LETTERS FROM AN AMERICAN
March 19, 2021
Heather Cox Richardson
When I see Representative Matt Gaetz (R-FL), and other voices from our right wing, siding with Russian President Vladimir Putin in his demand that President Joe Biden debate him or pretending that the January 6 attack on the Capitol wasn’t a big deal, or Republicans voting to overturn a legitimate election or trying to keep Americans from voting, sometimes I despair of our democracy.
But a poll released by the Pew Research Center yesterday shows that these Republicans are out of step with the country. It reveals that the vast majority of Americans cares deeply about the preservation of our government. Asked about what happened at the Capitol on January 6, 87% percent of Americans say it is either “very important” (69%) or “somewhat important” (18%) for law enforcement officials to find and prosecute the insurrectionists.
Where those numbers fall apart is among Republicans who believe that former president Trump won the 2020 election. While 87% of Democrats think what Trump did was wrong and that he should have been convicted of inciting the insurrection, 66% of people who believe that Trump won the election say that the riot at the Capitol is getting too much attention. Eighty-two percent of them said Trump’s conduct leading up to the insurrection was not wrong and that the House should not have voted to impeach him.
The danger of the Big Lie—the false idea that Trump actually won the 2020 election-- was always that it would convince Trump supporters to fight for him not because they thought they would be fighting to overturn the U.S. government, but because they thought they would be defending it. If, indeed, the election were stolen from the former president by the radical socialists of whom he warned, it would be the part of heroism to rally to protect our system.
That is, apparently, what at least some of the insurrectionists believed they were doing. Today, a federal judge ruled that Jon Schaffer, an Indiana man arrested for his participation in the insurrection, must remain in jail because he poses a risk to the community. Schaffer had clearly embraced the Big Lie, telling journalists: “We’re not going to merge into some globalist, communist system, it will not happen. There will be a lot of bloodshed if it comes down to that, trust me…. Nobody wants this, but they’re pushing us to a point where we have no choice.”
Also today, court papers revealed that a federal grand jury has charged four leaders from the far-right gang the Proud Boys with conspiring to “commit offenses against the United States, namely… to corruptly obstruct… an official proceeding”—that is, the counting of the electoral votes—and to obstruct law enforcement officers engaged in putting down civil disorder. The four named are Ethan Nordean (AKA “Rufio Panman”), 30, of Auburn, Washington; Joseph Biggs (AKA “Sergeant Biggs”), 37, of Ormond Beach, Florida; Zachary Rehl, 35, of Philadephia, Pennsylvania; and Charles Donohoe, 33, of Kernersville, North Carolina.
At least three of the four were spurred to action by the Big Lie.
On November 5, 2020, Biggs posted on social media: “It’s time for f**king War if they steal this sh*t.”
On November 16, 2020, Nordean posted: “What’s more disturbing to me than the Dems trying to steal this election, is how many people… just accepted Biden won, despite the obvious corruption… Luke warm Patriots are dangerous.”
On November 27, 2020, Nordean posted: “We tried playing nice and by the rules, now you will deal with the monster you created. The spirit of 1776 has resurfaced and has created groups like the Proudboys and we will not be extinguished. We will grow like the flame that fuels us and spread like the love that guides us. We are unstoppable, unrelenting and now … unforgiving. Good luck to all you traitors of this country we so deeply love … you’re going to need it.”
On the same day, as news broke that the Trump administration was hoping to bring back firing squads, Rehl posted: “Hopefully the firing squads are for the traitors that are trying to steal the election from the American people.”
After the attack, during which, according to the charging document, “approximately 81 members of the Capitol Police and 58 members of the Metropolitan Police Department were assaulted,” Nordean posted a message on social media saying: “[I]f you feel bad for the police, you are part of the problem. They care more about federal property (our property) than protecting and serving the people.” Rehl posted, “I’m proud as f**k what we accomplished yesterday, but we need to start planning and we are starting planning, for a Biden presidency.”
Meanwhile, the lawyer for Schaffer, the Indiana man, is trying to get leniency for his client by arguing that the man was encouraged by Trump. “People have the right to believe the highest elected official…. My client is not responsible for what happened on January 6.”

#1yrago Redaction ineptitude reveals names of Proud Boys' self-styled new leaders
The Proud Boys suck at redaction: as the white nationalist extremist organization struggles with a succession crisis following founder Gavin McInnes's departure (precipitated by a Freedom of Information Act request that revealed that the FBI called them "white nationalist extremists) have published a new set of bylaws for the organization with the names of the new leaders blacked out.
But the redactions were accomplished by drawing black rectangles over the text, which can still be copied and pasted to read it. This is a stupid mistake that most people stopped making a decade ago (with notable exceptions).
So we can read the blacked out names the document claims are the Proud Boys' new leaders. They are: Harry Fox, Heath Hair, Enrique Tarrio, Patrick William Roberts, Joshua Hall, Timothy Kelly, Luke Rofhling and Rufio Panman.

New Post has been published on http://totalconservative.com/fbi-reports-show-capitol-attack-was-pre-planned-trump-didnt-incite-it/
FBI Reports Show Capitol Attack was Pre-Planned. Trump Didn’t Incite It.
If you needed any further evidence that Donald Trump’s impeachment trial is a complete farce, you need do nothing other than glance at the charges the FBI is bringing against many of the perpetrators guilty of storming the U.S. Capitol. The more affidavits that come in, the more it becomes clear that this was a pre-planned attack, and that’s what the federal government intends to prove when they bring these folks to trial. The problem? If this attack was weeks in the making, how can it be true that Trump caused it to happen with his speech on January 6th?
According to the FBI affidavits filed against hundreds of accused Capitol perpetrators, the defendants had been planning the attack on social media in the weeks leading up to the 6th.
In remarks to Just The News, former independent counsel Kenneth Starr challenged the Republicans who voted for impeachment to look at this collection of evidence and reconcile the two mutually-exclusive stories.
“I would hope that those 10 Republicans and hopefully even some Democrats would say as we now look at the timelines that the media, The New York Times, The Washington Post, and all are reporting on, here’s exactly it, the facts,” said Starr. “They’ve made a huge, colossal blunder. So walk back, and apologize to the former president, apologize to the American people that I never should have voted in favor of this without the benefit of all the facts. I rushed to judgment.”
Indeed, the FBI is not only aggressively pursuing leads that indicate that the storming was pre-planned but that some of those in attendance were not even motivated by the election – or at least not primarily so.
The Washington Post reports:
Social media posts by a Washington state member of the Proud Boys arrested Wednesday indicate that he and others were planning in advance to organize a group that would attempt to overwhelm police barricades and breach the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, U.S. prosecutors alleged. Ethan Nordean, 30, and others appeared motivated in part by what they perceived to be an insufficient police response to the stabbing of one of their members who attended a December pro-Trump demonstration in D.C., the FBI said in charging papers.
Nordean, also known as Rufio Panman, was charged with attempting to obstruct Congress’s certification of President-elect Joe Biden’s electoral college victory, punishable by up to 20 years in prison, as well as additional counts, the Justice Department said.
In a 12-page affidavit, an FBI agent alleged a string of confrontational communications aimed in part at police and “this corrupt system” by Nordean and the Proud Boys, a far-right group with a history of violence.
If you were to put Trump into a criminal trial and present all of this mitigating evidence, the jury would have no choice but to acquit – EVEN IF Trump actually told his followers to storm the Capitol, which he of course did not. As for the Senate, acquittal is a foregone conclusion, but Democrats ought to be embarrassed at even putting the country through this joyless charade.

WATCH: Antifa tries to stop the free speech of Proud Boys at prayer rally
August 3, 2018, was quite the day in the People’s Republic of Portland, Oregon. In case you missed it, hordes of violent, hate-filled “anti-fascist” domestic terrorists swarmed the streets to persecute the Proud Boys, Patriot Prayer Group, and others who were publicly gathered in support of the United States and President Donald Trump. Video footage captured by Infowars and published to Brighteon.com depicts the extreme violence that was perpetrated by Antifa against American patriots that day – footage that the mainstream media tried to censor by keeping it out of the news and off of YouTube. “The narrative that’s being spun already is that the Proud Boys, or the Patriot Prayer Group, or all of this stuff – these are the racist, Nazi bigots that are invading Portland to plunder and pillage your town,” stated Infowars‘ Owen Shroyer in a video blog leading up to the event. “And if you go on Twitter, this is all you see.”
Portland is a “breeding” ground for Antifa, says Proud Boys leader
As explained by Rufio Panman, the Sergeant at Arms for the Seattle chapter of Proud Boys, Antifa can’t be all about fighting fascism because it is fascism. Everything that Antifa does and represents is fascism embodied, including the silencing of free speech that its members perpetually attempt against their enemies. “Antifa, their surface-level attack is: you’re racist, you’re a Nazi. But really their agenda is anarchy and communism,” says Panman. “They want to inflict anarchy into our system to uproot what we have as Americans here in Western culture, and create a communist society.” So why Portland? Somehow this beautiful city in the Pacific Northwest became a breeding ground for Antifa extremists who want nothing more than to dismantle American freedom and replace it with absolute tyranny. “Portland is … the breeding for Antifa,” warns Panman. “It isn’t really a location where they all meet up like Berkeley kind of is. This is where it seems they live. And it seems like the city council, the mayor, and maybe even the police, are all kind of linked into this way of life that accommodates these kinds of groups.”
Infowars, Proud Boys encounter similar violence by Antifa in Oakland, California
While Infowars, the Proud Boys, and the Patriot Prayer Group were all able to hold their own in Portland, their work wasn’t finished. The very next day, they traveled to Oakland, California, to engage a similar Antifa protest in the streets – only to encounter the very same rage and violence from this domestic terrorist group that they did in Portland. “The identity politics (of the Left) is now institutionalized racism,” Shroyer said about the “culture” of Antifa and how it operates during a rally. “They’re always on the wrong side of every fight.” Keep in mind that governing authorities in these two cities, as in all American cities, have the power to shut down all of this violence, rioting, and chaos if they so choose. The problem is that many of them refuse to do so, including Portland Mayor Ted Wheeler, who actually told Portland police officers to stand down and let Antifa do whatever it wished in the city’s streets. Almost two months later to the day of Infowars‘ August visit to Portland, Antifa staged another violent protest that “involved criminal acts, intimidation of motorists, and general mayhem,” as reported by PJ Media at the time. “In the videos, protestors scream obscenities, create a no-go zone for cars, and call those who violate their demands ‘white nationalists.'” Read the full article

Mary Papenfuss at HuffPost:
Donald Trump confidant Roger Stone’s links to Capitol rioters were further revealed Saturday with the release of a new video showing him on a rally stage with top members of the extremist Proud Boys. One of them has been accused by the FBI of allegedly planning the deadly storming of the Capitol.
The video was released a day after ABC posted a tape showing Stone with militia members of the extreme right-wing Oath Keepers the morning of the Capitol riot.
The new video was obtained by Just Security, an online forum hosted by the Reiss Center on Law and Security at the New York University School of Law. It shows a happy Stone pressed together on a rally stage in December with Proud Boys leader Enrique Tarrio and the group’s “sergeant at arms” Ethan Nordean — also known as Rufio Panman.
“Never give up, never quit, never surrender, and fight for America!” Stone tells a crowd gathered the night before the “Stop the Steal” rally in Washington in the video. Nordean’s hand appears to be on Stone’s shoulder as he rails against the results of the presidential election.
Tarrio was apprehended in Washington just two days before the storming of the Capitol on an arrest warrant on charges that he torched a Black Lives Matter banner at a church at an earlier protest. When he was arrested, he was found to be carrying two “high-capacity firearm magazines,” which led to illegal possession charges, according to a statement from the Metropolitan Police Department of the District of Columbia.
The FBI has accused Nordean in an affidavit of allegedly plotting with other Proud Boys to storm the Capitol in a riot that claimed five lives. He was arrested Wednesday and charged with attempting to obstruct Congress’s certification of Joe Biden’s electoral college victory, which is punishable by up to 20 years in prison, The Washington Post noted. Nordean was also charged with aiding and abetting, knowingly entering or remaining in restricted building or grounds, and violent entry and disorderly conduct on Capitol grounds.
According to video obtained by Just Security, Trump ally Roger Stone has been accused of helping to incite the Capitol insurrection with the help of domestic terrorist group Proud Boys.
