Print of Humphreys enthroned after defeat of Jewish boxer Mendoza
Tumblr media

Child's Writing Exercises and Doodles, from Egypt, c. 1000-1200 CE: this was made by a child who was practicing Hebrew, creating doodles and scribbles on the page as they worked
Tumblr media
This writing fragment is nearly 1,000 years old, and it was made by a child who lived in Egypt during the Middle Ages. Several letters of the Hebrew alphabet are written on the page, probably as part of a writing exercise, but the child apparently got a little bored/distracted, as they also left a drawing of a camel (or possibly a person), a doodle that resembles a menorah, and an assortment of other scribbles on the page.
This is the work of a Jewish child from Fustat (Old Cairo), and it was preserved in the collection known as the Cairo Genizah Manuscripts. As the University of Cambridge Library explains:
For a thousand years, the Jewish community of Fustat placed their worn-out books and other writings in a storeroom (genizah) of the Ben Ezra Synagogue ... According to rabbinic law, once a holy book can no longer be used (because it is too old, or because its text is no longer relevant) it cannot be destroyed or casually discarded: texts containing the name of God should be buried or, if burial is not possible, placed in a genizah.
At least from the early 11th century, the Jews of Fustat ... reverently placed their old texts in the Genizah. Remarkably, however, they placed not only the expected religious works, such as Bibles, prayer books and compendia of Jewish law, but also what we would regard as secular works and everyday documents: shopping lists, marriage contracts, divorce deeds, pages from Arabic fables, works of Sufi and Shi'ite philosophy, medical books, magical amulets, business letters and accounts, and hundreds of letters: examples of practically every kind of written text produced by the Jewish communities of the Near East can now be found in the Genizah Collection, and it presents an unparalleled insight into the medieval Jewish world.

People are really starting to forget that Emily Willoughby is a Nazi. Her artistic talent is irrelevant to the fact that she's a eugenicist piece of shit. For reference, her PhD was just "white people are genetically predisposed to having a higher intelligence than people of color". She has never taken accountability and has continued to double down with the classic "sorry but that's just the truth". There are professional paleontologists on Facebook praising her. Why is she still allowed in these circles or anywhere in science? Why are her opinions still valued?
Her continued presence in these spaces puts people's complacency on full display. She throws people of color and Jews under the bus and the fact that she hasn't been fully shut out tells me a lot about our field.

But Ruth replied, “Do not urge me to leave you, to turn back and not follow you. For wherever you go, I will go; wherever you lodge, I will lodge; your people shall be my people, and your God my God.
Where you die, I will die, and there I will be buried. Thus and more may the LORD do to me if anything but death parts me from you.”
---
My first art centered around Judaism since I started my conversion process ahhh fuck I hope I got the Hebrew right, I'm still not too familiar with the alphabet so it moves around on me lmfao
but as a convert ofc Ruth is important and her story is fascinating to me; if anyone has recommendations on JEWISH resources about her would love to read
also ig christians can reblog this but lmfao idk what you could get out of it
Personally I like the interpretations of them being romantic but I tried to leave the art up for interpretation in general however you see them

Glasgolem, 2022
earlier this year i was honored to be asked to do the cover for issue #1 of Golem Zine, a series showcasing voices from lesser-known Jewish communities around the world. this first issue celebrated Jewish life & culture in Glasgow, and creating this cover involved a deep dive into the history of Glaswegian Jewish art & architecture.

Since my last post was quite sad, I want to share with you a recent organization I found that it quite heartwarming.
It’s called “rockets into roses.”
It takes rocket scrap metal from Hamas rockets that has landed in Israel, and creates some of the most beautiful art of it.
Tumblr media
I understand that some of these prices are quite high, and not everyone can afford them, but I thought I would just share of their art. See if anyone would want to take a look at them or knows someone who would.
Here’s their profile on Instagram.
Here’s their website.
And here’s a short video on what they do.
