Dragonkeeper Chronicles by Donita K. Paul (2004-2008)
When Kale, a slave girl, finds a dragon egg, she is given the unexpected opportunity to become a servant to Paladin. But on her way to The Hall, where she was to be trained, Kale runs into danger. Rescued by a small band of Paladin's servants, Kale is turned from her destination.
Feeling afraid and unprepared, Kale embarks on a perilous quest to find the meech dragon egg stolen by the foul Wizard Risto. But their journey is threatened when a key member of the party is captured, leaving the remaining companions to find the Wizard Fenworth, attempt an impossible rescue, and recover the egg--whose true value they have not begun to suspect.
Clocktaur War by T. Kingfisher (2017-2018)
A paladin, an assassin, a forger, and a scholar ride out of town. It's not the start of a joke, but rather an espionage mission with deadly serious stakes. T. Kingfisher's new novel begins the tale of a murderous band of criminals (and a scholar), thrown together in an attempt to unravel the secret of the Clockwork Boys, mechanical soldiers from a neighboring kingdom that promise ruin to the Dowager's city.
If they succeed, rewards and pardons await, but that requires a long journey through enemy territory, directly into the capital. It also requires them to refrain from killing each other along the way At turns darkly comic and touching, Clockwork Boys puts together a broken group of people trying to make the most of the rest of their lives as they drive forward on their suicide mission.
The Deed of Paksenarrion by Elizabeth Moon (1988-1989)
Paksenarrion — Paks for short — is somebody special. She knows it, even if nobody else does yet. No way will she follow her father's orders to marry the pig farmer down the road. She's off to join the army, even if it means she can never see her family again.
And so her adventure begins... the adventure that transforms her into a hero remembered in songs, chosen by the gods to restore a lost ruler to his throne.
Here is her tale as she lived it.
Paks is trained as a mercenary, blooded, and introduced to the life of a soldier . . . and to the followers of Gird, the soldier's god.
Chronicles of the Imaginarium Geographica by James A. Owen (2006-2016)
An unusual murder brings together three strangers, John, Jack, and Charles, on a rainy night in London during the first World War. An eccentric little man called Bert tells them that they are now the caretakers of the Imaginarium Geographica -- an atlas of all the lands that have ever existed in myth and legend, fable and fairy tale. These lands, Bert claims, can be traveled to in his ship the Indigo Dragon, one of only seven vessels that is able to cross the Frontier between worlds into the Archipelago of Dreams.
Pursued by strange and terrifying creatures, the companions flee London aboard the Dragonship. Traveling to the very realm of the imagination itself, they must learn to overcome their fears and trust in one another if they are to defeat the dark forces that threaten the destiny of two worlds. And in the process, they will share a great adventure filled with clues that lead readers to the surprise revelation of the legendary storytellers these men will one day become.
Dragon Jousters by Mercedes Lackey (2003-2006)
The first book in this thrilling new series introduces us to a young slave who dreams of becoming a jouster-one of the few warriors who can actually ride a flying dragon. And so, in secret, he begins to raise his own dragon...
Frontier Magic by Patricia C. Wrede (2009-2012)
Eff was born a thirteenth child. Her twin brother, Lan, is the seventh son of a seventh son. This means he's supposed to possess amazing talent -- and she's supposed to bring only bad things to her family and her town. Undeterred, her family moves to the frontier, where her father will be a professor of magic at a school perilously close to the magical divide that separates settlers from the beasts of the wild.
In Other Lands by Sarah Rees Brennan (2017)
The Borderlands aren’t like anywhere else. Don’t try to smuggle a phone or any other piece of technology over the wall that marks the Border ― unless you enjoy a fireworks display in your backpack. (Ballpoint pens are okay.) There are elves, harpies, and ― best of all as far as Elliot is concerned ― mermaids. "Serene," said Serene. "My full name is Serene-Heart-in-the-Chaos-of-Battle." Elliot? Who’s Elliot? Elliot is thirteen years old. He’s smart and just a tiny bit obnoxious. Sometimes more than a tiny bit. When his class goes on a field trip and he can see a wall that no one else can see, he is given the chance to go to school in the Borderlands. It turns out that on the other side of the wall, classes involve a lot more weaponry and fitness training and fewer mermaids than he expected. On the other hand, there’s Serene-Heart-in-the-Chaos-of-Battle, an elven warrior who is more beautiful than anyone Elliot has ever seen, and then there’s her human friend Luke: sunny, blond, and annoyingly likeable. There are lots of interesting books. There’s even the chance Elliot might be able to change the world. In Other Lands is the exhilarating new book from beloved and bestselling author Sarah Rees Brennan. It’s a novel about surviving four years in the most unusual of schools, about friendship, falling in love, diplomacy, and finding your own place in the world ― even if it means giving up your phone.
Iron Butterfly by Chanda Hahn (2012-2014)
Imprisoned, starved and left with no memories, Thalia awakens to find herself at the mercy of an evil cult known as the Septori. Their leader has chosen Thalia as the test subject for a torture device of untold power, designed to change and twist her into something that is neither human nor Denai.
Escaping, Thalia finds an unwilling warrior to protect her and an unlikely Denai to befriend her. After finding a home at the Citadel as a servant, Thalia’s worst nightmare comes to life and she begins to show signs of power. Scared and unable to control her gifts, she tries to hide her past to fit in among the Denai. But the Septori want their latest test subject back and will stop at nothing to retrieve her, dead or alive.
Old Magic by Marianna Curley (2000)
Jarrod Thornton is mesmerizing, but Kate Warren doesn’t know why.
Jarrod is the clumsy new boy at school that Kate can’t take her eyes off, and it’s not just because he has amazing eyes, but because she senses something different about him, and when he inadvertently blows up the classroom, she knows exactly what it is. He has powers like her, except he doesn’t know it and Kate sets out to show him. On their journey of discovery Kate learns Jarrod has an ancient curse on his family that will keep hurting his little brother and parents if they don’t do something to remove it.
Faerie Tale by Raymond E. Feist (1988)
Successful screenwriter Phil Hastings decides to move his family from sunny California to a ramshackle farmhouse in New York State. The idea is to take some time out, relax and pick up the threads of his career as a novelist. Good plan, bad choice. The place they choose is surrounded by ancient woodland. The house they choose is the centrepoint of a centuries-old evil intent on making its presence felt to intruders.

The Deed of Paksenarrion series by Elizabeth Moon
Cover art by Kevin Davies
Baen Books, 1988-1989
Sheepfarmer's Daughter (1988)
Paksenarrion — Paks for short — is somebody special. She knows it, even if nobody else does yet. No way will she follow her father's orders to marry the pig farmer down the road. She's off to join the army, even if it means she can never see her family again.
And so her adventure begins... the adventure that transforms her into a hero remembered in songs, chosen by the gods to restore a lost ruler to his throne.
Here is her tale as she lived it.
Paks is trained as a mercenary, blooded, and introduced to the life of a soldier . . . and to the followers of Gird, the soldier's god.
Divided Allegiance (1988)
Once a sheepfarmer's daughter, now a seasoned veteran, Paksenarrion has proven herself a fighter. Years with Duke Phelan's Company taught her weaponry, discipline, and how to react as part of a military unit.
Now, though, Paks feels spurred to a solitary destiny. Against all odds she is accepted as a paladin-candidate by the Fellowship of Gird. Years of study will follow, for a paladin must be versed in diplomacy and magic as well as the fighting arts. But before she is fully trained, Paks is called to her first mission: to seek out the fabled stronghold of Luap far to the west. The way is long, the dangers many - and not even the Marshal-General of Gird can say whether glory of ruin awaits.
Oath of Gold (1989)
Paksenarrion - Paks for short - was somebody special. Never could she have followed her father's orders and married the pig farmer down the road. Better a soldier's life than a pigfarmer's wife, and so though she knew that she could never go home again, Paks ran away to be a soldier. And so began and adventure destined to transform a simple Sheepfarmer's Daughter into a hero fit to be chosen by the gods.

(All three belong to @messinwitheddie)
The first pic is Kii taking a moment of hesitation and probably second thoughts about joining forces with Soxx and Hitz. She’s concerned about what her own subjects will think of her now that she has no choice but to work with both of her enemies.
Second pic is about Hitz trying to persuade Kii into getting one of his paks installed into her back, but she put up a very long fight before she finally caved in and let him do it. Soxx is just there for moral support. He does not want to argue with Kii. That woman has a snakes tongue. Her insults stings!🤣
“Kii, my dear. This will benefit you SO much more than just that small, out of date device on your chest. With my paks, your intelligence will grow quicker than the average rate.” Hitz told her on a charming tone. The female tallest is starting to regret coming here in the fist place. Kii refused to meet with them last time but after a threat from Hits, saying he’ll have her dragged out of her hive with all of her subjects watching. His and Soxx’s troops are at her door right now. Safety reasons to make sure it’s not an ambush on the both of them while they are in one of her empty rooms. Kii’s antenna twitched at another attempt to get her to agree with their demands. It’s humiliating and she hate herself for it.
“You want to put one of those contraptions on me? No. I saw the way those paks turn irkens into mindless slaves to it. And the smeets….” She shutter.
“The smeet factory was a success! You were there when we presented them to you.” Sox siad.
“THE SMEETERY WAS MY VISION! YOU DESTROYED MINE AND REBUILT IT IN YOUR HIVE! KEEP THAT USELESS SCRAP METAL AWAY FROM ME. I WON’T BE MANIPULATED BY YOU TWO!”
Kii snapped at the two men. The mention of her smeetry. The one thing she invested in as an alternative to her hives population problem and to make sure that no other female drone have to go through the
“Why can’t you find some other hive you can harass?” She spat. Glaring right at the red-eyed tallest. Sox said nothing but Hitz smirked.
“What other hive? Did we not take care of them all?”
“Curse you both….” Kii almost forgot what they’ve done to the others. Most of the damage was Soxx’s fault but Hitz played his part in it as well.
“Remember what we’ve told you. With the combination of my control brains, Hitz’s paks, and your smeetery. We can make a one hive nation with the most powerful technology and triple the army numbers that can outmatch all other forces.” Soxx said. Hovering up to her. He hoped his more softer tone will get to her. Kii looked irritated right now.
“I don’t trust either of you. And I do not believe my drones will come to terms with your method.”
“Then make them understand. You’re their tallest. They should listen to you and following your orders without question. This is what we’re aiming for.”
Soxx told her. This is all coming down on Kii too fast. “Isn’t an alliance enough for you already? She said.
“Yes but it is incomplete if you do not comply. There will be new additions to the pak’s function that I’m working on and Soxx agree with me that you should also wear one. Unless….you want things to return to the way they were between us?” Hitz grin as soon as he saw the change in expression on Tallest Kii’s face.
“That will not be necessary. Give me time to think this over. Until then you can see yourselves out.”
With that being said. Tallest Kii exit the room with a puff of anger and irritation. Soxx leans towards Hitz. “Do you think we should’ve told her the whole truth of our plan? About the control brains and what we are going to do with our bodies after it’s finished?”
“Patience, Soxx. She’ll come around soon. Tallest Kii can be reasoned with. After so many centuries pressing her to make alliance with our hives. She’s bound to give in. Now let us be off. Hitz lead the way out the door. Soxx trailed behind him.

"Sometimes a perceived obstacle is just an opportunity in disguise."
Timeline
Age 0:
She is born in an Asian country to her mother and father.
Age 4:
She starts taking ballet lessons learned from her mother, which she is a natural in.
Age 6:

She begins performing professionally in front of crowds in Asia.
She wins her first gold medal.
Age 7:
During a performance in North Korea, an overhead war plane drops a bomb on the city she is performing in, killing thousands and wounding hundreds.
She miraculously survives, though not without injury. Her mother and father, however, are both killed.
She is found by North Korean soldiers who, after healing her, force her to enlist in the army as a child soldier.
She spends up to two years being trained as a soldier.
Age 9:
After completing her training, she is sent to actual combat.
Unfortunately, her unit is decimated by enemy forces and she is subsequently captured.
Having no use for her, she is sentenced to be a slave and is bought by a minor noble in China.
Upon being brought, she is branded with a slave mark on her back.
Age 10:
She learns early on to obey her master, less she gets punished.
Unfortunately, her master is a sadist and punishes her for seemingly no reason at all.
The trauma and abuse eventually causes her to lose her voice, making her mute.
She becomes nothing more than a doll or a puppet.
Age 11:
One day, her master kills one of the more popular servants in the house.
This proves to be his undoing, as the slaves, upset at this, rise up in revolt.
The girl, seeing her chance, escapes during the fighting, fleeing into the city.
She runs for days on end, eventually arriving in Hong Kong, where she collapses from exhaustion.
She is found by a middle-aged Chinese couple who takes her in.
In exchange for doing some chores, she is treated fairly and kindly by them.
Age 12:
She frequently helped her 'Auntie' out in her garden, due to the fact that she loves the lotus flowers that grow there.
Age 13:
After two years of being treated with kindness and charity, her voice returns.
She refers to the man and woman as 'Uncle' and 'Auntie', not wanting them to replace her parents.
Age 14:
One night, she spots some devious-looking men leaving the house.
She brings it up with her uncle, who reveals that he is a Pak Tsz Sin, or a 'White Paper Fan' of the Triad.
His wife, her aunt, is a Cho Hai, or a 'Straw Sandal'.
The girl's interest in the Triad grows.
Age 15:
She asks permission to join the group. Her uncle speaks to the Hung Kwan, or the 'Red Pole', in charge of one of Hong Kong's districts, who agrees to recruit the girl.
She begins training to become a Chai, or a foot soldier.
Because of her skills at ballet, she takes to the training easily.
Within half a year's time, she becomes a small-ranking member of the Triad.
Age 17:
She gradually takes on missions, building up rank and credibility.
Eventually, she is put in charge of seducing and assassinating a rival gang leader who oversteps his boundaries.
She performs her mission, flawlessly.
Age 18:
She obtains her high school diploma.
She receives word that her 'Uncle' has sadly been killed during a shoot-out between rival gangs.
Her 'Auntie' takes his place as the district's 'White Paper Fan'.
This opens a new position for the district's 'Red Pole', which the girl quickly takes.
She is unanimously voted into her new position, and takes to it with ease.
Age 21:
She starts to grow bored with her work as a 'Red Pole'.
She places another into the role, letting them be sworn into the position.
She begins to branch out, putting her skills for hire.
She refuses to reveal her name, only calling herself, "Lotus".
She is hired by a variety of people for a number of missions.
Age 22:
She gains a reputation as an efficient agent, willing to do whatever it takes to fulfill her mission.
Age 23:
She meets the legendary "Black Dalhia" during a mission, befriending her.
She betrays and uses the assassin as a distraction to steal something from an organization that she is providing security for.
The two fight, but the young woman makes a quick getaway, leaving the assassin for security to handle.
Age 24:
She is given a mission to steal information on the Mafia in Japan.
She makes contact with two of the Mafia's killers, Lola Takahashi and Kureha Koizumi.
She befriends them, but eventually leaves them both high and dry once she has obtained the information she was hired to get.
Age 25:
After being hired to steal some priceless artifacts in Africa, she begins to become interested in jewelry design.
She decides to go back to school in Hong Kong to learn how to.
Age 26:
She receives word that her 'Aunt' has been promoted to Fu Shan Chu, or the 'Deputy Mountain Master'.
Age 28:
She graduates from the University of Hong Kong with a Bachelor's in Fine Art and Gemology.
She starts up her own jewelry business called, Lotus Bloom Jewelry, which quickly becomes popular due to its lotus design.
Age 29:
She is hired by the Chinese government to infiltrate Japan and find out what Chuohku is up to.
She speaks with her 'Auntie' and the Triad about her mission; both allow her to accept it, also feeling ill at ease about the Japanese government.
She is told that she will make contact with two other foreign agents and join them to enter the D.R.B. as a team.
She is also given a mission by the government to ██████████████████. She accepts.
She takes the name of Hoàng Diệu as her alias.
She arrives in Arakawa in Tokyo, Japan and makes contact with the two other agents: Alexis Ward and Ivelisse Sofia Martinez.

Mnozí vstoupili do teritoriální obrany. Další pomáhali tím, čím mohli. Jídlo. Palivo. Technika. ~ The word hero can have several forms in Ukraine. A soldier protecting his homeland, an electrician repairing power lines under the threat of artillery fire, but also a farmer who sows grain in fields littered with mines in Ukraine and secretly prepares Molotov cocktails to throw at the enemy's equipment. I learned this from farmer Alexei, who accompanied us to his fertile fields. "The first days we were all in shock here, when the enemy's equipment swept through our territory, and then a large guerrilla movement simply broke out. Many joined the territorial defense. Others helped with what they could. Food. Fuel. Equipment. Farmers also donated their expensive drones to the army," the man tells me. That morning we also encountered another form of civil resistance at Suma. Our Igor arranged an interview for us with a person who otherwise would not go on camera. Mykola is an Ukrainian mechanic who extricates Russian military equipment stuck in the Ukrainian black soil, repairs it so that the soldiers can use it again to defend Ukraine. He didn't take us to the secret place where technical miracles happen, but as a backdrop we found one of the many vehicles left behind by the Russians. "This one isn't going anywhere," he waved his hand at the tank next to which we were standing. "Look. Optics? Unusable. Maybe the tracks would be useful for something, but otherwise it's a piece of scrap…" he assessed the piece of metal by the side of the road with his expert eye. Mykola didn't tell us much about his work, but immediately after filming he boasted of the videos he managed to make.

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — Joined by his top military officials handling his nuclear-capable weapons and munitions factories, North Korean leader Kim Jong Un arrived in Russia on Tuesday, where he is expected to hold a rare meeting with President Vladimir Putin that has sparked Western concerns about a potential arms deal for Moscow’s war in Ukraine.
North Korea’s official news agency said Kim boarded his personal train from the capital, Pyongyang, on Sunday afternoon, and that he was accompanied by unspecified members of the country’s ruling party, government and military.
Jeon Ha Gyu, spokesperson of South Korea’s Defense Ministry, said in a briefing that the South’s military assesses that Kim’s train crossed into Russia sometime early Tuesday. He didn’t elaborate how the military obtained the information.
North Korean state media showed photographs of Kim walking past honor guards and crowds of civilians holding the national flag and flowers, and also of him waving from his green-and-yellow armored train before it left the station. Kim’s delegation likely includes his foreign minister, Choe Sun Hui, and his top military officials, including Korean People’s Army Marshals Ri Pyong Chol and Pak Jong Chon.
A group of senior officials were at the station to give the leader a “hearty send-off,” according to the Korean Central News Agency, which did not specify whether the train had crossed the border. Citing unidentified Russian regional officials, Japanese broadcaster TBS reported that Kim’s train crossed the border and arrived in the border town of Khasan.
A brief statement on the Kremlin’s website on Monday said the visit is at Putin’s invitation and would take place “in the coming days.” KCNA said the leaders would meet — without specifying when and where.
Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said that Putin and Kim will lead their delegations in talks and could also meet “one-on-one if necessary.” He added that Putin will host an official dinner for Kim.
The talks will focus on bilateral ties, Peskov said. “As with any of our neighbors, we feel obliged to develop good, mutually beneficial relations,” he added.
A possible venue is the eastern Russian city of Vladivostok, where Putin arrived Monday to attend an international forum that runs through Wednesday, according to Russia’s TASS news agency. The city, located about 425 miles (680 kilometers) north of Pyongyang, was also the site of Putin’s first meeting with Kim in 2019.
The visit would be Kim’s first foreign trip since the COVID-19 pandemic, which had forced North Korea to enforce tight border controls for more than three years to shield its poor health care system. While Kim has shown to be more comfortable using planes than his famously flight-adverse father, he has also used his personal train for previous meetings with Putin, Chinese President Xi Jinping and former U.S. President Donald Trump, reviving a symbol of his family’s dynastic rule.
Associated Press journalists near the North Korea-Russia frontier saw a green train with yellow trim — similar to one used by the reclusive Kim during previous foreign trips — at a station on the North Korean side of a border river.
The train was seen moving back and forth between the station and the approach to the bridge that connects the countries, but ithad not crossed the bridge as of 7 p.m. local time (1000 GMT).
Citing unidentified South Korean government sources, the Chosun Ilbo newspaper reported that a Kim-Putin meeting is possible as early as Tuesday.
The Yonhap news agency and some other media published similar reports. South Korea’s Presidential Office, Defense Ministry and National Intelligence Service didn’t immediately confirm those details.
U.S. officials released intelligence last week that North Korea and Russia were arranging a meeting between their leaders as they expand their cooperation in the face of deepening confrontations with the United States.
According to U.S. officials, Putin could focus on securing more supplies of North Korean artillery and other ammunition to refill declining reserves as he seeks to defuse a Ukrainian counteroffensive and show that he’s capable of grinding out a long war of attrition. That could potentially put more pressure on the U.S. and its partners to pursue negotiations as concerns over a protracted conflict grow despite their huge shipments of advanced weaponry to Ukraine in the past 17 months.
“Arms discussions between Russia and the DPRK are expected to continue during Kim Jong Un’s trip to Russia,” said White House National Security Council spokesperson Adrienne Watson, using the abbreviation for North Korea’s official name of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea. “We urge the DPRK to abide by the public commitments that Pyongyang has made to not provide or sell arms to Russia.”
State Department spokesman Matthew Miller said Washington will monitor the meeting closely, reminding both countries that “any transfer of arms from North Korea to Russia would be a violation of multiple U.N. Security Council resolutions,” and that the U.S. “will not hesitate to impose new sanctions.”
North Korea has possibly tens of millions of artillery shells and rockets based on Soviet designs that could potentially give a huge boost to the Russian army, analysts say.
In exchange, Kim could seek badly needed energy and food aid and advanced weapons technologies, including those related to intercontinental ballistic missiles, nuclear-capable ballistic missile submarines and military reconnaissance satellites, analysts say.
There are concerns that potential Russian technology transfers would increase the threat posed by Kim’s growing arsenal of nuclear weapons and missiles that are designed to target the U.S., South Korea, and Japan. Based on North Korean state media photos, Kim’s delegation possibly includes Pak Thae Song, chairman of North Korea’s space science and technology committee, and Navy Admiral Kim Myong Sik, who are linked with North Korean efforts to acquire spy satellites and nuclear-capable submarines.
Kim Jong Un also seems to be bringing Jo Chun Ryong, a ruling party official in charge of munitions policies who had accompanied the leader on his recent tours to factories producing artilleries and missiles.
After decades of a complicated, hot-and-cold relationship, Russia and North Korea have been drawing closer since Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022. The bond has been driven by Putin’s need for war help and Kim’s efforts to boost the visibility of his partnerships with traditional allies Moscow and Beijing as he tries to break out of diplomatic isolation and have North Korea be part of a united front against Washington.
While using the distraction caused by the Ukraine conflict to ramp up its weapons development, North Korea has repeatedly blamed Washington for the crisis in Ukraine, claiming the West’s “hegemonic policy” justified a Russian offensive in Ukraine to protect itself.
North Korea is the only nation besides Russia and Syria to recognize the independence of two Russian-backed separatist regions in eastern Ukraine — Donetsk and Luhansk -– and it has also hinted at an interest in sending construction workers to those areas to help with rebuilding efforts.
Russia -– along with China -– have blocked U.S.-led efforts at the U.N. Security Council to strengthen sanctions on North Korea over its intensifying missile tests while accusing Washington of worsening tensions with Pyongyang by expanding military exercises with South Korea and Japan.
The United States has been accusing North Korea since last year of providing Russia with arms, including artillery shells sold to the Russian mercenary group Wagner. Both Russian and North Korean officials denied such claims. But speculation about the countries’ military cooperation grew after Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu made a rare visit to North Korea in July, when Kim invited him to an arms exhibition and a massive military parade in the capital where he showcased ICBMs designed to target the U.S. mainland.
Following that visit, Kim toured North Korea’s weapons factories, including a facility producing artillery systems where he urged workers to speed up the development and large-scale production of new kinds of ammunition. Experts say Kim’s visits to the factories likely had a dual goal of encouraging the modernization of North Korean weaponry and examining artillery and other supplies that could possibly be exported to Russia.
Some analysts say a potential meeting between Kim and Putin would be more about symbolic gains than substantial military cooperation.
Russia, which has always closely guarded its most important weapons technologies, even from key allies such as China, could be unwilling to make major technology transfers with North Korea for what is likely to be limited war supplies transported over a small rail link between the countries, they say.

Early Interaction Between Moonies and MRA
Bio of Kang Sun-ae from FFWPU: Mrs. Kang Sun-ae was born in Seoul in 1915. She graduated from Ewha College in 1937. She lived during a time when the role and value of women were changing in Korea. She had married and had children before she joined our church in 1958, without her husband. This is a testimony that evokes the Korea of a past time, and as such is a study of some of the values and sacrifices that characterized the spirit of the early period of our movement [The following is written by Mrs. Kang on an early experience in the Unification Church]
After the tour, I went back to the headquarters church. I had planned to finally take time to recuperate and begin taking medication, but Mrs. Ji Seng-ryeon came to look for me again. Once again, I had to visit our Gangwon District. We both paid a visit to the governor of Gangwon Province together with Mrs. Choi Jeong-sun. After receiving the governor’s permission to give a lecture to the officers of the Gangwon provincial government, we invited Choi Chang-rim to give the lecture. The lecture received a great review, enabling us to give a lecture to even the public officers working in the city of Chuncheon. On this foundation, our activities developed by the day and we could convey our message to the chairman of the Promotion of Reconstruction Committee,[2] the director of the YMCA, pastors, universities and even broadcasting companies. We even visited the Army Second Corps, but could not meet the commander. So we went all the way to the Counterintelligence Division and asked to talk to the general in charge. An officer reprimanded us saying, “Do you know what this place is?” We had lunch at a cafeteria for army officers. We also talked with the adviser on the troop information and education and the director of a broadcasting station.
Once, a Moral Re-Armament (MRA) movement leader paid a visit to Gangwon and invited religious figures under the name of the provincial governor. I remember being the only woman invited.
After the governor’s skilled greetings and personal introductions, we listened to the motive and purpose of MRA. After the presentation, the governor then said, “I would like to welcome Mrs. Kang, being the only woman here today, to say a few words” and made me stand. I tried to press down my beating heart and thought, “This is the moment I should convey Father’s teachings.” I started by saying, “There cannot be a result without a cause. Hence, we can see a cause through its result.” All the participants on that day, including the governor, appeared quite surprised by my message. Many said they had difficulties comprehending such a highly philosophical lecture.
Since that event, the chairman of the Promotion of Reconstruction Committee always comes to our church and give words of encouragement whenever the community leaders’ meeting was held. The entire Chuncheon area, starting from the governor to those working in the local government felt like members. However, I aimed for more, thinking, “How can I make all the people of Gangwon listen to the lecture?” So, I made another request to Governor Pak. According to him, the Home Affairs director, the Public Affairs chief, and the local section chief had to all agree on my proposal. He suggested that I meet them. I went to their offices at the provincial government building almost every day. With a heart that I had to accomplish this before Father returned to Korea from his world tour, all the prayers and dedications I invested paid off and I ended up persuading all those who opposed us.
One day, a local official, Lee Seok-bong, and I urged the Home Affairs senior director with earnest hearts. He gave in with a smile, saying, “No matter how hard I try, Mrs. Kang’s enthusiasm just outmatches mine.”
The next day, I met the local section chief and he quietly revealed to me about an internal problem and told me to talk with the chief secretary. Soon afterward, I went to the chief secretary. The chief secretary reported the matter to the governor and once he came back, he instantly summoned the Home Affairs director and the local section chief and told them right in front of me, “Why are you opposing what people are doing? Tell everyone that if they don’t do it, it will be the same as committing hara-kiri.” He instructed that an official notice be sent immediately. I met the Public Affairs chief and raised my two hands up saying “I am a Unification Church member” and then put them down. He told me that I looked like an innocent child when I did that. I was certain that our pleas were conveyed to Heaven and that it was God who was helping us.
A few hours after this decision was passed, a dam collapsed, flooding the surrounding area. The flooding caused many problems. However, because the provincial government office had immediately written the official notification, it was conveyed to the church. God’s work and providence could have almost gone up in the air in one second. This enabled the community leaders to act as Victory Over Communism lecturers.

Unification Church/FFWPU makes false claims over photo to promote Moon as a ‘hero.’
Moon himself claimed to have carried Chung-hwa Pak for 600 miles!
Won-pil Kim, Bo Hi Pak, Hyo Jin Moon and Jin-hun Yong all repeated the lie.
From 1983, when the photo (above) surfaced in a newspaper story (see below), the Unification Church leaders always knew it was not of Moon and Pak. But they decided to use it for propaganda, regardless of the truth.
Three men made the journey from Pyongyang in North Korea to Kyongju in the winter of 1950-51: Sun Myung Moon, Won-pil Kim and Chung-hwa Pak. Pak remained in Kyongju – for a couple of years – while Moon and Kim continued on to Busan on the south coast. The Unification Church frequently STILL claim this photo is of Moon carrying Chung-hwa Pak to Yongmae Island. The detour to Yongmae Island never happened either! Won-pil Kim was forced to remove the photo from his testimony book – and he had been one of the three refugees! He repeated his false testimony all over the world.
▲ The photo was taken on Jan 14th 1951 by Cpl J.J. McGinty of the US Army. The caption at a Korean War exhibition in Seoul reads “A Korean carries his aged father across the icy Han River at Chungju, Korea, in their flight to the South to escape the onrushing Chinese Communist Forces.”
▲ The profile photo of Moon praying (above) was taken at Heung-in Dong in about 1955. Comparing the facial profiles of Moon and the refugee carrying his father, it is clear that Moon is not in the photo. Moon was 30 at the time of the journey. The refugees are both older than Moon and Pak were in 1950.
Chung-hwa Pak explains how he first saw the photo: “One day in 1983, the international department of the church contacted me. They asked me to stop by because they had some questions to ask. They showed me a picture in the Choong Ang Ilbo newspaper. It was a picture of a man carrying another man on his back, and they were crossing a river. They asked me whether it was a picture of Moon carrying me on his back. I answered them that we had no chance to take any pictures at that time. I never crossed any river on Moon’s back. They said nothing and I thought that was the end of it.”
▲ Here is the photo, published on October 24, 1983 in a memoir about the Korean War in The Joong-ang Ilbo 中央日報.

Chung-hwa Pak explains how his ankle was fractured – his leg was not broken:
“One day [in Pyongyang] I was surrounded by a gang of thugs who called themselves a security force. They were just thugs who joined the North Korean side when it was in control, and later swapped to the opposite side. They said, “You were a real communist who served as a company commander in the North Korean army. We will kill you!” Then some of them struck my leg with hammers. My ankle was fractured and I couldn’t move. I thought that my life was going to end there. An unexpected twist of fate saved me. Fortunately, I was saved by Korean Military Police. I was questioned, but because I had been imprisoned in North Korea I was soon released. All the other prisoners were executed. They were shot. I was a black belt in judo, but I really needed to get treatment for my injury. There were no hospitals in Pyongyang that were functioning.”

Hyo Jin Moon gave a sermon based on the invented story: Inheriting God’s Heart And True Parents’ Heart
April 28, 1991 Belvedere, New York
When he was carrying that person on his back he tried to compare himself to … it’s bothersome sometimes to think of some of the people who were with Father in the beginning. Anyway … many of you have seen those pictures of Father carrying Mr. Pak. He was carrying that person across the seabed [to Yongmae Island] a distance of about six kilometers.
I’ll try to tell you later the circumstances surrounding it. I’ll try to explain it in the video. He had literally to carry this person even though his own physical condition, just coming out of prison, was not good. All through his time in prison he utilized his imagination, thinking.. “I must overcome no matter how difficult it is.” He gave himself inspiration. He relied on his imagination to see that his work was incomparable to the kind of suffering God was facing. He really tried to think about God’s heart and tried to visualize the suffering of God. Based on the visuals that he created with his imagination about God, he overcame all those difficulties, even when he was carrying Mr. Pak. Of course it was physically difficult; he had just come out of Hungnam prison, living under those circumstances for almost three years. Obviously, he was not in shape physically to carry anybody for that long distance, let alone across a slippery, muddy seabed. Try to put yourself in that situation. But he thought to himself, “I’m not carrying a man, I’m not feeling this physical pain.” While he was carrying this person he tried to think about God’s heart. He imagined, ‘This load is nothing compared to what I must bear in order to complete the mission of restoring humanity. This is nothing compared to what I must face later on.” Based on that idea, relying on his pure imagination, Father drew a pure rationale to help him persevere through all kinds of hardship.
Ultimately they reached their destination, but couldn’t find any boat to travel down to South Korea [Inchon] and he had to walk back carrying this man again. He had to travel the same course again. It’s just unbelievable that anybody in that situation, indebted to a person in that way, would ever forget their gratitude. But this person, he rejected Father later on. I guess he couldn’t bear the persecution that he was receiving from all around him. He couldn’t take it so he left. That’s the course of Father. In a way that is the essence of his life. Over and over. People who were to assist and support Father rejected him because of their own individual lack of understanding.
Through these difficult times Father relied on his imagination. He believed in the ideal world. He believed that what he imagined would one day come true.

Chung-hwa Pak said, in a 1993 interview in Seoul, that on the way south Moon had only carried him a couple of times, and each time for only around 400 yards, during the entire journey from Pyongyang to Kyongju. Pak clearly said that Moon had never carried him across any water.
Michael Breen recounts just two incidents of Moon carrying Pak in his book, Sun Myung Moon, the early years – on pages 129 and 135.

Here is how Moon boasts about his achievement: The Necessity for the Day of Victory of Love
January 15, 1984 – Tarrytown, New York“Upon the victory of my prison experience, I can claim the foundation for the fatherland. After being liberated by United Nations forces, I carried Mr. Chun Hwa Pak 600 miles from North to South Korea. Most people aren’t even able to go beyond their own needs, but I showed the example of serving others by carrying Mr. Pak for that distance.”

Here are the words of Bo Hi Pak in an interview in the documentary “Emperor of the Universe” which was broadcast in 2000:
Narrator: “His followers speak with awe of how he carried an injured man across Korea.”
Bo Hi Pak: “roughly 200 miles walking and walking in a mountain he carried him on the back. 80kg man on the back, all the way to the south. To me alone that shows him the messiah to me.”

Michael Breen’s description in his book ‘Sun Myung Moon, the early years’ (pages 135-136) is no doubt much closer to the truth than the words of Moon and Bo Hi Pak:
“From Jechon, they took the old road, which used to be the main communication link from Seoul to the south-east in the days before the railroad. It took seven to eight hours one day to struggle over the Moongyeong Pass, at the boundary of North Chungchong and North Kyongsang provinces. Kim carried the bicycle, and Moon carried Pak up the steep, icy track, which was covered in fresh snow. At the top of the pass, they walked through the ancient gate. They stopped at the town of Caun. Pak’s leg was improving and from here, he was able to ride the bicycle without being pushed. …
With Pak now able to walk, they travelled rapidly southwards, through Andong, Uiseong, and Yongcheon. They arrived one evening at Koncheon, near the historic town of Kyongju. …
Moon and Kim Won-pil [left Pak behind in Kyongju and] continued on to Ulsan, a fishing port on the east coast. There they bought train tickets, and travelled the last fifty kilometres of their journey to Pusan in two hours. They rode up front, clinging on to the front of the engine. They arrived at Choryung Station in Pusan, cold and hungry, on January 27, 1951.
However, on pages 129-130 Breen does include a version of the Yongmae Island story which he most probably got from Won-pil Kim.

Here is what Jin-hun Yong presented in 2011. He has known for decades that Moon, Kim and Pak never went to Yongmae Island.
How much can these Unification Church leaders be trusted?
