"Not about half an hour ago, and don't worry about me getting all red and itchy all over my body from too much drinking! I mix it up with some Sprite to lessen the alcohol intake!" You fish out a 2L bottle of Sprite, also half-empty, on the ground, to prove your point.

Kenma sighs exasperatedly and smiles back at you. Lovely and stubborn you, who isn't the type to back down from an argument and stuff.

You gently place your drink on the wooden floor and suddenly stand up and walk. "Ah, you want something to drink? I can get you some can of beer if you-!"

You feel the grip on your wrist as he grab your hand before you go inside, and look at him.

"Kenma-"

Kenma then brings your hand near his face and tenderly kisses your palm, looking you in the eye, the action making you more flushed but not because of alcohol. He smiles at you again.

i was staring at my dog earlier, aggressively barking at a plastic bag. that's all. the rest is history

• at some point taichi just mentioned something along the lines of, "hey, wouldn't it be more fun here if... WE GET A DOG!?"

• whenever an idea spreads around the dorm, whether it's a good idea or an utterly ridiculous one, it's always either taichi or kazunari.

• IT'S ALWAYS EITHER TAICHI OR KAZUNARI (2).

• sakuya is excited about it! he never knew what it feels like to live with a dog, let alone actually grow up with one. this pure bean just wants to experience it, c'mon man...

• muku also agrees!! 100% yes!!! wouldn't it be cute when you get home everyday from school with a dog greeting you? it's like that one shoujo manga...

• tsumugi likes the idea! he also grew up with a dog (gosh dachshunds are so cute... zabi ily with my whole heart) so it wouldn't be too bad to have a dog in the dorm! apparently dogs can help you out a lot when it comes to emotional problems :)

• the moment these three angels literally agreed with the idea, everyone is ABOARD. it would be like taking care of a child except it's 100x times more fun

• actually no scratch that, not everyone is aboard...

• a LOT of pleading - either the boys shoot sakyo puppy eyes whenever they see him, or some of them (by some i only mean taichi and kazu) waits outside sakyo's room and bleed his ears off with saying PLEASE repetitively the moment sakyo goes out of his room

• sakyo murdered everyone who barged into his room but they always, ALWAYS do it anyways. they don't learn their lesson!!

• SAKYO GOT FED UP. begrudgingly, after this has been going on for a month, he says yes

• EVERYONE CHEERS, FREAKING FINALLY!!!

• taichi and kazu, the mankai boys already aborted their plan of holding a funeral for the both of you... before sakyo agreed on getting a dog, he always has this look of wanting to strangle them to death

• after a lot of debating, they decided to settle on a dog that has a friendly disposition. anyways they get a light brown labrador!!!

• the day the dog got in the dorm, everyone got so excited

• everyone is literally ALL OVER THE DOG. THE DOG LIKES THE ATTENTION BUT GIVE IT A BREAK!! JUST PLEASE

• they name the dog koro! it's simple enough

• (i just searched for popular dog names in japan... don't @ me pls sobs)

• that night the dog kept wagging his tail from being so excited with everyone's presence he deadass sprained his tail

• it recovered after a week

• everyone takes turns filling koro's food bowl and water bowl. the duty of walking the dog is also distributed based on when the boys are free. they literally have a calendar dedicated for koro

• tsumugi makes a list of what the dog can and can't eat! it's most likely that everyone will feed koro, so they better not kill him off early...

• everyone follows the list except juza, it seems like he forgot the existence of the list

• one time juza was eating chocolate cupcakes, and koro was giving him puppy eyes

• how could he resist that face!! his inner resolve crumbled so fast, he was literally about to give it to koro

• tsuzuru to the rescue! the moment he saw juza and koro, he yelled "JUZA NO DON'T PLEASE STOP DOGS CAN'T EAT CHOCOLATE"

• juza just looks at tsuzuru, shocked. what do you mean dogs can't eat chocolate?? how do they even live their lives without the goodness of chocolates?? WHAT?

• he fails to understand, but he doesn't give it to koro. the dog whimpers and just goes away,, juza felt so bad and silently apologized to koro, but now he learned his lesson

• omi spoils koro!! every time he has free time, he whips something up for koro. he makes it as balanced as possible, of course.

• everyone to omi: "please don't make the dog fat."

• omi: "haha i won't"

• cue next day koro kinda looks chubbier

• OMI. PLEASE WE KNOW THE DOG IS CUTE BUT PLS CONTROL IT

• no joke, tenma was excited at first but now every time he sees the dog barking he gets scared shitless.

• JUST BECAUSE THE DOG BARKS AT YOU THAT DOESN'T MEAN THE DOG IS MAD AT YOU. IT JUST WANNA BE FRIENDS YOU FREAKING DOLT

• when he got comfortable with koro, he hid from everyone and patted the dog for the first time, and ran away immediately from embarrassment

• that night everybody was questioning why tenma gets beet red every time koro gets near him. but nobody mentioned it.

• on a whim, itaru let koro pull for a limited banner, making his paw tap the button. who knows if this dog is kinda lucky, right? there's no way of knowi-

• HE GETS ALL THE LIMITED CARDS IN ONE 10X PULL

• itaru just gapes at the dog for five minutes. "koro, you are a godsend..."

• itaru hid the dog's insane luck from banri, but somehow banri caught on

• "THAT'S UNFAIR! WHY WERE YOU HIDING IT FROM ME"

• from that point forward whenever itaru and banri play together, expect koro to be with them. it occurs a lot of times, but koro doesn't seem to mind as long as he gets belly rubs.

• congratulations masumi!! you now have a new alarm clock, but a million times MORE annoying!!

• they trained koro so every time masumi doesn't wake up, koro will just pounce and literally jump on him while barking right on his ear

• masumi hates to admit it, but the dog is goddamn annoying and it's effective at the same time

• hooray to masumi for not being late ever again!

• tasuku just stares at koro dead in the eye while the dog looks at his meal. what if i also train him to..?

• one day during winter troupe's rehearsals, hisoka was actually super duper early and that NEVER HAPPENED.

• "HISOKA WHY ARE YOU SO EARLY?? IS SOMETHING WRONG??"

I was not expecting much of this event because I've had no contact with Doraemon, but the character interactions really made it all work. I honestly only played it because I saw that Vane was in it (the year of Vane never ends apparently) but everything that happened once the crew got involved was just, so good. Also was not expecting the sauna event to be referenced yet again.

God yeah mood!

I genuinely have never watched a single Doraemon episode or even been aware of the manga in general, so i wasn't expecting much. Hell, in general i try to wake up before an event start to read it once it's live (since waiting just means running into spoilers everywhere), and i decided to sleep it off this morning because i thought, meh, don't care, nothing that'd get spoiled could be this big for me.

and then i saw my friends @ me in the spoiler chanel we have on discord telling me to read this event and i just KNEW it meant Dragon Knights. That's my luck. gdi granblue can you do one mediocre event once in a while so i can chill a little smh noooo it always has to be great and amazing stories i want to read immediately smh.

but yeah that's for sure, the year of Vane sure never ends, 'im so amazed it keeps going and going. The sauna event reference was a nice little touch

tbh i'm not especially surprised by the mentions in the event but i am surprised that it's in a collab event - since those are generally to attract the fans of those sagas and make them discover the gbf universe, so they hold back on too many self referencial gbf stuff to help on the immersion

but idk, maybe because Doraemon is an iconic child anime in Japan meaning that a lot of the core playerbase would be invested first without it being just to attract newbies may be playing on how they decided, hey, let's mostly make it a fun ride with tons of reference to ourselves in it.

Idk bout y’all but my parents love to take pictures from ALL our family trips and we have hats and stuff from all that so pops would probably sit down with noya and show them all of that and noya just loves it!! Like so much his eyes are starry eyes (perhaps what inspires him to travel the world hmmm)

If you have siblings he definitely will play with them when he comes over.

Will probably do that plane thing that adults do where they’re just making the kids fly all around (your siblings love him so much it’s crazy)

Never one for giving too many lessons but if you ask him about something in Japanese culture he’ll probably look a place he can take you to show you more

His favorite times are when you ask about anything food related because it means he can take you on dates to restaurants where he gets to see your reactions

He loves taking you to like the Shonen Jump shops or anything similar because just watching you go through all the parts of the store and seeing all these things catch your attention would make him so soft

Probably grabs your hand and gives you a quick cheek kiss when he’s watching you

Would be 1000% down to go back to your home country

Loves you, your culture, and even tries to learn some Spanish for you

(but his accents so thick you laugh every time he tries to speak, it’s okay you give him a kiss and some sweets from your country as a thank you for trying)

I don’t even know where to begin with Tanaka because I literally have like 75000 thoughts of him at a bull riding event going through my mind

BUT he’s a soft boy I know for a fact, loud on the outside but very soft.

With Tanaka I do see him wilding out at parties

Better have a separate pinata for him because he’ll go crazy swinging on that thing

He always blushes super hard when she does that and turns even more red when you tell him that she likes him and calls him “Mijo” now

She actually tells him stories about the olden days back home and Tanaka listens so intently even though he doesn’t understand but then turns to you as you translate the story

Warms up to the affectionate side of hispanic families really quick, like he kisses you on the cheek when he meets your family like second nature. He even did it to you one morning and then got all red when he remembered that they don’t really be doing that shiz in Japan

I feel like Tanaka would really really like the traditions hispanic families do or how much emphasis they put on holidays and family together

Like he’ll probably come over on the 24th for Noche Buena and just loves the atmosphere of the holiday and the connection with family (and of course the food) 

It’s a really big contrast to the quieter Christmas his family will be celebrating the next day

Will definitely bring a Japanese Christmas Cake from the fanciest store he can afford as his own gift to the potluck

I know we see Tanaka as wild as hell sometimes but I feel like in a hispanic setting he’ll just go soft, or maybe I’m just soft for him who knows

they went back to korea in 1900 shortly after the country opened back up to the outside world, just in time for japan’s occupation of korea and the korean war, of course!

he lost friends in the war; he lost a lot of people in general over his years and after the war he really distanced himself and didn’t make a single friend for 70 years until @feykyuhwan and then he was like u know what i’m tired of watching friends die so i’m turning you haha! and now he has a fledgling, very cool

i won’t get into his personality too much because that’s on his profile and i wrote like 5 paragraphs about it nobody needs that again

currently he’s a high school student and trying to get expelled because he’s been through high school Several times and is bored, plus “i’ve done everything else there is to do, i should get the full high school experience” including getting kicked out, apparently. he’s intentionally failing out of his classes and getting into fights on school grounds

BnHA Chapter 158: Deku VS Overhaul ~Conclusion~

Previously on BNHA: Eri escaped Overhaul and leaped into Deku’s waiting arms. Before Overhaul could grab them, Deku instinctively activated 100% OFA in his legs and leaped to safety on the surface. Back in the Pit of Despair, Nighteye told the others he’d seen Deku’s death in a vision, and he believes they can’t do anything to stop it. Up on the street level, Deku marveled at how all of his wounds were suddenly healed up. But then he collapsed in pain feeling like his body was being “pulled apart from the inside.” Overhaul reappeared, having merged himself with a new minion, and explained that Eri’s quirk gives her the power to “rewind” humans, reverting them back to a previous state. Depending on how she uses it, she can even rewind them back to nothingness. He made it out to be some cursed thing, but Deku was all “8D” and realized he was carrying a full-HP-restored-and-all-status-ailments-cured healer who was currently using her quirk uncontrollably, unable to turn it off. So he literally fucking strapped her to his back with Mirio’s cape, and activated 100% One for All Full Cowl.

Today on BnHA: We say goodbye to volume 17 and usher in the new era of volume 18. Overhaul monologues a bunch about quirks and mutations and disease and blah blah blah. He says brats like Deku can’t appreciate Eri’s value and the power of her quirk. Meanwhile Togawice watch from a safe distance, and Ochako floats Nighteye up to get him some medical help. Overhaul has more flashbacks about how the Comatose Boss (back before he was comatose) told him to stop selling quirk drugs and not to stray from the right path. Of course, as we all know, he didn’t listen, wanting to restore the yakuza to their former glory by starting a drug war and supplying both sides. It’s arguably implied here that Overhaul may be the one who put the Comatose Boss in his coma, but Horikoshi is very vague about it. At any rate, back in the present day Overhaul continues to rant at Deku, but Deku has fucking All Might power now, and he just. Beats the everloving shit out of him. Like, it takes about four pages. Holy shit. And just like that, this battle is finally over.

ironically, this actually seems like the most narrow-minded view of Eri’s quirk possible. most people would look at Eri’s quirk and immediately identify it as a healing quirk. the fact that he turned it into a destructive quirk tells you all you need to know about the kind of person he is right there

also, those buildings he’s casually smashing just so happen to have people in them omg

why would they not have evacuated by this point. there was a fight going on between a dragon and a giant villain for a full 20 minutes. for that matter, you’d think that local heroes would have eventually stepped in at some point. that’s plenty of time for backup to have arrived, and it should have been abundantly clear by that point that they needed it. so much about this doesn’t make any damn sense smh

(ETA: I think later on they confirm that there were only a handful of civilian injuries, though, and they were only light scratches and stuff. but all that means is that they got lucky goddammit.)

and he’s again telling him “you must not stray from my path”

why am I starting to get the feeling that the boss never actually got “sick” and that was Overhaul’s doing as well...?

I feel like this is the only person who could plausibly be shipped with him. it doesn’t hurt that at this point he’s literally the last Precept standing

so first they flood the streets with some of the “incomplete products” they have on hand that can temporarily erase quirks

and once people have gotten a taste of that they’ll all be clamoring to purchase the completed product from them at sky-high prices

anyways, because the boss isn’t A COMPLETE MONSTER, he’s immediately telling him no

you know, this is one of those instances where the time-honored mob tradition of doing away with a troublesome family member before they get even more troublesome would not have gone amiss. just sayin’. in hindsight he probably wishes he had

instead he just told him “if you’re going to disobey our way of thinking then you should just leave”

Overhaul says all he wants to do is repay the boss for taking him in

then why don’t you start by, I don’t know, FUCKING LISTENING TO HIM oh my god

but instead he went behind his back, continued torturing the innocent little girl, and proceeded with his plan

(ETA: okay, so! after much discussion, I have come to agree with the people saying that this scene...

...which I initially took to be Overhaul relenting, followed by the transition from the flashback back to the present, is in fact actually Overhaul making the decision to take his boss out of commission. the fade to black and the startled look on the boss’s face are intended to show that Something Bad is about to happen. and the next panel after that is just Overhaul thinking about how he owes a great debt to the boss, and that if they proceed with his plan, they can restore the family. “look forward to it, Pop.” so yeah, that does make sense.

what still annoys me though is that they don’t explicitly confirm it, even though it’s arguably the key moment in terms of Overhaul’s development into a villain. the series has no problem showing Eri’s torture in way more detail than anyone ever needed or asked for, and yet this key scene merely gets hinted at. it’s basically the thing all of these flashbacks are leading up to, and then they just... don’t show it.

there is one possible reason I can think of for this, which is that this scene is from Overhaul’s perspective, and because he wants to continue thinking of himself as the loyal son who’s doing this all for the sake of his father figure, it makes sense that he would censor his own recollection of the incident in order to further convince himself that it was all for the best. but while that explains the vagueness, there are still tons of other ways Horikoshi as the author could have confirmed it for us. for instance he could have showed it from Kurono’s perspective instead. or hell, just confirm it with a simple line of dialogue if you have to. but narratively, I think the decision to leave it inconclusive hurts the story by robbing us of the coolest, most dramatic and defining moment of Overhaul’s past.

so idk, I’m still not the biggest fan of this scene. for me, it comes tantalizingly close to being the kind of super dark twist I was hoping for, but then fails to stick the landing. so I’m hoping the anime can improve on this a little bit.)

so now we’re back in the present, and there are a few panels of Overhaul screaming that everyone else is missing the bigger picture, and he’s trying to destroy this world (the word “world” being in quotation marks, so I assume he means society, not the actual world), and that the “fake heroes” who are fixated on their tiny notions of justice need to stay out of his way

boy this is getting tiresome. it’s like someone combined Stain and Overhaul and created... Worse Overhaul

but he really doesn’t stand a chance against a 100% Deku, I think

Canada: Mattie’s got a big ol dog, Kumajiro! I prefer to think of Kuma as a dog and not a bear cause it’s more realistic. Kuma isn’t the most obedient...He’ll howl at nothing outside and sometimes he’ll hide Matt’s TV remotes smh

America: Al’s got two dogs! A golden lab and a pitbull! Some good girlsssss he treats them both like queens! Al fuckin loves taking his doggos out on drives. They stick their faces out the windows! They’re also there as comfort animals, kinda, cause Al stressed out a lot sometimes and just needs some fluffy cuddles

France: Francis is a hoe for animals. He’s got a dove, a big ol’ poodle and an obese cat. They’re all white cause white is the color of purity! His poodle, Adeline, loves to gather socks from the laundry so you gotta close the laundry room door so she won’t get in there. Francis keeps his bird in the kitchen by the window and sometimes he’ll whistle while he cooks so his bird will learn new songs!

Spain: Toni’s got a tank with three turtles inside! He’s also got two outdoor cats that catch mice and stuff in his garden or in his garage. He only brings them in when it’s raining or something. He used to have a parrot! It would sit on his shoulder while he worked or played his guitar. They had a really good relationshippppp

Russia: Ivan has a hugeee cat. A super fluffy cat! Ivan will brush him in the summer to help him shed that winter coat and it makes him laugh cause Ivan brushes enough hair off of his cat to make another whole cat! He takes pictures of the hugs mound of fur next to his cat and sends it to his sisters. They all love cats and find it hilarious

England: Artie has an outdoor cat that he converted to an indoor cat! He over feeds it like he does to his other cats cause he’s one of those people who says “If I feed him more, he’ll love me more!” And he’s half right I suppose. When he has to sleep alone, he sets out this red, old pillow that his cat has claimed as his own and they’lol sleep side by side

China: Yao has his cat and his koi fish! His cat pretty much stays in two spots, either on the top of its scratching pole or burrowed in the pillows on the sofa. Yao spoils the fuck out his fish. He buys super expensive food for them and will keep watch to make sure they’re not acting weird or sick, he’s super vigilant!

Germany: Oohhhh my gosh, Luddy’s got his three dogs like he does in canon. He has a huge soft spot for his dogs and usually the rules like ‘no paws on the couch’ or ‘no doggos on the bed’ will not be enforced cause he can’t say no to those big ol’ puppy eyes! He can’t! And when he goes on jogs, he’ll bring his dogs along cause he can’t bear he though of them getting overweight and bad joints! He keeps them super healthy and has a special diet for all three of them for their breed types and size!

Prussia: Gil’s got two dogs! One of them is super special cause he’s got two different colored eyes! Gil has no self control when it comes to pets. If he sees a cute toy or something he’s gotta buy it! And if it weren’t for Ludwig saying things like “Use common sense, Gilbert”, Gil would have like fifteen dogs

Japan: Kiku’s got his little tailless dog! They get along super well! Whenever Kiku takes baths, his dog will slip into the bathroom and try to drink from the tub. Kiku honestly doesn’t know how he gets in there cause??? He’s a little dog?? And the door handle is so high???

S.Italy: Lovi’s got a huge ass greyhound that he’s so fuckin proud of. He used to let her run in races cause from a young age, that dog would run laps around the house! She’s retired now but she’ll still run around if she knows Lovi’s gonna give her a bath. Lovi’s always preferred girl dogs cause every boy dog he’s ever had always had a horrid temper. Sometimes, he lets her sleep in his bed but he can’t let her get used to it!

N.Italy: Feli has a car and a fuck ton of fish. His cat usually stays in Feli’s bedroom on the windowsill to sit in the sun! Feli’s fishtank is a big one that separates his kitchen from his living room. lemme explain a bit on what that is: here in the philippines, you have to apply for a job somewhere sometime between your 3rd and 4th year of college, and the position you’re applying for has to be related to your course (duh). not all companies offer OJTs, so you might have to apply to a lot. it’s kind of like interning somewhere, but you’re still a student, and it’s only for like 2-3 months

idk if they have OJT programs in japan (where this is set), but let’s pretend they do

without further ado, here’s the on-the-job trainees (some under the cut as usual)

Yuri plisetsky (OJT for presiden’t secretary)

-          Is an incoming 4th year college student and he needs this job thing for credits. And for his resume but whatever

-          Business major at D university, which means that during the school year he has eyebags going for miles on his face

-          Then again what college student doesn’t have bags on their faces really smh

-          His grandpa told him to try applying for an OJT position at the school, and he readily agreed because wHAT? I GET TO WORK WITH GRANDPA?? COOL, MAN!!!!!!1!!!11

-          he’s an on-the-job trainee under yuuko, which means he not only does the cashing and checking, he sometimes has to talk to people when yuuko’s not around

-          normally he’d sit in his desk in the corner, calculating expenses and revenues, but once he sees someone at the window, he has to take a second to brace himself before going up and talking to them

-          it’s mostly payments for stuff, but rarely it’s something not payment related. In which case he stutters a lot and has to refer to the notes he made when yuuko was briefing him about the job

-          leo is 2 years his senior in college and studied English. Normally they wouldn’t interact, but they met when guang-hong was going to consult someone about a paper, who was also leo’s thesis advisor. He kind of became guang-hongs shock absorber when it came to talking to mutual professors

-          eats in the faculty room with the other teachers because yuuko always eats with her husband in the caf

-          or leo knocks on the window and shows him the caf’s specials he bought, so they end up eating lunch in the cashier/sec office

-          he and leo are actually dating, but they keep it so lowkey that no one knows. Or someone does know, but it’s more like “are they dating??? They’re dating, right??? They look like they’re dating”

-          it would only be speculation. They’d ask, but both guys were just so sweet that if they asked about it, they might get offended or hurt or something

-          like no, man, the students didn’t want leo and guang-hong sad or distressed out of turn

-          so as much as it pained them to not know the truth (because holy shit they look cute together and they have to be going out with each other), they don’t ask about it

-          the only solace they have are the group selfies that phichit or guang-hong take, or the stolen and candid ones that phichit manages to catch

-          those are few and far in between tho so the students are still #suffering

Christophe Giacometti (OJT for history)

-          a student in C university and studying history and geography

-          on the outside he may not look it, but he’s actually a straight A (or at least the equivalent) student and he’s very serious about his studies

-          victor’s best friend, so putting them together might not be the best ides because if victor is EXTRA™ by himself, then with chris by his side they’re DOUBLE EXTRA™

Kenjiro minami (OJT for PE)

-          Everyone calls him the McDonald’s chicken nugget

-          On his first day at work, he was dressed in a yellow shirt with white and red lining, plus black track pants with white and red lining. The fact that his hair was dyed blond with a streak of red on one side did not help matters for the nickname

-          Is taking sports theory in D university, and is JJ’s trainee

-          Is probably the most enthusiastic 5’ ball of a person jj has ever seen

-          Attends the university Yuuri did, and kenjiro fuckin idolizes him

-          Like, no joke. He’s watched yuuri’s debates and speeches that were uploaded online numerous times, to the point that he’s memorized yuuri’s entire script

-          Yuuri has anxiety so normally he’d be super petrified on stage, but during his best performances, he was way too sleep deprived on those days trying to finish his script that the memory of that whole day was fuzzy

-          Not that he wasn’t a good speaker, as kenjiro would defend to the ends of the earth, he just gets super jittery and stutters a lot

-          Despite that fact tho, kenjiro still loves Yuuri a lot, and he says so to anyone who would be willing to listen

-          Kenjiro is the best cheerleader. Like. When the students are doing drills or having practical exams, he’s be 1000% there to cheer them on

-          Only second to phichit in #TeamVictuuri fans

-          Jj once asked him why he applied for an OJT there when his major was sports theory

-          Kenjiro said he wanted to test if some of the theories are true, and that it was good to have some inspiration for his thesis by observing different students of different ages

Grammy’s

The Grammy’s like to pretend they’re about quality when they’re really a popularity contest and a political game just like any other awards show.

I know it’s frustrating to see the boys get snubbed.  I think part of the reason 1D and Zayn have never even been in the running for the Grammy’s is because your team has to submit you for consideration.  I doubt 1DHQ bothered, especially these last few years when they’ve been at full on war with the boys.  

When it comes to popularity, 1D has always been popular with their albums, but their singles haven’t broken the top 40 in the same way singles from other boybands in the past have. Occasionally 1D will get a single in the top 40, but it doesn’t necessarily stay up there for weeks in a row.  Part of the difference is just that the music industry is in a different place than it was when N*SYNC and Backstreet Boys were popular.

The other element is the idea of prestige that the Grammy’s holds dear.  There are several reasons why One Direction isn’t considered prestigious, all of which are pretty much BS.

Sexism

When it comes to the prestige part of it, you’re right that the Grammy’s and the general public look down on boybands for no solid reason.  The prevailing theory that has merit is that it’s a form of sexism.  People assume that only girls can like boybands because the reason to like them must be that the girls want to date the members of the band.  This is a load of BS since there can be any number of reasons to like a boyband, but people still believe that boybands are solely liked by young girls who want to date them.

Pretty much nothing young girls like is taken seriously.  Girls get called hysterical all the time while young boys can go crazy over video games or men can go crazy over sports and no one calls them hysterical.  Since boybands are seen as something young girls like, they’re automatically discredited by association.

It’s true that some boybands don’t have a very good quality of music, but that’s not true of all boybands by any means.  All genres of music have some popular bands that aren’t very good, so singling out the boyband genre and defining it by the bad bands isn’t fair if you’re not going to do that with other genres.

Elitism

People have a need to feel special, unique, and because of that, exclusive. Anytime something is massively popular, there’s a backlash because it’s no longer considered exclusive.  One Direction is victim to that backlash to some extent.

The other problem is that things that are light and fun are always considered superficial.  Things that are light and fun are not mutually exclusive to things that have depth and meaning, but people can’t seem to wrap their heads around that.  Bringing joy to people is a very important thing.  Hope, joy, and love can help people keep moving forward when they want to give up on their life, can inspire people to persevere against oppression, and can help people understand each other and stop the cycle of hate and violence.

Because One Direction’s genre started out as light pop and that’s when they had their massive hits that everyone has heard, people are more willing to dismiss their music.

Ageism

Ageism can go both ways.  There’s discrimination against older people and also against younger people.  Younger people are always seen as being naive and ignorant because they’ve lived fewer years.  It’s true that in many cases, older people have more experience and more wisdom, but that’s not true across the board.

One Direction are no longer teenagers, but 1DHQ never allowed their image to grow up.  Fans know that they curse, make sexual innuendos, and have political views, but non-fans don’t pay close enough attention to see those things.  All they see are the promo pictures and the merchandise that’s sold in stores and that stuff still makes it look like the boys are 16.

Manufactured Myth

Part of it is that boybands are considered manufactured.  People assume that it’s a money grab, which it is in many cases to be fair.  There’s an entire industry in South Korea and another one in Japan that’s targeted at creating new boybands to try to earn as much money as possible.  Even One Direction was created with that intention in mind, not that the boys themselves had any say over the goals of their careers.

People just don’t understand that the way you were created doesn’t define what you become.  It’s just like the difference between parents and children. Parents influence children, but children are not their parents.  You can have bigots with extremely open-minded children and you can have extremely decent parents with a child in prison for murder.

One Direction having the success that they’ve had isn’t a fluke.  It started on X-Factor when they had tons of fans lining up outside just to see them.  They already had an international following before they’d even released their first single.  The reason they’ve succeeded is because they’re talented, hardworking, have a rare chemistry between the members, and are genuinely good people.  

Believe me when I say I’ve seen quite a few boybands and One Direction is special.  Not every boyband has that chemistry and spark.  A band being formed without any input from the members themselves and yet working together so well is extremely lucky.  For the members to recognize what they have together and dedicate themselves to it is even rarer.  I only know of 2 bands like that- Arashi and One Direction.

Instruments and Writing

People also assume that if you’re manufactured, you must not write your own music or play your own instruments, and if you don’t do those things, you’re not authentic.  Both of those assumptions are wrong.  As the 1D fans know, pretty much all the boys are talented lyricists and all of them can play guitar. Niall even records for their albums and plays live on stage.  

However, even if they didn’t do this, there would be no shame in it.  Singing and performing are professions that require a lot of talent in themselves, so there’s no reason to demand that someone who sings and performs also has to be a talented instrumentalist, composer, and lyricist.  That would be like requiring someone who acts to also write scripts, produce, and direct.  Some actors eventually go down that route, but by no means are all actors expected to.

So Yeah

People who have that knee-jerk reaction of making fun of boybands have probably never thought about why they do it.  They’ve just absorbed the pervading sexism and elitism they’ve grown up with and they churn it back out thoughtlessly.

The best you can do is challenge anyone who says things like that to think about it more.  More than likely, they’ve never listened to any One Direction song that’s not a single.  In fact, they probably haven’t listened to anything from the last 2 albums at all.  They know nothing about the band and maybe if you point that out, it will plant a seed in their heads to start wondering what basis they actually have for their opinion.

Why did you choose your url: I was trying to figure out what to call my pokemon go account, and I was talking to Seb (my SO), and I asked them to look in the nearest book and look up a random page and say the first line. It was a daredevil comic and the line was “But what is true?”, said by Foggy to Matt. I liked it so much that I changed my blogname too!  It is smh extremely fitting to me and my life experience

Gender: oh dear lmao. I guess I’m one of those people who can’t reliably identify as cis nor trans because I’m already stuck feeling not-quite-human so how would I specify a “category of human”. it’s giving me unreasonable anxiety because I feel stressed about being referred to as a specific gender, but I would probably feel more stress asking for any other arrangement. I think the most correct term would be agender, but it should be noted that I don’t identify as such offline, and I don’t consider myself a part of the trans community except as an ally
