Jesus experienced GROWTH—He did not just clothe Himself with human flesh—He literally became human, stripped Himself of all knowledge and physical powers, and started off as a helpless baby that needed to GROW. 👇 He needed to grow in physical abilities, in mental capacity, in social graces, and in spiritual wisdom. The very lessons He placed in the Word and works of God in nature—He was now being taught by His earthly mother as a child. He was homeschooled. His lessonbooks were the Scriptures and nature. He was learning about who He was by studying these lessonbooks Himself. As a child in Nazareth, a city that was filled with wickedness, Jesus rose above every temptation by shunning them and closing them off as much as He could and making use of His time in giving excellent service as a carpenter. He lived to bless people, and way before His 3-year public ministry, He was already doing God’s service in His immediate community by living a life that radiates God’s character of love to people surrounding Him. [Researching the brothers of Jesus] Snow day here in Northern Indiana. Working on the Carnival Sage graphic novel script. I’m researching the brothers of Jesus. James the Righteous (Probably author of James and leader of the Jerusalem Church) Joses, also called Joseph Simon (Eventual leader of the Jerusalem Church) Jude, also called Judas and Judah (Probably author of Jude. A twin? – I haven’t gone down that long Syrian road of research) Early church writings make research like this feel like searching for the holy grail. The problem is 1. The early church, even past Martin Luther, wanted to keep Mary’s perpetual virginity. 2. The blood family was a threat to Paul and Pauline Christianity. 3. These common names overlapped with disciple names!?! 4. And, most importantly the ancients loved legendary development, The church did this well into the medieval period, to every Bible story and personality. And, these stories did not stay on the margins, they were part of the art and liturgy of the church. I watched a sermon by John MacArthur discussing James. It was amazing, in 51 minutes, how little he addressed any real issues. Has anyone else studied the siblings (or if you are Catholic; the step-brothers, or cousins)? September 1 is the anniversary of Nazi Germany invading Poland in 1939 and the start of World War II. In the midst of this terrible war — the most deadly in history — the Nazis and their collaborators perpetrated the industrialized, mass murder of 6 million Jewish people. What we rarely consider is that a considerable number of Jews caught up in this genocide were Jews who believed that Jesus is the Messiah of Israel. Christ Church Jerusalem has commissioned a project to rediscover the names and stories of our brothers and sisters in Messiah who were murdered by the Nazis. CMJ historian Kelvin Crombie has been researching what the Nazis classified as “non-Aryan Christians” for two years.the Jewish Believers Holocaust Project. Concurrently, we have been digitizing glass slide photographs taken by the Jewish Christian community in Poland and Ukraine before and during the war. Synagoga et Ecclesia / Synagogue & Church A sculpture was recently installed at St. Joseph's University (in Philadelphia) called "Synagoga et Ecclesia in our Time," which transforms supercessionist and triumphalist medieval iconography. In medieval art, Synagoga and Ecclesia are female representations of Judaism and the Church, often found flanking cathedral doors. Synagoga appears invariably blindfolded (or her head bowed) and defeated. The new sculpture depicts Synagoga and Ecclesia as equals, looking to and learning from each others' texts. It was unveiled to commemorate the Catholic Church's Nostra Aetate (1965), which marked Catholicism's changed relationship with Judaism — a relationship reaffirmed by Pope Francis's Evangelii Gaudium (2014). Francis visited the sculpture on his recent visit to Philadelphia.

Stark was the CONTRAST between the officiating priest and Simeon and Anna—the former dedicated the baby Jesus as a poor, ordinary first-born infant. 👇 At the same time, the latter saw that this was the Promised Deliverer, and so they spoke words that revealed His actual mission. The former was blinded by outward appearances, while the Holy Spirit inspired the latter because they sought salvation from sin deep within their hearts. This same stark CONTRAST will be made even more evident as Jesus would live His life—the CONTRAST between those who embrace the principle of love in their lives and those who swear by the principle of anti-love or selfishness and self-centeredness. Even at the cross, the same CONTRAST between Christ’s love and Satan’s anti-love will be demonstrated. Just when everyone was down in the deepest dumps and felt the emptiness of their hearts real hard—that’s when God sent Jesus to be born on earth, the promised Deliverer. 👇 And God is right ON TIME! “God’s purposes know no haste or delay.” If the first chapter was the ‘biggest’ picture, and the second the ‘bigger,’ then this third chapter is the ‘big’ picture. We’re essentially zooming in and seeing the picture of the misery the people were experiencing at the “fullness of the time” when Jesus should come. People were at the very bottom of their spiritual and practical experience, many were possessed by demons, and many more were dissatisfied by religious forms and were so thirsting and hungering for an ultimate rescue. And while Jesus could have just come any time within human history, God, in His wisdom and providence, sent His Son to be infleshed right ON TIME. A failed expectation. Still, the religious leaders chose to NEGLECT these truths and instead cherish their own selfish ambitions of worldly greatness and national superiority. By one day’s NEGLECT of the presence of Jesus, Joseph and Mary went through an anxious search for Him for three long days. By our own NEGLECT of the presence of Jesus daily, we bring suffering to ourselves, anxiety to our future, and unrest for our souls.
