My first ever fic was Harry Potter and I posted it on FFN. Every once in a while I reread it and I'm amazed at the genuine funnyness of it as well as the cringe parts XD
And the funniest thing is that the reason I wrote it was because I was fed up with this cliche I kept reading over and over again which was practically the same fic with a few elements or just WORDS changed or switched around. Hence its title: "The Un-cliche Time Travel of 2020" XD
....yeah I still suck at naming things đ
authors!!
quick question...
also can you remember where you first uploaded your first ever fanfic??
#I discovered fanfics in mid 2020 and started writing them like 2-3 months afterwards#I've always loved writing so this was the natural path#Also went thru a writng drought 2021-22 I think#Yup two years#And then Jan of 2023 I resumed my writing with renewed vigor#The words and ideas won't stop#Thank you One Piece đ#More specifically thank you Cora & Law đ

Tomarrymort Recs by aethon đ
Hi! Thank you for your interest in this blog đ€ This is a rec blog focused exclusively on Tomarrymort recs.
If you're looking for Tomarrymort rec lists, keep reading! I will keep this master list of links updated as I post more rec lists to this blog.
*
My standard list of rec list disclaimers:
âą Please mind all tags and warnings on AO3 before reading (including CCNTW, explanation here). I strive to include a balance of themes and a diverse range of fic genres and ratings in my rec lists, so you'll come across lighter fare such as fluff and crack fics, along with fics that may cover darker themes. âą Recs are always listed in alphabetical order by title. âą Because I'm reccing Tomarrymort ship fics (all ratings from G through E) rather than gen fics, I aim to find fics where both characters in the ship are a meaningful part of the story; there isn't significant focus dedicated to side ships for Harry or Tom before getting to the endgame ship; and the Tomarrymort ship is central to the story. âą Finally, this blog is not a fic-finding blog, but please visit our friends at @findingtomarrymort if you're having trouble locating a specific fic!

HEY YOU!!
Do YOU want to rewatch all of Phil's QSMP Hardcore Deity Lore in one big binge like a total fucking masochist? LOOK NO FURTHER!
In order to drag my friends into Bird Man Brainrot Hell with me, I made a bullet list of all the major lore vods with dates and timestamps included for a streamlined list of what and where to watch!
All you have to do is use this [QPhil Lore Playlist] I made from our beloved Crow Mercy's Phil vods channel and refer to the bullet list below!
Tallulah & Chayanne would've loved this day (Sept 15th 2023, 8:00:15 to the end)
What Happened to Me? (Sept 24th 2023, 1:09:11-1:14:11)
Is this real? (September 25th, 2023, 3:08:14-3:27:10)
Finding the Line (Oct 27th 2023, 2:50:00-3:03:00)
A discovery⊠(Dec 6th 2023, 2:19:47-3:15:26)
Another discovery (Dec 15th 2023, 2:42:07-2:46:28, 2:57:18-3:00:17, 5:37:39 to the end)
Healing (Dec 18th 2023, 3:07:10-3:10:08, 6:10:59-6:29:40)
Xmas Event & A New Threat (Dec 20th 2023, 3:11:25-3:18:01, 3:36:33-3:42:46, 6:19:06-6:20:22)
A message or a warning? (Jan 12th 2024, 7:53-20:40)
The date is fast approaching (Jan 17th 2024, 2:21:26-2:24:51, 6:08:28-6:15:45)
oh boy oh gosh it's island time (Feb 21st 2024, 6:21:12-6:26:13)
A Strange Gift (Feb 23rd 2024, 2:15:11-2:20:11) (OPTIONAL: WATCH WHOLE VOD)
Greed comes with a price (Feb 26th 2024, 1:50:53-2:00:00, 2:25:38 to the end) (OPTIONAL: WATCH WHOLE VOD)
Break past the void (March 1st, 2024, 4:30-27:45) (OPTIONAL: WATCH WHOLE VOD)
ALTERNATIVELY!!
EDIT: Following Twitch's change in 2025 with VOD storage, this method may not work. Try it and see, this is just a head's up because I personally haven't tested it.
If YouTube is giving you trouble for one reason or another, YOU'RE IN LUCK!!
Kristin uploads all of Phil's vods to an archive on his Twitch, so you can actually find ALL these vods on Phil's Twitch channel too! I did this myself just a few days before posting this, they're all uploaded and relatively easy to find!
In order to do it this way, all you have to do is go to here on Phil's Twitch, then refer to the dates in the above bullet list in the vod titles. Once you find the right vod, just refer to the timestamps above and go nuts!
Happy binging and reliving Bird Man Trauma! :D
And as a bonus note:
The vods in my playlist that AREN'T major Hardcore Deity Lore moments are other significant QSMP Lore moments Phil was involved in or present for, so you could actually binge the entire playlist chronologically if you want to relive it ALL! :)

An ongoing Daniel Ricciardo video collection â€ïžđŻđŠĄâïž
adding links to vimeo and youtube finds (under the cut, so it'll update reblogs as I add more links over time!)
hello!! This is definitely not a comprehensive list, mostly filing under things that are just new to me as a more recent fan! it's cool when I stumble upon a vid I haven't seen or one I recognize from a gif set! so I'm adding them in a list of links here in case anyone else is curious â€ïž some are like 30 second commercial spots & others are longer interviews, most so far from 2014-2020 đ„đ€âš
okay allons-y!!
Sourced from Vimeo
not chronologically organized (yet!) so I've just added the upload date atm for a date approximation; have yet to look into all the uploading accounts, too, so there is definitely way more out there to see!
đUpdate 01-01-2025:
Btw if you click a link in the tumblr app and it shows a tumblr page saying "There's nothing here" sadly many of the vimeo links are not redirecting correctly atm đ
the videos are still up and available (thankfully!! and they can be found by searching the titles on vimeo [which are listed for each vid before the upload date part below]) but!! I will be making like a Google doc with all the links, since tumblr insists on adding this redirect bologna and I'm not tech savvy enough to know why its not working hehe đ I'll be back this weekend with a fix and the new link list!
lastly here's the link for DR's brand vimeo which also has the overall site search option at the top for easy access đ not linked but copy-and-pastable into Google or Safari etc: https://vimeo.com/user50821531
thanks y'all!! â€ïž
update 01-05-2025 I'm sorry y'all!! I have been fighting a fever all weekend đ so I have yet to compile everything, but the Google doc with all the working links will be here asap!! â€ïž (update 02-02-2025 omg I'm taking 5ever! Sorry y'all, I've not forgotten, life has been hella busy but I'll be adding all the vimeo links to a file soon!! Thanks for being so patient with me! hope everyone is well!! â€ïž)

definitely starting with the dozens of videos on DR's official brand Vimeo (which has the delightful Sunday Night Flights series of casual post-race recaps) link

Sophie was in a kart by the age of 10. By 14 she was a serious force, Belgian national champion and subsequently competing in the world championship for five years. But her career was cut short when she became pregnant with Max at the age of 22. Thatâs when her dreams of breaking through into car racing â she was hoping to compete in DTM (German Touring Car Championship) or GT racing â were put on hold, forever as it turned out. Van der Grint, as Bridgestoneâs chief karting tyre engineer, was responsible for choosing the squad of drivers who would test the companyâs products. He wanted only the fastest karters available. âWe only had five or six of those out of over a hundred. They were drivers who were very fast and she was one of them. I donât mean a good driver for a woman â I hate that. No, she was absolutely a top driver. She beat Jos in one of the important races. She won the Andrea Margutti Trophy in â95, beat all the big stars. Sophie is a very lovely person and is the relaxed side of Max. As an example, sheâd always bring chocolates, trying to build a team around her. She made it a personal relationship, it was nice. She knew everyone and was very social â and Max also has this.â âThe Margutti Trophy was a big deal,â states Michel Vacirca, boss of the Netherlands CRG karting team. âIt was almost like a world championship. That was a huge result for Sophie.â A fledgling Jenson Button could also see the potential in Sophie: âSophie was my teammate in karts in â95 in Paul Lemmensâ GKS team. She was a professional kart racer, there because she was one of the best in the world.â Christian Horner, who was trying to compete against her in his own fledgling career at the time, believes, âShe was definitely in the top 10 karters in the world at that time. I raced against her back in 1989. There was a European championship in Parma, Italy that then qualified you for the world championship in Zaragoza, Spain, and she was properly quick. And this was the time of Trulli, Fisichella, Jan Magnussen (who won it that year), Dario Franchitti. There was a really strong group of talent coming through and she was amongst it.'

UPS TEAMSTERS-UNION WON !!!!!!!!!!!
From the article:
[(WASHINGTON) â Today, the Teamsters reached the most historic tentative agreement for workers in the history of UPS, protecting and rewarding more than 340,000 UPS Teamsters nationwide. The overwhelmingly lucrative contract raises wages for all workers, creates more full-time jobs, and includes dozens of workplace protections and improvements. The UPS Teamsters National Negotiating Committee unanimously endorsed the five-year tentative agreement.
âRank-and-file UPS Teamsters sacrificed everything to get this country through a pandemic and enabled UPS to reap record-setting profits. Teamster labor moves America. The union went into this fight committed to winning for our members. We demanded the best contract in the history of UPS, and we got it,â said Teamsters General President Sean M. OâBrien. ... This contract sets a new standard in the labor movement and raises the bar for all workers.â
âUPS came dangerously close to putting itself on strike, but we kept firm on our demands. In my more than 40 years in Louisville representing members at Worldport â the largest UPS hub in the country â I have never seen a national contract that levels the playing field for workers so dramatically as this one....â said Teamsters General Secretary-Treasurer Fred Zuckerman. âWe stayed focused on our members and fought like hell to get everything that full-time and part-time UPS Teamsters deserve.â
âRank-and-file members served on the committee for the first time, ... âOur hard work has paid off â from those members and leaders negotiating for more at the table to my sisters and brothers building a credible strike threat around the country. Our union was organized and we were relentless. Weâve hit every goal that UPS Teamster members wanted and asked for with this agreement. Itâs a âyesâ vote for the most historic contract weâve ever had.â
Highlights of the tentative 2023-2028 UPS Teamsters National Master Agreement include:
Historic wage increases. Existing full- and part-time UPS Teamsters will get $2.75 more per hour in 2023, and $7.50 more per hour over the length of the contract.
Existing part-timers will be raised up to no less than $21 per hour immediately, and part-time seniority workers earning more under a market rate adjustment would still receive all new general wage increases.
Wage increases for full-timers will keep UPS Teamsters the highest paid delivery drivers in the nation, improving their average top rate to $49 per hour.
New part-time hires at UPS would start at $21 per hour and advance to $23 per hour.
All UPS Teamster drivers classified as 22.4s would be reclassified immediately to Regular Package Car Drivers and placed into seniority, ending the unfair two-tier wage system at UPS.
Safety and health protections, including vehicle air conditioning and cargo ventilation. UPS will equip in-cab A/C in all larger delivery vehicles, sprinter vans, and package cars purchased after Jan. 1, 2024. All cars get two fans and air induction vents in the cargo compartments.
All UPS Teamsters would receive Martin Luther King Day as a full holiday for the first time.
No more forced overtime on Teamster driversâ days off. Drivers would keep one of two workweek schedules and could not be forced into overtime on scheduled off-days.
UPS Teamster part-timers will have priority to perform all seasonal support work using their own vehicles with a locked-in eight-hour guarantee. For the first time, seasonal work will be contained to five weeks only from November-December.
On July 31, representatives ... will meet to review and recommend the tentative agreement. All UPS rank-and-file members will receive a list of improvements in the contract. ... Member voting begins August 3 and concludes August 22.
The UPS Teamsters National Master Agreement is the single largest private-sector collective bargaining agreement in North America.]
Check the article for the full list; but ho ho holy shit.
This is huge. It shows the collective bargaining WORKS. The Teamsters sent a message to UPS and this win will send a message to Corporate America that unions can WIN for rank-and-file workers!!!

Enrique Tarrio, the former leader of the far-right Proud Boys and convicted seditionist in the Jan. 6, 2021, Capitol siege, thanked Donald Trump at Mar-a-Lago for his pardon and got an âI love you guysâ from the president, according to Tarrio and a New York Times report.
The Saturday night encounter came about when a member of Trumpâs home-base country club invited Tarrio and his mother, Zuny Duarte, to dinner at the Florida resort, The New York Times reported Sunday. The member introduced the two to the president as he walked by in the main room, an unnamed White House official told the newspaper.
Duarte said Trump recognized Tarrioâs name â âOh, youâre that guyâ â and even knew the names of his co-defendants in the case, the Times wrote.
Tarrio gave a glowing account of the encounter on X, formerly Twitter, writing:
I just had a great conversation with @POTUS. He called me and my Mother over while we were at dinner and said he was sorry for what @JoeBiden did to all J6ers. He knew the hardships me and my family faced for 3 long years. He knew how many times they moved me. And he said he is working on making things right. I thanked him for giving me my life back. He replied withâŠI Love You guys. To the J6ers he wanted me to send yall a message⊠He saidâŠThank you.
The White House did not respond to the Timesâ request for comment.
In 2023, Tarrio, the former national chair of the Proud Boys, was convicted and sentenced to 22 years in prison for seditious conspiracy and other crimes related to the Jan. 6 insurrection attempt to overturn the 2020 election results. But Trumpâs Inauguration Day pardon of nearly all the people charged resulted in his release from a Louisiana prison.

Jamelle Bouie gives us another excellent column about how JD Vance and the Trump administration lies to further its often illegal and cruel approach to immigration. This is a gift đ link so there is no paywall. Below are some excerpts.
On Tuesday, Vice President JD Vance wrote a long defense of the administrationâs anti-immigrant rendition program, slamming critics who want the White House to obey a court order to facilitate the return of Kilmar Abrego Garcia. It is a notable example of the lengths the White House has gone to try to deceive the public as it deals with political fallout from its open defiance of the federal judiciary. [...] Vance begins with a lie. âConsider that Joe Biden allowed approximately 20 million illegal aliens into our country.â That is a load-bearing âapproximately,â to say the least.... But according to an analysis by FactCheck.org, from 2021 to 2024 Customs and Border Patrol officers stationed there released 2.5 million people into the United States, with notices to report to immigration authorities for further hearings and processing, out of 6.5 million âencountersâ across the U.S.-Mexico border and legal ports of entry. In addition, an estimated 1.6 million people evaded law enforcement to enter the country, for a total of 4.1 million people. [...] Vance goes on to assert that this imaginary horde of â20 million illegal aliensâ placed ïżœïżœïżœextraordinary burdens on our countryâ and âcommitted violent crimes, or facilitated fentanyl and sex trafficking.â Itâs been shown again and again that immigrants commit crimes at a lower rate than citizens do. Stating otherwise is demagogic innuendo meant to short-circuit the rational mind and inflame prejudice. [...] Not content to mislead, the vice president goes on to distort the facts again. âWhen the media and the far left obsess over an MS-13 gang member and demand that he be returned to the United States for a third deportation hearing, what theyâre really saying is they want the vast majority of illegal aliens to stay here permanently.â A reminder that there is no serious evidence that Abrego Garcia is a âMS-13 gang member.â At most, there is a flimsy, uncorroborated accusation from a police officer who was later suspended from the force. And a demand for due process â a demand that everyone has a chance to show that he is innocent until proven guilty â is not a demand to legalize the entire undocumented population of the United States. It is a simple demand to follow the law. [color emphasis added]
There Were No "Open Borders" Under Biden
I want to take the opportunity here to address the the fact that there were NO "open borders" under the Biden administration. That was misleading propaganda perpetuated by Trump Republicans to scare people into voting for them. Although Biden's handling of immigration was often problematic, he NEVER had "open borders."
In fact, according to a Jan. 22, 2025 report by Albert Sun in The New York Times, Biden "deported" (i.e., either removed, returned, or expelled) 4 million people during his 4 years in office; in contrast, Trump "deported" 1.9 million during his first term.
Even the conservative Cato Institute acknowledged in Nov. 2023 that "the Biden DHS is removing 3.5 times as many people per month as the Trump DHS did."
[See more below the cut.]
Although the right-wing, anti-immigration Center for Immigration Studies(CIS) nitpicked about whether the numbers comparing Biden to Trump in a similar Reuters report were "returns" or "removals," it doesn't really make any difference regarding the argument about whether Biden's administration allowed for "open borders." There would have been no "returns" or "removals" if Biden had allowed truly "open borders." The whole "open borders" claim was just a scare tactic used by Trump Republicans to get people to vote for them--as were their lies that immigrants increase crime rates in the US.
Remember the truck convoy that went to Texas and how some of the truckers were surprised to discover that there wasn't an "invasion" of hoards of immigrants coming over the border?
youtube
Yeah, and there were NO Haitians eating dogs and cats either. đ€Šđ»ââïž
All these lies about immigration were part of a neofascist Trump Republican scare campaign. And now Trump, JD Vance, and Trump's administration is continuing the lies in order to justify doing away with due process.

Demon-haunted computers are back, baby

Catch me in Miami! I'll be at Books and Books in Coral Gables on Jan 22 at 8PM.
As a science fiction writer, I am professionally irritated by a lot of sf movies. Not only do those writers get paid a lot more than I do, they insist on including things like "self-destruct" buttons on the bridges of their starships.
Look, I get it. When the evil empire is closing in on your flagship with its secret transdimensional technology, it's important that you keep those secrets out of the emperor's hand. An irrevocable self-destruct switch there on the bridge gets the job done! (It has to be irrevocable, otherwise the baddies'll just swarm the bridge and toggle it off).
But c'mon. If there's a facility built into your spaceship that causes it to explode no matter what the people on the bridge do, that is also a pretty big security risk! What if the bad guy figures out how to hijack the measure that â by design â the people who depend on the spaceship as a matter of life and death can't detect or override?
I mean, sure, you can try to simplify that self-destruct system to make it easier to audit and assure yourself that it doesn't have any bugs in it, but remember Schneier's Law: anyone can design a security system that works so well that they themselves can't think of a flaw in it. That doesn't mean you've made a security system that works â only that you've made a security system that works on people stupider than you.
I know it's weird to be worried about realism in movies that pretend we will ever find a practical means to visit other star systems and shuttle back and forth between them (which we are very, very unlikely to do):
https://pluralistic.net/2024/01/09/astrobezzle/#send-robots-instead
But this kind of foolishness galls me. It galls me even more when it happens in the real world of technology design, which is why I've spent the past quarter-century being very cross about Digital Rights Management in general, and trusted computing in particular.
It all starts in 2002, when a team from Microsoft visited our offices at EFF to tell us about this new thing they'd dreamed up called "trusted computing":
https://pluralistic.net/2020/12/05/trusting-trust/#thompsons-devil
The big idea was to stick a second computer inside your computer, a very secure little co-processor, that you couldn't access directly, let alone reprogram or interfere with. As far as this "trusted platform module" was concerned, you were the enemy. The "trust" in trusted computing was about other people being able to trust your computer, even if they didn't trust you.
So that little TPM would do all kinds of cute tricks. It could observe and produce a cryptographically signed manifest of the entire boot-chain of your computer, which was meant to be an unforgeable certificate attesting to which kind of computer you were running and what software you were running on it. That meant that programs on other computers could decide whether to talk to your computer based on whether they agreed with your choices about which code to run.
This process, called "remote attestation," is generally billed as a way to identify and block computers that have been compromised by malware, or to identify gamers who are running cheats and refuse to play with them. But inevitably it turns into a way to refuse service to computers that have privacy blockers turned on, or are running stream-ripping software, or whose owners are blocking ads:
https://pluralistic.net/2023/08/02/self-incrimination/#wei-bai-bai
After all, a system that treats the device's owner as an adversary is a natural ally for the owner's other, human adversaries. The rubric for treating the owner as an adversary focuses on the way that users can be fooled by bad people with bad programs. If your computer gets taken over by malicious software, that malware might intercept queries from your antivirus program and send it false data that lulls it into thinking your computer is fine, even as your private data is being plundered and your system is being used to launch malware attacks on others.
These separate, non-user-accessible, non-updateable secure systems serve a nubs of certainty, a remote fortress that observes and faithfully reports on the interior workings of your computer. This separate system can't be user-modifiable or field-updateable, because then malicious software could impersonate the user and disable the security chip.
It's true that compromised computers are a real and terrifying problem. Your computer is privy to your most intimate secrets and an attacker who can turn it against you can harm you in untold ways. But the widespread redesign of out computers to treat us as their enemies gives rise to a range of completely predictable and â I would argue â even worse harms. Building computers that treat their owners as untrusted parties is a system that works well, but fails badly.
First of all, there are the ways that trusted computing is designed to hurt you. The most reliable way to enshittify something is to supply it over a computer that runs programs you can't alter, and that rats you out to third parties if you run counter-programs that disenshittify the service you're using. That's how we get inkjet printers that refuse to use perfectly good third-party ink and cars that refuse to accept perfectly good engine repairs if they are performed by third-party mechanics:
https://pluralistic.net/2023/07/24/rent-to-pwn/#kitt-is-a-demon
It's how we get cursed devices and appliances, from the juicer that won't squeeze third-party juice to the insulin pump that won't connect to a third-party continuous glucose monitor:
https://arstechnica.com/gaming/2020/01/unauthorized-bread-a-near-future-tale-of-refugees-and-sinister-iot-appliances/
But trusted computing doesn't just create an opaque veil between your computer and the programs you use to inspect and control it. Trusted computing creates a no-go zone where programs can change their behavior based on whether they think they're being observed.
The most prominent example of this is Dieselgate, where auto manufacturers murdered hundreds of people by gimmicking their cars to emit illegal amount of NOX. Key to Dieselgate was a program that sought to determine whether it was being observed by regulators (it checked for the telltale signs of the standard test-suite) and changed its behavior to color within the lines.
Software that is seeking to harm the owner of the device that's running it must be able to detect when it is being run inside a simulation, a test-suite, a virtual machine, or any other hallucinatory virtual world. Just as Descartes couldn't know whether anything was real until he assured himself that he could trust his senses, malware is always questing to discover whether it is running in the real universe, or in a simulation created by a wicked god:
https://pluralistic.net/2022/07/28/descartes-was-an-optimist/#uh-oh
That's why mobile malware uses clever gambits like periodically checking for readings from your device's accelerometer, on the theory that a virtual mobile phone running on a security researcher's test bench won't have the fidelity to generate plausible jiggles to match the real data that comes from a phone in your pocket:
https://arstechnica.com/information-technology/2019/01/google-play-malware-used-phones-motion-sensors-to-conceal-itself/
Sometimes this backfires in absolutely delightful ways. When the Wannacry ransomware was holding the world hostage, the security researcher Marcus Hutchins noticed that its code made reference to a very weird website: iuqerfsodp9ifjaposdfjhgosurijfaewrwergwea.com. Hutchins stood up a website at that address and every Wannacry-infection in the world went instantly dormant:
https://pluralistic.net/2020/07/10/flintstone-delano-roosevelt/#the-matrix
It turns out that Wannacry's authors were using that ferkakte URL the same way that mobile malware authors were using accelerometer readings â to fulfill Descartes' imperative to distinguish the Matrix from reality. The malware authors knew that security researchers often ran malicious code inside sandboxes that answered every network query with fake data in hopes of eliciting responses that could be analyzed for weaknesses. So the Wannacry worm would periodically poll this nonexistent website and, if it got an answer, it would assume that it was being monitored by a security researcher and it would retreat to an encrypted blob, ceasing to operate lest it give intelligence to the enemy. When Hutchins put a webserver up at iuqerfsodp9ifjaposdfjhgosurijfaewrwergwea.com, every Wannacry instance in the world was instantly convinced that it was running on an enemy's simulator and withdrew into sulky hibernation.
The arms race to distinguish simulation from reality is critical and the stakes only get higher by the day. Malware abounds, even as our devices grow more intimately woven through our lives. We put our bodies into computers â cars, buildings â and computers inside our bodies. We absolutely want our computers to be able to faithfully convey what's going on inside them.
But we keep running as hard as we can in the opposite direction, leaning harder into secure computing models built on subsystems in our computers that treat us as the threat. Take UEFI, the ubiquitous security system that observes your computer's boot process, halting it if it sees something it doesn't approve of. On the one hand, this has made installing GNU/Linux and other alternative OSes vastly harder across a wide variety of devices. This means that when a vendor end-of-lifes a gadget, no one can make an alternative OS for it, so off the landfill it goes.
It doesn't help that UEFI â and other trusted computing modules â are covered by Section 1201 of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA), which makes it a felony to publish information that can bypass or weaken the system. The threat of a five-year prison sentence and a $500,000 fine means that UEFI and other trusted computing systems are understudied, leaving them festering with longstanding bugs:
https://pluralistic.net/2020/09/09/free-sample/#que-viva
Here's where it gets really bad. If an attacker can get inside UEFI, they can run malicious software that â by design â no program running on our computers can detect or block. That badware is running in "Ring -1" â a zone of privilege that overrides the operating system itself.
Here's the bad news: UEFI malware has already been detected in the wild:
https://securelist.com/cosmicstrand-uefi-firmware-rootkit/106973/
And here's the worst news: researchers have just identified another exploitable UEFI bug, dubbed Pixiefail:
https://blog.quarkslab.com/pixiefail-nine-vulnerabilities-in-tianocores-edk-ii-ipv6-network-stack.html
Writing in Ars Technica, Dan Goodin breaks down Pixiefail, describing how anyone on the same LAN as a vulnerable computer can infect its firmware:
https://arstechnica.com/security/2024/01/new-uefi-vulnerabilities-send-firmware-devs-across-an-entire-ecosystem-scrambling/
That vulnerability extends to computers in a data-center where the attacker has a cloud computing instance. PXE â the system that Pixiefail attacks â isn't widely used in home or office environments, but it's very common in data-centers.
Again, once a computer is exploited with Pixiefail, software running on that computer can't detect or delete the Pixiefail code. When the compromised computer is queried by the operating system, Pixiefail undetectably lies to the OS. "Hey, OS, does this drive have a file called 'pixiefail?'" "Nope." "Hey, OS, are you running a process called 'pixiefail?'" "Nope."
This is a self-destruct switch that's been compromised by the enemy, and which no one on the bridge can de-activate â by design. It's not the first time this has happened, and it won't be the last.
There are models for helping your computer bust out of the Matrix. Back in 2016, Edward Snowden and bunnie Huang prototyped and published source code and schematics for an "introspection engine":
https://assets.pubpub.org/aacpjrja/AgainstTheLaw-CounteringLawfulAbusesofDigitalSurveillance.pdf
This is a single-board computer that lives in an ultraslim shim that you slide between your iPhone's mainboard and its case, leaving a ribbon cable poking out of the SIM slot. This connects to a case that has its own OLED display. The board has leads that physically contact each of the network interfaces on the phone, conveying any data they transit to the screen so that you can observe the data your phone is sending without having to trust your phone.
(I liked this gadget so much that I included it as a major plot point in my 2020 novel Attack Surface, the third book in the Little Brother series):
https://craphound.com/attacksurface/
We don't have to cede control over our devices in order to secure them. Indeed, we can't ever secure them unless we can control them. Self-destruct switches don't belong on the bridge of your spaceship, and trusted computing modules don't belong in your devices.

I'm Kickstarting the audiobook for The Bezzle, the sequel to Red Team Blues, narrated by @wilwheaton! You can pre-order the audiobook and ebook, DRM free, as well as the hardcover, signed or unsigned. There's also bundles with Red Team Blues in ebook, audio or paperback.
