so, first off, I'm just gonna throw this out there: liking the idea of something - for instance, your boyfriend railing you into next week - is not an innate sign that that's something you'd like in real life. as long as we're talking about terminology, let's get into dom/sub and top/bottom. you're absolutely correct that they're not interchangeable, whatever the hooligans on various hellsites would have you believe. dom and sub are terms for power exchange play, when two people enact a power differential in which one partner is consensually given a great deal of control over the other, be it physically, psychologically, financially, or what have you. top/bottom simply refer to who is acting vs who is being acted upon during a sexual act; while some people identify intensely as either a top or a bottom, it's also a simple matter for those roles to switch on a dime depending on what kind of sex you're into. it's completely possible to have sex without designating anyone the top or bottom, and I'd argue that most people have sex without there actually being a dom or sub involved.

so can dom bottom, or a sub top? of course; people can mix and match whatever pieces of sexuality they want in their own explorations. a dom can boss their sub around like a little servant, giving them extremely detailed instructions about exactly how to rail them, and perhaps punish them (in the fun consensual way, obviously) if they fail to meet those expectations and don't get their dom off the way that was wanted. you can, and I cannot possibly emphasize this enough, do whatever you want forever.

a service top, incidentally, is generally considered a separate thing from a dom (which is not to say they can't overlap!) in that a service top isn't always dominating, but is topping because they enjoy getting their partner off in whatever way they like. the overlap of service tops and folks who are stone is notable!

in your particular case I would recommend not worrying so much about which of these terms, if any, are the correct one for you and focus way ore on exploring and playing with your partner to find a rhythm that works well for the two of you. doms, subs, tops, and bottoms all have something useful to teach people about how they like intimacy, but there's no rush to figure out which category, if any, you fit in. just focus on what's fun and feels good to you and toss the rest.

As a long time Supernatural fan and into all things fantasy I thought I was immune to vampire shit but that scene was harrowing. Like you could hear blood dripping, and the voice acting from everyone involved was truly a masterpiece

These are the wips that are partially published: a. At Thy Will - D/s AU, inspired by medieval marriage laws in the area that would later become Germany. I've talked a bit about it here before, it includes abusive relationships and fantasy sexism and also religious trauma b. The Tower Must Fall - unfortunately a bit neglected (but I plan on picking it back up, I promise), including assassin!Martin and witch!Jon slowburn enemies to lovers (Gerry is there, too!) c. A Treatise In Balance - basically just Jon getting snatched and turned into an avatar by each of the Fears. Includes art d. The Crackling Sound Of Magic - these are small fics where Jon is a mage in training under his cruel father Elias Bouchard and Martin is a kitchen hand in their household. also technically slowburn and lots of hurt/comfort because Jon keeps getting hurt

Nothing But The City - inspired by UDAD, where Jonah (while wearing Elias like a suit) performs a series of cyborg-like surgeries on Jon to use him to take control over the City that once had a name that is now long lost to time c. another fantasy au with magic, inspired by occudo's art (that I still want to eat. so pretty). including apprentice!Jon, reluctant bodyguard!Martin, and exasperated and probably evil (but hot) long haired Elias d. Archive AU - Jon is a fully developed Eye monster, way beyond human. Nobody but Elias knows. Martin joins the Archive crew, accidentally makes friends with the monster via tea, and falls in love e. teacher!Jon in Scotland - you've read it before, you love it as much as I do: Scotland Safehouse Period forever, nothing bad happens and Jon gets adopted by a bunch of nosy teenagers f. nurse!Martin AU - Martin is a nurse who deals with Jon's worm wounds (gets section 31-ed) and keeps meeting him while Jon is injured. Features the good ol' anonymous online kinky relationship (and so much research because i don't even know how German hospitals work let alone British ones) g. Magnus Academy - more teacher!Jon, but in dark, with magic, murder, abuse, blackmail, discrimination, etc. h. The Fourteen Hauntings of Jonathan Sims, Librarian - more AUs! this time it's medium!Jon time (and medium!Martin). There's ghosts, and the town is called Nevermore :) i. Vampire Stuff - loosely based on The Fearless Vampire Killers (but the German musical, not necessarily the film), featuring vampire!Jon, vampire!Elias, human Martin, Tim, Sasha (yes, Jon is Herbert) j. Martin Knife Blackwood - established jonmartin, Jon wants to propose, Martin used to be in organised crime and the mob boss Peter Lukas comes for him, drama, blood, guns, etc. k. magical bookshop - more magic. including season 4 levels of sad Jon, a traumatised mute teenage kid who is accidentally adopted by said sad Jon. Jon has a bookshop that shows up at random. like the tardis but with less control even than the Doctor has l. toxic JonElias with endgame JonMartin - this one's not fleshed out at all, but basically Jon gets to make friends and escape Elias' clutches (no Fears AU)

Shiloh is developing corruption

- bug collector

- not a full blown avatar but is kind of in the Jonathan Sims position to be influenced by a LOT of them

- feeds on Nathan’s anxiety (she thinks it’s her illness, but it’s more likely just dread that he’s a failure of a parent. He is.) (I love him why is he like that)

- 17 has her say “I always longed for true affection, but you compared me to a corpse”, so when she leaves at the end of the movie that signifies her evolution into an avatar (or rejection of it?) bc she is left with nothing but her bugs. We don’t really know

Nathan is either Slaughter or Hunt

- I definitely am more inclined for hunt for Nathan

- the hunting at the beginning and later when he and Shiloh are on the phone he definitely could do it a lot faster and less dramatically

- he definitely enjoys it is my point

- “thankless job” is also a prime example of his feelings on this job and or its moral implications

- obviously he’s unstable too and that influences jt but he kind of reminds me of Daisy Tonner where he’s over the ethical issue mostly

Luigi is definitely slaughter

- there’s not a really a need for question man is violent and angry I feel like there’s no question he shanks and yells and gets half naked for fun.

- his treatment of the gentern bringing coffee is a great example, he had no reason to freak out other than. Being like that. And also bc he can

- that’s about it actually he feeds on subordinates fear of his unforgiving temper it’s pretty CUT and dry

Pavi is. Hmmm. Flesh??

- I’m stuck on this one, however I think flesh fits best

- his face stealing reminds me of specific serial killer behaviors (usually due to parental issues) that involve using others body parts, usually skin (Ed Gein with his skin suit of his mother I think??) though I think his environment is part of why the face thing is a little less wrong in canon. Idk he’s a fucking FREAK okay

- also we never see his actual face so I feel an argument that it’s tied with dysmorphia isn’t unreasonable

- Pavi feeds off of adoration (even if it’s fake) from the Genterns as well as the fear of having your face skinned

- seriously what is wrong with him

- with the Genterns his boisting of “ask a gentern who they prefer” and overtly unacceptable sexual behavior (“my brother and sister should fuck”) feel like someone who wants validation and attention even if it’s not positive attention

Amber is Flesh too

- I think for a different reason from Pavi, she doesn’t have “inferiority” Dysmorphia that I think he has

- instead, I think Ambers behaviors are “superiority” dysmorphia (both terms I made up)

- in Ambers case she’s changing her appearance to cope with a shifting sense of self and strive for perfection caused by her notoriety and never being told no

- Amber feeds off of being desired and seen and is one of the most famous people in the known canon universe, but her blatant jealousy of Mag really depicts her motivation for perfection

- she also feeds herself to graverobber for drugs (deleted song ‘try my new parts’) I don’t care how good their surgical techniques are nobody is healing their hole that fast without hurting themselves somehow

- basically if Pavi is MAG 90 Amber is MAGP 2

Graverobber is End or Buried

- the end is for obvious reasons with corpse robbing and his lack of fear or caution around death @brainvomitintheparkinglot ‘s idea

- for buried, he’s literally a crack dealer

- he basically feeds the entire cities drug supply (trapping them in addiction that is hard to escape)

- the web usually deals with addiction but I don’t think he has manipulative or controlling motivation, he just works the system against other people

(Rottis corporation supplying everyone is the web, graverobber is a chunk of dust caught in it)

- as shown with Amber, he wont supply without money either, hypothetically pushing his clients into further debt (esp if they have geneco loans) AND addiction

- graverobber feeds off of the metaphorical suffocating nature of debt and addiction as mentioned, and well as literal suffocation

- following the drug thread, I will be treating zydrate like Heroin, in the idea it can be a powder or liquid (even though we only see it as a liquid in canon)

- like most painkilling drugs it can be assumed zydrate can induce vomit and therefore asphyxiation OR in the case of a powder that is inhaled, generally that isn’t optimal for breathing

- also graverobber is probably covered in corpse dust and like. Anthrax

Rotti is web (again, thank you @brainvomitintheparkinglot)

- his company owns the entire city (corporatocrocy)

- he literally controls everyone, his money controls his fucked up kids, and the entire system is his

- the rift with Shiloh and Nathan was organized by Rotti, and I feel like Ambers problem with Mag is somehow his fault too

- as far as I know, Mags blindness is never canonically explained, Rotti could easily be responsible like he was with Marni

- Rotti feeds off the obvious, control over everyone. He also is disappointed his kids found ways around his authority, and yet they’re STILL in his web (addicts and also fucked in the head bc of the circumstances he raised them in)

Mag is. The eye

- yeah. This one is the most direct

- I have a headcanon that she can see through cameras (how she found Shiloh) and how she seems to know all about what is happening in Shilohs life

- mag is both a victim and an avatar of the eye, she sees everything going on around her with the people she loves, but all eyes are always on her, trapping her where she is.

- literally had to do a Melanie king except she didn’t escape, the web and the eye often work in opposition in TMA while also being quite similar, she and Rotti much the same.

- “take these eyes I’d rather be blind” is an inadvertent argument with Rottis control of the web, he kills her for it

Lastly, Marni is either End or Desolation

- she’s not actually present in the film

- End is bc she died and yet is still so so important to the plot

-desolation is bc her actions are kind of why everyone in the story has issues

the whole flesh garden episode of tma hit me very deeply as someone who's trans, has struggled with an ed, and has chronic illness, but the one line in that whole episode that made me stop in my tracks? the one that made my heart freeze and my eyes widen for a second because they were words that, in one form or another, i had repeated in my head over and over and over, words i had used to make myself smaller, make myself quieter, make myself less noticeable and less annoying and more palatable to others? the line that even now in the months after hearing it repeats in my head in jonathan sims's voice and makes me go cold all over?

Moving away from my "being obnoxiously defensive about Aziraphale" era into "being obnoxiously defensive about Ed Teach" era.

Both of which differ from my constant background state of "being obnoxiously defensive about Jonathan Sims" by the way. Jonathan Sims, after all, is a blameless angel who has literally never done anything wrong in his life, ever. The other two are not (even the one that is actually an angel); I just get annoyed by fandom double standards.

Snow was my favorite character when I read Hunger Games. Do not yell, do not hurtle rocks of hate at me, I finally understand why. I’ve read Songbirds and Snakes and watched it.

Snow is posh and polished, he is a statue of respect and authority. That’s Jonah Magnus, that’s Gabriel(GO), that’s Stede(to a degree- Stede is not an ass), that’s Sherlock, that’s the Doctor. It’s a Poshness that only certain villains can accomplish, and most English characters are gifted with.

The backstory adds another level of respect and appreciation for Snow from me. I am not rich, and I am surrounded by rich people in the state I moved to from North Carolina(where I was raised). I went to a school where money was practically flung around, a donation to the school that wasn’t mandatory but very much suggested was almost 200 dollars. I understand Snow, not because I’m dirt poor and barely living off of my parents jobs, I understand being surrounded by people who can use money to get out of shit that deserve to face.

Snow and I also have a father that is extremely proud of his name, my father isn’t dead, neither is my mother but I understand wanting to live up to the expectations of your father. I have expectations also from my father just like snow who is expected to love up to his father’s name.

Snow doesn’t seem to quite understand to love correctly, just like me! He love bombs Lucy Gray(TO A DEGREE- SAVING SOMEONES LIFE BECAUSE YOU WANT TO IS HUMANE BUT ALSO ITS CORIOLANUS SNOW) and he is extremely possessive. Now I am not that extreme because I literally cannot find the way to love someone without completely throwing myself into Michael’s domain because I spiral(haha I’m funny).

Coriolanus is also the smartest person in his class and his makes sure that that is known, I am like that but not the smartest just pretty smart. He also helps his peers even if he despises them, and given I have Social Anxiety I am terrified to disappoint so I do that too.

Coriolanus also respects people on a level of perspective before becoming a peacemaker that’s commendable. Given the fact his father was killed and he had to SCAVENGE for food as a kid he is allowed some disrespect for the districts. He still respects them once they’re in the capital and he tries to get them an alright time, for his own sake but still.

That leads on to the fact that based on how he’s been treated for DECADES he wants to go as high as possible to help his family and to live up to his father’s name is understandable. I feel like that to a degree because I have constantly been put on high standards by my parents but also because I came from a poor town where GT was only for fourth and fifth graders and had no advanced classes and was IMMEDIATELY placed in an advanced class for math when I moved.

Anyways, all this to say, he has an inclination to make decisions for others on a whim that’ll it will help himself because he cares deeply for Tigress and his Grandma. Yknow who also acts on whims? Stede Bonnet. We love him- Ed teach, we love him too. Aziraphale??? Yes some of the fandom hate him, but I don’t. James and Sirius make A LOT of choices on whims at Hogwarts as the marauders- JONATHAN FUCKING SIMS MY GOD DONT GET ME STARTED- Trexel Geistman- woo-boy…

Tim took one good look at him and his demeanour immediately changed. Jon looked terrible, the bags under his eyes were much more prominent than usual, he wasn’t wearing his usual formal wear and was instead wearing a soft looking shirt and one of Martin’s old cardigans he must have “borrowed”.

“Jon, I have that statement you were looking for.” Tim wandered into Jon’s office, files in hand. He’d been so many late nights that he was staying at his place a lot instead of Jon’s or Martin's so as to not wake him up. He’d been messaging Jon as much as he could to make sure he was alright but it wasn’t the same. Martin had been run ragged too so he usually stayed at Tim’s since it was closer and they were both at the institute late. That meant this was probably the first time he’d seen Jon for more than a passing moment in a good few days. 

“Thank you.” Tim took one good look at him and his demeanour immediately changed. Jon looked terrible, the bags under his eyes were much more prominent than usual, he wasn’t wearing his usual formal wear and was instead wearing a soft looking shirt and one of Martin’s old cardigans he must have “borrowed”. His hair was up in a messy bun which he rarely ever did at work and his face was twisted slightly in pain. 

“God, you look like shit.” Might not have been the kindest way to put it but he knew something was wrong so there was no point beating around the bush.

“Thanks, Tim.” Jon just kept writing so Tim walked round and put his hand on the paper so that he’d stop and look at him.  

“No, I’m serious. Are you alright?” Jon sighed and Tim could see that he wasn’t. 

“I’m fine, I just haven’t been sleeping well.” Tim raised his eyebrow.

“Well or at all?” Jon just lowered his eyes and Tim immediately knew what to do. “Martin!” He was in the doorway within seconds, out of breath most likely from running and panic.

“Are you two alright?” Tim brought Martin into the room and over to him while Jon sat in his chair avoiding both of their eyes. 

“No. Love, when was the last time you slept.” Tim watched Jon duck his head lower.

“I don’t feel safe to answer truthfully.” 

“Jon.” Tim could tell Martin was very close to going full care mode on their boyfriend and was absolutely ready to assist. Jon just mumbled an incoherent answer and sunk into himself more. “Jon.” He sighed and Tim knew the answer wasn’t going to be good.

“I think it was about three days ago.”  

“JON!” Tim was sure that only cats and dogs could hear Martin and he couldn’t blame him. Jon had the least amount of self-care instincts out of all three of them which was saying something but even this was bad for him. Tim knew it wasn’t his fault but that didn’t help the nagging feeling that if he’d been staying with both of them then Jon might have gotten some sleep or at least rested. 

“I’m fine-” 

“Nope, don’t even try it.” Tim was trying to stay collected but he could feel the worry bubbling inside him. He couldn’t imagine the amount of pain Jon was in on a normal day never mind after not sleeping for three days.

“You can’t stay here after not sleeping for 3 days!” Martin on the other hand was still squeaking and if he’d been a cartoon he would’ve had smoke coming out of his ears.

“Watch me.” Jon looked only a little bit confident but Tim knew he was stubborn so unless someone physically removed him from the building he’d stay. So, he knew exactly what to do and by the look of it so did Martin.

“Tim?” 

“Got it.” Tim nodded to Martin and then quickly scooped up Jon while Martin grabbed his bag and cane before going to grab Tim’s and his things.

“Got wha- Ah, get off me.” 

“Nope, you need a nap. Come on.” Jon kept trying to wriggle out of Tim’s arms but eventually gave in and lay his head against Tim’s chest. The sight of it made Tim’s heart soften. Like this he looked so small and tired.

“This is humiliating.” Jon grumbled and it was then that Martin returned, meeting them at the staff entrance door that led straight out to the car park. As much as Tim thought it would be funny to carry his boyfriend outside he thought it best to avoid humiliating him on the busy London street.

“Well then next time don’t come in if you haven’t slept.” Martin added in while opening the door to his car. Tim placed Jon into the back seat as gently as he could then hopped into the front passengers side.

“You two are infuriating.” Jon murmured.

“We love you too.” Tim smiled to himself as Martin started the car. They were all in need of a break if he was honest. He could see how tense Martin’s shoulders had gotten and how quiet he’d been. They were all in need of some relaxation and he would be darned if his boyfriends weren’t going to get it.

Everyone has the same fucking names. Steve? Steven? Stephen? Steve who? Or was Stede autocorrected? Ed? Eddie? Diaz? Munson? Blackbeard? Brock? Jonathan Harker? Byers? Sims? One of the million other Jonathans winging their way around this chaotic universe we call the internet? Did you mean Buck or Bucky? I can get three quarters of the way through a post and have to switch my entire world view. And some of you don't even tag fandoms, leaving me forever in limbo. This is unsustainable. Fandom is reaching a critical mass of Eds. I demand new male character names.

2022 had nothing on 2021, my magical year of fandom, but I did write some things! including one heist AU, two workplace comedies and three post-apocalyptic AUs, each very different from the next. I started the year trundling along in my Ted Lasso groove, was hijacked by pirates, fell briefly into the Upside Down and went on a five-month hiatus from fandom before being suddenly side-swiped by The English earlier this month (I have yet to recover). It has been My Year Of Reluctant Fascination With The American Midwest, and also (semi-relatedly) My Year Of Quoting Bruce Springsteen. In total: wrote eight fics and about 80,000 words. AO3 Wrapped, here goes:

The heist!AU where Trent Crimm, Interpol, meets Ted Lasso of the FBI over the case of Rupert Mannion’s stolen Hockney. I published the last chapter of this on Jan 1, 2022, so it counts!

Journalism!AU in which Martin becomes The Magnus Inquirer’s newest reporter under freshly promoted news editor Jonathan Sims, whose story he once introduced an error into. I regret that this AU will probably never be finished, though I had such plans!

The Station Eleven!AU where the Richmond Players are a travelling Shakespearean company performing in the ruins of a post-pandemic England. WIP - will resume when S3 returns.

A Gentleman's Guide To Love And Piracy (Our Flag Means Death | Ed/Stede, Oluwande/Jim | T | 13,260 words)

Stede Bonnet's agenda for attending the International Piracy Convention: rebrand, make some industry contacts, steal back his ship without being murdered by the keynote speaker, a.k.a. the vengeful love of his life. Post-S1 workplace comedy fix-it, now with union action.

can't start a fire without a spark (Stranger Things | Steddie | T | 9,341 words)

Canon-divergent AU where instead of getting murdered by the Upside Down, Eddie and Chrissy run off to start a rock band. In 1987, they return to a Hawkins that is slowly collapsing into another dimension. Post-apocalyptic vibes, but like really low-key.

Fix-it-of-sorts AU in which Cornelia returns to America to speed-run found family with Eli because tell me those two wouldn’t be collecting kids left, right and centre once they got their revenge quest out of the way.

The post-apocalyptic Mad Max Fury Road zombie AU where Cornelia escapes David Melmont, who hires bounty hunter Eli to bring her back. WIP, finishing really soon!
