And if you do enjoy, I URGE you to like, reblog AND comment!!! It's so important to me as a writer.
MASTERLIST, TAG LIST
Drivin' on the right-side road He says I'm pretty wearin' his clothes And he's got hands that make Hell seem cold Feet on the dashboard, he's like a poem I wish I wrote I wish I wrote
Charles had a habit of taking everything lightly and making jokes to play off serious situations, something that could bother you at times.
The first time you met, for instance, was one of those times.
You were driving down the road of your little town and had to slam the brakes as to not run over the incredibly handsome, but incredibly stupid, boy that had just tried to cross the road.
You had honked at him and he looked up in surprise before immediately being pulled back by the hands of a red-headed girl. He broke out in a grin as you drove off with a scoff, internally cursing him.
The next time you saw him was only later that same day, surprisingly at your family friend’s, and the local butcher’s, shop.
You had walked in an immediately let out a sigh of annoyance, one of which he heard and turned around with that same grin plastered on his face.
“Well, if it isn’t the boy with a death wish,” you muttered, ignoring him and his friends to go up to the counter. Unluckily for you, Jenny was not there.
The boy scratched his neck bashfully. “Yeah, sorry ‘bout that. Forgot you lot drive on the right side of the road, which is technically the wrong side of the road. Just wasn’t looking.”
An eyebrow raised in his direction. English.
He stepped forward with a hand outstretched. “The name’s Charles. Pleased to meet you.”
You took it as a shiver ran up your spine, weirdly so cold to the touch he felt warm. It was the first time you managed to get a proper look at him, admiring his stylish clothes and sharp features. And his eyes were as warm as his hand was, deep swirling pools of darkness that seemed to emit nothing but light. You smiled back, introducing yourself.
“Pleasure. And this is Edwin, Crystal, and Niko,” he introduced his friends behind him, who all gave you a smile except for the uptight-looking Edwin.
“Well, I’ll let you guys get back to it,” you said, turning back to the counter as Jenny came out. You handed her the keys to the car with a wink. “Thanks for letting me borrow your car, Jenny. Told you I would return it without a scratch.”
She raised a doubtful eyebrow. “That is left to be seen, kiddo.”
You were about to turn around just when you caught the end of the other teenagers’ conversation. “Did you guys just say ‘Point No Point?” you asked and swivelled around to face them.
Niko nodded enthusiastically, briefly glancing at the boys. “Yeah, we’re going there for a—um, to meet someone there.”
“That’ll take ages without a car,” you remarked.
Crystal sighed. “Well, I can’t drive. How are we gonna get there?”
Your lips lifted into the beginning of a smirk as you turned back to Jenny. She heaved a deep sigh and threw back the keys into your hands.
Your smile broke out as you thanked her and motioned for the others to follow you. “Come on, I’ll give you a ride.”
Charles insisted on sitting in the front seat beside you, his feet up on the dashboard, tapping his finger along to the music in the car. You thought it was oddly charming.
You had asked what their whole deal was and Niko had inevitably revealed that they were the Dead Boy Detectives and that Charles was, in fact, dead. Upon hearing it, you almost slammed the breaks again in pure shock but managed to keep driving as if nothing.
And he laughs at all my jokes And he says I'm so American
It also started raining on your way there, making you groan in frustration as you remarked that “all this water is going to get Jenny’s car so muddy.”
“‘Wa-der,’” he had chuckled under his breath.
In an instant, you had turned to him with a harsh glare. “What?”
“Nothing,” came his amused reply. “You’re just so American.”
It wasn’t nothing, though. It was the first of many remarks against your American accent.
You had arrived at the lighthouse and very warily gotten out of the car. Somehow you had gotten roped up in their case and was now there to help them out through the end.
Charles had noticed your shivering in the cold rain and offered you his jacket which, despite ghost physics, was quite heavy and warm. You supposed ghosts couldn’t really get wet by normal rain, as both Edwin and Charles seemed unbothered by it.
You had tried to argue against taking it, claiming that you wouldn’t want to ‘strip him of any of his Britishness’, to which he had only scoffed and heaved the thing onto you while saying, “so American of you to assume my Britishness can be stripped away merely by my coat.”
Charles had then given you an appraising look and, while the others were distracted by the ghosts on the pier, bent down slightly to say, “You look pretty wearing my clothes.”
Your cheeks had warmed immediately and you’d turned away to not give it away, earning a chuckle. It made you smile though.
He learnt quickly that complimenting you would earn him a blush and a soft nudge against his ribcage, which made him do it even more.
That was also when he liked pointing out your accent. It started as a small observation, but eventually evolved into insults and bits.
He did it every chance he got; saying ‘lit-er-ally’ with an over-exaggerated vocal fry; ‘aloominum’; ‘hey, y’all’; and, his absolute favourite of them all, ‘i’m walkin here!’. Half of them made you laugh incessantly and the other half made you drag a hand over your face in frustration.
The worst was when he would parrot you personally, making you half wondering if you should be ashamed of your accent. When you had asked him about it, though, he had been quick to assure you that he loved your accent.
And that was when you started doing it back to him.
It became a game for the two of you, often just imitating each other’s accents.
“Are you ‘schewpid’?” you asked, turning to him.
He chuckled dryly, cocking his head in your direction. “Yeah, yeah, while you’re throwing insults at me I am just going to go grab a ‘kawfee’.”
You scoffed. “You’re a ghost, Charles. You can’t have coffee.”
“I can, but it just tastes disgusting.”
“Okay, well, while you’re at it, ‘kan I please ‘ave a cupa wa’a’?” you said, meeting his defiant gaze before he burst out in laughter. It made your insides warm knowing you were the cause of that laugh.
“Would you two please stop it?” came Crystal’s irritated reply. Edwin only rolled his eyes at your antics but you knew he agreed with Crystal’s discontent. You caught Charles’ gaze and broke out in a smile.
“I don’t know,” said Niko, fiddling with her fingers, “I think it’s cute when they do that.”
And just like that, you both fell silent and turned away from each other.
Oh, God, it's just not fair of him To make me feel this much I'd go anywhere he goes
You knew you liked him, a lot. But you hadn’t dared admit anything to him or anyone else and tried your best to hide it—not that you were doing a very good job.
The only thing that knew what you felt were the thrown-away poems you had written on a whim, his beaming face starkly imprinted in your mind.
You didn’t think it was fair for him to make you feel that much, enough to actually write poems about him. God, you were whipped (Charles would have definitely made fun of your using that word if he heard it).
You came with the Dead Boy Detectives on all their cases, now an honorary member in their Detective Agency. You enjoyed a lot of detective stories, like Sherlock Holmes and so seemingly had absorbed some of it, because you were quite good at figuring out clues.
It was all practically worth it to see Charles' smile directed at you after you had discovered something.
God, I'm so boring, and I'm so rude Can't have a conversation if it's not all about you The way you dress, and the books you read
And despite it all, you didn’t feel quite enough for him. He was a charismatic and vibrant person, while you thought of yourself as quite rude and boring.
Sometimes you wondered if you were too harsh in your remarks at Charles’ britishness, but then remembered his always-present smile that met your gaze and your worries fell away.
Nothing had happened up until that point, but it became increasingly more difficult denying anything being between you two.
Even Edwin started catching on and asking if something was between you two, which lead to some very awkward silences where Charles would drag Edwin away with an apologetic smile thrown your way.
Until finally it got too difficult to deny.
Niko would ask you something about a case and somehow you would end up talking about Charles’ smile, his eyes, the way he dressed and what he was interested in. She finally got so sick of it and decided to just call you out on it.
“You like Charles.”
You opened your mouth to protest but she put a finger against your lips, causing you to be too stunned to speak.
“And don’t say that you don’t, because it’s obvious,” she said, removing her finger.
“It’s not that obvious, is it?” you asked. You refused to meet her gaze and instead tried to look anywhere but her.
“Yes, it is.” She sighed, bringing her hands up to clasp your shoulders. “We all know it. Even Charles. But he won’t admit it either, so please go talk to him before we all die.”
You rolled your eyes, but felt a small smile start to form on your lips. “OK, just a little dramatic there?”
Niko shook her head with a serious expression on her face. “No. Now go find him.”
She had shooed you away after that, making sure that both Edwin and Crystal were distracted enough so that you could slip out to talk to Charles privately.
You found him in the other room, rooting through his backpack to find something ridiculously large, no wonder.
And he says I'm so American Oh, God, I'm gonna marry him If he keeps this shit up I might just be in lo-lo-, lo-lo-, lo-lo-, lo-lo-lo-lo-love
He seemed to have heard your footsteps as you were coming in because he tilted his head in your directing, flashing his trademark smile.
The sight of it made you swoon and you had to take a deep breath in order to collect your thoughts. When he finally asked what was up, your words came out jumbled and very much not like you had planned them to come out.
“Hey, hey,” he said, taking ahold of your shoulders and meeting your nervous gaze with his steady one. “Take a deep breath. C’mon, breathe with me.”
You did as he said, breathing with him, trying and failing to ignore the shivers that spread along with his touch. When you had collected yourself, he smiled and let go, much to your disappointment.
“That’s it. Now, what’s on your mind?” he asked.
You strode past him, opting to face the window instead of seeing his face. It only made it harder to get out any coherent sentences. “Why’d you think anything was on my mind?”
“Well,” remarked Charles, strolling after you, “it’s not everyday you storm in here as if the world is ending and then end up babbling like a stroke patient.”
You stared at him in horror before rolling your eyes. “Stop being so British, Charles.”
“Sorry, no can do, love.”
“That’s the problem, isn’t it?” you muttered to yourself.
“What?” he asked immediately, striding right in front of you so he could look you in the eyes.
“Look,” you started, refusing to meet his eye and instead looking anywhere else. Although, you could feel his gaze burning into your skull. “I might have developed some… feelings for you.”
Charles’ eyes widened at your words and you tried to turn again but he grabbed your shoulder to hold you in place. You sighed and finally met his gaze. His eyes were the same mysterious pools of darkness that you were used to, but you might have fooled yourself to imagine something else in them—something hopeful.
You decided to continue your confession because you were far past the point of redemption and might as well get it all out in one go.
“And the problem is, Charles, that however hard I try not to, I keep developing feelings for you. Even your annoying habits and antics cause me to fall for you. And, I swear to God, that if you keep this shit up I’m going to be properly gone for you.”
You waited a breath for his reaction, but when nothing came you were forced to ask him again. “Charles?”
“Uh, yeah,” he stammered out, his voice suddenly dry and cracked. “Sorry, I—uh, I was not prepared for that.”
You shrugged. “That’s alright. We’ll just go back to being friends. Nothing needs to change.”
He shook his head violently. “That’s absolutely not OK.”
You had but a moment to be surprised before he went in for the best kiss you had had yet in your short life. He held you like he had never touched anything before in his life and kissed you like he was a dying man and you were the cure. You weren't sure how much of it he could feel, but the psychological effect was immediate and mind blowing.
He may be dead but he had never felt more alive than in that moment.
I really love my bed, but, man, it's hard to sleep when he's with me When he's with me
Your relationship escalated quickly after that first kiss. You didn’t define it as anything, but it made you happier just knowing he was there by your side—and you could all him yours.
And you wasted no time in physically progressing your relationship—AKA you did not get much sleeping done.
It was a different kind of vulnerable, allowing yourself to give your soul and body to Charles, and him trusting you with himself.
Because of his being a ghost, it felt like so much more an emotional and psychological experience which only made you appreaciate it, and him, more.
By the looks of it, he enjoyed it as well—more than enjoyed it. He couldn’t stop smiling at you afterwards, while he laid on the bed beside you and gazed at you with half-dazed eyes.
Charles let himself curl around you, embracing you. You weren’t sure if ghosts could get tired, but nonetheless he whispered out a, “I’m knackered.”
You had nuzzled into the crook of his neck. “You’re so British.”
He kissed your forehead softly, and you felt it more than you had ever felt him before. “And you’re so American.”
You only chuckled and let yourself drift off to sleep in his arms holding you close.
You never wanted to get out of bed or leave him, and he utilised that fact to his every advantage.
He did everything he could to keep you in bed with him, even though he probably didn’t sleep much, just wanting to hold you close.
It wasn’t fair how easy he made your heart melt.
I apologize if it's a little too much, just a little too soon But if the conversation ever were to come up I don't wanna assume this stuff But ain't it love? I think I'm in love
It didn’t take long for you to know that it wasn’t merely affection you felt for Charles, but something much deeper.
You didn’t want to presume Charles felt anything close to what you felt, though.
So you continued acting like whatever the two of you were—kissing and hooking up—not quite a couple but not quite friends with benefits, but something in between that went deep between you two.
Without any real definition for what you two were, it frightened you out of saying anything to him.
So you kept going with the featherlight kisses, the quiet giggles after one of you said a joke and were trying to cover it up as to not disturb the rest of the group, and the endless nights where you could be in his arms and have not a care in the world.
But it was on your mind, constantly.
Oh, how you just wished to say those three words to him, to just have it out in the open. So he could have you with the truth staring into his face and do with you what he pleased.
You wanted to splay yourself open for him, vulnerable and unafraid, show him yourself and let him love you back with the same ferocity with which you loved.
And finally, it became too much.
He was on his way out for one of the cases, one of which you chose not to go with them to. He had just collected all his belongings in that backpack of his and went in for a goodbye kiss.
“Be careful,” you whispered between parted lips, leaving the ghost of your words on his mouth. He smiled through it and pulled away.
“Always am,” came his cheeky reply, winking at you before turning to the door. “Bye.”
“Bye,” you called, and then, without thinking, “Love you.”
It took a mere moment for his brain to register your words before he halted and slowly turned in his step.
“What?”
Your own eyes widened in surprise of yourself and you were quick to come up with a way to play it off as a mistake or a stumble upon your words. But he crossed the distance between you with long strides, dropping his backpack and bringing his hands up to hold your cheeks tenderly.
“What did you just say?” he whispered, eyes shifting back and forth between yours trying to find the truth in your words. Your mouth fell agape, but you couldn’t find the words to tell him again, so close now so that you could feel his short breaths of air on your skin. “Please,” he said again, voice so soft you had to strain to hear him.
“I mean, it might be a little too much, too soon, and I don’t want to assume anything, but..” Your voice trailed off, breaking. Your lips fought to form the words that so desperately wanted to make their way out of you. “But I—I love you, Charles.”
He breathed out huge sigh of relief and captured your lips with his. “I love you too,” he whispered between breaths, barely audible.
Your smile could not be hindered as he kissed you back, fiercely and passionately. He kept pressing kisses on your mouth, on the corner of your lips, trailing to your cheeks, to your neck, down to your shoulders and your chest. All the while he kept repeating those same three words, “I love you,” over and over again, pressing them into your skin. Into your soul, essentially.
Your hands were grasped in his hair, fingers curling around his locks as you felt every touch of his lips that brought forth a shiver down your spine. Not from the coldness, though, but from the feeling of his soul connecting to yours.
He kept pressing featherlight kisses to you with small ‘I love you’s, and you couldn’t fight the laugh that escaped its way through you.
“Okay, stop it” you whispered, pulling his head away to grasp his face in your hands. You met his eyes with a smile and his beaming grin made your insides melt. “I love you so much, Charles.”
He laughed, pressing another kiss to your lips. “I love you too.”
“Now, come on, you got a case to solve.”
Charles let himself be lead away to the others, refusing to let go of your hand. He even pressed kisses to the back of it every chance he got, and you were roped into going to the case with the rest of them, if only not to leave Charles’ side.

Dead Boy Detectives characters as Marianas Trench songs
Edwin - Forget Me Not
If memories are shadows We'd best not waste the light Echoes of aphasia Have haunted you tonight But I will watch you sleeping And make sure you're alright And you will Forget, forget, forget Forget me not You will Forget, forget, forget Forget me not I'm not ready for what's to come Does that make me My mother's selfish son But I wanted you to know I will help you my friend From the lines to amend To the cradle again I'll be your I'll be your I'll be your Forget, forget me not I'll be your I'll be your Forget me not I know you're not quite here But you're not quite gone Sometimes the night gets darkest before the dawn Maybe life's too short But the end is long Yeah, life's too short But the end is long Life's too short But the end is long Yeah, life's too short But the end is so long
Charles - Alibis
Most times it all comes out wrong I don't know the words but I'll hum along There's nothing famillar here anymore To anyone or anything left to feel alive And I still taste that sickness And it makes me crazy without it at best But I'm in the same place I used to be But I'm trying harder not to be This is not the man I hoped to be And I'm just trying to stop the bleeding I don't know how to word it I just started to deserve it And all my, all my faces are alibis And me, I'm half the man I wanted to be So what am I? What am I? So what am I? And all my, all my faces are alibis This is not the man I hoped to be And I'm just trying to stop the bleeding I don't know how the words go I just started not to say no Don't want it, don't get it I know you won't regret it Don't surface, don't surface And I feel so damn worthless Another day is gone and all my faces are alibis All my faces are alibis
Crystal - Perfect
Please sing to me, I can see you open up to breathe. Fast words make it easier on me, If the point's to never disappoint you, Somebody's got to tell me what to do. Just wish you could've seen me When it used to come so easy. I like to say that it's easy to stay But it's not for me, 'Cause I'm barely here at all. Slow down now, the secret's out. And I swear now everything is perfect. What you want, what you need has been killing me. Try to be everything that you want me to be. I'll say yes, I'll undress, I'll do more for less. Now I'll change everything 'til it's perfect again. Coming down, coming around, Giving a frown to the sound when I hit ground. I hate the way that I say I should stay When I know that I don't give a fuck about it anyway. I shake hands, I shoot smiles all around, As I sell my body by the pound. Sign my name on the dotted line For would-be fate, do not resuscitate.
Niko - Glimmer
Thirst got the best of us Hurt took the rest of us But tell me what does it mean if We could never leave it, we can never leave it now You've changed but it's not enough And doubt is insidious Creeps up on you softly I can't' get it off me, I can't get it off me now Can we forgive and forget, can we forgive and forget Can we forgive and forget, and can we lay to rest Can we catch a breath, can we catch a breath I throw my head back, heart under attack Straight through the chest, like a thunderclap You can burn too bright, you can burn too bright to see With all the lights out, the shadow of a doubt It's funny what you find, when you go without So keep the lights down low, keep the lights down low to see Oh, I see A glimmer, glimmer
Jenny - Alive Again
I felt it turn to come and go Don't worry no one ever knows I don't know why it just won't die It breaks me in to stay alive I know it hurt a lot like you C'mon I know that you felt it too It hurts the same and that's OK I never liked him anyway I know, I know,I know,I... It seems so long since I've been gone I got so used to just hanging on I feel so wrong I don't belong I got so used to just hanging on I'm used to starving out instead It's easier than faking it Sometimes it hurts but That's no worse than all those times I guess it works I know they walked away with a piece of me The more I know that I won't go The more I bruise from laying low I know I know I know
Monty - Your Ghost
Come to me in my sleep Somewhere before the dawn My haunted heart is uneasy Evermore ever drawn, ever drawn, yeah It's like every time you vanish somehow you're still here You never seem to manage just to disappear And everything I see comes crashing down on me But the ghost of you is always near I can't get myself together I've been running for forever from your ghost, ghost And I never need to wonder if I'll ever be from underneath your ghost, ghost You are just enough out of reach Just where I can see I won't give up your ghost I can leave this place forever But I know I'll never sever from your ghost From your ghost (ghost, forever, forever, ghost)
The Cat King - Masterpiece Theater II
They keep mostly to themselves Hush now they'll hurt you till your heart melts They know you're lonely And they will only break your heart And this masterpiece will tear you apart I'll burn out and slip away And this just a part I portray You're beautiful, Can I hide in you and stay here? First it comes alive, creeping quiet And this is just a part I portray You're beautiful, can I hide in you And stay here all night? Well, oh I will pull away I portray I'll wreck this if I have to Tell me what good would that do? I'll wreck this if I have to

The balance for an author between writing in-character and writing towards their own interests and kinks is a hard one to do well, for sure, but I'm a little bummed at how the latter seems to be overtaking the former specifically wrt Edwin for a lot of writers.
Like, for example, if you want me to buy the Edwin of your kinky dom dreams, there's a lot of character work that I personally will need to buy in. And maybe I'm just not your ideal reader and you shouldn't worry about pleasing me, but it feels like a specific fanon version of Edwin is gaining steam and overpowering other characterizations of him and I'm bummed about it.
Honestly, I'm all for people who want to keep the fandom going despite the show being cancelled, but the more the fandom drifts away from canon, the less interested I'm becoming, personally. I love fannish creativity, but I'm here because I loved what the show was doing and the more than fandom ignores the parts of the show I was most interested in, the less I want to be here.
I've already been bummed for a while that Jenny and even Niko are often absent in fic and that Crystal and the Night Nurse get side-lined, (it's super frustrating to me that the fandom feels less diverse than the show) and I think I've exhusted the fics that center them, but now it feels like fandom is just fully running off and doing their own thing with Edwin and it's getting harder to find fic and meta that approach him in the ways that I'm interested in.
I tend to only make one or two fanworks per fandom and I'm fundamentally more drawn to making gen or gen-adjacent works (hey hey I'm ace) and I've made everything at this point that I feel compelled to, so for me it's now just finding things other people are doing that I connect with and I'm not just coming up with that many at this point.
And this isn't me trying to shame people into making things I'd be more into (though I would be thrilled) or shame people for making things I'm not into (you do you even if I'm not going to follow), rather its me being kind of sad that the fandom isn't working out for me the way I'd hoped after watching the show. And since I don't have a new shiny thing I feel fannish about I just feel adrift: I don't fit in this fandom and I could try to turn back to older things I've felt fannish about or try to find some hot new-to-me thing to fall in love with, but I fell in love with *this* show and I want to be *here*. It's just that here isn't the place I'd hoped it would be. And it's no one's fault, no one is doing anything wrong, apart from maybe some background pervasive internalized shit present in most fandoms and also life, but it's still sad. It's still a bummer.
Anyway, this got off track and kind of turned into a little bit of a 'it's not goodbye yet, but it's heading in that direction' ask, but yeah. I just feel very disconnected from the fandom as a whole and what I see happening wrt fanon Edwin is emblematic of that disconnect, to me.
Thanks to everyone who posts thoughtful things about all the ladies and Charles, either here or elsewhere in fandom -- you all are keeping me hanging on, at least for the moment.

Reblogs and feedback always appreciated! Tag list: @kissthe-gogoat @kyuudomo @caloroso-cosmos @omrade-echorin Let me know if you want to be added or taken off!
Last chapter baby! This was an emotional ride, so sincere thanks to everyone who's stuck with me through it. Both followers, friends, and family. Your support really means the world to me.
“I still don’t understand why you need me for this.”
“I told you, you know the layout better. Since you didn’t give me a map like usual. Sides’ the place is empty- I wanted to ask more about how your whole business works. Somewhere truly private, y’know?”
It was the oldest trick in the book. Get them talking about themself so you can work. Or get them to say something incriminating. Which Antigone, of course, did not oblige.
It was slow work, but Maxwell managed to take back the notes Andrew used to leave in houses. They had sent to work painting the Antigone family seal on them in invisible ink.
With their family’s past (one easily dug up), the police would have no problem convicting Nikos Antigone of everything. All Andrew would have to do was play hostage here in just a few minutes.
“Oh, I need to pick this lock- bit of a two-hand job. Could you hold the note?”
Antigone growled but agreed with a sneer. Andrew discreetly pressed the button for Maxwell. Most likely he was calling the police right now- saying, well, something, anything, to get them there quick. Andrew couldn’t help but smile.
“You know, I didn’t know we went to the same school.” Perfect topic to stall with.
Antigone was immediately thrown off. “What? W-We did?” He sputtered.
Good lord. Bring something up from a criminal’s past and they’re all yours to manipulate.
“According to the book of signatures I passed around on graduation day, yes. Same year and everything.”
Antigone was now staring Andrew down with a dangerous glint in his eye. He ever so slightly thumbed at the dagger hilt on his belt. Okay, backpedaling now.
But the moment he saw faint police lights outside, he knew he had to keep going, for better or for worse. He only had one shot…!
So still fiddling with the lock, he blurted, “I saw your old school sweetheart the other day. Jennifer, right?”
Antigone froze. A stillness hung ominously in the air, like a jaguar about to pounce. The hairs on the back of Andrew’s neck stood up, and he almost started praying.
“How dare-“
Saved by the fuzz, though! As soon as Antigone looked as though he could kill Andrew, the men in uniform came streaming in the front door.
Andrew wasn’t all that scared. He winked at Antigone before yelling. “Help! I’m up here, he’s got a knife! Please help!” And more quietly, “Might wanna check the back of that note, Mr. Tig.”
Antigone didn’t bother to look, and instead pulled out the same weapon Andrew shouted about. “You tricked me!” he jabbed the knife at Andrew, who put his hands up in instinctive defense. “You lying snake!” And to the smaller man’s sickening shock, Antigone swung the knife, barely grazing his cheek and hitting his hand by sheer chance.
But upon hearing footsteps getting closer, the towering villain backed away, leaving Andrew to yelp in shock and fright and the rapidly reddening wound.
An officer stamped his way up the nearby stairs, and shouted at Antigone to freeze, but the man wasn’t having it. Andrew hadn’t thought Antigone would ever use an actual weapon on him- he was wrong. Whimpering in pain and paralyzing, icy fear, he moved only to foolishly pull out the blade and grip his bloodied hand.
“I am not to blame! This scoundrel here-” Antigone shook a finger at Andrew, “-is the thief you’ve been looking for! He did this to himself to make me-”
“Yeah, Chapman told us you’d say that.” A twinge of comfort came with hearing Max’s name, along with the struggling Antigone, who was now being arrested despite his best efforts.
And just like that it’s over, Andrew thought to himself as the officers walked him to a car and drove him to a hospital.
~*~
A day later in that same hospital, Andrew was recovering from a surprisingly quick surgery.
“The knife went through the top of your right palm, losing you a pinky and very nearly your ring finger, too. You have a couple options now; leave the stump or find a prosthetic somehow. Both are up to you to manage,” the soft spoken nurse informed him as soon as he was lucid enough to understand.
“Well, shit. Thanks, uh,” he peeked at her name badge. “Thanks Mary. Guessing you’re not gonna give me a new one for free then?”
“No, but I might,” came a gentle yet dry voice from the door.
Andrew turned as the nurse excused herself. “Max!” a fuzzy black figure hopped up on the bed next to him. “And Maxie!”
“Now, I’m not really supposed to have her in here, so…” Max chuckled, sitting down and giving the cat a few pets.
“Nah, I get it. So, finally coming to see me, huh?”
“I’ve been too swamped with end-of-case work. Our plan worked, you’re off scot free. I considered resigning, but-”
“But you don’t love me that much, I getcha,” Andrew teased.
Maxwell gave him a look. “More that I love my job too much to let it go, risks be damned.”
“Makes sense. But you didn’t come here to talk about work, did you?”
Maxwell reached for Andrew’s now four-fingered hand, gently running his five over the bandages. “This wouldn’t have happened if I had just-”
“Hey, it doesn’t matter now. You know that,” Andy reassured him, running his good hand through Max’s thick black locks. The man leaned into the touch, putting his own hand on Andy’s cheek.
“You terrify me,” he almost whispered after a moment. Andrew tilted his head but didn’t say anything. “I’ve never felt so conflicted before meeting you. It was torture. And even now I can’t be sure that loving you is a good thing.”
“Neither can I. And I’ve never met someone that can make me feel so cornered. I didn’t know I wanted to be. But, we’re both selfish jerks. So if loving you is gonna be bad for me, it wouldn’t be the first bad decision either of us has made.”
This made Max chuckle and lean in to kiss Andy. “You’re probably right.”
~*~
It had been a few months. A new metal finger glinted on Andrew’s right hand.
“Jennifer.”
“Andrew.”
“So, I heard ole’ Mr. Antigone is in prison now?”
She gave a solemn nod. “For ten years.”
Andrew blew a low whistle. “Well, shit.”
Her demeanor went from closed to fiery. “This is your fault, you know. I know you and Chapman did something to pin your shit on Nikos. And now I won’t be able to see him!”
Andrew drew away slightly. Both were silent for a time.
“…I think I get it now.”
“What.”
“I remind you of him, don’t I? That’s why when he disappeared to lead his family’s ‘business’ you attached yourself to me.”
She sighed. “…I don’t know. I guess I just hoped I could still hold onto him somehow.”
“So you held on to the crook classmate that shared some resemblance with him.”
She shook her head. Not as a ‘no’ but more as a self-chastise.
“We were horrible for each other. It’s no wonder we fell apart.”
“Yeah.” Another pause. “You could see about visitations.”
“I’ll figure that out on my own. I don’t even know if he’d want to see me. But, I know there’s still good in him. At least I hope so.”
“Heh. There’s my Jenny. Always hoping-“
“-never planning. I know, I know.”
He stood up and started to get ready to go.
“For what it’s worth, I’m at least sort of glad I knew you,” she said with a twinge of sadness.
“Same here. It’s probably best if we didn’t stay friends, but I’m sticking with that bakery. You can always come find me.”
And for the first time in years, she smiled at him- a genuine smile. “Thanks, Andrew. Good luck with your bitch detective.”
“With George and Darwin always lurking around? I’m gonna need it. Good luck with your crime lord.”
“I think I’ll need it too.”
They laughed, and then left, one by one.
~*~
Isabella was melancholically gathering her belongings from the bakery, occasionally swiping up a tear. Andrew walked in by coincidence, and she rushed to hug him.
“It’s not gonna be the same around here without me,” she mumbled into his chest.
“No, but it’s probably for the best,” he said, returning the embrace. “I’m so sorry, Izzy. It wasn’t fair for me to bring you into all this.”
“No, it’s alr… No, you’re right.” And with that, she couldn’t help but start crying again. “But thanks for being my dad, if only for a little while.”
“Dad, really?” he chuckled. “Sure kid. You changed my world for the better. Even if I hurt you.”
“I’ll never forget you. And… Well, I love you.”
“I love you too, girlie.”
She held onto him for just a little longer, before taking a shaky breath and grabbing her bag. “I don’t know if I can,” she whispered.
He gave her a dim smile. “You’re tough, kiddo. You can’t stay shackled to someone like me, though. I know you’ve got the guts to do what’s best for you.”
She wavered, unsure if she wanted to hug him again. But ultimately, she steeled herself, said a goodbye, and walked away leaving a bittersweet taste behind.

Loosely my TBR for 2017
Whelp, I did this last year and writing it up makes me actually have to commit. Not that I actually got around to reading all of the books on my TBR for 2016 and I read a ton that were not on my TBR, this is just loosely outlining what I want to read this year. Starting with... (In chronological order of their release dates)
By Your Side by Kasie West Kasie West is a spectacular author. Her novels are perfect for the hopeless romantics who appreciate cliches. Which means I, obviously love her books. Recently, West wrote P.S. I Like You, a fantastic book that was hopelessly cliche, but romantic and adorable none the less. West has also written things like The Fill-In Boyfriend, On the Fence, Pivot Point & The Distance Between Us. All of which I have read and enjoyed. I fully expect to be enjoying this novel as well.
Release Date: January 31, 2017 Yes, it's already out, but I've been seriously busy with school so... I'll get to it as soon as I can.
Synopsis: In this irresistible story, Kasie West explores the timeless question of what to do when you fall for the person you least expect. Witty and romantic, this paperback original from a fan favorite is perfect for fans of Stephanie Perkins and Morgan Matson.
When Autumn Collins finds herself accidentally locked in the library for an entire weekend, she doesn’t think things could get any worse. But that’s before she realizes that Dax Miller is locked in with her. Autumn doesn’t know much about Dax except that he’s trouble. Between the rumors about the fight he was in (and that brief stint in juvie that followed it) and his reputation as a loner, he’s not exactly the ideal person to be stuck with. Still, she just keeps reminding herself that it is only a matter of time before Jeff, her almost-boyfriend, realizes he left her in the library and comes to rescue her.
Only he doesn’t come. No one does.
Instead it becomes clear that Autumn is going to have to spend the next couple of days living off vending-machine food and making conversation with a boy who clearly wants nothing to do with her. Except there is more to Dax than meets the eye. As he and Autumn first grudgingly, and then not so grudgingly, open up to each other, Autumn is struck by their surprising connection. But can their feelings for each other survive once the weekend is over and Autumn’s old life, and old love interest, threaten to pull her from Dax’s side?
King's Cage by Victoria Aveyard The third (and final?) book in the Red Queen Series. (Glass Sword #2) I have such mixed feelings about these books... I mean really they're very cliche, and while I don't mind some cliches, these books just overuse way too many common tropes. Also, this series is overhyped. It is not nearly as good as basically everything says it is. While yeah, it's fine, it's nothing extraordinary. There are a lot of interesting ideas, but the execution is not overly impressive to me. Still, I intend to read this... someday.
Release Date: February 7, 2017 Yes, again it's out. But I don't have time to read it right now, and am in no real rush.
Synopsis: In this breathless third installment to Victoria Aveyard’s bestselling Red Queen series, allegiances are tested on every side. And when the Lightning Girl's spark is gone, who will light the way for the rebellion?
Mare Barrow is a prisoner, powerless without her lightning, tormented by her lethal mistakes. She lives at the mercy of a boy she once loved, a boy made of lies and betrayal. Now a king, Maven Calore continues weaving his dead mother's web in an attempt to maintain control over his country—and his prisoner.
As Mare bears the weight of Silent Stone in the palace, her once-ragtag band of newbloods and Reds continue organizing, training, and expanding. They prepare for war, no longer able to linger in the shadows. And Cal, the exiled prince with his own claim on Mare's heart, will stop at nothing to bring her back.
When blood turns on blood, and ability on ability, there may be no one left to put out the fire—leaving Norta as Mare knows it to burn all the way down.
Hunted by Meagan Spooner Meagan Spooner also co-wrote These Broken Stars-- basically but not really Titanic in space-- with Aimee Kaufman. It is a fantastic trilogy, and I really am looking forward to seeing Meagan's personal writing style. The story also seems appealing to me.
Release Date: March 14, 2017
Synopsis: Beauty knows the Beast’s forest in her bones—and in her blood. Though she grew up with the city’s highest aristocrats, far from her father’s old lodge, she knows that the forest holds secrets and that her father is the only hunter who’s ever come close to discovering them.
So when her father loses his fortune and moves Yeva and her sisters back to the outskirts of town, Yeva is secretly relieved. Out in the wilderness, there’s no pressure to make idle chatter with vapid baronessas…or to submit to marrying a wealthy gentleman. But Yeva’s father’s misfortune may have cost him his mind, and when he goes missing in the woods, Yeva sets her sights on one prey: the creature he’d been obsessively tracking just before his disappearance.
Deaf to her sisters’ protests, Yeva hunts this strange Beast back into his own territory—a cursed valley, a ruined castle, and a world of creatures that Yeva’s only heard about in fairy tales. A world that can bring her ruin or salvation. Who will survive: the Beauty, or the Beast?
A Court of Wings and Ruin by Sarah J. Maas OH. MY. GOD. I think we all knew this book would be on my list. How could it not? Last year, the previous book in this trilogy (actually, now there are new books added on), A Court of Mist and Fury, is now my all time favorite book. (Book 1-- A Court of Thorns and Roses) Of course I'm going to read ACOWAR as soon as I can get my hands on it. Besides, Sarah J. Maas is one of my all time favorite authors. I doubt she can disappoint with this spectacular cast of characters. (and if you stalk my Tumblr, you know I'm still not over ACOMAF)
Release Date: May 2, 2017 WHY ISN'T THIS DAY HERE YET?! Side Note: The Coloring Book is also released on this day. I fully intend to purchase this as well.
Synopsis: Looming war threatens all Feyre holds dear in the third volume of the #1 New York Times bestselling A Court of Thorns and Rosesseries.
Feyre has returned to the Spring Court, determined to gather information on Tamlin's maneuverings and the invading king threatening to bring Prythian to its knees. But to do so she must play a deadly game of deceit-and one slip may spell doom not only for Feyre, but for her world as well.
As war bears down upon them all, Feyre must decide who to trust amongst the dazzling and lethal High Lords-and hunt for allies in unexpected places.
In this thrilling third book in the #1 New York Times bestselling series from Sarah J. Maas, the earth will be painted red as mighty armies grapple for power over the one thing that could destroy them all.
Always and Forever, Lara Jean by Jenny Han Another book I'm really looking forward to-- the third book in the To All the Boys I've Loved Before Trilogy. I honestly love these books so much, they feel so real, so it's easy to get attached to all the characters and relationships. And they're SO CUTE. Honestly, just please read these books if you like cutesy romance. They're cutesy romance supreme.
Release Date: May 2, 2017 As much as I love these books, I love A Court of Mist and Fury more, meaning I will most definitely be reading A Court of Wings and Ruin first, since these two books are released on the same day. Oh, and also, WHY ARE ALL THE BOOKS RELEASED IN MAY THIS YEAR?!
Synopsis: Lara Jean’s letter-writing days aren’t over in this surprise follow-up to the New York Times bestselling To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before and P.S. I Still Love You.
Lara Jean is having the best senior year a girl could ever hope for. She is head over heels in love with her boyfriend, Peter; her dad’s finally getting remarried to their next door neighbor, Ms. Rothschild; and Margot’s coming home for the summer just in time for the wedding.
But change is looming on the horizon. And while Lara Jean is having fun and keeping busy helping plan her father’s wedding, she can’t ignore the big life decisions she has to make. Most pressingly, where she wants to go to college and what that means for her relationship with Peter. She watched her sister Margot go through these growing pains. Now Lara Jean’s the one who’ll be graduating high school and leaving for college and leaving her family—and possibly the boy she loves—behind.
When your heart and your head are saying two different things, which one should you listen to?
The Crown's Fate by Evelyn Skye Over the summer, I read The Crown's Game, a fascinatingly magical story of death and romance that takes place in Russia sometime in the past. I was hooked, not in love it, but I quite like it. And I'm very interested to see what comes next.
Release Date: Yet another May release, May 16, 2017 Synopsis: (SPOILERS TO BOOK ONE) Perfect for fans of Shadow and Bone and Red Queen, The Crown’s Fate is the thrilling sequel to the New York Times bestselling The Crown’s Game, an atmospheric historical fantasy set in Imperial Russia.
Russia is on the brink of great change. Pasha’s coronation approaches, and Vika is now the Imperial Enchanter, but the role she once coveted may be more difficult—and dangerous—than she ever expected.
Pasha is grappling with his own problems—his legitimacy is in doubt, the girl he loves loathes him, and he believes his best friend is dead. When a challenger to the throne emerges—and with the magic in Russia growing rapidly—Pasha must do whatever it takes to keep his position and protect his kingdom.
For Nikolai, the ending of the Crown’s Game stung deeply. Although he just managed to escape death, Nikolai remains alone, a shadow hidden in a not-quite-real world of his own creation. But when he’s given a second chance at life—tied to a dark price—Nikolai must decide just how far he’s willing to go to return to the world.
With revolution on the rise, dangerous new magic rearing up, and a tsardom up for the taking, Vika, Nikolai, and Pasha must fight—or face the destruction of not only their world but also themselves.
Lord of Shadows by Cassandra Clare Of course this book is also on my list. Cassandra Clare is the woman who got me obsessed with reading, and the first book in this series, Lady Midnight, was fantastic (as expected.) I look forward to seeing more of this story. While Cassandra's writing style and stories have not exactly what I have been into lately, her stories will always have a special place in my heart. It may just be because it's been a long time since I've read a new book of hers (a year of something), and in that time I got obsessed with another book (A Court of Mist and Fury), but I still love her writing... so I have high hopes for this book.
Release Date: May 23, 2017 Another May Date
Oh, also the coloring book for The Mortal Instruments comes out on April 25, 2017.
Synopsis: Sunny Los Angeles can be a dark place indeed in Cassandra Clare’s Lord of Shadows, the sequel to the #1 New York Times and USA TODAY bestselling Lady Midnight.
Emma Carstairs has finally avenged her parents. She thought she’d be at peace. But she is anything but calm. Torn between her desire for her parabatai Julian and her desire to protect him from the brutal consequences of parabatai relationships, she has begun dating his brother, Mark. But Mark has spent the past five years trapped in Faerie; can he ever truly be a Shadowhunter again?
And the faerie courts are not silent. The Unseelie King is tired of the Cold Peace, and will no longer concede to the Shadowhunters’ demands. Caught between the demands of faerie and the laws of the Clave, Emma, Julian, and Mark must find a way to come together to defend everything they hold dear—before it’s too late.
Reign of Serpents by Eleanor Herman Wow. I can't believe this series is coming to a close. These books are an intriguing fantastical twist on the teen years of Alexander the Great, a historical figure that I have a great respect and liking for. Both books, Legacy of Kings and Empire of Dust, I tore through incredibly quickly. They're riveting. I highly recommend them.
Release Date: June 27, 2017
Synopsis: New York Times bestselling author Eleanor Herman entwines the real scandals of history with epic fantasy in this action-packed follow-up to EMPIRE OF DUST.
In REIGN OF SERPENTS, the ancient power of Snake Blood threatens the known world. While Prince Alexander struggles with a very deadly inner demon, his betrothed, Zofia, is on her way to him, to unite their kingdoms…even as she begins to realize where her true allegiance lies. The fierce Cynane meets her match-not in her future husband, the deranged king of Illyria, but in her great-great-grandfather, Talus, possessor of Smoke Blood, who will teach her the true meaning of betrayal. And marooned together on an island in the Mediterranean, romantic tension blooms between Katerina and Hephaestion as they learn of lost civilizations and discover a device that could help them do the impossible: kill the last living god.
In a cruel, yet rather ironic twist of fate, Now I Rise by Kiersten White, also is released on the exact same day as Reign of Serpents. Why is this funny? Because this is another historical fiction mixed with fantasy about a big historical figure, except instead of being about Alexander, this series is about Vladimir the Impaler... If Vlad was a girl. Very interesting... I'm not sure which book I'll read first, I guess we'll just have to wait and see what mood I'm in on the day. Release Date: June 27, 2017 Synopsis: Lada Dracul has no allies. No throne. All she has is what she’s always had: herself. After failing to secure the Wallachian throne, Lada is out to punish anyone who dares to cross her blood-strewn path. Filled with a white-hot rage, she storms the countryside with her men, accompanied by her childhood friend Bogdan, terrorizing the land. But brute force isn’t getting Lada what she wants. And thinking of Mehmed brings little comfort to her thorny heart. There’s no time to wonder whether he still thinks about her, even loves her. She left him before he could leave her.
What Lada needs is her younger brother Radu’s subtlety and skill. But Mehmed has sent him to Constantinople—and it’s no diplomatic mission. Mehmed wants control of the city, and Radu has earned an unwanted place as a double-crossing spy behind enemy lines. Radu longs for his sister’s fierce confidence—but for the first time in his life, he rejects her unexpected plea for help. Torn between loyalties to faith, to the Ottomans, and to Mehmed, he knows he owes Lada nothing. If she dies, he could never forgive himself—but if he fails in Constantinople, will Mehmed ever forgive him?
As nations fall around them, the Dracul siblings must decide: what will they sacrifice to fulfill their destinies? Empires will topple, thrones will be won . . . and souls will be lost.
Coming Up For Air by Miranda Kenneally This author also wrote some of my favorite contemporaries, Catching Jordan and Stealing Parker. Both of which were in a series of contemporary companion novels. Coming Up For Air is another one of those contemporary companion novels. It's way farther down in the series, but it is in the series. I love reading these because they're cute and also we get to see previous couples in them-- they are companion novels, after all. Release Date: July 1, 2017 Synopsis: Swim. Eat. Shower. School. Snack. Swim. Swim. Swim. Dinner. Homework. Bed. Repeat.
All of Maggie’s focus and free time is spent swimming. She’s not only striving to earn scholarships—she’s training to qualify for the Olympics. It helps that her best friend, Levi, is also on the team and cheers her on. But Levi’s already earned an Olympic try out, so she feels even more pressure to succeed. And it’s not until Maggie’s away on a college visit that she realizes how much of the “typical” high school experience she’s missed by being in the pool.
Not one to shy away from a challenge, Maggie decides to squeeze the most out of her senior year. First up? Making out with a guy. And Levi could be the perfect candidate. After all, they already spend a lot of time together. But as Maggie slowly starts to uncover new feelings for Levi, how much is she willing to lose to win?
Paper Hearts by Ali Novak Recognize the name? No? Ali Novak is a Wattpad author who is now published. She has published two previous books, The Heartbreakers and My Life with the Walter Boys. Two books that I have read and really enjoyed. Paper Hearts is like a companion to The Heartbreakers, because it includes some of the same characters. Needless to say, I'm really looking forward to reading this novel.
Release Date: July 1, 2017 (Also the same date as Coming Up For Air... I'm not sure which book I'll read first)
Synopsis: "I'm sorry," he said, slowly untying the ribbon that held his mask in place. "It's just-I didn't want you to think of me any differently."
Somehow I kept my mouth from falling open. I knew his face, but my mind couldn't accept that he was the person looking down at me.
"My real name is Alec."
Felicity has her entire future planned. Ever since her older sister ran away, she's had the full weight of her mother's expectations on her shoulders. So she works hard to get straight As and save for college.
Except sometimes the best things in life are unplanned-like when Felicity meets a handsome, masked stranger while she is volunteering at a charity masquerade ball. She never thought he'd flirt with her. And she certainly never thought he'd turn out to be a member of the world-famous Heartbreakers band, Alec.
Then Felicity uncovers a shocking family secret. Suddenly, she, Alec, and her two best friends are off on a road trip to find Felicity's missing sister. And she's about to discover that unexpected turns have a peculiar way of landing her right where she needs to be...
Lucky in Love by Kasie West Another novel by Kasie that I'm sure will make me smile out of my appreciation for cuteness. I already gave my bit on West's books up top so...
Release Date: July 25, 2017
Synopsis: In this new contemporary from YA star Kasie West, a girl who wins the lottery learns that money can cause more problems than it solves, especially when love comes into the picture.
Maddie doesn't believe in luck. She's all about hard work and planning ahead. But one night, on a whim, she buys a lottery ticket. And then, to her astonishment --
She wins!
In a flash, Maddie's life is unrecognizable. No more stressing about college scholarships. Suddenly, she's talking about renting a yacht. And being in the spotlight at school is fun... until rumors start flying, and random people ask her for loans. Now, Maddie isn't sure who she can trust.
Except for Seth Nguyen, her funny, charming coworker at the local zoo. Seth doesn't seem aware of Maddie's big news. And, for some reason, she doesn't want to tell him. But what will happen if he learns her secret?
With tons of humor and heart, Kasie West delivers a million-dollar tale of winning, losing, and falling in love.
Wonder Woman by Leigh Bardugo I have always loved superhero stories. I don't know, I just find them very appealing. So yeah, I'm really looking forward to seeing these characters getting their stories YA-ified.

Synopsis: The highly anticipated coming-of-age story for the world’s greatest super hero: WONDER WOMAN by the # 1 New York Times bestselling author LEIGH BARDUGO.
She will become one of the world’s greatest heroes: WONDER WOMAN. But first she is Diana, Princess of the Amazons. And her fight is just beginning. . . .
Diana longs to prove herself to her legendary warrior sisters. But when the opportunity finally comes, she throws away her chance at glory and breaks Amazon law—risking exile—to save a mere mortal. Even worse, Alia Keralis is no ordinary girl and with this single brave act, Diana may have doomed the world.
Alia just wanted to escape her overprotective brother with a semester at sea. She doesn’t know she is being hunted. When a bomb detonates aboard her ship, Alia is rescued by a mysterious girl of extraordinary strength and forced to confront a horrible truth: Alia is a Warbringer—a direct descendant of the infamous Helen of Troy, fated to bring about an age of bloodshed and misery.
Together, Diana and Alia will face an army of enemies—mortal and divine—determined to either destroy or possess the Warbringer. If they have any hope of saving both their worlds, they will have to stand side by side against the tide of war.
Untitled Chaol Novel by Sarah J. Maas (Throne of Glass 5.1) Yeah... Instead of the 6th and final TOG novel, we're getting an entire novel on Chaol. I'm one of the jerks who has mixed feelings about this-- it's great! an extra novel in this spectacular world... but also I'm kind of disappointed to not be getting the last book (TOG 6 / 7 now) until 2018. I'm still definitely going to be reading this one, but I just really need to know what happens to all of my babies. (FENRYS MUST BE FREED (AND AELIN) AND LORCAN NEEDS TO BE FORGIVEN AND AEDION NEEDS TO LIVE) Release Date: September 5, 2017 Synopsis: Not released And finally, Immortal Reign by Morgan Rhodes. The final book in the Falling Kingdoms Series (which is one of my favorites.) I'm so excited to read this novel-- I need to see what is going to happen to my precious babies and make sure they're going to be okay. (Lucia can die.) December is too far away.
