants to get a reaction for whatever reason. but malcolm knows johnny isnt actually hateful so he doesnt take any of that shit seriously and mocks johnny for going after low hanging fruit

meanwhile malcolm is...well hes malcolm lol he loves playing with stereotypes and loves getting under ppls skin. hes prob very aware that johnny's distrust of him stems in part from antisemitism so it'd be fun for him to mess around with that including and esp during sex. he cant help bringing it into dirty talk its a massive turn on for him (and for johnny). he also cant stop bringing up johnny's parents and teachers and priests during sex. kinking on their racial/cultural/religious difference is a massive thing for malcolm partly bc he has a fixation on catholics

love the connection worley draws here between dury and lydon. they both survived childhood ruining battles with illnesses that left them physically disabled (tho dury's disability was a lot more visible and debilitating, lydon's messed up spine and partial blindness definitely count as being a disability) and therefore unappealing/unmarketable in the music industry that, even before the hyper-visual mtv era, had little place for anyone considered physically unappealing by the cultural standards of the time. dury and lydon are both stars who could only become stars through punk as punk prided itself on celebrating the 'grotesque' and 'freaks' of the world

but more to worley's actual point and not just focusing on one sentence, i find it interesting how many ppl in our modern world consider the sex pistols some sort of hyper-masculine band when, during their existence, they were far from being considered as such. jon savage, author of england's dreaming and foremost historian on english punk, has talked quite a bit about how a major part of why the sex pistols appealed to him so much was how non-masculine johnny was compared to ppl like joe strummer and the rest of the clash who savage considers to be too macho. theres a reason why their first fans were all gay men and bisexual women

obviously this androgyny didnt always get positive responses, esp since it wasnt femme or even technically gnc which is often easier for ppl to swallow as they can put it into one of the two gender boxes our society allows for. the view of male punks as either having no gender or being some sort of third gender that was neither man nor woman stems, in part, from johnny due to his status as the most high profile member of the subculture in the 70s. the makeup other male punks, such as adam ant, wore ofc made this already incredibly homophobic and transphobic view of english punks a lot louder and more violent but johnny's status as YouthTM first human male second def did a lot to create that attitude. that infamous interview with a group of teddy boys talking about why they hate punks has johnny name-dropped during a conversation that also features one teddy boy admitting that his hate for punks stems from viewing them as a third gender and how that disgusts him to the point of wanting to commit violence

i find all of this very fascinating. johnny isnt particularly feminine but hes def not masculine, even when hes on stage. as worley says, he bypasses gender all together. due to the sex pistols splitting long before he could get any older then 21, the cultural image of johnny rotten remains as an eternal teenager

maybe thats why johnny's teddy boy outfit makes him look like hes doing drag. its an exaggerated performance of masculinity by someone who isnt actually like that...or maybe its bc hes wearing a collar and has bright orange bowie hair
