R.I.P. Jimmy Weldon
We just word on the passing a couple of days ago of ventriloquist, voice-over artist, announcer, children’s host, and actor Jimmy Weldon (1923-2023), just two months shy of his centennial birthday. Weldon developed the voice of his duck companion Webster Webfoot on local radio in the ’40s. In the TV era he brought the character to lock kids television shows that he hosted at stations all over…

Requiscat in pace.
(I assume Weldon was the last of the great vocal talent from Hanna-Barbera's Golden Age, encompassing the period between its founding in 1957 and its moving to superhero cartoons in 1966, including, beyond doubt, Daws Butler, Don Messick, Mel Blanc, Jean Vanderpyl, Bea Benedaret, Leo DeLyon, Howard Melvin, John Stephenson, Paul Frees and Paul Winchell.)

Barbara “Lady Love” Mason (August 9, 1947) is a popular singer/songwriter and one of the true pioneers of Philly Soul, as she entered the music scene as a teenager. She was born in Philadelphia to a homemaker mother and a father who worked for the Philadelphia Water Department.
At the age of 12, she was the lead singer in groups she formed after winning local talent shows. She lived next door to Bill Oxendine, a member of the Larks who in turn introduced her to Weldon Arthur McDougal III, a record label executive. McDougal introduced her to Jimmy Bishop, a local DJ, and founder of Arctic Records. Bishop signed and released her debut single “Trouble Child” before she was 15.
In 1964, she released “Come to Me/Girls Have Feelings Too” which was a moderate success. In 1965, she recorded “Yes I’m Ready” which became her first hit, peaking at #2 on the Billboard R&B chart, #3 on the US Cash Box Top 100, and #5 on the US Billboard Hot 100. It ranked at #12 on the Canadian Top Singles chart.
“Sad, Sad Girl,” peaked at #12 on the Billboard chart, followed by “I Need Love” which peaked at #5. Her 1968 hit “Oh, How It Hurts” peaked at #11 on the Billboard chart. She released “Raindrops Keep Fallin’ on my Head/If You Knew Him Like I Do,” which peaked at #38 on the Billboard pop chart.
She released “Bed and Board,” which peaked at #24 on the Billboard chart, followed by “Give Me Your Love” which peaked at #9, and “Child of Tomorrow” which peaked at #79 on the Billboard R&B chart. Her two releases, “From His Woman to You” and “Shackin’ Up” peaked at #3 and #9 respectively on the Billboard R&B chart. “I Am Your Woman, She is Your Wife” peaked at #14.
She released two singles: “I Never Love the Same Way Twice” and “She’s Got Papers, But I Got the Man.” She formed her publishing company.
She was invited to sing at the Greek Theatre in Los Angeles. She began to do periodic performances. She released “Feeling Blue” and “The Soft Touch.”
She was still performing to sold-out audiences in 2016, she was part of a “Legends of Soul” concert, and in 2018 she headlined a “Forever Oldies Tour”. She was inducted into the Soul Music Hall of Fame. #africanhistory365 #africanexcellence
