I don't think we talk enough about how The Bedrock happened right after John got back from the dark world

Like, just imagine; you're clawed your way through hell, filthy and unfamiliar hands sinking deep into the carnage all around you, spilling blood that has long coagulated and rotted in its veins onto earth that is stained with fire and has been bled dry of life

You've fallen. Your integrity, your identity, rended from you as if a fractured soul were being wrenched apart again, and left a shuddering mess of loose ends and loose screws in its wake

Imagine you had just struggled to the top of the mountain of bloated, decaying destruction, wrought by your own hand, and finally been granted your end of a deal that would force your soul to keep this twisted shape it had adopted, curled in on itself to protect whatever remnants of warmth it still held. It hasn't unfurled in so long that even you don't know if that spark still burns

Imagine you've just made it out of hell

You've been greeted by giddy laughter, by relief, by more love and warmth and humanity than you've felt in indescribable eons

Imagine how a human hand in your own, not looking to hurt or clinging on for mercy, would feel after so long, regardless of the danger around you

Imagine, then, that it only take a day for all that to fall apart. For all that you worked and fought and killed and broke for, to be kneeling on the ground, sobbing, as he tells you that he deserves to die

Deserves hell

Deserves the dark

That this light, this anchor, this man, wants to let himself be smothered by rage and guilt and hurt

That the act of self sacrifice you had been clinging to as a tribute of love may have been more selfish than you ever knew

And yet

Still loving him

Still hating to see him in such pain

Still desperate to convince him he doesn't deserve to die

Still desperate to convince yourself there is light, and love, and warmth, in this shared soul which seems more and more mangled the longer you stay there

Still refusing to let him drown

they just don't make characters like jon archivist sims. he spends an entire season having a forty episode long delusional breakdown and that's only maybe the third or fourth worst period of time in his life. he gets intervened on twice. he gets kidnapped thrice. during one of those kidnappings he spends a month tied to a chair getting forcibly moisturized by a plastic ringmistress mannequin and no one notices. he fully dies for six months but gets up again when a friendly grim reaper gives his unbreathing body a pep talk. he spends several episodes at the start of the final season so depressed that it's unclear if he even moves for multiple days in a row. the basis for his magic powers is that he is so traumatized that he begins to need continuous further trauma in order to live, which gives him the ability to explode people with his mind. he spends about fifty seconds at the top of an episode self-harming directly into a tape recorder, which is not even the most fucked up thing to happen to him that episode. he finally cried on audio for the first time in the penultimate ep and the only reaction I saw for several days after was wildly enthusiastic cheering. he's missing two ribs and he's at least 80% scar tissue by volume and the only canon information we have about his appearance is that he looks terrible at all times.
