while i was rereading the grandmaster of demonic cultivation again its about the two woman that came to lotus pear sisi and bi cao, there was something its about the reaction the cultivators had about there stories I was thinking what these two woman represent?
Hi! I've written a meta on Sisi before--she's one of the most important minor characters, I think.
I think her pairing with Bicao exists to make the reader ponder their own questions about what righteousness means and what justice is. After all, Sisi is a prostitute who openly admits to sleeping with married men, is coerced into assaulting someone to death, and is physically scarred. On the surface, she seems like someone society will and does indeed condemn.
But Sisi is the bravest, most righteous character in the entire story. She is not ashamed of what society and life have done to her; it's not like she had a choice in any of the above, after all, and while it's convenient to blame her, she had literally not a shred of freedom her entire life. At least not from whenever she entered the brothel, and we know from Jin Guangyao's comments about Meng Shi that the women there weren't there out of their own free will.
And yet, Sisi comes forward knowing people will condemn her purely to get justice for the other prostitutes who were coerced into this and then murdered. They were the ones not even brothels wanted anymore--too old, too sick, too ugly. The ones every last bit of society threw away, and she came to face scorn solely to get justice for them. She directly says this.
In contrast, Bicao came forward for money.
Tumblr media
Now, that's not inherently a bad thing. Bicao is a servant. She's part of society, unlike Sisi, but she's not well respected or anything like that. However, Bicao knew about Qin Su's mother being raped by Jin Guangshan, knew about the Jins being siblings, and said nothing--fair enough. There's nothing wrong with wanting to survive. Where we do get into dubious moral territory is when she directly goes to Qin Su and gives her the letter.
Tumblr media
Wei Wuxian himself notes that Qin Su had to have immense trust in Bicao to instantly believe its contents. She emphatically states that Bicao would never lie to her.
But Bicao also knew the likely outcome of her revealing this to Qin Su--that it endangered her, that she would probably be suicidal if not in danger from her husband, and Wei Wuxian directly says this as well. Bicao handed the letter to Qin Su for money knowing it would mean her misery, ostracization from society at best, and death at worst.
Tumblr media
Bicao's not a blood relative of Qin Su, of course, and there's a tendency to be like "oh, she's a servant, she owed her nothing." To a degree, sure, but also to another degree we're absolutely supposed to compare and contrast Bicao's treatment of Qin Su with Wei Wuxian's treatment of the Jiang family, and with of course Sisi's treatment of her sisters in the brothels (which we know was always the case from how she protected Meng Shi). Wei Wuxian was derided for his disrespect of the family that took him in despite being the son of a servant, yet gave literally everything, even his golden core, to try to help the Jiangs.
We're also supposed to compare and contrast Bicao and Sisi, both of whom reveal information damning the child they once protected. Bicao did it for money and was aware of what she was doing. Sisi did it for justice and, as far as we know, was not aware that Jin Guangyao was Meng Yao.
This itself of course leads to questioning Nie Huaisang's quest for justice and whether his justice is the same flavor as Sisi's. He freed her because she served his purpose, not out of any desire to free her because she is a human being who doesn't deserve to be locked up forever. He paid Bicao to sacrifice Qin Su, who was completely innocent. Yes, he couldn't have known everything that came from his actions but he definitely knew the likely possibilities (again, Wei Wuxian explicitly says this).
Tumblr media
These comparisons invite us to question justice and its link to power, to society, to what we owe one another, and to what it means to be righteous. These are good thematic comparisons wherein the point isn't even "Sisi good" and "Bicao bad" (which can be true even while acknowledging that Sisi is framed much more positively) but instead a multilayered approach designed to provoke questions rather than simple answers.

I think i need to explain why this line makes me go so feral
I think the "fine! I'll kill myself after I kill you" line from nie mingjue in chapter 49 permanently altered my brain chemistry and it has something to do with precisely how i got into the mdzs fandom space in the first place.
I've mentioned it a few times but i started watching the untamed in late 2019 right as it was blowing up everywhere and, likely due to a combination of undiagnosed adhd wrecking my ability to be interested in anything for longer than 4 seconds and me very much not being used to the specific style of acting, especially during fightscenes, i never finished it. The only concrete memory i have of it is seeing wen qing's face and meng ziyi completely short circuiting my little gay brain. I rememeber more of staring endlessly at pictures of her than I remember of the plot. Press F to pay respects.
Flash forward a few years and a friend recommends me a fic writer for an fma fic (the fic riter in question is metisket) and i like their stlye so much i decide to read other stuf they've written. Here we get to our prime suspect: "the one body problem" a genuinely hilarious fic where jingyi gets posessed by wei wuxian like a year before the plot happens and they become awkward brain buddies. 10/10 i loved it (and still do) even though i remember huasiang showing up in my fost reading and I, having fully forgotten his name, had no fucking clue what was going on. (Little did i know...)
Anyway flash forward ANOTHER year and I decide to reread that fic, and then the other untamed fic metisket wrote, a wen qing time travel fix it that's also real fun. And then i'm like. huh. that's fun. wonder if there's anything in their bookmarks.
And then, within 20 days, I had read approximately 350 fics. Many of them 100k+ words. I cannot stress enough how much this CONSUMED my brain's ability to do or think about anything else. I now think back to the early days of getting my adhd diagnosis and insisted that while i had pretty much all other symptoms, I did not get hyperfixations. Lol. Lmao, even.
I am mainly focused on wangxian and the junior quartet becuase they are my baby ducklings and i love them. I do come across some 3zun fics and I think huh... this is interesting. But the 3zun brainrot is LIGHT at this point.
The thing about reading more than 350 fanfics is that at some point you kind of piece the plot of the source material back together backwards. Especially because my favorite genre was time travel fix its, where characrers relive the whole plot and like to make allusiosn to all the ways everything went wrong last time.
Because I'm still squarely in my wangxian + juniors (plus a heavy dosis of yunmeng sibling reconciliation) corner here... the feelings on jin guangyao in my fandom corner are. different from where I'd end up soon after. He is my special little guy though, so I do kind of immediatley develop a fondness for him, and I approach my 3zun and early nieyao thoughts specifcially from the assumption that the widespread opinion is that nie mingjue is a fine good guy and jgy is the evil one (I have not seen the bad nmj takes yet. well... I am seeing DIFFERENT bad nmj takes but they're nice to him. In, like, the wrong way. With no solid undertanding of the inherent tragedy at the heart of him that makes him so blorbo to me. But still.) major reactions to the stairs scene as I see them on twitter are "girlboss! He should've kicked him harder 💅"
And the baby jgy apologist in me goes :/ me no likey. And at this point I am also actively seeking out metas and analysis posts so i'm seeing some better opinions than that and getting a halfway solid graps on the themes. wwx and jgy being foils becomes very obvious to me very quickly. So, with my curent understanding of the plot, I go... you know all you people who are like "god i wish nmj would have killed jgy sooner" it uhh... kinda sounds like he'd have died if he did that. If he'd killed him before meng yao had gone off to spy there is a very big chance they'd have lost the sunshot campaign and most of the main cast would be dead. If he'd killed him at the stairs that's... well that's killing your sworn brother, which by the canon's own admission is a universally reviled crime, and jin guangshan could easily take advantage of this by demanding nmj's head in retribution, since he already wanted to get rid of him anyway. He doesn't give a fuck about a-yao of course but he could pretend well enough that he does. And what leg would nmj have to stand on? The jin clan is canonically both willing and able to slaughter entire clans for the murder or attempted murder of the leader or his family, and nie mingjue is the kinda guy who'd immediately offer himself up if it meant the rest of his clan would be spared.
This combined with jin guangyao specifcally dying for his murder of nie mingjue, with huaisang basically not caring much about everything else he does and wanting to get revenge only for his brother, it gives nieyao a sort of mutual doomed soulmates feel. For either of them, killing the other would spell death for themselves. They either both die or they both live, one cannot live on without the order. That's crunchy. I like it.
The fire palace though? well, on meng yao's part there is a real argument that if he'd let nmj get killed immediatle instead of dragging it out he wouldn't hav ebeen able to get wrh alone and distracted enough to assasinate him, so tha'ts one half of the mutual doom coin, and if nmj had killed him during their fight there he's also done for. But after? Right before Xichen intervenes? I had no answer for that yet.
(You know what's coming. I did not)
It is at this point that i realize that if this is gona keep being A Thing then i need to read the source material before I catch fatal fanon poisoning. yes, I can piece together the plot and themes from seeing what stays consistent across fics and what are the author's own opinons. But I know just as well that sometimes fanon just agrees on shit that didn't happen and treats it like canon, and I have no way of knowing which is which. So I start reading the novel.
And of course, eventually I get to the empathy sequence. And remember, my nieyao "both live or both die" theory is heavy on my mind at this point, and the only stickler is that nmj could sort of have killed meng yao after the confrontation with wrh, still believing meng yao was actually working for him, and not a spy, and get off... not scott-free, Xichen won't be happy, but it's not gonna cost him his life.
And then I read THIS.
Tumblr media
Please Imagine dropping a whole block of pure elemental sodium into water. Except the sodium is this quote and the water is my poor little delicate brain. Not only is my theory right, it is ten times more unhinged than i thought it was.
And considering that Nie Mingjue does not seem like the kind of guy who'd consider something like a life debt to have an expiration date, and because after this he will link himself legally and socially to jin guangyao as family and declare that one among their brotherhood turning against the others is to be met with a painful death, I can no longer read the scene at the stairscase in jinlintai without the impression that he is still planning to die afterwards. Which, if you wanted to make that scene even more painful, this is a very efficient way of losing all your remaining hinges.
I think I'd have gone crazy about this line no matter what context I heard it in, but this one specifically? where I'm already obsessed with idea of nieyao's deaths being connected by the narrative and missing just this one piece and having it confirmed? out loud? from one of the characters himself? It's like giving cocaine to a baby.

If I had to map the characters of MDZS to the characters of TGCF-
Lan Wangi would be the ghost king
Wei Wuxian the Crown Prince Fallen God (these two mostly because I can’t imagine Wei Wuxian following Hua Cheng’s path I guess? These two might switch.)
But the main couple is also like that, because FengQing is now Jiang Cheng and Either Jiang Yanli or JZX. I haven’t decided which, but either way makes more sense for these to be WWX’s friends.
Jin Gaungyao is a mix of Ling Wen, by mostly taking her role, and Shi Wudu, by being the wind masters older brother.
And who is the wind master here? Why, it’s Mo Xuanyu! And his good friend, who is definitely not evil at all or planing the downfall of his brother, Nie Huaisang!
And that’s all I got. Discuss amongst yourselves lol

Whilst I was scrolling through the Jin Guangyao tag, I happened across this post. I'm going to dissect this post in order to highlight all the ways that OP appears to ignore the ways that joining another sect and leaving the Jin clan would be impossible.
Tumblr media
Could he truly "have left"? Jin Guangyao's fame is widespread due to his status as the slayer of Wen Ruohan. His departure would have attracted great attention and suspicion. Repeatedly, the novel reminds us of the gentry's tendency to create rumours on the basis of unfounded assumptions. Rumours attempting to ridicule the Jin clan would soon spread. Had he left, people's curiosity regarding the Jin clan and therefore Jin Guangshan would have increased exponentially.
Jin Guangshan's involvement with demonic cultivation (through Xue Yang for example) is why he would want to avoid such speculation. So, he would have killed Jin Guangyao. Or, ruined his life so greatly that nobody would dare hire him. Considering how easily people mock his parentage, even whilst he's part of the Jin Clan, his life could easily be ruined by Jin Gaungshan and any rumours about his departure. So leaving the Jin Clan would put him in great danger. If not death.
Also, OP says he "could have gotten a place with the Lans" which is also not possible. It would have been incredibly audacious of Lan Xichen to 'steal' Jin Guangshan's son. The Lan Clan's reputation could have been damaged. Do you think the elders would have allowed such a thing?
Jin Guangshan could easily demand they repay the Jin Clan for rebuilding the cloud recesses. Imagine the economic upheaval that would have caused. It just isn't feasible for the Lan Clan to take Jin Guangyao in without sustaining great injury.
Lan Xichen is also a diligent clan leader who pays great attention to his responsibilities. He wouldn't put Jin Gaungyao before his clan.
This also goes for any "other high ranking clan" because the only other clans on equal ground to the Jin Clan are the Yunmeng Jiang and the Qinghe Nie.
Nie Mingjue would rather Qi deviate than accept Jin Guangyao into his clan. And Jiang Wanyin has nothing binding him to Jin Guangyao. unlike Jin Guangshan is his father-in-law because of Jiang Yanli's marriage with Jin Zixuan. Accepting Jin Guangyao into another clan after he leaves the Jins would be akin to insulting Jin Guangshan very publicly which, btw, is not a great political decision, especially after a war.
And why should he be the one to join another Clan? Regardless of whether he's part of the Jin Clan, Jin Guangshan's orders are still heeded. Even if the blood isn't personally on Jin Gaungyao's palm (in the instance that he leaves the Jin clan) it'll still be shed! Jin Guangyao knows this best of all.
Joining another clan would mean leaving his livelihood to said clan. Jin Guangyao is well acquainted with the ways in which powerful men weaponize their power. He could easily be removed from the clan as Nie Mingjue did. He could easily be forced into committing atrocities as Jin Guangshan did. Why take such a risk for a clan leader who is likely to be just as abusive as his father?
Also, why does HE have to join another Clan? He became a war hero to join the Jin Clan and now he's supposed to leave? He's killed, people. Tortured people. And now he needs to leave? For what? Another powerful man who'll abuse him?
Why are we redacting the blame from Jin Guangshan and reallocating it to the guy who only ever knew inequality?

Drawn together by shared identities and caregiving preferences, Shuoyue changes Sizhui's life. Except… Shuoyue is Sizhui's Uncle Xichen, and eventually, the truth of who Sizhui is comes out and crashes down on the both of them. TL:DR: Sizhui Catfishes his Uncle Xichen, circa 2006-2008. Seventeen Minutes, Jin Gaungyao/Lan Sizhui (kinda), Rated E, 1.5K
The way of the Cloud Recesses is that a dominant must intimately understand what they are doing to their submissive. To understand, they must experience. It would be foolish not to accept a masterclass from Lianfang-zun, even if it means Sizhui's limits will be putty in Lianfang-zun's hands
Well Bred, 3zun/Qin Su, Rated E, 1.9K
The one where Qin Su gets fucked by her husband's beloved pony. And his boyfriend.
love is the voice under all silences, Xiyao, Rated E, 5.2K

Meng Yao rescues the first Jade of Lan and takes him into his home, becoming far more involved than ever anticipated.
strength and softness, Yu Ziyuan/Jiang Yanli, Rated E, 2.5K
Yanli has always been weak, but the truth of her weakness is a carefully guarded secret. It is not an easy life, yet with all of Yanli's secrets, she has one she treasures: there is a side of her mother that she is the only one in the world allowed to see. Or, the one where Yanli has a curse where she needs physical contact to live.
The Lemon House, Original, Nonbinary/Genderqueer, Rated E, 5.7K
A Day in the Life of a House Submissive for a Housing Cooperative in a BDSM AU setting. Wren’s second favorite thing about mornings is the satisfaction of giving its housemates a warm start to the morning. That their day will be a little nicer because of Wren. No matter how shitty its housemates’ days may be, Wren started them right. It will wait for them when they get home, bookmarking their days with warmth and affection.

I know everything else I post about is SVSSS, but I do have a MDZS au I’ve been thinking about for years lol
It’s an Encanto Au! Jin Ling is Mirabel, having no gift like the rest of his family.
His family of a lot of uncles and a lot of cousins. There are, of course, his mother Jiang Yanli, and her magical healing cooking. His uncle, and Yanli’s brother, Jiang Cheng, who controls the weather with his emotions. His other uncle, and Yanli’s other brother, Wei Wuxian, who can see the future. He disappeared ten years ago, and nobody is allowed to talk about him.
There’s his uncle Jin Gaungyao, who can hear everything that’s happening. And JGY’s son, Jin Rulan, who’s about to get his gift during his fifth birthday. And there’s his other, other uncle, Mo Xuanyu, who can transform into other people.
And there’s his perfect cousins, Lan Sizhui, who can summon flowers and is over all perfect. And Lan Jingyi, who is super strong. (They are probably cousins through WWX, but no one talks about that)
I never decided who Abuela is, because on one hand, the Yunmeng Trio is the triplets, so I feel like it has to be Madam Yu. But there are so many Jins here, so I feel like it needs to be Madam Jin? Of course, then it’s weird for JZX not to have any powers, since he’s the dad that married in. Never mind. It has to be Madam Yu. I have decided.
The background event, instead of a proposal, that everyone is panicked for, is the Lans’ coming to check on Lan Sizhui and Lan Jingyi, which has everyone stressed.
