Jiang Yanli's love for Wei Wuxian
It wasn’t Jiang Yanli’s job nor duty to protect Wei Wuxian from her mother, but her father's. Jiang Fengmian should be the one being held accountable on not doing enough for Wei Wuxian. Jiang Fengmian was a grown-up trained man, a cultivator, he was a sect leader and had power. Jiang Fengmian also was the one who brought Wei Wuxian in, he was the one who should’ve stood up for Wei Wuxian whenever his wife tried to abuse him physically or emotionally. He was the one who didn’t do enough, and the one whose duty was to protect his supposedly ward.
Jiang Yanli, on the other hand, was a physically weak girl who was always being berated and downplayed by her own mother, and she was only around three years older than Wei Wuxian. She was a kid too. It was definitely not her duty to protect him or stand up for him.
But she did.
She did try to protect him as much as she could till the end. She tried her best even when she didn’t have to because she wanted to, and she loved him as a little brother. She was the one who made him feel loved in his childhood, that’s why he loves her so much.
Also, I really think she protected him successfully. I don’t know why people expect her to be some kind of heroine or superwoman or want her to be one, but she doesn’t need to be that. Just loving him and demonstrating this love is enough. She just needs to be herself to make him happy, and making someone happy is a way on itself of protecting someone. She's more than enough.
Jiang Yanli didn’t fail, she gave Wei Wuxian all she could, and even died for him. It was her blood brother who failed. It was the mob who failed.
She loved him and made him happy, shouldn't that be enough?

the untamed is so fucked up like what if you were the brother of all time but in a cursed way. first your brother-in-law dies because your big sister loves you so much. then your big sister dies because she loves you so much. then your new big sister and little brother die because they love you so much. the only reason your og little brother doesn't die? because you died first. because you love him so much.

while reading the books, i remember wei wuxian’s relationship with jin ling hitting me especially hard. i was crying when the whole stabbing thing happened. but i truly adore what becomes of them and do you know why? because jin ling does something the others could never, something miraculous really––he actually unlearns the prejudice he’s been taught to hold against wei wuxian. he meets wwx, full of disdain, slowly learning about who wwx really is and it has nothing to do with wwx’s outward appearance. and when the truth is revealed, the internal warring for jin ling is plainly portrayed and even if he does give in to a hate intermingled with grief that he has internalised towards this one entity (wei wuxian was never a person in his mind, just the ‘killer’ of his parents, a phantom, before the events of the book happened), you can tell his heart has already turned, that it will keep turning and that’s what happens. you have jin ling, an orphaned child, who hated someone whom his mother loved dearly, because that man caused his parents’ death but it is such a commendable thing that wei wuxian was able to create a space in jin ling’s heart and jin ling was able to accept it. it’s the way both jin ling & jiang cheng blame the death of their parents on wwx but only the former was able to see wei wuxian clearly and actually forge a bond of love with him.
it’s the fact that if ANYONE in this story can actually rightfully hold a grudge against wei wuxian, it’s jin ling, but instead this teenager decides that wei wuxian is much too good and that having him as an uncle is lovely, after all.

Wei Wuxian: -anyways, and now we turn to this area, which is nothing suspicious-
Jin Zixuan: *was convinced to bring Yanli to check out the Burial Mounds by the most annoying set of Yunmeng siblings to ever exist* Why does that hut have a sign that says ‘Corpse Storage’?
Wei Wuxian: :) that’s Wen Ning’s hut :)
Jiang Yanli: Aww, that’s cute.
Jiang Cheng: lmaoooo
Jin Zixuan: *is wondering how Yanli hid her gremlin side from the world so much, these siblings are so annoying he’s gonna throw rocks at them* That… nice…

I don't like how the Untamed changed the events of nightless city as being AFTER the Wen Remnants had been killed instead of before. Because the insinuation for Wei Wuxian appearing there is that he's out for revenge for what they did. He is there to vent his very justifiable anger, but it's a huge difference to why Novel Wei Wuxian did it.
Novel Wei Wuxian showed up to there to talk. Even after hearing Jin Guangshan rile up the crowd to thirst for his blood and the Remnants, he still tried to talk. It was his last ditch to protect the Remnants without bloodshed. He showed up to see if the clans would keep their promise to the Wen siblings and he was right to do so because, as he expected, they weren't.
It's why it's so important that the clans shot the first arrow. That was the inciting incident to the proceeding fight between Wei Wuxian and the clans. He was there to talk, and instead, they proved once and for all that there was no reasoning with them. They wouldn't rest until he and the Remnants were dead.
He fought to protect the Remnants from them. It was a 100% selfless and justified move on his part. It's why it's ridiculous that the clans still had the audacity to seek retribution from him for their losses that night during the second siege. Its also an obvious way to show that the clans hadn't changed and that it's unsurprising that afterward they had no qualms in switching their attention to Jin Guangyao after all the revelations about him and Su She.

jiang yanli defended wei wuxian to anyone who dared to talk shit about him.
wei wuxian would rather say he died of natural causes than let wen ning think jiang cheng killed him.
jiang cheng was ready to make every excuse to the cultivation world for remaining associated with wei wuxian but wei wuxian wasn't going to let him be disgraced on his behalf.
jiang yanli traveled to the burial mounds herself just to give wei wuxian soup and show him her wedding dress.
jiang cheng kept chenqing in perfect condition.
jiang cheng hunted down every cultivator that could possibly be wei wuxian reincarnated but when wei wuxian got reincarnated he just let him go.
jiang yanli loved and protected both jiang cheng and wei wuxian in their broken family, making sure they stood up for each other instead of standing against each other.
jiang cheng would rather sacrifice his dogs and his golden than have to live without wei wuxian.
wei wuxian feels like he owes jiang cheng and jiang yanli his life, but they never wanted his life, they just wanted him.

Summary:
She tried to shake away any sad thought, this was supposed to be a merry reunion, after all. A-Xian had always been someone very especial to her. A solace of gentleness and kindness within a house so filled of grudges and hatred. She knew it was the same to him. Blood didn’t tie them, but they were undoubtedly family.
Jiang Yanli pays a visit to her A-Xian to catch up with him.
As I love Wei Wuxian and Jiang Yanli's bond so much, I suddenly felt inspired to write something about them and felt the need to share it.

Horrible thing to say but I think there's a real chance Jiang Yanli was both of her parents' least favorite child and knew it and just kinda. Had to go on with her life knowing that.
#mdzs#jiang yanli#yunmeng siblings#madam yu's favorite kid is jc. she doesn't. um. SHOW it in a very affirming way but he's clearly the one she's emotionally most invested in#jfm's favorite kid is wwx. is he even one of his kids? doesn't matter. he's the favorite#(madam yu does NOT see wwx as her child so he doesn't factor into the calculation for her.)#i think jfm's neglect of jc is talked about. mostly because the both jc and wwx are clearly aware of it and so it's mentioned in novel#but um... DO we see either of yanli's parents give much a shit about her? ever?#jfm doesn't even ask if she WANTS her engagement dissolved before doing so#also the reason stated by other characters for jfm not liking jc is that he's madam yu's child. you know who is ALSO madam yu's child?#i think jfm may find jc.. harder to get along with. but i also think whatever discomfort from his marriage he projects onto his kids#it also extends to yanli. it's just that he's not constantly REMINDED of yanli like he is jc#(because madam yu keeps yelling about it)#and so he just... doesn't think about her much at all#madam yu meanwhile treats yanli with this air of disappointment. she seems to resent that she's 'weak' and gentle and quiet#and that she cares so little about status so as to treat wwx like her little brother#i think yanli is just fundamenally so clearly... not the child either of her parents wanted. and it shows.#i'm slightly peeved fandom doesn't talk about this as much as they talk about the effects the jiang parents had on the two boys.#but to be fair to fandom the book doesn't either#which is probaly just danmei-typical misogyny. but to give a slightly more watsonian reason#i think the yunmeng bros are genuinely unaware of this. yanli is PERFECT how could her parents not love her?#(of course they notice something like zixuan's initial dislike of her but that's blatant.)#(vs the attitude of the jiang parents towards their daughter which seems to be mostly... disinterest and disappointment)
