Ray Terrill Reading List
I don't think one of these already exists around here, so here it is! I read/skimmed 200+ comics in which Ray appears, made note of any relevant appearances (as opposed to cameos or extremely minor roles), and compiled them into a chronological list for your reference. Issues that I would consider essential reading (your opinion may differ!) are in bold; everything else I would consider optional.
Please note: the Rebirth version of Ray is different enough to be a completely separate character in a completely separate continuity, so I am not including any of that material on this particular list.
The Ray Vol. 1 #1-6 (the miniseries that introduces the character)
Black Condor #9-10 (notable as a glimpse of Ray's life between his intro and his joining the JLA, trying to adjust to the real world)
Justice League America #71 (Ray is recruited for the JLA)
Justice League America #73, 75-77 (Ray plays a very minor role in these and other early JLA appearances, but I'm including them and the ones below in case you want a sense of how that went)
Black Canary Vol. 2 #8 (Ray meets Dinah Lance, and there will be consequences later in his second solo series)
Justice League America #78-79, Annual #7, 80-83
Guy Gardner Vol. 1 #15
Bloodbath #1
Justice League America #84
Justice League Quarterly #13
Justice League America #85-88
Guy Gardner: Warrior #20
The Ray Vol. 2 #1-2 (beginning of his second solo series)
Justice League America #89
Justice League Task Force #13
Justice League International Vol. 2 #65
Justice League Task Force #14
Justice League Task Force #15
Justice League Quarterly #15 (featured as a main character in one story)
The Ray Vol. 2 #3-5, 0
Zero Hour: Crisis in Time #5, 4, 3, 2, 1, 0 [numbered backward intentionally] (Ray doesn't play a huge role, but he makes a significant contribution, and this event has lasting consequences)
Justice League Task Force #0, 17-24 (from here on, Ray is a significant supporting character in this team book, and its stories will occasionally intersect with his solo)
The Ray Vol. 2 #6-12, Annual #1, 13
Damage Vol. 1 #14 (a team-up with Grant Emerson, whom he met at Zero Hour)
Justice League Task Force #26
The Ray Vol. 2 #14
Justice League Task Force #27
The Ray Vol. 2 #15-19
Justice League Task Force #29-30
Underworld Unleashed #2-3 (adds some extra context to the arc above)
Justice League Task Force #31-37
The Ray Vol. 2 #20-28
Final Night #1-3 (crossover event involving darkness, of course Ray's involved in a supporting capacity)
Green Lantern Plus #1 (team-up with Kyle Rayner, last glimpse into Ray's personal life as established in his solo)
Action Comics #733 (after Superman undergoes a change in his powers, he turns to Ray for advice)
JLA Vol. 1 #29-31 (Ray's former Task Force teammate Triumph is back and evil and uses mind-control on Ray and others in an attempt to take over the JLA)
Guide to the DC Universe Secret Files & Origins 2000 #1 (only notable because Ray turns up in a class that is mandatory for him to take to stay in good standing with the JLA after the mind-control incident)
JSA: Our Worlds at War #1 (doing his part as a JSA reservist during the Our Worlds at War event, first time working with the Freedom Fighters)
Young Justice Vol. 1 #41, 45-55 (is invited to join Young Justice and doesn't get to do much but does get actual characterization)
Adventures of Superman #614-616 (has only a very minor role here but it's useful as an explanation for what happened to him after Young Justice ends--he contracted a weird disease)
JSA Vol. 1 #49, 73 (established as a part of the Freedom Fighters along with Grant Emerson)
Infinite Crisis #1 (the Freedom Fighters are attacked and mostly killed, Ray is taken prisoner, he's present for the rest of this series but doesn't really do anything besides be imprisoned and later rescued)
52 #1 (only notable for Ray's being welcomed back by Black Canary and Green Arrow after his imprisonment, you can skip the rest)
Uncle Sam and the Freedom Fighters Vol. 1 #7-8 (dramatically returns to confront someone posing as the Ray on a newly reformed version of his old team)
Uncle Sam and the Freedom Fighters Vol. 2 #1-2, 4-8 (none of the Freedom Fighters series are good Ray content, especially this one, which features a poorly executed attempt to reconcile him and his father)
Final Crisis #4, 6 (I have no idea what's going on this series but we get Ray interacting with speedster children and looking oddly like his father)
Weird Western Tales #71 (Ray gets attacked by a Black Lantern during the Blackest Night event)
Freedom Fighters Vol. 2 #1-9 (Ray is...present, I guess? But he gets almost no characterization and not much interesting to do.)

ID: An infographic showcasing all noteworthy appearances of Kendra Saunders. The background is dark green, the infoboxes at the top are in gold and the reading guide boxes are in yelllow.
Infobox 1 has an image cutout of Kendra in her Hawkgirl uniform with the following text next to her:
Kendra Saunders was the second person to carry the name, Hawkgirl, her great-aunt Shiera Sanders Hall being the first. An identity she has held since 1999 and to this day. Kendra Saunders had a Latina mother named Trina Saunders while her father was Michael Saunders, also the son of Cyril "Speed" Saunders who was a detective & a founding member of the OSS in the 40s. She was born & raised in Austin, Texas. Kendra Saunders was the reincarnation of Shiera after Shiera had died during the Zero Hour event. She was a troubled teenager who had committed suicide by Overdosing two years after her parent's murders when she was 17, only for Shiera's soul to find her. Kendra was revived and was no longer herself, now having the memories of Shiera and her past lives. However, it'd take her years until those memories would properly resurface. Realizing what this meant, her grandfather, Speed Saunders, took her in and began training her as the next Hawkgirl, in honor of her adoptive first cousin. He'd soon drop her off to the care of the JSA at the age of 19, where her journey would begin. As a result of not remembering her past lives, she felt no romantic attachment to Hawkman (Carter Hall) when she first met him.
Infobox 2 has the current Hawkgirl logo for the 2023 series at the top above the following text:
About The List
This is a reading guide for Kendra Saunders a.k.a. Hawkgirl. All of her appearances (Main & Supporting), excluding mere cameos. These appearances are listed in chronological order (if possible) and vary in format depending on her role in the story.
About Me
This reading guide was heavily inspired by @jlquarterly, who you can find on Twitter and Tumblr. If you have questions about the reading guide, feel free to dm me on either my Twitter, @SIM0NJESS, or Tumblr, @shayera-thal. End of second infobox.
The reading list boxes are split into two big boxes with one small one in the middle and comics related to events or certain periods are listed in sub-boxes marked with headings.
To make it more readable for the image description, the start of sub-boxes are marked with HEADING: and the end with /END. Also, appearances where she is a main character are bolded so they will be marked with Bold: in front of those issues.

Zatanna & Dr Fate
Zatanna and Dr Fate don’t have the same history in the DCU canon as they do in the YJ verse.  In fact, Dr Fate has an entirely different set of hosts in the DCU as opposed to the YJ verse.
So here is a short collection of all the times that she has interacted with Dr Fate in DCU canon (if I missed any, let me know, if you want to know more about the various hosts in the comics, check out this post):
The first we ever got to see Zatanna and Dr Fate interact was during a JLA/JSA crossover in Justice League of America #100:
Tumblr media
This comic was in celebration of the 100th issue milestone of JL and the plot revolved around the JLA and JSA splitting up in various teams up rescue the Seven Soldiers of Victory who have been scattered throughout space and time after their last adventure.
Not much interaction between them in subsequent JLA/JSA crossovers but we did get this great spread by George Perez in Justice League of America Vol 1 #195 in which Zatanna is shown opposite to Dr Fate as their team’s respective magic user:
Tumblr media
Then during the annual JLA/JSA team ups (specifically Justice League of America Vol 1 #195), she can be seen chit chatting with Dr Fate. Up until this point there has only been one Dr Fate and it was Kent Nelson:
Tumblr media
Sadly, we never got to see her interact with Inza Nelson Fate:
Edit: I just learned that she did interact with Inza Nelson’s Dr Fate in Spectre Vol 3 #17 during a story arc where the Spectre had snapped and was trying to pass judgement on all of humanity.  Zee, Inza and Etrigan were all part of group gathered by the Stranger to stop the Spectre. To make things more complicated, Eclipso has possessed Spectre:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Though to my knowledge, Zee has never met the kind of creepy and utterly bizarre Eric/Linda Strauss incarnation:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Later, in the 90′s, we got an edgier version of Dr Fate or Fate as he was called, whose real name was Jared Stevens who was ex mercenary who discovered the helmet of Fate and he melted it down so he can shape it into a knife because *that* is what real men do. /sarcasm
He also didn’t wear the classic Dr Fate costume, instead he dressed like your typical edgy 90′s hero with a long trench coat or leather jacket with bits of armors and course tattoos:
Tumblr media
Somehow he scored an ongoing title called Fate and after that was cancelled he got a second title called Book of Fate.   His first ongoing, even scored a short lived spin off title called Scare Tactics, as far as solo’s goes, Jared certainly had better luck than any other Dr Fate’s that came before and after him.
Fate #10 was notable because it had Zatanna on the cover and she’s essentially the co lead of the story.
The plot of the issue involves Jared Stevens on the run after being framed for a plane explosion.  So Jared is on the run and looking for a place to hide which leads him to this venue where Zatanna is performing under the pseudonym ‘Ms Katonic’. Prior to going on stage, she seemed nervous and unsure of herself and not her usual bubbly confident self.
The show goes wrong (as they usually do) when they are attacked by a cult called the Firebringers whose leader Tyson believes that there is a truer reality than the one we see now and commits ritual sacrifice  in order to reach his goal.
After getting aquainted with Jared, Zee takes on the villain Strega and we learn why Zatanna isn’t being her usual self:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Afterwards, we’re introduced to  Evan Fulcanelli whom Zatanna describes as her father’s oldest friend. Evan is an alchemist, either he was named after the real life French alchemist Fulcanelli  or he is the real deal himself:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Later in the issue, Fulcanelli sacrifices himself fighting Strega who wants the secret of his alchemy. Notably Zatanna calls him uncle and Fulcanelli calls her ‘niece’:
Tumblr media
Could it be just an affection description of their relationship or could Fulcanelli actually be Zatara’s brother by blood. In that case, is he Zachary Zatara’s father and that’s why Zachary’s magic doesn’t work on organics? Because his father is an alchemist?
At the end of the issue, Zatanna and Jared go out on a date although she turns down the possibility of going back to his place:
Tumblr media
She later appeared in Fate #14 on the last page alongside Alan Scott and the Phantom Stranger to recruit Jared for the Underworlds Unleashed event:
Tumblr media
Jared is often bemaoned for being representative of the 90′s extreme Dr Fate but some of his stories were actually quite descent.  Especially the Keith Giffen stuff.
In Fate #20 he accidentally stumbles into her dressing room whilst she was changing as he was meeting one magical character after another looking for advice and she reacts exactly as any woman would in that kind of situation:
Tumblr media
Later we see her interacting with the Hector Hall incarnation of Dr Fate in JLA/JSA: Secret Files & Origins:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The ‘cold shiver’ would be followed up in the ‘JLA/JSA: Virtue and Vice’ crossover.
I find it funny how Hector just slaps on the helmet when he hears Zatanna coming downstairs.  Given his history and personality, I can only imagine he is thinking of his missing wife whilst making this face:
Tumblr media
To my knowledge Zatanna didn’t get to meet the Kent V Nelson incarnation of Dr Fate. She also wasn’t part of the Helmet of Fate series of one shots when the helmet sought out various established DC characters as it’s hosts.
She does have an established friendship with the Khalid Nassour incarnation of Dr Fate and they interacted in JLD Vol 2′s Annual #1:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
and even served as his mentor in YJ S4.
Tumblr media
In the YJ verse, she is time sharing the helmet of Fate between herself and her students. In many ways, she and her father are the Dr Fate of Earth 16.
The comics don’t don’t really mix the two. Largely because the Zatara’s and Dr Fate’s are two different ‘flavors’ of magic. They both have their own thing going on.  Zatara’s are performers, more light hearted with added bits of drama and the occasional foray into the dark side of magic. Dr Fate is a much darker, more horror based character who deals with faustian bargains, arrested development, co dependant relationship and the psychological toll of magic. One is about the lighter side of magic and wish fulfillment whilst the other represents the darker side of it.

Young Justice reading order 👀
Yeah! This one's pretty simple. If you just read straight down the bolded comics, you're good.
Optionally, you can start with the first meetings between the future members. I've only read some of these, but it's:
Robin Plus Impulse #1
WF3: World's Finest Three (Superboy/Robin) #1-2
Superboy and the Ravers #7 - Kon and Bart
Impulse #28, #41 - Bart and Cissie
And then we get into the actual Young Justice content:
Young Justice: The Secret #1 (1998)
JLA: World Without Grown-Ups #1-2 (1998)
Young Justice vol 1 (1999) #1-2
optional DC One Million tie-in: Young Justice #1,000,000
Young Justice #3-4
Secret Origins 80-Page Giant #1 (1998)
Young Justice: Secret Files and Origins #1 (1999)
Young Justice #5-7
Young Justice 80-Page Giant (1999)
Young Justice #8-10
Young Justice Special #1 - tie-in to No Man's Land
Young Justice #11
Heck's Angels crossover: Young Justice #12 / Supergirl vol 4 #36 / Young Justice #13 / Supergirl #37
Young Justice #14 - tie-in to Day of Judgement
Young Justice #15-19
Young Justice had its own event, Sins of Youth, with a bunch of oneshots for various characters. Honestly just pick the ones for characters you're invested in:
Young Justice: Sins of Youth #1
Superboy vol 4 #74
Young Justice: Sins of Youth Secret Files and Origins
Sins of Youth: JLA, Jr. #1
Sins of Youth: Aquaboy and Lagoon Man #1
Sins of Youth: Batboy and Robin #1
Sins of Youth: Kid Flash and Impulse #1
Sins of Youth: Starwoman and the JSA, Jr. #1
Sins of Youth: Superman, Jr. and Superboy, Sr. #1
Sins of Youth: Wonder Girls #1
Sins of Youth: Secret and Deadboy #1
Young Justice: Sins of Youth #2
And then we finish up the series (with a couple extra notes to keep you up to date on the solos):
Young Justice #20-34
Our Worlds at War tie-ins: Young Justice: Our Worlds at War #1 / optional Superboy #89-90 / Young Justice #35-36 / Impulse #77 / optional Superboy #91 / Young Justice #37
Young Justice #38 - tie-in to Joker: Last Laugh
Young Justice #39-44
World Without Young Justice: Impulse #85 / Robin #101 / Superboy #99 / Young Justice #45
optional Impulse #86
Young Justice #46-55
The team ended with Titans/Young Justice: Graduation Day #1-3. At that point, half the members faded into the background and the other half moves over to Teen Titans vol 3, found over in my Titans reading order.

What do you mean alan is infected by the star heart?
sorry for the wait i think you sent this ask literally right after i left for my cruise but i'm BACK and READY
basically more or less that the starheart over the years has come to increase in power and strength to the point it's gradually taken over alan's entire being until he became the starheart itself.
the starheart itself is shown on more than one occasion to be it's own entity, arguably with a purpose and desires beyond alan's own.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
for instance, in green lantern (1960) #110 when alan calls upon the starheart for answers as to why he survived an attack without remembering how and why the ring has been failing him as of late-- because the starheart has been controlling how alan could use it!
Tumblr media
in young all stars #9 it's revealed the starheart can and will just full on take control of alan when need be to fulfill it's own ends! and wipe his mind while he's at it!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
then, of course, we have green lantern corps quarterly #4 which has alan being killed by solomon grundy, only to be revived by the power of the starheart when it takes him over and fuses with him...
Tumblr media Tumblr media
...where in the very next issue, it's shown to have the consequence of forcibly de-aging alan by decades while also increasing his power by untold amounts!
Tumblr media
in green lantern corps quarterly #7 becomes personified and brought to life accidentally and uhhh isn't exactly the nicest thing out there
Tumblr media Tumblr media
THEN in green lantern (1990) #110 we have the power of the starheart threatening to consume alan to the point where he fully believes he's going to die and intends to let it happen before anyone gets hurt!
it can generally be considering that while it is a slow build, the "possession" of alan by the starheart can definitely be pinpointed as the moment it fuses with him to save his life. following that, during his period as sentinel, alan requires neither a ring nor battery. he is the starheart, but the extent of such isn't fully realized until later when he get's impaled in the chest in JSA (1999) #19 and i've reached my pic limit but instead of blood he just leaking literal flames from his chest wound and then further along in JLA/JSA: Secret Files and Origins (2003) it's confirmed that alan... more or less is the starheart, now. his body is the green flame, and for all intents and purposes he might as well be an extremely elaborate construct and it's debated whether or not he's even human anymore. he looks older or younger at any given moment because that's how he thinks he should look. fuckt up body horror to the extreme.
long story sort, a long and slow infection it may be, an infection it still is. in my opinion, it's everything a proper parallax story could be. the power of the starheart has only been growing since the beginning, and alan really has no choice in the matter anymore.
this is slightly rambling but feel free to send more asks if you need clarification on anything

With Jared’s return in Infinite Frontier (2021) #4, I thought it was time to finally put together a proper reading list that includes all his appearance in some capacity. So, without further ado:
VITAL
The Book of Fate (1997) #1-12 - miniseries by Keith Giffen & Ron Wagner. While technically acting as a reboot of the earlier Fate series, it is almost certainly the best introduction to the character as a down-on-his-luck petty thief conned into stealing the artifacts of Doctor Fate and finding himself chosen as an agent of true balance. It’s a compelling, humours series built on a heavy subtext of social class dynamics filled with many familiar faces from DC’s magic side.
Batman: Shadow of the Bat (1992) #69-70 - Jared’s singular appearance in a mainstream title but an absolutely delightful one. When signs of some incoming occult apocalypse start appearing all over Gotham, Batman is aided by the man called Fate, now having come into his own as a reality repairman.
Scare Tactics (1996) #8 - Tactics as a whole is a fantastic miniseries starring Jared’s best friend, Arnold Burnsteel, as an unwilling father figure/manager to a band of teenage monsters (two of which are a gay werewolf & a lesbian/bisexual vampire!) but issue #8 specifically picks up where The Book of Fate #6 left off as part of the ‘Convergence’ crossover.
The backups in Impulse Plus (1997) #1, Superboy Plus (1997) #2, Catwoman Plus (1997) #1, Robin Plus (1997) #2 - The backups, read in that order, tell the origins of the Scare Tactics band but also feature Jared & Arnold freeing the kids from a facility known as the R-Complex.
The L.A.W. (Living Assault Weapons) (1999) #1 - Jared’s last appearance before his untimely death but firmly worth reading for the glimpses of him in the reality repairman role.
OPTIONAL
Fate (1994) #0-22 - The original post-Zero Hour series that introduced Jared Stevens as Fate. While a very enjoyable read, it suffers greatly from some of the stereotypes of nineties ‘edgy’ writing and subpar art. Great for a more in-depth look at Jared and Arnold’s friendship and definitely the first stop in the search for more Fate content after the above but not the most gripping introduction.
Underworld Unleashed: Hell’s Sentinel (1995) #1 - Coincidentally one of my favourite Alan Scott stories, it’s also the first time Jared teams up with The Conclave (Sentinel, Phantom Stranger, Etrigan, The Spectre, etc).
More Weird Mystery Tales (1997) #1 - A promo comic for The Book of Fate (1997) featuring a fun little story of Jared meeting The Challengers of the Unknown.
JSA Secret Files (1999) #1 and JSA (1999) #1, #47-48, #58, #63 - The prelude to Jared’s death, the event itself & consequences. Arguably out of character in many ways, these mark Jared’s last major appearances for a good long while.
MODERN
The Multiversity (2014) #2 - In present day, Jared Stevens reappeared as Fate on Earth 13. He’s effectively retained all aspects of his original appearance, with the sole exception of the fact that he’s now part of the League of Shadows with Superdemon, Hellblazer, Annataz, etc.
Superman (2016) #15 - Jared appears as part of the League of Shadows.
DC’s Very Merry Multiverse (2020) #1 - Jared briefly appears in the Earth 13 story.
Infinite Frontier (2021) #4 - Jared’s first major appearance in the modern era happens at the end of the issue, seemingly as a member of Injustice Incarnate. It will most likely be followed up on in Infinite Frontier (2021) #5-6, as he’s even on the cover of the latter.
ASSORTED CAMEOS
Guy Gardner: Warrior (1992) #29
Underworld Unleashed (1995) #3
JLA in Crisis Secret Files (1998) #1

Dick and Tim – brothers in arms
Tumblr media
So I got this ask. And it’s a good thing I got it the first night of my summer vacation, and the weather hasn't been great ;-)
Tumblr media
Once I started digging for comics with both Tim and Dick, I found several that I've never read. I got the impression Anonymous would like a complete list, so I just kept going. But this means I don't know if they even interact in some of the books, or if they make "blink and you miss it" guest appearances.
I'm sorry if they, by any chance, was asking for reading recommendations for good Dick and Tim moments and not The Complete List... Looking at the number of comics here that I haven't read/can't remember, I'm not really qualified to answer that. But if I had to try, I would mention:
A Lonely Place of Dying
The New Titans #65
All issues of Nightwing vol 2 with Robin as a guest star, including Nightwing Annual #1 but excluding Annual # 2.
Showcase '93 #11-12
Knightfall Prodigal

Bruce Wayne – Murderer and Fugitive

Batman: Gotham Knights # 8-11, 45

I'm going to skip post-Flashpoint because, well, there's hardly anything there. The worst thing with Flashpoint/New 52, in my opinion, was that it destroyed relationships between characters who used to be family, but ended up hardly knowing or even liking each other. :-(

Detective Comics #975. By James Tynion IV, art Álvaro Martínez and Raúl Fernández.
The only panel worth mentioning with Dick and Tim is from DC #975. Yes, it's sad – one of the best brotherly relationships in DC turned into dust. Here's to hoping future writers will pick up on their wonderful dynamic at some time.
(The pictures in the header are from: Red Robin #12, Young Justice vol 1 #22, Showcase ‘93 #12, Batman #441, Nightwing vol 2 #6, 25.)

Helena played a really big role in No Man’s Land, and while Bruce wasn’t going out as Batman she took on the role of the Bat. During this for the most part she was basically pulling double shifts as both Huntress and the Bat and generally being an absolute legend
