Prompt 6 - Limb

He dropped his gaze to his right arm as his wand clattered to the floor. The limb hung there uselessly. Limp against his side. He quickly stooped to snatch up his fallen wand in his left hand and threw up a shield to protect himself from the same jinx hitting him again. 

“Is that the best you can do James?” He yelled across the abandoned building site. “It’s not even harmful! What are you going to do numb me into submission?” He cackled wickedly as the wall behind him exploded into rubble. “Missed again, lover!” He called out as he danced away from the debris. For all his talk he hadn’t sent anything stronger than a stinging hex at him. James had left him after he’d gotten the mark, not that he’d wanted it in the first place, but in order for him to continue as heir to the Black family he had no choice. 

James skirted around a pallet of bricks and Regulus took his shot. The scaffolding above James collapsed to the ground. James managed to put up a shield around himself before the poles hit, but the force still knocked him off his feet. “Until next time my love,” Regulus called before apparating away. That had been a close one, James had gotten way too close. He had no qualms about taking out any of those other idiots in the so-called Order, even his brother wasn’t entirely safe from him. If he had to he’d do what was needed to stay alive, but James, with James he wasn’t strong enough, never had been. 

He slammed the door shut on number twelve Grimmauld Place, his useless right arm swinging beside him and readied himself for the mind-numbing boredom in store for him at the next death eater meeting.

“james, please come to bed.”

james spins in the desk chair, his short brown hair tousled with a headphone dent across the middle of his head. “i want to. i really do, but i need to finish this.” he checks the clock on his laptop, yawning widely before reaching for his coffee. “it’s due tomorrow morning.”

regulus rolls himself out of bed, groaning as he walks across the room to place himself in james’ lap, wrapping his legs around the boy’s waist. “but i’m sleepy.” he mutters into his neck, struggling to keep his eyes open. “i’ll just stay here.” he whispers, closing his eyes as james strokes his hair before returning to typing.

“sweet dreams, reggie.”

James: We’re having iced tea. You want some, honey?

Regulus: What did you say?

James: We’re having iced tea. You want some honey?

Regulus: …sure

James: Sometimes he leaves me pictures of food instead of a shopping list.

Regulus: I had to ask Lucretia if she wished to be called "aunt" or "cousin." Your insults mean nothing to me

James: I'm sorry you wot

James: no (laughs)

Regulus: then why are you being so nice to me? What do you want from me?

James: you. I want the whole you, the little you, the you who knows to trust, the you who knows he's loved, the you who's safe, the you who's happy, the you exactly the way you are.

Regulus: I... I-

James: yes you deserve all this love. Just wait until I prove this to you.

Regulus: *starts crying*

And what if I wrote ATYD but for the Skittles? Huh? What if I write half a million words about Barty Crouch Jr. pinning over his bsf (and maybe Regulus' brother - hear me out!)?? Huh?? What if I write Regulus dying and Barty having to watch and it finally pushing him over the edge because Reggie was all he had left and he thought he was being careful??? What then??

Prompt 6 - Ensure

The fighting went on for what felt like hours. Order members against the Death Eaters. It was probably a lot less than he thought. James still didn’t know how long the fighting had actually gone on for. 

He’d taken a stunner to the chest and flown backwards into a wall. He didn’t remember much after that, apart from Sirius’s and Remus’s blurred backs in front of him as they protected him from further damage. 

Aurors began to apparate into the warring groups. The Death Eaters, now substantially outnumbered, began to disapparate. The abandoned factory filled with the sound of the retreating cracks and the final few curses flung over shoulders. 

“James! James! Hang on, we’ll get you out of here.” Sirius sounded panicked. “Remus, help me. We need to get him to Marlene.” 

James felt hands under his armpits, hauling him up and then the uncomfortable squeezing of apparition. 

“Marlene!” Sirius yelled into the dark house. “Marlene?! Where the fuck are you?!” The brown-haired witch stomped into the room. 

“Who the fuck do you think you are talking to Black?” She stopped when she saw James’s limp body. “Get him to the bedroom.” She ordered. James’s feet dragged along the wooden floor. He didn’t have the energy to lift them. 

They deposited him on the bed, and Marlene hurried in with her healer’s bag. She began running her wand up and down him, muttering under her breath. Several glowing diagrams floated above him. “Hmm,” She hummed as she inspected him. “He’ll be fine. You’ll have a nasty bruise and probably be quite sore for a week or so, but I have a balm that will help with that.” She vanished the diagrams and dug around in her bag. 

With another wave of her wand, she opened the buttons on his shirt, revealing the purpling skin beneath. Gently, she spread the balm across his chest. He sighed with relief as the tightness across his skin eased. He quickly fell asleep. Too tired to keep his eyes open. 

It couldn’t have been that long after he fell asleep that shouting woke him. 

“Did you really think I couldn’t find him, Sirius? I know exactly where he is every moment of the day.” He recognised that voice, but his sleep-addled brain couldn’t make the link. 

“Go away, you’re not wanted here,” Sirius growled back. 

“Oh, get out of the way, Sirius!” A scuffle occurred, and then James heard footsteps coming towards his room. The door flung open, and there stood still in his Death Eater robes was Regulus. James was beyond shocked. He hadn’t seen his ex for over three years. 

“Reg?” He croaked. Regulus walked to the side of his bed and took his hand. “Why are you here?” He didn’t pull his hand away. Even though Regulus was fighting on the wrong side, he knew he was safe. 

“I needed to ensure that you were alive.” He said flatly. James looked up at him, peering at his emotionless face and into his eyes. His eyes always gave him away. Most people couldn’t read them, but James could. Those steely grey windows into Regulus’s soul. He was scared. His fingers trembled ever so slightly around James’s hand. 

“I’m okay, love. Marlene checked me over. No broken bones, just bruising.” He watched as Regulus’s shoulders relaxed a notch. 

“I’m glad.” He barely whispered, his eyes trailing over James’s body. He lifted James’s hand and kissed his knuckles. “Stay safe, James.” He demanded before he gently placed James’s hand back under the covers and left the room. “Yes, yes, Sirius, I’m leaving. But if you think I’ll leave him alone, you’re as mad as Voldemort.” 

Sirius and Remus came rushing in once the door had slammed shut behind Regulus.

“James, are you alright?” Sirius clambered into the bed, checking on his friend. 

“Yeah, I’m fine. He was just checking I wasn’t dead. He won’t be back. Don’t worry.” James knew he was lying. Regulus had revealed something that he didn’t think the other two had picked up on. ‘As mad as Voldemort.’ James ran those words over and over in his head for hours. Hope, building in his chest, that maybe, just maybe, Regulus wasn’t as lost as they’d all thought he was.

“reggie, come watch this with me!”

james presses a few buttons on the tv remote, bringing up a film as regulus walks through from the kitchen. “i’ve never heard of this one before.” regulus tuts, throwing himself into the sofa. “what kind of movie is it?”

“it’s a horror film.” james presses the play button, setting the remote down on the coffee table, “but i bet it won’t be too scary for you since you’re, in your words, ‘not afraid of anything’” he teases. regulus scoffs, crossing his arms and leaning against the cushions as he watches the screen. after a moment, screams begin to echo throughout the room, reverberating off the walls as the woman on screen is hacked apart with a chainsaw. almost in an instant, the next victim of the serial killer on the screen is being butchered and thrown towards the screen, making regulus flinch as james remains unmoving.

“uh, james?” regulus whimpers, scooting closer towards the boy. he digs himself into james’ side, resting the side of his head on his chest. “how long’s left in the film?” he hides his face against the gryffindor’s shirt. james quickly wraps his arm around regulus, pulling him closer and checking the run-time. “only about five minutes. don’t worry, it’s nearly finished.” he smiles. “so big bad reggie is afraid of something.”

regulus scoffs again, shaking his head. “i’m just bored. don’t get cocky, potter.” his voice begins to trail off, wavering as he speaks.

“it’s not like i’m scared or anything.”

Sirius: Why? Why, Reg?

Regulus, sighs: Why am I sleeping with James?

Sirius: Is it a pity thing? Do you pity my best friend?

Regulus: …

Sirius: Is he sick? Is Prongs dying?

Regulus: …

Sirius: Are you working for the dark side?

Regulus: …

Sirius: Damn it, he's holding you against your will, isn't he?

Regulus: Sirius-

Sirius: If he is holding you against your will, blink twice

Regulus: …

Sirius, blows at Regulus’s eyes: Blink twice, Reggie

Regulus: Really, Sirius?

Sirius: Is this revenge? When I pushed you into the lake when we were kids?

Sirius: You have a thing for glasses?

Regulus: I’m leaving the room, Sirius

Sirius: Is it huge?

Regulus: Sirius! Really?

Sirius: I'm sorry. Let me rephrase that

Sirius: Is it huge?

I just saw someone post really cool fanart that they made of dorlily (which is dorcas and lily if you didn't know) and someone in the comments said "when did we start shipping dorcas and lily? I'm lost" and it made me really think about how this fandom, the marauders fandom spesifically, has this sort of hive mindset. It's like every opinion must be collective or favoured by a large majority. "when did WE start shipping" someone posted a fanart of a ship they like. it is not a WE matter. it is a them matter and has nothing to do with you, so what does that even mean. And I think this hive mentality really contributes to how toxic this fandom has become, why its so hard for people to accept headcanons without criticizing the creators for having those headcanons, why there's constant unnecessary ship wars. we all do not need to agree. we all do not need to have the same opinions in this fandom, in fact its making the situation worse. i am begging you all to start thinking about how to behave in fandom spaces.
