what exactly is arthur's criteria when choosing someone to knight? cause it's looking more and more like SPECIAL OFFER: stab morgana in the back and get a FREE SPOT as one of the knights of camelot, effective immediately!
like, with mordred, he'd never even seen the guy FIGHT. he just learned that he quite literally stabbed morgana in the back before she had a chance to kill arthur and he was like YOU'RE HIRED!
#do we think he'd knight me if i stabbed morgana in the back too#jk i'd never do that#arthur please clarify your knighting criteria#stabbing morgana shouldn't be a prerequisite to becoming a knight imho#bro adopted mordred as soon as he heard he'd stabbed his sister he was like THAT'S MY BOY!#merlin#bbc merlin#morgana pendragon#arthur pendragon#mordred

ngl this would be a really good way to circumvent the issues canon would have with trying to say why arthur’s finally returning after centuries of different catastrophes.
but also rip my heart, “albion’s greatest need” equals merlin giving up on arthur and magic fading because the immortal merlin has given up and is now fading too because merlin is magic and magic is merlin
my favourite merlin hc of mine is that arthur will only return when merlin gives up on the idea of him doing so. That when merlin gives up on him coming back, his magic starts to fade with his hope and that the danger albion faces that requires the king to return isnt world wars or global pandemics, its when the world loses its magic.
#albion’s greatest need is the loss of magic and the loss of merlin#arthur comes back with his perfect face ready to save merlin#uhh i mean albion#jk#arthur comes back and finally says fuck albion#fuck camelot#i came back for merlin#albion’s greatest need is my greatest need#merlin#merlin bbc#arthur pendragon#prince arthur#king arthur#merthur#merthur hc#merlin hc#merlins his own downfall#nothing new

merlin reboot idea except this time the main character is arthur and the show is called arthur
jk not that arthur, lol. anyway the pilot opens with an asmr inducing first scene of an unnamed protagonist emerging from a morning workout in the pool. as we see him get ready for the day, we hear faint whispers of a name, one we can’t quite understand, but he seems to recognize. he turns around but no one is there, only the audience sees a brief glimpse of a pale face with dark hair spread out around it in the reflection of the water. we follow him as he gets ready, but we never get a glimpse of his face. the seconds and music build up as he finishes his routine and heads to the university he teaches at. the keychain in his hands shines like the blade of a sword, and the hat he wears rests on his hair like a crown. we see his students greet him and learn he’s a bit of a favorite professor. the big reveal comes when he’s about to enter his office. the camera pans to the placard on the wall, which reads
penn drake, associate professor of medieval english and arthurian literature
the camera follows him inside, rises, and there surrounded by books and iconography of legends from long ago, the face of arthur pendragon in modern garb stares back to the shock of the audience. this story is not about a young boy discovering magic in a kingdom that persecutes it, but of a man plagued by dreams of the legends he studies, haunted by the face of a man he has never met, and sent on a quest to restore magic to the world
we’ve always assumed that merlin would be at arthur’s side at the time of his return, that he would find him, but what if arthur is reborn and spends the next 40 years of his life searching for a purpose? what if the purpose arrives when albion’s need is greatest—when merlin has all but given up, unaware that somewhere out there resides the king of legend, the king he swore himself to, the king he’s been searching for all this time.
call the show pendragon.

I’m looking for a book with queer characters (queerness doesn’t have to be a big topic in a book) that’s… cozy?
I know I’m being kind of unspecific 😅 but I’ll try here; basically what I am looking for is a either mystery/romance with mystery elements or fairy tale/fantasy/magical realism (or mix of those, even better) that
- doesn’t rely on heavy political intrigue
- isn’t focused on opression or social injustice as main themes (queerphobia mentions are fine as long as it isn’t “historical gay romance where the tragic part is that we’re gay and can’t be togheter because of it not being socially acceptable” )
- isn’t fast paced action- adventure, epic fantasy, tense enemies-to-lovers whirlwind romance, political intigue etc.
I know I have written „cozy” but that doesn’t mean it can’t be a murder mystery or has to be without any kind of violence, I mainly meant the setting or the pacing of the book.
Highly preferable, but not a must:
- supernatural/folk/fairy tale elements
- adult (non-teenager) male/non-binary main character(s)
- set in smaller city/countryside/wilderness/village/seaside etc.
Examples of books that for me fit this profile and I’m looking for similar vibes :
Silver in The Wood + Drowned Country by Emily Tesh, A Heart Of Stone by Johannes T. Evans, some stuff by E.E. Ottoman, Peter Darling by Austin Chant (I know all of those are romances, but what I am looking for doesn’t have to be)
I’m very sorry if that was too convoluted and thanks for considering my ask 😅
I'm intrigued that you haven't mentioned The House in the Cerulean Sea or any other TJ Klune, so I'll mention it here, though I imagine you know it's a good fit for what you're seeking. I will add Til Death Do Us Bard by Rose Black, Baker Thief by Claudie Arseneault, The Faerie Hounds of York by Arden Powell, and Sea Lover by JK Pendragon. I also recommend checking out the Kraken Collective; I feel like they have a lot of work (some included here) that is very much your vibe!

This morning I was thinking about Merlin, because of course I was. But then I was also thinking about Love Between Fairy and Devil, because of course I was. And I was thinking about Shang Que, he’s Dongfang Qingcang’s manservant/henchmen/bodyguard/best friend thing. He’s also a dragon. And I was thinking about this epic battle that Dongfang Qingcang basically died in before coming back to life 30,000 years later to immediately summon his dragon henchman dude.
And then I’m thinking about Merlin, who’s Arthur Pendragon’s manservant/henchmen/bodyguard/best friend thing. And he’s a dragonlord/dragon kin. (And in fanon this often means he can turn into a dragon). And obviously Arthur dies in this epic battle but is promised to rise again centuries later.
What if Merlin could turn into a dragon? What if that was a form he could casually assume? What if Arthur knew Merlin was a dragonlord? What if when Arthur rises 1500+ years after his death he summons Merlin to him? What if I wrote a fic about this? (Jk, i have too many wips atm)

Idk why my mind just decided to combined my favorite tv worlds and create non-existing fanfics that I seen obligated to keep updating...
Like for some reason Stiles Stilinski (Teen Wolf TV) resurrect Arthur Pendragon (Merlin BBC) and Eddie Diaz (9-1-1 FOX) discovered his son is a wizard and that his best friend has a whole world (Wizarding World - JK Rowling) that he never knew about.

i was going to compliment you & your amazing ability to set your mind to a task and learn a completely new skill within a few hours…and then i saw you defending andre agassi irl howl pendragon in the tags. jk but those tags actually made me laugh so hard i started coughing. i think everyone just loves you because you’re incredibly funny & have some of the most interesting stories (some of which i am so lucky to be part of). always one of my favourite people for obvious reasons! 💕
Never felt so backhanded (ha ha) in my life. Anyone can dream of being Howl Pendragon but only the real ones aspire to be as brave as Andre Agassi 😔 It is all about perspective.

You’ve answered most of them already but E (young wild and ed), H, L, R. Thanks!
Hi hello ty :)
E: If you wrote a sequel to [insert fic], what would it be about?
edd getting high a not panic inducing amount and bumpin ugglies with eddy
H: How would you describe your style?
RUSHED lol. gotta get to the juicy bits. im def more action and dialogue oriented, too impatient for lots of exposition or more flowery prose. i also try really hard to show, not tell, à la the robot devil's advice.
L: How many times do you usually revise your fic/chapter before posting?
not enough! like i said before, i'm very impatient lol. need to get the content out so i can get the dopamine hits from engagement. i do make sure to slowly read my fic out loud to myself at least once, tho. and i usually go back and read bits to myself frequently while writing. i'm not a first draft kind of person, it's all one draft that i'm continuously rereading and editing while writing.
R: Are there any writers (fanfic or otherwise) you consider an influence?
D.J. MacHale (specifically his Pendragon series) and, for better or worse, James Patterson ( specifically how he writes Maximum Ride.) I devoured those books when I was a kid so they definitely inform how I write today. also, loath i am to admit it, there's probably some jk rowling in my writing too, considering how many times i read and reread the harry potter books as a kid. now that i think about it, all my favorite book series as a kid were about teenagers fighting against fascism.
as for fanfic authors, silentwalrus on ao3 is a huge inspiration and someone i aspire to write like.
also i really can't not mention Takumi Miyajima when talking about writing. Tales of Symphonia is my favorite game of all time, and when dabbling with ideas for original fiction, ToS's plot and story themes are a HUGE inspiration.

[REVIEW] J.K. Pendragon’s “Witch, Cat, and Cobb”
RATE: ☆☆☆☆
Reading this book felt like a soft blanket during a chilly weather: it was cute and dreamy with its fantasy setting, a hopeful story with a Ghibli feeling. And it involves LGBTQ+ themes! There are lesbian and transgender characters and while those identities are significant to the storyline and plot, they aren’t used as character traits, but aspects of multifaceted people.
As a transgender lesbian, I felt like I could finally exist in fantastic stories with magic and that people like me could, too, be princesses like the Disney ones. I also practice witchcraft and am a big cottagecore enthusiast, so seeing a trans lesbian witch living her dream life in a cottage was very much... well. Meaningful, to me.
Now, about the most technical aspects: the main romance felt a bit rushed. I feel kind of a hypocrite saying that, as many of my relationships started less than a week after I knew my partners, but although it was rushed, it wouldn’t feel like it. A few more chapters with interactions between Brean and Mel would’ve helped the reader to see that, while it hadn’t been long since they met, they felt like they’d known each other forever. That was nailed near the end, by the second half of the book, but I would’ve liked to see the transition, the process of them falling in love. One thing that also bugged me was the ambiguous age difference: Brean’s age isn’t introduced to us, and Mel says, at some point, that she’s probably old enough to be her grandma, and it’s implied that Brean was just at the age to get married, which in monarchy settings is around 16-18.
It would’ve been more enjoyable of a book if this detail had been explicitly talked about, introducing Brean as someone who tried to push the wedding away for years and introducing her as someone in her mid-20s, with Mel at her mid-30s. This aspect of the book made me a bit uncomfortable, but I decided to go on because a) this plot is something I’ve unconsciously wanted for a while and b) I’d already read a lot of the book and wanted to write this review for NetGalley, which was where I got this ARC.
To finish this review, I’d say that if you’re comfortable with the criticism above and you’re LGBTQ+, then you really should read it. There’s witchcraft, a lesbian princess, a witch and a prince swapping bodies and a cute, magical cottage.
