Is It Fascism? A Leading Historian Changes His Mind.
Robert Paxton thought the label was overused. But now he’s alarmed by what he sees in global politics — including Trumpism.
Tumblr media
When the foremost historian on fascism, Robert Paxton, who has been reluctant in the past to apply that label to Trump, finally admits that Trump IS a fascist it's time to pay attention.
This is a gift🎁link so you can read the entire article. Below are some excerpts.
Jan. 6 proved to be a turning point. For an American historian of 20th-century Europe, it was hard not to see in the insurrection echoes of Mussolini’s Blackshirts, who marched on Rome in 1922 and took over the capital, or of the violent riot at the French Parliament in 1934 by veterans and far-right groups who sought to disrupt the swearing in of a new left-wing government. But the analogies were less important than what Paxton regarded as a transformation of Trumpism itself. “The turn to violence was so explicit and so overt and so intentional, that you had to change what you said about it,” Paxton told me. “It just seemed to me that a new language was necessary, because a new thing was happening.” When an editor at Newsweek reached out to Paxton, he decided to publicly declare a change of mind. In a column that appeared online on Jan. 11, 2021, Paxton wrote that the invasion of the Capitol “removes my objection to the fascist label.” Trump’s “open encouragement of civic violence to overturn an election crosses a red line,” he went on. “The label now seems not just acceptable but necessary.” [...] This summer I asked Paxton if, nearly four years later, he stood by his pronouncement. Cautious but forthright, he told me that he doesn’t believe using the word is politically helpful in any way, but he confirmed the diagnosis. “It’s bubbling up from below in very worrisome ways, and that’s very much like the original fascisms,” Paxton said. “It’s the real thing. It really is.” [emphasis added]
Remember, fascism typically involves a cult of personality. Hitler was wildly popular with ordinary Germans.
It's no coincidence that Trump is so obsessed with the numbers at his rallies.

Andrew Perez and Asawin Suebsaeng at Rolling Stone:
As Donald Trump recovers from an assassination attempt and Republicans head to Milwaukee for his coronation this week, the GOP elite has rallied around a new messaging strategy: emotionally blackmailing Democratic politicians, journalists, Hollywood celebs, and numerous other Trump critics into shutting up about the former president’s openly authoritarian vows and his extreme policy agenda. Since the deadly shooting at a Pennsylvania rally Saturday, prominent conservatives have been working to blame the incident on Trump’s enemies for labeling him a “fascist” and for fanning heated “rhetoric” that, in their telling, caused the would-be assassin to shoot at the former and perhaps future American president. “When the message goes out constantly that the election of Donald Trump would be a threat to democracy and that the Republic would end, it heats up the environment,” House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) said Sunday, adding: “It’s simply not true. Everyone needs to turn the rhetoric down.”
Two of the finalists on Trump’s vice presidential shortlist quickly blamed the assassination attempt on talk about his authoritarian plans. “The central premise of the Biden campaign is that President Donald Trump is an authoritarian fascist who must be stopped at all costs,” Sen. J.D. Vance (R-Ohio) wrote Saturday night. “That rhetoric led directly to President Trump’s attempted assassination.” Sen. Tim Scott (R-S.C.) said the attack on Trump was “aided and abetted by the radical Left and corporate media incessantly calling Trump a threat to democracy, fascists, or worse.”
Top Trump ally Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) said Sunday he had been “worried about this for a very, very long time,” adding: “You know, if he wins, democracy is not going to end. He’s not a fascist. He represents a point of view that millions share. The rhetoric is way too hot.” These messages are all part of a deliberate strategy. Within the first three hours following the failed assassination of the presumptive 2024 GOP presidential nominee, three sources close to Trump were already feverishly detailing to Rolling Stone how Republicans could use the shooting to their political advantage — whether for potentially mammoth fundraising, propaganda about Trump being “tough” and a “fighter,” or attacks on Democrats as belonging to the actually violent party every time they bring up things like the deadly Jan. 6 Capitol riot that Trump instigated.
[...]
The attempt on Trump’s life does nothing to change the reality that he is — in fact — running on an openly authoritarian platform. Trump and his closest allies are pledging to punish President Joe Biden and other top Democrats and jail his political opponents; unleash the National Guard and active-duty troops on Democratic-controlled cities whenever he wishes; end the Justice Department’s independence so he can use it to crush his foes, shut down his criminal cases, and erase any hope of accountability for his alleged crimes; retaliate against media outlets that cover him negatively; deport pro-Palestine protesters; oversee an unprecedented crackdown on immigrants, potentially erecting a vast network of camps on U.S. soil; further institutionalize his anti-democratic lies and conspiracy theories that led directly to the Jan. 6 attack; and even invade and bomb Mexico if he feels like it. Trump has quite literally pledged to be a dictator on “day one.” He later reiterated that he intends “to be a dictator for one day” — arguing such power would be necessary to erect a border wall and “drill, drill, drill.” On the campaign trail, the former president has evoked the rhetoric of Adolf Hitler, accusing immigrants of “poisoning the blood of our country.”
Trump allies are seeking to make Democrats and the non-right-wing media say “Uncle” to force them to stop talking about Trump’s record of dictatorial conduct, fascism, and divisiveness in the wake of the assassination attempt Saturday against him.
I say hell no to surrendering to their dreams of silencing us and instead continue to warn about the real danger to our democratic systems Trump and his acolytes are.

Bombshell transcripts: Trump urged use of troops to protect Capitol on Jan. 6 , but was rebuffed
Key lawmaker says interviews prove Pentagon wrongly allowed optics to overwhelm security concerns in lead-up to fateful day. The Pentagon's top brass did not comply with Trump's orders because of political concerns and "optics."
Then-President Donald Trump gave clear instructions to Pentagon brass days before the Jan. 6 riots to “do whatever it takes” to keep the U.S. Capitol safe, including deploying National Guard or active-duty troops, but top officials did not comply because of political concerns, according to transcripts of bombshell interviews conducted by the Defense Department's chief watchdog that shine new light on government disfunction ahead of the historic tragedy.
Gen. Mark Milley, the former chairman of the Joints Chief of Staff, confirmed to the Pentagon inspector general three years ago that during a Jan. 3, 2021, Oval Office meeting Trump pre-approved the use of National Guard or active duty troops to keep peace in the nation’s capital on the day Congress was to certify the results of the 2020 election.
Milley's interviews were among several key to transcripts obtained by House Administration Oversight Subcommittee Chairman Barry Loudermilk, R-Ga., and shared with Just the News.
“The President just says, ‘Hey look at this. It’s going to be a large amount of protesters come in here on the 6th, and make sure that you have sufficient National Guard or Soldiers to make sure it’s a safe event,’” Milley told the inspector general in one of two interviews he did in spring 2021 during a probe of the Pentagon’s response to Jan. 6.
Milley said then-Acting Defense Secretary Christopher Miller, himself a former general, assured Trump there was an adequate safety plan for Pentagon assistance to Washington, D.C. “Miller responds by saying, ‘Hey, we’ve got a plan, and we’ve got it covered.’ And that’s about it,” Milley recalled.

(via Judges increasingly alarmed as Trump’s Jan. 6 clemency decision nears - POLITICO)
He may pardon them, but we know what they did. #treason
“In extraordinary but little-watched court proceedings since Election Day, judges appointed by presidents of both parties have emphasized the need for accountability for the people who stormed the Capitol in an attempt to derail the certification of Joe Biden’s 2020 victory. These judges have sounded dire warnings about the fate of the country if the lessons of the 2020 election go unlearned, and they are bluntly bracing for a turbulent start to the second Trump presidency”
Trump did that. He sowed insurrection and treason.
U.S. District Judge Royce Lamberth, a Ronald Reagan appointee to the bench, captured the mood among many of the federal judges in Washington when he issued a 13-page statement accompanying his sentence of a Jan. 6 misdemeanor defendant earlier this month. He decried efforts by some defendants to “minimize” the toll of the riot or recast themselves as victims of a government intent on squelching their First Amendment rights.
“On January 6, 2021, an angry mob of rioters invaded and occupied the United States Capitol, intending to interrupt the certification of the 2020 presidential election results,” Lamberth wrote. “No matter what ultimately becomes of the Capital Riots cases already concluded and still pending, the true story of what happened on January 6, 2021 will never change.”
Here are those 13 pages: https://bit.ly/3P6yP5J
Chutkan, on Monday, said she fully endorsed Lamberth’s words.
“This is the United States Capitol — the people’s house,” Chutkan said. “They trashed it. They treated it like a motel room after a concert. … Engaging in an act of destruction and violence in order to halt the peaceful transfer of power has to be met by consequences.”

recounting the jan 6th riot 11/08/24
hello beautiful friends, as someone who is fed up and insanely disappointed about the election results i want us to remember what occurred on january 6th.
when and where? on january 6th 2021:
at around 12PM Donald Trump began to speak to his supporters near the White House.
at 1PM the outer police barrier was broken into.
"We're going to the Capitol," he says. "We're going to try and give them [Republicans] the kind of pride and boldness that they need to take back our country."
3. around 2PM protestors have now broken windows and entered the capital.
4. between 3PM-4PM the protestors are banging on doors, destroying property, and have broken into the chamber.
5. Donald Trump finally addresses his 'fans' in a tweet.

aftermath?
https://www.justice.gov/usao-dc/36-months-jan-6-attack-capitol-0
here are statistics regarding the criminal charges and aftermath of the riot and with Trump back in office he stated (not accurate if he will or won't) that he would pardon those who took part in this act.
on a more psychological account the riot not only created a rift between the republican party itself but as a viewer it not only shocked me but it affects many, many more. here is one of many articles addressing the psychological affect of the riot:

overall, i am very upset about the results of this election but i think we will be okay, we just need to find our communities and help each other. understand that there is always someone else out there that understands your anxiety, understands your fears, and can validate your emotions.
let me know if there is anything you would like me to talk about more in depth, i am still learning as well so please feel free to comment or shoot me a message regarding anything.
always here! <3

Like Trump, Brazil’s Bolsonaro Still Has a Path Back to Power
Tumblr media
Last week, Brazil’s federal police unsealed a nearly 900-page document outlining the evidence they collected during an investigation into the actions of then-President Jair Bolsonaro and 36 other people, including several high-ranking military officials, in the aftermath of the country’s presidential election in October 2022. According to the report’s main conclusion, Bolsonaro “planned, acted and was directly and effectively aware of the actions of the criminal organization aiming to launch a coup d’etat and eliminate the democratic rule of law” after he lost that ballot.
President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, who defeated Bolsonaro by about 2 million votes in the second round of the election, was inaugurated on New Year’s Day of 2023. Seven days later, Bolsonaro’s supporters stormed Brazil’s Congress and damaged buildings throughout the capital of Brasilia. That riot—reminiscent of the storming of the U.S. Capitol by supporters of then-President Donald Trump on Jan. 6, 2021—was put down swiftly, and it further reinforced the resolve of Lula and a coalition of leftist and centrist legislators to reject the anti-democratic aspects of Bolsonaro’s movement.
In the nearly two years since Jan. 8, 2023, however, it has become clear that the riot that day was only the visible tip of the iceberg of plots threatening Brazil’s democracy at the time. Bolsonaro, his family and his campaign team worked throughout the election to undermine the credibility of the electoral institutions. After losing, the outgoing president presented an unsigned decree to three top military commanders that would have created a commission to investigate purported electoral fraud based on false evidence that his own party propagated online, with an eye to suspending the country’s electoral authorities and forcing new elections. Going even further, Bolsonaro’s former defense minister and vice presidential running mate, Walter Braga Netto, approved an assassination attempt against Lula, Vice President-elect Geraldo Alckmin and Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes. Clearly if Bolsonaro and his supporters didn’t manage to keep Lula from rightfully assuming the presidency, it wasn’t for lack of trying.
Bolsonaro, who had already been banned from office for a range of lesser but nonetheless serious offenses, will now be under further scrutiny for these newly revealed coup plots. But he can’t be counted out yet. Though other rising right-wing leaders might aspire to lead the movement he has fostered, Bolsonaro remains a political force capable of pulling strings across the country. As a former president, he has a media presence that is hard for his opponents to rival. And despite the electoral ban he is under, Bolsonaro told the Wall Street Journal last week that he plans to run for president again in 2026.

Jimmy Pesto is going to prison!
Jay Johnston, the voice of Jimmy pesto on Bob’s Burgers was already let go from the show due to his involvement in the January 6 insurrection in the capital. Well, his trial just ended, and he was sentenced to one year in prison. I hope he finds a way to deradicalize himself, and that his second act as an adult ends up being better for himself and society, but I’m glad they were consequences for what he did.
