HELLO! I have to know, what did you think of Madhouse at the End of the Earth??? What were your favorite parts?? :3c pls share your thoughts
OMG THANK YOU i will say i have literally not stopped thinking about this book since i finished it early last week. i have a normal amount of sticky notes marking my favorite quotes/events and other notable moments.
(pictured: exactly 120 sticky notes.)
literally i don't even know how to move on from this book, it made me so insane. i NEED to do horrible and illegal sex acts to adrien de gerlache. there isn't enough de gerlache rpf to satisfy my desire to see him stepped on. he's so utterly pathetic and useless and stupid. no redeeming qualities whatsoever. just a soggy idiot who gets them stuck in the pack on purpose and then has the audacity to regret it. like how do you get any better than this. i cannot believe this man was real and actually existed in the same world i live in today. what the hell man.
anyway. favorite parts are probably. de gerlache and lecointe getting the belgica stuck in the pack on purpose was like, an unparalleled reading experience; i physically yelled out loud while reading it because i couldn't believe my eyes. but here's my full-ish list of every part i marked for being completely deranged:
lecointe SLEEPING on the tonite to thaw them out. literally what an insane man. ok girl (secondarily: lecointe thawing out the tonite by holding them close to the fire. GIRL)
that time cook and amundsen tore apart a seal and drank its blood directly from its veins while tollefsen watched in horror
every single time sancton described cook's nose (the "peninsula" comment got me bad)
"strangely enough the thing in sir john's narrative that appealed to me most strongly was the sufferings he and his men endured," amundsen wrote. "a strange ambition burned within me to endure those same sufferings."
and by god he did. even if he had to force the issue (the iceberg plan is a particular fave)
everything about the penguins, from de gerlache's petulant, childish refusal to eat them because he was salty the men didn't like the food he picked out, to amundsen's obsession with eating raw penguin meat, to the fact that they lured the penguins to the ship with van mirlo's godawful cornet playing
the time they caused a fire on tierra del fuego and had to go put it out, only to return to the ship to see it decorated for christmas. nothing says season's greetings like the minor destruction of someone else's land
they ran the ship aground. TWICE. before ever even making it to antarctica. TWO TIMES!!!!!!!!!!
cook and amundsen's first date climbing up a mountain and nearly plummeting to their certain deaths once each
de gerlache hosting a meeting about what to do when they were out of the ice, being pathetic about it, then begging lecointe to let him change the minutes so he'd sound cooler
DANCO'S BODY STANDING UPRIGHT AT HIS FUNERAL AS IF IT WERE POSSESSED
the fact that everyone hated michotte's cooking and yet no one bothered to even do anything about it. like what. if you hate it that bad make your own food cmon girls......
the unexplained random screaming that amundsen, cook, and koren heard but no one else did............. okay! #normalthings #sanitywin
cook going off the rails worshiping the sun. antarctica claims yet another victim (cook's sanity)
speaking of cook, the fact that the most likely theory for why everyone went insane was cyanide poisoning. from cook's photo developing solution. the DOCTOR did all this. it seriously doesn't get funnier than that
cook hanging penguin carcasses along the belgica's hull as they made to escape the pack. like imagine being in puntas arenas and seeing this ship no one is expecting come into port and everyone has these crazed eyes, some of them are screaming and in the throes of a full mental breakdown, and there's fucking penguin carcasses hanging off the ship like some kinda charms. the mental image alone sent me into hysterics i swear
and most importantly, the fact that all of this happened and they still managed to keep the ship. i think sir john, crozier, and shackleton (et al) are rolling in their graves over this expedition. most incompetent freakass men you know got to keep their ship and yours is at the bottom of the ocean. i can't even believe it.
on a serious note this was just genuinely a great book, it's written so well and in such a particular way; reading nonfiction has never been so fun—sancton made these cold boys sound like shounen anime characters, for real. it was awesome seeing the steps they took to ensure survival and the mistakes they made which undermined the expedition. there's a lot to learn from this expedition and a lot to admire about it, for what it was. it was also just an insane ride from beginning to end—everything went wrong, nearly every guy on that ship was in way over their head and completely wrong for the job, and they kept making the worst possible choices at every turn. the fact that they survived is a miracle and honestly i do think, even though cook was probably accidentally responsible for how crazy they got, he deserves a lot of praise for keeping the ship together and being so proactive in their survival. and never have two people matched each other's freak the way amundsen and cook did, oh my god. they're calling tollefsen the madman while yearning to plummet from an antarctic mountain or live on an iceberg. but sure tollefsen was sooooo crazy.
anyway sorry this is really long but holy shit this book made me so crazy. it's gonna take such a long time for me to get to a point where i can be normal about the belgica after reading this. holy shit man.

Herzlichen Glückwunsch zum Geburtstag, Gertrude Welcker! ❤️
(July 16, 1896 – August 1, 1988)
Gertrude Welcker was a stage and silent film actress; her film career was short lived, lasting from 1917 to 1925. The role she’s best known as, the alluring and enigmatic Countess Dusy Told of Fritz Lang’s 1922 epic crime thriller masterpiece, Dr. Mabuse, the Gambler.
Below is a summary of her life and career, with the people she had collaborated with as an actress.
She was born in Dresden, Saxony, Germany on July 16, 1896. Her younger brother Herbert was born in 1898. Gertrude’s father worked as editor-in-chief and general manager of the Posener Tageblatt, he died in 1909.
During the First World War, she visited Max Reinhardt’s acting school in Berlin. In 1915-16, she had starred in productions at the Albert Theatre in her hometown. During the years of 1916-19, Welcker performed at Deutsches, Kammerspiele, and Volksbühne theatres. Her stage roles include portraying a prostitute in August Strindberg’s Meister Olaf, Lesbia in Friedrich Hebbel's Gyges and His Ring, Recha in Gotthold Ephraim Lessing’s Nathan the Wise, Sister Martha in Gerhart Hauptmann's The Ascension of Little Hannele, and Desdemona and Jessica in William Shakespeare’s Othello and Merchant of Venice respectively.
Her film debut in 1917 was in Felix Basch’s Eine Nacht in der Stahlkammer as Jane Kendall, starring Harry Liedtke as her husband. Her next film was as an angel in Hans Trutz in the Land of Plenty, starring and directed by her stage collaborator Paul Wegener. The film also featured film director Ernst Lubitsch who portrayed Satan.
In 1918, she was in Lupu Pick’s Der Weltspielgel with Bernd Aldor and Reinhold Schünzel. She also starred in Viggo Larsen's The Adventure of a Ball Night with Paul Bildt and Paul Biensfeldt.
Welcker was also in Carl Froelich’s Der Tänzer with Walter Janssen.
She was the lead in the low-budget films, Die Geisha und der Samurai in 1919 and Eine Frau mit Vergangenheit in 1920.
Gertrude Welcker acted in films alongside Conrad Veidt, but those films are sadly considered lost. They portrayed siblings in F.W. Murnau’s Evening – Night – Morning and in Carl Boese’s Nocturne of Love, with Veidt as Frederic Chopin. (I, for one, would’ve loved for her to have been in a film as one of his leading ladies!)
In Hans Werckmeisters 1920 sci-fi film, Algol: Tragedy of Power, she portrayed Leonore Nissen opposite Emil Jannings. It also starred Hanna Ralph, Hans Adalbert Schlettow (whom Welcker would appear with in Part II of Dr. Mabuse), and John Gottowt. The sets of the film were designed by The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari’s Walter Reimann.
She also appeared in Richard Oswald’s Lady Hamilton in 1921 as Arabella Kelly, in her first scene she is seen with Theodor Loos.
In 1922, Welcker portrayed her most infamous role as Countess Told in Dr. Mabuse, the Gambler starring Rudolf Klein-Rogge, with Aud Egede-Nissen, Alfred Abel, and Bernhard Goetzke. Also, in that same year - Welcker was in Carl Froelich’s Luise Millerin, an adaptation of Friedrich Schiller's Intrigue and Love as Lady Emilie Milford, another of her noteworthy roles. Previously, she was in a stage production portraying the role of Lady Milford's maid, Sophie. The film's all-star cast featured Lil Dagover as the title character, Paul Hartmann, Walter Janssen, Friedrich Kühne, Fritz Kortner, Werner Krauss, and Reinhold Schünzel.
She portrayed the villainess Gesine von Orlamünde of Arthur von Gerlach’s 1925 period drama film, Chronicles of the Grey House. It stars Lil Dagover, Paul Hartmann, Rudolf Forster, and Rudolf Rittner. Thea von Harbou was the film’s screenwriter with music composed by Gottfried Huppertz.
Her final film role was in Goetz von Berlichingen of the Iron Hand as Adelheid von Walldorf. She continued to act on stage until 1930. She has a total of 64 film credits to her name.
Around July 1930, Welcker married the Swedish painter Otto Gustaf Carlsund. She met him while on a trip to Paris. Their marriage lasted until August of 1937 and had no children. Before WWII broke out, she worked as an editor for UFA and by 1941, was active for the Red Cross. Some time before the war's end, she managed to leave for Sweden, and lived the rest of her life there.
It’s a great loss that so many of the films Gertrude Welcker did are considered lost and that her career as a film actress was as short as it was. Certainly, that many of those lost films showcased her great versatility. Gertude Welcker carried a remarkable set of talent, grace, beauty, charisma, and wit and is one of my most favorite actresses of the silent era I love.
Her filmography can be viewed here and here.

Carol Twombly
Carol Twombly is an incredible and unique creative force who is to thank for majority of the graceful characters found in several typefaces such as Trajan and Charlemagne. During Carols childhood in New England, she spent a lot of her time exploring several artistic techniques and composition. Having specific interest in sculpture, Carol followed her architect brother to Rhode Island School of Design (RISD). Once there, she changed her major to graphic design. Carol says, “I discovered that communicating through graphics - by placing black shapes on a white page - offered a welcome balance between freedom and structure.” Though graphic design became her career focus, Carol also specialises in basketweaving, drawing, painting, and jewellery making.
After graduating RISD and a year spent working in a small Boston graphic design studio, Carol accepted an invitation from Bigelow and joined a small group of students in a newly formed digital typography program at Stanford University. The program, which has been discontinued, awarded Carol and her colleagues Masters of Science degrees after two years of study in computer science and typographic design. Carol has designed a number of very popular and widely used text and display typefaces. Trajan, Charlemagne, Lithos, and Adobe Caslon are inspired by classic typefaces and characters from the past - from early Greek inscriptions, around 400 B.C., to William Caslon’s typefaces of the 1700s. Designs like Viva and Nueva explore new territory while maintaining traditional roots. In 1994, she received the Charles Peignot award from the Association Typographique Internationale for outstanding contributions to type design. She was the first woman and only the second American to receive this prestigious honor.

Johnson Witehira: Johnson Witehiras work has the purpose of bringing all cultural aspects of Maori culture back into the lives of Maori and has alot of cultural responsive media and design.
Johnson lives in Wellington, where his work is prominent and successful there.
“My kaupapa (mission) as both an artist and designer is to bring Māori visual culture back into the lives of all Māori. This is done through careful consideration of how indigenous culture, design and technology intersect. We once created all the things in our world; the clothes, buildings, vehicles and tools. Nowadays everything is made for us. If we’re lucky we get to decorate. I want to put Māori back in the drivers seat, so we’re active participants in creating the tools and the world we want to live in.”
Overseas, works from Ko Aotearoa Tēnei (2012) series are on permanent display in a number of New Zealand Embassies and Consulates (Shanghai Consulate, NZ Embassy in Dublin, NZ High Commissionto Canberra and the NZ Consulate Hawaii). Animal of the Day!
Gerlache Orcas (Orcinus orca)
Conservation Status- Data deficient (Data inadequate to determine a threat category)
Habitat- Antarctic Ocean
Size (Weight/Length)- 5443 kg; 7.9 m
Diet- Fish; Seals; Penguins; Whales
Cool Facts- Gerlache orcas, or type B (small) orcas are groups of orcas that live in the Antarctic and do not migrate, unlike other orcas. Although all orcas are technically one species, there are several different types of orca (A-D) that range in size and slight changes in coloration. Gerlache orcas have a slightly yellow appearance rather than white. This is due to algae building up on their skin and the cold waters not triggering their skin to shed. The algae eventually gains a yellow color, giving Gerlache orcas a unique look. They feed mostly on seals and live in large family groups. These guys are experts at creating tidal waves to sweep over ice flows and wash seals into the ocean.
Rating- 12/10 (Black and white is too basic.)
