Familiar Master (Pathfinder Second Edition Archetype)
Tumblr media
(art by David Lopez on Artstation)
The familiar is a classic companion for not just magically-inclined characters, but also those that benefit from having a small critter that helps them out.
However, there are some who demonstrate a talent for raising, training, and/or bonding with familiars of exceptional skill and ability, which is the focus of today’s entry!
These so-called familiar masters can certainly be found among the various familiar-having classes in the game, but it also provides an opportunity for classes that normally do not have the option for familiars to have one!
In this way, this archetype is a reflection not just of the various spellcasting archetypes from First Edition that empowered their familiar, but also the archetypes that gave familiars to other classes, with a minor element in some of the archetypes that altered the familiar themselves.
Whether they are a druid, witch or wizard with an especially impressive familiar or a charming swashbuckler with a clever pet, these figures are defined by their connection to another being, which offers a lot of opportunity for both flavorful interaction and in-game utility, which we’ll see below.
The dedication feat for this archetype is fairly simple, either granting a familiar if you do not have one, or enhancing a pre-existing familiar if your class, ancestry, or some other source grants one!
Those that do not automatically get an enhanced familiar can gain one later, of course.
Familiar Masters that are also spellcasters learn to use their link with their familiar as a conduit for their magic, letting their familiar be the source of magic, such as blasting foes with a cone or line from the familiar, the familiar throwing a fireball, and so on.
Oftentimes, a familiar can end up being the team’s mascot, and some masters tap into that shared bond to let the familiar have abilities that synergize with other members of the party.
While many familiar owners have access to powerful otherworldly or magical familiars (what 2e calls specific familiars but 1e calls improved familiars), but those masters that seek them out tend to find they cost less power to bond with one.
By way of shapechanging magic, quickly switching out familiars, or some other ability, these mystics can learn to alter their familiar’s abilities more often with a time-consuming ritual.
At the upper echelon of this archetype, the familiars of these are simply better and more able than other familiars.
A fairly simple archetype, this one has a nice mix of must-have abilities and optional abilities for the familiar enthusiast in you. Whether you’re a spellcaster seeking greater power from your bond-mate or a non-caster that wants to make use of having a tiny buddy of some kind, this archetype promises something nice to characters of any class.
It goes without saying that familiars should be seen as an opportunity for additional roleplay rather than something for the character to forget about most of the time until it’s useful. Now, admittedly, there are limits to that. Sometimes the familiar has to take a backseat to other NPCs or to the character themselves, but if you are playing with an archetype that specializes in familiars, you likely have an interest in playing with their interaction and character at least some of the time.
Truly pampered, Cobb the cat is supremely lazy. However, his lackadaisical behavior belies surprising power and skill when his master can convince him to help. He complains the whole time, though, making him a bit grating.
Slain and reanimated as mere fodder by a necromancer, This would have been the end for Kovus had it not been for his raven familiar, who successfully reminded him of his past and called him back to his now skeletal body. Now free, the two of them share an even greater bond than before.
It is said that in ancient times, powerful mages were able to bind dragon wyrmlings as familiars. Most consider this art now lost, with only the most ancient wyrms remembering those days, and their opinions of it vary. However, a dark cabal of mystics seeks to rediscover this power, and apply it in greater force, binding older dragons to their service. This conspiracy is what has driven Oblyxa, a young umbral dragon, to swallow her pride and approach the party for aid.

[REVIEW] J.K. Pendragon’s “Witch, Cat, and Cobb”
Tumblr media
RATE: ☆☆☆☆
Reading this book felt like a soft blanket during a chilly weather: it was cute and dreamy with its fantasy setting, a hopeful story with a Ghibli feeling. And it involves LGBTQ+ themes! There are lesbian and transgender characters and while those identities are significant to the storyline and plot, they aren’t used as character traits, but aspects of multifaceted people.
As a transgender lesbian, I felt like I could finally exist in fantastic stories with magic and that people like me could, too, be princesses like the Disney ones. I also practice witchcraft and am a big cottagecore enthusiast, so seeing a trans lesbian witch living her dream life in a cottage was very much... well. Meaningful, to me.
Now, about the most technical aspects: the main romance felt a bit rushed. I feel kind of a hypocrite saying that, as many of my relationships started less than a week after I knew my partners, but although it was rushed, it wouldn’t feel like it. A few more chapters with interactions between Brean and Mel would’ve helped the reader to see that, while it hadn’t been long since they met, they felt like they’d known each other forever. That was nailed near the end, by the second half of the book, but I would’ve liked to see the transition, the process of them falling in love. One thing that also bugged me was the ambiguous age difference: Brean’s age isn’t introduced to us, and Mel says, at some point, that she’s probably old enough to be her grandma, and it’s implied that Brean was just at the age to get married, which in monarchy settings is around 16-18.
It would’ve been more enjoyable of a book if this detail had been explicitly talked about, introducing Brean as someone who tried to push the wedding away for years and introducing her as someone in her mid-20s, with Mel at her mid-30s. This aspect of the book made me a bit uncomfortable, but I decided to go on because a) this plot is something I’ve unconsciously wanted for a while and b) I’d already read a lot of the book and wanted to write this review for NetGalley, which was where I got this ARC.
To finish this review, I’d say that if you’re comfortable with the criticism above and you’re LGBTQ+, then you really should read it. There’s witchcraft, a lesbian princess, a witch and a prince swapping bodies and a cute, magical cottage.

Witch, Cat, and Cobb by J. K. Pendragon
Genre: Fantasy
Goodreads Description: Destined for an arranged marriage she wants nothing to do with, Princess Breanwynne decides that the only option for escape is to run away. Upon the announcement of this plan, her trusted pet cat reveals he can talk by asking that she take him along. Listening to his suggestion to venture into the lair of the Swamp Witch proves to be a very bad idea, but Breanwynne would rather face a witch any day than be forced to marry a prince.

a sapphic lit primer 🌸
also known as, an opportunity to insist you read my favourites
if you’ve ever found yourself wanting to read more sapphic books, but not quite sure where to start, let this be the post for you! if you’re looking for even more sapphic books, i hope you find something in here too.
there are a few books on here i’ve not read, that i wanted to include to raise awareness of them, more than anything. those are marked by *. as such, you will probably also see a fair few more well known books and authors missed off (but i promise i know about them!).
this is not meant to be at all exhaustive! it’s a collection of sapphic books that i’ve read and would rec, meaning there are still tons more out there. & you can find some of those more at @sapphicreadsdb, readsrainbow (which i co-run with @tenderpotter), sapphiclitbot on twitter & my list of every sapphic book i’ve read.
as ever, this was meant to be a relatively short post. haha.
(i promise i did put links on this post, but for some reason those aren’t working on the blog page. dashboard version seems fine, i think.)

Random Inception Headcanon Time
Today’s Episode: Pumpkins! Who loves carving them? Who is a basic bitch for their pumpkin spice latte? Who bakes the best pie?
Dom is a pro at carving pumpkins. As a father of young children, it’s to be expected. His designs are usually simple and easy to recreate. He’s probably used the same ‘triangle eyes, big toothy smile’ design for several years in a row. He’ll also toast the seeds for a snack, though he’s the only one in the house who actually likes them. Not much of a baker though - he’ll buy his pumpkin pie from the store.
Arthur tries to act like he hates it. It is terribly messy, after all. And he’s always the one who has to clean up after the carving takes place (“goddammit, Eames! The rug!”). But his designs are complex and intricate, because he never half-asses anything. Big fan of pumpkin spice, though. He tried to be secretive about ordering a pumpkin spice latte once, but of course Eames found out, and still teases him about it every Fall.
Eames is a fan. Like a BIG fan. Of all things pumpkin. And he loves spending time carving them with his darling, even if Arthur complains the whole time. But he knows better than to try and be cute and playful by getting into a ‘pumpkin guts throwing fight.’ Last time they did that, Eames slept on the couch for an entire week. His designs are simple, but cool. One year, for their tenth Halloween together, he carved a perfect replica of Arthur’s face. The pumpkin may have eventually rotted, but the pictures he took of it live on forever.
Ariadne loves it, but in her own way. She never ever just does a face. She does more artistically creepy designs - witches whose glowing eyes seem to follow you, a snarling cat where the open space could double as a maze, a giant spider who feels like it could crawl towards you at any second, etc. No one is quite sure how she does it, and she ain’t gonna tell.
Yusuf doesn’t care. He did it once, at a friend’s house, and smelled like pumpkin guts for at least several days after. And he hates pumpkins. Also not a fan of stuff like pumpkin pie or pumpkin spice.
Saito prefers not to get his hands dirty. He won’t make a tradition out of it or anything, but every once in a while, he’ll draw up a simple design and pay someone else to carve it out. Rarely, very rarely, he’ll do it himself. But only in certain company (like around Cobb and the kids!). He doesn’t really cook, but makes a mean pumpkin spice hard cider.
Robert used to enjoy carving up pumpkins with his mother. She also made the best pumpkin pie in the world, if you were to ask him. After she died, though… well, I don’t think I need to say that things were a bit rough. But, now that he’s unshackled himself from his father’s legacy, Robert is getting back into the swing of things. He’s even taking to remaking his mom’s pie, though he’s putting his own twist on it. Friends say it’s perfect and delicious, but he’s not quite convinced yet.

Hello,do you know any wlw books with a trans girl as the love interest?
Of course! It does depend on what kind of genre you're looking for but I have a good range of options: Romance: - “Witch, Cat, and Cobb” by J.K. Pendragon Fantasy romance about a runaway princess and a trans witch, very studio Ghibli vibes. - “Silk & Steel” by Janine A. Southard This one is a wlw romance anthology that features quite a few trans characters and their romances. - “The Companion” by E.E. Ottoman Polyamorous historical romance where all the mcs are trans (m/f/f romance). - “Fake It” by Lily Seabrooke Classic contemporary fake dating romance between a restaurateur and a celebrity chef.
Fantasy: - “The Seep” by Chana Porter Follows a trans woman as a strange alien presence takes over the world and causes her girlfriend to leave her. - “The Broken Forest” by Megan Derr  Monster hunter and a witch fall in love while the hunter is on assignment. - “Robins in the Night” by Dajo Jago Robin hood retelling with a trans female lead and sapphic romance. Graphic Novel: “Bolero #1” by Wyatt Kennedy Follows a woman travelling through parallel universes to stay together with the girlfriend who left her. Horror: - “Thirteen Storeys” by Jonathan Sims Horror anthology by the writer of the Magnus Archives following a creepy apartment. - “The Worm and His Kings” by Hailey Piper Follows a trans woman as she searches for her missing girlfriend. The ones with links have been logged on my blog so they have longer descriptions and TWs attached. Hope you enjoy these!

I think this is either 12 or 13 of shitty headcanons, but I’ve had a few so let’s go lads!
-Cobb Vanth holds the Outer Rim mechanical bull record.
-Thrawn has a shirt that says “Once you go Mitth, you’ll never go sith” and it’s his most prized possession. Eli has a love hate relationship with it because it’s super comfy but good god why is Thrawn like this?!
-He tries to play it cool, but Obi-Wan has really bad separation anxiety, even more so post-Satine.
-I honestly can’t explain it but I feel like every single thought in Kallus’s head is a quote by Salem the cat from 90’s Sabrina the Teenage Witch.
-Kit Fisto owns Mambo no. 5 on karaoke night.
-Wolffe has a tennis ball that he just plays catch with when he’s stressed. He is horrifyingly accurate with it, as Cody learned when he dropped a bunch of paperwork off and ran on a particularly bad day. His helmet still has a dent in it.
-Anakin formed attachments to animals when he was small, so Obi-Wan literally went from an apartment full of plants to an apartment full of pets. When he eventually moved so Ahsoka and Anakin could live together, he got a Tooka and a Cactus so it felt like home.
-Cody wanders around in rugby shorts one time because his legs wrapped after an injury and it’s comfier, and everyone just melts because his thighs are godly. The other clones get competitive and keep walking round in shorts to prove they have big thighs too. Alpha-17 won, much to the benefit of Shaak-Ti’s wallet and to Obi-Wan’s chagrin.
-Jango Fett sang The Real Slim Shady at karaoke and the clones lost their minds in a good way.
-Anakin once overheard Obi-Wan talking to Kit and Quinlan about Qui-Gon’s ho-ish tendencies, and became convinced that Qui-Gon was his real dad. Obi-Wan was very stressed when he had to explain that that was not the case.
-Padme and Satine bonded over their hatred for padawan haircuts. And their Jedi. Said Jedi pretend they haven’t been drunk called by the pair and roasted.
-Thrawn has a pet ysalamir and she nearly gave Ar’alani a heart attack when she crawled into the Admirals bed. As much as she, Faro and Thrass try, they can’t prove Thrawn put the space lizard there. Thrawn totally put the lizard there.
It’s been a while, but enjoy the chaos pals n gals!

Book Recommendations: More Spooky Cozy Mysteries
The Spook in the Stacks by Eva Gates
Halloween in North Carolina’s Outer Banks becomes seriously tricky when librarian Lucy Richardson stumbles across something extra unusual in the rare books section: a dead body. Wealthy businessman Jay Ruddle is considering donating his extensive collection of North Carolina historical documents to the Bodie Island Lighthouse Library, but the competition for the collection is fierce. Unfortunately, while the library is hosting a lecture on ghostly legends, Jay becomes one of the dearly departed in the rare books section. Now, it’s up to Lucy Richardson and her fellow librarians to bone up on their detective skills and discover who is responsible for this wicked Halloween homicide. Meanwhile, very strange things are happening at the library - haunted horses are materializing in the marsh, the lights seem to have an eerie life of their own, and the tiny crew of a model ship appears to move around when no one is watching. Is Lucy at her wit’s end? Or can it be that the Bodie Island Lighthouse really is haunted?
This is the fourth volume in the “Lighthouse Library Mystery” series.
The Cat Who Talked to Ghosts by Lilian Jackson Braun
When Mrs. Cobb heard unearthly noises in the antique-filled farmhouse, she called Jim Qwilleran for help. But he was too late. It looked as if his kindly ex-housekeeper had been frightened to death - but by whom? Or what? Now Qwilleran’s moved into the historic farmhouse with his two cat companions - and Koko the Siamese is spooked. Is it a figment of feline imagination - or the clue to a murder in Moose County? And does Qwilleran have a ghost of a chance of solving this haunting mystery?
This is the tenth volume in “The Cat Who...” series.
Vampires, Bones, and Treacle Scones by Kaitlyn Dunnett
Halloween is approaching and newlywed Liss MacCrimmon Ruskin is tapped by the Moosetookalook Small Business Association to organize a community fundraiser. Liss throws herself into plans to turn an abandoned mansion into a “haunted house.”
There are already all kinds of scary stories about the old Chadwick place, which was most recently owned by Blackie O’Hare, a mob hit man from Boston. There are even rumors of buried treasure on the premises. Unfortunately, work on the haunted house is plagued by a series of minor mishaps and by the disappearance and reappearance of various objects. And then, to Liss’ horror, the fake skeleton she’s acquired for a special effect is replaced with a real body - and it’s someone she knows...
This is the seventh volume in the “Liss MacCrimmon Mysteries” series.
Wicked Witch Murder by Leslie Meier
With planning the town's annual Halloween Party, the drought wreaking havoc on her garden, and her brood of four children, Lucy Stone's got her hands full this fall. As the air turns crisp and the trees blaze red and gold in the tiny town of Tinker's Cove, Maine, a newcomer arrives who seems to suit the Halloween season. Diana Ravenscroft has just opened Solstice, a charming little shop featuring candles, crystals, jewelry, and psychic readings. But after an unnervingly accurate reading by Diana, Lucy starts to get more than a little spooked. Then there's the dead body Lucy finds, way up on one of the old logging roads behind her house. The deceased is identified as Malcolm Malebranche, a seemingly harmless magician who worked at children's birthday parties. When it turns out that Diana knew the murder victim, Ike Stoughton, a prominent local businessman, starts a campaign against Diana, blaming 'the witch' for everything from the unseasonal dry spell to his wife's illness and his pumpkins' lack of plumpness. But Lucy's not so sure that Ike himself is innocent. Still, as the town Halloween party approaches, Lucy's more concerned about the costume competition, pin-the-nose-on-the-pumpkin, and baking three dozen orange cupcakes and Beastly Bug cookies. But as the October moon rises, a killer plans a lethal celebration of his own and Lucy's the guest of honor.
This is the sixteenth volume in the “Lucy Stone” series.

Witch, Cat and Cobb - J. K. Pendragon
Witch, Cat and Cobb – J. K. Pendragon
When I spotted the cover of this book on NetGalley, I knew I had to have it. Thankfully, I’ve been blessed enough with an AR copy of this book in exchange of an honest review, and I’m more than happy to comply. Look at this cover. Isn’t it a beauty? I’m madly in love with the color choice. And look at that adorable cat! Witch, Cat, and Cobb by J. K. Pendragon is the story of princess…

Cabeswater Chronicles: Entry #1
[ March 20th, 2020 ]
Tumblr media
Warning: Picture-heavy!
IT’S GO TIME, Y’ALL!
Honestly, I have no idea how to go about starting this up. It’s been 84 years. I can’t remember how these used to be formatted. Here goes nothing!
Tumblr media
So, like the username of this blog suggests, I went full booknerd and named my island Cabeswater after the mystical forest from The Raven Cycle by Maggie Stiefvater, a personal favorite series of mine, with the intention of turning it into a magical, wild forest with me as the resident magician greywaren witch.
I didn’t get a particular picture of it, but my fruit is apples!
Tumblr media
My first villagers are Cobb...
Tumblr media
And Katt! And, won’t lie, I’m so thrilled to have a cat to start, even if Katt isn’t my favorite cat villager, I’m pleased all the same.
Tumblr media
I sped along with the intro bits given to me, eager to throw myself into the world... only to find out I’m confined to a small part of the island. Not fair!
(I also goofed on the hair color. I wanted gray, forgetting that the ash blonde was also an option and was not a lighter gray like it looked in the menu.)
Tumblr media
Cobb started off the day nicely by giving me a cap. Not sure what he’s trying to suggest by giving me a plain cap, but, hey. I’ll take it.
Tumblr media
It’s, ah-- It’s something. Maybe not a Look (TM), but... something.
Tumblr media
Katt, on the other hand, gave me a recipe for an adorable leaf umbrella! I didn’t get a picture of it, but I definitely made it!
Tumblr media
First catch of the day! And of the game! Big ol’ Olive Flounder. (I was expecting a Sea Bass, tbh.)
Tumblr media
I knocked out the 5,000 miles Nook wanted me to rack up pretty fast. It wasn’t hard at all, they make it fairly easy to get them!
Tumblr media
Purple is my favorite color, so I went with that option for the roof of my soon-to-be house.
Tumblr media
Ah, yeah. So, first balloon? Had a toilet in it. Fine by me, I’ll need one for my house eventually, but it wasn’t quite was I was expecting from my first balloon!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I stung my face while looking for tree branches, and Katt came through once again to give me a recipe for medicine! Cobb, on the other hand? well...
Tumblr media
Thanks, bud.
Tumblr media
And my second balloon of the day! What could it be, you ask? Well!
Tumblr media
... Yeah. Another toilet. I don’t know what the game’s trying to tell me, but rude.
Tumblr media
Into the night we go, I picked the game back up to do some night fishing and got this big boi. Startled the crap outta me, too.
Tumblr media
And I’m going to wrap my first entry up here! The following ones will likely be a similar length, but not of a single day. I just had a lot to do the first day, and I don’t think I’ll be doing quite as much in the following days.
We’ll see what happens.
Thanks for reading!
