The one thing Percy Jackson has that neither Aquaman or Namor usually seems to have is Hydrokinesis. Percy can control the water, make it explode in giant bursts of energy. He can bend it to his will. I don't think I've ever seen Namor or Aquaman do that. So while Aquaman has the ability to talk to fish, and Namor gets flight and super-strength, Percy actually has hydrokinesis. He might actually be able to battle them with their own life source.

I think I've heard Mera and Aqualad are hydrokinetic too, though (and i think aquababy might also have been?). And somehow that makes Aqualad sound so much more appealing than Aquaman. Also, I prefer Aqualad's colour scheme. I think Aqualad is just more interesting than Aquaman in general, which is kind of funny.

Broadway is coming to Santa Monica. Jenna Ushkowitz (“Glee”) and Merle Dandridge (“The Last of Us,” “Station 19”) are teaming up and gathering their singer friends to raise money for Harvest Home L.A., a non-profit for unhoused pregnant women.

“Jenna, Merle, and Friends: A Night of Song” will feature pop and Broadway tunes performed by Jesse Tyler Ferguson (“Modern Family”), Cheyenne Jackson (“American Horror Story”), Katie Lowes (“Scandal”), Kevin McHale (“Glee”), Austin McKenzie (“Spring Awakening”), Adam Shapiro (“Never Have I Ever”), Tracie Thoms (“9-1-1”), Carly Thomas Smith (“Rent”) and Kim Dawson (“Sing Off”).

The evening takes place on April 21 at The Eli & Edythe Broad Stage in Santa Monica.

“As a new mother, I felt compelled to support and serve other mothers in need within my local community,” Ushkowitz said in statement Thursday. “Some wonderful friends, who are also moms, introduced me to Harvest Home. The organization’s mission and dedicated work resonated deeply with me. And I feel privileged to contribute a small part in the work they do.”

Dandridge added, “The women at Harvest Home are a constant inspiration. The courage, the spirit, and the joy that erupts while embarking on motherhood during the toughest of circumstances…well, it puts the enormous heart-capacity and ferocious fire of being a woman on full display.”

Musical direction will be by Seth Rudetsky (Disaster! The Musical) and James Wesley (Stars in the House), with staging by Lee Martino (Les Girls). “Jenna, Merle and Friends” is being hosted in partnership with Rudetsky and Wesley’s Your Kids, Our Kids organization.

Since launching in 1985, Harvest Home has provided housing and support to more than 650 families, transforming the lives of unhoused pregnant women and their children through programs designed to empower and equip residents during the critical periods of pregnancy, delivery, and postpartum bonding.

“We are so grateful to Jenna and Merle for coming together with their friends to amplify the experience of unhoused pregnant mothers who are working to end generational homelessness for their families,” Harvest Home executive director Sarah Wilson said. “This event will not just raise awareness and funds, but honors capable and resilient women who are too often marginalized.”

Lord of the Rings

Okay listen, when Fellowship came out, I MIGHT have read Hobbit at some point, and I'd seen the Ralph Bakshi Hobbit, but I'd never read LOTR and I knew N.O.T.H.I.N.G. about it. I went in completely blind. And I was TRANSFIXED. To this day, that opening gives me chills and takes me right back to how I felt in the theater ("The world has changed..."). I saw all three films in the theater 3-4 times each, which was and is still my record. I have minor quibbles, but overall I think they're gorgeous and I'm so glad they exist!

I've since read the trilogy and while they're still not my literary cup of tea, I appreciate them more and am now enjoying the return to Middle Earth in The Rings of Power. I didn't bother with the Hobbit movies because Peter Jackson is the type of director who needs limits in order to produce good films (sorry but his King Kong SUCKED), and I was still mourning what we could have had if Guillermo del Toro had stayed on.

Anyway, love them and I'm definitely due for a rewatch soon!

Every once in a while I remember Thomasin McKenzie appears in the credits of The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies as "Astrid". But you never actually see her. Not even in the extended cut.

I'm pretty sure this is her. So strange how things work out.

Octavian reminds me of Namor. Haughty and Callous at first glance, but with an underlying nobility. Namor is seen as an extremist by the people of earth, but he fights for atlantis, the proud and noble prince of the deep! Namor is often an enemy to us surface dwellers, but that's because his princely/kingly pride and honour demands vengeance! The people of atlantis have been pushed around too long! Namor will stand up for his people, no matter the risk! He's a heroic figure, whose haughty attitude hides a heart as noble as they come.

Similarly, Octavian is seen by many as evil or crazy. He talks to the gods by cutting up stuffed animals with his ceremonial knife, divining the entrails for answers. We're supposed to see him as cruel and unkind, but that's not what I see. I see someone doing what they feel is best for their people. They're only cruel and unkind to us because we're seeing the outsiders perspective. But Octavian is like Namor. He does extreme things for his people, out of a sense of noble devotion. He's really not evil to me. He's just a misunderstood man with a strong sense of devotion.

Let me be clear, even if I think I may be repeating myself at this point…

If clairexcarmy is endgame, the show will become trash in my memory forever.

Not even for my disappointment in the waste of sydcarmy and the atrocious use of Sydney Adamu on all the Clairexcarmy narrative.

I would consider the show trash because the clairexcarmy ship is the most sickening romance I have resisted in a while. I do say that with my whole chest.

I recently finished the book “whole again” by Jackson McKenzie, that explains (among other amazing psychological subjects) the relationship between codependent people and their “rescuers”. I may do a post detailing this but I think some people already caught this vibe. This shit is toxic, I may make Carmy stay in his unhealthy mental state forever.

I cannot believe, in one neuron of my brain, how someone can write one of the most realistic and humanizing portrayals of mental illness, treat the subject of addiction and toxic patterns with respect and realism of how to treat them, and then go “yeah it all will be fixed by being loved by someone that really doesn’t know you (only the past version of you) and has no interest in helping you grow” while also that love character being the most empty of your whole cast. I am not inventing any of that is literally what they showed us.

If it happens, I will just assume this people got possessed or were unaware of the toxic narratives they carried themselves.

Out of all the discourse, one thing puzzles me the most: people dissuading others from, borderline shaming them for, enjoying Tommy as a character or his relationship with Buck because of his perceived lack of screen time.

When has the duration of a character's appearance become the sole indicator of their quality? Anyone remember Figwit from LOTR?

He was on screen for 3 whole seconds, among other extras no less. Some viewers noticed him, they liked his vibe, they enjoyed looking at this gorgeous dark-haired elf even more than Legolas, so they made a fansite for him. Fans started inventing backstory, writing fanfics, making fanarts about him, and his popularity ballooned from there. So much so that Peter Jackson brought him back for the 3rd film, with a line this time. That was pre-HBO Flight of the Conchords fame Brett McKenzie we're talking about, he was basically just a random kiwi at the time. That is how fandom has always worked, in 2001 or in 2024.

Tommy shows up for waaaay more than 3 seconds, although a lot of stuff was only implied, possibly due to the time restriction, he is an important part of S7. This is also exactly what makes him refreshing: the unknown. It's not only fun to speculate in fanon, it's also interesting to explore in canon.

What happened between him and his father? What was it like working under G*rrard while closeted, having to lie about yourself all the time? What happened post-G*rrard during the 118 orphan era when they could only rely on one another, how did he end up as such good friends with Chimney and at least friendly with Hen? What prompted him to join Air Ops, essentially paying out of his pocket to put his career on hold for 2 years, shortly after Bobby's arrival as captain, did he have something to do with it? How will the 118 interact with Tommy now he's back into their lives?

It also opens up a whole new set of dynamics for Buck. His job was a source of conflict for his previous relationships, now he's dating a fellow firefighter, how will it pan out? It's also the first time he's dating someone who has prior relationships with the 118, someone he makes the conscious decision to actively (and quite aggressively) pursue.

I for one thoroughly enjoyed Tommy's presence in S7, his lack of screen time comparing to the mains only left me wanting for more.
