Yo, the High Holidays are coming up -- who is ready to rectify a great wrong and create fanworks about JEWISH CRUTCHIE?
Other confirmed or plausibly Jewish characters in Newsies: David, Les, Sarah, and their parents. Joe Pulitzer and Katherine. Mr. Wiesel. Morris and Oscar. Mush Meyers. Seitz and Hannah. Mr. Jacobi.
I am not Jewish and can't write about this knowledgeably but am super down to read it!

An analysis of Davey and Katherine's relationship (part 1/2).
I think one of the most interesting developments in the entire show is how Davey and Katherine come to like each other, so let's explore their relationship in another informal essay (part 1).
Tumblr media
When Katherine arrives at Jacobi's Deli, Davey is already in a bad mood since Jack forces him (one of the only newsies with a curfew) to go to Brooklyn:
JACK Oh. Me and Davey will take Brooklyn. DAVID Me? No. KATHERINE Why is everyone so scared of Brooklyn?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
When she first arrives, David seems to already doubt her qualifications (likely because of her gender) and seems quite amused that she's even trying. It is strange that Davey immediately looks down on her and regards Katherine as an outsider. After all, he doesn't exactly fit in with the other newsies ('auspicious' anyone?), and he isn't dressed like them either.
Plus, he didn't undermine his sister's ability in the 1992 movie or the earlier drafts of it (such as Hard Promises), so I don't see why he deems Katherine incapable on first glance.
Even though David didn't believe in Katherine as a reporter at this point, he still got worried when Jack accused her of following him. As seen in the gif above, he whispers "Oh Jack", places a hand on Jack's arm, and glances back to see her reaction. He is seemingly warning Jack to shut up and not antagonise Katherine. He may dislike her, but David has a level of social etiquette that the other newsies don't.
Where Davey is initially sexist, Katherine is initially classist. She assumes the newsies are unorganised, filthy, and dumb because of their social class. Katherine speaks patronisingly to Jack in particular (which makes sense based on their past meetings), but she also talks to the newsies as if they aren't individuals (she seems to be spitballing somewhat sensationalised headlines rather than seeking genuine answers to her questions).
KATHERINE No. The only thing I’m following is a story. A ragtag gang of ragamuffins wants to take on the king makers of New York? Well, do you think you have a chance? JACK Oh, shouldn’t you be at the ballet? KATHERINE Is the question too difficult? I’ll rephrase. Will the richest and most powerful men in New York give the time of day to a gang of kids who haven’t got a nickel to their name? CRUTCHIE Hey! You don’t gotta be insultin’. I got a nickel.
In response, Davey scoffs (as seen in the second gif). He didn't take kindly to the newsies being dubbed a 'ragtag gang of ragamuffins' and was immediately on the defensive. As soon as she thinks up the 'David and Goliath' analogy, Davey is quick to jump in. He gets out of his seat and approaches her.
KATHERINE So I’d guess you’d say you’re a couple of David’s looking to take on Goliath? DAVID We never said that. KATHERINE Well, you didn’t have to. I did.
Katherine's response, again, disregards the voice of the newsies (which should be the reason she's there: to listen to their answers). She even laughs to herself after her witty response. This causes a slight dislike for both parties. Katherine was likely bothered by Davey's defiance, and Davey was irked by her speaking for them.
Jack also doesn't trust Katherine immediately (alternatively, he may just be arguing with her for argument's sake). He points out that women do not write the serious, important stories. This may even be where David's later sexist comments stem from. As I mentioned prior, it seems out of character, but I'm also not denying that he could feel this way without Jack's input - after all, I do love a good character arc.
JACK You know, I seen a lot of papes in my day and I ain’t never noted no girl reporters writing the hard news.
Katherine fought against this, insisting they need to wake up to the new century and essentially calling them closed-minded. This shuts up Jack and the newsies (who were previously humming and murmuring their approval to his comment).
Although we do see Jojo and Race judging her reply, we can also see Albert, Specs, and Tommy Boy actually listening behind them. We do not get to see Davey's reaction here, but both do make sense for his character.
He could scoff as he did before. After all, he disliked her immediately and wanted to somewhat fit in with the newsies (so he may have mirrored the reaction of Jojo and Race). But the 'Walking Mouth' does seem to appreciate debate and reasoning, and Katherine makes a good argument. So, he could be weighing up whether he should or should not trust her at this point.
Tumblr media
She continues by calling either the strike or their petty argument 'entertaining'. I think she means the interaction she is currently having, but I reckon Davey interpreted it to mean their strike. He assumes the worst in her so therefore sees the worst in her.
KATHERINE Well, wake up to the new century. The game’s changing. Now, how about an exclusive interview? JACK Ain’t your beat entertainment? KATHERINE This is entertaining. So far.
Jack and Katherine continue to bicker. Her comeback gets many more of the newsies on her side because she'd now proved to them she was witty and intelligent. David (who likely thought of a similar counterargument himself) is unmoved by this.
JACK Hey, what’s the last news story you wrote? KATHERINE What’s the last strike you organized?
When Katherine puts Romeo in his place, the newsies seem to have more respect for her. Davey is likely the only one who doesn't feel this way because he hasn't known Romeo as long as the others, so he won't be as irritated by his painful romantic ventures.
ROMEO You’re out of your league, Kelly. Methinks the lady needs to be handled by… a real man. KATHERINE You thinks wrong, Romeo. ROMEO How’d she know my name? JACK Get outta here.
So, Davey approaches her again, rejecting her offer from earlier. Now, he could mean a "real reporter" as in someone who writes the serious, important stories, or he could mean a "real reporter" as in a man. Again, that's up to your interpretation, as either can be true.
DAVID I’d say we save any exclusive for a real reporter.
Katherine begins answering Davey, but leaves during the ellipses (below) to talk with Jack. This could be for two reasons. Firstly, Katherine knows there is little she can say at this point to get Davey on her side. Or, it could be that she sees Jack as the leader of the strike. I am more inclined to believe the second because (as we will explore as the post goes on), Katherine considers Jack the leader.
KATHERINE Well, do you see somebody else giving you the time of day? All right. So I’m just busting out of the social pages, but… But you give me the exclusive. Let me run with the story, and I promise I’ll get you the space.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Interestingly, when she first offers the exclusive, she offers it to everyone, but she only speaks to Jack the second time. Again, Katherine is disregarding the voice of the newsies as a group, and she is also disregarding the voice of the actual leader (in terms of the 'brains' behind the strike): Davey.
Now, this could be because Jack is the 'face' of the strike, so is, by extension, the face of the Manhattan newsies. However, I do think that it is strange she doesn't address the group as she did the first time. Why couldn't Crutchie, Race, Specs, Albert, Mush or Elmer give her the interview?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Even more interestingly, in 2012 bootlegs, she appears to offer the first interview directly to David. Her offering the second only to Jack would make more sense in this case, as Davey says, "I’d say we save any exclusive for a real reporter," before the second offer is made (and Katherine likely knows David is not yet on her side).
Tumblr media
Davey seems to quickly change his mind on Katherine when she tells Crutchie they'll make the front page. We can see him nod and then reach for Crutchie's arm in a way which communicates 'do you believe this?' or 'let me make sure I'm not dreaming'. The newsies are all excited by Katherine's claim, which may have also helped in winning Davey over. As we can see from his face, he is still cautious. But Katherine's news makes him optimistically cautious (in a similar way to Jack's hundred papes a week promise did in the novel).
CRUTCHIE Hey, you really think we could be in the papes? KATHERINE Well, shut down a paper like The World? You’re gonna make the front page.
This doesn't really relate to the Katherine and Davey topic, but here is the novel extract I referenced in case you haven't read it yet:
David didn't want to be partners with anybody, particularly not with this fast-talking Irish boy who seemed to live on the edge of the law. In David's neighbourhood, the Irish boys and the Jewish boys were always fighting. He especially didn't want to be dependent on his own little brother. But a thousand papers a week! If Jack was right, David and his little brother would be able to support the whole family.
Tumblr media
Jack, in a way, reaffirms that he is the only person Katherine needs to speak with as he gives her the exclusive she wants. However, he excitedly rushes over to Davey as he tells her to bring a camera and the two share a moment of eager enthusiasm, suggesting that Jack sees David as crucial to the strike in a way that Katherine does not.
JACK You want a story? Be at the circulation gate tomorrow mornin’, and you’ll get one. Oh, and bring your camera. You’re gonna wanna snap a picture of this!
I think the reason Katherine initially wants the interview with Jack is that she believes he amounts to something more. She doesn't want to interview a 'ragtag gang of ragamuffins', but she doesn't mind interviewing Jack Kelly, the kid who (she assumed) is working his way through art school.
KATHERINE So, what’s your story? Are you selling newspapers to work your way through art school? JACK Art school? Are you kiddin’ me? KATHERINE But you’re an artist. You’ve got real talent. You should be inside the newspaper illustrating, not outside hawking it. JACK Maybe that ain’t what I want.
Even when Jack points out that David is the brains behind the strike, Katherine doesn't believe him. She instead assumes Jack is trying to be modest. So, it is clear that Katherine initially undermines Davey in a similar way he initially undermines her, although her reasoning behind this is also unclear to me (unless she was blinded by her attraction to Jack).
KATHERINE So tell me what you want. JACK Can’t you see it? In my eyes? KATHERINE ….. Yeah, okay. Have you always been their leader? JACK Hey, I’m a blowhard. Davey is the brains. KATHERINE Modesty is not a quality I would’ve pinned on you.
Davey is visibly different to the newsies around him, just look at his costume, or his use of language, or how he stiffly carries himself (not being comfortable in the group yet). Katherine, as we see, is rather sheltered, so she likely didn't think much of it when Davey called, "Hey, come on, Les. The folks are waiting" - she may have assumed they all have parents in a similar way Les did ("doesn't everyone?").
In Watch What Happens, Katherine calls Jack a "modern day David" and I see this as crucial to analysing her relationship with Davey.
KATHERINE Ok. “A modern day David is poised to take on the rich and powerful Goliath with the swagger of one twice his age, armed with nothing more than a few nuggets of truth, Jack Kelly stands ready to face the behemoth Pulitzer.” Now that is how you turn a boy into a legend.
As we see in the 1992 movie, the 'David and Goliath' analogy is based on David, not on Jack. I do love how the main difference between Katherine and Denton is who they interpret the leader of the strike to be (but that's another topic for another post).
DENTON I'm Denton, New York Sun. What's your name? DAVID (suspicious) David… DENTON David. As in David and Goliath?
The reference definitely works better with David (due to them having the same name), and Katherine does know David's name as Jack tells her (and she definitely heard it before she entered Jacobi's Deli). Yet, with this in mind and the fact that Jack told her Davey is the brains, she still decides to use Jack for the analogy.
It seems she doesn't want to accept Davey's role in the strike at all, instead wanting to credit it all to Jack.
Even when we look at the Watch What Happens lyrics, she acknowledges that Jack is the face of the strike (face, not brains). But, in the next breath, she says he is the one who can save them from "sinking in the ocean". I have two potential reasons for this. Her attraction to Jack could be influencing her interpretation of the strike, or she (as a reporter) could decide that what people see is more important than the truth.
So, he's a flirt A complete ego maniac The fact is he's also the face of the strike- What a face- Face the facts, that's a face that could save us all from sinking in the ocean
Tumblr media
After the end of Seize the Day, When she celebrates with the newsies after taking their picture, she only goes to Jack. This is because she doesn't yet know any other newsie well because her interview was only with Jack. Davey celebrates with Crutchie.
It would have been nice to see Katherine and David share a happy moment together as it would show they had put their initial judgements aside. Then again, the pair likely still don't see the true importance of the other (especially on Katherine's end as she still feels it's only Jack who is the leader).
I'm not sure if David begins to like her now (as she's just taken their picture, so she's clearly serious about reporting on the strike), or when he learned she might get them to the front page (during their first meeting in the deli), or after he learns she got them to the front page (King of New York).
As Wiesel and the Delanceys show up, one of the scabs, Sniper, taps Davey's arm, implying that Davey had solidified himself as a leader within the newsies (after all, David was the one to kindly convince the three to throw down their papers, whereas Jack intimidated and shoved them). It is clear Davey is getting more and more respect in the group.
Katherine must have noticed David's co-leader role by now, though, because she specifically speaks to him in the next scene (King of New York) when Jack is away. However (I'll speak more on this when we get there), it is clear that Katherine still sees Jack as more important than Davey.
Tumblr media
The lack of connection Katherine has with the other newsies doesn't last too long. During the fight, she checks in on Specs. From the very chaotic proshot clip, it seems that she runs over to him, which is a huge growth in her character. This is likely because she saw first-hand that the boys didn't do all that much wrong to deserve this brutal treatment, which challenged her prior beliefs about the "ragtag gang of ragamuffins".
In the 2012 bootlegs, Katherine leaves as soon as the fight begins, so she does not have this interaction. I do appreciate that the proshot decided to have her check in on the newsies though, as it is a small change which makes a big difference.
Unfortunately, we don't get to see Katherine and Davey interact during these scenes, so we do not know how their relationship is at the very end of Act 1.
Tumblr media
In Act 2 their relationship changes significantly, but I wish I could've seen them interact at the end of Act 1 or before she tells them they made the front page.
When Katherine enters Jacobi's Deli, all the newsies are dejected and defeated from the fight. Katherine refers to them as 'gentlemen', showing that she has shaken off her classist prejudgements. This change in her language choices may also show a change in her and Davey's relationship, as (like we've discussed) his dislike either began from sexism or when she called the newsies 'ragamuffins'.
KATHERINE Good morning, gentlemen. Oh. Would you get a load of these glum mugs. Wait, can these really be the same boys who made front page of The New York Sun?
Either way, her new way of addressing them does show that she and the newsies now have mutual respect (which she definitely didn't have with all the scoffing from the first meeting).
Tumblr media
As she talks, she tries to cheer them up. On "glum mugs" she lightly squeezes Elmer's shoulder, which is a very comforting action and something she wouldn't have even considered when she first met them. The newsies touch anyone for any reason (to name a few: in playfulness, in anger, in excitement, to motivate, or to comfort).
Davey and Katherine go through similar journeys with physical touch. They initiate touch when they see themselves as accepted by and integrated into the group. So, by this point, Katherine sees herself as a comrade rather than someone who is 'above' or 'superior' to the newsies.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Katherine still speaks in that sensationalised tone of voice, but she is now using it to uplift rather than undermine the group: "Can these really be the same boys who made front page?". Of course, her initial interview wasn't supposed to be uplifting, but as we explored, she disregarded and spoke down to them rather than aligning herself as an equal.
However, she is now focused on the newsies. She excitedly presents the newspapers to them, and is happy to see their moods immediately lift.
Katherine getting them to the front page seems to be why Davey's opinion on her changed; he now sees her as a 'real reporter'.
DAVID You got us in the pape? KATHERINE You got yourselves in the pape.
Look at the image above with the description "An image of Kathrine being proud of the newsies while she says they are the reason they made the front page, not her. David looks as if he's regretting that he judged her." David regrets doubting her capability as a reporter and gives her credit for what she's done (showing growth from when he initially disregarded her), but Katherine credits him and the newsies instead, implying how she sees their strike as equally important to her career, and showing her personal growth (as her first interaction was insensitive and patronising).
SPECS So, what else you got? KATHERINE Mine’s the only story that ran. Pulitzer declared a blackout on strike news, so even I’m shut down now.
Specs and Davey stick around to hear if Katherine had any more news (they both seem to be the two newsies closest to Katherine). Albert half sticks around, but it seems he wants to talk to Specs rather than gather more information, and it also isn't really important to this post.
However, Specs and Davey seem to be equally interested in Katherine as they are in the strike. They are disappointed in the blackout for strike news, but they also feel saddened that Katherine is shut down.
Tumblr media
KATHERINE Hey, I heard they arrested Crutchie. Did they get Jack too?
She asks Davey this. This suggests two things. Firstly, the pair have a more sensitive and vulnerable relationship. Or (the interpretations could also be an and by the way), Katherine sees Davey as Jack's right-hand man. I'm not fully sure she sees him as a co-leader quite yet, but she definitely realises he plays a very active role in the union.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
As the newsies detail what they'd like in King of New York, Katherine shows interest and support. She is far wealthier than the newsies (as she's literally Pulitzer's daughter), but she knows how much a pair of matching laces or a sandwich ('pastrami on rye with a sour pickle') means to them. Plus, she seems to be doing some sort of variation of 'good one' each time the newsies suggest things they'd like, even when they're objectively never going to get it ('a solid gold watch with a chain to twirl it').
DAVEY (sung) A regular beat for the star reporter!
While the newsies all think of things they'd like for themselves, Davey says what he wants for Katherine, and she looks very flattered by this. It's such a sweet interaction between the two, and I think it aptly showcases how they've come to like and respect each other (which is a clear growth from their first interaction).
Feel free to look up the definition yourself, as mine is quite lousy. Beat reporting is when a journalist has their own specialised topic (or 'beat') they write about consistently and expertly. Davey is essentially saying that Katherine is a real and capable reporter who deserves a promotion.
Tumblr media
She sits with Specs, Davey, and Les during King of New York, and I'd say she has the strongest relationship with those three. Here we see her talking with Davey, and they both have a massive smile on their face.
Tumblr media
Davey is playful with Katherine during the spoon dance, tapping his spoons on her hands. He still does this in the proshot, but the camera is (rightfully so) focused on Jojo having a blast instead. We can hear Davey excitedly shout "Katherine!" just before he taps the spoons on her hands.
Katherine also says a few things during this section of the dance, but I can't fully hear it: "yes, ???" (I think it's a newsie's name as she's cheering someone on, it might even be 'Dave/Davey') and I have no idea what the second thing she says is, perhaps "yeah, fellas!"
Based on the transcript (following 'but I was a star for one whole minute'), this is all the dialogue. It doesn't assign who says what though, which is unfortunate.
[Instrumental Dance Break] NEWSIE COMPANY & KATHERINE Yeah! / Alright! / Hey come on boys! / Oh my gosh! / Come on man! / You know, I taught him to do this. / Allright Albert! / Yeah! / He’s got things in his pockets! / Spoon Fight! / Come on! / Got ‘em! [Race and Smalls do the splits] Ow. / Got ‘em! Got ‘em! / Here we go! / You guys are great! / Here’s a big one! / Woah! / Come on Katherine! Let us see ya! [Katherine dances.]
However, I'm not sure all of it is fully accurate to the livesies recording as we can hear Davey say "Katherine, that's not fair, I mean he's got things in his mouth," but it isn't included in what I've pasted above. Here's a short audio file showing this:
Tumblr media
Davey encourages Katherine the most in King of New York. He eagerly rushes over to her, trying to get her to dance and include herself in the group's fun. They are very similar characters when it comes to confidence, and he notices her reluctance but pushes her to try dancing anyway (similarly to how Jack encouraged him into the strike).
After she holds back and does a poor job, the newsies tease her:
DAVID That’s it? TOMMY BOY You gotta be kidding me. HENRY Boo. ROMEO That’s the best you got?
The newsies are very rowdy, and she responds well to them by putting more effort in and proving that she can dance.
Tumblr media
All the newsies are proud of her, but Davey seems to be the happiest. Just look at the bright smile on his face. For Katherine and Davey, partaking in this celebration is so much more than the excitement of the strike making the front page; it's also about feeling at home with the newsies. Neither of them are outsiders anymore, and they are now happy to act silly and have fun with the newsies (which neither of them would have considered doing in the first Jacobi's Deli scene).
He brings her a chair and holds her hand as she kicks on it (he also has one hand on the chair to keep it stable for her). We can hear him say, "Come on, Katherine!" and the pair are just having the time of their lives.
Tumblr media
Towards the end of King of New York, Katherine and Davey exchange a look that communicates pride, and a sense of 'can you believe it'.
At this point in the musical, they have a close relationship.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Katherine, Davey, and Les all leave together after King of New York, showing that the three have grown close. She sits on the stairs, and Les stands nearby (I can't see Davey in the clip). He's either spending time with them or he trusts Katherine enough to leave Les in her care (which he does during the search for Jack anyway).
Tumblr media
When the newsies are searching for Jack, we can see Katherine and Davey talking. They have to work together to get Jack back, and we can see them spreading what they've just discussed to the other newsies. They make a great team as both of them are united, organised, determined, and calm about the situation.
David is searching for Jack alone, and Katherine is looking after Les, which shows his progression as a character (as he no longer needs Les nearby to know he's safe) and shows how much Davey actually trusts Katherine.
My next section is unfortunately cut off because only thirty images are allowed per post (I can add three more to this post, but I feel like part 2 should begin on my next point rather than splitting it between two posts). So, I will update with part 2 shortly.

Yeah, or David marries the deli guy and they hyphenate, so he becomes David Jacobs-Jacobi.
I don't ship them but like, concept: Crutchie and Morris get married and Morris hates his family name sm that he accepts becoming Morris Morris

~𝐼 - 𝐴 𝑊𝐻𝑂𝐿𝐸 𝑁𝐸𝑊 𝐵𝐸𝐺𝐼𝑁𝐼𝑁𝐺~
“Seriously,” Davey started, putting more food into his mouth. “What does Santa Fe have that we don’t?”
Katherine laughed, awaiting Jack’s response.
Truthfully, Jack didn’t know. All he knew was that he originally wanted to leave New York. To get out of the smoke ridden city, where all he had to pass the time was manual labor. But now, Jack realized that if he went through with it, took Crutchie with him, and got away for good, he’d be leaving his family behind. He would be leaving kids he’d been protecting for oh-so-long, and he knows, it sucks being on your own.
“To be honest, now that I’s lookin’ at it, Santa Fe ain’t like it here. Sure there ain’t no horses n’ clean air in New York, but it’s home. This silly little town is where I grew up and met my family. I’s wouldn’t change not one bit.”
Jack spoke, taking a sip of water.
“Though, I would like to take some people with me to get a little slice a’ what life out there would be.”
Crutchie walked into Jacobi's Deli, sitting next to Jack, Katherine, Davey, and Les.
“Like who?”
Jack smiled at crutchie, nodding in his direction.
“Didn’t I make you’s a promise?”
Cructhie laughed, taking a glass of water from Jacobi when he came by.
“But, on that note, I’d be bringing you, Kathy, Davey, and Les. You’s deserve it after all.”
Les’ jaw dropped, then he quickly smiled.
“You’d really do that for us Jack? You’ll take us to the place you painted?”
Jack laughed, taking the boy’s hat off his head playfully.
“A’course I will. You all deserve it afta’ all. Cause, we’s all a family.”
Les took his hat back and stuck a tongue out at Jack, making him laugh.
“Cowboy Jack. Not something I ever thought I’d actually see.”
Katherine mused, causing Jack to roll his eyes, while the others laughed.
“Oh c'mon Jack, don’t forget that you told me to ‘just hop a palomino! You’s be ridin’ in style!’.”
Crutchie repeated, smirking.
“Really man?! You’s was supposed to be my best friend..”
Jack feigned a hurt expression, putting a hand over his chest as the others laughed.
Crutchie stuck his tongue out jokingly and Jack rolled his eyes at his action.
“But seriously, you’d take us with you? We- As in me, Les and Katherine- Haven’t even known you for long!”
Jack waved a dismissive hand, taking another sip of water.
“Like I said, you’s is family. Thanks to you, I was able to stand up for the otha’ boy’s.”
Davey smiled, putting a hand on Jack’s shoulder.
“And, we have extra money with my help!”
Katherine chimed in, showing her earnings that week, which had been a crisp $12.
“Kathy, I can’t take you’s dough like that. You work hard for it”
Katherine rolled her eyes, shoving the money in the shirt pocket on his chest.
“You work hard too, and it will be much quicker this way, as you only make approximately $1.92 a week, so with my aid, we should be able to afford 5 train tickets, which would cost $194.3 all together within two years! Which the exact date is… Unknown, but it would be about a year and 10 months!”
Jack groaned, leaning his head back.
“At this rate all of us would hav’ta start selling 100 papes daily!”
Katherine took out a pen and notepad, writing something down
“Actually, if you go through with that and sell out each day, then that would raise the numbers to $7.68 with all of you combined, and with my 12, it would raise that to $19.68, meaning it would only take 11 months! Cutting our estimated time almost in half!”
Katherine turns her pen and points it at the boys.
“You guys don’t have spare money you're willing to put aside for this, do you?”
Les raised his hand, practically jumping out of his seat.
“I have $5 from my birthday last year!”
Davey chimed in, clearing his throat.
“I have an extra ten lying around back at my parents house.”
Katherine nodded, writing all of this down.
“So now, taking 15 off of our total, would be $179.3, so we’d only have to work for 9 months! Boom! We just cut a year off of our original time!”
Jack smiles at Katherine, kissing her on the head.
“Thanks for all the help Kathy”
Katherine smiles, finishing her glass of water.
“Let's all get to bed. That way, we can be up and first in line for papes tomorrow!”
Crutchie chimes in, gathering all of the empty cups and putting them at the edge of the table.
The group all said goodnight, retreating to their respective places, Jack and Crutchie up in the ‘penthouse’, Davey and Les, back with their parents, and Katherine in her father’s home.
“Hey Crutchie?”
Crutchie looked at Jack, who was leaning on the metal railing of the rooftop.
“You think we can actually do this?”
Crutchie laughs and smiles.
“Of course we can! We're all working crazy hard for this!”
Jack smiles, sitting down against the railing.
“Thanks man. Let’s get some rest now, yeah?”
Crutchie nods, laying down.
“Night Jack”
“Night Crutchie"

I forever wish the Jacobi’s deli scene was longer only because I need Katherine and Davey to bicker. I want their different point of views to shine out like “this woman reviews ballets!” And “this scoundrel sells papes all day!” I wish the musical demonstrated the class difference better to show what kind of people they were and how they changed and became equals. Those two would kill for each other but show me the little talks they had to lead up to that!

Hi!!! Really stoked to see what you have for Henry Butler! Ik the basics like foodie but my personal head cannon is that his parents were hard of hearing and used ASL with him so much sometimes he just forgets to talk and just signs :))
Henry “Major” Butler!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Here’s Henry! Looking through all my research, I was super happy to have some goodies for you! Below the cut is all my references and some fun facts!
Henry’s facial features are mostly based off Demarius Copes and Michael Rios! I mostly keep the description of @newsiepedia in mind when making newsies so it still has an overall feel of each character! I kept his dark hair and more sharp chin.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I didn’t draw his cap! (Mostly to show off his hair.) It’s always crooked or lopsided and in act 2 you can see his head bandages poking out from under it.
Butler is a german last name and one of my friends who has his last name agreed that he should be German!
This friend is also Jewish, so I might make Henry Jewish as well.
Speaking of name, Henry Butler was a real newsie! His nickname was “Major Butts” and “Puts,” he was the leader of the Upper Manhattan union when Kid Blink stepped down. He was arrested on the charges of blackmailing as he told The World he wouldn’t break strike for anything less than 600$ which would be 22,000$ today.
Since the gilded age of New York is when mass immigration was more prevalent, I decided to make Henry a German immigrant.
I love Henry’s deli as part of his backstory and I really didn’t want him to lose it, so I gave Henry an elder brother to take over the deli when their father died. I also gave him ties to Jacobi’s as Jacobi is a jewish last name and I feel Henry would look up to Jacobi since he missed his father.
The lines “I thought I’d surprise me motha” “If you can find her!” I thought was interesting, it doesn’t necessarily mean he was abandoned by her. If anything, I thought it’d be MORE interesting if he knew exactly where she was, back in Germany with his sister. So Henry and his brother are working to get enough money to bring their mother and sister over to them!
As for your headcanon, I think it’s really cool! I’ve always loved Sign Language, one of my ocs does Filipino Sign to communicate! I’ll definitely see if I can sneak something into the rewrite for you!

My unsolicited thoughts on the production of Newsies that I just saw
I overall enjoyed the show, but it was a mixed bag in some regards so. yeah!
Act 1
Crutchie and Jack were not nearly close enough (physically or emotionally) in the opening scene. Also, Crutchie's crutch was on the wrong side even though the actor playing him apparently has mobility issues?
Some newsies were dropped/sent off by their parents during Carrying the Banner! Amazing! Very neat to see this explicitly acknowledged! 100/10!
Jack was shorter than Katherine <3
Race was implied to be younger than Albert based on their pants styles???
Also, Albert paid for his papes, which was disappointing
This production's Les played the "I'm ten...almost" line very differently from Livesies Les (more a reluctant acknowledgement than aggressive), which I liked (I really liked this production's Les)
The way Pulitzer said "I don't look pretty" absolutely killed me. Also, he was incredibly fidgety during the office scene and Nunzio was visibly irritated by this. The Pulitzer and co scenes were generally really well blocked and acted.
Jack walked into the scene where Snyder shows up with a flower girl that he's implied to be flirting with, which I thought was an interesting addition. She spent most of the scene waiting and looking like she really wanted Jack to pay more attention to her (he was focused on Davey and Les) but did at least stick around long enough to distract Snyder.
"But I can see her - [embarrassed pause] - her legs."
The guy Medda addressed in That's Rich ("hey, baby, I was just talking about you") collapsed in his chair after the acknowledgement even though it's not a particularly positive interaction
During the pre-WWK scene, the ensemble was weirdly quiet the whole time.
Albert had to be held back after the "aw, just let 'em try!" bit
Now that I've seen the UKsies staging/delivery of "I say we save any interviews for a real reporter" I cannot go back to watching Davey deliver the line as directly as he did in this production.
Les tried to volunteer to visit Brooklyn but Davey pulled his hand down, which was hilarious
During the WWK reprise, they did a sort of chair assembly line to get the chairs offstage, which I thought was a good way to incorporate the set change into the choreography.
I wish Jack would've given Katherine more personal space in the post-Jacobi's scene, but it was at least better than Livesies
Also, this Jack overall did not have good pacing in his line delivery
Katherine absolutely crushed WWH and I loved the way she did the "it's a girl" section
I wish Crutchie had been better incorporated into the dances. Maybe it was something to do with the actor's disability, but there has to be a better solution than Crutchie sitting to the side/being offstage half the time during WWK and Seize the Day
After the line about skull-busting Albert stood up to fight the Delanceys and Mush had to pull him back down.
Davey didn't address people individually during the Seize the Day intro :(
Another UKsies related thought is that their choice to have the scabs explicitly be from the main group was a good one and I wish this production had done it too
Jack was really in the thick of it during the fight
As Jack was climbing to the rooftop before Santa Fe, he was audibly sobbing and he kept crying during Santa Fe, which almost made me cry.
A general thought is that the existence of Livesies seems to make directors afraid to do their own thing with the show.
Act 2
Jacobi was running the deli with his...wife? and she was helping patch up some of the newsies pre-KoNY
In this scene, but also in general, Race did not commit to the bit nearly hard enough - "wouldya lookit, that's me! I'm famous!" didn't really feel like a distraction tactic
The ensemble was divided into tap dancers and spoon players (they even had a "spoon captain" listed in the program) and the spoon players at one point played their spoons on the tap dancers' shoes
The Katherine interlude in KoNY was very oddly done and I am not sure what they were trying to accomplish (and she didn't even have tap shoes, which, what?)
The person I knew who was in the show had a dance highlight in the pre-Letter from the Refuge dance break! Yay!
Les was SO funny during the WWHR lead-up and as soon as the date exchange started Jack backed away slowly since he was standing between Davey and Les before.
The Bottom Line (reprise) lead-up was REALLY well-staged
When Katherine was revealed to be Pulitzer's daughter, Katherine was visibly upset at being used as a pawn and Hannah ended up trying to comfort her, with mixed success.
When Pulitzer mentioned Davey, Jack had already been knocked to the floor but he tried to get up and lunge at Pulitzer.
Katherine ran offstage when Pulitzer said "too bad you've no family, but you can't have mine"
The person with the Bronx sign kept the sign turned around until his line
Les was fully not at the rally, which, what?
Jack also didn't get into any physical altercations at the rally, which, again, what? Weird choices were made there!
Much like the pre-WWK scene, the ensemble was weirdly quiet.
This is probably an unoriginal thought about STBI, but I think a potential way to make the "or is it because I'm a girl?" line less weird is to have Katherine deliver it in a more resigned/frustrated than accusatory tone ("I'm dealing with this again? Really?") - her concern of being dismissed is not invalid, but I think it's less to do with Jack specifically and more to do with the world she lives in.
The way Jack said "if you weren't an heiress" killed me
There were fog machines during OAFA and the scene leading up to it, and that plus the lighting during the scene looked SO COOL
Davey and Jack had their arms around each other during the beginning of OAFA and Katherine just kinda stood next to them (close by, but still) which was. a choice.
During the lines "ready to fight us a war" and "talk about seizing the day" there were choreography callbacks to "either they gives us our rights or we gives them a war" and a section of the Seize the Day choreography.
Katherine kissed Jack on the cheek before she left, which was very cute
Davey and Jack stood face-to-face very close together with their hands on each other's shoulders at the end of OAFA and it was, again, certainly a (very gay) choice
Pulitzer terrified Bunsen out of the room during the phone call bit, which led into Bunsen presumably encountering Jack and co. and then escorting them in
Jack turned to Katherine instead of Davey after the Roosevelt handshake, which I disliked not for Javid reasons but just because Davey has context for the interaction and Katherine doesn't.
During the line "New York's got us, and we're family" Pulitzer stuck his head over Katherine's shoulder. Katherine was not particularly happy with this development, but I thought it was funny.
Katherine and Les hugged in the final scene!!!
Snyder being sent to jail in Broadway!Newsies always makes me miss 92sies!Crutchy's "make friends with the rats" line
Jack and Crutchie didn't hug until the very end (right after Jack and Davey hugged), which I thought was a weird choice to make. No one hugged Crutchie when he first entered either, which was sad and honestly made Crutchie feel less like part of the group :( (which is a staging choice I disagree with)
There was no curtain call, just slower-paced bows that extended from the curtain call music through the bow music. Also, someone juggled during the bows?? I need to figure out if I've met that person given how small the juggling community is in my neck of the woods.
...This kind of just turned into a stream of consciousness infodump. Bone apple teeth!

Standing Still - Reuploaded to Tumblr: Chapters 1-4
Chapters 5-8
Chapter One - Archie
It feels like only moments ago when Archie and Ashton Larkson’s parents passed. The two children never received the details on how it happened. The police never care enough about anything when it comes to poor people. And just like that the 15 and 13 year old boys were kicked to the streets. All they can do to get by now is beg and steal.
4 years later, it’s late, Archie knows that as he’s dragged by his brother through the streets. All he can register is that his brother has stolen a loaf of bread and now they’re being chased by around eight scary-looking men.
“Get back here, you rat-bastards!” One of them shouts. Archie’s feet drag against the cobblestone and ache terribly. Shops and people fly by in a blur. He thinks he can feel tears sting at his eyes, but he fights them back. Don’t be a sissy. Ashton’s voice echoes in his mind.
They turn a few corners. He can hear his brother swear under his breath. The grip on his wrist disappears before… he hits the ground. Hard. There’s a sharp, ringing pain in his head. He blinks up at the scary men. They grab his arms, though a few others continue to chase Ashton. Before Archie can do anything, his vision fades to black.
When Archie wakes, he’s in some sort of cell. Alone. Everything aches. He can feel dried, crusty blood on the back of his neck, on his shoulders and clothes and… where is he? He shivers. It’s cold. His stomach grumbles madly. How long has it been since he’s eaten? How long was he knocked out for? His head hurts. Everything does.
He looks around once more. There doesn’t seem to be a way out. There’s no toilet. He thinks he can see something move in the shadows. Archie inches towards whatever it is. It is, in fact, a rat. He lets out a yelp and it immediately scurries back off into the shadows.
All Archie can do is tuck himself into the corner of this cold, dark room, curl up on his side like a dog and close his eyes. He fights back tears. What did I do wrong? Why did all of this have to happen? First ma and pa are gone and now… Archie doesn’t fall asleep for a long, long time. When he does, it’s a light, dreamless sleep, often interrupted by the scurrying of rats or the footsteps of more scary men like the ones that took him here. But he sleeps. Barely.
Chapter Two - Raymond
Raymond is sitting in the break room of his job, eating his dinner. He works as a cleaner at a tailor’s shop down the street from Jacobi’s Deli, where he bought a ham sandwich with the 3 cents he made on his job that day. Almost 9:00. He thinks, glancing at the clock on the wall every couple of seconds. 12, 11, 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2… He springs up from his seat, locks up the doors of the shop, and makes his way down the road, dodging carriages and newsboys walking back to their lodging houses. He accidentally nicks a kid’s hat off when shooting his wrapper into the garbage can.
“Ay’ whaddya think you’re doin’?” The kid seems much too old to be a newsie, probably in his 20s at that point. “Look, I’m sorry, you don’t gotta make a big deal about it.” Raymond says. The new face is slightly shorter than him, red hair, he looks tougher than Raymond though. “It is MY first day on my job wit’ The Bronx newsies, and I don’t need you ruinin’ it, dipwad!” The guy takes a swing, Raymond dodges and trips him, making him fall flat on his back. He starts running. Wasn’t planning on dyin’ today.
Raymond looks back to see that he isn’t being chased, but he doesn’t look where he’s going, and bumps into an old woman, knocking her over. Luckily, he catches her and puts her back on her feet. “Oh my goodness! I am so sorry! Are you alright ma’am?” “Yes, I’m fine, thank you for asking. I know it was an accident, it’s ok, things happen.” The two chat for a bit, then go their separate ways. That could’ve been way worse.
Suddenly, a man dressed in clothes not seeming to fit the streets of Manhattan. “Excuse me child, do you not see what you just did?” The mysterious man asked. “Yes? I was runnin’ too fast and I accidentally bumped into a lady. Luckily I picked her up before she could hit the ground! She’s alright, I made sure-” “That isn’t what I saw.” The man tells Raymond. “Whaddya mean?” Raymond asks. “What I think just happened was an attempted murder. Don’t you know how old that woman is? If she hit the ground, she would have perished the second she came face-to-face with that concrete. Luckily, you noticed that people were around, and played it off as some kind of accident.” “What? You’re bein’ ridiculous! Why would I try to kill some poor old lady?” Raymond is flabbergasted, confused about what is entering his ears. “I don’t know, why would you? OFFICERS! TAKE HIM AWAY!”
“What? What are you doin’!? I- Get offa me! Stop! I didn’t do nothin’!”
“Exactly kid. You didn’t do nothing, a double negative.”
“What did I do to you to deserve this? Why are you being so mean?!”
“Because I can. Wow! Two new inmates in one hour! We’re going to have a drink tonight boys!”
Great. Now I’m gonna rot in a cell because some ass thinks that capturing kids to put in your jail is just a fun game. He sits in a holding cell, feeling hopeless, until he looks to his side, and spots something in the corner. Another boy, about his age, maybe a year younger, curled up. He’s asleep. His curly, copper hair is tainted with a bit of blood, and there’s a small sort of gash in his head that’s barely visible through the thick curls.
Chapter Three - Archie
When Archie wakes again, a pair of dark eyes are peering back at him. He uncurls himself and presses against the cold wall of the strange, small room. The dull ache in his head is still there. His eyes take a moment to focus on the other boy.
“Wha… who?” Archie’s speech is barely comprehensible as he slowly regains his senses. The other boy greets him.
“Hello? Are you ok?” The brown-haired boy’s concerned voice rings through the small room. It takes a few moments for Archie to even register what he said.
“I’m.. fine. Who- Who are you?” Archie tilts his head slightly and squints. It occurs to him that maybe he should introduce himself.
Be polite, like Ma always said. “I’m Archie.” He offers a small, weak smile in an attempt to come off as friendly despite his situation.
The other boy blinks. “My name’s Raymond. You in here for somethin’ stupid too?”
Archie winces. Something stupid? Sort of. He’d have to explain everything to this stranger, and from experience Archie knows it’s hard for him to stop talking once he starts. It’d be embarrassing to just spill his guts right here.
Don’t overthink. “Yeah, I guess so… do ya know where ‘here’ is?” Archie’s voice waivers a bit more than he’d prefer. He doesn’t want to seem weak. Raymond glances around.
“Seems like a prison? Dunno. I didn’t do anythin’ besides bump inta an old lady.” Raymond’s eyes land on the blood.
“Are you ok? You’re definitely hurt… C’mere.” Archie hesitates before inching closer. Raymond pulls him the rest of the way and uses a hand to tilt Archie’s head downwards and to the side. It’s an awkward but not uncomfortable angle.
Raymond lets out a concerned “hm,” Archie can feel gentle fingers against his hair, seemingly clearing the way so his wound is more visible. Raymond’s fingers graze the raw, injured skin, which prompts Archie to suck in a sharp breath. He hasn’t been treated so gently since… well, since before his parents died. He’d received no such treatment from his brother.
Archie finds himself so lost in his thoughts that when Raymond pulls away, he takes a moment to open his eyes. He hadn’t even realized they were closed in the first place.
“How bad does it hurt?” Raymond asks. It takes a short moment for Archie to reply.
“Not… horribly? I’m bad with words. It’s like background noise but pain. Background pain.” Raymond laughs wryly, though he still looks concerned.
“What if you have a concussion or somethin’?” Ashton would have replied with a snarky, sarcastic reply. Archie doesn’t want to be like his brother, he’s realized that now.
“I’m not sure… I’ll be fine, though. Uhm.. are you hurt at all?” Archie tilts his head. His eyes gleam with concern.
Raymond shakes his head. “I’m ok.” Archie is thankful Raymond hasn’t asked anything more about how he got here. As much as Archie would like the relief of crying into someone’s arms, he doesn’t want to scare this boy off. An awkward yet peaceful silence envelops the two. Archie ponders what Raymond could be thinking, and who Raymond is outside of this cold, dark cell.
Chapter Four - Raymond
After a while, Archie starts explaining his story while Raymond creates a makeshift bandage by ripping off a piece of Archie’s shirt. Raymond has tried, and failed, to convince Archie to let him use his own shirt.
“Thanks.” He says quietly. Raymond paces his way around, kicking a pebble around the cell, until he gets bored and slumps down against the wall next to Pup.
The two are sitting next to each other against the wall of the cell. A black, furry rat darts towards them but skitters the other way when it gets too close. Archie yelps loudly. Raymond snickers faintly, it’s a bit funny how timid Archie is, even if Raymond is concerned for the other boy. Raymond looks over to his left.
“They’re just rats...” He says gently. There is a hint of amusement in his voice. Archie glances away and folds his arms.
“But theys gonna bite me and I’ll get a disease!” He retorts. Raymond thinks he can see a hint of a smile on his face, though.
“Just don’t bother them. They’re probably more afraid of you than you are of them.” Raymond places a hand on Archie’s shoulder. Archie smiles and looks back at Raymond, but his eyes still flicker back to the shadows every once and a while.
After a few minutes, footsteps can be heard down what could be a hallway. The door opens. “Hey kids, you fellas gotta get in the room, boss says so.” A guard that seemed way too tired to work tells the two. He leads the two to a large room with about twenty sets of bunk beds. “There, that’s where you’re gonna sleep.” The man points at a bottom bunk.
“…Which one?” Pup asks.
The guard chuckles. “Are ya serious? Just be glad you aren’t in a three-kid bed!” The officer walks away, still chuckling to himself.
“LIGHTS OUT!” The warden yells an hour later.
Alrighty… Raymond thinks to himself. The two find themselves over to their bed after a while, they get affiliated with a couple other kids in the block: James, a young teen who didn't have a pinky finger, and Clippers, who said he does haircuts for kids who can’t afford them. Raymond feels a little uncomfortable in the rock-solid mattress, but after a while, he eventually falls asleep.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Original characters and story were created in collaboration with @no-i-wanna-go-down (Owner of Archie and Ashton) Any other characters (Excluding Raymond) are the product of dual creativity between the two authors, which entails equal ownership of the characters.
This doesn't need to be the end of your reading! There are much more chapters than these, but they are being reuploaded for the sake of promotion. If you would like to read on, please keep reading on AO3. There is a LOT more where that came from! (Spoiler alert: It's really gay)

Them Brooklyn Boys Is Big pt.2
part one please read part one first, nothing here will make much sense. also I intend to make this a longer series, like at least 5 parts, but if I don't then I don't please don't track me down :)))
TW: violence and language, if graphic violence triggers you, plz don't read on. PUHLEASE. I'm begging you. It gets dark.
What would Make Jack and Race give up their heirarchy in Manhattan? or rather... Who?
Davey had finally started getting used to being a newsie. It definitely wasn't as nice as school, but he finally had friends. He finally had people who he could be himself around. They were family to him. Especially Jack, Davey's loving boyfriend. For once in Davey's life, he wasn't stressed over due dates for papers in school, he could relax, let loose, and hang out with his friends.
In Manhattan, all the newsies gathered at Jacobi's deli after selling. They got spread out all across the borough, so going to the deli gave them time to catch up with one another.
Davey was on his way to Jacobi's late one day after selling. Jack had nagged him to buy more papers to sell, and it definitely wasn't easy, But he had an extra few cents in his pocket, so he wasn't complaining.
He was strolling down the street, only a few blocks away from Jacobi's, when he was roughly grabbed by the arm. He abruptly tripped over his feet, and suddenly was hit with a blinding pain in his head, and he was out.
cold.
----------
"Where am I?" Davey said, as he awoke from his 'slumber.' He looked around the dimly lit room, and what he saw next caused him to feel the bile in his throat. His mouth went dry, the pain from his head fading.
"Spot, Spot, are you ok? can you hear me?" He asked the bloodied boy next to him. Spot had a black eye, bruises on his jaw, cuts all over his face, and blood seeping from a gash on his collarbone.
Spot nodded, not being able to speak due to the duct tape around his mouth. His face was bruised, blood crusted from the cuts. It pained Davey so much to see him like this.
"I'm gonna get us out of here," Davey said, before trying to undo the tight ropes that tied his arms behind his back. Spot shook his head, trying to motion for Davey to stop. "Hold on, my ropes are almost undone," Davey whispered as he struggled to undo the ropes. When he was younger, his father taught him how to maneuver out of ropes in situations like these. He just had to hope whoever tied them wasn't smart enough to tie it good enough.
He struggled more, until, "I'm free!" He whispered to Spot. "Let me take you tape off," Davey added, before carefully removing the tape tightly bound to Spot's bruised skin, trying to avoid as much pain for him as possible.
"They kidnapped us," Spot said between labored breaths, "because they were old leaders of the Manhattan newsies. They're gonna use us as leverage over Jack and Race to hand over Manhattan," Spot said, wincing from the growing pain of his bruises and cuts.
"You thought you could try to escape, Jacobs?" They heard a deep, growling voice enter the room.
we're screwed, Davey thought to himself.
I'll tag pt. 3 down below when I post it, and when the entire series is done I will do a seperate post with the links to every part for you all.
pt.3 T.B.B.I.B
Sorry bout the violence, but for some reason all my good ideas include it <333

i have a fic request for u if ur still taking them. how about a javey sickfic where jack gets the flu and davey brings him soup or something?
This is the series I posted about earlier; I'm gonna post the Sprace sickfic next!
Binge watch and cuddles
Relationships: Javey, and a little bit of Sprace sprinkled in.
Tw: language and being sick I guess? Idrk
Jack had been getting sicker by the minute. He lied in bed, surrounded by tissues, Watching stupid romcoms. He picked up his phone and dialed his person.
"Daveyyyyy?" Jack whined, sounding very congested.
"Yes my love? Davey responded, the sound of keyboards typing in the background.
"I'm sick," Jack responded, and Davey didn't have to see him to know he was pouting.
"I'll be there in ten," Davey hung up, and Jack drifted off to a sick slumber. Davey left work as quickly as possible, his coworker Katherine taking over the rest of his work.
He drove quickly, pulling up to Jacobi's deli. He ordered chicken noodle soup for Jack, and a salad for himself. Davey got to the house, seeing their neighbors pull up on a motorcycle as well.
"Hey Spot! Hey Race!" Davey called out, as Race got off Spot's motorcycle, Spot following.
"Hey Davey! My boy!" Race called out as he ran over, then doing the masculine half hug thing.
"How are you guys?" Davey asked
"Pretty good, just went for a drive," Spot replied, taking his motorcycle helmet off.
"Yea I'm picking up soup for Jack, he's sick," Davey responded, holding the soup
------------
Davey got into bed next to Jack, kissing the top of his head gently. Jack awoke to the smell of chicken noodle soup wafting through the room, sitting on his bedside table.
"Get some rest my love," Davey whispered from beside him.
"Mkay, but after soup," Jack countered, picking up the bowl of soup.
"Alright love," Davey said, kissing Jack's forehead. Davey grabbed the remote and put on Jack's favorite disney movie, "Mulan" as they cuddled for the rest of the night.
The next morning, the doorbell rang, and Davey answered.
He found a pan of brownies with a sticky note that said, 'Spot made these, but he will never admit it.' Obviously from Race.
